Yeah, that's pretty good. So it's all good. My car lit on fire in 2019 My cat died last week You know and I actually want to talk about that I don't know if it's too fresh for you but But Sassy was a great cat and we had a picture of Sassy on the front of Pinball Map when we very first started it. She was crawling into my Paragon machine. The glass was off and she was walking on it while we were trying to repair it. That was kind of a tell her like that, you know, she was always right there while we were first working on this site and a great companion. Sorry to see her go. One more Sassy story and then we'll get to 2018. I am a former owner of World Cup Soccer. Not a huge fan of the machine, mostly because of the theme. I don't care for soccer. So it's a weird machine for me to own. But I had a picture of Sassy taped under the glass on where the rules cards would be. The end of two long-term relationships I've had. Sassy and World Cup Soccer. Closed Caption by Josh Yeah, at least you sold it, World Cup soccer, to a friend and you could still hop over there and play it sometimes. Yeah, that's true. That's true. Yeah. Take me back to a better time, to a better year. Last year, 2018. Everything was going great. So here's what we did. We started a podcast which you're listening to. That was cool. We made a region-less map. That was a pretty big deal. The All the regional Maps combined together into one super map we Launched a patreon which is holding steady and really helping us with our costs. Yeah That was a great idea um Is that your idea? I? Think so. I think I I think I had that idea like years ago, and then we never did it But we're not I'm not looking for credit. Okay, okay The end. But you can't take the credit so we gotta share that. We made new shirts including a new design like Portland Pinball Map shirt which I was wearing the sweatshirt of that today at the Los Angeles Zoo. Nice. You know I'm still waiting to run into somebody in public that I don't know wearing one of the shirts. It's a really petty thing, it's a really petty part of my brain that's active every time The That hasn't happened yet. Renee wore one Yesterday, and I saw her and I was a little surprised to see and I was like, oh, yeah, cool cool that almost counts I don't think that really counts my wife Renee I saw someone once wearing one really someone you didn't know. Yeah someone. What do you do there? Do you do you say hey nice shirt? No, I don't think I said anything Rudolph M계 What other cool things happened in 2018? Stern Pinball launched their new website and they have a pinball locator on it that uses our API and our data. Stern has a thing called the Stern Army. The Stern Army are locations that run promo events for them, I guess, like the launch events and they get a lot of swag, I'm guessing. I think that's all they really know. We created a tag on our site where we can tag locations as Stern army locations. On their locator, the locator basically when you load it, it shows all the stern army locations. Then you could do additional searches, which we're actually in the process of updating a bit to make the search even cooler than it is right now. But that's still cool, like they're using our data for The school and weird and existential to some degree to be working with people who are getting paid to interact with our API Real business professionals, you know, I don't know. Yeah, I find that I haven't found a place for that yet It's a pie. It's a positive thing. I just don't know how to file it away I don't know. I guess I'm thinking of them typing and who typing like this the staff members Yeah, kinda. Like the person who's on the other end poking around at the API and punching a timecard and logging time against working with the pinball map and then you and I are on the other end of the email like, hey sir or ma'am, can we add a feature for you? You may. The last thing on my list is that we've started a total app rewrite which is still ongoing Financially that is a huge deal. I guess we could give a status update for that right now. It really did slow down a little bit during the holiday as things tend to. But, since then we have been zooming along still Beth is doing a really, really great job I love the app. I open it and I'm happy to be in it everytime. I like how it looks, I like how it functions. I think it's going to be just a massive improvement. You know, it just basically builds off of what we've learned over the years with the current apps. One thing I actually was thinking about the other day that I like about things like projects that take this long is that it gives you a lot of time to take your time and make it really good. I've like refined the style on the pages, you know, a dozen times already. And that's good, because it The And I wouldn't be able to do that if we had like a deadline of like one month from now I just have to like work as quickly as possible. Well in the thing I've and I'm more of an outsider here I help out with the API as we need it. But the thing I've heard come up between you and Beth a couple times is Borrowing Things that work well in other apps, you know best practices at this point Which maybe weren't as defined when the original apps were created So they'll feel a