welcome to pinball expo 2021 i am so excited to be here i hear todd tucky is here i'm here in the stern booth right now but stern's not the only one here jersey jack is here and galloping ghost is only 20 miles away so you know we have to check that out the rumor on the street is doc mack is going to roll out the red carpet for us so what are we waiting for let's go check this place out my name is retro ralph and i love arcade games when i was a kid the arcade was a magical place the sights the sounds memories etched into my mind forever now i'm a collector and you could say i'm a little obsessed but i know there are others like me are you one of them you're chasing nostalgia with retro ralph boom shakalaka oh chicago let's talk about it would you ever believe that there's a city out there that hustles and bustles with millions of people on the daily but deeper down has an entire army rooted full of pinball on retro arcade fanatics yeah neither did i until i went to the pinball expo and galloping ghost in schaumburg and brookfield illinois with ralph the more that i filmed with him the more hype i get about being places like this so how did the convention or galloping ghosts bring the magic of the past to new light well it all starts with the question i think it would be an understatement to say that you started as a collector and you're a massive collector but what was the motivation to start that's my good question my whole dream for doing it was to honor my heroes who were the pinball designers and the artists these guys are all nine to five guys but all the head honchos of bali and got lip they get all the accolades never the guys that worked there right so i said to myself i want to recognize them i can see there's this passion in this actual expo where i'm sitting in a room and there's people talking about how to keep your machine running and they're they're literally you have designers you have engineers and they're all trying to help people and they're asking questions about hey i had this issue with this machine i've never really seen that before maybe a little bit but not to the degree here and i think that kind of is a testament to this let's pay the respects to the people that really make this hobby what it is so the pinball expo is underway and the excitement in this room right now is infectious the pinball fans are going crazy they've invaded the stern area and it's packed because of the new godzilla machine everyone wants to get a glimpse at it i even hear people saying this is stern's best title ever it's just awesome to be surrounded by all of these people that love these products so much and while i'm not a pinball fanatic myself i could see how easy it would be to become one the people the pinball culture it's exciting and the fans love it all you have to do is just take a quick look around and that's evident that the pinball culture is thriving and it's full of life we're surrounded by retro the camera is going everywhere with us but while people enjoy the show ralph and i went to dinner at the show we met a ton of awesome people and on night one ralph got to meet one of his idols todd tuckey himself from tnt amusements him arcade hollywood myself and a bunch of other people left the pinball chaos to eat ralph was in awe like seeing a kid in a candy store the food was great but if you thought because we all left the show floor that the retro theme of the week would disappear you are mistaken collecting arcade machines the pinball scene and many other topics were discussed at the table there was a special energy in the air and everyone was just excited to be in the same room for the first time in a while the dinner was awesome as people got to connect with old friends but also we got to make new ones meeting everyone in this community really set the tone for the week and we were excited to see what else was in store [Music] you guys having a good time at the show oh look what it is it's wreck-it ralph senior wreck-it ralph channel it's a retro route yeah i got there's a couple games i want to check out over there so i'm trying to see you guys no no no no this ain't over what wait what so yeah you got to meet the tnt twins they're good guys and truly larger than life characters look we haven't been here long and my experience so far has been amazing but today my buddy arcade hollywood said he has something epic in store for us the rumors are true we are headed to galloping ghost arcade and we're gonna go see doc mac he is gonna spend the day giving us the full all-access tour of the arcade production studios pinball building and a special surprise i can't believe this i'm at galloping ghost galloping ghost [Music] when i think back to some of my first experiences with arcade games i never thought it would land me here this place is every arcade enthusiast's dream i remember when i was younger my mom would drop me off at the dream machine an arcade in lincoln rhode island never did i expect to end up here at galloping ghost with legends like todd tuckey and doc mack i'm in the biggest arcade in the country with them together in the same room breathing the same air this is absolutely insane how many games are here right now at this very moment we have a few over at pinball expo but uh currently there's 845 games that you can play here at the galloping ghost arcade it can't be easy to keep that many games up and