## Analysis

George from Don't Panic Flip, a beginner pinball player documenting his journey to improve, plays multiple games on Star Wars Premium Edition by Stern. He discusses the game's evolution (poor initial software, barren playfield improved with Hyperloop), demonstrates various shots and techniques (backflips, modes like Endor and Death Star), and repeatedly fails to complete the Death Star multiball while working on skill development. The episode showcases beginner-level play with commentary on game mechanics, strategy, and the learning process.

## Transcript

Alright, let's see if we can get this shit going. And it might fix that camera. Let's take a look. Cool. Ah. This is Don't Panic Flip. Yes, that's a reference to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. This camera is mildly crooked. Don't mess with that. and pinball kind of a, I guess a sort of a portmanteau regardless this show is all going to be documenting the process of going from awful pinball player to hopefully mediocre pinball player, I don't want to say a good pinball player because I've seen those guys and they are amazing, that's never going to happen but I'd like to be able to hold my own in league play or who knows maybe a tournament at some point that's the goal at the same time you're probably going to get to see a bunch of other novices play like drinking like playing pinball like listening to music and and I happen to have a couple of pinball machines here really getting into the sport just started and looking forward to a lot more play time so there's the introduction welcome I'm George and we're going to be playing Star Wars Premium by Stern. I know this game got a lot of flack. Initially, the software was absolutely awful. On the pro versions, the playfield is quite barren. The playfield really doesn't change, but they introduced the Hyperloop, along with the couple of other toys spread out onto the field. Honestly, the more time I spend on this game, the more I absolutely love it. then again I'm a confessed noob when it comes to pinball so I honestly what do I know enjoy it hopefully if you're watching this you'll enjoy it as well let's get this thing started Wow lots of cameras all right let's see let's see what we can do here hopefully the music and volume, hopefully everything's all working correctly. I guess what I'd like to do is work on a few different shots. I like to focus on a backflip, which is where you kick the ball out a little bit, let it roll up to the top of the flipper, and then once it gets there, you hit it a second time. That allows you to kick it back further than you normally could by just trying to hit it backward, or just trying to do a quick backwards hit. So I'd like to focus on that if at all possible, and at the same time it'd be great if we could blow up the Death Star. I think the easiest way to do that is with Han, who starts with two of the Endor missions completed. So let's give that a go. We're gonna light the Endor missions. Alright, we're gonna catch it. Missed it. There we go. Alright. Second try is always the one. We've gotta make eight shots. All the green ones. Four and then four. That irritating beeping noise. Do-do-do. That is me about to run out of my multipliers. This game is all about multipliers. All right. Nope. Should have done the backflip right then. That would have been a good opportunity, right? Yeah, let's do it. Nope. Wow, that was awful. I've actually got these lanes dropped to the easiest mode. Kind of hard to see. I know this is, what, 1080p? At 4K you could probably zoom in and catch it, but just trust me, both lanes are opened up to the easiest mode. So what do we want here? It doesn't hurt to work on TIE Fighters. But now we've got to hit the TIE Fighter. Let's focus on that. There it is. Alright, so we've got 23 TIE Fighters At 35 we'll hit a multiball That was awful This is disgusting We're going to go ahead and go for TIE Fighters again I'd like to crack 100 million at least This is fairly embarrassing But that's why we're documenting becoming better, not being awesome. If you want awesome, go check out Jack Danger, Bowen. Jeez, who else? Yeah, you can watch Bowen kick some ass on some TNA. That's awesome. If you want to watch somebody suck, don't panic flip. You'll see a lot of panic flips. There we go, 41 million. That's a great start. I'm not quite that bad. I mean, I'm not good, but I'm not 41 million bad. Let's try this again, shall we? Endor missions. It's a great start. There we go. Nice and easy. Right up the left ramp. Left ramp is easy in this game. Right ramp is a little bit harder. We're going to knock out the shield generator. So four green shots to unlock the door. Four green shots to finish the mission. There's one. There's two. And there's... right down the middle. Probably should have saved that. Probably could have saved that pretty easily. There's all five million. I can't believe I got the save. Speaking