## Transcript

Finally, a real haunted house machine. Oh, what's up everybody? It's surprise announcement time here on the eve of Chicago's Pinball Expo. I'm Don, and I am blown away, wig peeling off the back wall from the surprise announcement of the Winchester Mystery House coming from our friends at Barrels of Fun. I've got some insight that's unexpected. Oh, what's up, everybody? Just like Mr. Fab, getting hyphy in the South Bay. I'm extremely apart from myself I'm going to climb in my Scion I'm going to go down and hang out with E-40's entourage At Marine World Africa USA Are you kidding me, barrels? Are you kidding me right now? Doing a Bay Area themed pinball machine? Man, I woke up this morning I worked hard last night Got home, just crashed, took a nap I wake up at like 2.30, an hour after this announcement My phone has completely blown up What's going on? Anybody see this coming? Now the 13th, which is today, this was the day of the surprise announcement of some new crew with Barrels of Fun. And this is probably what they meant by that. So ignore that speculation of David Fix down in Houston. That's not happening. Although, I mean, do you blame me? I think it'd be awesome. I think it'd be awesome. So here's the thing, right? The Winchester Mystery House is an attraction from the South Bay area of California, the greater San Francisco, Oakland regional area. This is more kind of Santa Clara towards San Jose. Anyway, my old stomping grounds were exactly here. And like you couldn't drive up the 101, well, really, any time of the day to the traffic. But if you did attempt it, you would see billboards for the Winchester Mystery House for like 60 miles in each direction. Now, because I lived there, I never actually went to the attraction. But here's what it is. Everybody knows this place, at least in that area. This is wild to me that this just happened. so sarah winchester was the heiress to the winchester rifle fortune right she got the mansion she got the house stupid money probably like two and a half million dollars in 1885 which was like you know a billionaire today so she became of course a recluse a weirdo you know her mental stress had caught up and we didn't have the serotonin lifting agents that we have today so what did she do she got delusional in the mansion by herself and i'm guessing her staff And so part of her delusions were that bad things were going to happen, her life was going to end, somebody was going to be murdered once construction on the mansion was complete. So to thwart those dark spirits, she just continued construction around the clock until she died. So this mansion just got unnecessary expansions in every direction, including stairways that go nowhere, doors that are false. You know, it's just this whole house, it's almost as if the house was occupied by a weirdo for like 30 years. and then became a tourist attraction. You can go tour this place today. It's near San Jose out in California. And I'd never done the tour only because I had like a million other things to be doing. But the Winchester Mystery House, you could be taken through there and see these weird corridors that don't really function. You know, the solarium that doesn't go anywhere, unfinished projects that really had no purpose and things. So just kind of a kooky kind of tour. It would have been fun to go and do someday. And now maybe I have a reason. So out of nowhere, Barrels of Fun drops this after teasing that they had some new staff joining them. So it looks like Carl D'Python Anghelo, the designer of this game, this will be the first game he's designed? Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I understand, that seems to be the case. So he must be the new person that's joining, as well as whatever kind of haunted entities are in here. Now, as far as I know with the lore, it's not like this was a murder house, right? Where there's like dark spirits and things. So when I'm looking at the layout, I see what looks like kind of blood running downstairs. And it's more of like just a mysterious step into a delusional mind, more so than, you know, murders happened here, come check it out. Like, let's do paranormal stuff. And to my knowledge, I don't know if there's any actually legitimate-ish ghost sightings that occurred here. But hey, we had a pinball machine too. So I just had time to look through the flyer. I've watched the trailer, peeled my wig off the back wall, bumped up the Mr. Fab, about to hit some E-40 here in a bit, and then I'm going to play some Star Wars. But this, this is something that's got my interest six times more than Dune did. I said at the time that the game came out you know thanks for inviting me down there and play it It was super fun to get to play very lucky to be able to do that um i think barrels of fun probably made the best dune pinball machine uh ever right no but the the license didn pull me in though it too serious for me to kind of get into um and everything's just kind of brown with the blue lights and maybe i didn't get it i haven't played the fully fleshed out recent code it's been a few months since i've played this game so i'm gonna give another shot but it was something that while interesting and i didn't really need to jump at it didn't feel like i needed to jump at it i don't know that i'm alone i know there's a lot of