## Analysis

Dr. C and Mrs. J conduct a comprehensive review of Stern's Godzilla pinball machine (Premium Edition), rating it across five categories: Theme (4.5/5 average), Look/Art (4.5/5), Sound (4.5/5), Feel/Physical Gameplay (4.5/5), and Play/Code (5/5), yielding a final score of 22.5/25—the highest score they've given, surpassing even Jurassic Park. They praise the game's universal appeal to both casual and advanced players, the quality of artwork by Jeremy Packer, the iconic Blue Öyster Cult song integration, and exceptional code depth with well-designed kaiju battles and multiball experiences.

### Key Claims

- [HIGH] The game uses magnetic catch mechanic for Mechagodzilla ramp shots — _Dr. C describes hitting ramps where 'the ball goes in the little curlicue path' and Mechagodzilla 'would catch it on its magnet...and spin'_
- [HIGH] Mrs. J prefers the standard color Premium Edition over the 70th Anniversary black/white/red variant — _Mrs. J states she would 'stick with the original Premium' due to liking the full color art package_
- [HIGH] The game has selectable music including multiple Godzilla-themed tracks beyond the main Blue Öyster Cult song — _Dr. C describes pressing buttons to choose different songs and mentions enjoying Battle of Anguirus mode_

## Transcript

All right, three, two, one, and go. Welcome to Pinball Pursuit. I'm Dr. C. And I'm Mrs. J. We're going to be talking about Godzilla. We specifically had the premium version of the game in our home. A few details about Godzilla, it's obviously designed by Keith Elwin. We love Keith Elwin. Classic. This is the third Keith Elwin game we've had in our house. Oh, big number three. Yeah, Jurassic Park, Jaws, and now Godzilla. And I love them all. I know, they've all been so good. Jaws is probably at the bottom of that list, but that's okay. That's okay, we still like Jaws. That's okay, we still like Jaws. We still like Jaws. The lead software was Rick Nagel, again, with Keith. They're a pretty big team. Our work on this one was Zombie Yeti, who's done a lot of the machines that we've had before. And then sound was by Jerry Thompson with callouts by Rick Zieff. We're going to talk about those. His debut, at least for us. Well, for us. I don't think, maybe not. I mean, that's the first time I've heard his name. Sorry, Rick. I'm sure you're very accomplished. Yeah, I'm sure you have many more details to your name. But yeah, so let's get into it. Let's get into it. What's the first category? The first category is the theme. All right. So as you know, we have, well, as you may not know, but the way that we've been rating all these machines is we have a one to five scale and I'm doing it a very HR way because that is what I do. Um, so a one is a does not meet expectations. A three is it's doing the job, you know, are there things that could be better? Yeah. But are the things that could be worse? Oh, yeah. Five is basically something we have never seen before. Blows our mind is incredible and insane. Um, so that's the rating scale that we're going on. The theme is just the overall theme of the machine. You know, how they do the theme justice. Yes, does it integrate well. Exactly. Are we excited about the theme, etc., etc. So, we actually, Dr. C and I, in the past, have talked over our reviews before. We're going in blind. We're going in blind. I have no idea what she's going to say. Cameron has no idea. She has no idea what I'm going to say. I think I know what you're going to say just because I know how you feel. He has no idea what I'm going to say. I have no idea. I'm a little scared. Complete surprises. Anywho, the theme. This one was hard for me in the beginning. Okay. Just because I've never seen a Godzilla movie. Everybody's a huge fan of the new Godzilla movie that came out. Godzilla Minus One. That one. If you haven't seen Godzilla Minus One, you should go see Godzilla Minus One. He tells me I need to. It's so good. I almost cried. Wow. I don't know if I've ever seen... I have seen you cry in movies, but very, very... Not very often. It was so... And you would not think that about a Godzilla movie. Yeah. But it was heartfelt and also action-packed and deserves all the praise it gets. Okay. 100% recommend. So on paper, if I were to see a list of games and I saw Godzilla, I'd be like, meh. But looking at the machine and seeing all there is to it, which we'll get to in a minute, I would play it. I would definitely play it. There's so much you can do with this theme that makes it very cool. What, 30 films or something like that? Yeah. Since 1950-something? Exactly. And so because of that, I'm giving the theme a four. Oh, you're giving it a four? I'm giving it a four. Okay. Because like I said, on paper, I'd be like, whatever. But if you had a lineup of machines