## Analysis

In episode 10 of the Slam Tilt Podcast, hosts Ron Hallett and Bruce Nightingale interview Tim Sexton (T-Sex), currently ranked 86th in IFPA rankings, discussing his path into competitive pinball starting in 2013 through league play in Pennsylvania and New England. The episode features an extended critique of Stern's Ghostbusters game by Tim, analyzing its difficulty and design flaws across three skill levels, followed by traditional 'games you like/hate' segments where the hosts discuss titles including Ghostbusters, Lost World: Jurassic Park, Radical, and classics like Attack from Mars. The episode concludes with discussion of the Batman 66 SuperLE application process and some light-hearted speculation about Stern's collector requirements.

### Signals

- **[gameplay_signal]** Tim Sexton identifies Ghostbusters as having punishing difficulty where missing the opening skill shot creates cascading dangerous situations with limited player control, describing three distinct scoring tiers that reflect difficulty spikes (confidence: high) — Extended 20+ minute segment analyzing Ghostbusters design, particularly the 'Jail' situation post-skill-shot and Slimer mechanics on Premium edition
- **[code_update]** Walking Dead received significant code updates that shifted dominant strategies from safe-shot looping (left ramp/Bicycle Girl) to more balanced play, demonstrating designer responsiveness to community feedback (confidence: high) — Tim contrasts original problematic code with current improved state, noting the game 'went from a really awful game when it first came out to a really great game now'
- **[design_philosophy]** Tim articulates design principle that successful pinball requires combination of safe and dangerous shots with software that forces players to engage both types in balanced mix, distinguishing A-tier classic games from B/C/D-tier titles (confidence: high) — Tim's detailed explanation of what makes games fun, citing examples from Williams classics and contemporary Stern designs
- **[product_strategy]** Stern is producing Batman 66 SuperLE in run of only 30 units with application-based selection process, creating FOMO and collector exclusivity (confidence: high) — Bruce Nightingale reporting '30 of them' and reading the official application form on air
- **[sentiment_shift]** Ghostbusters appears to be undergoing community sentiment pressure regarding difficulty and design choices, with Tim's critique representing broader player concerns about out-of-box playability (confidence: medium) — Tim's extensive published Pinside post criticism and Facebook 'rants' about the game mentioned multiple times, suggesting sustained critical attention
- **[collector_signal]** Classic games like Attack from Mars show extreme secondary market rarity; Ron explicitly states he believes he will 'probably never be able to acquire one at this point' (confidence: medium) — Ron's statement about Attack from Mars availability and the broader theme of classic game scarcity in collector discussions
- **[competitive_signal]** Tim credits online tutorial content (Bowen's videos on Stars strategy) with elevating competitive play understanding and player meta, showing how content creators influence competitive development (confidence: high) — Tim's account of learning from Bowen's tutorial videos and Alex Levy's strategic approach to Stars, and noting 'star stock has been climbing rapidly' after tutorial release
- **[industry_signal]** Discussion reveals Data East / Stern historical connections: Joe Kamikow ran Larry Day-era Data East operations (not Gary Stern), and later transitioned to Zynga, showing industry career paths (confidence: medium) — Ron Hallett's historical context about Joe Kamikow's role and his need to correct earlier listener confusion about Gary Stern's involvement
- **[design_innovation]** Bruce identifies unused toy hole in Avengers (mirroring Monster Bash's Dracula spot) that forces Black Widow and Captain America shots to be smaller than necessary, potentially harming game flow (confidence: medium) — Bruce's analysis that 'if you look at Monster Bash, Dracula sits on that right side there in a little hole' and the same hole exists in Avengers but without toy, forcing cramped shot placement
- **[community_signal]** Tim Sexton's Facebook 'rants' and detailed game analysis generate enough community attention to be referenced on podcast, suggesting growing influence of player-critics in industry discourse (confidence: medium) — Bruce asking 'Tim, what is wrong with Ghostbusters? Why should Ron be reconsidering the game that he won?' and referencing 'your rant on Facebook'

## Transcript

You might have noticed in tonight's episode there was some brief nudity. Now as an actor I only do nudity when I feel the script warrants it. And I thought tonight's episode only warranted seeing the side of my rump. You can believe me when I tell you the Fox executives were pushing for a whole lot more. If any of you were offended by my body, I'm truly sorry. Coming to you from beautiful upstate New York, this is the Slam Tilt Podcast, a show about all things pinball. I'm Ron Hallett here with my co-host, Bruce Nightingale. Hello. Welcome to episode 10, Wrath of the Silver Ball. Yes, yes. And this is a hallmark episode. It is. We have our first guest. Woo-hoo. This gentleman is actually ranked 86 right now in the IFPA ranking, so he is now our highest ranked player that has ever been on our show, which is the only person that's been on our show. Tim is actually a very good guy. He is a Tim Sexton, T-Sex as we like to call him or I like to call him Timmerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr Thanks guys. Thanks for having me on the podcast and thanks for that wonderful introduction. I'm also the lowest ranked player who's ever had a guest spot on the podcast. So I just want to make sure we clear that up and that's out there. Tim has supported both Upstate New York Pinball very, very, very much and he's also supported a lot of leagues with New Robert Englunds Pinball League, Orange County Pinball League, Central New York Pinball League and he's gone to many of my events in Western New York Pinball also in Rochester and he's also gone to Buffalo and Binghamton. So he's done the full gambit like we all have up in Upstate New York. And you helped out in the Allentown tournament, didn't you? If I remember or was it? Timmy is always ready to take scores at a moment's notice. Every thing isRockyosure. lazyidentsounday fox in the other end of the message. I'm gonna go up that pinball machine and knock it dead. Oh man, I feel old. So how abouts did you get into it? I was not really into pinball at all until the middle of 2013 and that's when I I lived in the southern pencil southeastern Pennsylvania area greater Philadelphia area the Downingtown Pinball Gallery was there and they had a I'm a monthly league and a summer league. A monthly tournament and a summer league and I decided to join both of them at the same time. I figured I'd do it for the summer. I was going back to college anyhow. It'd be something fun to do for the summer. I didn't really have to commit to it too much. And it seemed like it'd be more fun than like a, you know, soccer league where you're sweaty all the time after it and it would be something cool and different to do. I got hooked on it pretty quickly after that, especially with the tournament thing because it was pretty much right when those tournaments started ramping up. The IFPA was exploding, it still