## Transcript

Uh huh. Happy Sunday, pinfolk, or whatever day you're listening. This is NYC Pin Pod, in which a panel talks location pinball in New York City and nearby surrounding areas. My name is Benjamin Fioriga. My initials are BCF, and it's baseball season. My name is Eric Sweetland. My initials are HIP, and I'm a pinball tournament director in New York City. Well, my name is Zanzacniak. My initials are ZEN, and I'm not as good as Nick Zendayas. On this week's pod, we'll run down local competition results in ball one just like we always do. In ball two, we'll do that thing we always do also. We'll give you venue updates courtesy of Pinball Mappin' Its Users, thanks to Eric. And then we'll do our bullet journals. We'll tell you what kind of pinball we played in the past week. And then after that, we will update you on the finalists from each region of the NYC PPPAA tournament. Let's get started. Let's talk about competitive pinball in New York City and nearby, well actually we're probably not going to do nearby surrounding areas this week. At Scrapple Land, the Scrapple Land first anniversary tournament was convened under Ali Bissett's direction. 32 players got together. They had 5 rounds of match play and the top 4 to 8 it says, and I'm pretty sure they did 8. Sean Grant bested the field. Greg Pavarelli came in second. Susie Zalewski third, making it a power couple in the final group. And Dan Merrill came in fourth. He got 13.84 whoppers for his efforts. And I just want to point out an interesting accounting discrepancy here. Match play says 32 players were there, but the IFPA indicates that 33 were there. Nick Berry was marked inactive at some point, but I know there were 33. I also heard in later conversation that Susie Zalewski really got a hold of that final game of Fishtails to blow it up. Got her some monster fishes. Also on Saturday, South Slope Strikes for March 2026 was held at Buttermilk Bar in South Slope. We had 18 players for this head-to-head four strike affair. After 13 total rounds, Alex Kelly survived with only three strikes, besting Rob Wong in Second, AJ Gould in third, and Solon James in fourth. Alex picked up 6.11 Whoppers. There were three players at South Slope Strikes who had previously played at the Scrappleland first anniversary tournament. They made the trek down as soon as the qualifying at Scrappleland was done and they didn't make finals and got to Buttermilk just in time to join us. Courtney, Solon, and Sam Hull were the three double dippers. Oh, that's crazy. So the one happened at 1pm and then they came, they made their way, presumably mostly on the G train down that way to, that's, that's cool. That's crazy. I wanted to do it, but I didn't feel like I could risk it since I wasn't in charge of the strikes. Yeah, yeah, you're running the second one. Yeah, it feels like, feels like it might have been crazy to try to do both. On Sunday, Michelle's Martini Max Match Play Madness, it seems like that's five Ms, happened at Pinahan Gardens. 35 players got down on nine pinball machines, 16 matches of Max Match Play, and then did a group There you go. Beautiful. As you know, she is doing the shoop elimination bracket for the finals, and when it was all said and done, Edy Kreutzer came out on top, besting Morgan Levinson, Tommy Ortega, and Matt Grady, respectively. They playeditness po Few Euster in the finals. And Edy got 21.49 Whoppers for that win. I would venture to say I don't know for sure I'm not looking at her scorecard when I say I would say this, but I would venture to say that's probably the biggest number on her scorecard. Sunday morning fact check, that is true by nearly a factor of 10. It is also the only first place on EDA's open IFPA scorecard. Congrats, EDA. On Monday, March 23rd, in bars all around the city, Pinball NYC's left flipper division had their sixth round. Worms went to Gebhardt's Beer Culture to face the 2-for-1ers and the home team got a 9-7 win. This was Worms' best result yet, but the 2-for-1ers have solidified their resume for an orbit playoff spot. Our New York City Flipper Sport Association saw the Deluxe Horses at Arcade Brooklyn and our association picked up a 12-4 road win. That's your third straight win. What games did you pick? In the opening doubles, we went with Whitewater and Total Nuclear Annihilation. Those are good choices. I think that's what we did last time we were there too. Nice. We picked up both those. And in the singles, third rounds, let's see, we had Johnny Mnemonic, Paragon, and a double on Theatre of Magic. Well, that sounds awesome except for Johnny Mnemonic, but I bet that was Alex Kelly. That was Wyndham. Oh! We wound up splitting all of the singles games, but our association swept each of the doubles rounds for that pin. There you go. The Pin Pals hosted the lesser players at Skylark, and the home team got themselves an 11-5 win. That gives them a win after three losses in a row. They stopped the losing streak. The lesser players, unfortunately, are still kind of on theirs. The Pinbots and Intermission Dolores faced off at Commonwealth. It went to a tiebreak and the visiting Pinbots got the win 8-8. That win puts the Pinbots over 500 on the season and even though the eight point victory doesn't really accrue as much to the standings as you might like, it really passes the smell test as a big deal to go somewhere and win in a way tiebreak win. The Mutants went on the road to Rullo's and they beat up on the Aristocrats 12-4. Mutants rebound from their first loss of the season in week 5. Benjamin, your Colliders had a bye week. Restful. Parliament welcomed Balls of Steel to Owl Farm and Balls of Steel took that welcome mat and 10 points home in a 10-6 road win. That is the second week in a row that Balls of Steel, an undefeated team, has beaten another undefeated