and I were to pick them out, I think I would go for Godzilla as a four. As a theme? Yeah. Okay. So for me, on theme, I... Here's the thing. I feel like you. I've seen a couple of Godzilla movies. I saw Godzilla Minus One. Yeah. I saw the really bad one with Matthew Broderick from the 2000s. I did not know that that was a thing. Yes. It was called Godzilla. It was the first American-made Godzilla film. And they didn't understand the assignment. It was not good. I think it was 2001. I'm going to fact-check myself and put it right here. Whatever it ended up being. Um, so I've seen a couple of these, right? Um, I'm very pop culture oriented. I like a lot of pop culture stuff, but is Godzilla a theme that I would be like craving kind of like you? Yeah. No, not really. But is Godzilla a perfect pinball theme? Oh yeah. Yeah. Because here's the thing about Godzilla. You're all about, it's all about fighting monsters. It's all about destroying stuff and causing chaos. And what is pinball than controlled chaos? the best pinball machines are things where you like battle and stuff like that in my opinion so for me this is theme perfection theme perfection this is a five i give this a five that's that's a big deal in my hr book i yes because i don't know that you could do a better theme for pinball okay yeah it's not like my favorite theme yeah but is this the perfect pinball thing. Yeah. It 100% is the perfect pinball. It just works so well. Yeah. So stinking well. So I loved it. Yeah. So you gave it a four. I gave it a four. I gave it a five. You gave it a five. So combined 4.5. Wow. Okay. Moving on. Moving on. We have the look. So, um, zombie Yeti did the art package on this. There's a lot going on with how this machine looks. We had the premium version. I love... Sorry, I gotta give my dog a treat. There you go, buddy. I love the art package on this game. I think that Zombie Yeti did such a good job with how the game looks Godzilla is so striking That back glass with him battling Ghidorah or on the probe with his heat ray It's eye-catching. The colors pop. The play field is informative. While also just being really cool to look at. Really fun. Very fun to look at. So for me, I give the look of this machine 4.75. It's near perfection. It's near perfection. I have one critique I do not like the art on the Mothra Outlane Ball Save it looks weird I don't like that little that's like the one specific area I wish it was something different it looks like a butt I'll take a second look at that it's not my favorite that's like the only critique I have of the whole art package it's incredible I love it how about you what are you thinking so my favorite thing about the look is a i mean there's so many things everywhere going on and i love that godzilla is represented everywhere like at least on the premium i don't know about the pro as much but on the premium there's like the godzilla toy in the very back you've got mecha godzilla right here i love the big godzilla face that is right there by the qr scanner code thing the cartoon one and i just love that he's everywhere i feel like this is like a completely godzilla machine you know it's not like They just have him once in the corner and then, you know, whatever else everywhere. No, he is everywhere. And I love that. The other thing you talked about, the colors and just like the general feel of the play field. I feel like it feels very retro arcade. It's very neon. It does. And I like that. Yeah. I think that's fun. It just has so many things inside of it that make me want to play it. It's like you see that building standing up tall and you're like, ooh. You see the metal Mechagodzilla in the corner and you're like, ooh. You want to know what they're going to do and how they're going to interact. And so by me just looking at the machine, it makes me want to play it. Got it. So what is your score then? 4.25. Whoa. Okay. That's a high score for you. This is a big deal for me. Yeah. Mrs. J is very stingy. I'm so sorry. With her score. If you've wondered why some of our scores are lower than you think they should be. I have a high standard. I do not just give out good scores. No, she does not. No, I do not. Okay. so what do we have next? We have next the sound. The sound. The sound. This is the call outs, this is the music this is, you know, everything that you hear from a machine. Got it. Um, my first thing I want to mention is I don't know if I want to sing it Go, go Godzilla! Yes! The Oyster Golf song! I am singing that every day and it's been a minute since we've had it and I just I can't get it out of my head. I love that he has his own theme song and I love that it's included. I love that they have it. I mean, I think that was a little bit of a stretch for them to get that license for that song. Oh