about saves... Alright. There's another green shot... Man, that Death Star shot is tough. You can backhand it... Not hard enough. Let's save that multiplier before it goes away... Missed it. So Mystery's alive. We still need to make a few more Death Star shots. Missed it. And we're about... Oh, I think we saved it. We were about to run out of our multiplier. Alright, so let's... Oh my gosh. There it is. Now the... Actually, we've got a bunch of shots. There's one. Two. I'm guessing we've got two more. Damn it. We'll take a mystery. So I think we've still got to make these three shots over here to the left. I think we only need two more to complete the mission, which is going to complete Endor. Wow, that was a good stop. And allow us to initiate battle for Endor and Mulchiball. There it is. Oh, man. So something I've learned is the spinner, an entire setup on the left there, will stop the ball dead. And that seems odd to me. I have a new spinner I have yet to install. Actually, I don't understand how I'm supposed to install it. All right, so I'm at 28 TIE Fighters, and you can see that just to the right of my score. In yellow, it says the number 28 there. Can you actually see that? Meh, probably could do with this guy being a little bit closer. I apologize. We're going to figure this out really quick. Oh, what just happened? Did we just accidentally add somebody new? Nope. Nope. Alright, so we're a little bit closer now. Luckily that's not in. Okay. Yeah, that's a little bit better. What the hell just happened? I still have a... I am clueless as to what just happened in my game there. Oh, if you hold start long enough, does it reset? I'm trying it. Nope. So that's a dead flip when you let it hit one side nice and easy. That was a nudge. Not just the nudge with me hitting it, but a nudge pass. and if you're ever looking for how to learn the names of those shots check out Deadflip's website that's another nudge pass on his website he has an amazing set of animated gifs that literally walk you through what all of those shots are it's couldn't ask for anything better like it's way nicer oh uh uh way nicer than actually having to try and find images of all their a video of all that like the gifts just are time saving i really am about to lose this multiplier Oh, I kept it! Holy crap! So this is a good opportunity for a backflip. Nope, that ended up being a pass. Gonna save the multiplier. Got it. Alright, so now we're going to go left. Dammit, lost the multiplier. Wow, that just stopped it. There we go. So I think somehow, whatever happened, I have no idea what happened in my game. I thought I was in the middle of a game. But apparently I have Leia right now. I'm gonna go right in there. Nope. Oh that was that opportunity to backflip Death Star Okay I mean that was blinking and flashing long enough really Uuuh, uuuh, ahhhhhh! This game is frustrating. I don't know if you noticed. Uhh... Be consistent. I got nothing against Leia. Got the ball safe. Very nice. Very nice. Easiest shot in the game is the left paramed. You'll see that happen a lot in this game. I have yet to figure out what to do about it, but you can get the ball moving very quickly, and you can then hit the ball, and it will jump up and over the flipper when you do so. That's very frustrating, because you're typically on a roll when that happens, meaning you've got the ball moving nice and quick. I've got a lot of active shots here. Why not kill two birds with one stone? Let's hit the Death Star, and not going to get there. and try and initiate hyperspace hurry up. That's just awesome. Missed it. There it is. Two, three, four. We got a four times multiplier. That's because I lost it while... while hyperspace hurry up is active. That's frustrating. Okay. What do I need? I need to backhand. And... Really? Oh my gosh. You saw me. I hit that perfectly. I can hit that shot. I don't know what's going on with it. I really need to mess with that. Alright, so what do we got? We've got Han. The escape from Boba Fett's kind of cool. So, we just need to hit all of these shots that are white. And actually, I don't know if you need to hit them all. Oh wow, that's just laziness on my part. Kind of not paying close enough attention. Probably need more people. That's always the solution to the problem. So what's cool about this is that if we can hit this shot, we initiate hyperspace multiball. Just like that. Like it's easy, man. It's a cakewalk. So now what we want to do is not let that happen. At least we've got to shoot again. But if we can hit that shot again, I hit everything but the shot. We'll add another ball to the mix. Oh my god, I never hit the mystery so many times. So, lost the multiball, of course. That's wonderful. Okay, we get video mode. Let's hit that. So right now you use the flippers to move the middle button. Makes you go faster. And the goal is to pass as many of these as possible without hitting any. And that's how