### Signals

- **[gameplay_signal]** 4 Million B.C. features multiple interconnected mechanical systems: dynamic flipper control (targets that open/close flippers), multi-ball modes (2-ball and 3-ball), skill shot with cliff hazard, ball-lock mechanism in tar pit with ball kicker advancement, and zipper flippers. The gameplay demonstrates fast-paced action with simultaneous events (multiball + gate opening + kickback activation). (confidence: high) — Host detailed tutorial of all major features, plus gameplay demonstration showing rapid mechanical sequences
- **[gameplay_signal]** The machine rewards strategic planning: players can lock balls to trigger multiball modes, prioritize skill shots (worth 3,000 points), aim for specific targets (tar pit for lock advancement, volcano for multiball trigger), and manage flipper position (zipper flippers require precise timing). Competitive play shows players stealing locks from each other. (confidence: high) — Host commentary on strategy ('lock balls and skill shots'), competitive match showing targeting and flipper control techniques, discussion of which shots are 'big money'
- **[design_innovation]** The tar pit ball-lock mechanism with automatic ball kicker (ball walker mech) that returns balls to the shooter lane for repeat skill shot attempts is presented as a notable mechanical innovation. Host expresses that this feature 'must have blown people's minds in 1971.' (confidence: high) — Host detailed explanation of tar pit mechanism and explicit commentary: 'This must have blown people's minds in 1971. It's just packed full of so much cool stuff.'
- **[historical_signal]** 4 Million B.C. (1971) demonstrates mid-era Bally electromechanical pinball design with sophisticated target-based rule architecture, multi-ball modes, and dynamic flipper control. The complexity and feature density illustrate the evolution of pinball game design in the early 1970s. (confidence: high) — Host commentary framing the machine as innovative for its era; feature set includes advanced mechanics (zipper flippers, dynamic gate/flipper control, ball kicker, 3-ball multiball) not yet standard in all machines
- **[restoration_signal]** 4 Million B.C. arrived at Grazy Garage in very good condition and required minimal work ('practically plug and play'), suggesting either excellent previous maintenance or successful restoration prior to filming. (confidence: high) — Host statement: 'this machine came to the Grazy Garage in very nice condition, practically plug and play'
- **[content_signal]** Pinball Shenanigans produces detailed mechanical tutorials combined with gameplay demonstrations. This format breaks down feature functionality via hand-demonstration first, then shows features in action during competitive play to maximize clarity for viewers. (confidence: high) — Host structure: 'I'll demonstrate the features by hand because during gameplay I want to make sure I show them all off. And also, things happen so quick and fast...it's a little harder to see.'