yeah? So glad. I love that they did. I love that they did. I think it's so fun. I also love the announcer dude. You do a good impression. Oh, good golly, Miss Molly. Double jackpot! Exactly. And I like the alien voice too. Oh, the exilians? Yes, yes, that's who they are. Good call. I think they're good. I think they're good. I think it's memorable as many of the songs are and i wouldn't say many i i think the foo fighters because of course the fighters is iconic um and then i think of jurassic park because that is iconic and then i feel like this has an iconic song too as well with the go-go godzilla yep um really like that helps me remember the machine um i'm giving that a four you're giving it a four okay you're giving in a form yep um okay the sound for me uh i love the announcer voice guy like yeah i just said it right thank you golly miss molly double jackpot um i think that the guy that sounds like i think it's the same announcer that's doing the call outs but he sounds like richard kind if you don't know who richard kind is i'm gonna put him here he was the voice of bing bong in up or not inside out yeah uh that guy's voice he does a really good impression that's like the civilian like it's like shoot the school like yeah like old school guy he does such a good job with that i love the random like oh no my car like yeah you can hear in the game um i it's so funny um i think the music's great i love that you can choose the music and normally i do the blue is your cold song right the gogo godzilla hey it's okay wally it's okay um usually that's the song that i would play but you can press the button and choose all these other songs from his past. I really liked I think it was the Battle of Anguirus or something like that. It was another one that I would often go to. Or sometimes I just go to the random and I just listen to a random one because I play this machine a lot. Switch it up. It's fine. Loved it. So good. Again, is this like my favorite rock band doing a pinball machine? No. Would I listen to this on a soundtrack? No. but is it like perfect for a pinball machine yes yes it totally it totally is the announcer voice is fantastic all the destruction going on the exilions are corny and just just enough goofy but also engaging I'm sorry this is another perfection for me it's my goodness yeah so combined 4.5 oh my god 4.5 all the way down so far that's a little crazy i mean there's a reason this is so highly rated so highly so highly rated so highly rated and we feel the same way we do uh okay so now we have the feel of the game okay so the feel for people who don't understand what we're doing is everything physical about the game how does it feel to hit the shots how does it feel to interact with the toys how does the layout feel to shoot uh it all physical things that go into the actual like when you when you playing around and stuff How do those things feel So for me the feel of this game is wholly unique. It feels super unique. I love the building toy. Yep. And we had the premium. So the building toy goes up and down. You shoot it. It goes out. I love the mini wallop shot. I love the Mechagodzilla where it would catch it on its belly and then. With the magnet. With the magnet. Yep. And spin. It was so satisfying to hit those ramps. I love how the ball goes in the little curlicue path. The pop bumper is just enough rage inducing, but also like fun to have right there. Yeah. And have it be the spaceship. Yeah. that it was just enough chaos that I felt like I could do it, but also it was risky. I love how this game feels. I have a hard time not giving it a five, but there's just a couple of things. The loop shot that I love is so cool. It's so satisfying to hit that again and again and again. But sometimes if it didn't quite have enough energy, it would go straight down the left alley, and I could do nothing to save it. I think that overall the game is pretty fair. and how it treats you. Yeah. Are there a couple of tweaks I might do? Maybe. I wish the building would move up and down more than it does. Okay, more interaction. A little more interaction there. But overall, it's hard for me to give this thing anything lower than a 4.5. Okay. So that's what it's getting for me. There we go. Perfect. So the feel for me as a novice player, I feel like you're more of the... I'm not that good, but I'm a little okay. But he's better than I am. So I'm the more casual novice player. I love that I could play this game. And I love that both you and I could play this game and have different experiences. You mentioned the pop bumpers. I love a good pop bumper, but I love a good pop bumper that is usable. I feel like sometimes they're just crammed up in the top, kind of forgotten about. Exactly. I don't know, like you don't interact with them