series of operations on Pirates of the Caribbean you guys have you probably own and if played a hell of a lot of games of machines that you've worked on Wizard of Oz The Hobbit dialed-in twit the award winning would be multiple twiba award-winning dialed in they were out in them in the lobby they look really good we'll get a shot of those so thanks man we appreciate you letting us come up here and diving in deep to talk about Pirates of the Caribbean do it thanks man thanks so what we're gonna do we really want to know from you as the lead the lead person on this instead of just like the rules we'll get that some of that from Kiefer and we're going to know the paths your inspiration behind the design of this how you went about thinking okay but I've got Pirates of the Caribbean what the hell do I do with this I want to know about that ship I want to know about this mantle strim ramped so that's kind of what we're we're gonna do if you're if you're up for it yeah so let's start out before we go left or right and all the Macs and stuff just a quick overview of the the the idea behind Pirates of the Caribbean and when the casual player maybe comes up steps up to this big beautiful machine what are they trying to do to it they're trying to progress through the five different movies in the franchise yes sir lots of lots of clips that are there to remind you which characters are in the different chapters are playing through yeah yeah the big wizard modes and multi balls are all about showing you how the movies progressed and what went through it so you're trying to play chapters trying to play multi balls trying to get to those wizard modes and finally break the curse oh man which is gonna come it's gonna be damn near impossible to break their I mean this thing is huge I've gotten to valinor have you really get the t-shirt I always tell people you get the battledore get the t-shirt so you're you're not just a lead designer not just an engineer you're not just an art director Yoo you're good football player too you like playing at tournaments the stuff I do I wish I had more time to play in tournaments it's a lot of fun and I can tell you from knowing here this isn't a guy that shuts off pinball whenever he leaves this place how many you know you have a collection of impoverished intellection have too many because three of my personal games are in the lobby right so let's let's dive into this so you're trying to get through those films some of our favorite films include the Black Pearl we've got Dead Man's Chest at Worlds and etc etc let's talk about all these delicious toys mechanisms layout shot and flow first off that thing but let's go from typical SDTM fashion let's go from left to right the first thing I know let's keep it down here by the the slingshots mm-hmm this we haven't seen a pinball in a while that passed through what's that cold sound like it's a just a and lane now to return lane of these Mouser return lane that work so you're the one that created this damn thing that's all you it's pretty well yeah so what made you what made you think you know what we got to do something different here guys was it a necessity kind of thing or is it just some cool I'm a fan of being rewarded for being out here usually if here if you drained on out Lane you're done right you're not gonna save it with a drain on the in Lane here if you're a good nutter yeah I can save that you bounce okay yeah through the gate there and keep the ball under whoo it's you gotta work for it it's not consistent probably but no there's no one small the lottery ticket you lose something you can rent on if it shoots down you're super high speed you can sometimes save itself all right so you like givin the player more opportunity yes and so what I've noticed about your what your machine here and even some of your past work instead of just being a there it is it's now during its options you've got options here you've got options up here you guess there's always different types of ways to play the game and different outcomes to that I really respect about your design Oklahoma things on a bunch of our games are outweighing saves and Drain saves and things like that before they've been mostly software based I really like the physical yeah it's up to the players skill and being a pinball player to get that ball back in yeah that's the superior engineering him find a physical way yes so do it very cool so as we're moving up here I see molded molded have pieces on a pinball machine which I respect and everybody here respects and loves as well tell us about this area this Devil's Triangle area so there's actually a shot before we to the devil's triangle starting on the left oh yeah this is the first shot on the hook over there that is a makeable shot from the right flipper it is tight it is makeable everyone in this office had made it or laid it out put it down there I said everyone get in here I want to see you make it huh I mean no granted we've got some world-class players here so the depth is it is a far shot over there that's where the subway kicks out okay so there is a five entrance subway it all kicks out over there and one of the reasons I like it all kicking out over there is it feeds the pirate land super so you know if it ever goes into a subway you set up your pirate lanes on your flippers get an empty light over there to roll over and fill it up and there's so many ways this could be clunky but it's so buttery smooth when this thing shoots down here it's in your flipper and you're like oh crap oh crap I do love that what else is responsible for the scoober is I see a special as well special is on the scoop over the Erica when you're playing the different chapters the chapter scoring will be locked in it'll randomly select one of the movies to lock in your chapter scoring before the next ball eating in a ball directly into the deaths okay okay so if you make that shot or if you ricochet that shot that's tough that score will be held over for the next ball perfect very perfect and then the words we're moving over here moving over oh now we got my devil's triangle Oh what are we in doubt a stand up target small and simple stand of targets but one of the things that I dislike okay in a lot of pinball is I make it shot I slightly miss a shot but I hit a post oh no animation no nothing exciting - boink yeah comes back at you you do not hit any posts you know what you're right there's so many shots in this game yeah but you've dumped targets you don't yeah you're building towards something right you're always hitting something the ball is always doing something always going somewhere you're never gonna get a drink this is a joint free zone I skip doing free so now we are into the devil's triangle the devil's triangle the I think Bermuda Triangle may have been copy written in another way they didn't use it it's called The Devil's Triangle sounds more sinister as it does so we've got the sculpted piece here and by Matt from back-alley did a great job the best he's fantastic shooting into the devil's triangle will it come out again you don't know Oh so if you shoot it into here so you qualify movie five chapters it's also how you qualify the movie five multiball shoot it into the spinner enough times and it won't come back out of here normally it's a loop shot that will come back out but if you qualify it enough it won't come back out there's a diverter back there feeds the ball down into the subway and then it kicks out here when you're ready to start your multiball another thing about this game that I focused on is that every major shot can be diverted mm-hmm and stopped yeah I remember you telling me they expelled that and that's one things I was like my eyes really I love not knowing you know not always knowing where the balls grow now once you know the rules you know where the ball is going right but there's Keith and I've talked to many times about this shooting a shot that only goes one place and nothing both of our opinions it's boring it does you know you just keep making the same ramp shot it's always coming right back at you always coming right back at you just still right divert divert door I got diverters everywhere all over this game that can change the ball pass and that allows us to play videos' it allows us to you know stop the ball and hold it somewhere or it it allows the ball to flow yeah the shots flow or they stop so that's that shot yep now as we're so as we're looking at the stand-up target so I'm seeing some multipliers here tell me about those so multipliers that go two three four five and six okay we try to spread them out for the difficulty two and three are pretty easy you hit him forehand or backhand yep four and five a little bit harder a little bit harder to hit those backhand and six is difficult but I still like that it's over there because you have you have your sixth time named your scoop over here and that's a good spoon you can pick them off and they there's a bunch of different times they get used in the cap not only for a play field multiplier that you've qualified but one of the other pirate Alena wars it's a shot multiplier adding to your bonus multiplier there you get use for how many jackpots are available in multiball number two in Dead Man's Chest multiball huh so they're used all the time very cool very cool the Maelstrom am I saying that right Maelstrom and Maelstrom they say in the movie the Maelstrom so the ball it's not just a ramp not just a ramp goes up comes around mm-hmm de morir up here low verts down into the subway mm-hmm and again comes out through the depths so that diverter functions in at World's End multiball okay um when that World's End multiball is lit you shoot it up into here the verts down into the subway this is the jackpot shot super jackpot is our next shot oh I love it man this thing I gotta tell you did did you think of this have you wanted this for a while what I've wanted this for a while so I love the end of the flipper shots absolutely you know in there so sales during Star Trek at home yep Wizard of Oz that's right I just love the ability I'm creating a shot that's right as a player I'm holding a juicer Burt I'm making that shot happen and I put it down under there you know it serves as a nice you know silicone or rubber tonight - oh man when we Gregg and I read Expo and you when you guys revealed this we went up to play it for the first time that right there is what what got us were like okay we're sold this is unbelievable that's it that's a hard shot to shoot this is a super jackpot shot Tia Dalma in the movie she gets all bad started like throwing try to do a giant pile of crabs that's the super jackpot shot right in the Maelstrom and then Tia dama boom back and forth yeah that is one of my favorite shots among many of this game a plus on there that's all thank you all right so as we're going to point Port Royal Port Royal is the next shot left orbit it's used primarily for movie one okay so just yep gotcha so movie there's a unique shot for every movie in the game and they're color-coordinated to correspond to the colors in the game and Port Royal is movie one so you start will be one chapters there you qualify movie one chapters there you start movie one multiball there and there's a couple of characters from Willy one in there as well yeah a nice shot that feeds to the pop uppers mm-hmm or it can be diverted though and you won't know it can be sour you won't you'll know it but if you want to see it so the ball will be stopped uh-huh um by a magnet in the back a magnet back then drops the ball into a subway the subway then rolls up hill oh come back here yes sir and kicks out above yeah is that a secret how you get balls real uphill I mean trade secret trade secret not really little geometry you can figure it out that's still pretty cool it's a cool shot it's a cool little way it works and then it fades out and then well that subway oh oh okay one of them is a five entrance one of them is a one entrance okay enough so we need that one feeds out right thank you play field here so kicks out up here you get to play around up here for a little do you remember now now as we pause there as we talk about skill shot do I remember isn't there a skill shot that you can get it to come there are there are three skill shots okay okay and that will raise your mystery level by one level yeah skill shot into the ship I'm just gonna drop it down into that little subway we talked about kick it up to there it advances your progress on Chris and the Black Pearl mullet level or the multipliable skill shot mmm shoot it around off the flipper here combo kill shot is actually captain's quarters oh right yeah but another one my favorite shots every loop you make uh-huh adds a 1 X multiplier to your