## Transcript

All right, I'm here at the Grazy Garage with Kevin and today we're checking out this 4 million BC Bally game from 1971 made by Ted Zale with a really cool art package. Obviously dinosaurs is the theme and this machine came to the Grazy Garage in very nice condition, practically plug The game is packed with a lot of cool features. We've got a sossor here where you can lock a ball to do two ball multiball. There's also a three ball multiball. There is zipper flippers. We've got targets that open flippers, targets that close flippers. There is a cool skill shot where you've got to plunge and not go over the cliff. If you get to the top, you get the most amount of points, 3,000 points for that. The Satellite is a 3-ball multiball. Roll over buttons here too that turn on the kickback, open and close this gate so the ball can actually go back into the shooter lane where you can plunge for another 3,000 points. And let's demonstrate some of those things. I'll cheat by hand first and then Kevin and I will duke it out in a game head to head on this 4 million BC. All right, got the rig set up here and I'll demonstrate the features by hand because during gameplay I want to make sure I show them all off. And also, things happen so quick and fast, like all of a sudden you can be kicking back, you can be multi-balling, opening, closing, flippers, gates opening, closing, all at once. And, you know, if it's all happening all at once, it's a little harder to see. www.gattie.com and they're color-coded look blue green red and so there if you plunge too hard and go over the cliff then you at least get all your pop bumpers lit but if you manage to hit this pterodactyl there's your 3000 points and then you roll back down and you've got your skill shot there so you can close your flippers like i said with this switch and you can open them with this same here This closes, this opens, and I'm not quite sure how this works, but I think if you go into the volcano when it's lit for 2000, oh now, okay, I see, so now it's random. So when I do release this ball, it will give me whatever value it happens to land on. And in order to release this ball, I need to hit the erupt volcano mushroom target. So let's do that. And that also closed the flippers and gave me a two ball multiball. So that's pretty cool. The kickback is now lit. So I'll show that off. And these, I forget what these do. This one, I think opens the gate here, which allows you to go back into the shooter lane to give you a chance at a skill shot. That's going to be your strategy on this game if you're playing in a tournament is lock balls and skill shots. So let's drain out one of these balls. Back to a single ball play. Oh, apparently draining a ball opens your flippers too. I didn't quite realize that. Another cool feature is the tar pit. So if you lock a ball, shoot a ball into the tar pit, it locks a ball into the ball walker mech. Gives you another shot at a skill shot. See if I can nail it. A little too much. So as you just saw there hitting the center mushroom target advanced the ball down the ball kicker mech which is really cool This must have blown people's minds in 1971. It's just packed full of so much cool stuff. So now that I have a ball in here this gate closes so now I cannot lock another ball. It's just meant for only one ball so that's kind of a neat thing too. So here we go to advance the ball. Now we can lock a ball into the volcano. Also, so this switch here, I think we'll turn on this. Well, this switch here turns on the kicker. This turns off the kicker, but turns on the gate. So you want your kickback on. If you can help it, you can't really control it too much. But so now a big money shot here, ball locked in volcano, Thank you for watching. Thank you for watching. We'll be right back. Okay, we're back. We got a two-player game. Actually, no, we don't. Now we do. And we're going to play some 4 Million BC. Okay, I'll be player one. And let's see what happens here. Going for the skill shot. Almost. These are going to be pretty quick balls. And we can steal each other's locks, too. See who the biggest thief is going to be. I had some zippage and some unzippage. There we go. Okay, so let's see if I can kind of strategically go for the tar pit. Not so much. Oh yeah, you want to drain in the outlanes because they're worth a thousand points. Draining in the middle. This is a video of me playing the game. I want to go for... oh man, now you can steal my lock. The score is 7,000 to 300. But if he steals my lock, he could get 5,000 points right there. Yeah, the machine is on wheels, so we can maybe kind of take advantage of that. Ah, it comes harder. Okay, I'm going tarp it. Whoa. I'm going to try to get a little ball control. Imagine that. Oh! I can actually even aim a little bit on these baby two inch flippers. See if I can trap up again. Oh, almost a free tar pit. No! I wonder if I should be prioritizing tipping my flippers. Oh, get in there. Every chance, another score shot, there it is, I am. Score's getting a little tighter now. Who's gonna get the messy ball? The volcano's ready to erupt. I can't believe neither of us have hit that yet. Okay, back to me. This is ball four, player one. I'm going to go harder this time. Yeah, that's money. Uh-oh. Oh man, I didn't even like to flip it hard enough. It was a half flip. I was too busy moving the machine. 12 to 6 that shows you just how important that skill shot is We haven't seen it go... No, we did see it go into the shooter. Have we seen it kickback yet? I can't believe we haven't hit the multiball yet. There it is. Don't walk a ball. Thank you for watching. 1000 for going out the out lane. This is ball five. There's the score. 12,020 to 13,200. The skill shot. I haven't had a multiball yet. All right, this is it. Not quite. Come on, carpet. I need car. Carpet. Getting some 100 pops. It doesn't hurt. Don't you dare. Uh-oh. Shit! Okay, I'm at 14,800. One skill shot here will do it. Oh, 100 pops. You need 800 more points. 600 more. Thanks for watching. This is kind of just like a seaball hit ball game. I mean, I can try a bounce pass. That actually worked. Flipper control is a little more difficult on this. Let me live, let me live. Kevin's up. I have 3,000 points. Good value in the pots. Better to over plunge than under plunge. Nice nudge. Who's going to be the first to get a target? Oh, free... We're pretty close to even right now in score. Thank you for watching. But you finished at 5,000 to my 3,000, so still fairly tight. No! Thank you. Yay! Finally, some zippage. Okay, I've got to go late on that. Very late on the left upper here. Later. Way later. We need some volcanic activity. All right. Let's try this super, super late on the flipper. Oh, almost. It's getting there. Shit. I have 4,480. I basically did nothing. All right. Let's see if we can get the tarp in. Oh, lucky that was lit. Oh the pups give it and the pups take it Come on Whoa caught me off guard there Stay. Oh, that was too late. Oh no. I took advantage of the wheels. Oh no, let me live. I want tar pit. Getting there, almost. That's a tough shot. I wonder if backhanding it actually is better. I'm going to try that. Let's get to the right flipper here and go for the backhand. Uh, no. That's a cute little post pass, kind of. Getting too cute. Thank you for watching. So you gotta do it instead of backing on the fly. How about this? Oh, are you kidding me? I'm gonna die because of that. I can just feel it. No, I got it! Yes! That's like frickin' jackpot right there. And the three ball multiball would be the super jackpot. Yeah, there we go. That is so funny. Okay, volcano time. Let's go. Oh, that was a little too much. Okay. Need the other flipper. A little light. A little early. No. Alright, it's up to you. Okay. After all that, I'm at 12,000 and Kevin's at 9,000. So we're still tight. So remember, it's this target, no, this target twice. Is it two more times or three more times? We need three more times, don't we? But we really need both. Volcano, yes, I was trying that on the fly. Now, there is one advancement. What ball is this again? Four? Okay. I tickled it. No, you don't. There you go. Now I just need the right mushroom target for the three ball. Oh, you tried to screw me. Come on, don't block it. Yes, I did it. The This is like brain to bun, so that was like an add-a-ball basically. And, oh I thought I was dead there. Here, let's try and stick a ball in the tar pit. Or you can... Or... Or die. I was gonna say, we're gonna try and trap up and tap pass into the shooter lane. There you go, 30,000 to 10,000. I tried to tarp the ball for you. Thousand points for the old lady. Okay, last ball. Player one, this is me. See if we have some ball five magic here. Don't! Alright, Kevin, you need $22,000 Thank you for watching.