people that seem to own this game that like it i'm sure it does well on location of course i've dumped coins in it on location so yeah not every game has to be for the home but this thing pulling me right in man here's a spooky mansion here's a themed space to go play in don't you want to come in here's a moving mechanisms little animatronic things I step up the dune and I can kind of see like everything that's there. You know, there's that little big Thunder Mountain in the back right area of the different diverging ball pass. But nothing like this. Was anybody else reminded watching the trailer of the tower toppling over from Lord of the Rings there in the back acting as a physical ball diverter? Like that's super fun. I don't know where the shots and layout goes because I don't have a lot of other video right now or I don't have a lot of other pictures. I have the game flyer and the trailer. And it looks like fun. I love that Barrels has continued this idea of using this LCD screen in the back of the play field to extend the field of view of the player to allow you to put more theme stuff down there. And this looks to be using a Pepper's Ghost effect from what I was reading there. This is an old ancient theater technique where you use some angled glass over usually a bright light on a subject. And then what you're seeing is a ghostly reflection. It's essentially weaponized glare. And so that's what they're going to be using here in order to put little ghostly figures and things that can interact with the ball potentially, or at least interact with the game's events. You would know this in pinball from, let's say, pinball 2000, right? Episode one and Revenge from Mars. Use that Pepper's Ghost effect with an LCD, not LCD, a cathode ray tube screen that was 90 degrees perpendicular to the play field facing down. You were seeing that glare out the glass. Interesting concept. and this is a great way to implement it with some space that's back there that you probably wouldn't be utilizing anyway of course you got the big mansion sculpt back there i love that i love being able to shoot through that and then putting a pepper's ghost over there while maintaining the ball pass underneath i think that really works it's a way to bring the screen out a little bit forward towards the player while still maintaining some functional play space underneath there so that looks fun uh and then uh gilligan's island called and they took the turntable from there for diverging ball pass. I like that rather than just having little flaps that pop up here and there, you get a whole turntable. You know, even, you know, novice type players will be able to see things moving back there and get that. Okay. There's now changing ball pass and targets. They took the three bank and drop targets from Kong. Kong had four. They put it back there by the upper flipper. I'm not mad about it. Give you something to do up there. I'm seeing this trend of pinball companies taking things that were beforehand relegated to an upper play field and just dropping them to the main playfield and making a street level playfield area that provides a lot of the same gameplay of an upper playfield but you're able to get there a lot more often because it's down there on the playfield uh specifically this and kong used that to great effect and it was the danger room was probably my favorite part of uh ultimate x-men uncanny whatever so i'm here for it i'm here for it i like that i like that uh looks like we got uh two three main ramps here uh one of which looks to be hittable from the upper flipper three full-size flippers and then that mini in that upper playfield area there's some kind of tilted mechanism that just looking to me on the flyer looks like a way to like physically shoot a ball up at a tower or something I don't know what that does back there it's a tilting ball lock what happens but that's interesting so what I'm seeing already is what I like to see from pinball machines and that is a mechanism or a ball pathway or a wire form that I as the player have to figure out what to do to qualify to get a ball up there and do the thing. I love that. I love that. I didn't really see that with Dune other than the, you know, Walmart logo-esque inspired flat worm drawing there, you know. Yeah, I'm not going to say it's reminiscent of colonoscopies, but you see where I'm going with that. This really is full of some mystery. And so thanks for doing that. And I love the Ouija board in the apron. Let me give them some shout outs here. well we've seen some third-party people making over some light integrated aprons for some older games your black knights your star tracks and things i believe it's a french fellow he shows up at the big uh the big conventions and expos uh so i like the fact that they're doing something cool with the apron i think pinball companies are looking at this area for uh the next place to drive some innovation right So for so long it been two apron cards and kind of a graphic and that all you get Maybe somebody signs the plastic So the fact that you've got a Ouija board down there that actually has some functionality lighting up with, you know, how many balls are locked or which player is in play, that's kind of cool. I dig it. And the little widget or whatever you call the little seance thing from the Ouija board