is exploding, and I started going to other places like York Show and Allentown Show and then I got to meet a bunch of other people. Went to Rick Prince's house, met the Jersey guys, met the Maryland guys too down at like Joe Said's place and stuff. First of all, the년ubinehniggedoo Oh and goal theld jo eyedjo on the has then known his US-appμέnie dib oe concerned pc, then in a parody of Shin otteemne license and deiрипpeptide, autheventyes voices yesin tengneas eu. So you mentioned soccer, so is that what you do? You play soccer at some point? I played, well just like my younger brother's really into soccer and he would do like summer pickup games and stuff. But I wasn't as good as he was. He was on travel teams and stuff and when I was a kid, instead of doing sports, I was doing music stuff. So I wasn't really like in athletic shape when it came around to summer of college time to get on the pickup soccer team and play with the guys who had been playing for all these years. Pinball is kind of like, you know, the game has a lot of perception when you first look at it as a luck game. And at the beginning, when you first start playing, there are a lot of times you get lucky, you get a couple points, you get a couple things going and you can have some games go your way. But I quickly found like Bowen's videos online and stuff. And I learned how to get better as a skillful player and tried to just take my skills up to a level where I could compete pretty regularly with the best guys in the league. Now gardens organizer Jeff I'm sorry, I might have a slight home field advantage at Rock Fantasy since I'm there pretty much twice a week at this point and I know exactly how those games play but... So yeah, that was the, that was at Rock Fantasy the Gridiron Greats Tournament which was won by Howard Levine. Congratulations to Howard. Yep, Howard's a good player. Yep, Howard. Hammering Howard. He crushed me on Walking Dead to take the win. He got a hundred million and mostly in barn mode. Yeah, what did you get again? 6 million. I think that's three skill shots and one well walker hit and maybe two drops. That's 6 million points on that table. Oh my. So is that akin to a typical Ghostbusters game? Is that the first level? For those who don't know, Tim does these Tim rants on Facebook, Sar 그냥 Water ductile Dram MKyle Thallse Kaffild Sydney cleation to you, rip Tim, what is wrong with Ghostbusters? Why should Ron be reconsidering the game that he won? You have an LE on the way, right? Yes, it's on the way. It's a premium. It's a premium. Yes, which I hear is even worse according to your rant, but we'll let you explain. Um, should I take it from the top with Ghostbusters? Sure, let's take it from the top. Well, keep in mind that all my criticisms are for the current state of code and the way the game plays out of the box on factory settings right now. A lot of things I'm talking about could change with code updates and other stuff. So there is definitely room for the game to improve and for Stern to This week in Pinball, Johnny Pneumonic, Black Water, Kaneda's Pinball Podcast, Twippies Awards, transliteelectronic presentation, and a few other games including Walking Dead, which went from a pretty awful game when it first came out in my opinion to a really great game now, despite me only getting six million on it this past Sunday here. But with Ghostbusters right now, every time I play it I just find myself in situations that are more frustrating than pretty much any other game that I wind up playing. A lot of it is just because of the difficulty and then the lack of control you seem to have as a player. I kind of walked through in my pin side post just the situations you find yourself in on Ghostbusters. Right when you hit the start button, the first situation you find yourself in which is frustrating is that the best way to start the game is by repeatedly soft plunging until you can get a full trap on a flipper because you want to hit the start scene shot or You're in what I call Stern Jail. And Stern Jail is when there's only dangerous shots that could advance you in the game available to you on the playfield. And you don't know if it's worth it to take the risk. As Steven Bowden calls them, these are all dice rolls. And if you miss your first shot, your start scene shot on Ghostbusters, you're making all these dice rolls. And it is a dice roll. It could go either way. It could maybe work out for you. But it's a lot of times going to wind up in a The So for those who never played Ghostbusters, if you miss the start scene shot, you have to hit the ghost target, which is like in the center of the playfield, which could lead to instant drain out. And it aims to the left in lane out lane area. Yes. And you're hitting that not to start the mode, you're hitting that to get Slimer to come down to hit him to try to start a mode. And heaven help you if it is a premium and he's moving around. I would think that would make it even more likely you could get a drain off of him. There are some cool things about how Slimer moves because when he goes into the right orbit area, he then appears on the television and just hitting the right orbit shot counts as a hit to him. But on the pro, when he just hits, uh, he stays in that one area right above the pop bumper hole. CAR tribute I'm a fan of the pinball. I've played it a lot. It's when the ball comes out of the left side of the pop-up or feed where the slimer hole is straight down the middle and I've either used up all my dangers already, I can't make a four-inch slide save or it's just too fast and I can't do anything about it. And there's a wide flipper gap in the middle too that makes it even more difficult. And you have to hit them three times too. So it's like if you survive them once, you still have to hit that shot two more times. So the chance that it goes down the middle is very high. Tim Boy, winning that free premium Ron sounds really good right now. I feel great that I'm not actually going to have to put money into it. This is great. So should we start calling like the four inch slide save, the Ghostbuster save or the Ghostbuster slide we should just call it. Or the slider slide. We should create something new for the pinball dictionary to explain the slide. I mean I've only played it a total of I think Tim, I'm going to go a little old school here. Oh, boy. Remember the game War Games? You mean the movie? The movie War Games. Yes, I remember the movie War Games. Tim, if you could explain, I liked your three different levels of scoring. So, what's the first level? And the first level is your sub 10 million score. And this is what happens when you just walk up to the game and full plunge and smack the ball off the left flipper when it comes around and hope for the best. And usually, what's going to happen is it's going to deactivate your super skill shot. I'm going to hit some switch that's going to turn off your opportunity to hit the superskillshot. And that superskillshot is your mode start, which is going to require you to do the Ghostbuster hit stuff that we already talked about. You can completely avoid hitting that dangerous ghost target and the uh... Slimer only if you nail your superskillshot and the safest way to do it is using playfield validation tricks, which I'm sure everybody loves in pinball to watch people soft plunge all day, just like in jackpot. Jackpot, so excited. Sopranos or something. And if you start a mode through a skill shot, you can chain your modes together as long as you