## Analysis

Danny from Bug's Scream and Stream showcases a custom Led Zeppelin-themed homebrew pinball machine built by Roto Dave, a retheme of a 1976 Bally Freedom EM machine. Dave explains his design philosophy of creating a machine that looks period-authentic to 1976 (despite Led Zeppelin never having an official pinball), with artwork by Brad Albright, custom audio board for Led Zeppelin songs, and gameplay focused on spinner and wheel mechanics. The hosts play multiple games, discussing the technical challenges of homebrew creation, the 300+ hours required for playfield development, and design decisions like keeping chimes alongside modern audio.

### Key Claims

- [HIGH] This game was originally a Bally Freedom from 1976, one of the last EM games Bally made, purchased for $150 — _Roto Dave directly states this early in the video as the donor machine foundation_
- [HIGH] Brad Albright (who also did Motorhead game artwork) created all the artwork with a black and white 1976-era aesthetic — _Dave credits Brad explicitly and describes the visual design philosophy_
- [HIGH] A custom board with SD card was built by Jeremy to wire music triggers into score player and tilt lights, with 7 functions total and individual Led Zeppelin songs per player — _Dave describes the custom audio board implementation in detail_
- [HIGH] The entire homebrew project took approximately 300 hours, compared to 300+ hours just on whitewood shooting/playfield layout for Dave's new unreleased game — _Dave compares project scope and explicitly states these timeframes_
- [HIGH] Dave has been working on pinball machines for 30 years — _Dave states this directly when discussing his playfield design experience_
- [HIGH] Maximum bonus on this game is 15, same as Wizard and Captain Fantastic, but can be doubled to 30 — _Danny and Dave discuss bonus mechanics during gameplay_
- [HIGH] The game uses EM (electromechanical) base so no electronics had to be built from scratch, limiting what can be done but avoiding extensive electronic work — _Dave explains this as a key reason for choosing an EM donor machine_

### Signals

- **[community_signal]** Collaborative ecosystem in homebrew pinball: designer (Roto Dave), artist (Brad Albright), audio engineer (Jeremy) combining expertise; demonstrates established networks of specialized skill-sharing in homebrew community (confidence: high) — Dave credits both Brad and Jeremy multiple times, indicating these are established collaborative relationships in the homebrew community
- **[product_concern]** Significant time investment barrier to entry for homebrew creation: 300+ hours for experienced designer (30 years) just on playfield whitewood/layout work alone, suggesting ground-up projects are impractical for most enthusiasts (confidence: high) — Dave states: 'just to get that shooting the way I like it, it's been nearly 300 hours of work to just to get a shooting white wood going... I've got a fair idea of what I'm doing' and contrasts to ~300 hours total for the retheme project
- **[design_philosophy]** Dave's personal philosophy against electronic sounds in EM-era machines: prefers keeping mechanical chimes as authentic aesthetic choice even when adding modern audio capabilities (confidence: medium) — Dave says: 'I didn't always think that um like an em playing um electronic sounds is a a bit stink myself, but call me traditionalist.'
- **[design_philosophy]** Period-authentic design approach: creating a machine that appears to be from 1976 even though Led Zeppelin never had an official pinball, blending modern capability (audio) with vintage aesthetics (chimes, artwork, color scheme) (confidence: high) — Dave explains: 'let's make a machine but make it look like it came out in 1976 as if there was a real Led Zeppelin... all handdrawn artwork and very much rift on that theme from the you know mid70s pinball machines'
- **[design_philosophy]** Roto Dave deliberately chose EM donor machine to avoid complex electronics work, demonstrating a pragmatic approach to reducing scope for retheme projects vs ground-up builds (confidence: high) — Dave explicitly states: 'one of the reasons I hadn't was because of the electronic side of things. So, by using an EM machine, I didn't have to do any electronics.'