running like what is that like a big challenge for absolutely is it's an everyday thing right now we probably have about 35 games down it was at 804 we were at 100 it's just a constant thing so i feel like you can feel the energy in this place it's good to know that places like this exist and it's if anything people see this and go it's alive and well right it's alive and well and it keeps going which is great so i know as a collector i appreciate that you take that torch and hold it high for everybody so that's awesome favorite game i would still probably say narc is my favorite game given the history that uh the one that we have here is unique to us because we had this huge narc event and george petro who was working on the game the night before he finished an unreleased level i got to play this i know i keep hearing that it's you play in a helicopter right you're not in a helicopter you have unlimited missiles so it's just kind of no way okay taking the streets back and blowing everything up that's awesome not only is there a huge collection of arcade games here but there's unique arcade games that you can't find anywhere else they're not even emulated in maim because the boards are specific to this location and can't be found anywhere else okay so this is sega's laser ghost now why this is so unique is number one i don't think it had a north american arcade release but when you're playing the game and you walk up on someone playing it you don't see the laser they're shooting unless you look through here there's like some kind of voodoo magic effect and it uses this glass that's right here on the controller it's really cool it did have a sega master system release but i think it was a completely different game but this is one of those hard to find you know you're probably gonna only find it here at gallop and go so if you end up coming here you definitely gotta check this out the lesser popular and super cool midways the grid this is like ed boone's project after mortal kombat this is super cool it's a third person arena shooter so not really a genre you see very much in arcade gaming the only other game that's like this there was a game by atari war final assault it's very similar i think it came out before that and this one kind of perfected it and one of the cool things that gallop and ghost has as a galloping ghost exclusive is there's this development kit for the grid that was donated by todd allen so this is the kind of stuff actually it says don't touch it i just touched it but yeah you can see the original development boards the controller and the trackball so pretty neat okay if you know me then you know i'm not the biggest star wars fan in the world but this is kind of a cool game because i guess this is like a japanese only release so this game doesn't exist anywhere in north america unless someone imported it like galloping ghost did it's kind of cool you can play sort of as the pilot or the gunner which is pretty neat and it has this like gigantic dlp tv so it's pretty fun i'm not the biggest star wars fan but if you are a huge star wars fan i think this is a game you probably want to check out okay tucked in the corner here is a sinistar environmental cabinet a cockpit you never see these you normally see a normal williams stand-up sinistar so i'm going to try to get in this and see if i can play it it's kind of tucked in between la machine guns oh i made it i'm in you got a mine for these little crystals to make a cinnabon but you don't want to break these craters apart because you'll get less of these little pieces you need to build the cinnabon we'll help mason run primal rage 2 the unreleased sequel to primal rage which is right over my shoulder the reason why this game was cancelled was because it was around the time when arcades were in the decline and honestly it just wasn't a big draw for fans at the time but the cool thing is is you can play it here at galloping ghost it is available under emulation but why would you want to do that when you can play it on an actual arcade cabinet pretty cool the game's probably like 97 done but it's still pretty fun i mean for me growing up and being at an arcade my arcade was nowhere near as fast and dense as this is the density here is crazy and just like that there were still over 800 something games to be uncovered but there was just one that had all of our attention the sega r360 emergency button press i hit the emo wait did you mean to push that oh wow i felt that i was just firing down the control top should i take things out of my pocket i'm kind of nervous for this no i don't think doc wants to be thrown up in there i'm suiting up i'm suiting up yeah i'm impressed with this that's the only thing i can relax on behind you uh you can either asleep passed out mason did you pass out you okay well that's a different reaction than me that's a different did you did you hit anything thank you because because i tell you if you've actually like what the hell what the hell good job bud the sega r360 was released in japan in november of 1990. you get the idea you get into it you strap yourself in and you spin using gyroscopic mechanics for the motion critics praised sega for its innovative use of the technology and one critic claimed that the machine helped establish sega's arcade presence to the industry at that time with only an estimated 100 units being produced it's no