team. And Barcade Fidei saw a special win late come to town to face Lion Persons. The home team wins 11-5. Lion Persons started slow, but they have two wins in a row now. I mean, some of these teams have played six games, some of these teams have played five games, everyone's played at least five. It seems like it's standings time, that we're only going to play 10. Currently at the top of the standings, Balls of Steel, undefeated at 6-0 with 64 points. The Mutants are 4-1 with 50, while Parliament is 4-1 with 45. And each of those teams were 3-0 and 4-0 in the last two weeks, but Balls of Steel, who's 6-0, just beat them. That's how those three are at the top of the standings. In fourth and fifth place, the two for oners and our New York City Flipper Sport Association are both four and two, but the two for oners have a three point edge at 59 points to our 56. Also at four and two and 56 points, the aristocrats are tied with NYC FSA, except we have the advantage of winning our matchup directly with them. That'd be the top division if it was all said and done today. It's notable, of course, that some of those standings like mutants in parliament are four and one, which means that their record is better than the four and two teams, although they have had a week off and some of the four and two teams have not, obviously. So there's a little bit of sway to what might happen here. Currently sitting at the top of the in-lane playoffs. Both the pinbots and your colliders are 3-2. Pinbots have 39 points, colliders 36. And there's another situation where just like because of the number of games we're in front of these teams, or this team at least. That's right, Intermission Dolores is 3-3 with 46 points. We'd jump in the standings over the pinbots or the colliders should they lose. Although the pinbots just gave themselves the head-to-head tiebreaker against Intermission Dolores last week by the win. Lion Persons are currently at a record of 2-3 with 42 points. And both the pinpals and the deluxe horses are 2 and 4 at 43 and 38 points respectively. And that would round out the in lane playoffs if they were held today. Currently on the outside looking in, the lesser players are 1 and 5 with 34 points. Special when lit is 0 and 6 with 35. Worms are 0 and 5. And we are also presuming, I don't know that this is more than a presumption, you're on I'm not on a captain's email list. I'm not that only the top 12 will play in the playoffs. It is possible. It has happened in the past when there have been 16 or more in a division that there have been eight, you know, eight and eight. So it's possible that what we're talking about here would be shifted slightly by that and that the top seed in one of the divisions would have a buy in this division. It's more likely on Tuesday where there are actually 16 teams so that everyone would just go to the playoffs, it's more likely that it would be a consolation bracket and a championship bracket there. In chats with some of the other captains, we all agree, we'll find out just shortly before it happens. That seems about right. Also at bars all over the city, many of the same bars, and in fact a lot of the same teams in a certain way, kind of play on a Monday night and a Tuesday night, or at least, you know, teams with a few common members. At Rulos, the replays hosted No Quarters for Laundry, and No Quarters picked up a 13-3 visiting win. That's four straight for No Quarters. Everybody Loves the Sunshine hosted Your Butterballers at, well, Sunshine Laundromat, I should hope, since that's, since everybody loves it there, and that's, and they were hosting, I hope that's where they host. They won 9-7. Yeah, and with that win, Everybody Loves the Sunshine creates a tight knot in the middle of the standings. Lot of three and two teams, I think. Yeah. That was a close match. They swept the fourth round to make that 9-7. We went in needing just one, but got zero. Midway saw Schlubbs visiting the third ball, and Schlubbs picked up a 14-2 away win. That's the Shlub's biggest win of the season. Danger Danger hosted Neptune's Treasure at Buttermilk Bar, and Danger Danger bested the Cummers 12-4. Pinister Six went to Barcade Fi-Di where they bested the Trolls 10-6. Every one of Pinister Six's matches this season has either been 10-6 or 11-5, and this is their second win in a row. Was there a troll story? The troll story this week reads, looking for a troll in finance, coin fund, five foot five inches, grand prize, hashtag fideibros, hashtag trolls on top, and in the photos you can see everyone on trolls dressed like a finance bro. Midtown uniform? Yeah. Ball Drainers hosted Harlem Globe Flippers at Jack Bar and the Ball Drainers won 9-7. I talked to George Underwood about this last night. He said that it was heated and when I questioned that, when I was like, really? Like, it's like, it was like, there was real tension. He was like, I mean, everyone were, you know, everyone's good friends. Like, everyone on the two teams are friends with each other, but everybody really wanted to win. Like it was not, it wasn't heated in the way that it was contentious socially, but it was pinball wise. I'm pretty sure that he told me this, I had had a beverage or two and I didn't write it down. So I'm, I think I'm, I think that I am narrating reliably at present. I believe that he said that he played a game against Adam Robinson on Jaws that he stepped up to ball three with like a 280 million point deficit and had a heroic ball three and came up just short. What that like I think what I think the numbers he said were like Adam was just over 300 call it 305 and he was at it was probably more like 302 because I think he said he was just under 300 at like 299 and something but then he plunged an extra ball and won Wow Just knowing that the score was 9 and that in in