you get the most points. I hit a bunch right there. That sucks. So I passed 208 asteroids, I had the best streak of 178, I would have gotten a perfect bonus if I had not made that one mistake. Check this out. Wow, I have a lot of options here for mode start. We definitely want to hit... is it green? Is this Han or is this Leia? Oh, yeah, I guess we want to do Death Star. Not Hoth, that's not helpful. Yes. Escape the Death Star. Three inner loops, then shoot an orb. All right, there's our multiplier. We're at 24. So we've got to hit three inner loops. There's one. Two. Two. We maintained... We just need one more and we maintained our multiplier. God bless America. Okay, there's three. I think it restarts because I ran out of time. There's that. Now we just need an orbit. it. Lost our multiplier, and lost the ball. Good stuff. So, what went wrong there? Um, I just missed my shot, and failed to maintain. Let's let the escape from Boba bet again. I wouldn't mind showing that. That way this episode won't be a complete waste. There's one. I guess we can knock out the... I should have passed. Damn it. There's the first time I've ever wanted to pass a mode. You see that, and you think, eh, why would somebody want to pass a mode? Well, there you go. You wanted to work on a different one that was already active. Fuck. Felt like a pretty solid game. Only 300 and some odd million. Yeah, I mean, if you're decent at this game, you should be able to clear a billion easily. And that's all with just multipliers. Yeah. Good song. Who's this? Oh Joy by Todd Teje. Alright. What time is it? Quarter after 11. We've been running here for... It was just one game, right? Two-ish? I don't know, because we have no idea what happened in two players. So, let's do this again. Let's do this. Light the Endor Missions. Right down the middle. Perfect opportunity to show off the shoot again. So that's how that works. Now we just need to hit it left ramp. By the way, left orbit, left inner loop, left ramp, right inner loop, right ramp, right orbit, right scoop. And then you've got the force targets over here to the left. So let's hit Endor. Boom. Like butter. Like butter. We're about to... Oh, not what I meant to do. There we go. That was an awful shot. Alright, so we saved our multiplier. Doesn't feel like that's even useful. I'm going to have to be able to score points for the multiplier to be helpful, right? Let's go Death Star. Nope. And I hit that perfect angle called Screw George and sent it right down the middle. Alright, so what do we got here? Let's go TIE Fighters. What is really awesome to get is your TIE Fighter multiball at the same time that you're in the Battle Above Endor multiball. That's solid. This might be... Are we not going to crack 10 million on this game? Hey, look at that. Don't have that issue. Alright, we just need to hit the TIE Fighter. There it is. We're at 26. That could be better. I cannot, for the life of me, hit... Hit the Death Star shot. And, man, do these just want to drain. It's so broken. There it is. There it goes. Once again, not a good player. If you want good players, there are many other podcasts. Buffalo Pinball was another one. Kevin from Buffalo Pinball, absolutely amazing player. If you want to watch good players, you can go there. There we go. We can do this. Endure. Make the shots happen. Maintain your multipliers. Don't let it drain. I would argue that left ramp is easier from the left side. just gonna take a second just just let it go here we go eight shots we can do this come on there's one there's two don't lose your multipliers that was one of the things that we mentioned right all right so now we're gonna go right ramp I think that's our four shots that was not lit. That might be five. Six. Don't think we saved it. Did we? We did save it. Wow. Not what I meant to do. Missed. Oh, that should have been it. Definitely lost the multiplayer that time. So what do we need? We need TIE Fighter, left orbit. The left orbit's been a dick all night. And Death Star. Missed it. Hey, we got the TIE Fighter. Ah, so that's 22 TIE Fighters. That's an awful first ball. We're at 42 million. We've got a shitty multiplier because we just died. We should really go the plus five TIE Fighters. Although lighting the escape... When you light the escape, the may the force be with you thing here drops out. You also get that for completing the force targets. All right, come on, Death Star Shell. Let's do this. I was one with the force, and the force is one with me. Okay, cool. Now we are ready to initiate Endor. I kind of don't want to do it yet. So I just lost my multiplier. That sucks. Let's go Mystery. So that was a post And if I let this basically roll off and then hit it I hit the mystery So let go for that Missed it I did get the order You know there something I was going to look at the positive side. I don't know if I think of myself as an optimist. There. Oh, come on! Let's go mystery