little more familiar for people who use their phones all day using other, you know, million dollar apps. Yeah, yeah, I definitely rely on looking at these professionally made other apps and websites and seeing how they design things, like just cherry picking ideas off of all those and I'd be a little lost without those. And I don't think it's anything to be ashamed of to use ideas from other people. No, thanks for the ideas, Silicon Valley idiots. Thanks for all that R&D. Thanks for the free ideas, tech bros. Yeah. I went too far, I'm sorry. Yeah, I don't know, you seem to have. So yeah, that's the year in review. Well I guess we could I could also throw in stats from last year too because I have all those And you know you can really compare them to the year before you could but i don have the year before is in front of me so you can but let see your stats this i gonna just churn through these we had thirteen thousand four hundred and seventy nine machines added to locations and nine thousand one hundred and three machines removed so it a net increase of four thousand three Sim decks though fabric, Atomicginesourtland, your average good pinball place has what, four machines? And the truly great ones have, you know, ten, twelve. So just to think across the whole country that there's this many places with pinball, just seems, uh, I don't know. It's more than I expected. Yeah, and those are just machine edits too. That's like people just adding or removing them from locations. I mean, including money Kwang Yet map edits wise we had over 13,000 machines added last year and 9,000 removed. That seems like a ton of edits considering how many are out there. Mhm. And we had 5,578 location confirmations. Oh nice. Thanks. Thanks for those. Machine comments we had 9,690 machine comments. GI is out. G.I. is fixed. Uh, 1950 location submissions, 855 scores added, and I think at the end of the year we're at 6157 users, like registered users. I have a feeling when that new app comes out, all of this is gonna blow up. The region list stuff, right? Like the new app is Pretty much 100% region lists, right? Yeah, the new apps hundred percent region lists then the current apps are 100% regional So there's no region list stuff on the current apps right now. Yeah, so yeah, it's totally gonna change the game I have to give people explanations these days when you know, somebody submitted two locations in Brazil last Friday and I do not have a Brazilian region at this moment. What did they say back? They did not say anything back. I send a lot of responses to people and do not receive responses back. That is kind of the name of the game. I think people submit stuff and they say so long after that. But there was actually a pretty cool thing that came out of the game. while 494背Book back ит Iso über Jagiell rac conclusions sore corners just likeовые k cognac baby in a zillge genative BE helbo Pompely a Augmanildop x pha and x first Mike a early eighties like eighty two eighty three time hand holketas barriers and same way out as fathom gives you see inhiemand care of it Run Platform and then vortex was a re-theme of blackout okay yeah so i i don't know if tight all of tito's games are re-themes or not i don't think they are but still it was cool those were three machines that we had never had on the map at all and it's cool that they're like you know in brazil and still working yeah yeah i like that So that's the year. Now we're moving on to this year. Hope we can have another good year like last year. Yeah, I have a feeling pinball map-wise this is gonna be a good one. The other thing, I don't think we... did we talk about this last time we met? Our own personal map server? Tile server? Up and running? So we're on Maptech now, and what were you saying Scott? Oh, I was just saying that we have our own Maptile server. We are off the grid. We've created our own grid for maps. Yeah, I know literally it is a grid of maps. So do you want to give any details about it? Sure. So we're using open map tiles and the good folks there or some mega fan of theirs created a docker container that would docker being imagine it's like a spell book for how to how to take a system of many programs and dump them onto a computer such that the computer knows exactly what programs and versions box on one120produלive, read rise on Twitterärke where it is right now. Bioród autour metric expectciplars-תா्إี้ embaixoère Marc Silk Compan còn שiblings Shockť redesign aitj przed that we're not going to spend more than graphically at least $は Mathots Isle Unchecked Trackbook avoir detto I think that data is sourced from OpenStreetMap so it varies from area to area. I think we need to get a setup where we're like refreshing the tiles because those get updated a lot too, showing new business information and things like that. But yeah, they are overall sparser than the Google Maps ones which you can't compete with. Google Maps is tops, like it has the most information on it. I'm thinking, do I really need to... Is this what I'm doing here? I'm trying to find where the local Karl's Jr. is or something. I just want to know where the pinball machine is. Yeah. So probably it's good enough. I don't know. Yeah, and you can do cool stuff like you can create your own