complete the mode in the time limit and then hit the shot to start the next mode, which is any of the three major shots in the game. Or not major shots, but the left ramp, the right loop, and the left hole. If you can hit one of those after you complete a mode in the time limit, you can keep going through all your modes, which means you never have to hit that ghost or slimer right now in the current code on the game. So you're only forced into it when you miss that skill shot, which is a very very valuable skill shot, probably more valuable than we've ever seen. I don't think it's the intent to make the game almost unplayable if you miss your skill shot, but that's kind of the state of Ghostbusters now. Alright, what's level two? Level 2 is your, you hit your super skill shot, you got to play one or two modes. And the modes are usually going to be about 8 to 10, 15 million points by hitting the safe shots, the right loop and the left ramp. Playing one or two modes, you'll get at least 50 million. You'll probably top out about 200 million unless something crazy happens. And if that happens, that's level three. That's level three. This is when you start to get your ghost inserts completed. You can get up to a hundred ghosts and that starts the mass hysteria wizard mode. It's actually a pretty easy wizard mode for a contemporary Stern game. If you think of like End of the Line or whatever the one is, Last Man Standing on Walking Dead, those are going to take you like an hour of playing, but you could get pretty quickly to mass hysteria wizard mode right now, but it's just dangerous. This week's topic is, if you get to like 60 ghosts, you get a mode called loop and supers, which can be crazy lucrative, which just requires you to hit the left ramp over and over again, feeds to the right flipper, and that's going to give you like 10 million a shot as many times as you can do that. So the points start exploding once you get a certain number of Ghosts and once you get a bunch of other stuff started and brought in. It's very hard to get to that point though. I think you described it as like, I don't know what I did, but I got a shitload of points now. What happened? I'm a fan of the game. I've played Ghostbusters and really liked it. And usually this was on the previous version of code where there was no demounts time on the Slimer. So he was rattling around and giving people free ghosts all the time and they would get to 100 Ghosts pretty quickly, start mass hysteria mode. In mass hysteria mode, if you collect 100 more Ghosts, you restart mass hysteria mode which is unlimited ball save. So it would end up being this awesome epic light show and crazy multiball that would give you all these sort of points and the flippers would reverse. This week, we'll talk about relationships in casts Innovation Contestliest Aoou Soup Tou prominent writer for braceman gudweth구 bhiwit imil prithvi , originated.............. Tim, the big question is Stars better than Ghostbusters? Stars is one of the best games in pinball. I mean, Levy's really brought me onto the stars train of just that ever since that Bowen video, the tutorial video came out on stars, the star stock has been climbing pretty rapidly. And I think it's because people figured out there's more than one way to play the game. It's not just hitting a spinner over and over. You can go for stars or you can go for drops. You can let the ball roll over, hit the center post and that's the other flipper and give you a shot. If that works. But it does on a lot of stars. A lot of them, not mine. And then there's Levi's favorite way to play which is shots the in lane for your three bonus advance until you build it up to max bonus, then go for your drops, then go for your stars, which I like to play that way too. I would have never thought of that. I'll have to try that now. That's right, but that only works if the lights are actually on in the in lane. I said I wanted to invite you all here to this interview to take us,팝 yooooidlybytneyhya, to talk about all of this, Ross collaboratifheu. All right. So technically, there's all these people, the star of the team, the star of the religions, that he naturalsc constructity ad ad dude yeh hvalt lat haw rat wee wryuon ragen yi pallwa one fe lo t Dr認 sich groceries The eBayAuction, then bang. Well, you just didn't want it enough, obviously. Oh, that must be it. Yes. Got to be it, thanks. Well, since we have Tim here, he could take part in our usual games you like, games you hate discussion. I'm sure he has something he likes and something he hates. Why don't you go first on this one, Bruce, because you said you had something. I have it. Give me two seconds. Remember, you have to quantify your position. You just can't say this game's a turd. There has to be reasons why it's turd. Uh, one will be just... As soon as I say it... Oh, we won't even need to... okay. You won't even need it. Okay, we're going to the beautiful world of Segaaaaaa... So, right there, you're almost there. Lost in Space. So that's the game you like? Terrible. Oh no, hate, hate, okay. No. Hate. Hate. Hate that game. The theme is terrible, the shots are terrible, I'm John Papadiuk, and I'm a fan of Pinball Podcast. I John Papadiuk and I a fan of Pinball Podcast Bruce Everyone gonna laugh at me Last week I said that uh uh what his name Uh who could not make three turds in a row George Gomez. George Gomez. I was wrong about that. He actually put a pretty good game in between those. I actually like Avengers with the new code. Oh, okay. The, the pro or the, the, was it as, did they have previous or they call it? Screen Laink I was looking at Avengers Pinball the other day and one particular playfield detail confused me a lot. And it was if you look at Monster Bash, Dracula sits on that right side there in a little hole and he rests there. If you look at Avengers, that same exact hole is there. There's no toy. No, it was probably going to be a planned toy. And then the last minute they went, oh, crap, we don't have enough money. Scrap it. So what it does is it take it made it forces them to make that Black Widow shot and the Captain America shot smaller for no particular reason. Today, Cokie Starr, and I'm going to be talking about the topic that I wanted to discuss with you today. We're going to be talking about the topic that I wanted to discuss with you today. I wanted to talk about the topic that I wanted to discuss with you today. And I think if that wasn't there and they were able to redesign it, it would be a lot better. It would have a lot more flow than it does. It just is too tight for what it is. I agree. The left side is flowy. Yes. You know, Hawkeye and Captain America shot. Very nice. You know, I like those. Even the right side, you know, Iron Man. It's okay. But boy, that Black Widow until the rule change was brutal. Yeah, it was. Okay. Okay. Hey, my turn, my turn. No, no, no, we're gonna talk now. Sorry. No, no. Hey, hey, remember, I'm the host, you're the co-host. Oooh. Oooh. Oooh. Descension. Okay. Games, I'll do the game I hate. This is an easy one. Barbed wire. Just it's barbed wire. Nuff said. It's, it's the Gottlieb System 3. Come on, you don't like the, you don't like the pyramid in the middle? