## Analysis

Mike Boon visits the Grasley Garage to troubleshoot a heavily damaged Fathom machine that had its playfield swapped by a previous technician. The restoration team diagnoses multiple electrical gremlins including a sabotaged solenoid expander board (with scratched traces), corrosion on the MPU, intermittent switch issues, and shorts. They cannibalize parts from the Centaur machine (solenoid expander, lamp driver, solenoid driver board, and an All-tech MPU) to isolate problems. Meanwhile, Knight Rider restoration work progresses with new playfield parts, decals, and cabinet work ongoing. Centaur eventually boots and plays, with discussion of its rare tilt warning feature.

### Key Claims

- [HIGH] The playfield technician who swapped Fathom and Centaur playfields did substandard work, causing extensive electrical and mechanical problems. — _Mike Boon intro and ongoing troubleshooting discussion with Dutch; Mike explicitly says 'he didn't do a very good job' and discusses widespread issues throughout the video._
- [HIGH] The solenoid expander board on Fathom had its traces deliberately scratched off, making it unrepairable. — _Dutch and Mike discuss examining the board: 'he scratched off all of the traces so you can't even repair it' and joke about submitting it to 'PiNbALL DeGENeRaTES of the Year.'_
- [HIGH] Removing the third ball from Fathom's trough allows it to boot, but adding the ball back causes the solenoid expander to activate and lock up the machine. — _Dutch demonstrates this repeatedly: 'remove the third ball...we're booted up. Perfect...the ball back...solenoid expander clicks.'_
- [HIGH] Centaur was the only machine Mike had successfully played since the swap work began. — _Mike says: 'I played a game on this...when it first came in and I have no idea how you managed to do that. This thing barely boots up. That was the most and only functional game since you've had this here.'_
- [HIGH] A physical short circuit in Fathom activates when the playfield is latched down, causing solenoid expander issues. — _Dutch and Mike discover: 'As soon as it's latched, it starts activating the solenoid expander board. So, we just got to find the short.'_
- [HIGH] Centaur has a rare tilt warning feature built into its code, one of the first (possibly first) pinball games to include this. — _Dutch: 'there's actually a warning built into this game...Not only is this maybe the first game with a warning.' The warning triggers before tilt ends the ball._
- [HIGH] The Knight Rider restoration is a full cabinet job with new playfield, extensive part replacements, and custom drop target decals. — _Mike and Kevin discuss: 'that is a full cabinet job and new playfield' and show new parts including rails, pop bumper caps, coin door bits, and I-75 custom decals by JC._
- [HIGH] Centaur and Fathom restoration work will be brought to Ontario Pinball Fest (upcoming event). — _Mike announces: 'Ontario Pinball Fest is coming up in a few days. And this is all coming to the show.'_