has its own individual light-up faculties there. That's fun. that's fun and brings some innovation a step up from what we saw with dune where it was just that really cool artistic take on a graphic this one now has lights underneath i dig it so don what is this game this game's eleven thousand six hundred dollars two thousand dollar deposit if you want one right now i believe mad pinball is a distributor for these jeff and mad pinball com go ahead and ask him uh what his take on all this is i'm sure he's finding out maybe he got a heads up i have no idea i had zero heads up about this at all my head crashed out and hit the pillow at some point I woke up in my bed an hour after this and here we are. So it's coming with the accoutrement that you get with the barrels game, what they've made standard. It looks to be powder coated in some kind of like, you know, gray water design here. Maybe it's sparkly, maybe it's not, but you get the rad cows, which I like. You get a shaker motor, which of course you have to have. Invisible glass, there's rad cows and then this horizon lighting system they're calling it. A way to put lights in there that work similar to pin lights. They're less obtrusive, of course, than the stadium lighting system that we've seen other companies have. And this will allow you to raise and lower the play field without knocking lights and pulling on wires and things. I love that. I think the days of pin stadium are running out. Now that we're seeing actually integrated lights into the cabinet, which I dig. Lighting is so important in pinball, especially if you're going to have a premium focal point and something like this. Yeah, I mean, this works. Modding opportunities. you can basically put an unnecessary door anywhere you want in here and it will absolutely 100% serve the theme. So that's interesting. And like I had my finger wandering over to the order button, just like laying delirious in bed as I'm watching this. It's a South Bay Area themed pinball machine, man. I used to live down there. I was texting my old Bay Area friends like, dude, you're never going to guess what happened because I certainly didn't. There's a Winchester Mystery House pinball machine now of all things uh this is weird think of like your your local uh you know attraction whether it's your your graceland your built more mansion in in north carolina um or tennessee wherever the hell that thing is um you know you're just like your botanical garden or something like something you grew up with and maybe you went there in fourth grade on a field trip and you really haven't been there since unless like somebody brings someone from out of town spooky pinball you got to make a house on the rock pinball machine now to compete with this man If anything in Wisconsin deserves it, I want to see House on the Rock. If you haven't, it's the greatest roadside attraction in the country. I've been to a lot of them, except for Winchester Mystery House. Go check out House on the Rock. It's actually only about an hour from Benton. Holy garbage, man. That would be amazing. Another collection from a definite eccentric. It's hard to even encapsulate into words what that place is like. So, yeah. Otherwise, what else can I see from it? There's three pictures of each vantage point of the cabinet. So, you can see the left and right art. Brad Brad Albright did this. He did, remind me, Portal, game of the show. He did the art for Portal. So he's one of the, I don't know, 17 Brads in pinball art. So I dig that. I want to see what Carl has to bring with playfield design. Super cool. Lots of ramps, lots of flippers. The playfield itself seems pretty open, which is fun. This is not fan layout, so can we just avoid that argument? But I like the fact that there's not, say, a giant tank that's, you know, just like that's wingmanning or whatever. or just shot blocking right in the middle of the play field. Like there's some, there's some movability there. A lot of RGB lights. I want to play this thing. Is it going to be at expo? Have they even said, I don't even think I've read through all the Facebook posts and things yet. I want to give an early reaction to this. I was not expecting this today. Oh, of all things, a Winchester mystery house machine. Now, one thing that I'm not seeing, and I'll have to reach out to confirm this. Is there a topper included on the Winchester mystery house? Each of the machines that they've released have had a topper included. Uh, The Labyrinth Topper was one of my favorites that I've seen. There's definitely a topper arms race going on with Spooky and then Barrels of Fun kind of leading that. We saw some DPX weighing in as well with their topper, although we know what happened. People are still waiting on them. We're seeing what the Electric Playground is doing, essentially a topper company. So I want to know. Maybe it just wasn't ready for this reveal. Maybe this is part of the marketing strategy that they're using. I'm certain that they'll include some sort of acrylic topper. interactive with lights for the game, and then of course have an aftermarket topper, some kind of, probably a doorknob shooter rod that'll be on this thing. So all that is wait to be determined. We're going to be at Expo, they're going to be at Expo. Is this game going to be there How fun would that be to get a