- **[personnel_signal]** Brad Albright established as specialist pinball artist with multiple notable retheme/game projects (Motorhead, Led Zeppelin) bringing consistent visual identity to homebrew and boutique work (confidence: high) — Dave credits 'my friend in Texas, good friend Brad Albright, he came on board and did all the artwork for this as he did for the Motorhead game as well'
- **[technology_signal]** Custom SD card-based audio board enabling per-player Led Zeppelin song triggers and game sound effects integrated with EM switching, representing boutique audio enhancement approach for homebrew projects (confidence: high) — Dave describes: 'My good friend Jeremy uh designed a board which I wired into the um score player lights and the tilt lights... we've got a little SD card in there... when the lights in the backboard go on uh it'll trigger this trigger the MP3.'

## Transcript

Hi and welcome to another Danny teaches. I'm Danny and I am joined by the pinball machine, Led Zeppelin, designed by our special guest, Roto Dave. Woo! And I am also joined to show off this gorgeous game by extra special guest, my partner, Andrew. Yeah. Yeah. Say hi, Andrew.
Hi, everyone.
And he's here.
All right. Now, I think that because it is his game, Davo should step up for ball for the first game. Player one. Game one. Does that sound good?
Let's pop it in.
All right. Three players were in. Let's go, Davo.
Thanks, Danny. So, uh, a quick couple of things about this game. So, this game uh originally was a Belly Freedom from 1976, one of the last of the EM games that Belly made. So, um I picked up this game for 150 bucks. And uh it was pretty had it. And I I've always wanted to do a rethe, but one of the reasons I hadn't was because of the electronic side of things. So, by using an EM machine, I didn't have to do any electronics. So, that was good. Obviously, that gives you some uh limitations of what you can do with it. you have to use all the bits that are inside the game, but that didn't stop me doing a few things uh to the playfield. So, that um this area down here is new. Added another pop bumper. Uh added the skill shot over here and then changed a little bit of the geometry, but uh a lot of what John Youssi is still belly freedom. Um my friend in Texas, good friend Brad Albbright, he came on board and did all the artwork for this as he did for the Motorhead game as well. So, um, as you can see by the, uh, by the visuals. Brad did a excellent job. Again, just a black and white aesthetic. Um, Danny will put up a photo later, but the cabinet's white, uh, with black artwork on. So, we very much designed it to look like it came out from 1976, as if, as you can see on the back glass, it says B Leed Zeppelin, cuz we want, what we tried to do was make there was never a Led Zeppelin pinball. So my design brief to me and Brad was um let's make a machine but make it look like it came out in 1976 as if there was a real Led Zeppelin. So we've got um all handdrawn artwork and very much rift on that theme from the you know mid70s pinball machines and uh the amount of people have come up to me playing this machine and said I've never seen one of those before and oh okay there's a good reason for that. So, what we've got here is um the basic freedom game is very much works around the wheel. Um the wheel is spun by the spinners and pretty much everything on the playfield. Every time you get some points, the wheel moves clockwise. To collect the wheel value, you either have to get it in that whole layer or the hole up the top or the outlanes. And that'll give you whatever's on the wheel. So, at the moment, the wheel is lit for 5,000 points. So, that's a good chance to do my short plunge skill shot, which is a little bit trickier than it looks. You got to try and get it in there. Hopefully fall into the hole. And if it does, you get 5,000 points. If it doesn't, which it probably won't there, you get nothing. But we can. So, this game here, um, spinners can be literally normally they're only 10 points, but if you can, uh, get light spinners from the, um, from the wheel, they'll go up to 100. Uh, the the games on five balls. So, woo. Uh, five balls. The maximum that can go a spinner can go up to is 100. If you put the game on to three balls, you can get a thousand of spin, but we prefer fireball on this game. Um, yeah. So, basically that's about it. Try and get some spinners and um get some drops to get some bonus and uh collect all the wheel values.
Go for it, Danny.
All right, we are so back. I feel like Ro Dave's a better host than I am most of the time. Anyways, that's okay. Let's jump in. I always try and go for the top uh oo top saucer there cuz it's safer. But apparently not today. Andrew.
Andy's here.
Andy's here.