wonder you never see it anymore a two-player successor to the r360 titled the r360z was released in 2015 for the game transformers human alliance according to the one a uk video game magazine the original cost over 120 thousand dollars and as far as doc knows only a handful still exists today the r360 is wicked awesome i'm so stoked i got a chance to play it it was so fun but it's like it was so disorienting it's so it's crazy that is truly a once in a lifetime experience it's time to go but just when you think you've seen all of galloping ghosts you haven't just next door is where galloping ghost productions is located it's the birthplace of their exclusive 2d digitized fighting game called dark presence doc let us play it and it's very reminiscent of the games like mortal kombat that became popular for their use of realistic digitized sprites dude no no what's going on actually if you're able to finish the game without continuing these come out through the front of the cabinet the first person to complete the game without continuing wins one of these statues they're sculpted by a guy from mcfarland toys it's coming soon to arcades and consoles in q1 of 2022 galloping ghost productions also offers services like reproduction artwork custom art logos graphic printing 3d printing and even pcb repair and rom burning after all this i thought there couldn't be anything more to see then doc invited us to gallop and goes pinball just a few blocks away a separate building with over 40 pinball machines i was shocked when i walked in i saw the never release predator machine i loved that movie as a kid and the design of the machine truly does the movie justice it's a shame that it never was released but it can be experienced exclusively at galloping ghost and it's the only one in existence today what an amazing trip to galloping ghost i hope i get a chance to come back soon thanks doc so much for your hospitality you truly are a hero in the arcade world and we're all thankful that you protect the legacy of arcade gaming i'll be honest i got distracted and i wasn't even looking at the screen anymore i was just trying to figure out i was looking at the handle yeah i was just trying to figure out i didn't feel like i was in control of the game we're back at the expo and i was immediately drawn to the fun with pinball exhibit not only is it set up to show a new generation how pinball machines work but there's also a bunch of really cool interactive experiences all built from retired pinball machine parts i was so lost in the excitement of playing with everything that i didn't even realize i was learning at the same time while i don't know a lot about the inner workings of a pinball machine i left with a much better understanding pinball is a completely different animal than arcade gaming but i know this i'm curious to learn more is a pinball machine in my future machine dude only time will tell you're like the arcade hero for me i'm a hero you are i don't know exactly the roots of how you got started in the business how what started all this i guess it was 15 years old and i found a pinball machine cheap and i bought it we had a lot of fun playing it and i kind of tinkered with it but i never thought it'd be like a hobby from that point on i would try to buy and sell pinball machines over the years i had a buddy at the time we bought a group of games together from a vendor that closed down and it was older mechanical pins but it was never going to be like going in business i had no interest really in operating them but my aunt uncle bought a boat dock they wanted a game room so i started buying games for them for their game room and that's how i learned how to fix this crap and i bought my first brand new games to operate then i got a partner in 81. we were doing okay and then all of a sudden the bottom dropped out we were in big trouble he said let's try to sell some of this crap so let me put some games out front of my house okay and i put down a big sign on top a hundred dollars and up and that's what started game sales black and white games were 100 to 150 dollars okay and color started at 175. how much was the tempest back then two and a quarter now they remember we weren't rebuilding them we wiped off the screens we made sure we plugged them in we weren't even checking ground plugs if it worked it went out but remember we're looking at equipment that was new only a few years before vendors were dropping off truckloads to my driveway did you did you in your mind think that fast forward that first of all you'd still be doing this today no no of course not but the idea of having a full-blown game room was not there yet there yet yeah and people had one or two games and i put them in rec rooms i remember delivering one or two in a bedroom but nobody was thinking full-scale games but now the retro arcades are opening everywhere i pioneered the flat rate arcade what do you think the future is for this business oh that's easy it is that's an easy one are you kidding this business is exploding the arcade one-ups everybody says oh you heard the okay what no i don't hate you the arcade one ups has created brand new demand for arcades that's easy to see you just open up your eyes like this i appreciate what you do and how you contribute to this community i was already fired up i'm more fired up now tnt plays a huge role in making sure these games