favor of George team and that was the case that the difference between a tiebreaker or not there and that keeps them undefeated The pin babes went to Barcade Brooklyn where Reston Pinball, parenthetically RIP, lost 7-9. The pin babes pick up their second win on the season. Scrapple Squatch visited Harry's hand grenades and they were probably startled by the noise because the hand grenades won 10 to 6. Hand grenades pick up their first win since their return to the right flipper division. They're a win out of the top 12 and a point behind the trolls who gave them their first loss in week one. All right, it's halfway through in this one. There's no one has six games here because this Bells and Chimes finals was the week that this was originally scheduled to start but there would have been an extra week at the end so it was easy for them to push this one off. And I'm glad they did. That was the right move. But, ball drainers are on top. 5-0. 54 points accumulated on the season. Danger Danger, Schwubbs, No Quarters for Laundry, all are 4-1. Danger Danger has piled on scores when they can and they have 61 points scored on the season. That's seven more than the 5-0 team, by the way. Schlubbs and No Quarters for Laundry have 53 and 51, which is just a couple points behind that 5-0 team. The Globe Flippers and the Butterballers would currently round out the top six, but you remember Eric said that that win by Everybody Loved the Sunshine created a knot in the middle of the standings? I'm going to list the three and two teams right now. Harlem Globe Flippers, Butterballers, Pinister Six, Everybody Loves the Sunshine, Neptune's Treasure. That's five teams are three and two. They are separated by nine points. Globe Flippers have 50, Butterballers 43, Pinister Six 42, Everybody Loves the Sunshine, also 42, Neptune's Treasure 41. So just to put that win in perspective, Everybody Loves the Sunshine came within one point of All of their direct opponent at that time, but also made all of this. Butterballers would have been 4-1 instead of 3-2, made all of this crunch happen with that win. That's pretty cool. Two of those four teams, Globe Flippers, Butterballers, Pinister Six, or Everybody Loves the Sunshine, would be in the next level down in the inlanes, presuming that it's 12 in total in this 16-team division who will go to the playoffs. And they would be joined by... no, three of those teams would go down. And they would be joined by Rest In Pinball, Scrapple Squad, and the Pin Babes as of right now. They are all 2-3 with 35, 34, and 31 points respectively. Trolls and Harry's Hand Grenades have one win each and presumably will not make playoffs. Replays and third ball, you know, if they started today. I don't mean to say that they can't, because they certainly can. A couple of wins turns it all around. They don't have five losses yet. They can still have an above 500 record on the season. It is possible. Replays and third ball are 0 and 5. Best they can do is 500 on the season, but they can do it. It can still be done. On Wednesday, the fourth qualifying week of Scrapple League's second season of the year was held at Scrapple Land in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Directed by Greg Pavarelli, myself, Woody Richman, and Harlan Aidalinda. We had 29 players out for the night, playing five rounds of group match play with IFPA scoring, hoping to get the most points towards our series total. A new player to our league, Tomei Tenesovsky, picked up 29 points, doing that the best this week. Tomé was also, I saw, at the Scrappleland First Anniversary Tournament on Saturday, but I met him for the first time on Wednesday night. Cool. Adam Kane, Woody Richman, and Matt Raz all picked up 27 points on Wednesday, and Jackie, and myself got 25. There were 11 players in the optional side pot. Woody Richman took home the big cash. I mean, there are four meetings, which means that most of these people have a full scorecard. That's right, and currently leading the way in the standings, CJ Smith has 98 points. Sean Grant has 97. Rounding out the top eight, and Dustin Bailey. I just want to point out, look out for Alberto Santana, because that's three meetings worth at 87. And so like when you're like, hey, everybody who's at the top is 98 or 97. Alberto is only 20 points away from you. When he shows up for his fourth meeting, Alberto is there. So you got to work on your score because he's coming for you. The eight B finalists after these four weeks, myself, Dan Merrill and Pat Carawan all have 86 points, just one off the cut line for A. Also, and Mike Pantino. Greg and Mike, both with only three meetings so far. Mike sitting with a nice 69 points at the cut line. And just below the B cut line, and Chris Caffaro are all within striking distance. Caffaro with only two meetings. So if he can show up for all four, he's within striking distance of A at 54. If he doubled up on what he's got, he's at 108 at the end of this. So he might be shooting for A, not for the cut line of B. I'm not saying that these three meeting folks can't also be because, you know, 35 points gets any one of them close in those top eight as of right now. Cafaro's, if he can get to two more meetings, to the last two meetings, I like his chances. On Thursday at Jack Bar, No Bro Presents Thursday Night Strikes had what I believe is its final meeting at 8pm sharp. It was hosted by the GC. 27 players came and I'll give you two guesses who won. Yeah, it was Greg Fertel. He bested Zach Till, Travis Rosenberg, and Nitsan Gabbai. Also on Thursday, South Slope Pinball League had its second qualifying week of their second season at Buttermilk Bar directed by Kate Martin. 