I will try and go for that Ro Dave special skill shot. Right. So, the other thing that's built into this game, which isn't on display now for copyright reasons, is that we built a special board. Uh my good friend Jeremy uh designed a board which I wired into the um score player lights and the tilt lights. And I think we've got seven functions all together. So, we've got a little SD card in there. And we can um when the lights in the backboard go on uh it'll trigger this trigger the MP3. So every uh every player's got their individual song. Lead that one song. Lead Zeppelin song obviously. Um and when you when you tilt it goes w and um and when you drain it plays in my time of dying. So that's quite cool. But we haven't we've got that turned off at the moment cuz otherwise we'll get flagged. So uh yeah. Davo understands the YouTube copyright system. Um, but isn't this game just so cute? Uh, especially when you can get the, uh, sources going. But, uh, I just love all of those chimes. Very fun. Now, what I want to try and do here is get double bonus and or spin a lit. Uh, spinner light is always the best one. Um, but honestly, any thing is a good thing, so I'll take it. Love the spinner noises. Nothing better than getting the spinner there. Oh, nothing better than drains. Come on, Andy. Andy's here back.
All right, let's send it right up the top today. [Music] Heat. Heat.
Andy there maxing out the bonus. So like a lot of these the bellies of this era, maximum bonus is 15. Uh same as Wizard and Captain Fantastic. U but of course you can double it. So it gives you 30. So that's uh really the aim is you can do that. The double bonus is nice. I haven't played it for a little while. I forgot to see what Oh, see the double bonus there. So it's good. The actual um the collect on the side here is really tight shot because you got to really when I put the pop bumper in I made it so you really have to graze that pop bumper to get in there. As you can see I missed it by 2 in. Oopsie. That was a good shot. That was a bad shot and I got punished. So that lovely.
All right. telling you, I gave Andrew all of my good pinball juju. So, I'm just trying to, you know, get the scraps now. Uh, like by how I overplunge every time I put the ball into play, but that's okay. Uh, let's do it. Let's do it. Love it. I, you know, the drop targets, are they worth much? No. But are they satisfying to get down? Yes. So many 10p pointer switches. Oh, disappointing. You know what? Getting those drops drop by drop. Wow. Wow. Wow. There we go. [Music] Wow. Fantastic noise. Oh, I love a good spinner moment. Nice little nudge. Ah. Hey, I'll take it. Nice little flip there. Oh, come on. Come on. Oh, there you go. There you go. Come on. Full bonus. So much hot pops action. [Music] Nothing better than a game where you don't have to actually do anything. It does it all for you. Yeah. There we go. Finally got the spinners lit. Oh my gosh. Took long enough, huh? I'm coming for you, Andy. [Music] Almost didn't come for you there, Andy. Woo. Come on. Oh, lame. But you know what? Got some points on the board. All right, Andy. Show how it's done. Andy,
good bonus. Good bonus.
Andy's here.
Andy's here.
Normally it would be going down the left. Been a long time since I rock and rolled. All right, here we go. I'll just go for the plunge for the lamest of all awards there, but hey, well, let's take it when we can get it. So, yeah, it's very hard to go for. So, what I my design uh philosophy with with this was to try and keep it, like I said, era specific, which is why it still has the chimes. Normally, it'll have the chimes and the lead zeppelin music. So, you got the music, you can turn the music on and off. Just plays through a uh MP3 player up on top, but you've always got the chimes there. So I didn't always think that um like an an em playing um electronic sounds is a a bit stink myself, but call me traditionalist. Right, here we go. Let's get something going. Double bonus. So let's now that I know that I got double bonus, let's try and get get some bonus so we can double it. That sounds like a good idea. Sound like a good idea, Andy?
Sound like a good idea, Dean.
That sounds good to me. Let's not Let's not
Let's hit something. Not those.
Double bonus, though.
Oh, yeah. Almost tilted it, too. Oh, better than nothing.
All right. All pretty close to the moment. Look at that. Let's go. Yeah. [Music] All right. Also, another super secret pinball club favorite. Uh, everyone always loves a bit of lead zeppelin action. Oh, come on, Andrew. It's your chance to roll it. I believe it. Believe in you, Andrew.
I believe it.
Two balls to go. Let's Let's send it.
Hold on. Oh, there we go, Andy.
There we go. I'll I'll stop kicking the camera soon. Okay.
Oh, he's in the lead. Look at him go.
