## Analysis

Greg Bone and Zach Meny review the classic 1981 Bally pinball machine Fathom, a well-regarded underwater-themed game featuring dual bonus tracks (blue/green sections), inline drop targets, multiball modes, and distinctive inverse in-lane/out-lane design. Despite praising the iconic artwork and innovative mechanics for its era, both hosts rate the game as a solid B-range machine, finding it somewhat fragmented in playflow and less engaging than other 1970s-80s titles like Meteor. They award Fathom a cumulative 3.0 grade, acknowledging its historical significance while expressing personal preference for games with better shot flow and spinner design.

### Key Claims

- [HIGH] Fathom's backglass is ranked #1 in their top 10 best backglasses — _Greg Bone states the backglass scored 'number one' in their top 10 best glasses list_
- [HIGH] The inverse in-lane/out-lane design (out lanes run back to flippers, in-lanes cause drain) is innovative for the era — _Hosts discuss this as a notable feature similar to Pirates of the Caribbean and Indiana Jones designs_
- [MEDIUM] Fathom features approximately 15 drop targets total across the playfield — _Zach counts roughly 15 drop targets visible, noting 'we got say 15' drop targets_
- [HIGH] The dual blue/green bonus track system makes the game feel like 'two games within one' — _Hosts describe the split bonus mechanics as making the game feel bifurcated_
- [HIGH] Fathom's restored condition (with new playfield, plastics, artwork) commands premium pricing that doesn't match gameplay value — _Greg states 'prices that it fetches especially for a restore' are not aligned with play quality, suggesting high secondary market prices for aesthetic reasons_

- **Secondary:** Comparison of 1970s-1980s pinball design philosophy across titles, Secondary market pricing and value retention of restored classic machines, Historical innovation in pinball mechanics (inverse lanes, dual bonuses), Underwater/aquatic theme in pinball design (past and future potential)

### Sentiment

**Mixed** (0.45) — Hosts respectfully acknowledge Fathom's historical significance, iconic artwork (A+ rating), and innovative mechanics for its era, but express measured to lukewarm enthusiasm for actual gameplay. Zach is notably more critical of playflow and enjoyability (B- to C ratings on gameplay), while Greg is slightly more appreciative of the overall package (solid B to B+ ratings). The tone is appreciative but not enthusiastic—both recognize why others love it without personally connecting to long-term replay value. Greg anticipates negative community reaction to their near-C cumulative score.

### Signals

- **[competitive_signal]** Hosts establish Fathom as historically significant and design-innovative but not competitively appealing against other 1970s-80s titles in modern collector context (confidence: medium) — Zach: 'there are some older pins that I like the rulesets better like a meteor...this one just seems a little too split at times for me'; Greg maintains higher rating (B+) but acknowledges personal preference divergence
- **[design_philosophy]** Fathom's spinner shot design (non-orbit, mid-playfield) lacks the satisfying flow of comparable games; Zach prefers orbit spinners for continuous ripping during play (confidence: high) — Zach: 'it's not a mid play field spinner but it's kind of a it's not a mid play field spinner but it's kind of a it doesn't feels good if it were on an orbit that's agreed'; 'I'd rather have spinners that are in orbits that continue all the way around'
- **[design_innovation]** Fathom's inverse in-lane/out-lane design and dual drop-target bonus track are recognized as innovative for 1981, with inverse lane mechanic appearing in modern games like Pirates of the Caribbean (confidence: high) — Hosts identify these as notable mechanics; reference to Pirates of the Caribbean using similar inverse lane design; discussion of bonus track innovation
- **[design_philosophy]** Fathom's split blue/green bonus mechanic creates fragmented play experience that feels like 'two games within one,' limiting flow-based engagement preferred by modern players (confidence: high) — Zach: 'it feels sometimes a little too split I feel like it's almost two games at once where I'm playing a blue game and I'm playing a green game'; Zach: 'I don't enjoy it long term as I thought I would'
- **[event_signal]** Hosts mention TWIG (major pinball tournament) coming 'soon' in 2019 with significant preparation underway, indicating major community event planning (confidence: medium) — Greg: 'twig puppy yeah share the video by temperature category is gonna be a big big big ceremony big for 2019 coming soon yeah we're putting a lot of working we're prepping right now'
- **[market_signal]** Restored Fathom machines command premium secondary market prices driven primarily by aesthetic/artwork appeal rather than gameplay value—prices exceed what gameplay quality justifies (confidence: high) — Greg: 'I look to this machine because the prices that it fetches especially for a restore warrant looks good I wouldn't say that it plays to that price standard'; 'a lot of it is the aesthetics of it'
- **[competitive_signal]** Hosts debated internal methodology for rating classic (pre-1990) games: whether to evaluate against era standards or modern standards. Settled on era-appropriate comparison while allowing legitimate cross-era gameplay comparisons (confidence: high) — Zach: 'we had a lot of argument on how to rate these older games...how do we rate it for the time period do we rate it compared to today...we stayed more true to the time period'; Greg acknowledges valid comparison to modern titles
- **[sentiment_shift]** Community consensus (Fathom as 'one of the greatest pinball machines ever made') conflicts with hosts' measured B-range assessment, with Zach expressing stronger preference for comparable-era alternatives like Meteor (confidence: high) — Greg anticipates 'hate mail' for near-C rating; Zach states 'give me stern meteor over vallys fathom isn't that crazy'; Zach rates enjoyability as C despite respecting design
- **[licensing_signal]** Hosts discuss potential for modern underwater-themed pinball (potentially unlicensed like Fathom) and note it could appeal to contemporary audiences, suggesting underutilized theme category (confidence: medium) — Greg: 'I would love to hear you see more things like this...I don't think it's license or I don't think it has these pretty free yeah that'd be actually becoming me because he grabbed a lot of the old timers'