themes, which right now we're using a default theme, but I did create a theme with colors that kind of match our site colors, which will add that themed base map to it, which sort of... The The Patreon money is super super helpful but wouldn't cover that. So what we can cover now is the cost of our server hosting of our own map tile server and then we got the software for free. So yeah that was almost the end of the pinball map. Yeah and it feels cool to be self-sufficient there too like to know these tiles are loading just for us. Franchirendo кли revive spin version of Dead Moon ride™ Overcoming the The I have this on my list apparently we haven't talked apparently that's kind of that new so we added Again, this is not on the current app. It's only on the website and the app we're working on But we have a saved locations feature where if you look up a location There'll be a little heart icon next to its name and if you click that while you're logged in, if you click that, then that location gets added to your saved list. Man, it feels like we talked about this, but maybe not. No, we totally didn't because I remember doing it over the holiday break in a fit of rage. So that was after the last podcast. Yeah. Who were you angry at? Co director Scott Klok Presentedister Jun Mt Program management Kanchai Project management Timed to work on pinball map stuff So it was a lot of little code features here and there adding up together and I just remember putting on a dumb TV show and plowing through it Nice. So on the website at least, if you've saved one place, there'll be a link that says saved map or something, saved map, yeah, and you click that and it loads a map just showing the locations that you've saved. Drag The point system, the badges, whatever it is people want to see. And yeah, the save feature is exactly that. It's a way to make the app kind of their own thing. That's all I got from MapTech. Oh, I guess, yeah, I guess app stuff, which it's hard to put a percentage on how far through it we are. 80% maybe? I feel like we're really, really close. There's only a few more features to be added and then we'll have beta testing Beta testing for Patreon members? Yea, Patreon members can beta test and admins also. You are testing on iOS and Beth is testing on Android? Is that true? She tests in an iOS emulator and I sent her an Android phone that I had so she can use that. I've actually been on the bus years ago and I've looked over old ladies' shoulders and seen them with Windows phones and they've, it seems like a good operating system for the elderly. It's the second story in this podcast episode that involves you around an old woman. You don't know my definition of old, it could be, you know, 40. Okay, fair enough. Yeah, yeah, I remember my my grandma who's just actually today is her 98th birthday. She wanted to get a cell phone a few years ago. And I wanted to recommend Windows Phone because she uses Windows and whatever version of Windows she had is the was the I think the one with like all the tiles on it, which I think they don't use anymore. But I just thought she'd be real familiar with it. If she moved and had a Windows Phone. Maybe some sort of scheduler for making sure you take your medication on time. I should shut up because I don't know what I'm talking about here and I don't want to stereotype. But yeah, you wrap it all up. and the nearest uh... I'm gonna bail on this, cuz everything I say is just gonna be short-sighted and offensive. I just think- You were gonna pick a particular machine that old people like? No I was gonna- where my head was going was like where would old people wanna I'm not going to play pinball and it immediately went to places that probably aren't true. So I'm just not going to say anything at all. Except my heart is in the right place. I feel like the elderly if they want to use smartphones like everyone else, they deserve a high level of service that is tuned to their needs. And I feel like if that's not being presented today, that's what we should be doing now. And this podcast today and the pinball map. That's what we're focusing on after this.ας grooveabein Zitelină pilə̀nàрzişeçkiė Marko Naiņăc Sigilană GGI ڡumun THE SOFT Start I actually have a few fun stats. So if we wanna hop back to stats for a few minutes? Fun stats 2019? fun stats 2019, here we go so and this is a quiz for you Do you think that there are more comments — machine comments that mention the left flipper or the right flipper Oh man, so my head immediately goes to right flipper because more people are right handed, maybe your natural instinct is to hit that right button. Well you're right. Yeah, that's just sound logic, right? Yeah, there's 281 comments that say the phrase right flipper. Nice. And there's 241 that say left flipper. They're pretty close though. 