## Analysis

Don reacts in real-time to Spooky Pinball's December 6, 2023 announcement reveal, identifying two simultaneous game releases: Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Looney Tunes. He expresses skepticism about Spooky's practice of releasing two themed variants on identical playfield layouts, comparing it unfavorably to their previous Halloween/Ultraman dual release, and speculates about whether the company has learned to better differentiate the games thematically.

### Key Claims

- [HIGH] Spooky Pinball is releasing Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Looney Tunes as two themed variants on the same playfield layout — _Don identifies both games from the reveal video and confirms dual release with same layout: 'a double release of a game that's not a bad idea like a hardcore chainsaw maniac film theme it's going to have it's fans for sure and then they are doing Looney Tunes which will be a family friendly theme for sure'_
- [HIGH] Spooky previously released Halloween and Ultraman with identical layouts, same spinners, same upper playfields, same Vux subway system, and same ball reveal sound effects — _Don states: 'what we had with Halloween and Ultraman was the exact same gameplay same spinners same upper play fields same Vux subway system the same sound effects for the ball reveal which worked really well for Halloween and didn't make any sense to Ultraman'_
- [HIGH] Games were going on sale Friday, December 8th — _Don reads official information: 'on sale Friday December 8th so you have two days to figure out if you want to go in on one of these'_
- [MEDIUM] Don speculates Texas Chainsaw Massacre could be themed to just the first film or the entire film series — _Don questions: 'Is that just the first film Is it the whole series of films I guess we'll find out on December 8th'_

### Sentiment

**Mixed** (0.35) — Don is excited about the announcement and recognizes merit in the dual-release concept, but expresses significant skepticism about Spooky's repeated practice of pairing thematically disparate games on identical mechanical layouts. ### Signals

- **[design_philosophy]** Spooky Pinball's pattern of releasing identical playfield layouts with different themes raises questions about thematic design integration vs. mechanical reuse efficiency (confidence: high) — Don criticizes the practice: 'it seems like you should have a layout designed around that theme and incorporate it. And this comes off as there is a layout that was designed for this game, and then this theme was shoehorned onto it'
- **[market_signal]** Speculation that Spooky may have learned from Halloween/Ultraman feedback and improved thematic differentiation within shared mechanical framework (confidence: medium) — Don muses: 'maybe they've learned from that and we may find this out on December 8th that they are taking the bones of a good shooting Dick White wood and then adding different elements to that'
- **[licensing_signal]** Uncertainty about scope of Texas Chainsaw Massacre license (single film vs. entire franchise series) (confidence: medium) — Don questions: 'Is that just the first film Is it the whole series of films I guess we'll find out on December 8th'
- **[market_signal]** Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Looney Tunes positioned as simultaneous releases with different tonal/audience positioning (horror vs. family-friendly) (confidence: high) — Don notes contrast: 'a hardcore chainsaw maniac film theme it's going to have it's fans for sure and then they are doing Looney Tunes which will be a family friendly theme for sure'
- **[announcement]** Spooky Pinball officially announces dual simultaneous release of Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Looney Tunes on December 8, 2023 (confidence: high) — Don confirms both games from official reveal video and states on-sale date of December 8
- **[product_concern]** Previous dual-release (Halloween/Ultraman) demonstrated theme-mechanics mismatch, particularly with sound design not fitting Ultraman IP despite working for Halloween (confidence: high) — Don states: 'same sound effects for the ball reveal which worked really well for Halloween and didn't make any sense to Ultraman'

## Transcript

All right, hey, it's time. It's 5 p.m. on, what is today, the 6th? This is the day and stated time that Spooky Pinball was revealing something. So let's do a little bit of a reaction video to this. I peeked at it, like, it looks like a 50-second or 45-second video or something is up on their site. So let's go ahead and we'll watch that now. No, no, not that one. Yes, that one. All right, let's hit it. Okay. I'm hearing some... It doesn't sound like Looney Tunes. Ex-Erbia Films. Gotta look that up now. Chainsaw. I mean... What else could that be? What else? It's gotta be Texas Chainsaw Massacre. So no Goonies, no Princess Bride, no David Bowie-ness. There it is. All right. A horror theme from Spooky Pinball. And all right. I guess I don't have to look at that stuff. Was that it? That's all we get? That's all we get? Oh something went up 22 minutes ago What this one Let look at this one Right. Okay. So. So. What the hell? Hang on. Let's roll that back again. Oh, December. Fam. Fam, let's bring it back. All right, this is me talking here. Family. I think these boys have gone and done it again. Now, okay. Another rumor has been that they're going to go back to the Halloween Ultraman. Same layout, two different theme, business. alright so a double release of a game that's not a bad idea like a hardcore chainsaw maniac film theme it's going to have it's fans for sure and then they are doing Looney Tunes which will be a family friendly theme for sure this doesn't preclude the possibility of two different machines with two different layouts double simultaneous release. I could see that working I could see that working If they doing two themes with one layout though I don know I not as much a fan of that I'll tell you why. Because it seems like you should have a layout designed around that theme to incorporate it. And this comes off as there is a layout that was designed for this game, and then this theme was shoehorned onto it. I think there's ways to do that. like say if you have the basic shots and everything you know designed you've got a good shooting white wood and then you add other elements to that I think it could work what we got with Halloween and Ultraman was the exact same gameplay same spinners same upper playfields same Vux subway system the same sound effects for the ball reveal which worked really well for Halloween and didn't make any sense in Ultraman so that's kind of why I wasn't a fan of that maybe they've learned from that and we may find this out on December 8th that they are taking the bones of a good shooting white wood and then adding different elements to that what does this have to do with the pieces they send out I have no idea it's not Saw so it's not Saw it's not Goonies it's something to do with Looney Tunes which that runs an entire gamut I mean this could be you know Bugs and Daffy on an adventure or this could be another Bugs Bunny birthday bash All we know is the license and it a very broad one We know the license of Texas Chainsaw Massacre Is that just the first film Is it the whole series of films I guess we'll find out on December 8th. Was there any more information back there? Let's pop back here, fam. Let's head back over to the YouTube page here for Spooky. What do we got? Serving soon and tune in. All right, that's fantastic. We have live streams from weeks ago. no live stream now at least not on YouTube maybe they get something on the Facebook page just pop over there and uh pfft Nap Arcade got it alright here Pinball Stars got some stuff let's see on sale Friday December 8th so you got two days to figure out if you want to go in on one of these um ok alright so there we go alright I guess we'll know more here soon ostensibly on the 8th. But yeah, there's your reaction video as I see it. I'll have some thoughts and definitely more to come. So be sure to follow the YouTube page. Follow the Facebook page. Email me at donspinballpodcasts at gmail.com. Get on the Patreon for five bucks. We're doing giveaways in a couple days. And the 15th, we're giving away a Godzilla banner to some random subscriber. Could be someone that's been there from the beginning. Could be someone that's dropping in late on the 14th. Who knows? We're going to randomly pick somebody. It's going to be fun. And go check it out. I will now upload this to the interwebs. Thanks, everybody.