this [ __ ] [Music] all right everybody today we're gonna kick it old school and we're gonna do a game review of a 1981 pinball machine where you born yet Greg bone in 1981 nope I mean it looked like it but I wasn't hell you weren't you didn't come around for another couple years yeah yeah like the the rerun of a ball Deluxe's when you came out yeah a little trivia there for you okay we're gonna review Bally's fathom how about you get a little friend with you today here oh it's just this middle slave a slave to this new necklace I picked up you know I don't wear much do I don't know what I'm gonna do with you so I thought it does look pretty I need something everybody loves Greg bone bone loves you we're gonna review Bally's fathom now we know that this is a pinball machine that is loved by many yes it's one of the classics class of 81 yeah so it should be an A+ right I don't know we're gonna we're gonna find out before we begin fathom is all about a man being kind of taken underwater a diver he was taken underwater by some vicious mermaids we don't know their intentions dirty dressed a mermaid you ones last time you trusted the mermaid you got drunk one night and some chick is like you know I'm really a murk man you're like really you're been wishy washy down in Florida you ever seen wishy-washy oh wait there's a kid like it's been around for years speaking about 81 it's probably around then so literally like there's there's a there's a park in Florida the park and floor what part of Florida maybe around Nikola maybe right like the Tampa Tampa area all right I don't know I have to look it up but literally like you go down underground and there's like a big thing like aquarium and chicks get in there really in mermaid tails and they put on a show and they got like a hose and where the shells to get air yeah and to get air and they like real mermaids under freaking water and they put on a performance for you wishy-washy is like a staple I cannot believe we've never that is a kid do you feed them can you feed don't you feed the mermaid you throw a little crackers in there yeah but no because it's always so it's just I think it's like a it's a natural spring that they're into I think they plume glass or I can't remember it's tied into it now you've probably just stopped going because they excluded mermen if you could be a merman for a day with you what would you do as a mermaid like why would anyone do you know what I want to do is be a mermaid Oh suit Landers you pocket eight by shark you marry a man there be a Dean Mannheimer yeah man yeah I'll ever understand though the mermaid there's a little coffee oh my god I think we should receive a feather into the liquid I shouldn't like double add alright so let's get into it we're gonna do an overview of fathom with myself if you want to better to go over to Boeing Karen see it was a better tutorial than I do mine's probably clear visually than theirs why my papa let's kick it let's go over there [Music] alright who's ready to see and talk Bali spam 1981 okay look at the layout real quick here all these older games are pretty simple but very tough and difficult to master okay the keys on this game are two rows of inline drop targets one for the green section over here this is the cave [ __ ] and one up top for the lagoon trap and those will pop up as you play the game so lay out from left to right down here first off you want to see some very interesting inlanes the inlanes and outlanes have inversed so you're outlanes actually run it'll run back in to your flipper where you're inlanes or cause for death I see that rubber right there you can bounce it out if you're skillful enough like on the New Jersey Jack Pirates of the Caribbean you can bounce it back into play also similar to the right out lane of Indiana Jones the pinball adventure okay and is that we'll talk rolls kind of as we're going through the layout here you've got a blue section and a green section so as you're rolling through those you're gonna advance that bonus and when that's late you're you need 50,000 to the left we'll call it bout life but that is your anything and special one with their same coordination over here besides this being your green advancing bonus so on this game it's very unique in that there are two two sections basically you've got your blue bonus and you've got your green bonus all right so you're building up separate bonuses the whole time so the game feels almost like two games within one okay right as we're going up here we've got a bank of drop targets three greens three Blues each target is nine hundred but what those targets are also gonna do is they're gonna spot you so if you hit down all the green targets it's gonna spot you progress towards your green drop targets here I believe same with blue if you have done all three blue ones it's gonna spot you the inland routes up top that represents your blue area okay going up you see the middle bank here if you hit one two three in sequence you're going to advance your bonus five times now that's going