surprise announcement of another game that we can play only at Expo I excited Now what playing into this All right what really going on We're going into fall. We know that there's going to be a remastered release from Stern Pinball, most likely. We know we're going to see a game from Spooky, most likely. And then we had this game that just dropped that none of us were expecting. I mean, normally there's some chatter. I, looking at the market and surveying, it was expected a Texas Pinball Festival reveal for the next Barrels of Fun pinball machine, yet look around, friends. Here we are. So was Barrels of Fun's hand forced because they want to get some sales ahead of the spooky juggernaut that's about to drop? I think that would be a reasonable assumption. I think dropping this right before Expo is definitely going to create some hype. This was the kind of hype we saw with Labyrinth, where they just showed up unannounced, like, here's an incredible game that you weren't expecting, and boom. I mean, the longest lines of the show, I think that was Game of the Show at Expo. they have a chance on taking game of the show again here i know resting it from the grips of portal of all things with brad Brad Albright's art man this is like friendly fire going on so i'm excited about it uh 525 machines being made i love this idea i love this idea so if you secure one of these you'll be secure the fact of knowing that no more than 525 will exist out there and given the market that's an excellent choice i think an excellent option if you were drop this as another potential 1100 games um i think this would probably sell around 550 anyway so i think this is good this is good this will bake in that perceived imperceptibility uh of the owner if if that makes sense um so i like the 525 number um i want to see a topper i want to see more about this game i want to play it this theme and what they've designed here has gotten me much more tickled than what I saw with the Dune release. So I guess we could take this to speak also to the fact that probably Dune sales are just about caught up with production. Is anybody out there with a Dune order still outstanding that is being told they have six more months until they're going to get their machine? Given the game that's out there, the chatter online, when we're hearing back from people, it kind of seems that the satiation for the Dune pinball machine license theme game play field, everything has probably been met. And so this makes a great time to put this out there. And then I like the fact that you can still order a Dune if you want. They can still go back to that well and make some more. I'm trying to get – well, I'm not trying to get that. Pinball companies seem to be getting away from this idea that we need to make one game a year, completely sell that game out before we can start the next one. It's kind of good to build up a repertoire of other games you can put out there. Elton John is not sold out. Avatar is not sold out. Harry Potter doesn't even announce a sellout date for their top-level machine. But when sales slow, they can pivot and they can do a run of Elton John's if there's demand. They can do a run of Avatars if there's demand. So I think that's a good way to kind of buffer and future-proof yourself, have projects ready to go, some that are already out there that you can then pivot and do. Now, it doesn't need to be milked to the point that I think American Pinball was doing, where years later they're still making Houdinis. They're still making Hot Wheels. I hope they went to customers. But man, the only thing I think they could top this would be a surprise announcement from American Pinball. And I'm not talking about the whirly gig or whatever. They released an image concept of an alley roller type game, a skeeball machine. It looks like there's a quarter pipe at the end and then the targets are up on the ceiling. Kind of strange. I don't know pricing or availability for that. Orbit Games just seemed to drop that. But I'll follow along and try to find out what I can. So what's going to go on here? Spooky's got a game coming out, highly rumored to be themed around the ghost with the most. I'm here for it if that's the case, man. I would love to get myself one. Are they going to use this opportunity to go ahead and turn around and drop that game right now and collect deposits and try to steal them away from Winchester Mystery House? I'm guessing not. I think the guys are still going to be hanging out enjoying their fall and continuing with plans unabated. is this going to cause Stern Pinball to say, wait a minute, we've got to get Walking Dead remastered out there now in the face of maybe some lackluster Star Wars sales. Uh, maybe we'll see that happen. Um, I don't know. I'm excited. This is my last night of work tonight. I'm going to start packing everything up. I can't wait to get myself over, uh, to the pinball expo and start having a lot more fun than I think I did at that logistics conference that I was at a couple of months ago. Let me know your thoughts, kick them down below, uh, leave them on Spotify or over on Facebook where I'm also at on the discord at patreon.com backslash Don's pinball podcast I did not know about this you guys let's go out with some Mr. Fab and then I'm gonna go grab some E40 and play myself some Star Wars