skill shots normally 2500 points uh-huh do you have any is there any leeway I mean I've gotten a 12 and a half K really Gill shot cuz I looped it five times that's cool little thing that is very cool okay so the three skill shot which one is the easiest of the skill shots in your opinion definitely a pop the pop upper right because it's a point of no return on the on the wire form is about here let me pull it up too little it's just gonna roll back at you and you get another chance yeah yeah just a little bit off the end okay very cool so as we're going from Port Royal we've got this big beautifully molded chest here the chests molded by mr. Dave link sculptor extraordinaire I like it thank you day so chest is the chest of Davy Jones okay chest of Davy Jones into this shot again is diverted so the ball will normally go through come back and feed your flipper here yeah but when the chest is active after you've hit open chest the chest opens up and you see the force come up out of the bottom on the play field oh yeah those Forks will lock in place yeah lock in place and you shoot the ball and the ball catches the forks flips out lips are right up in there into the chest it's a physical three ball physical ball lock and then you get your ball served three times to start dead man's chest multiball so when dead man's chest multiball starts how do the balls exit the chest here uh-huh kicks open yeah drops the balls and then come out not only they come out they're ready for that yeah I love feeding that flipper do it in many ways you can keep this ball going yes yes this is not like a useless flipper this thing we're gonna be using just as much probably absolutely that is a very useful lots of stuff over here two primary shots three targets now you get from that flipper plus our gold targets over here so send another gold for Torterra from there yep gotta get it and we're gonna talk about that over here because that's a special little time but as we're moving from so we got the stand up targets beside once it's open one says chest right actually we blew past our pirate stand up Oh so after you've completed your pirate lanes whichever reward you've selected from your action button and your screen down here whichever award you selected after you've completed pirate lanes is lit up here okay get it there to cash it in okay that makes me feel better because once I miss this orbit at least I'm collecting if it's already qualified here open your chest stand up targets play into dead man's chest multiball mmm then we have the star map star map is where you start all the different chapters it is where you collect the character Jack and we're it's a fun little area back here that's a little bit obscured by our ship by your prototype ship it's cleanup for our production ships yeah I've narrowed down some of them yes is a prototype so inside this area there are five stand up targets yeah and to ten point switches on rudders area underneath that area is a magnet is a superior post I did see that one Spears disappearing post over here works a couple different ways it can stage the ball so you can hold a ball behind it to feed this flipper but in chapters where it's required for you to hit say Beckett or swan or Angelica up or Blackbeard if you shoot the left orbit that post pops up all hits it Oh rolls back feeds your flipper perfect another way to feed that so the post is actually being used instead of just holding the ball it's using is actively stopping them but deflecting if you will and coming back to feed your flipper here it's saying if that post is going up it's telling you you got there jogging there's a shot they don't miss it absolutely and there's some magic I always feel like when I've been playing this game that the chapter story our story there's there's some magic goes on in there the magnet in there so this post pops up holds the ball in there the ball is going crazy magnets flipping it around can involves firing at it really cool it's randomly selecting whichever chapter you have whichever movie you have oh so if you've got multiple movies up there it's going boom boom boom there's no one is it 2 is a 3 which chapter you're gonna start then it selects then you start playing that movie okay and and like modes and typical games we're calling them chapters it's here so whenever your chapter is eligible is prime that's ready to start you should worry that's shooting to the star man okay we got our map we got our map targets so M AP spells mat yes that's for my toddler at home well the anchor its greatness the map targets there's one letter for each ring our map yep ma P starts these spinning that's pretty smart a variable speed variable directions each ring is independently controlled and so that gets those it gets those spinning yeah when you have all three listen your dad's whirlwind spinners not a little deeper than that one we're gonna see it here in a minute when you've played all three or hit all three stand up targets map ready we'll turn on and you'll shoot into the captains quarters okay which is a subway shot such a cool show I've never seen that shape oh yeah it's not I've not seen that shape of scoop before EDB shot it's like oh man oh yeah it feels so good right off once you hit yep it's right there I find that you're hitting it just as often as you're hitting the loop shot it works well shoot it into there to stop your map and randomly select one of the many many awards give me a one B we can change your opponents character well that's not very nice like lots of different awards available on that okay the next shot is the inner loop oh use the pin ball players favorite shot fountain of birth of the caribou and this loop is forever making and making that shot and making that shot and making that shot you can oh and you can keep scoring a lot of points to a lot of points so you're starting movie for on Stranger Tides multiball mmm by shooting that shot it's five non-consecutive loop shots okay so playing getting it up there five different times we'll start on Stranger Tides multiball a couple of the characters from movie for are on that shot as well yeah let's see what's next I think our gold targets are next now before we move on for the true pinball players out there everybody keeps telling me man Zach that shot is like butter it is smooth it's so fun to repeat everybody likes repeatable loop shots can you talk to a little bit Eric about the importance of you really dialing that in from an engineering standpoint absolutely so there have been upper loop shots done in the past they're done yeah Star Trek started Star Trek at that ramp live shot they're they're hard to get right they are there's a lot of games that don't do it right I now know from experience I spent over a week with nothing more than this flipper mm-hmm this flat rail and this flat rail yeah getting this tuned in okay just those those three elements I was adjusting the positioning of this just in the positioning of those that the strength of this the pitch of that where they're gonna where they line up weird now the important part was where this flat rail fed the ball onto this flat rail you as loop you don't want a lot of chatter back there so that is what the most important part of it and and you know you attain that very well when the first time players pinball pinball good pinball players are playing this and it gets past them and they're like well I didn't I didn't think it was gonna do that that quickly mm-hmm very cool okay I just had to point that I guess I just love that so the gold stand up targets here the gold stand up targets so gold is a rule in the game where you need to collect gold in order to get to Tortuga you got to buy your way into Tortuga know your you know your fancy pirate party make sense Tortuga multiball is started is lit by collecting 50 gold pieces okay ball hits the gold standard targets you get a couple of gold coins thrown up under the screen if you instead combo your way get two three four loops or orbit into a loop or a chest shot into loop loop loop hit the gold targets lots and lots of gold coins or gold nuggets which are worth five or gold bars which are worth ten old figurines of 25 and fancier now 50 so you can it's like to get a chest a goal though it takes probably seven or eight consecutive loops now if you're if you're putting that status on that means it's an attainable shot and it feels really good once you get it but you're gonna have to earn it a little bit and then you splashed your gold you need to hit the button one time for every piece on the screen it will make a sound yes an auditory yes your gold coins like thrown onto a table okay what about one gold coin and one goal kind of ending ding ding ding ding okay now these lights here and here when we cycling yellow when there's gold available oh so the visual is a visual as well they'll start to turn red one the gold is about to disappear if you don't grab your gold those tributes it's not like it alone we ain't no Bank here right just sitting there forever you're a part of it you're gonna grab that come on don't want you no more theme in there isn't okay so when these are flashing yellow it means you got gold you need to grab it like that so so removing from gold we've got another ramp the right ramp for Black Pearl entrance this ramp feeds our upper playfield he calls an upper play field I call it a workable ship it's it's swaying back to the fore to sway back and forth so this play field is on a bearing surface that look I was a to rock back and forth mmm one of the things that I was adamant about in the design was that this play field needs to come off in a trivial manner I grew up as an operator and I grew up working on games I was out in a bar at a Friday night at 10 o'clock when I'm 13 years old yeah fixing games in the dark you can't see what you're doing trying to you know is it an eleven thirty second screw is it a 5/16 so I'm gonna take this ramp off can take that ramp off this upper play field yeah let's show the let's show everybody what this upper play field looks like summer play field is here allow you that it's all nice and bundled there's a bearing surface that comes from the back panel okay and from underneath the playfield come on in here gray underneath the plate litter that hooks in there and there uh-huh and in this bearing surface back there there's a single screw that screws down against the backside of this yeah that makes it so I can move okay can't move back and forth but it allows us to freely slide up and down you pull this up pull the cotter pin the hair pin that's attached to the motor just that it's doable under your electronics but I can figure that out Eric and I see a figure much help it ball so this is a five minutes to uninstall the upper playfield oh the routers of the world and the homeowners will thank you so you can easily get to your flippers we need to rebuild them because you've been playing the hell out of this simple simple yeah neat here since we're talking about the ever play field hmm you can see our cannon yeah the black pearls cannon is aimed at the Dauntless the British yep so when this upper play field is rocking yep don't come a-knockin that's right that's how you were aiming at these shots over here so the ball will shoot through the air at the Dauntless and neither strike it on the side to do one point of damage or right through the sweet spot here into the side of the ship for three points of damage in order to start your multiball number one you think you need to do two points of damage the first time so if you hit in that ship you're starting the first time around I like you yep so in order to qualify that there's a couple things to do up here on the upper play field I'm going to deploy your sails they do look like sails to need to load your cannon and they're still filming either one of these targets will load your cannon alright which point this little cannon door opens up mm-hmm shoot the ball in there and then the ship is rocking rocking rocking that's how you aim slam down there and then you sunk the ship movie one is lit on the left orbit okay shoot it magnet grabs it back here drops left er there and your super jackpot shot while you're in multi more super jackpot up here get it back into the Canon and sink another ship sink another shot and then Wow multi balls go oh of course that's whatever that's what we're chasing we're chasing super jackpots we are play field our bonus X to stand up targets from with bonus X and spotting gold okay now this over here oh yeah it's on purpose Man Overboard playfields rocking if you're not careful it's bouncing it's coming out of here and you got to get your ball back up there against the drone you're gonna fall off the boat which pirates do all the