## Analysis

Zach Sharpe and Greg from Straight Down the Middle podcast present their top 10 list of game-specific pinball modifications, ranking mods by transformative impact on gameplay and aesthetics. The list ranges from Star Trek Vengeance's light-up ring mod (#10) to Tron's EL Wire Kit for AC/DC Pro (#1), emphasizing mods that fundamentally change how a machine looks or functions. Hosts acknowledge the difficulty of curation, mention numerous honorable mentions, and express respect for mod makers despite the intense time investment and financial challenges involved.

### Key Claims

- [HIGH] The Tron EL Wire Kit for AC/DC Pro makes the game visually indistinguishable from the Limited Edition version — _Zach Sharpe explicitly states: 'When you go up to it, I can't tell the difference between a Limited Edition sometimes and a Stern AC/DC (Pro Vault Edition). Yeah. With this mod on.'_
- [HIGH] Mike D's Pinball Arcade table title LCD mod is expensive but makes the speaker want the entire $5,000 machine — _Greg: 'That mod makes me want Pinball Arcade table title. I agree. It makes me want the whole damn machine, just the mod.' Later noting it's very expensive._
- [MEDIUM] Mike D is no longer producing the Pinball Arcade table title LCD mod — _Greg states: 'But the bad thing is, is though, he's not making them any longer. Is that right?' Zach confirms uncertainty: 'I can't either.'_
- [HIGH] The Judge Dredd Dead World mod converts the original ball-return mechanism into a physical ball lock — _Zach: 'The original Judge Dredd has, it's not a ball locking mechanism... But for the Dead World mod, what it does is it creates a captive ball lock there. A physical ball lock.'_
- [HIGH] Most people prefer physical ball locks to other locking mechanisms — _Greg: 'If you had the choice, most people are always going to go with a physical ball lock... Nobody wants something you just hit. It's all ball lock.'_
- [HIGH] The Metallica Snake Mod by Pin Graphics adds visual continuity to the snake ramp on the playfield — _Zach: 'The snake mod that Pin Graphics did where they added the plastic they added the decal for the ramp to make it look slithering back up that ramp... it gives some continuity to where it is.'_
- [MEDIUM] Stern's Vault editions may devalue earlier Limited Edition versions through secondary market resale — _Greg expresses concern: 'if I went out and I bought a Tron for $6,000, $7,000, $6,500 for a Stern AC/DC (Pro Vault Edition)... and then they turn around and release the Vault for a bit cheaper, it devalues the game and the rarity of that game.'_
- [MEDIUM] The AC/DC Premium Vault edition is expected to release before Tron Vault edition — _Zach: 'I think I'm hearing Stern AC/DC (Premium). I think so, too.' Both hosts express agreement on the order._
- [HIGH] Making pinball mods is time-consuming and financially unrewarding relative to effort invested — _Zach: 'making pinball mods is tough. Stuff comes up in life. It's hard... even though you're charging a lot for them, it still just doesn't justify the time that people put into these mods'_
- [HIGH] The hosts decided not to include a 'worst three mods' segment out of respect for mod makers' effort — _Zach: 'We usually do a worst three of our top ten list, but because these are pinball people... we didn't want to razz anybody, man, because all mods... Making pinball mods is hard.'_

## Transcript

What's happening guys, it's Zach and Greg with Straight Down the Middle Pinball for the top 10 list again this month. This month we're going to review the top 10 game specific modifications or game mods. I'm a huge, huge mod guy. I love mods. I love LEDs. Anything to enhance a game, I just love it. Yourself, you like mods. I like mods. I'm not a big modder like you, but I like them. Yeah. So what we tried to do is compile a list, and this was so super hard for us because we kept thinking of different mods. Oh, that mod's essential. That mod's awesome. Yeah. We tried to pick 10 mods that we think change the game, that without this mod, they just don't look like the same machine. And they don't, maybe they still function the same, but they're just not the same machine. Yeah, because it was, what made it so difficult was there's games that just enhance the beauty of the game. Then there was, like you said, games that enhance the function of the game, in a sense. It's a hard list. It was very hard. Like, we thought, oh, this one would be a good one. This would be easy. Yeah. Not at all. Man, not at all. So that's what we're going to review today. and then I don't know what we're going to do next month top 10 list. We've got all kinds of options. We've got a lot of options. We've compiled and thought about a lot of things. I want to do toppers. At