24 players came out for five rounds of group match play with IFPA scoring. Rob Wong beat everyone he met that night and got 35 points. Monica Weidekamp picked up 27 and so did Matt Carlson. Jess Warren got 25. The organizer announcement. Everything is broken, I'm sorry. Next week at bars all over the city. On Monday, March 30th. Your NYC FSA has a bye week. No plans. Balls of Steel will host the Aristocrats at Midway. The Aristocrats have lost two straight after winning two straight, and they face an undefeated team. The Pin Pals will go to Gebhard's Beer Culture, presumably, to face the two-for-oners. Why is that presumably? Because it's uptown. Oh, and it's the Pin Pals. And it's the Pin Pals. We Colliders will go to Milo's Yard to visit the worms, and I did enjoy having the week off, I will not lie, but I also am really looking forward to having a week where we go to Milo's Yard. I said at the beginning of the season I wanted to do this sometime this year and when the schedule was first published we weren't supposed to but then the schedule was republished and we got to it was cool we haven't been there for a minute so I'm excited to go to Milo's this week the deluxe horses will host the lesser players at Barcade Brooklyn. Those horsies have, in order, lost twice, won twice, and lost twice. Lesser players have lost five straight. The Pinbots will host Parliament at Scrappleland. Parliament hoping to avoid a second loss in a row. Intermission Dolores will just walk up Fifth Avenue to Rulo's, where Special Wendlit will be waiting for them. Intermission Dolores' loss last week took them below the liminal point between the orbit and the in-lane playoffs, so they hope not to repeat. Special win lit is winless. On Tuesday, March 31st, Pinball NYC's right flipper division will contest its sixth round. The replays will come to Buttermilk Bar to see us butterballers. Replays are still looking for their first win. Butterballers are hosting the team from across the street this week, and they're awaiting hosting the team from across the bar next week. Everybody loves the sunshine and schlubs will face off at Jack Bar. Scrapple Squad goes to solid state in Deep Queens to see no quarters for laundry. I do not envy a team under 500 going to Deep Queens. Penister Six will host Ball Drainers at Skylark. Trolls head uptown to At the Wallace to visit Harlem Globe Flippers. Trolls are on a four-game losing streak. The Globe Flippers had a tight loss against the only remaining undefeated team in the division last week. Neptune's Treasure and The Third Ball will play at Midway. Neptune's Treasure won their first three but have a two-game losing streak going. The third ball is still looking for their first win. Harry's Hand Grenades will play the Pin Babes at Birdies. One of those teams can make a good move toward the bottom of the in-lane playoffs if it's 12th. And Barcade Brooklyn will see Danger Danger come to town to visit Reston Pinball, parenthetically, RIP. RIP is 1-2 at home, and they're facing a 5-1 team there. On Wednesday at Scrapple Land, it's April 1st, but no foolin', it'll be pinball 8 o'clock when the fifth meeting of the second season of 2026's Scrapple League is convened under the direction of Greg Pavarelli with assistance by Eric and Woody Richman and Harlan Aida-Linda. On Thursday at the brand new time of 730 sharp. That's right. No Bro presents Thursday Night Strikes will happen at Jack Bar in Williamsburg. Gabe texted us to make sure we knew. Also on Thursday at pinball 8 o'clock at Buttermilk Bar in South Slope, the South Slope Pinball League's second season of 2026 will have its third meeting under Kate Martin's direction. And on Friday, April 3rd, at 7.30pm, it will be Friday night at the museum, at the Red Hook Pinball Museum. I like the tagline here, the Friday night at the museum, where pinball comes to life. It will be 10 rounds of max match play, with 8 players going to an amazing race semi-finals, and a top 4 to a pop-up finals. Well, they should be starting at 530, not 730. That's directed by Jonah Shlaes. And on Sunday at Single Cut in Astoria at 19-33 at 37th Street. Don't go to 37th Avenue. Or Place. Or Place, or Road, or Court, or any of those things, although most of those happen a little bit farther out in Queens, yeah. But it's, yeah. Avenues, streets, places, roads. It's street, I swear, it's 37th Street in Astoria. Silver Ball Sunday at Single Cut 37 will be convened under Tommy Ortega's capable direction. That's at 3pm. Let's talk about the venues. As of March 27th, 2026, there are 360 pinball machines in New York City at 74 public locations. Thanks to the creators and users of Pinball Mat for this data. Here are machine updates from the past week. On Saturday, F-14 Tomcat was taken out of Sunshine Laundromat. And user Transstrander commented on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at All Might Skate. They said, broken sad face, stuck button. Sad face with a cry. There's a comma. A little tear. Yeah, a little tear. And I sort of agree that because I think that might be the only one that's there. There used to be a Raven there if memory serves. I, the All Night Skate is this, I never made it there, but I think it's this weird place out Myrtle Avenue or something out Broadway maybe, uh, that like is just kind of at the edge of civilized pin, of pinball civilization in New York City that I think has always had a game. When Mary Rose moved from Queens to Brooklyn, All Night Skate was her closest place and she was playing that TMNT a lot. On Sunday, user Upstate Pinball commented on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at All Night Skate. They said, cleaned up a spilled drink that was causing the start button to stick. All set guys, thanks for the reports. Nice. And user Flipper Fiend commented on the Beetlejuice at Scrapple Land game is working properly once again I like the positive ones I like it when someone like hey I talk shit about this