time so they do it is an adjustable difficulty if you want to make it really really hard oh yeah that's one of the things I can appreciate is before we keep going over to the right boat oh yeah it's not like a piece daddy there's no need for it to be it's ten times better it moves there's two switches in that one to detect when it gets hit from the side cuz when you're playing this game the feedback you get when you feel it hit that ship I just love it it looks like you don't even want to touch it but you're going you're hidden oh I love that okay so digging out here alright so the feed so the feed that you're coming up and if you fall out flipper wise you're going safely back to your regular pen is a one-way gate you know cut so the ball will fall back down to your right flipper very cool the other way up onto the ship like we talked about before is there's a subway in the back yeah I know grab the ball can you access that in the back without it being a skill-shot is there anything in the in the game that stops it back and pulls it up so they're still code being developed and do other editing other components it definitely stops there when you started multiball one okay grabs it there and kicks it up here very cool alright so we're moving on down we got some some black dye some liar's dice here now that is ace through the pops through there's a FINA yep through the pop shots into the right orbit whoo right orbit the nine main shots on the playfield it has three characters that feeds all the way through nice clean shot in the PAS pumpers yeah to come around and be stalked by one of several diverse dice which keep okay very good I always loved through the pop sirs and there's an amount of difficulty but getting that satisfaction whenever you can get it especially when in orbit and aim one-two combo in orbit let's talk about our pop bumper okay this is Tortuga all this is torture this is where the Pirates come to play so in Tortuga there are one two three four five there's a sling back there Ling shot buried underneath the ramp here oh there's lots of action going on here yeah and when you're hitting pop bumpers Pirates are spinning your treasure table and spinning mystery is awarded through the pop bumpers okay so you hit pop bumpers to raise the level as a corresponding insert for each one of the pop um person for slingshot and they all raise up the mystery award is granted to you by whatever your lowest level is okay and our little buried rollover yeah laws roll over so what I really like about a popular area huh is having multiple feeds in and multiple feeds get that action right so I don't just want it to drain out one way you know it's coming you know where it's going to be a safe exit every time or you got to worry about the same damn exit it's going rice you guys break it down the middle drill yes so you feel trapped as a player whenever you know it goes in the Pops I don't like it like here comes yeah but this what I also liked out all note is you've got multiple pop bumpers that you that normally you don't have for any game but this feels like less than three because they're spaced so properly and there's a lot of action and if you were to you're good yeah one two three four it was in all those and it comes out all those is it keeps you on your toes when you're in there oh absolutely I like I think you put the extra ball where you did extra balls fun shot so it's like a has a bank element to it mm-hmm so remember how difficult the depth shot was yes this is its mirror also it is the same a very difficult shot geometry there um as it should be it's an extra ball right the extra ball you gotta earn this hmm you need to hit this switch ooh without hitting so again you're going through the pops in two different ways two different shots through the pops I like that oh that's gonna make me feel like a million bucks when I was at Expo um I think it was Josh Sharpe maybe it was that I was hanging out both way and I'm like all right he lit up extra ball through through the pirate lanes I'm like all right man let's see it that's gonna make this shot and he stands he's like damn sharp what about the scoop so we get the mystery scoop that's probably how you start Tortuga oh my gosh I'm picking it up Erik I'm picking em the Gibbs character is on this shot as well that's our boy Gibbs he's talking to us throughout the whole game Ali did all the narration for the game that was an awesome makes me hopeful Melville you know it's Here I am engineer never thought I'd be doing something like that writing a script for this you know blockbuster character Ranchos man right for him to read it and then me to be like mr. Jason McNally let's go yes you put that in your portfolio good SS he though was in I mean what's so cool about it you see he's telling me off Kramer - it's a real cool guy so excited about like a pinball machine I can't wait I can't wait - play can't wait to see this is so cool so does that take a lot of time working with him Gabe was like all out we recorded I don't I don't even know we were there for two and a half hours so wide we didn't think a break and he just kept all and kept going he was heating everything so that we had multiple instances it was just jackpot and he did it impromptu and gave us his own extra feel of it I bet you were cheese I was getting my cohort because we were doing his over sky he was in London okay as he was in a show at the Shakespeare globe at the time and he's right so this recording studio on my day off okay very cool so we have people in here that were so there inlanes inlanes you were trying at Expo to teach me about the inlanes but I'm I don't catch on very quick with these things I saw pretty colors a beautiful layout and a pretty screen and I just wanted to play it poor Eric was like all right Zach you got pay attention to the inlanes the pirate inlays so help me now what tell us about the pirate is so there are six lanes okay you can go through to collect your pirate awards all right you can choose which pirate award you want to play by hitting the action button when there isn't gold on the screen is golden those are gonna collect you're gonna collect up everything they're jebin once the Gold's all gone you get the action button it changes what color the lanes currently are okay there's a corresponding color for each award playfield eggs shot eggs mmm argh frenzy bonus multiplier there are their own colors so you're moving it by the flippers you're changing changing the color are the Jambo once you complete it shoot up you know to cash in your worth I think I'm getting this this is no bad this is good it's that deep but it's welcoming it's very nice and then last but not least I think the last shot I would call it way over here in the right outline yeah you can save yourself save yourself as it drains you give the game a nice nudge sometimes it's generous and gives it to you on its own is rubber here ya eat the apron nudge the game nuts a ball back into the shoe now is this a prototype thing with no rubber or what are we doing here there's a couple different ways so I was playing around with it okay I'm with rubber here it's a lot harder Oh guarantee it's a lot harder I'm gonna be done though oh yeah okay with rubber here it's a lot easier bounce so I'm gonna throw some robbers into the game yeah when they ship and it's up to the up to the owner how they want owner/operator come on there and again what I can very much respect and the pinball community thank you because you don't have to do this you can just make this a regular outline your your ball is gone you want to give again more fun more skill yes to the player and something like that it's so satisfying there's that bounce back in your save your boss save your life and you've gotten I've gotten plenty of times where I had a crazy shot that like you know thousand miles and or straight down the middle he hit the trough here and rolled oh there's a reason I think this is in the prototype word but I believe in the production it'll say escape the locker okay performs Locker so when you get into there you can come back to life alright let's talk about this let's talk about this can you can we show the people what this looks like so this is a spinning disk mechanism that's bird lot it took it one step further I was in my office watching these movies for about two weeks yeah getting inspired on what I wanted to do and I think spinning discs are fun hmm but I wanted to change it up a bit I wanted to have more than one spinning disc and there was this artifact in the movies this map that can take you anywhere off remember right as a magical mystical map called the Malkin map and it had lots of different rotating plates that you line up different words and it tells you how to get to Davy Jones locker yeah or how to find the Fountain of Youth and so I took that and I brought it to dam Moultrie my mechanical engineer and said I don't know how we can do this I think we need to do this so looks like it's complicated but I'm sure it is maybe not you but it's actually a really ok it looks so smooth when it's running so there are three motors hmm one for each disk and we're able to use a relay board and then turn the motors in opposite directions like this not just one way one way stop its runway stop back the other way one might fast slow and then we've got optoelectronics in here that can tell us where the disks actually are mm-hmm so we can line up our different awards yeah oh that's mean that's nasty that's like the killer and pinball if you want to just the stomach yeah brother they're Bowl you plunder their ball and they're like what the hell three so again growing up as an operator I wanted to focus on serviceability and it to make sure this mech doesn't break down yeah if you do need to change something out because we all know that it's pinball yeah things are gonna get wore out they're always gonna get worn out that's right we've been testing the hell out of it yeah okay it's been running for hundreds of thousands of cycles in her shop it's held into the play field with wing nuts okay so what's his wing nuts you can adjust the level you can level it oh that's really where different wing nuts so you can adjust make sure it's flush with the wood here you don't want to bounce underneath right and then if you need to take it out for whatever reason so it's pretty simple even I can do it I like we do it oh that's a beauty there's a beauty I like that again and it seemed like the jersey jack way but instead of having something as cool as a spinning disc in the middle of the play field you said now not enough let's make three now enough let's make it the variable not enough let's make it stop and then there's rewards it's like oh my gosh that's terrific so what we're gonna do now can you tell us a little bit about the screen apron because I don't see this very often yes has this ever been done thanks there's some mods out there but this isn't mine that duplicated I think our Wizard of Oz screen and put it on me that's right yeah so this screen tells us a whole bunch of things yeah it does not just the pirate awards but its main focus is during gameplay it shows Jack Sparrow's magical compass yeah which we like in the film and it's a cool party and in the film Jack's compass always points to his heart's desire mm-hmm so this will point to the player's heart's desire it'll always be pointing at the most valuable shot currently available in the game yeah now the code that we're going through to make that happen is pretty deep our character it will statistically pick out for the games what it thinks is most valuable well we wanted movie three are both laid at the same time for multiball mm-hmm it will tell you which one statistically is referral points or if there's an extra ball that's waited to be XYZ so there's lots and lots of rules in something that is down here a little bit out of the way then maybe you have to pay attention to maybe you don't necessarily have to pay attention to it but it's whether or not you you're wondering utilize right it's something we wanted to put in there because we understand our games are very deep mm-hmm this is kind of like myself or Keith P. Johnson or Joe Katz standing behind your shoulder saying hey if it's not blatant enough damage it shook the thing shoot the ring me I like that because casual casual players that like pinball they can come up and this might overwhelm some people at first because it's so beautiful and there's so much to do and you say no worries guys just look at the arrows right in the right direction if you're if you're one did you shoot around have fun great if you trap up a bowl and you wanted to know where to shoot next it'll tell you right where to go I do like that I do like that now