some point, top 10 toppers. That's the thing with most of our lists. We work on these for weeks. It's a lot of phone conversation back and forth on these top 10 lists. We move things around. It's not literally like this is my favorite thing and this is what I put together and we just threw it together overnight. We try to think about it. We literally think about it. We rewrite that list and new things will get put on. Like last time, a lot of people were talking about the Circus Voltaire, about how we left off the Ringmaster. And we sort of agree with the people that commented on that, man. We messed up a little bit. It may should have been in there. It should have. But we literally just rewrite and rewrite these lists to try to get as accurate as we can. But again, it's another one of those subjective. We've only got ten spots. We're going to pick them. You're going to agree. You're going to disagree. And that's why we love you. And this will be one of the most disagreed with. That's a tough one. Because this list can be all over the place. So here's what we did leave out. So we left out any modification or any mod that can be put on different games. So Undercab Lighting is awesome. Cliffies. Cliffies. We thought it was the best mod you could really have. But it's a universal. Yeah. These are very game-specific mods. We'll have another top ten list of general modifications. You can put lighted flipper buttons, side blades, all that kind of stuff that we're looking forward to doing a top ten on that. But as of right now, game-specific mods. So, with that being said, you want to start this list? Yeah. Here we go. Let's go. Let's start with number ten. Drum roll. I need to put in a drum roll, don't I? All right. So number 10 for us is the Star Trek Vengeance mod. And Beatmaster on Pinside makes that. So shout out to Beatmaster. He makes a fantastic product. I think Beatmaster is in Canada. I'm not sure where he's from. So all the Canadian guys out there and gals, Beatmaster is doing a really good job making this mod. So essentially what it is, you'll see in the pictures here, but it is a ring that goes in between the Vengeance disc, the mod, and it lights up as you hit it. Yes, and it's one of those mods that literally it looks like the game should have had it when that game came out. It's a disgrace that that game doesn't have that. So if you have a Star Trek, there's no reason, again, you're going to hear me saying this all night, there's no reason not to have that mod. It's an easy hookup. It is so beautiful. You can pick, I think Beatmaster has blues and reds. Blues usually sell out quicker. I've got a Star Trek Pro. I've had one before. ordered it immediately. I got another Star Trek Pro that we'll probably review at some point. When I had mine before I saw it, that was the number one mod I wanted. So I'm on his wait list for another one. So Beatmaster, number 10, Star Trek Vengeance light-up mod. There's nothing like it. It's really cool. Number nine. Number nine for us, this is us cheating a little bit. Number nine is a tie because it's two mods, but they're both on the same game. The game itself is Jurassic Park. number nine of the top 10 best game specific mods is jurassic park working gate by tim's pinball mods it is a gate that so it has a plastic on the original game yes and that's just such a important part of the game but he created a three-dimensional not only a three-dimensional model but one that has flicker led lighting like the torches yes and then the gate actually opens up and it has a scene behind it. Fantastic. So it's really cool. It is neat. So that and Jurassic Park, new T-Rex. New T-Rex. It's like a sleeve, I think. I think you can take it off. Does the whole thing come off? The whole T-Rex? Oh, man. Yeah. Winter is Coming is, I'm not just saying that because I love Game of Thrones. Winter is Coming is a Pimside guy. Check him out. He always sells out on this mod. Yes. It replaces the, the T-Rex is cool in Jurassic Park, but it looks like a lizard. It looks more like the freaking, the Brontosaurus. Like you remember when they're all, when Alan Grant and them are all in the tree? That's what the T-Rex looks like. It doesn't look like the T-Rex. We love that toy, but he upgrades it in a way that looks like a ferocious T-Rex. Winters looks like the movie T-Rex. It does. That's the T-Rex he made, so it fits. We couldn't decide between the two, so we thought, you know what? Both of them on that game make that game. It makes you want that game really bad. So that's number nine. Number eight Number eight for us is Lord of the Rings Palantir mod No it not the Path of the Dead mod We thought about it It the Palantir mod Who makes that JRobinso99. J-R-O-B-I-N-S-O-99 on