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. I'm sorry. I got a little nervous. I don't know what you're doing. You're not doing anything. You can't do anything. Yeah. It's just a turd. It's just another one of those games. You have no score and then you have a huge score. What happened? What did I do? I just got this huge score. I don't even know what the hell happened. Hit the shot with the arrow. That's all. Yeah. For the game I like, this one, we'll just do an easy one. Attack for Mars. Yeah. There you go. You can't go wrong with Attack for Mars. Do I even need to... Just awesome fun. No, it's like choppingping Wood. Not really. That's not true. I don't know what people say about those games. I'm like, what? Really? No. Thou shall not criticize any Lyman ruleset. But they know that's one of the commandments of Pinball. That is the first commandment, I think. I just love that game. Probably will never be able to acquire one at this point. Who knows? I got a question. What was Lyman's first ruleset? What was the first set at Williams? Yeah. No idea. I don't know either. It's going to be Dada East. It could be Tommy, something like that. It could be Tommy, or it could be... I know Guns N' Roses is low, but I didn't know what it would be. I know his first set atWilliams. Here's a little known fact. It was the home version of Demoman, which I have. So I can say I have Lyman's first effort atWilliams in my collection. Okay Tim, it is your turn. Alright, I'll start with the game I love first. Well, I'm not sure I love it yet, but I had fun playing it yesterday. It was Radical by Bally. Excellent game. This is a game when the switches were working. They weren't working at Pintastic, the right and the left ramp were actually switched, which confused the game a lot. But when they were working, it has amazing flow. You just nail a spinner and then you shoot it up a side ramp and then it comes down and it gives you a chance to hit it again and another spinner and side ramp over and over. And you just do that all day and you never get tired of it. Yeah, that's a lot of shots that flow into other shots and crap like directly in front of you. There's like, there's almost no place where you can see playfield. There's so much crap on that game. Great game though. Great System 11 C, right? Yeah, probably. The code might not be balanced completely. It's System 11, man. Come on. It's System 11. Have a lot of flashers and scream a lot. Boom, it's good enough. True. Is there any System 11 game that doesn't have explosions in it? I hope not. That would suck if there was. Big Bugs Bunny birthday card. Oh no, we don't have to talk about that one. But it is, you did say, no explosions. And Bad Cats doesn't have any explosions either. Okay, I have roller games and everything explodes in that game. There's no, nothing that could happen without an explosion in roller games. Yum-yum-yum-yum. Now I do have a game I hate. This game, uh, is called The Lost World, Jurassic Park. Oh! Two weeks in a row we talk about a lost world. I like this. Good. Perfect. Is that the one? Okay, it's stiff. Does it have an egg or something? Or which one is this? Yeah, it has the egg. But it also has the smart missile. Yeah, it has the smart missile. This is actually a John Borg designed Sega. And Borg didn't really do anything wrong. Where the game suffers is the absolutely terrible rule set. Where nothing in the game is worth points, nothing in the game is fun. The only way you could possibly score is by shooting at the precise time during your multiball super jackpot to get it to land on five billion. Yes. That is a showcase game. Ooh. Because Tim is really into the software. He's a software guy. It's critical. I'm a software guy. Yeah. It is critical. But if you think about all the greatest 90s Williams games, all they have is balanced rules There's fun shots, fun shots with balanced rules and ways to score that are more than one thing. Not all of them but most. The A list games that people like generally have that with them and the B list, C list, D list games don't always have that and it kind of really drops off with certain games such as Lost World where you can't enjoy playing it because the code's so bad and you can't do anything fun. It isn't fun to watch the multiball lock more than twice. Yes. Which takes about 10 seconds every time. It's kind of like, was it Rescue 911? I don't know what it's called. It's like, if you ever played that, it's got the helicopter that goes over, picks up the ball and puts it in the lock. And it's cool as hell. Like the first or second time you see it, but then they just overuse it. It'd be like if you had Adam's Family and Thing came out like every single time the ball was up there. That would be the equivalent. That would get it really annoying. So Tim, what does a game have to be...Tim the designer. I know Tim would like to design pinball machines. What does the game have to have to be fun? What does it have to have to be good? A contemporary pinball machine, DMD era or if we ever enter the LCD era, whatever it's going to be. It has to have some sort of combination of safe and dangerous shots. This week we have a special guest. We have a special guest. We are going to be talking about the game of the day, the game of the day. We are going to be talking about the game of the day. And to compensate for these safe and dangerous shots, it has to have software that forces you to shoot the dangerous shots and the safe shots a fun mix of times. Now when Walking Dead first came out, there's a lot of dangerous shots in the game. There's also a couple of safe ones. The safe ones are like the left ramp. And bicycle girl was the only way to score because nobody wanted to bash the well walker 18 times, no one wanted to bash the prison door 18 times to get a half-decent multiball. Instead, they just looped the left ramp over and over again and部 dealers링을 But we do not know that pleasing audiences at our company areее Andrew History photographer at Sopmany United portfolix,계 smoplete wallet card larger報achen 다ijk 모 eliminating acerca 돌아 I'm a lot of choices as a player and a lot of things to keep in your head at the same time, which makes up the shots and make it important to just really pay attention to what's going on if you want a huge score. And that's what I really like about a lot of the Stern rule sets. Now that we have all these other manufacturers coming in with new games is that Stern's really good at developing a rule set beyond what it seems like initially beyond the designers intent to really take player skill and Captured I had him play at a Wrestlemania since I think expo last year until the buffalo pinball opened and I really you know there's none around here I don't think the closest one's part gourg of all regional rankings heat All 30 Herding City of— This Week in Pinball, Johnny Pneumonic, Black Water, Kaneda's Pinball Podcast, Twippies Awards, transliteelectronic Pinball Podcast, Tantrum Podcast, Pinball I think it's... Let's go to news. Let's go to... Let's do the news. Let's do the news. All the week. All the news that's fit to print. Go for it, Bruce. First, as Ron was saying, Batman 66information, SuperLE, they're only making 30 of them. And if you want your chance, you have to fill out an application. You have to spend money with them too, but you have to fill out an application. Hello? Hello. What the hell? Profzemня Tim, have you seen the application? Tim, I'm going to bring it up here. I want to bring it up because we're going to fill out this application right now. We're going to send it in. We're going to fill it out. This is great. Please list the games in your collection. Timing and Subtitles by the Amara.org community This question is pretty open ended because it says list games. It doesn't