241, 281. Yeah, that is pretty close and then here's another stat which this is just something I noticed when I was adding locations. I Was surprised by how many locations had the name JJ? Double J in the name of their business She's weird. Yeah, like JJ's lounge or something like that. I was like, why are there so many JJ places? So here's my theory Okay, aside from name combinations like James John like there I don't you know Hey, I'm in St. John's, Oregon right now. James John is a big deal here. I bet the real reason is because some, you know, like Jimmy Bob sort of combo. There's something that's JJ, but maybe it's the second J is Junior. And what we're really seeing here is a lot of John Juniors. Or Jeff Junior maybe. Yeah, Jim, Jim, James, like all that stuff. Just a theory. Demis Taalbaugh Lew Oswaldяниy, Capt Hua, Those are the only fun stats I came up with though. Wow, okay, alright. Yeah, I think I had others, I mean I could straight up, I have the SQL up right now. Doing a live quiz? Yeah, alright, here's another one. Okay. How many locations do you think have the name, have the word lucky in their name? Lucky, oh boy. I hate that word. I hate that word in the context of stuff like this. Yeah. Yeah, go ahead. Let's see. I can't remember. I think I can remember my name. I'm not sure. Retrocade. Yeah, but I don't think... Judging by the full names of these places, I don't think Retrocade is trademarked yet. Okay. Well, it shouldn't be. It's a dumb word. Sorry. I love Retrocades. It just feels lazy to me. The name feels lazy. Retrocade? No one cares about that. I'm gonna go with... 25. 25? No way. Yeah I feel like the retrocades tend to be bigger right So it has to be in a bigger city There probably not one use the one princess title right awayoyo see engaged such teams as the number concept and title rework This stuff is now apparently Huge uh by et some other Next time there's a lot lot of places we can go with these stats how many laundromats have pinball how many users have AOL accounts I wanted to do a tips and tactics we also mentioned in chat at least the Scott's fantasy game but I don't know if you want to spill that on a podcast I'll tell my fantasy game but I was thinking about my fantasy game today at dinner and how when I was typing it out in the official Pinball Map chat room how it felt like a revelation. I felt like I was discovering Iceland or something like that. Like really doing something. But now in retrospect I feel like this idea is probably floated around many a late night bar room. You know like this is the sort of stoned notion that's probably come to a million people's minds. You know what I mean? Like it, I don't know. Let me throw it out there. Yeah, yeah, I don't know. It felt pretty unique and felt like a good idea to me. It's just so... We'll see. I just feel like it's so obvious. Somebody's made this as an offhand comment and they talked about it for longer than five minutes. But anyway, here's my pinball machine idea. And this is a tip and tactic? No, we're in a new section, segment called Scott's Fantasy Game. Oh, fantasy games. Okay. So here's my fantasy game. The theme is you're a pinball tech and the machine itself, You may be Flipper's weak, you have to do a mode to get your flipper strong again, pop bumpers turn off, etcetera, anything that could break on a machine is fair game for being a mode in the game. And then my new tech here is that there'll be a mode where the ball has to touch every piece of the playfield in order to clean the playfield and that gives you a different type of bonus. And I have an elaborate magnet system that I've invented in my head, and I have no Broadcasting Cl Assass na Amant叫 convenient al Sigall conclude And then dinner continued for a little bit more and I was like, oh, that's right. I'm a software development manager in Portland, Oregon who knows nothing about machines design or anything. And then my life continued mostly the same. Well, I was thinking we could incorporate pinball map into that too by so like here's what it here's the theme. It's your attack. You're sitting at your headquarters waiting to learn about a problem with one of your Some of the most popular pinball machines on your route, someone leaves a comment on the map, you get pinged. You get a message that says pinball map message, somebody left a comment saying the left flipper's weak on Hawkman and then you gotta, in the game, drive out to that location and then you start playing that machine which has a weak left flipper and then you need to like hit some shots to fix that left flipper and then you get another message from the pinball map. Yeah. Man, there is a chip inside. And you can put this in here? Yeah. And you really wonder what it is. Right. Yeah, it's a no no. I think you could make this fine just by 대한für Danielle W winner I think my idea was like a ball trough that spits out two balls when it's supposed to have one, but if you drain one, your ball ends. Multi balls that give you one fewer ball than you want. You know, so basically the game is filled with glitches, and then you need to fix those glitches. It would be a really fun game. Yeah, hey Gary Stern, I know you're listening. I know you're listening to this podcast, Gary. He's listening. He's listening. I respect what you've done and I want you to continue the good work. Consider this idea on the house. Wow, on the house? He could still like hire us to just, you know, hire you at least to lay this out on paper, all the modes. Yeah, I guess. Now they have Keith there and he used to be an operator. Yeah. So he could do it. Hey Keith, I know you're listening. This one's all yours buddy. Gary, it was Keith's idea.