So, yeah. So, back on to the theming thing. So, lots of people want to do a um a home brerew or something, and this is an ideal way for you to start if you haven't really done one before. Actually, creating one from just a blank piece of wood, an empty cabinet, and from from blank is like it's almost impossible. So, I wouldn't recommend you try that. It's much better just to pick up some old dunger. Preferably something that's really screwed. Um, ideally, if you're not super pinball mechanically able, just try and get something sort of rough, but something that works. And then you can have a muck around with that cuz at least it's working. You know that, you know,
doing all the uh yeah, doing all the electronics and everything is to be honest, it's well above most people's pay grade. So, um I can tell you um you know for a fact my new my uh new game that no one's seen yet. Um just to do the layout on that, just shooting whitewood with all the ramps built and everything like that. And I know what I've been I've been working on pinball machines for 30 years. So I've got a fair idea of what I'm doing. But um just to get that shooting the way I like it, it's been nearly 300 hours of work to just to get a shooting white wood going. That's no artwork, no inserts, no nothing. Just couple of flippers, all the flippers working um only. And uh it's a lot of work whereas something like this um this whole project here probably took 300 hours. So, a lot easier to do something like this if you want to do something for your first project. So, that's what I'd recommend. Words of advice.
Very nice. Some pinball wisdom there for you. But couldn't have done it without Brad or Albbright,
of course.
All right. Now, ah, let's try and roll it so that I beat out Andy. All right. Ah. Can't shoot the spinner for days. Oh, what's up with that? Oh,
unlucky.
Finally. Come on in.
Time for a roll.
Life's games.
See if I can roll it. I'll try. I won't kick the camera.
See if I can roll it. Optimistic.
Optimistic. Hey, anything's possible.
Yeah, that's true. Hey, taking the win. Oh,
good boy.
Well done, Andy.
Oh, so close to rolling it.
14. Let's have another go, Danny.
Another game. Do you want me to start up?
You can start this one, Danny.
All right, let's do it. Very good. All right, here we are again. Game two. In we go. I'm still going to fail by always uh plunging for the top one instead of just going for the bottom one. But you know what? That's okay. At least we're straight into it, you know. Double bonus straight away there. Oh, pops action. Leash go. [Music] So now what we really want is the three advanced bonus. But I'm sure we'll get there. Or is it going to sink into that? Oh, it didn't score the wheel value. Sometimes it likes to sneak around that little a 5,000. I'll take it. Andy, do you want to go second? Show them how it's done. Show them how it's done.
Oh, you kindly left it on the 5K for me. I might just go for that if I can.
Wow.
Oh, if I can get it up there.
Don't Don't tell us about your medical.
Oh, should have gone soft plunge. That's what happens. I haven't played the game for a while. Oh, nice shot. All those juicy all those juicy 10-pointers.
You notice two pop bumpers are lights are out because old pinball. Am I right?
He was like, "Do you want me to fix them before we start?" And I was like, "I'm not moving the cameras all back. We are going in." But um you get you can see the nice artwork on them at least. Even better. Oh, and if they were lit up, not quite enough to get it up there. Oh, drip once again. Disappointing. Oh, [Music] I don't know how I've become the drops person today, but uh I am apparently loving that drops life. All right, come on, Pops. Don't fail me now. Pops and drops, boys. [Music] Oh, you know, as I always say, just keeping it alive, that's the best you can do. You know, actually shooting stuff, that's good, but keeping it alive, even better. All right, there we go. Oh, come on, Pops. Leash go. Not quite. Not quite this time. Oh, thank you physics for saving me there. Oh, all right. I love hitting a good post on these games, you know. Love love not hitting an active switch. That's always my favorite thing to do. Ah, wa. There we go. Get it going. Nice. There we go. Got some stuff going on now. Have I got the spinners lit? No. But am I having fun? Yes. Oh, come on. 5,000. Let's go. And on 5,000, mate. Let's get that skill shot.
Let's go.
Not quite. Too much. Just enough.
Very nice.
That's more points than my first ball. Heat. Heat. Good boy. Good.
Much better. Much better.
Left it on the 5K for you, mate.
Oh, yeah. Let's uh see if we can do a skill shot. Not a skill knot.
Put it on a shirt.
Ah, don't take your flippers off your buttons.
Buttons off the flippers.
The buttons off the flippers. There we go. Oh, hang on. Like any good em. Let it go and have another go. No switch hits means have another go.