Pinside. He makes the Palantir mod. So on the original Lord of the Rings, there's this little bitty, I don't know, it's the crystal ball that, oh God, I'm a Lord of the Rings fan. I don't know what the guy's name is. Is it the bad... Sauron? No. Is it Sauron? No. It's the bad wizard. It's Sauron, eh? It's Sauron. I saw him on... Yeah. Look, it's Sauron. Yeah, that guy. That guy. Yeah. So on the original game, it's got like this wee little bitty ball that's supposed to be the crystal ball, but then John Youssi the screw coming up in it, and it looks like crap. So what jrobinson99 did, or jrobinson99 did, was he enlarged that, and he put a picture of the Eye of Sauron in the back of it, lit it up. It's awesome. Whenever people came to play the one that I had— It's very distinctive, too. Oh, it lights up. And one of my neighbors, pinball guy, came over, and when he saw it, he said, no bullshit, that's mesmerizing. Yeah. Like, it just lights up the whole game. So for us, Path of the Dead mod, it's pretty cool, but it's nothing like this Paladin mod. This was a bigger impact, I thought. Yeah, definitely. A lot bigger impact. It looks wrong without this mod, so that's why it made our top ten list. All right, number seven. Number seven, the old classic Twilight Zone Gumballs kit. This is by Pinbits. Before, the gumball in the machine was cool because your ceramic Powerball comes out of it, but it doesn't really look like a gumball machine. It's not very well seen. It doesn't stand out. That's right. So it's kind of a combo mod because you add glass gumballs in there and it makes it look like a gumball. And then you've got a lighting board that's built into it for different shots and modes that will light up differently. So it looks like an active gumball machine. A lot better. I love that. Big upgrade. It's a great game. And if you ask a lot of people, what are some of the best mods out, that's going to be on the list. Because it stands out. I mean, the gumball, it's kind of central to the game, the play field. The Powerball is fun to play, too. Yeah, it is. All right, number six. Number six is, now Greg and I have been going back and forth on this one. He's not crazy about it being on the list at all, but it transforms this game. So when you guys talk about the shadow, think about the shadow right now. What do you think about? You think about a couple of things. You think that's a pretty damn good game for the money, and you also think about that's an ugly-ass translator. Alec Baldwin we all love him doing Trump but man him doing Shadow it's an ugly Translight it's an ugly, all together it's a beautiful art package but that Translight kills it for a lot of people so Arik out of California who designed in every art package with Zach saying I disagreed with him about putting it on here you were just saying just the art alone yeah art alone is it enough to be considered a mod Because his art, every art package he does is fantastic, man. I mean, it's great, the ones that he has released. So he released an art package for The Shadow that includes a new trans light. It is a huge improvement. Don't get me wrong. It's a huge improvement. It makes the game beautiful. It does. It really makes the game beautiful. Plus, he took the time and care and consideration to use his art based on where the LEDs were in the back of the... It's really thoughtful. It's really cool. It makes it comic book-esque. And then you get some decals with it and everything. Pulls the whole system together. So for us, the Auric Shadow Art Package, there's nothing like it. That thing's awesome. So he makes the ACDC Helen Package, which is an honorable mention. That thing is awesome. And the Star Trek Package to get rid of the cast, which I don't mind. I don't mind that cast either. The Shadow one, though. That's so beautiful. So beautiful. So that was number six. All right. number five a lot of people's favorite games metallica uh but the snake mod that pin graphics did where they added the plastic they added uh the decal for the ramp to make it look slithering back up that ramp it adds a lot to it visually it can't it can't not be there no because where the hell's snake coming from yeah it's a turtle head yeah it's just poking up out of the playing But this gives some continuity to where it is. That's right. I like it. We also added Measel Mods doing the fangs and the tongue decal. As a package, that Metallica Snake Mod is so cool. You walk up to the game, John Youssi a freaking snake crawling up the ramp. So that is awesome. If you have a Metallica out there and you don't have that, go get this mod. It's easy to install. It looks fantastic. Agreed. So that is number five. All right. in announcer voice number four so number four