to be determined based on if you're on the blue or if you're on the green so you'll be on the blue and you advance that five times or if you're on the green you try to get those down in sequence to advance the five times again each section each area here's your blue bonus here's your green boughs alright if you get up to fifty five on each it holds that bonus for the next fall so you want to try to get to fifty five that's the goal so you can keep that bonus down here's your three times four times five times it'll show your multipliers okay here's our loop shot so you're going to they've got rollovers as well you're going to loop it up here and very unique to this game and very satisfying your inline drop targets the first time you hit it up there it's going to capture that ball as a ball lock into the lagoon ramp look at this art once you hit that ball in there those drop targets are gonna come up then you've got to start the multiball you have to hit down those drop targets to release that ball now the first time you hit it down you're going to advance that bonus and add 10,000 the second drop target you hit the same kind of thing you're going to advance it to blue bonus advance and 20,000 and then three and then on three you're going to release that ball for the to fall multiball okay here's your spinner very satisfying spinner feels really good whenever it is lit you're hitting that four five thousand-plus if you have your bonus up you're gonna hit that four major major points so the big goal on this game I'll tell you right now is to get your multiball going and then rip some spinners another tip whenever you've got the multiball going whether it's the upper multiball for the two Bowl or the bottom weave the green multiball if you will we'll call it that you're gonna want to grip those finish that you do not want to do you don't want to trap the ball again I don't believe because if you trap the ball let's say this one in Jackson you've got two bald little too far gone if you hit a ball back up there and trap it your multiball is over so your bonus is over because when you're in that multiball that's when you have your five time bonus okay now there are advantages and there's a lot of strategies in this game but essentially tried starting multi balls or if the spinners okay now let's say you're you've got to drop targets down there you need one more drop target if you hit those three blue ones it's going to release that because it's gonna spot you a drop target up there alright very important to know also these advancing lit bonus five times that is similar to your ABC rail over so that's going to do the same thing it's going to advance your bonuses as well you can get a special update as well typical pop bumpers very pretty and then this is this is your extra Bowl as well as advancing bonus but most importantly this target right here is going to light you're spinning you need that here's your inline drop targets up here function the same way as the ones up there get a ball up in there it's gonna lock it then you're gonna have to hit down the drop targets to release that now assemble say I think Bo and Karen says that on his tutorial that you you don't necessarily want so when you have two ball multiball you got two times play field I believe you don't necessarily want to try to start that third to get a three ball multiball because it's almost hectic you can't control it and you almost just want to use 1/2 ball multiball and then focus on the other two ball multiball then back to here back to here but you're willing to keep your eye on the bonus to see how you can build up each side so so cool you've got your third flipper right here as well that can hit the drop targets right there or right there and it can also hit that loop another strategy on this game is not always using that it's a pretty safe bet that when you go up there and it comes back down it's gonna go safely to your right flipper if you can drop drop catch it or or something like that okay how what else do you guys need to know play the art let's just let's just really quick so this is a restored a restored Fenton brainy Kevin brain d-bag glass brand new x-men displays brain and plastics all the topsides new new play field this is something I don't want to get rid of but I cannot afford to keep so some for just maybe the prettiest pinball machine made this is family all right Gregg boom you played some you play some fathom when I had it don't ya yeah tore it up yeah kind of brutal yeah I think because it was brutal because mine was restored clearcoat or brand new super fat fast but is a slow game yeah that one in particular was fast let's start with as we always do art hmm how do you feel about the art of fathom knelt on our back glass and spoiler alert or top 10 bad glasses is one of our so it was the top one yeah it scored a number one so with that said does the rest of the cabinet and play field match it for you yeah I kind of do okay on two shots and later yeah go I mean I don't know what to say about I mean