what we're gonna do I think we're gonna go into without going into every player will let Kiefer go into every little player can you tell us if we start again can we see it different what's on the screen cuz oh yeah perfect so there's 22 characters right yes each character has their own unique power okay which we've balanced so we wanted tournament players right really want to have bets of rules different ways to play the game different scoring opportunities so characters all have different abilities okay and if you're playing a multiplayer game nobody can play that's right no longer does somebody get shoved in the plane first exactly you know you might want to play for somebody you know you want to be Blackbeard and get your 10 second extra ball saver and multi balls and someone else first maybe okay yeah yeah and one of the last things we really could touch on a some gameplay stuff here in a minute but tell us quickly about the art tell about their art direction because it draws me and I think the the color saturation here you see greens Purple's blues I'd love the feeling it's almost like a painting if you will very much I love it so artists been in gaming for many years yeah his name is Jay szalinski okay we were given a style guide from Disney they said stick to the style guide the first typical try not Disney very outside of this to which we replied a step back yeah we know pinball yeah will protect your assets we want to do what serves best for everybody so and they've got of a proven anyway right hands a day so yes listen they show you what we got let us show you what we get okay so we went through Jay went through and hand-painted every single one of these kids oh wow and painted their backgrounds and blended them together and then we had to get sign-off every actor oh that we featured in this yes and there's a lot of men hairs 22 of them in here a lot of them in here and he did such a great job that every actor said yes that's a great representation of each one of these people so we got to do hand-drawn art dude with all these actors and and Greg about when we're reviewing we're gonna show you guys the cabinet or as well as - it's the cabinet or it's gorgeous as well so we'll show you guys that here in a bit okay all right Eric so however I play The Hobbit Rangers jag game I love the big display first off but what I love about it is if you trip up and you look up here you can really it is a map you can see everything that you're supposed to be doing it's all displayed up here I love that can you tell us a little bit about the display on this game and why there is a map so JP doin drew this map yeah he does good work it is very good so across the top here are your different movie chapters okay you qualify and we'll each chapter know you see a gun board open chapters qualified so that's movie one star a star map in order to start the new world okay other shots right now if I shoot into this chapter start I'll have a 1 point 5 multiplied and you've got options in that store map - yes I do oh I like it so how across the top here are our movie chapters in the corners are our treasures I see where they're supposed to be plated fills in what thing and so if you make combo shots so there's many different unique two-shot combos in the game we collect them all so these are your combo items yes people are gonna love trying to one for you each unique combo shot in the game okay okay the main map down here that you're looking at is your progress toward the different multi balls okay now when I first looked at it I'm just seeing the map what am I saying look at what you're looking at is your progress along the map so for example movie number one curse of the Black Pearl is showing your progress as I advance down the map and see my progress here I need to sink the ship and now we see some more peaceful animations by JP is the curse of the Black Pearl multiball hit the ship hold for super jackpot so it tells you exactly what you need to do right this okay alright and now every one of the movies has its own multiball that's qualified in new and unique ways okay okay so movie two is all about you hit the chest so what area was this over your Black Pearl that was a black flight or obi-wan okay this is movie number 2 that means chase so you shoot it you hit open chest but this is just make sure the ball into the chest rid of the center release that because I'm already in another moment that's right yes no that's gonna physically ball lock yep very cool movie three you open the chest log ball to open the chest 9 please follow your map movie 3 is all about collecting nine Pieces of Eight there's a big red arrow on each of the nine main shots up in that little arrow or in that big arrow is one of the pieces of eight oh yeah I remember from the movie there's a like a hat that they throw a bunch of junk in pieces of whatever we happen to have in our pockets at the time is the quote one shot for each of those pieces of eight collect all of them shoot it up the ramp in order to start movie for will be five you progressed by shooting on around this is so helpful this is this is key okay so again this is non-consecutive shot so I've got a combo going it won't count as progress I've got five different different sets and then finally you enter the devil's triangle became this spinner you're progressing your a do you get a really good hit like I just did you see it progressed three times whoo spinners go like butter that's what like that Hobbit - it's the spinner means something they're progressing so just in points and I can see your progress you're ready to go the item at the end of the map is lit up and animated this is the animated map it's animated okay so this is this is key for you guys that are listening this is everything you need film one two three four and five if you guys ever get confused it's oh wait I tell people have the Hobbit it's always right here just take a breath take a second acquaint yourself with this and you'll never forget right I love yourself getting combo mm-hmm and I'm hitting the treasure gold pieces everywhere they're good we're gonna see your gold count down here the gold pile fills up higher and higher and higher there's a legend once it fills up once you get fifty gold you're ready to start Tortuga multiple you're multipliers are shown in the bottom left hand corner it always shows what is most important to you no default on your bonus acts if you got a play feel multiply you're running it'll show around here you'll have a timer right next to it you have you shot X it'll show that if you have a shot X panoply if you multiply and it'll show what the resultant value would be so if you've got a 5x play field and a 3x shot multiplier it'll show next shot 15s perfect so this is your go-to if you're witty Fremont seeing what you're doing and it shows where the but how many balls you have to go there kicking the balls aren't thing or what oh yeah it's awesome okay about that last thing what are these scores right up here below each of the other different movie shots okay those scores are what you will earn if you start that chapter and that's what each chapter shot is worth so they did you learn so when you start a chapter yeah oh it started moving number two now but because I am Totten it automatically gave me one of the chapters for a pretty saw gourd for that all right so now if I shoot another character I'll get 1250 kind of 2.5 x any point five x come in because i had four different movies qualified good do I shoot games for example I had mystery as well points as you can see I got and the shot is actually increasing in value with every character elect okay so once I finish this mode and every character you hit collect some gold for you so be on your toes you're getting more cool coins by doing this it's lucrative to play well in chapters because your chapter shots keep getting more and more valuable how's it up twenty-one hundred times two point five over so Marty there just gave me seven thousand point oh and if I hit right ramp chapter completed seventy five hundred points total of 47 and I beaten that chapter let's go no if I start another movie to chapter then the skull scholar poll shows that it's qualify though it's gonna start off with chapter value being worth thirty to fifty I do I can lock that value in maybe it'll randomly select one value of the lock in twenty five so it helps you can see and if I shoot identity at the home everything by two ten fifty points and is awarded me the highest value I had it was thirty two fifty that's the benefit of having this was a 27-inch this monitor is you can't fit this in a smaller right you can't fit this much information so for whatever people say about the the preference of the size of screen it is a necessity if you truly want to see without flipping through the main look up see everything you want senior in your game all at once alright thank you thank you because how bad do you want one I want one real bad before we leave you we've got to go talk to Kieffer now to talk about the rule set we just have started guys but before we go to Kieffer I want to thank you man I can't express how unbelievable of it this is no [ __ ] you killed it dude you killed it this didn't have to be like this you chose to put blood sweat tears thing if we really went through every mode or every chapter every rule set everything in this whole game would be here for a while you love to have deep rule sets don't you what is it about the structure of your rules that you like to make them deep do you like to make him feel like a journey what is the key for rule set so it all really started back on Simpsons pinball party Oh everybody loves that and I just wanted to make a game that I wouldn't get tired of people it was right trying to defeat that game well right I mean so you know I started off you know playing games in arcades and stuff like that you know and family Twilight Zone at some point you just you play the game like four times on the same game no no it's so I just wanted a it wasn't necessarily to make people you know work more or whatever but I wanted the way Simpsons was laid out was that on most games a good player should be able to get to one of the final notes okay on a really good game say wait a minute on a really good game they should be able to get to all the final modes okay you know the game of a lifetime when everything comes together they've won all the modes and they get to the thing at the end wow that sound people are talking about playing hour hour and a half long games on Simpsons try and get the end I did it on a New Year's Eve party at my house once just playing you know a friend and I got to the final mode in under half an hour why because I did everything I was you know just planned it was like I finish the evasion finish freak with mysteries but I have a hard enough time just getting two alien invasion I love it every time I get to but then I was like I can't control all this stuff so that's cool so you approach it in that manner do you approach it with you don't want to get tired of one of your games or not I mean did you know it's gonna sound you know kind of ego wish I guess but I know I'm a I'm a games that I want to play and hopefully it's more usually it jives with what other people want to play okay you're never gonna please everyone no please yourself I guess you know people get it people don't I mean be the only regret I have is that it often takes people a long time to warm up to my games or to okay fully get them or fully understand them I would argue like there's that you're hard on yourself I guess yeah I guess but you know like there's a lot of stuff in here mm-hmm I I don't really think that take it individual each thing is like really hard I like Keith P. Johnson games cuz when I come up to them I can play them for months in my home collection and then I play them again and I'm like oh I didn't like where'd that come from I wasn't I've never opened that up alright this we always try to do which I say wouldn't it be cool if the game did this you know and we try to plan it for that it's like you don't know about it because you don't even know the whole rule yet yeah right but uh like in Simpsons again you see shoot the little target up there and you get more time or your thing yeah then by accident you know you're shooting the left Rafi you shoot the target directly and instead it adds more time and scores more points that's true and then you shoot it off the left orbit again mr. rappin he hit the target it adds like ten seconds you're like wow that was really great I'm glad they thought of it we try to think of everything so that when you get to it mm-hmm um you you're like ah that felt good because the game recognized that I did something