is what on pin side when i was reviewing a lot of people think is the best mod ever made but it fell to number four on ours uh it's tron's mini arcade cabinet pinball looking is the person that that i believe if i'm wrong with these i apologize but pinball looking makes this mod where over the scoop of uh tron he makes this it's a stand-up Tron game. Yes, the arcade. Yeah, it's lit up. It looks like it's working. It's got a screen in it. It's really awesome. Which overall, it is fantastic. It's a game within a game. Yes, it is. It's really cool. It is neat. I don't know why we couldn't move it up. It just didn't because number one. Yeah, number one was fantastic. So let's talk about number... So that was number four. Tron's mini arcade cabinet. If you guys have Tron, you probably already have it by now because it's it is a very very very popular mod um let's see you know what we missed one hold up oh we did it sorry guys let go back i skipped number eight damn it no no two number eights because we moved one This is the part that we pretended didn happen So number 8 We do it Ty Number 8 We go back We'll give a shout out to number 8 to both Modfather and Back Alley Creations. I messed it up. It's cool. We have top 11 this time. Modfather and Back Alley Creations makes, for the Wizard of Oz, the walls and the witches' well. mod. Which is beautiful. It's really cool. It's an already loaded game but it makes a difference. Yeah, it should be there. We got two papers. It's okay. It's worthy of a top ten as well. Pretend we didn't do that. Alright, where did we leave off? We're at three now. Sweet mother of Mary. That sounds right. Number three. Mike D's Creature from the Black Lagoon LCD mod. Which is an only beautiful and neat yeah but it's much needed oh yeah in a lot of cases for the people whose creature has gone black he's gone bluish and blackish yeah he's he's turning old he's aged so it has taken it and it's given it a facelift yes into the 21st century yes which uh some people i mean they just literally needed that mod yeah and it's i don't know expensive mod very expensive But who cares? It's awesome. It's awesome. It not only gives you, doesn't fix the hologram, it creates, he did an art package where the creature comes up. But also there's video, too, of the swamp and different things. And it has a title logo on it. That mod is just, here's what's crazy about that mod. That mod makes me want Creature from the Black Lagoon. I agree. It makes me want the whole damn machine, just the mod. But the bad thing is, is though, he's not making them any longer. Is that right? Does this sound right? I never can keep up with it. I can't either. That's the bad thing about some of the mods. Yeah. People make them because it's just pinball lovers. That's right. It's not a company. It's not a manufacturer. And so sometimes you just like. Making pinball mods is tough. Shit comes up in life. It's hard. It's hard. It's hard. Yeah. So, you know, and it's time consuming to make a lot of these mods. Yeah. So sometimes, even though you're charging a lot for them, it still just doesn't justify the time that people put into these mods, man. I love that mod. And the expense. Yeah. It makes me want that game. So isn't that crazy? I don't know how he sells it for a couple hundred bucks, but for a couple hundred dollar piece to make me want a $5,000 machine says so much. Well, that's the thing too, is like if you didn't have an option, if your creature was bad, then I think some people would steer away from that game. Yeah. But the fact that there is an option. Because that's the toy. I mean, that's the thing. Yeah, it's neat. That's what you're looking for is the reveal. That's right. So that's number three, and it's easy to put that at number three. That's really cool. Number two is our favorite $1,400 game, Judge Dredd and the Dead World mod. The Dead World mod is made by Pinbits. The original Judge Dredd has, it's not a ball locking mechanism because once it hits this orbit, you guys see in the pictures, once it hits the orbit, it would just go and the crane would pick it up and it would put it back into play. But for the Dead World mod, what it does is it creates a captive ball lock there. A physical ball lock. It's an actual physical ball lock now. Which, if you had the choice, most people are always going to go with a physical ball lock. Yeah, everybody does. Nobody wants something you just hit something. It's all ball lock. It's so cool because it's a planet, and then you lock the balls on that planet, and throughout the game, it's orbiting. That's my ball that I'm about to play. And I honestly think that's a number one on a lot of people's list. An overlooked one, I think. It is. Just because it's