game but it all right now I like the positive ones And then on Monday, Flipper Fiend stopped at area 141st and commented on Monopoly. Tilt is pretty tight and volume is pretty low, but otherwise seems to play well. I seem to remember the last time you reported on this game, it was like the operator saying, it's set up, can someone come see if it's like at the right level or whatever? And so I think, you know, someone saying otherwise seems to play pretty well, it's pretty cool. Flipper Fiend also popped into the gutter bar, LIC, and commented on their Cactus Canyon that has the Lyman upgrade. The world pool you plunge into to start a ball seems to consistently yield 50, 000 points and none of the other possible ball start awards. And then Flipper Fiend went to Barcade St. Mark's and commented on their Black Knight sort of rage, The stage plays great, fast, fun, and brutal. And of Toy Story 4, Flipper Fiend said, Bo Peep Ball Lock Not Registering. Balls lock, remain locked until ball search, then get released. Left lane kickback fails 9 times out of 10. Flipper Fiend also noted that Halloween is no longer at Barcade St. Mark's, and there's now an Iron Maiden Pro there. I mean, I like Iron Maiden probably more than Halloween, but I would like for there to be I mean, I imagine it'll just move to another Barcade in a minute, but I, you know, I'd like to see it soon. On Tuesday, user Paragon Princess was at Barcade Brooklyn and said of Scooby-Doo, off. Why is this even here, lol? I was hoping you were going to answer that you played Scooby-Doo, that you chose Scooby-Doo when I asked you, so what'd you play when it was off? Well, apparently, turns out, or at least on Tuesday, but by the next night it was. And user JNS stopped in at Jones Bar in Queens and played their Elvis. They said, playable. Slings are sleepy and plunger is a little soft. Right flipper has a hard time making it up to the upper playfield. Maybe not Steve Ritchie's all time greatest game, but still fun. One play for a dollar. It's a challenge to find a worst thief, which again, it's not a good game. It's not a good thing. On Thursday, Flipper Fiend was at Scrapple Land and let us know that the T2 is turned off and not working. And they commented on Beetlejuice, balls keep getting stuck in a slightly misaligned wire form that returns into the right in lane. And I can say it's not that it's misaligned, but that a couple of welds broke, which makes that return wire form Just completely trap a ball and you can't shake it out. Wow. And on Friday, a mix up of the lineup at Barcade Fideye, King Kong and Elektra were removed. Also, Super Panic Ball was removed from the pinball lineup, which is not really a pinball, by user Arcade. But then user Zeta6742 put it back on the lineup. Or maybe it went the other way around. Right. Tough to know which order it happened, but yeah. But real pinball machines joining Arcade Fidei, a Pokemon Premium, and a 1981 Black Hole. We're gonna have to do a philosophical segment sometime about what a real pinball machine is, I think. I think I'm also I'm a little sad to hear Electra go I'm but also I love black hole and Pokemon you know we need a Pokemon everywhere that there can be a Pokemon I think right now and I think that it will draw some people in if it's in the bigger locations you know is it bullet journal time it is I only have late week entries I will have had over a week Twixt, my last and my, or my next most previous and my previous pinball outings. We spoke last Friday. I don't imagine you played on Friday night after that. No, no. And then on Saturday, as I mentioned, I had considered if I could make it up to the Scrappleland first anniversary tournament. But since I was running South Slope Strikes for chess, I didn't think that was a risk I could take. Yeah, it doesn't seem like this. Jess nicely set me up with a trophy and some cookies to take to buttermilk. The cookies were really good. What kind? There's something called Pimm's, which is like a shortbread with an orange chocolate topping. Oh, yes. Mm-hmm. Very good. And then a brand called Gavotte's makes these crispy crepes. Ah, yeah, sure. And they are really good. I really like those ones. Flaky. Very flaky. Yeah. And then I neglected to give the trophy to the winner, Alex Kelly, but I'll see him again. Yeah, yeah. You'll see him on a Monday night sometime soon, I'm sure. What about Sunday? Well, Saturday night went later than I had estimated. Mm-hmm. And on Sunday, I was not up for making the trek up to Greenpoint to go to the Toppers Queer Pinball Club. So I had to skip that. And then on Monday, NYCFSA was playing at Barcade Brooklyn. And I, of course, like going back there. All of my friends and former coworkers at the place, great to see all of them. And also delighted to see Tim Lawrence was in town for the match. Oh, cool. That was really nice. He and I faced off on a game of 8 Ball Deluxe. Oh, cool. Yeah, he got me there. Uh-huh. Tuesday night, Butterballers went to Sunshine Laundromat. It's a tough match against Everybody Loves the Sunshine. They got us in with the sweep in the fourth round. But, uh, I had a, I had a particularly nice game of space shuttle. I played against, uh, Zach Arnold in, uh, the singles round. Cool. That one felt nice. It was, I mean, you know, it's a, it's a grindy kind of game. Oh yeah. And there's the one thing. Do the thing. Yeah. That's it. And it doesn't score that well. You gotta do it a few times if you want to feel confident you're gonna win, right? For sure. This is, I'm right about this game. It's the one that has the drop target in front of the ramp and then you hit the ramp. Oh yeah, but that's not the thing you should do. No, you should get the top lanes and the spinner. No, you should just, yeah, you should just shoot the spinner and complete the top