## Transcript

Yo, I'm heading over to the Gravely Garage. If you haven't been following along and watching every single one of my videos, which you should be, I only have 1,400 of them. But, if you haven't watched every single video, then you may or may not know that over at the Gravely Garage, Kevin and Dutch are working on a Fathom and a Centaur for Shawn Bennish. He had the playfields swapped. The guy who did them, I won't mention any names, but he didn't do a very good job, okay? I'll just be polite about it, and I'll just leave it at that. And Dutch has been tearing his hair out trying to get these machines to um function properly and work properly electronically, mechanically. There's There's a lot going on. So, I just got a call from Kevin, and he asked if I could pop over and kind of help troubleshoot this Fathom. I'm surprised they moved on to the Fathom, cuz last time I was there, Dutch was tearing out his hair over the Centaur. So, I don't know if that's resolved or what, but either way, let's go check out the progress on the Fathom and on the Centaur, and I know that the Knight Rider project that Kevin is doing for uh JC is probably nearing completion. And that is a full cabinet job and new playfield, and it is looking incredible. So, I don't know if there's anything else to uh investigate since I've been there last, but uh we're going to head over there and check out the action. I'm Mike Dimes, and this [music] is Pinball Shenanigans. All right, I made it over to the Grazy Garage and hey, what's up Dutch? Not much, not much. Dealing with this. Yeah, well so I mentioned on the way here like you have moved on to fathom so I was suspecting that Centaur might be done and it is indeed finished but we'll circle back around to this. Hopefully it stays fixed as you play your first test game on it. We'll see if the I work out any gremlins or not but this to be holding strong but this is definitely not. I played a game on this I don't know whatever a couple of weeks ago or something when it first came in and I have no idea how you managed to do that. This thing barely boots up. That was the most and only functional game since you've had this here. Somehow I played the only game that worked. Um and now Dutch is fighting some serious gremlins. Uh first let's just take a quick peek. We've got um you know, original solenoid driver board here without you know, any of the modifications really. Uh what's going on here? We got uh tiny fuse just barely uh bridging the fuse holder there. No, I didn't even notice that. And uh we got a chip replaced here and then we do have the original MPU with an old battery. I mean, it's not the original but And some hackery. There is uh some evidence of some pretty significant corrosion on here. So that's not great news. So tell me what else is going on with this thing. [clears throat] Okay, so let's let's start with how it works. All right, let's see. Turn off the flash, we don't really need that now. And the best part about this is that there's a good chance this actually works because every problem's intermittent. Okay, so yeah, watch it work perfectly fine now. Okay, so it's dropping all its targets and instead of booting up it just gives me this. Mhm. And it's a bigger number every time, by the way. Oh, lovely. It's been like four different numbers. 31 period. It's like a credit dot almost. You think so? And it mirrors the credit display. Yes. Weird. But what I do is I remove the third ball. And look at that. We're booted up. Perfect. So that's weird. the ball back or in this case with my finger, the solenoid expander clicks. Yeah. And now it is mirroring the credit display again and I can't even start a game. Very weird. the switch. Stupid question. This is supposed to have three balls? Yes. Okay. So now we're in proper game play. If I But as soon as you close that switch It changes the music. Yeah. kind of locks that up. Does this work? I don't think any of the solenoids will work. Mhm. Not positive. That's And that works fine. of functional. Cuz that works fine because this switch isn't active. Right. But as soon as that switch is active Say I hold this down, it it locks a few lights on if you can see that. see that. Oh, that's weird. Cuz it's the I think the solenoid expander has something to do with switch illumination or something. I'm not Oh, yeah. I think so. close that. Okay. And that doesn't register. Now it registers. Mhm. Very bizarre. Let's have a look at that solenoid expander board. Yeah. Oh, this is the best part. Get ready for this. So it I have it removed for special effect here. Check out Check that out. We might have to submit this to the 2026 Pinball Degenerates Hack of the Year. So let's point out the issues. Number one, this is supposed to be a small IC with some resistors and diodes there whatnot. Two, he scratched off all of the traces so you can't even repair it. Mhm. All of this is very pretty. This is This is done very well by a professional. That's amazing. So isn't even the issue cuz if I unplug this, the issue would still happen. But I can't imagine this is helping. No, I don't think so. Okay. There's a a lot of gremlins and we're going to fudge around with this for a little bit and see if we can figure something out. It's just It's a total [] show right now, really. Yep. Okay, so in switch test here um when you activate this switch So this switch and this switch are actually supposed to be tied together. So these two switches do the same thing. They're supposed to show up as number three on the display. They show up as zero. Uh and not only that they turn on the solenoid expander and these three light bulbs. So that ain't right. But we think we have a solenoid expander in manual says Centaur that we are going to temporarily borrow and is actually coming in clutch. see if we can swap it out see if that makes any difference. But uh the fact that this doesn't register as anything registers as zero. It's just weird. Why it why shouldn't do that? This prop rod has a little bit of a a whammy. It's a heavy play field, but a term for that. It's called a little jank. There is a solenoid expander. It was hiding. We didn't think there was one even though the manual said there was, but it is there. Now this is what a solenoid expander board is supposed to look like. That's probably not supposed to be there. That might be an after-the-fact add-on, but see the little IC chip there? The little diode and resistor there. All right. Centaur solenoid expander board installed. All right, let's see if