all that much. No, I love that you interact with this one a decent amount. You also mentioned the, is it the tail whip shot that you can hit again and again? Or it's the, yeah. Yeah. I love a good usable upper flipper. Sometimes I feel like flippers get thrown in machines just to have a flipper. You know, it's almost kind of like a gimmicky, oh, this one's got four flippers. But like you don't ever use them. I feel like this is a usable flipper, which I like. Yeah. You mentioned the building. Love the building. Love the balls that you can lock and all the things. And another thing that I love is just that this is a universal game that people can play. we had a neighbor come over. Yes, we did. And, shout out Becca, she was talking about how, because they come over every once in a while, they'll try out our new machines, and how she's like, some I feel like I can't play. Some I feel like they just, you know, it's hard to hit the ramps, it's hard to hit the shots. But she was like, no, I feel like I can actually play this one. And, you know, enjoy it and have fun. And that's something that we really want in our home. We definitely do want the more advanced machines and stuff, but we also want a few that are very universal, things that everyone can play and to that fact i feel like i could hit the ramps like were they a challenge yes but there are some machines where i'm like for the life of me i'm not going to get that right it's not going to happen they're not usable for me yeah and so i love that i could hit all the shots sometimes i don't want to say you didn't feel like it was impossible exactly i felt like yeah yeah i can do this and so for that i gave the field 4.5 4.5 yes okay yes we were like 4.5 is all the way down the line. This is nuts. We did not coordinate this. No. This is all new. Okay, so, last but not least, the play. The play. So the play is how the game plays. I mean, you've got rule sets, you've got, you know, the code, the modes, all of that. Yeah. I kind of alluded to this in the feel, but I like that this is a game for both beginners and advanced players. I had a really good time and was getting decent scores. With my not as extensive knowledge as you have. Because if you've watched our play tutorial. Which is not out yet as of recording. It will be soon. It will be soon. There are so many different combos. So many different things. So many different ways to get different things. It's a little crazy. But I knew how to start up monster fights. I knew how to get through the fights. It doesn't take reading a manual to get through this game. but you can also read the manual and go way further. So I just had a good time playing my own game. You had a good time playing your own game, and we both felt satisfied walking away from it. So I feel like, again, the universal pleaser. I give the play a four. Okay, a four. That's a good score. Yeah. When it comes to the play of this game, you may have seen on our Instagram, I posted that I got my first ever billion playing this game. Nuts. I was sitting there. Yes, she was doing a puzzle while I was playing. And he's over there freaking out, and he's like, I'm doing so good, and I'm like, that's nice, honey. Keep it up. And then I found out how well he was actually doing. He was like, oh. I got to like too many wizard modes. This is great. Sorry. I got to Terabekka Godzilla, and I got to Planet X. It was fantastic. I had no idea. Here's the thing with the play of this game. We have a near perfect toys and mechs and layout and shots and stuff. And then this code is so good. I love the kaiju battles They so fun to do I found myself challenging myself doing different ones at different times just based on how I was feeling there was so much strategy on which one you were going to do based on if you had a multi ready to go um i felt for the like one of the first times like in a zen moment playing a multiball and being able to like hit shots while in a multiball it was nuts um i love all the different things that you could do with like, okay, I want to get an extra ball, so I'm going to focus on doing the saucer attacks. Or, okay, I want to get to, you know, a carnage that's over 100 million. I knew how to do all these things. And it's like play perfection. Like, I loved playing this game. I played it so much. And lucky for me, Loser Kid Pinball took over the PinQuest app, and they had a little thing where you could post your high score. Oh, yeah. And I had, like, the second or third highest score or something like that. Because I got, like, over 900 million and just happened to have my app open. And I got this little pin. I got a little Loser Kid pin for it. Oh, I want to see. Oh, that's fun. It just got in the mail literally today. Shout out, Loser Kid. Love that. Shout out, Loser