lanes. Yeah. But, uh, but that's also the defining feature of it is that it has the drop target in the ramp. And, uh, well, there was a similar story on Wednesday at, which is, if you play it the way I do, a similar hit the same shot again and again strategy as Space Shuttle. The jump. You're hitting the jump over and over again. I did hit the jump over and over again to finish up somewhere over a billion and get a first p lace on that game. Right. Because every time you hit the jump, it gives you, I think, five million on the ball or increasing five million on the ball, Plus, 10 million on the bonus for that ball and every ball after it. Word? Yeah. It's a big score builder. It's an easily exploitable thing if you can hit that thing and a magnet's going to help you. At some point in the midst of doing it, in a recovery from a miss, I wound up starting a mode. Yeah. The mode was a dirt car race or something. I don't know, but it was shoot the ramps. So I just continued to shoot the ramp. And so then not only was I getting the ramp value, I was also getting 20 million for every mode shot. And it never seemed to time out. It just kept going and going and going. I think you extend the length of it by hitting the saucer on the far left. Right, but also it might not be counting out during the time that the magnet is pulling it around in the way that it wouldn't count down if it were in pop bumpers, question mark? Maybe. It was also Drizanna's triumphant return to her regular shift on Wednesdays at Scrapple Land. She's been off for a little bit after some surgery on her thumb. Oh, welcome back. Yeah, great to have her back and also to welcome a couple new players. I mentioned earlier, first time meeting Tomei. Nice player and also won the day. It's not an easy place to walk in and just win and then my week ends with Thursday I had been planning on going to South Slope Pinball League but I was just not feeling well and stayed home instead sure sure that's in it so take care of yourself that's the right thing yeah and yeah but in a twist who was out on Thursday night well I was with you hey I was it turns out yeah I found myself I found myself last night with, it's Friday while we're speaking, so Thursday, March 26th is the night I'm talking about. I found myself with time that I had committed to an activity that was no longer quite so urgent. And so I had, you know, some time and like if you're keeping score at home, as I mentioned, you know, I hadn't played since Monday, not this week because we had a bye, but the previous week. I've been playing pinball for over a week and look, the stuff that I'm doing that isn't pinball is too boring to talk about even on a pinball podcast. That's a very low bar, but it's too boring to talk about even in that thing. So I went to the slope. I got on a good long walk because I've been sitting at a desk or standing at a desk a whole lot recently and so I got on a good walk to go to the slope. I planned to play alone. I was sure that there would be a league at Buttermilk Bar and so I was going to go to Rulo's and you know do it do a drive-by of whoever was hanging out outside at Buttermilk Bar when I was walking home or something like that and when I got to the front of Rulo's there was trivia inside that I did not want to be the interrupter of as a pinball player i'm sure that we could have negotiated whatever we needed to negotiate such that i could play i think that bart has told me in the past that he digs that when there's a music event or something going on that there are people playing pinball at the same time that that's sort of the vibe that he wants. But I also, you know, I just didn't want to. That wasn't the vibe I wanted just then. I wanted to put on my headphones and play alone. And if I was going to sing along with Stevie Nicks while I was playing pinball, then I wanted pinball. The fact is, I was actually listening to baseball because it was opening day of baseball season. But I went to the slope. I, after I, you know, knew I didn't want to go to Buttermilk Bar, you know, tried to go to Rulo's and knew I didn't want to go there, I went to Skylark because I figured I'd just go play some Paragon, if nothing else. I, I wanted to leave before league was over. So, you know, I was going to do it. I played alone for a little bit with my noise canceling headphones on. And then George Underwood showed up and he was, you know, also clearly there to like, We fist bumped and both just like put our noise canceling headphones back on and played some pinball. Yeah. And then, you know, ha- absolutely had a couple of conversations, good conversations about pinball strategy, about pinball design, about things related to pinball, and also just, you know, like I told you what he told me about their match on Tuesday night. Uh, that it- and I'm also sure that I've forgotten other things that he told me about their match. I remember that particular thing that he told me because it was personal to him when he was telling me that. That's I was able to connect it. I'm sure he told me other things about it that I've forgotten. But it was it was just interesting to have a really respectful and reasonable, slow paced series of conversations that was sort of one single conversation because, you know, we talked for it. We were not people who went there to see each other and play pinball together. We were people who showed up separately to play pinball alone and were happy to see each other and happy to have a conversation. But like, just the social phenomenon of the way that we interacted was my favorite thing about pinball being my social activity. And also, it's great to see George. George is a great guy. Yeah. And today, Friday, I had the day off and I played a game of Jaws at Franklin Park while I was waiting for my burrito to be fixed down