like, it's Judge Dredd. Yeah, but it's still, it's almost a necessity to make the game a little better. Are there still people out there that have Judge Dredd without that mod? I probably wouldn't be able to have it. How could you not have it? I'm so cheap. Oh, stop. Tight-ass Timbo over here. So yeah, that mod is number two, and it's worthy of number two because it changes the game in a magnificent direction. Agreed. So number one, can you guys guess what it is? Our number one game-specific modification for a pinball machine is Tron's EL Wire Kit for the Pro version. Whenever John Youssi the Tron LE version, John Youssi the light-up ramps, and it's the coolest thing ever. and then the pro the pro is out and people are like well this why do i not have that why is it not on my game yeah yeah so eli is uh eli is the designer of this but pin bits is the one that sells it or reproduces it but again this mod makes me want tron yes it makes me want the entire game it is gorgeous one of the most beautiful things ever well and and it's part of the movie it's The look of that is the feel of the movie. It's an integration. The light wire, light cycle. I mean, all the fluorescence and the neon. And here's the thing I love about this mod and why it's number one. It's because it works just like the LE. Yeah. It's not a cheap imitation. Yes. When you go up to it, I can't tell the difference between an LE sometimes and a pro. Yeah. With this mod on. But it's the most needed mod on a game. I think that's why it hit number one for us. Because it's literally, you have to have that on that game above all those mods. So for Tron, the cabinet mod, again, very cool. It's awesome. But like you said, it's not needed. You have to have that for the pro. Some guy would sell, I just, if you have a pro with that one, you're wanting to sell your game, just invest in the damn thing. You'll get substantially more money. I would think so. There was one guy trying to sell a Tron pro locally. and I thought, hey, I like that game, but I would love it to have that mod on it And he was sitting on it a little bit longer than And Tron are seeming to go for I mean even the pros are going Until they come out with the vault Yeah Side note are they going to come out with Tron vault first or ACDC vault first What's your bet on that? I think I'm hearing ACDC. I think so, too. I think so. I think so, too. Which I'm mixed on what I feel about these vaults. I think some people... I'm not mixed. I think they're freaking fantastic. Keep them coming out. I don't know. I like some of them, man, but I think the people who, like, if I went out and I bought a Tron for $6,000, $7,000, $6,500 for a Pro or something, and then they turn around and release the Vault for a bit cheaper. It devalues the game and the rarity of that game. I feel like, I don't know, I'm mixed on the Vault things. I'm not at all. I don't know if I'm wild about that. Spider-Man Vault? Awesome. I like the Spider-Man Vault. Awesome. I like Spider-Man Vault. I don't know, man. I kind of like the collectability. Awesome. Looks really good. I like all of it. I'm mixed on it. I'm mixed on it. I like the ability. All right, so that's our top ten list. I hope you guys enjoyed it. We usually do a worst three of our top ten list, but because these are pinball people, this is you, this is other people. And a lot of people put so much hard work and dedication into making mods. We didn't want to razz anybody, man, because all mods, I mean, they're good. Making pinball mods is hard. It is hard. Right? So, yeah. Proton streams. Hey, my proton streams are nice. They are nice. You guys should check them out. I just don't want to make them anymore because they're a pain in the ass to make, and I don't make any money off of them. Mad respect right there of what it takes to make mods and everything. Lazy ass respect for not making. So for you guys on the list of my proton stream for Ghostbusters, I'm sorry. I will make them at some point. It's just they're a lot of money, and they're a pain in the ass. It is. Yeah, I don't know. So we give respect to everybody. That's why we didn't want to do a worse three mods is because. We can't razz on people. You guys, there are some ugly-ass mods out there. But we know there's heart and there's hard work put into those mods, so we cannot stand the right razzity of you guys. People might not like my ProtonStream mods, but they're not hideous like some of these mods are. No. Some of these mods are bad. Some of them are kind of bad. It's okay. I like everything. We love you all. It's okay. But some of your mods are ugly. But we're not going to call you out. He's a dick. And I'm a dick. Okay, it's all good. All right, so top ten list next month will come out.