it's a different style art it's more of a straighter I mean it's a hand roll of the time but it's just laid out Marvis Lee we know what you're saying yeah what about the cabinet I like the I like the the stencil oh yeah I think scales on the fathom because it's it fits very well but it's simplistic exactly I guess color tones me out or greens blues yeah and I just I can't I love that underwater like I just love that color palette that scheme it's just gorgeous man and it it's something at the same time it's still powerful hmm and you know it just says something you know and it's maybe shirtless men say that to just power vigor bigger bigger bigger bigger you know okay so you're at an a vigorously yeah you written a on the art package yeah I'm surprised not a plus yeah you know I probably should have thanks want a lot of people own it because it's so beautiful I'm gonna named fluffy Ellie did whatever about you led people that hate but it's even the mere bag let's think about that I don't know why you're in it laid the scores why it's not gonna matter they're yeah so I'll go a plus ok we'll change it changed okay a plus I'm gonan a plus as well phenomena it's the best part about this a moment she my party that's why you're spending the money it probably yeah I look to this machine because the the prices that it fetches especially for a restore warrant looks good I wouldn't say that it plays to that price standard so I think that a lot of it is the aesthetics of it give me the playfield plastics even over the playfield itself the octopus top right corner I can see the plastics then goes it really beautiful yeah the playfield sand I still like the the MIRR man or mermaid mermaid I've got my man's on my hand her at the anchor of the synthol anchor and him in the drain just like dying he's running out of air yeah I so say it tells a story the playfield really tells us the whole pinball tells a story you're not really sure what that story is no but I ambiguous well yeah it's like yes is a sexual it's it's like a short film that you know it's almost like a snippet from a film a scene like this oh just spit all over it's like you're really on stage here 3d view at the 3d review for dates for you get wet yeah no no keep going aquatic boy what else are you gonna talk about but it's it is it is like a scene yeah you might not have the whole story it's up to you to develop that story but it gives you a scene in it set in that scene so well that you don't really see much about it before or the mermaids or the mermaids being sexual or are they really trying to kill this guy I mean I think it's like a UH the scientist I think it's like sirens inaudible seductive but then they're just gonna they're gonna kill you yet oh yeah they use their sexual prowess to to rope you in and then murder your ass well there's one when the playfield I don't know if I'd be prowling okay I think what I can give at this point Taylor feet [ __ ] alright so let's move on to shots and layout this is a unique layout it's a three flipper yeah we have our upper flipper that goes Lou believe you're not familiar with the Odyssey Homer's The Odyssey we're such a studious man of the the not much into a fiction like if I want to but that's like required like really not in public school I can't afford kill a mockingbird is about this Boo Radley no the shots and layout I like them they've got rollover targets into the orbit you got yeah inline drop target banks that's front my favorite part they captured the ball agree so multiball in both of them no saucers you have really interesting out Lane in lane that inverse so the outlanes are actually the inlanes and lanes are outlanes and you can do a bump back or you can whether you consider but back oh well yeah yep you can do that as well so spinner you got a spinner yes who doesn't like to rip a spinner I like ripping spinners I am at you're at a beat nice solid feet yeah I'm gonna be - the only reason I'm gonna be - instead of higher would be it's not really a flow game for me yeah yeah you're hitting inline drop targets which is fun you've got a lot of drop targets on this game yeah I'd rather have spinners that are in orbits that continue all the way around and your spinner is not an orbit spinner so it's kind of a it's not a mid play field spinner but it's it doesn't feels good if it were on an orbit that's agreed so that's why I'm gonna be - it's not one that I'm like ooh I want to shoot fathom because it feels good mm-hmm it feels fine but for the time it's fine even for the time like give me a meteor a meteor I'm ripping that spinner I'm flowing but see I like those drop targets I like to hit them because they're dangerous well then they're blue or green and they get the back ones aren't as dangerous as your your green waggish your green ones are on the right yeah yeah they're not as dangerous as your green ones I guess yeah but I don't know there's something I really like about in in lime drop target I don't know I do love and then dropped or yes you love them here that's more