again. I can do this. Mystery! Mystery! Nope. Last chance for the mystery. There. Oh! I said it. Nope, now we've got to keep our multipliers... There we go. Jeez. Luck out for the mystery while I'm keeping my multipliers alive. So I'm probably at 6 on the multiplier. Good. We're going to start double multipliers. So that's going to bump me up to 12. and now I'm going to go to start Endor. There's the battle above Endor, so it's going to kick out one more ball. If I can keep it alive long enough, or maybe it's based on something else, this will turn orange, and when that happens, if I hit it, I'll add a third ball to the mix. Now, there's a bunch of shots I need to make. There's one. Lost my multipliers, that's always good. I'm really trying to hit that TIE fighter multiball, because I got the TIE fighter multiball. Now if I still have double multipliers, that might actually be good that these are all draining, because it's... not anymore. Slow it down. We've got video mode available to us. We completed Endor. We did not blow up the Death Star. I'm very sorry about that. There it is. Pull video mode. Still have a 1x multiplier. I haven't figured out what it is that I'm supposed to do to get a different multiplier. going into it. Wow, this is ugly. We're going to go to the right. Yeah, that wasn't great. Five million. Oh, come on. Don't waste that. I don't know. Alright, what do we need here? Looks like we've got yellow flashing. So you can... Oh my god. There it is. That was a slap save. I'll take that. Right down there. I should have bumped it. So that was ball two. We've got Endor done. 12 million bonus, and what do we got here? We're at 62 on the TIE Fighters. We light extra ball pretty far up. We want to light Hoth. Yeah. Tatooine. We've also got two there. Let's do it. Alright, so Hoth coming up. There it is. Ha! Yes. Navigate the aspirate field. Because I'm good at this. Whaaat? Oh my gosh. So bad! George, what are you doing? Oh, that was so bad. 20 million bonus, though. I feel like I went in there with a one-times multiplier. Oh, Jesus. Kind of forgot I was playing pinball. All right, great. We're ready to start the Hoth. And we just lost our multipliers, but we're hitting Hoth multiball now. Can we do both? No, we're going to escape from Hoth. Shoot spinner to build value, shoot inner loop to destroy the AP. All right, so we want to hit... Added the extra ball at the... Oh, I did it! Nice, I just backhanded that. I said I was going to work on that. I was attempting an air defense there. Can you even believe I'm attempting this? All right, it's worth it to go for the extra ball here, because that is the most important thing. Let's get it. There it is. All right, I mean, this isn't an awful game. Let's see if we can clear a billion. Because that would be mediocre. We got our Death Star. Don't go. All right, Death Star. That's it. Awesome! We get to initiate escape from Boba Fett. This is a decent... Wow! Did you see that? Okay, so we've got to make this one shot. That sucks. So, escape from Boba Fett is trying not to have a seizure while making very explicit shots on the map. I don't think I'm still in it. But let's see what happens. No. Alright, so we're going to do... Let's do the plus five TIE Fighters. Okay, we're going to go Death Star. Great. It's our first Death Star mission. We really needed to light Tatooine. I don't know. Fight TIE Fighters. Purple shots light targets for a short time. Shoot. Four targets. That might be one. That was not a target. Whoa, they're playing the music to destroy the Death Star! That sucks. I did destroy a hundred. We got Hoth. We got Endor. We lit Boba Fett. We had an opportunity. That wasn't... I mean, that was an okay game for me. But once again, this podcast isn't a podcast of watching somebody kick ass on pinball. This is documenting the process of going from zero to hero, right? God. What time is it? 11.30. I think we got time for one more. You think we got time for one more? I think we need one more. Let's do this. Like the Endor missions. Come on. We got this. Don't freak out. There we go. Okay. Endor, we got eight shots. Four and four. We can do this. There's one. All right. There's two. Lost our multiplier, but that's fine. Right now we're just going mode. There we go. Three. Wow, really late hit. Four. There it is. Hyperspace loop. Hurry up, sorry. Oh, I hate that. God. Um. Oh, shit. I'll take it. I will take it. Not too proud to take a free crazy shot. Slap save. Looks like we got it. Nice. We've got all the time in the world. 