at El Barrio down the street during, you know, the doubly illusory phenomenon of lunchtime. It reminds me, I finally got to play a full game of Pokemon on Wednesday night. Oh, cool. Stuck around a little later, finally. It's been so occupied all the time. Of course. Never actually got to play it. It was fun. George was telling me he loves the way it shoots. That was actually one of the things we talked about was like the games that are great in so much for that. I think it's just a matter of time before we get to the final round of the NYC PPA tournament. So, let's talk about who will advance Last week we announced the winners of round one voting. The way we got here was we did a herb style tournament for the NYC PPA tournament pinball machines in four different eras just like there are 64 college basketball teams that enter the NCAA tournament We have the NYC PPA tournament where 16 in each region pinball machines. We did a herb style tournament for them. Eric gave me 16, Zen gave me 16, I put in my 16. We gave number one on everybody's list 16 points, number two 15 points, all the way down to number 16 on everybody's list got one point. We aggregated the results and seeded 16 actual pinball machines in each region. Those regions are flat screen, DMD, solid state, and electromechanical. We voted last week, it was match play time, we voted 7-5-3-1 for all of these groups. The first groups and only one pinball machine from each group of four got through. So we whittled 64 down to 16 just like they did in the NCAA tournament that weekend. This weekend we're going to whittle those 16 down to four just like they're going to do in the NCAA tournament this weekend. And the way that we did it was once again with IFPA match play type scoring. We each voted for these four games left in each region. And we're going to name one as the greatest pinball machine of all time in that era, at least for right now. And then next week, we're going to vote on that final group and there will be one left standing. In the electromechanical era, the four games that were playing in this group were Argosy, Centigrade 37, Spanish Eyes, and Doodle Bug. That was the number one, the number 12, the number two, and the number three seeds, respectively. After Benjamin and Zen and I scored this with 7531 scoring in our own personal opinions And then aggregated the results. The best machine of the electromechanical era, at least for right now, Argosy goes on to the final four. At no point in time will Argosy not be the top choice of that era, ever. It is the best game of that era. It was close between Spanish Eyes and Doodle Bug and Centigrade 37. I love it. And it apparently had no business in this competition. But it was close between the other two. They were tied for second and only a couple points behind. But Argosy was, I mean, look, it was the top seed. And a top seed gets through a lot of the time in that college basketball tournament, too. In the solid state era, the top seed Harlem Globetrotters, I think I did this two weeks ago. I want to do it too. Yeah. Globetrotters, the Harlem Globetrotters, Harlem Globetrotters on tour. On tour. Yes, to be fair. Faces off against Stargazer, Banzai Run, and Stars. And Stargazer is truly the Cinderella, the 12 seed to get through here. Harlem Globetrotters was the top seed, Banzai Run the two, Stars the three, but Stargazer has been voted through. I just noticed that, that the solid state era was the number one, two, three, and 12 seed, and so was the electromechanical era. That's right. It's interesting. It's almost like I am the only one who remembered a great game in one era and I'm the only one who forgot it in another era. Yeah, it's a little misogynistic. In the theme, like because of the revealing costume of the belly dancer, I'm gonna call her on the back glass? Yep. Very good. In the DMD era, the four games that had advanced into this round were Spider-Man, AC/DC, Theater of Magic, and Tron. The numbers 1, 5, 2, and 6 seeds, respectively. And in this case, Theater of Magic advances to the final four. It is, it was very tight, this one, but Theater of Magic got through. We, I think Eric and I liked Spider-Man a lot, but it was not high on Zen's list. And everyone likes Theater of Magic, right? Who doesn't like Theater of Magic? Stone Cold Classic. Yeah. It's all about getting to the bonus at the end. If you can build it up, that's incredibly important. It was one of the games that really grabbed me in college. I remember playing that a lot. Yeah. And in the flat screen era, last year's champ Metallica Remastered faced off against Jurassic Park, The Big Lebowski, and Deadpool. And Deadpool is going to advance based on a tiebreaker. Jurassic Park and Deadpool were dead even. Each of us had a first, or rather each one got a first, second and third place vote, which is why they were tied. But we went back to how they fared in the previous round to break the tie and Deadpool will get through. And so it will be the representative for the greatest flat screen era game of all time, at least for right now. What do we think about this? So I think Eric and I both were really hot on Metallica last year. I pushed Deadpool through this year because I was infatuated with the graphics and the visuals of Metallica. It was kind of a recreation of the older generation of the game, but it also has better scoring and everything else i went back to deadpool and what really pushes it over the edge for me on deadpool versus metallica is that super duper skill shot thing it's like that's the that you know we talked about it before but that's that's literally the one thing that pushed it over the edge for me MXV the MXV skill shot yeah deadpool's a fantastic game i'm not sorry to see it advance here I'm obviously the one who had it third in the group, but also, you