Ah, stool jips. Oh, it's very tricky. That's why it's called a skill shot. It's also called a luck shot. Double bonus. Yes, please. Let's get some points. Please give me give me give me give me give me give me give me give me give me give me. Up you go. Ah. Knowing that I got the double bonus up, I want to get some drops for bonus. More drops. More bonus.
I'm happy with that.
Good boy.
Yeah, catching up there. Nice.
All right, let's go, shall we? Come on. Double. Oh, a 5,000's lip. I never risk going for that uh weird side collect shot. If I get it, I get it. But I'm always uh as I you know, as I said, always go for the top one. Ah, snuck in that little stand up there. The little advanced bonus stand up. I'll take it. Any bonus is good bonus. Just don't tilt. There we go. See, I told you I'll get it if I accidentally get it, but I never try to on purpose. Spinners are lit. Let me just like not get any spinners from here on out in this fall. That's going to be real choice. choices, bro. See, I told you, mate. As soon as you light the spinners, you don't get any. There we go. I got a couple. Nice. Whoop. Wait. Little sneaky save there. I'll take it. Oh, mate. Shoot the shoot the spinners. Too much. Too much drop. Too much drop. Not enough spin. It's called Le Zeppelin, not Leoplin.
all righty. Let's just send it.
Full send, Andy.
A collect bonus.
Collect bonus.
If in doubt, collect bonus. All right. What's the state of play? What this one? All right, let's get some hot collect action going. What would really would be cool now would be a double bonus if I can get it. Yeah. Double bonus action, please.
So close. Yeah. No.
There we go.
There we go. Now we go. So, we got 12 13. Let's get up to max. Uh-oh. Yeah, max bonus. That's good. So, now we can't do any more with the bonus, but we can happy with that. So, 30,000. Bit of luck. Should be right up Danny's. [Music] Hey, two balls to go though.
Amazing.
We might see over the top.
Let's do it. Full send, Andy. Full send. Full send. [Music] A sad spinner rip there. 5K though. I'll take it. [Music] Have you ever seen so much triangulation in play? All right. Back on. Back on. Back on. Boil. Man, that that was so mid. I don't want to be mid. I want to be full full send. I'm telling you, as soon as those spinners are lit, it's like the magnets pull them away from it. Terrible. Terrible, mate.
Hey, we rolled it. Got to roll. Got to roll. [Music] Oh, so many not spins, but just like Loki spins. All right, here we go. There we go. Juicy. Finally. Oh, I'll take it. We rolled it. Come on, Andy. You know you've only got 70,000 till you roll it, mate. I believe.
Come on, Andy. Get that double bonus.
Let's Oh, let's get it.
We believe you can roll. Sausage roll. So, as you can see in the artwork in the back there, Danny uh this used to say over the top when you got a uh when you got 100,000, but this one we changed it to well or Brad changed it to. This was his idea. Um you get the uh your character light. So the four symbols there and it says player one rock and roll, player two rock and roll. So you don't over the top this game, you rock and roll this game. So some very clever thinking by Brad there.
All right, come on. Let's double roll. Let's have like a moral victory, Andrew. A moral victory is where you've rolled the game and then you roll past someone's score. Um, the moral victory. Oh, I mean, I was gonna say the moral victory can go both way ways though. So, Andrew has in theory moral victory me because he's got more points on the board than me. If you don't look at my Zo,
all righty. Come on, Zo. Come on. Let's go.
Let's go, Zo.
There's no Zo. He ain't no zoo.
Hey, last ball.
Good work. Yeah. Come on, David. Last ball. Cracky. That snuck up on me. Right. So, I need uh 14 to roll it. 5k's lit. Let's see if I can check. Oh, that was a bit hard. Yeah.
Uh-oh. Right. Let's go. Let's go, mama. Oh, a few more of those, please. Oh, she choked. Up you go, buddy. That double bonus will be nice. Now, uh, what do we got? 90. Got to get 30,000 to catch up. Should roll it [Music] under control. What do we got? Light spinners on there. Let's get a th000 bonus. And a five. Oh, that'll help. So, I got five. Now, if I can jam that. Like I said before, that shot into that saucer is really tough, but sometimes you can Oh, almost. That's about as close as you get without getting it in there. Old as Robert Plant to myself.