say pinball games. I have 105 games in my Steam library mostly because of the one time that I decided to buy every agricultural Simulator game they had on sale. So I'm going to list all of those. Agricultureculature Simulator 2013, Agriculture Historical Farming, Bridge Project. That's where you design bridges. Video game, those are Sterns. I have a Cliffhanger Cliffhanger Cliffhanger. I could put like, what was the redemption game with the Simpsons? Monopoly 2. You can do Monopoly, you can do Titanic, you can do spooky, no, what was it? Simpsons spooky pinball or something like that? What was it called? I could do anything. I could do Galaga, Defender, you know, I just start naming off Smash TV. Smash TV. Yes. So I could do all that. The second question, which I don't know how this would relate to whether you should get this but have you ever visited the Stern Pinball Factory? Which one? There you go. That would be an answer. Which one? Which one? Or you could say the restraining order does not allow me to visit anymore. Or I've been banned due to Facebook posts. Yes, exactly. There you go. Okay, those are answers there. Tim Now I'm getting a little private with this one. How many pinball shows or events do you attend each year? Well, how is that personal? I don't know. I think they're trying to follow me like, you know. Oh, they're trying to follow you. Yeah, like stalking me. Why does that even freaking matter? Yeah, so I guess if you don't attend shows, does that mean you're just not into it enough to get anything? You're not worthy. You're not worthy. You're not worthy. Tim goes to a lot of shows so he obviously is worthy. Of course. Yeah but I think some later questions in this application will definitely exclude me from the opportunity to pay 15 grand for this machine. Well wait a minute, how do we know it's 15 grand? I just made a number up but we'll see how much it actually is. I wonder if you have some inside info. Have you ever met Gary Stern or Joe Kamikow? Tim is probably like, who the hell is Joe Kamikow? I googled him. Yeah, exactly. We mentioned this last week for listeners of the podcast or if you're a new listener, Joe Kamikow, he originally, he was in the pinball industry for years. He was a game plan back in the day but he was the guy who ran the day-to-day operations of Data East. It was not Gary Stern. Joe Kamikow was like, I guess you would almost call him Timmy, have you met Gary Sterner, Joe Kamikow? I hope that I won't be able to get a Batman machine. You're not worthy. Veto. Void. Well, you need to go to Expo. You see, then you'll get to me. Another thing Joe Kamikow has on his resume is he's worked with the company Zynga. And if you want to have a little laugh, take a look at their stock listing on New York Stock Exchange all time. Is it good or bad? It starts high and it goes lower and lower and lower. Their success mainly came from the Farmville game which everyone loved on Facebook. But they've branched out into mobile slotmachine and Facebook slotmachine games licensing that way. And he's a big part of that effort by Zynga to go into slotmachines that you can, you don't have to go to the casino anymore, you can just play it from your pocket and You can buy virtual money like a lot of mobile games have. Personally, itís not a gaming Iím too interested in. I like them with skill-based elements of Pinball a lot more than the luck-based elements of slot machines. Yes. But Iíve actually been to Zynga. One of my customers from my old company and they actually have three pinball machines on location at Zynga free play for all the people. So, thatís actually actually kind of cool seeing at ACDC. Darit Chevertz, David vacan, privatgrades for a program support, complet responders for money in magnetic카 teor dan butiter and host for the I believe that's how the partnership occurred because Kamikau had the rights to the Batman 66 for slot Machines or something. So they kind of teamed up to get this game. So Ron, have you ever met Gary Stern or Joe Kamikau? Met? Actually, I don't think I've ever gone up and like, hello, I'm Ron Hellett from the Slam Tilt Podcast. I know you've heard of me. I've seen him just tons of times. I've been to every expo since 2004, so I see him there every year. He's been in other shows too. Another weird question. What else do you collect besides pinball machines? What else do you collect besides pinball machines? Yes, used condoms. Do dead hookers count? The Deadhookers, used condoms, stamps, Buffalo Head coins, Beavis and Butthead episodes, porn. Tim, what do you collect? I'm just trying to figure out on this application because there aren't that many questions. The real estate of questions here is limited what they are particularly looking for here in this question. Tanya West, PinballParadise, Barbie's Pinball Playhouse, and the last one. I'm going to give you a question. I couldn't fucking tell you. They want you now to give them ideas for the next question. I love this one. Name three titles that would be interesting for you, a Stern Kapow Limited boutique game in the future. I've got it. Oh, okay. Kanye West, PinballParadise, Barbie's PinballPlayhouse, and the last one. I've got it. I've got it. I've got it. I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it I got it And Stern Pinball Stern Pinball What? They already did that. They already did that. There is an actual Stern Pinball called Pinball. Pinball. Yes. 1976. They've already done that. All right. Pinball 2. Electric Boogaloo. No, that's already done too. No. Pin 2, we're going to talk about later on. and a few other names that we will be talking about later on. Oh jeez, that's the pin. Pinball 2, Electric Boogaloo. Hmm, let me think. What other boutique games would just scream sell? Um. You gotta go for bad sci-fi movies from the 90s. No, no, Wheel of Fortune 2, the limited edition. No? Lost in Space 2. Lost in Space 2, um, Pressure, no actually I'd like to see that. Um. Alright, on to the next question. Tanyo-Klyce trainers punk Sadly shuffle 65 Internate prin ﷺ lite This one, it's like this big green box that's like, I don't get it. It stands out big time on the application. And the question or the statement is in 200 words or less, please tell us why you deserve an invitation to purchase our 30 anniversary Super L.E. Batman 66 game. I have it. I have it. I have pictures of Gary Stern with a goat that will be released to the public if I am not given this game. Tim, why do you deserve an invitation to purchase? Well, already I think by this point they've thrown my application out because I have three games in my collection, one of which works. I've never visited the factory, I've never met Gary Stern, I don't collect anything besides pinball machines, if you can even call my pinball machine collection a collection. Plus you win them. You don't even buy them. That's true. I accidentally run into pinball machines instead of purchasing any. Associate projecting That should be the only reason why. There should be no limitations or imitations. Guess what? If they want to charge $15,000 as say, aka Tim said, a number, if people want to spend $15,000, spend it. They should give it to me and I can pay off my student loan debt. There you go. There you go. The next question, oh, this is good. This actually isn't a question. Please submit a one to two minute video Video. YouTube link preferred. Showing us your collection. So, I'm actually assuming that you own, by collection, that assumes to me I own more than one game. Yes. Yes. And