23. Let's see if we can backhand that orbit. Nope. Right there. Okay. How many more shots do we need to make? We'll take the TIE Fighters. Thank you Get there That may have been egregious. Love that word. Let's go ahead and move this bag that way. That was a rough push. Is that still mostly centered? I apologize for moving the shit out of that. I mean, I guess let's... Let's do it. Thank you. right down the old middle here oh my god i love and hate this game it's very frustrating i just wish i could be better all the time immediately like you don't have to put in the 10 000 hours to get good at things i just want to be good now I know I said one more, but we've got one more. I mean, I didn't even complete Endor a second time. There's a name for that. Jesus, that was fast. Just trying to hit that mystery. I'm losing that multiplier. Happy I got the escape. Oh. Let's get that. We'll take it. Bonus multiplier. I kind of thought that was going to bounce. trying to make it difficult to do what I'm doing here. Here we go, okay. TIE fighter coming up. Oh my gosh. There it is. There it is. We're at 40 times multiplier right now So we want to make as many Of the shots as possible And also There we go Oh my god If we could just hit something At 40 times I'll take a mystery if we're alright so we're at a 40 times multiplier right now and we're about to hit battle above Endor if we can get there quickly without losing our multiplier that could be amazing or without losing the ball there it is 40 times multiplier going into a multiplier which is awesome I can't make a freaking shot to save my life give me that extra ball Lost my first ball. I just need to get my extra ball! Did I just lose 40 times? I did. There it is. Extra ball, and we're going into a very special mode right now called lightsaber duel. This is pretty. Enjoy the light show. The light show is pretty awesome. I'm going to let this play out. Yeah, all the blues and reds. It's actually hard to see since I've got the lights on, since I've got most of the lights turned off. You guys can probably see it a lot better than me. There are times when it shuts off and it's actually hard to see the shot. Alright, so now there's that. Damn it. What ball was that? So we completed Endor. We did not destroy the Death Star. That's really frustrating. I was just trying to keep the balls alive. We hit it with 40 times multiplier, which is great. What are we at? We're at 40 seconds on our lightsaber duel. We've got 96 of those guys. We're at 652. I don't need more of that. Lighting the escape sounds kind of good. 5% score. Bonus held. So 5% score. 10% would be 65 million, so we'd get 32.5 and some change. I'm going to light the escape. That's going to flip this guy out here, you know, because that's, it's going to happen. All right, so we've got to make this right inner loop shot, which I missed again. There it is. All right, a little harder from this side. Got it. Wow. That sucks. That was ball two. I got almost no points on that. 696. 696. It's like the mystery. Got 37 seconds. Missed that shot. Sucks. Happy I lit that. Alright, here we go. Right. Missed it. Oh my god. I hate that mode. I've only completed it once and I come across it all the time. You initiate that mode by completing the force targets five times. anyway proof that this is uh not a uh not documenting a uh an already good uh pinball player going to get better that's what this is it's a journey you know the destination the start it's the journey along the way hopefully it's enjoyable for you guys i've got cameras and a computer and I'm really just loving pinball. It's, it's one of those things, you know, I've never, uh, I've never been into playing first person games, uh, not first person, uh, single player games. I always like playing with others. Uh, and this is the first time where I feel like I've, I've got a game that, um, that I'm okay playing by myself. Like over here, I've got a, uh, a star. It's, it's a shoot. I wonder if I can just move it. Nope. I'm not going to move it. That's going mess with things. But anyway, I've got an arcade game, that old school arcade, and my favorite thing to play in it is Joust. And Joust is fun by yourself, but it's way more fun when you play it with other people. There's others like that. I dig Pac-Man, but once again, Pac-Man in a competitive setting. Obviously you don't play, you don't typically play with a person. Not together at the same time, rather. But just, you know, competitive scoring. But that's different. When it comes to pinball, It's challenging me to make these shots. It doesn't really make a difference about other people. And I have a lot of fun when people come over and we play, but it's really about getting better. It's learning the different techniques to handle the pinball. Knowing that I can make certain shots, that feeling when you let the ball drop down and you hit the flipper at the exact right moment to head it exactly where you were going and you get a satisfying sound at the same time that you start a mode or you finish a mode or whatever that is. It's just I don't know. It's great. It's a fun sport and I'm happy I found it. It was kind of by accident. But that's a story for another session. You guys have been great. And I'm in the basement by myself talking to myself. That's chaos. I'll see you guys. Thank you.