cool and it's rapportive and you get rewarded for it and it's a spectacle it's always a spectacle too it's not just hey you've defeated a good job like you feel like when you're in a wizard mode wizard mode on and keep Johnson game it's like oh here we go like this is at least that's how I feel whenever I get to some of the mini wizard modes in Hobbit or something like oh here we go and I've got that I feel like I'm in the film so so kudos to that so I'm so excited about this you guys I'm stoked beyond my wildest dreams to be here to go over this with the man himself but you guys know me I'm not the most the greatest pinball player and chief Johnson games can scare me at first because there's so much to do so for the sake of everybody watching this you're gonna have to help me out we're gonna have to slow it down for me we want to know first off just what's the composition of this what are we trying to do are there chapters or their films what is the basic premise of this code sighs so over the franchise there are five films correct yes fees and so we have general inserts for the five films Junior Black Pearl curse of the Black Pearl Dead Man's Chest at World's End on Stranger Tides and devon tell no tales okay so each of those movies has one shot associated with it primarily okay so that's that's simple I like that so all right so over here the yellow shot is general the black pearl the black curse of the Black Pearl okay the green chest shot is dead man's chest okay ramp over here with a whirlpool Maelstrom is out of World's End the figures into the end of the third a fourth movie is the inner loop up here there could label Fountain of Youth which that movie is about and then the fifth movie is a devil's triangle which we have built up over here the skull puddle of it and just kind of goes up into the nothingness you can't really see what's going on kind of mysterious yeah that's right I like that as we stop right there five films five main shots to progress right and then I know that it's very simplified but I can I can work with that okay so each movie has about 21 chapters associated with it that are possible right okay so and they're all directly scenes from the movie you know they have a little intro you know from the movie as to what chapter it is and then the primary characters that appear in that chapter are the shots that you have to shoot around the playfield okay which are indicated by by these like these normal arrows like all the characters are the slicing beckett angelica okay right have jack up the middle here Davy Jones bootstrap bill will turner and toe scrum Righetti Elizabeth and Barbosa over here perfect so there's 22 of those arrows scattered around the playfield mhm the and you know more or less associated with the movie that they're most associated with when we can that's part I like that so at the start of the game the game picks five chapters from each of those pools of about 21 so there's five chapters four movie one five chapters four movie chooses and that's a randomized yeah exactly okay so so out of the 21 for each it picks you 5 4 inch yes and it's kind of in a bank here and it's like this is what we'll present if they can get to these yes that's right perfect okay so that's where the the big old number that Manor was talking about when it comes to 0.25 sextillion there are three nations that is it so that's where that comes from at five out of twenty one times five out of twenty want you know it adds up quick okay so how many how many chapters are there in summation I guess a little Oh 125 125 The Hobbit wasn't enough for you it was 37 yeah you wanted again - yeah we did him a little different in this game so you know since since they're all driven by characters as a result of how we made add to make the game hmm we just decided to you know put the characters out there and and hopefully it's easy to understand that you know you see those characters you know what shots you have to make that's right you know a mode is just making shots on the play field at all sometimes they're done a little differently or whatever so it's still shots on the play field but you know there's we've made up for it by by there being a lot of them okay now let's say I'm playing this and I want to start a mode on Black Pearl mm-hmm all right start a started chapter because we've got possible 20 chapters but it's gonna give me five I want to start one of those chapters Black Pearl does that mean I'm going right there yes you shoot the shot associated with that movie which in this case is the left war but yeah and so that's skull which is flashing will turn solid okay and it will light up up here in the starmap area yeah yeah you can see there's five different inserts up there I do yeah so if you were to shoot that shot and then shoot it into the chapter area you would start a curse of the Black Pearl chapter okay so if you want to start a chapter that's your spot that's the spot yeah Chad once you enable it you're starting it there perfect I love them okay so then I I'm trying to get through how do I get a multiball in black pearl so each of the multi balls for the movies are a little bit more very okay so it's not just shooting the shot first of the black pearl for example is done by going up to the Black Pearl and making shots at the ship over here I love that and so what do you do enough damage to the ship that multiball would be lit again on the left orbit which is the shot associated with what happens if you do damage by actually hitting it into there what do what kind of damage does that do - so the north so the cannon which is up here can either hit the ship right like that or it can go in the hole so what if you hit the ship one damage unit goes down and if it goes into the hole three damage units are done oh nice it's a three to one kind of thing right so so obviously the goal is to try and hit it in there the if the first multiball by default requires two damage units hmm so if you hit the ship you're gonna have to take another shot at it but if you get in the hole you light it right away and it goes up by one each time after that so the first two multi balls you could light it with just one shot by getting it directly to hell but if you're multiball three then at that point you will have to make a minimum of two shots because the first one will do three out of four damage and then you're not gonna have it again yeah that's really cool so that's that's the basic layout of what is the player trying to do so the ultimate goal of the game I guess is more or less complete all these inserts Wow five wizard modes right there some to learn my big was right there's a wizard mode for each movie - okay that you have to play the movies five chapters mm-hmm and you have to play it's a multiball okay and then when chill out of it after the sorry to interrupt you after that fifth chapter does it enable multiball you just it opens it up no no so it's two different things right there's a multiball for each movie what you just talked about that's right so you have to now admittedly it's not likely yes you're gonna play through five chapters and having not have started the multi panca but the requirement is that you play the multiball and you play off I like that because it's not part it's not directly tied to it you can do your multiball and your chapters it's another layer of the game if you will mmm I love that so ultimately to get to that ultimate wizard mode you got to get through all five multi balls and all five films right and then so for example for this one what you do these and you're not in a multiball you're not in a chapter then again the shot will light up okay and you can start curse of the Black Pearl wizard mode okay and that particular wizard mode just as an example is you have to collect all the 882 gold pieces that I know they they took from the chest you're like you're you're in the Black Pearl you're going around the different places and collecting them again yeah and now the interesting thing about that is the score of the wizard mode is directly correlated to how well you do in these two things right so therefore the approximate formula is the number of characters you've collected from all five of the chapters you played for that movie mm-hmm times the number of super jackpots you've made in that multi balls yeah so if you take the time to hit the shots and not try to write if you just blow through the chapters and and just start the multiball and don't make it as its court if you're not gonna score any points at all okay that's probably I'll do initially play the chapters you please get a multiball get some supers up there so so yeah the goal is to play the chapter as well go play the multiball well score big in the wizard mode so if you after you've played you don't have to win you just have to play all five of those wizard modes then you will get to the final mode do we have a name for yeah we do leave it's not break the curse yeah so the very end of the last movie is you know they've got a they got a blow-up to try - oh man that'll be your goal where I thought right there yeah uh-huh okay tell me about the colors I see different colors I see purple blue red green gold does that have anything to do with the code well it doesn't as much that we tried to pick a color for each movie mm-hmm and everything associated with that movie we try to keep it to that color okay so that's your play right if you're playing a movie one chapter then the little banner up there is gonna be yellow okay you know the arrows for the characters will be lit up yellow you know so just gonna try hammer home that yellow means curse of the Black Pearl yeah we did that cause yellow is like the gold for you know that's primarily associated with that movie you know what I love about this I gotta stop our tutorial sorry guys I love that this feels like five different fully functioning loaded ass pinball machine it does like the coats feel like five full game like you're not just getting one game for the price you're getting five different pinball machines but they're all in one I love that has anybody talked about it being that way I mean really wait a min all you can focus on that if you want to the whole time well exactly and there probably be you know I would you first start playing the game I'm probably gonna try and concentrate on one movie at times notice yeah I love that and then maybe one day I come up and I'm like you know what that's not easier than others - right because getting this shot is not the easiest shot but you have to make that shot in order to qualify the chapters for that movie oh man the depth here I love it I love it alright so what else do we need to know about cuz so you eased up on me I appreciate you being it's slower for me let's start getting into the other components of this rule set alright but we can talk about the other movie multi balls but the chapters are okay similar gotcha um open chest you know just beside the chest stand up towards yep the you know walk three balls and start Dead Man's Chest multiball okay for movie three so real quick yeah I hit each of these once wow it's gonna qualify a line you know I get very by very multi because that's not to go to but yeah I basically hit those at either one or hit both of them or hit each one twice and whatever the difficulty is doctor doping the chest and then walk three ball log three balls is gonna start which multi Bowl that was dead man's chest that man's chest since again so it's just and you know green down here dead man's chest very simple okay so I'm saying this yeah so a movie three at worlds end.the red shots red skull this one you have to collect the nine pieces of eight that feature in that movie so we have nine shots on the play field all of the major arrows mhm so you kind of think of Fellowship of the Ring right you had to make each other okay make each shot once and then this shot is qualified for everyone's in multiball and there's plenty of stacking opportunities with this right every multiball can be stacked oh wow chapters can run during multiball you can start chapters before multiball during multiball yeah no it's it's all it's it's back to its back to the simpsons era where you know everything everything is available have at it yeah if you want it if you want to load them up load them all up it's like the Beautiful Mind where you see all these pictures and you you can really pinpoint everything really going on at once exactly okay so that's the Maelstrom right so the the fourth movie on Stranger Tides is primarily shooting loops up here did you guys do it good I watched the stream and you guys are just killing like the shadow or something and I'm like how are they doing that you just get used to so it feels good I mean it's