Oh, saves. What saves?
Double bonus.
Double bonus.
Hey.
Hey. Uh, can go for light spinners. Double bonus. That's 14. Oo. Oh, bad plunge. Not going to get the ball back. Right. Get that drop, please. Uh-oh.
Did you get it?
I think so.
Closecores.com was also
there's also
Zo.
Well, is that it for us then?
One more.
One more. What? It takes all. Andrew, your turn to start.
I'll go play three. Dave, play two. Throw it. Light it up.
Yeah. [Music]
Good luck.
Thank you, bro.
Good luck, Andrew.
Thanks. Thanks.
Andrew's here.
Andrewy's here. Oh,
don't ask me what I was doing.
Not Say it again.
Not I'm going second. Yeah.
Yeah. Are you going Zoro?
I'm No. No. I'm not Zoro. I'm that I'm that second. Whatever that second thing is. Not zoo.
Andy's going zoo.
Zo.
give that saucer a whole lot of love. Am I right?
Woo!
You've been fallen. I take the button off the flipper. So sore.
All right, I'm going to go for top and I'm going to hope that I get a switch and then the Oh, no. I want I want the 5K. I want to get a good start. A
no.
Oh, I'm still ahead of you. just
Andy's very excited to be taking the lead here ahead of me by uh 100 points.
It's on like spinners. So, let's just see if I can get that. This is awesome.
Oh, robbed double bonus. Yes, please. I'll have a bit of that. I'll have a whole lot of that. Got a whole lot of that. Got a whole lot of nothing. Get in the hole.
Hey, mama. Hey, mama. Thanks, mama.
Hey. Hey, mama.
Hey, mama. Give me a double bonus.
Going to make you going to make you train. How many more um lead references can we put into this? Um
I have to give it some thought.
Yeah. Yeah.
All right. One drops. Come on, Andy.
Andy's horn up.
Andy's up.
Andy's heated.
Andy's here. You've been plunging [Music] a whole lot of dreams.
Oh,
you spoke that into exist.
You've been missing every ball that's been firing at you. I thought
this game [Music] This game might be Andy's last stand.
Awesome.
This is awesome.
This is awesome.
All right, let's uh only got, you know, 40k to catch up to Daveo. Hey, got the 5k in the top. Saw bit of it. Wow. Zo. Ready for this comeback, guys?
Yeah.

It'll be a real celebration day.
Oh. Oh. Ramble on.
Wow. Wow. Good one. That was my go. Okay.
I was like, where you going?
I'll ramble on over here. Ramble on. Got to plunge my balls into the hole. Ramble on. Sing my song. Shoot the hole again and again.
Oh, let's go.
Let's go. Let's get this meaningless award. What am I doing? Advancing bonus.
This meaningless award.
Cleaning holes. Hey, advanced bonus is never meaningless. Anything is good. All right. Oh, what's going on here then? Flip light spinners so that I can't shoot any spinners. Oh, straight down the side. Oh.
All right, Andy, finish off nicely, Andy.
No spinners there.
Oh, thanks for clarifying.
Andrew, did you know?
All right. 87,000 points to roll it. Let's go. Before you start, did you know that there are no spinners down there?
No spinners down there.
Cool.
Just want to make sure you knew.
Thank you. Need to Yeah, better tell them now.
Find out later. 5,000 on the way out though.
That's good. Right. What I got? 5,000 since I've been plunging you.
A. So good. Wow.
I got thousands. Oh yeah. War mama. Right. Chance for a double bonus here. This is a added bonus. Right. What we got? Double bonus would be nice, but I can't get it from here. Can't do that. Right. bonus is going up nicely. really want a nice double bonus would be cool about now. We're about 72. That's nice. So, we got uh seven. What do we got on there? Double and can't get it from here without some trickery. Oh. Oh, it's really good when it drains and gives you double bonus, but it didn't on that.
All right. Well, I think Davo's full cleared the game, but I'll uh give it my best shot. Give him a run for his money.
Hit me with your head.
That's not a Led Zeppelin song. AO. Hey, that's all right. Good job, D.