reasons I like dolly like I think it's nothing it's good now rules in code rules in code here's the caveat to this you mean you were kind of discussing before this how do you rate rules and code in a 1981 pin well I think shots follow to that st. they can follow think squad scoring balance kind of falls in that too yeah scoring balance is important yeah more so than how many modes are in a game necessarily because we didn't wanna we had a lot of argument on how to rate these older games because our first older it's pretty old in that we've really rated like this and how do we rate it for the time period do we rate it compared to today because the shots no the shots honestly could feel as good close isn't as much as they're remaking some of these older layouts and pins nowadays and without the depth of the code you could still still somewhat compare it if your points gob points based game so how do you you're maximizing bonus yeah that's so so we stayed more true to the time period innocence do you agree with the Maryam to other seventies and eighties game yeah with the ratings but I still think it they can stack up and ring true with some of today's pins yeah you're to be modest you don't have the complexity but it's still yeah very well I'm with you you being able to be - you're you're higher up on other 70s 80s kind of games yeah I'm gonna solid be mm-hmm the reason I'm not at an a the reason of so here's the thing I like that there's a blue section in a green section you're going back and forth for those bonuses I like that there's a multiball I like that I like all the balancing that this has I like that you have to hit in sequence the one two three drop targets yeah I like how they alternate the blue green drop targets to the left to spot you're in line drop it's very unlike all very unique but that being said is it it feels sometimes a little too split I feel like it's almost two games at once where I'm playing a blue game and I'm playing a green game I just don't feel like it's integrated all time maybe that's the risk reward but and then also I do like that I usually start one multi Bowl by itself and I don't try to get the three ball I tried to a two ball and then alternates another two ball and alternate to another two at the end of the day I think it is solid it's a solid B there are some older pins that I like the rulesets better like a meteor might be even simpler a meteor but you're loading up drops to rip a spinner all day long as you're building up those bonuses but this one just seems a little too split at times for me and you just like you said it doesn't really stick up that much for mother he told me then really stick out that much for mother older you know late seventies early eighties pins yeah again I think the notoriety comes from Dart I think a lot of it does you're right okay so how in the world do we rank toys and innovation yeah what do you do you do make mechanics mechanisms this is the worst one this is what does not stack up to modern pants we do mechanisms and I think you do anything that is innovative that you haven't seen in another game you'd almost have to say mmm mechanisms and innovations make it yeah say mechanisms nations nicob ations megabases mom get patience okay so with that being said what are something yeah that's perfect for you today or something makes you like on this game the drop targets okay there's plenty of there's about 1 2 3 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 we got say 15 15 drop targets bitter some drop target you got spinners interrupter I think there is an innovation in the code how it is split oh you're not just it's not a linear thing you're running two different paths at one time if you want to if you don't like the blue switch over to the green load up that bonus yeah I think another innovation is the B inlanes yeah going outside and coming back in yeah I think that's innovative as well but I don't know what other pins I hear you're more studious than me and I don't know son but there are some bit of double a double out to end what's not yeah that's not not really done if at all that I'm thinking of there's a couple odd balls in there but nothing super innovative here I do like when you plunge the ball it doesn't go all the way up to the top of my foot because that's where you drop huggers on put your solution and it's a little date there so yeah other net I am at Abby because I do like not one set of inline drop targets but - yeah and I like the outlines that go in because that's really groovy yeah I like being able to pop it back in I didn't - but it's just look a lot of these older games don't have inline drop targets a lot of these other games don't have spin that's what you had to give it a beat - this is loaded for this again though that is just pertaining to sort of its era Marco specialties same-day again like any of these under this doesn't see that been pretty didn't read that either you know what that would actually maybe go for decent yeah I don't think it's license or I don't think it has