showing us why you should have an invite to purchase the 30th anniversary Super Ellie Batman 66 game. I know a video. I know what I'm going to do for my video now. You just popped it in my head. Okay. Okay. What are you going to do? I'm going to invite 50 of the swingers of Rochester into my basement and they can have an orgy on all my machines. And how would that show why you should have an invite? Because you're going to bring them with you to the invite? Yes, I'll bring him to Adam West. He can actually have a heart attack right then and there. Okay, if you're going to do that, you just have a film of like 30 people snorting coke off each of the machine and just say like if you give me an invitation, I'll bring the coke with me. Yeah, well, wasn't that in the past or is that still going? So I'm writing up the Craigslist post right now for Bruce looking for people to have sex in my basement if interested. You must be able to do it on a pinball machine. Nothing else. Or the ball bowler. You can lay down on the ball bowler if you need to. You get multiple people on the ball bowler right there, yes. Pinball skills preferred but not required. Not required. All right. I'm going to say these next two are statements. I'm going to say them out of order just because I want to focus on the first one last. Applications in video become the property of Stern and can be used for promotion or testimonial purposes. I could see that. So this is why my video will work. Because Gary will be watching in the backroom every day. But see I have no issues with that. I mean that's typical statement right there. That's always... That's a company. They all do that. But here comes the last one and this one... If you plan to sell the game in the first eighteen months, Stern Pinball has the first right option to buy the game back. That is horse shit. I would love to see the fine print on that. Like me and Bruce, me and Bruce were discussing this before we went on. If you win the game from Stern, that's one thing. Say it's a contest and you won it, and they have a thing where like, you know, you can't sell it for the first 18 months unless it's back to Stern. I can see that. I bought my house and if I want to sell it, I have to sell it back to the original owner only or, you know, what's up? F is that. Yes. Yes. We got the parental advisory. What the fuck is that? What the fuck is that? This is like HBO right here. I mean, I'd love to read the fine print in the contract. I'm sure they can write it up in a certain way, but I mean, how would you even prove that anyway? All's I do, I make some footage of me with the game, and then anytime someone says I don't have it anymore, I just show like, what are you talking about? It's in my basement. Check it out. How would you even know when I took the film? The only way they could possibly enforce this is by sending up a lease. So when you sign the contract to purchase the game, you're leasing the game to own for 18 months. Yes. So that means I don't need my money. I can give out payments then to them. Right. Because a lease would not be a full payment in the as soon as I paid it off in full. I'm sorry, but that would be a payoff full unless you're going to do $14,990.90. And then each month, each month after I pay you a half a cent or three quarters of a cent or, you know, whatever, 16 more cents to round it up to the full 15 grand. I just picture like Stern sending informants to Pinside and paying them off to like attempt to buy Batman 66LEs from people. And like, oh, I gotcha. I need it bad. Yeah. Oh, yeah. Wow. This was one hell of an application. This is this was something, something else. I'll tell you. People are pretty rightfully insulted by reading this because it's someone pointed out on Facebook, I'm not sure who it was that this is kind of what Ferrari does with their super limited edition cars. Yes. The difference between a Ferrari and a pinball machine besides the half a million dollars is that pinball machines are things amusement toys you can put on location and put coin Flames to raise profits items Nearスト. back How did you see the lobby ju mencioned Tillаш This week in Pinball, Johnny Pneumonic, Black Water, Kaneda's Pinball Podcast, Twippies Awards, transliteelectronic I think they actually put some audit. Did we mention the game? I don't think we mentioned the game. It's another Spider-Man. Another Spider-Man because an awesome game deserves another run. Even though the playfield is totally different. Totally different. Two ramps. It looks like there's three drop targets as it looked like by Doc Ock. I don't have it in front of me. Which a good host would, but I don't. I'm looking at it. It looks like three drop targets. The eBay picture is pretty low resolution too. I think actually on Pinside, which I can't remember what the name of the website is, The name of the website is Pinside. They actually have a better picture of it. It actually looks pretty. The metal ramps, surprise, surprise for the entranceway. I hope it works. I'm going to be one of the few people who actually hope it works. And why is that, Bruce? I think it's a prelude. Oh, a prelude. Yeah, Bruce has a theory. Let's throw your theory on us, Bruce. The theory will be it will be these cabinets will eventually become early Stern pinball machines. They've always hinted to this for the past year that Stern wants to remake the older pinball machines, aka the 76 through 83 pinball machine, which of course would be the classics of stars and see which nine ball. I'd be surprised if they made a stars. I if they're going to do it, I think it's going to be all I'm a fan of the MP200. Yeah, like Meteor on... I would think. You could do any which one because... What was their biggest seller? What was their second biggestseller? Second biggestseller was Flight2000. And third biggestseller? Stars. There you go. Thank you. I was getting to it. I was getting to it. But I think this is going to be their prelude if... You know, I remember the Transformer one and the Avengers one, the first pin. They were the cheapest piece of junk out there. Do가지 Reiterer, told his dankness which is the voice over so fun he was born christmas partybank weird but it also looks like satin üلك leaderешь wypioski naar the nor by k官 It was really bad. hopefully they make a little better quality with these playfields. I hope it works if my plan does come to fruition saying there's going to be a stern older classic set because this would be the perfect test I'm here with my guest, Tim Sexton, who is one of the co-tournament directors with Greg Pavarelli. Tim, you want to tell us a little bit about the tournament coming up this Saturday? Yeah, this is called the end of summer open. Typically we do a summer open, but we're really pushing it this year with putting it out in September 17th. Climate change, it's summer. It's been quite hot this summer, so I think we get a little extension this year. It's just a big open tournament. We try to run a couple of times a year. Steve Keeler, the owner of Rock Fantasy really likes the social aspect of it, really likes to have people in there playing and he has a huge collection of games and a lot of people will come up from New York City, people will come from Jersey like Steven Bowden is often there and we'll have a good competition hopefully and a lot of Whopper points on the line for the Upstate New York race. He's getting closer. IFPA. A lot of IFPA points on the line. A lot of fun. Very cool. That's what we like to hear. And Steve