Kid. It's another five. It's another five. It's another five. I know. it is it is so so we we're at 4.5 down the line oh my gosh every single one well you don't need to use your calculator brain for this one no no so basically uh the total here ends up being 22.5 out of 25 okay which puts it at the very top at the very top uh it beats out jurassic park which was a near perfect game for us too i love jurassic park um i would put this above jurassic would you put this above jurassic park i think i would i think i would i know i thought you were gonna say no i know i think the thing that really like solidified made me realize how much i love godzilla is we went to an arcade a few weeks ago we did we had godzilla in our home whenever we go to arcades and we've got a machine at home i don't play it at the arcade because i'm like we can just go play it home for free. True. No. I really wanted to play Godzilla. But I was like, no, I will not. I will go home and play it for free. But every time I pass it, I'd be like, I want to play Godzilla. I mean, and I've never felt that way before. But I really like Godzilla. I mean, it's, there's a reason it's number one. Yeah. It makes sense. I understand. I get it. I get it. The hype is real. The hype is real. It is so good. If we were to go buy a machine right now, it would be Godzilla. I could be Godzilla. Absolutely love it. So let us know what you think of our review. Obviously, it's not too surprising. Yeah, yeah. But we love this game. And we can't get enough of it. And we have another game in the house right now. It's Deadpool. I'm loving Deadpool. Yep, we'll see. I'm missing Godzilla. Yeah. I mean, I would love to know if people think Godzilla is underhyped, overhyped, or appropriately hyped. because I thought maybe it would be overhyped. I thought too. Yeah, before we got it. Because we played on location, and I had already enjoyed it, but I didn't understand all the rules as much, and I had to dive in deep to make those tutorials. And once I did, man, I was, oh, oh. And that's why it's so fun to do these rentals because I know we've said this before, but it's kind of like Jaws, the way that it was for us. We would really enjoy playing it in an arcade, and then we brought it home, and it was still really fun. We liked it, but the hype went down a little. And so that's why I love the idea of rentals. We're going to have to do a whole video. We will. We will do a whole video for rentals. Yeah. I mean, just having it in your home for six weeks, you're like, am I going to enjoy this for the six weeks and then be ready for a new one? Yeah. Or is this one that I'm going to want to keep playing? Yeah. And Godzilla was one that we wanted to keep playing. I'm going to want to keep playing that one for a long time. Other ones, I'm like, okay, see you later. It was really fun in the arcade. but for six weeks you kind of got over it but no like there are some that that stand out stand out 100% one last question before we wrap up on Godzilla yeah if we were to get this there's kind of two premium all the way right premium all the way you have to get it it's so much more fun there's the Godzilla 70th that's the thing all black and white and the shiny with the red or there's the full color original yeah I would have to see the 70th in anniversary version in person have you not seen it in person no oh i've never seen it oh but one thing that i really liked about this version is all the colors i thought that was really fun i feel like it might get muddy and like i feel like the shock factor when you first look at it is like oh this is a cool machine but then after having it for a while i think it might just be kind of i don't know i'd have to see it in person i so i've seen it in person and it's beautiful yeah Like the metallic sheen. They have the foiled stuff that really makes it pop. But I think I like the color. I like the color. I like what Zombie Eddie did with the art package. So I think I would probably just stick with the original Primo. I think the OG is great. Yeah. So that's where I go. We'll see. If we do ever end up getting one of these, which is the plan. We'll get there. We'll let you know. But yeah, that's it for our review of Godzilla. If you enjoyed this, please subscribe. We know that most people that watch our videos don't subscribe. I am one of those people. I subscribe to our own channel, don't worry. But I just, I don't know. Like, they just pop up on my feed anyway. But it is such a huge help to subscribe to us. So if you're watching and you like what we put out, please subscribe. Yeah. Let us know what you think. Let us know what games you think we should be renting next to get in. And when you get our tutorial, let us know how we did. Yep. Anyway, that's it for us. Keep flipping.