smooth you know this smooth so that whatever probably talked about it but there's you know you spent a lot of I'm you know working in that shot to get it right yeah he told me he really did he really dialed that one in really well okay so I what are you hitting you're hitting so many Luke so many in a row what what's the so the Technic well again it depends on difficulty so easy it's like a standard default the standard default will be you shoot the loop and the first loop in a sequence mmm counts towards advancing that multiball perfect so you shoot like five loops only the first one counts okay and then so I think it's four different first shots and that multiball will be lit and then you shoot the shot again and it's right it's doable and then movie five is mostly just shooting the spinner down here and and making a loop shot and then shoot the spinner enough you get to Devil's Triangle and then that will be lit but she said that shot it's kind of tough it's pretty tough I mean you know the the number of spinners starts off pretty low at the beginning so people have a shot at it okay all right now what I'm looking a little em'ly looking right down here it says Manfredi mmm what don't even know about that all right so the map refers to the three map targets up here oh that's that's one of my favorite little shots on this game I love that hole yeah so you hit em AP the map is referring to the spinning disk area each each letter is associated with one of the disks and so you have one of the letters and that disk will start spinning randomly oh I don't know which direction or which speed yeah when map is completed then they'll all three be spinning and you shoot the map hole and the map will stop at some award you know little locking like extra ball or something like that so basically you'll read the thing down the line and that'll be what your award is this is the pinball mystery award on steroids yeah I mean you could see all the possible wards right there yeah but the combination is almost endless I mean there's a lot a lot of things we can do there right so the light stuff of ward stuff and stuff the more important thing is is the ability to under the plunders a pirate term yes it is plunder so if you're in a multiplayer game you can plunder other people's stuff this isn't stealing it yes oh you can take their points you can take their gold you can take the treasures and you can take their balls nice that's the four possible things that can be plundered that's all you can set it you know in the adjustments right anywhere from you know snowflake [ __ ] year bedlam that's right you know how aggressive the plundering will be snowflake but yeah if you want a really entertaining game you know you set it to bedlam and people are just so this is very digestible I like this what else do I need to know when it comes to this codec is already I already feel comfortable now with you explaining it knowing kind of what I'm shooting for looking for the certain colors I'm looking for both multiball and the chapters so I like that anything else that gets a little bit deeper that I need to know or maybe not me but the viewer here well the primary things you need to know probably about the pirate lanes oh you know what here's between us so whenever I went to Expo Eric Meunier was he was talking about the damn pirate lanes the whole time and I was so overwhelmed and overjoyed by seeing this thing I kind of zoned out and spaced them out so help me out on these pirate inlanes because he was he was focusing on those I know that tire lanes have a lot of different stuff they can award you okay it can be normal stuff like points you know or it can be you know line of gold or you know like play field multipliers assigned on the buyers is this random no you could change it anytime you want by hitting the action button okay almost any time if you have gold which we have talked about gold much yet but if you have gold then the action button picks up the okay right and you'll hear it right yes exactly you'll hear um but after the goal it's gone then any time you push the button it'll advance the award down here so gosh so you hit the button it'll say like shot X in the button again they'll say a gold hit the button again they'll say big points mm-hmm so whatever it's on when you complete the lanes then that color will be locked in at this target up here the pirate target yeah and then when you hit that you collect the thing that you lit from the pirate lens there's opportunities later on once you start getting that down right where you can you can have something up there and then Prime the pirate lanes again to be almost complete you complete the lanes while that thing is still lit they can stop on the old award but it's like like five lanes then cashing the one that you look before and let the six lane and then cash it in that you can combine the two things what are some of the most lucrative things you can get through those in Lane Awards there's the play field multiplier oh yeah like one that's wrong the show how do they go play field multiplier so then we have these targets these stand-up targets down here I see a 4 X 2 a 2 X 3 X 4 X 5 X 6 X ok so then you didn't want to go with the 120 X you probably get close to that okay ah if you're stacking different things exactly you can you can relatively easily get a 108 X chapter shot oh yeah I like that but I see players like me don't I'm not good so I can't focus on that but the game doesn't rely just on that I don't feel left out if I'm right but there's a lot of there's a lot for tournament oh yeah right you can build up some big stack and there you know I'm chasing wizard low but this thing in a tournament is gonna hold its own because of all the different multipliers all different strategies that you can have right that's really cool the current record is one shot was two hundred and two thousand points whoa what was so 5 X 5 X play field multiplier with a 6x shot multiplier during the chapter that had like a true to half multiplied which you then shot the ramp and the 200 mm for that one who was it who shot did you know when you shot at two years like I knew it was really decent but I was not I was not prepared for how decent it was that's good that's good alright so and and the lane Awards you know there's even depth to that because the more you do something the more it'll be worth right so the first time you get the first time you choose collect cold moon from the lanes and hit this target the first time it's like 20 gold okay but they do it again and it's 30 gold and then 40 so kids going up the more times you get that award the first time you take shot X you know the playfield are the Super X which is that play field multiplier only the qu x target is lit ok and then the next time you like Super X then you have the 2 and the 3 excellent that's whichever one you hit first but the 3 is not even available until the second time you do it ok and then so you have to do it 5 times before you have a shot at the 6 X multiplier how will the player know how long that is eligible well it's eligible on the rest of the you know forever basically ok until you hit one of the targets but then once you hit that target then then you have about 30 seconds there's a pole sir yeah and plus there there'll be a timer over here that does what how much time you have left okay I like that all right what else do we need to know there's also Ward's that aren't available at first I can come in later when I want to earn them basically sort of so like light extra ball happens after you've gotten five pirate Awards is going up in there in the home environment like me I like those like they're one of our favorite modes at the moment is what we call our frenzy Oh so as you might imagine is every time you hit a switch someone says are Oh it's me or Eric you know one of one of us is sadar or the different tone different yeah yeah so so if you're in a multiball you're spinner you're getting that shows up after you've completed the lanes three times but I can't wait to get to them so and then during certain events like if you're in a multiball then add a ball is now available in the lanes that's nice if you have a timer running from a mode or from a play field multiplier then more time is added to the links so there's a lot of stuff that this thing can do and it changes as the game goes on context-sensitive and that kind of thing there's there's kind of an astounding amount of death just put the inlet easily sweep the lanes would hit that and I get something I divide the amount of you know thought and everything else that's in there it was pretty significant it's nicer our viewers can go back and kind of just digest this over and over and learn just little parts of this as they're going on location to play or in a tournament or hopefully in your home okay what else do we need to know caper the X targets they're used for lots do everything we already talked about the play field multipliers right shot multiplier I will say if you get shot multiplier they all light at once okay whichever one you hit they're also used for bonus X which you can light again from the bottom lanes or with these two targets up here mm-hmm the next bonus X will light up and they're also used for this multiball to indicate the number of jackpots you're gonna have to shoot so these targets are used for about four different multipliers basically perfect um what are we doing up here alright so as you talked about earlier this is how you start curse of the black for a multi balls so when you get up here the first thing you're doing is shooting the spinner - spinner as they they'll close in on the ship you're attacking okay and then once you're close enough you can hit the load the cannon door to the cannon opens up and then shoot it in the cannon and that's not a fire so and if you don't blow it up you'd have to do all that stuff over again I'll go back to load cannon Oh and then go back so do you have to hit it so many times then yeah the first one it's like fifty spinners but you know these spinners oh they're still go what spot right it's impossible to get the fifty spins and one good shot around both of them because you know that bill started oh yeah nothing up here like bonus X as I just mentioned mm-hmm and the other thing you can do up here is spot cold so these targets spot these targets down here okay and gold things out exactly to get there so anytime you hit these targets gold will spawn on the screen and you have to hit the button to collect pick up each piece so they could be worth one or five or ten like these different denominations depending on how much gold you've spawned okay give you spawn 50 gold in there probably like a twenty five ten to five and a bunch of one so these targets will advance the gold letters here which what happens is when you've completed gold mm-hmm then the next time you hit these targets it's it's basically double the amount of gold you would have gotten good you know it doesn't necessarily but the way these targets work is every combo you make before you hit these targets increases a pretty fair amount the amount of gold that you can get so if you shoot chest loop to loop to loop and then hit these and you have like a four combo going to the targets and you know probably spawn like 1215 gold something like oh yeah so builds up real quick that way so exactly shoot like ten loops in a row and then hit this then you've probably got you know forty gold out there or something so it encourages you to keep going keep rising now if you get those ten loops before you hit the completed gold bank and you're getting dozens and dozens of pieces of ones but you still have to fight by slamming to collect it again and so the record by the way about 400 somewhere yes pondered once Joe did Wow coming shot what consecutive shot would it take how many Canseco think it was I think it was a double 13 or 14 loop combo or something like that there's a really risk of word because if you if you make those combos and make those combos you've got a huge potential of gold buildup but if you if you with the shot or you know you hit something else and it comes down here mm-hmm you're not gonna hit those targets sure all this gold so at some point after you've made seven or eight loops you're thinking should i do i well open or should I just try and aim later and hit the targets like that's where the legs are Ward is that people love so much in this game is filled with that risk reward there's so many different strategies the because we haven't even talked about the multiple chapters yet right so let's talk about those okay if you have so we have the five shots right you can enable more than one chapter at once you know more than one movie at once