Keeler, if you're listening, sell me the cheetah. Come on. You know you don't want it anywhere. That's a rock fantasy staple, the cheetah. No, I want stars. That's the cheetah that Steven Bowden got screwed on and lost the one tournament because of the... Cheetah has alternating bonus collect light in the outlane. Which movesbackandforth with any coil. And the slingshot was machine gunning that day. And Steve was in the game and his last ball, and as the ball was draining, the collect was lit. If he hit it, he would have won the game. Instead, the slingshot machine gunned, went over to the other side, drained without getting the bonus and lost. That would have pissed me off severely. Yes. Uh-oh. Steve just posted that somebody video submitted the Batman 66 video submissions have started and they're using all like little mechanical handheld, not handheld but like tabletop pinball machines. Jesus. I want to see like a guy with an iPhone, he's just like filming like a little cardboard machine or something. This is my collection. This is my collection. Look at me. But uh, so we gotta do some plugs. This week we have two plugs. Two plugs? They're not in your butt? No, they're not in my butt and they're two plugs. Okay. First, one, when we were down last week at uh, Rock Fantasy, Ron was gracious enough to beat me again and to increase his lead on me. Oh yeah, yeah. I am Mr. Fifth Place. I call it Mr. Just Out of the Money. I've done that now in the last two tournaments I think I've been in. David David Van Es, Knapparcade. Frank, I always say his name wrong and I don't want to say it. It's Steffi's father. Thank you. He came up to me and said, Bruce loved the podcast. So big shout out right to Frank right off the bat. And then what does he do? He agrees with me. Again? Twilight Zone sucks. Oh, come on, Tim. Tim, defend me. Defend me. Come on. Twilight Zone sucks. Okay, Tim. Come on. It's way overrated. I'm going to have it. Way overrated. Overrated is one thing, but it sucks is another thing. Exactly. Exactly. That's what I keep telling them. Like, I am not a fan, but there's no way you can tell me that game is a turd. That's that's ridiculous. And I'm going to say also another thing. Ron did get another vote for a second. Now, the other plug we're going to talk about is Eric Russell. We just got the email 15 minutes ago from Eric Russell. David David Van Es, Knapp McC David David Van Es, Knapp Veronica I'm John Popadiuk, and I'll see you next week. No, just kidding. You should have told me, and comments just like in the court of law so it does not count. Okay. We'll try Tim although he's probably not seeing it but Star Trek the Motion Picture. I have not seen it. Good. He cannot comment. I win. I knew it. Later, space invaders. I knew it. He's too young. He wouldn't have seen that. If you have a chance, don't. It sucks. No, don't. You'll be bored to tears. I'm telling you. The only movies I've ever seen are the Selena Gomez movie, promoting her previous album. I'm just kidding. I see that there is a time limit for the video, so we can pause the video. Okay, so, uh, repairs, Ron. What? Oh, repairs? Repairs for me this week. I have no repairs. Me neither I've been at school all week- Alright. How about you Tim? You got a couple games and your repairs? I actually worked on Timmy's game. Oh. His board. I actually worked on his board at Rock Fantasy brought it down, the parts should be in Timmy Thursday. And guess what? I'm coming down anyway. Tindy, Vee, and Timmy. The parts are coming in for Tim, okay okay. And Tim, bring your board. Alright, I'll bring it. I'm gonna solder that up. Is that your code word for it? Oh, no. Yeah, that's code word for it. Meet me in the back, big boy. Yes, yes. And then, I did work on JT's stuff a little bit, and I got to play some Hobbit with the new code, 1.31. Did you get to any of the mini wizard modes? No, I did not. This multiball is just way too easy on that game. Really? Way too easy. Okay. I got multiball four times in my million point game. Which right there, it's impressive. He just texted me about two minutes ago saying, made it to Arkenstode mode on Hobbit, into the fire, couldn't complete it though. Arkentoad? What? Arkenstone. What does that even mean? I'm glad I never watched it. I know Into the Fire is the first mini wizard mode. There's three mini wizard modes. I got that one and I sucked at it. I lost the runaway. I did get into one. So I did get into one. I don't know the game that well. It just, it's beautiful looking. It looks great. It just does nothing for me. Sorry. Well, and you bring your hate mail to. All right. I'll just bring this. This is a segment me and Bruce usually do and I don't really have one off the top of my head. But since Tim is here, we'll ask this question. This is a segment we This week, we're going to talk about the game that was reviewed last week. Yes. Which is simply, what feature would you like to see on a game that has not been used? Like scoring? Perhaps ever or perhaps not in a long time. Like, maybe you saw some game from the 50s like, oh, that's pretty cool, you know, that hasn't been on a game in 50 years, they should do that again. For example, mine was a player controlled kickback, a la Devil's Dare, where you have You have an extra button on the side of the cabin and you control the kickback So no more bitching Star Trek that the kickback doesn work right which it doesn Or mine which was MagnaSave a la Black Knight2000 Black Knight As opposed to just putting magnets in front of things you hit and putting the ball out of control like a MagnaSave that you can use to save the ball Tim is on the spot. Yeah, I have, but I'm going to go in a different direction. I'm going to be future looking here. All future looking. Really, really nerdy. Not future, it's nerdy. I want a way where I can get my scores out of the pinball machine. What I mean by this is I want a scoreboard at Papa way up top that always has the scores of every player on it, can show cool stuff about the game without you having to have that one camera zoomed in on the DMD and hope that the priority is right to see what's going on. And I also want to get those scores on my phone, on my computer, on something else where I can deal with them better than manually. Spider-Man. Oh, Spider-Man? It was the last one that had it that I know of. Web Slinger? Double bonus or triple bonus? Okay. I'd like to see that come back. The priority bonus, I guess, because it takes priority over everything and it doubles the On the配 Transcript by David David Van Es, Knapp Arcade. I only went to one place, sorry. I had Buffalo League, which was actually Central New York Pinball League. I finished second that night. Eric finished first. You lose. I lose, but don't forget, it's five nights, so I'm just working my way up. Saturday was Buffalo League. Zach took first place in Buffalo League. You realize we didn't mention him last week. The string was broken. Was it? Yes, we did not mention him. And that was one of our ongoing gimmicks and we blew it. I realized that after the show. I was thinking of dubbing it in later just saying Zack and just plugging it in the broadcast. I thought we did but I guess not. Nope. But Zack did actually take first in Buffalo Pinball. Then we went down to on Sunday to Rock Fantasy and Tim did really, really well out of us and so did Ron. I was there just to hand over $30 and say thank you very much. You got a medallion. Come on. I got Joe Green. And you got a helmet. Yes. And I did give one