know, I'm a sucker for the Big Lebowski, and I like Jurassic Park a lot, so that's how we got here. I'm also the jerk who had 007's 60th anniversary in this group on purpose and as a high seed. It fared better in the first round than I thought it might since I think I was the only one who really pushed it into the seating at all. But I, you know, I like an older game. Deadpool plays like a new game. But I like how it is yet another game that doesn't have exactly the same layout. So, George Gomez took some of his playfield tricks from some earlier games, but he made them better here and they work and they flow. He's already a flow master and here it really pays off. Yeah, Zen, I mean, I like it. So, with all that said, Eric, what are our four games? Next week, Benjamin, Zen, and I will be assigning points to these four games to determine the greatest pinball machine of all time, at least for right now, from the electromechanical era, Argosy, from the solid state era, Stargazer, from the DMD era, Theater of Magic, and from the flat screen era, Deadpool. That is an interesting group. I love, you know, I love that they're all unique playfield designs. You know, I don't, I agree, it is an interesting group. I don't know where we're going to end up. I think any of those four can win. Certainly, for me, like if I walk into a place and only those four games were sitting there, I would find it really difficult to decide which one I wanted to play first. I'd have someone to pinch me. Right, I mean yeah, exactly. And also I might, like, I think I might tend toward the older ones only because they're the older ones and they're just not as many places as Theatre of Magic and Deadpool are, right? Like, Argosy isn't just everywhere. I might tend toward Argosy, Stargazer isn't just everywhere. I might tend toward Stargazer over the other two only for that reason. But it's not because it's like a vastly superior game. I don't think it's just because I don't see them in the wild as often, you know? Well, I think that that's a good point that we can talk about, we don't see them in the wild, but let's come up with something else that's a differentiator about it. Like, is it the best back glass? Is it the best flow game? Is it the best shot? Is it the best skill shot? Like I was talking about, what is, for each one of these, we need to decide what is the thing that's gonna push it over the top. I also love the idea, yeah, that there's skill shot. Like I love the idea that both of these older games do kind of have something that at least vaguely resembles a skill shot. Like you, it's important to plunge the right power on Stargazer at least. And Argosy, you can build up your bonus a little bit when you plunge. And even though they're older games, they're not technically skill shots, but I think it's cool to note the skill shot element of these older games too. We have a big decision in front of us. So, at the risk of giving up the suspenseful end of who the winner of the bracket challenge will be, I gotta tell ya, it's already a runaway. Wyndham Manning has won. In the first week, Wyndham had nine correct predictions, and also had one correct prediction this week, which was Stargazer. And that is Wyndham's champion. So Wyndham could still have the correct champion. Wyndham got nine points for each of his round one correct predictions. He got two points for his one round two correct prediction and therefore has 11. He can still get three more for 14 if Stargazer wins. Michelle Capobianco, that's Michelle with two L's if you're keeping score at home, will necessarily have come in second because she got six right in the first week and one right last week. She had Theater of Magic coming to the final four. Unfortunately, she doesn't have it winning, so she can't get any more. But six right in the first week, one right in the second week is eight points. Thank you, Michelle, for joining. If you had Theater of Magic as a champion, you would, this would still be, it would still at least be possible for Wyndham and Michelle to tie. Monica Weidekamp submitted a bracket and got seven correct predictions in round one, but unfortunately had none in round two, which means that she has struck out by now. She had every single one wrong in the DMD era and it's rough when you get to that point to think that you're going to get through. That said, she probably made what was a clever decision and had Banzai Run as the champion, knowing my personal affection for that game. I think that was probably a wise choice. And in last place, Rob Adler chose five correct round one winners and none in week two, which obviously means he has struck out. So he has five points in the challenge. Monica has seven. Michelle has eight. And Wyndham has 11 so far and a possible 14. So Wyndham, we're going to find you. I'm probably going to hand off a Harvest pint glass to Eric to hand off to you on a Monday. The NYC PPA Tournament will continue next week and we will name the greatest pinball machine of all time. At least for right now. That's all for this week's pod. I'd like to thank Zen for joining us. I'd like to thank all of the bracket challenge participants. We'll talk a little bit more about how that went next week. Between now and then, if you got anything to say to us, you can leave a comment below. And hit us up at nycpinpod at gmail.com or you can leave us a voice message at speakpipe.com slash nycpinpod. You can always find the blog at nycpinpod.wordpress.com. Next week, we'll do those things we usually do in Balls 1 and 2. And in Ball 3, we're going to announce the greatest pinball machine of all time, at least for right now. And we'll also induct Wyndham Manning along with that pinball machine into the NYC Pinpod Awesomeness Archive. Between now and then, whatever you're up to, go get em, pinpod.