yep so if you see the left orbit then all those stand-ups are yellow all right if I shoot the chest now then three of those targets turn green and the other two stay yellow ooh so now we have two potential chapters you started but that's right you don't know which one you're gonna get okay so if you're if you're playing to a wizard mode you probably want to concentrate on just like you wanted starting it mm-hmm but if you like more of them up then your chapter multiplier goes up so if you like two of them at once then there's two different colors up there whichever is the last target you hit is the one that you get it was a magnet over there that kind of randomizes it yeah I love the action that ball gets up there that's cool the so whichever one you get and if you've lit two chapters the chapter whichever one it is will score one point five x two points okay if you like three of them then it scores double for two point five x and if all five of our lives in your chapter scoring triple points okay but again it's a risk of war because you don't know which one you're gonna get mm-hmm and the each of the shots the skulls has what we call a skull value associated with it so each of those skulls I was wondering about that yeah they start off with a thousand at the start of a ball whoever started a game every time you make the shot you'll score score the skull value and it'll increase it depending on what shot it is so you shoot the chest skull value goes up by 50 shoots left orbit and it's at each each one is different so the green skull goes up by 50 the yellow skull goes up by 75 this one goes up by 100 this one is dependent on the spinner so how well you shoot the spinner is how much that goes I love them spin and then and then the inner loop goes up by 25 it's the ease a little beatable shot but it doesn't go up by as much because you can just keep looping the thing well but the value of the skull shot is also the value of those characters you collect during a chapter so this thing starts off a thousand good builders or 8075 you know 150 mhm when I finally start a movie one chapter then whatever this value is built up to is what the value is of all the shots in the chapter so code now during the chapter those you'll you'll the first shot you make will score the skull value it'll also increase that value depending on what shot you made so like I think this orbit increases the skull value by 100 when you get will or Pinto mm-hmm this one's probably you know 150 or something like that so when you finish a chapter you know it's going up and op the more character you shoot and then that value is left for the skull the back of the game so now if you say you built up the thing by five two more points never seen the shot for you know 1600 points a shot right so each of the shots basically has their own little jackpot that you fill up do the ball and you can hold those values by skillfully shooting the scoop over there so yeah it's a tight shot but if you go rightfully so most of it it'll hold one of the skull value shoot Tia dama under the flipper she will add 250 to every skull and score the most valuable skull that you have whatever that is yeah so that's what the children 2000 came off right so it's about that's somewhere to 2.7 thousand times 2.5 for the mode multiplier for chapters times 5 times 6 how well cos you're doing math in school yeah you know I was great math Oh College I can't believe you're so well in that yeah what else I I know we could we go like I said we can stay here forever what else does the player need to know when it comes to examine the history Awards real quick I guess yeah we have mystery lit Tortuga I guess I should say to the gold builds up to Georgia Dome of the ball I got 50 gold Tortuga multiball bytes here it's you know it could be played with all the other multi balls yeah the goal is important you got to get through that multi Bowl the mystery there's 10 mystery levels in the game okay designated by different colors so each time you hit a bumper or the slingshot The Associated rum bottle you know goes up by one power so the lowest the lowest bumper level you have is the level of the mystery ward okay so what color is it the lowest one is like pink pink but if you hit each one ten times then it's white so see your white mystery ward you know it's not getting any better maybe shooter you'll get a level ten mystery Ward which generally be better should be good then the level one mystery watched her points exact so so this one it spots the lowest level bumper for you okay so whichever I mean it's usually this one it's kind of out of the way compared to the others not always but uh most often this one's the hardest to hit so whichever bumper is the lowest it'll advance at one level very good that's a is that a high-traffic area too so your goes it in there in and out of there pretty fair amount or it can come down here pop and then go back up in here absolutely can long time ago yeah and we also have you know chew through the bumper shots you know through there and then the shot I mean there's there's shots all night long in this game okay yeah yeah that's we need that for extra balls and stuff or no um can you can you program at extra Bowl I always like my suppose yeah you can always do that I like that what do we need to know rules was so anything else here before we start up this game and you show us the different character stuff primary you got you got most of it that'll keep people chewing for years that's good stuff good stuff all right so we're gonna go to the gameplay now guys we're gonna show you guys the different characters and that's gonna it's hold a whole nother story of depth here on Pirates of the Caribbean by Jersey Jack pinball alright so when you start a game here's the character select screen that's a lot of people it's a lot of people we started off with having five or six just the main characters in the game and then that was before we went to the the 22 characters on the playfield chapter based concept yeah we did that it was like oh we've got you know so we started adding more people as like well we've got 22 people again we might as well just give each one of them a thing to do so that's what we did how long did it take to think of 22 different things the first you know the first six were immediate yeah right and then I kind of you know at the end it got to be more of a stretched you know what can we do here then we came up with a bunch of them and then it was like well you're only gonna ever pick these guys right so we had to start bouncing them out with different attributes so you only tell people about the positives some of these guys have negatives as well and we'll talk about those so we'll just go through him in order so we have the character here armando Salazar I've been calling him Greg he just kind of dark resemblance to MonaVie you're the plot justification quote for his power okay like we try to make the power relatable to the character right more integration you know so so you know dead men tell no tales I always leave one to tell the tale so the natural thing there was if you're in a multiball and you have two or more balls draining at once at the end of the multiball and you'll leave one alive to tell the tale so you'll get a ball back if you drain your last balls all at once and multiball that's pretty beneficial it's very beneficial now it doesn't happen very often uh-huh you know you have to be a in a multiball and then be they have to all drain at once but it's basically an extra ball most though rewarded for if you get cheesed off by that situation become you know all the time uh Elizabeth Swann you know takes to be rather exciting to me to pirate it so basically with her a chapter is always lit so you start you know normally have to shoot one of the skull shots mhm with her at least one chapter always be lit there you can add more like you always can but one of them will always be lit as soon as you're out of mode you can shoot her right back up there again and start another one okay you know it'll choose randomly so that it's not just the initial chapters always lit or something like that for the whole game chapters always lit that is a good benefit especially a player like me that likes to focus on the journey and the tail if you were right I make it easy to go through it but again she'll pick random I say don't know which one you're gonna get the children you'll get through him okay will Turner you know he practices with the swords you know the only thing I could think of to associate with him is is giving you more time like he's good at you know doing sword combos you have that right so we every combo in the game whether it's a gold combo or the treasure combo the more time to make those shots amy jones out we didn't talk about liars die set I suppose you should mention that real quick um in the pirate lanes it's not in the game yet but at some point liar's dice will be in there sailor we have an insert right there for a liar's dice yeah well sure he goes now the so liar's dice you will literally play liar's dice in the game how's that happen so once you enable it you're suited up there they'll get caught by the magnet up there and you'll roll five dice and they can wear it over all five guys on this you'll see what dice you have for a kook expression what liar's dice is your bidding between all of your dice and all of your opponent's dice you keep upping the bid either by the number of pips on the dice or the number of dice of pips right so two one two is higher than one one but two ones is higher than one to pretend that note so anyway what you can risk in liar's dice is either points or kind of like plunder and you can route points or gold or possibly an extra ball so so if you if you wager an extra ball then if you win right you get an extra ball if you lose you drain so that's kind of cruel well I mean so so Davy Jones his dice you know the technical implementation is that you'll roll seven dice and pick the most interesting five out of those seven so you'll have better dice and and large dice will always be available from the lanes if you want it as they like otherwise you have to complete the lanes three times or something before it start to become available jacks pirate you know the lucky guy so if you pick Jack then when you get a mystery from Tortuga each award we've associated a desirability he will scratch off the two least desirable awards and just pick from the remaining three so he's gonna increase your likelihood of getting something decent yeah right right now and mystery it's not random maybe it's a weighted random which five things show up but of the five things it's a straight chance a one in five chance of anything that's on there no matter what it is okay so what he scratches the qu often it's a straight one a three chance at the remaining things whether it be Swan so this is one of the last ones who came up with hey cuz I couldn't find a good quote for and beer just didn't know what he would do so once plundering gets in the game if you pick if you're tired of people stealing your stuff uh-huh you know like if you're playing if you're really good and you're playing a bunch of casuals and they keep stealing from you all the time you just pick whether it be Swan and no one can never steal from you looks idea is he can't do any plundering either so he can't he can't plunder nor can he be plum Weatherby is such a square law Blackbeard has a favorite choice in the office be forced to battle fate but I'd be tempted to cheat it so his multiball ball savers are longer well that's why yeah so most multi balls have about a ten second ball saver he increases it to twenty seconds makes it a lot easier to string all the multiball stacks together so you know it's a it's a decent thing to pick scrum he no I take a back like I thought that was great but that that's actually rigged scrum so you will spot if you played a chapter that has a female in it then he'll spot the female because he's of course he does sweet lady come on scrum and since there's not as many females as males in the chapters they'll probably also be worth more points as well that make sense yeah Marty Marty so normally after you play Tortuga multiball your goal goes back down to zero in the last movie you know he's miffed it you know you want us to pay you he says the jack so he'll keep some gold after Tortuga multiball I wasn't quite enough for him to do anything so also Gold scores more for him the bonus that it does for balance karinna so she's the you know she's she studies horology the study of time okay so naturally all the timers are longer like that every timer in the game whether it's a chapter timer an hour frenzied timer a play field next timer they're all longer