## Transcript

what you walk into Revenge of is: you're walking into your local geek bodega. You can pick up a sandwich, you can grab a comic, you can sit and play a pinball game in the middle of your day. Revenge of is a comic book store slash pinball arcade slash community gathering space in the Glassell Park neighborhood of Los Angeles. So the three of us that are owners here at Revenge of come from the television industry. We started collecting pinball machines back in 2020, as COVID obviously shut down everything here in Los Angeles. You couldn't go anywhere to play, we ended up collecting quite a few pinball machines on our own between the three of us. So we decided why not make them available to the public? And what goes better with pinball than comics and visual narratives? So the initial idea of the space was to be a place that kind of has everything that you would want for a nerd, but then we also thought it would be cool to maybe have a spaceship element to it. So that's where the first pinball room came to be, that's kind of the spaceship of the bodega, you know? There were already pinball locations that were in bars or in restaurants, and we decided let's do something different. Our television background really kind of glued us into the whole branding thing. We wanted it to be like a 360 world you stepped into, where everything Revenge of branded top to bottom. They reached out to different artists to create new designs. I'm not repping it today, but I have at least 10 different shirts at home. So here we are. With Venom, we are an official Stern Army verified location. Stern is an amazing company that really puts in a lot of effort to bring the pinball community to life. There's actually a lot of great pinball players in the LA community. There's a ton of pinball leagues all over, and it was important to us to kind of make our own mark in the community and create another space for everyone. My name is Tyler White. I'm the league director here at Revenge of. I'm essentially like everyone's pinball best friend. We just try to be the most welcoming league in the sense that I want people to come here to learn pinball for the first time. Whether you're that player, whether you've played pinball for a decade plus, this is a league that can kind of cater to everyone. Everyone shows up, people get paired up randomly, you play, and essentially after two weeks we take everyone's scores and we put them into divisions. So in divisional play you get paired up against people who scored similar to you, in your range. I host women's tournaments here once or twice a month, and every tournament we're getting new girls that are having their first experience with pinball tournaments. They want to go to a space where they can feel comfortable and dip their toe in the water. This is a family-friendly place. All ages can play. We try to make it fun. We've been very excited at the implementation of The Insider connected leaderboards on the Stern machines. It's really been a way for us to drive players to come in and participate in a casual competitive nature as they're playing pinball. So we've become kind of well known for our event programming. And as production designers and production people, we kind of go all out when it comes to our events—big parking lot parties, bringing other vendors in, food trucks, and things like that. This weekend's our two-year anniversary, and to celebrate we're doing 36 hours of straight open play time. We're going to have a Jaws tournament with the first Jaws machine in our store. We wanted to bring out the Jaws machine, kind of cover it up and just leave it out for a whole day and just let people get excited about it. We were able to also get some Jaws board games and we've got some fun graphics that we're throwing up, and everyone's really excited for this new Jaws machine. So we're stoked. For us, pop culture is such a large, multifaceted venture that is movies, television, comic books, pinball, events, and that's something that's important to us here. We really are striving to create a communal space for people to come hang out, have a drink, have a bite to eat, play pinball, play a game of Magic. We can have a kids party one day, and then the next you might be playing pinball next to a celebrity that you recognize. People come through that are involved in the machines or starred in the show that their face is on the machine. And it's kind of cool to see them react to it and play it. Mr. Keanu Reeves himself came in and said "Hey, hey, how can we help you?" And you know his response was "Hi, I'm an actor." We're like "Yes, hi, Keanu, very nice to meet you." Revenge of is great because it's foremost a nerd paradise. The amount of community that we host here, this place has allowed me to really turn into a mentor. We really like the fact that people can feel safe in expressing their fun. We've built a multidimensional nexus where you can pick up a Spider-Man comic and then walk over and play a Black Knight game, and it's accessible to everyone.