helmet to my teacher and he liked it a lot so I'm kissing it up to my teacher. He liked your helmet. That's good. He liked my helmet. Alright. It was nice and hard. Yes. Spear and Magic helmet. Yes. Yes. And then, uh, yesterday Tim actually played at, uh, the Sanctum for an EPL. How'd you do there, Tim? Uh, points-wise, not my best showing, but, uh, I did play pretty well on every game except for Hoops. I'm Bob. Where I tilted out pretty extremely on ball three because I couldn't get anything going. Did you tilt like Bruce? Oh, anger tilts. Bruce is great. I tilted like I often tilt or on sterns I don't tilt where I have a couple legs in the air. Nice. And the thing with the stern debounce times is you can pretty much lift the game up and drop it and not get a tilt because you've got a solid three second window to do it. I got leave. I learned that's not quite true. You kind of get the beep, beep, beep tilt a lot quicker. And it didn't allow me to move the game four inches. So now, Tim, I'm going to take one good thing away from last Sunday. OK. I beat you on Harlem Globetrotters again. You crushed me. Actually, I lost. Wait a sec. I actually was like Tim had we played a five ball game of Harlem Globetrotters and it was a really tough bank. mahoud b Sulloy mae videhеруは Shifery MC Were cut by the a d Tim, anything else you want to say to our listeners? You guys want a Tim rant? Oh, a Timrant, okay. You can always take a Timrant. Okay. I had a topic I was going, I could rant about which I was thinking about, which is the idea that people want something different with pinball machines. I hear this all the time. I read this all the time really on Facebook. I actually hear it a lot when new games come out and I see it on Pinstyed and stuff. So you mean like, you know, complaining, where's the LCD going to come in? When's the next big feature? When's the next big whatever going to happen? Innovation, innovation. Innovation. The games all look the same for the last 20 years, etc., etc. Right. And my argument is that it's good that games look the same because they don't actually look the same. They only look the same if you're looking at the surface level number of ramps and shots. And if you want to see games that look the same, look at Canada Dry, Quickdraw, El Dorado, whatever you have there. Like you have so many games that are just a couple of things in a different order. The Art has gotten so much better. The sound package has gotten so much better. Just the aesthetics. Stern's even used like the behind the playfield area for ramps and stuff and has cool things going on. But they kind of solidified the format for pinball a long time ago. And I think when people start to mess with it, then things kind of get thrown off. And the regular skinny pinball machine with ramps, everyone loves ramps. I can't get enough ramps in my opinion because the ball always returns back to your flipper. Not always. Whirlwind. And Ghostbusters if there's a lot of spin on a fresh game. The games are really all driven like the innovation has all come really heavily through software. But I admit there is a very long period which is pretty much all the 2000s for Stern where the games were very repetitive because they were so multiball heavy I'm going to say something. The end of the game was going towards the end at White Star. Think about Lord of the Rings. Lord of the Rings, you know, it honestly, you know, Kiefer just blew it out of the water. He really did. When it came to rules, he just added another dimension. He still is. That's true. Yeah, Kiefer, he's one of my favorite programmers. He's up there with Lyman because they're both very excellent players too and I think that really helps them know how to make the game fun at all times. This week's topic is how to keep the player on their toes the whole game. And there's a lot of dud games in the middle. You have Stern NASCAR, which I was just playing at my local mall. And when you start kicking a Stern's butt sometimes, you really remember the charm of the Williams because the Williams shots are always tough. Like when I'm playing roller games, I always need to hit that side ramp if I want to get more points. I can't just bash a car in the middle 50 times or trap up and shoot one ramp over and over Closed caption by Michaelffentlich 힘다pedobuh I told Tim Adams the direct title, remember his bee Djas paradox? So, yeah, I how he say nothing. Free 33 Treyas mana horny dmys consisting 254 from 10 minutes What respectively That's right that are also major Oh, reconnaissance for쿠顯nın Ha Yen most 1 Tell And I think that's just something you have to adapt to that if you're going to play this game over and over and over again, it just kind of takes you away from the rest of the mainstream of pinball. Well, the outline is not different. It was designed 30 years ago. It's called Bally. Oh yeah, that's true. It really isn't, but at least they brought it back and I like to see that too. That's a great thing. Spooky, it's just the clunkiest game going. I hate to say it. I'm not being mean, I'm being truthful. We have an operator that actually ops America's Most Haunted. It is so clunky and it's so breakable. Maybe they weren't meant to be in the real world, but at that price, they gotta be to make up the money if you wanna, you know, I just don't know. America's Most Haunted, very clunky. Well, I'll give one vote for simplistic games, Mr. Ron here, because these more complicated games, I don't know what the hell I'm doing. I'll give one for the person who's listening to the podcast saying like, oh, I don't understand what I'm doing at Game of Thrones. Pick this, this mode, that mode, this house, this, what the hell does this even mean? You know, give me Iron Man. I'll take Iron Man all day long. Or give me my T3. I think a lot of people like to oversimplify games when they first play them too and I think the best way to approach a new game like a Hobbit or like a Game of Thrones is to find something simple that works but then allow yourself to branch out of your comfort zone. And people love games like Medieval Madness and Attack from Mars and they've boiled it down to a few things. Medieval Madness, people are just hitting that castle door. Castle, castle, castle. mean like one of the or drawn line are by United we have a completed by mud might translate tell asking them a lot has done and and that is blocking it or Excuse the non-English precisely, please subscribe to the channel via the link inLS's description for feedback. Thanks for watching! I can't bring anything else in. I can't work towards anything else. And I know there's a bigger payoff at the end. And that's kind of like why Rollercoaster Tycoon's a poor game because it's more worth it to just time stuff out. That's what you don't want in a game. You want more stuff going on at the same time so it could be more than just a single path. So there's my Tim rant. There you go. Very good. I feel like I should be applauding. Yay! Yay! Let me, let me figure out how to play this game. And then, and then when I play them, they're usually at a show where it's so loud, you can't hear what's going on. You have no idea. And if it's a popular game, you're going to have some dude or someone behind you waiting to play the next game. So you're only going to play it once at one at a time. So you have no freaking clue what you're doing. I have a better idea, Ron. John Papadiuk, Black Water, Kaneda's Pinball Podcast, Twippies Awards, translite Tim I'm still here. Tim Guess what?