with Carina that means more points Norton has another pretty popular choice so what he does this is he's good at hunting pirates and stuff like that but the chapter rules are easier so what that means is if you have the left ramp lit for Elizabeth Barbosa you don't have to shoot the ramp either of those stand-ups will count as shooting the ramp oh yeah right so and that's true for any shot on the game anything that's near the shot you are trying to make he will award it to you that is really powerful in the chapter so he comes with a pretty significant penalty oh no every chapter score is cut in half with Earl so all of your chapters are immediately worth half as much those high scores whenever you get into the different wizard modes correct no it's just number of characters you shoot okay so it helps with that a lot good deal but as far as the chapters themselves they some more half as much and if you use one of the helper shots it scores half of that ie 1/4 so it's even risk umber reward through the characters here cuz that's a big risk big reward right you know he if you start like what some of the movie 3 chapters have like 11 characters and you know if you're in a multiball with Norrington you will finish that in the blink of an you know and and you'll get a fair number of points even though it's just half of what it could have been mm-hmm but you know you'll finished it really quick because you know you're just hitting everything because it's multiball so oh right better the power the more significant the penalty as a result Henry just the diversion so as a result we didn't talk about the spot character stand up down there but basically dad has always lit during a chapter so if the ball ever hits that target you'll always spot a character oh the normal way at a light spot character is to shoot the shot of the character that you are so like if you're will then if you shoot the left orbit then spot character would light up if you're a jack you have to shoot the center shot to light spot character okay so normally it's not laid with him it's always always lit doesn't get hit all that often though either so you know Hector is like Norton except for multiball you know more like guideline so you're supposed to shoot that shot well you again you can cheat it by hitting the stand ups or whatever like Norrington as you might imagine yeah every multiball is cut in half boring wise but it's a lot easier to get multiball super jackpots and stuff - which is what you want for every scene the wizard mode score absolutely so again risk reward you know do you do you get a lot of supers because they're really easy or do you want all the points I can even see certain people's certain players game styles differing what they choose absolutely if they're a certain type of player they're gonna lean towards a certain character more often than others right and have some you know as we finish these up you'll some of them will cater to people who maybe get more annoyed like we all read whether it be you know every night about plundering well he's a looker yeah so Patel he's uh he's kind of a sneaky choice he spots pirate lanes so if you get good at the pirate lane so the one you start the game you'll have spotted five lanes for you so I need one lane Finnish pirate so your first award you'll happen immediately yeah then that number starts dropping off and you'll spot four lanes and three lanes and he bottoms out of two lanes okay so every time you complete pirates you'll have two lanes lit immediately the next time he makes it way easier hits your ramps and you're good firing Awards bootstrap bill he he doesn't do anything except whatever the difficulty of starting Deadman's multiball he knocks down one level so okay if like the normal way the game is set is if that open chest lock a ball woman chest like a ball if that's a default and you'll take it down one level which means open chest and then lock all three balls at once whoo you know now it keeps going up but but he will never get to the heart it's difficult the hearts difficulty you'll always be one back from perfect would you say that that's one of the what's the toughest multiball to start in your opinion that's probably subjective but you know move you it's funny you know each of them has their pros and cons I mean you know for a lot of people multiball five is to be a hardest cuz it's just not an easy shot to make even this one gives some people troubles but but we've recently added like a spot a couple of you know awards that ball start a couple of you know pieces of a to fall start their hope you get closer to this automatically okay sorry no no that's fine and and this one can be really hard for people to do because you have to get up here and play the play field and shoot the ship mm-hmm yeah so this I don't know and other people have trouble shooting the loop shots some people a static shot is easier than the moving rags everything play field okay let's hear Donna is an interesting one so we talked about how you can light all the characters mmm and if you go up there you don't know what you're gonna get with her you can pick what you want oh so you know I'm in it whatever chapters you have available you can pick between the ones that you've lit up and just you can just choose it's a little arrow that points and you can have selected okay her penalty as a result of that is that it's not easier to make chapter shots but since you know which one you're gonna get her her multiplier increase is cut in half so so instead of if you have two chapters lit normally its core or 1.5 X chapter score with her it would be 1.25 okay that's three chapters live yeah so 1.5 X so if you have all five lit that her chapters are scoring double instead of triple with you know a normal cat I'm trying to think which one I want to be like okay what's now let's see Beckett is probably to be a popular choice for a lot of people okay well you get gold and like a bunch of gold on screen it to keep it in the action button over and over again with him you sit the button wants and it all gets scooped up I've heard a lot of players of location in that the shows they end up gravitating towards Beckett especially those players that they have a hard time coordinating the action button as well so right lot easier to just go over and hit the button once you know get all the gold so so a couple penalties come with him normally if you have a lot of gold on the screen mm-hmm and every time you collect anything any piece of gold you get that is like a hundred points for the first one and it goes up by 25 so you have a lot of stuff on the screen you're actually getting a lot of points just by hitting the button and collecting the gold Oh so since he you only have to hit him once for him you get a hundred points and that's it plus he he's kind of a like he is very beneficial he's kind of a throw away because if you can press that and coordinate that fast enough oh you don't need but you don't eat him and he comes with another penalty too and that is his gold does not score as much as everyone else in bonus Marty scores more his scores less right so it's just trying to find the balance thereof you know the good and the bad with everybody if you wanted so did you have a reason to pick everybody so far yeah Angelica she spots one male character so we had scrum you spots a female Angelica spots a male plenty more males exactly every chapter has at least one male mm-hmm there's no all-female chapters there's a there's at least one chapter if not two that if you start it she will immediately finish for you oh okay well one benefit of picking these characters that we haven't talked about is that characters spotted for you in any chapter they show up in so they do so follow so if you pick Jack yeah then anytime Jack is a character in a chapter that you have to collect he gets spotted oh don't let me select them makes Tolson so and you get the points for them and all that stuff so there's at least one chapter that has angelica and jack so angelica gets spotted and then she spots Jack and we're chapters immediately over you oh so that figures and know who you choose to because you know maybe you're maybe more likely to pick a Norrington or a Kareena because you can't shoot that right orbit you know or Salazar or Henry because he can't shoot that was trying or something like that she's a nice little shortcut oh forget E so they have pasta so like so moany over again right so he's the pirate with one eye so so you can we couldn't we didn't just want to have the thing where you like get the ball back whenever you wanted so the the compromise is that the ball has to be on the Black Pearl mm-hmm you know which is where you lose his eyes right so if the ball is up here the black pearl then you can hit the button and get served in extra ball and now you're in multiball for no reason other than now there's lots of different things you can do with them to you just if you make the skill shot up under the ship you can hit the button right away and you're instantly starting your ball with two balls on the play field perfect or do you save it for later so if you're having a ball the right flipper and your multiball mm-hmm and you have a bunch of multi balls going you know ball to left flipper you drain your last ball then if you still have them you could shoot the ball up the ramp and hit the button and resurrect all of your multi life you can do it right exactly so you can't just do it by losing the ball it's gonna up the ramp in time I can hit the button fun ten thread the let's get it up there and bam if you can hold off not using them right away you know just to have multiball to start with a bomb now he does have a penalty and that is so well I know so I mean cuz that's really powerful yeah so anytime you use him then all of your scores are cut in half oh that's cool so he is half scoring as long as you're in multiball after you pick up okay so oh he's dangerous then right spot justification - right he's only got one nice it only was nice so there's you know he's an interesting choice okay a lot of things you could do with them um cotton you always steering the ship all the time and all the movies so the ship as it gets you know more going more and more he basically cuts the amount of motion in half so it's way easier to play the play field with cotton and he'll also double the scoring up on the step - and we needed more to do for whatever reason there are some players out there that have hard time with different aspects of games I can see some people just acing this ever play field with a swing I can see some people having some difficulty and just cognitively cannot get that movement down so then he's really nice then trying to chill that a little right the most controversial aspects of the game we have ways to mitigate right Phillip so he's kind of like bootstrap if you have a hard time shooting the loop it makes it easier to start on Stranger Tides multiball okay that's pretty much that's pretty straight only does and Gibbs that's our narrator right he's in there there's a voice in the game loves Tortuga so Tortuga is more valuable when your gifts the fact it scores double O so if you get Tortuga multi balls and you're getting double points in that multiball when you have Gibbs okay so he's pretty big and the bumpers score double through the whole game which isn't quite as important but it's uh it's a little bit longer of a choice because you know they're definitely you'll definitely have games you don't get to Tortuga mm-hmm but if you do you're scoring a lot more points with Gibbs than you are normal very cool very cool well that that's phenomenal I like that I say hopefully there's enough there for everybody there's enough Lee you know there's enough reason I want to pick everybody first off you guys need to have to have characters in this game is mega deep second all you had to really have his three and people would have they would have been ecstatic you have 22 different ways not only to play this game but just to pick the beginning of this game on on what what journey you're gonna stay alone and there's one more thing in play about the characters yeah no one can be the same character oh yeah that's right that's right so choice matters now in most times a tournament alright but now if you have a character you have an affinity for hmm if you are choosing first just to get the shot at get in that character someone else picks on then yeah you know but no matter what you're at a minimum gonna have to have four different characters that you're good at you know because your top three choices ready could be well Kate you've outdone yourself again buddy thinks they're walking us through the entirety of this code set and there's probably still