this makes any difference. I wouldn't be surprised if it doesn't. Get some clicking. That's even worse now. worse? Yes. Oh, we got the 30 on the display. And all And only like two of the things dropped. Okay, so if we remove that ball. Yeah, this is even worse. Oh, no. Uh-oh. Quick side note, Ontario Pinball Fest is coming up in a few days. And this is all coming to the show. Not World Cup. Not World Cup, but El's Garage Band returning. is going back for 2 years in a row. Uh Flintstones, Jurassic Park Data East, and Computer Space. All right, I'm going to take a little break here, but that solenoid expander board um we threw it in solenoid test and only like half the solenoids are working now, so we're going to put the other one back in, and what we're going to do is steal the Alltek MPU from Centaur and put it in Fathom. So, I got to research uh the code, the dip switch settings to switch from Centaur to Fathom. And let's rule out this uh MPU. Right, Ronnie? Just for fun, I just wanted to show sort of a a view of the arcade, just how stuffed it is. There's so much going on. We'll just do a quick walk around here because it is awesome. But uh Dutch just pointed out that the [clears throat] newest toy has joined the lineup. There was some shuffling going on. They do You guys do need to um Sell a few things. Sell a few things because a few things are for sale already. Buy Yeah. You can buy the Flintstones at the show. But here it is, the White Star Collection. The Simpsons Pinball Party has joined the lineup officially. Oh, you can also buy the sign. What else can you buy? El's Garage Band. There you go. That'll help clear out some space. But you guys just keep buying like crazy, too, so you guys are your own worst enemy. And where's your uh Rocky and Bullwinkle's? Uh garage. In the garage? Okay. All right, old motherboard has been removed. New motherboard installed. New Alltek board installed. Let's uh Please don't blow up. See what happens here. it. It cuts into my profit margins. Yeah, we don't want to go backwards in progress, which is the usual direction I go. All right, let's see if anything changes here. Not sure what to expect. Solenoid expander is doing its weird thing again where it's lighting even in. All right, we are installed now. Here we go. Try it again. Okay, what are we hoping for exactly? To have it boot up with all three balls in there. Okay. Come on, fingers crossed. Do it. Come on. What? You [] Wait, let's let's try one thing. Let's turn it off and on and see if we get our seven flashes. 2 3 4 5 6 7 The other board was doing that, too, though. So, why are we getting nothing? These are blinking. No displays. Let's remove this. Okay. Okay, you know, just because we have this here we're going to steal this from Centaur as well and pop it in there. The more things we can rule out the better. At this point we're going to have a new MPU, lamp driver, and solenoid driver board and that will help rule things out. All right. Let's power this on with the solenoid driver board with the Alltek and see. I don't expect anything different's going to happen. But you never know. Got all three balls in. Nothing. Okay. showing any issues with the solenoids, but I didn't think there was anyways. Okay, well that's good. So we remove our ball and then we've got action. Okay, so the other thing we're going to check now is that uh here is the switch matrix and What do we got? What do we got? This play's not funky anywhere. Ooh, that's something. We've got the outhole the left of the outhole, the two left and one right of the outhole, top saucer. Position one, position two, position three. In the in the trough. And then yeah, top saucer, right saucer. These are all sort of tied together. So maybe we need to check all these diodes and maybe this connector here. Okay, we're just wiggling some wires around and messing with stuff and uh now No! It just was working. It was working. Hold on a minute. We had these switches registering. Okay, wiggle some more wires. Wiggle that connector in the top right here. And I will hold this down. No, it was just working. for like 3 seconds. It was beautiful. Oh, man. We were about to do a gameplay test and everything and All right. Well, it's teasing us. Okay, we think we have some progress here. With the playfield lifted, let's close this switch. And look at that. It works. Now, lower the playfield. It might not work when I lower it when it's already low, it stops. Let's see. Wait, wait, wait. Let's see if it works at this position. Okay. Now, a little bit lower. Wait, wait. in the way. Oh, look. Oh, no. It's actually working. So, currently it is working, but let's get it all the way down. Look at that. There it is. We found the short. As soon as it's latched, it starts activating the solenoid expander board. So, we just got to find the short and then we'll be in business. Okay, we are not 100% conclusive here, but we do think we had some sort of short. We have to ID exactly where it is, but we might have at least temporarily resolved the issue. Hello. Look at that. we solved it, kind of. Yay. Hi, doggies. Hello. You want to go check out the garage with us? All right. Let's see what's going on with the Knight Rider while Dutch swaps some boards over. Ooh, wow. Look at this. Brand spanking new. Better than. Oh, [] That was you this time, not me. Look at that. That is beautiful. So, yeah. Need to sandblast all this stuff. Um this stuff. All getting sandblasted and either powder coated or spray painted. Yeah. Wow, look at that. All this stuff, so. Oh, my god. That's impressive. Oh, you're going to sandblast the chimes, too? Yeah. Cool. All of them have pretty rusty chimes. Yeah. Have a look at the before. Oh, look at the apron, too. Yeah. Very nice. Have new parts for that. Oh, and shooter gauge. All kinds of playfield parts. That is a bucket of goodness right there. Ooh, nice apron decals. Coin door decals. Apron cards from Johnny G. Oh, that is gorgeous. New rails, new pop bumper caps, coin door bits. Oh, nice. And I heard saw that JC made some custom drop target decals for this, too. Oh, yeah. Just imagine that right there. Yeah, JC had his buddy or something print off some of these uh I-75 I-75 decals to go with these brand new drop targets. Very uh nice. Yeah. It's going to be killer. Yeah, playfield done. All right, so bottom side is looking done. And Well, we'll take a peek at the top side. You still have yet to get your plastics in or are they here yet? Uh they're somewhere in shipping, so. Okay, on route. Yeah. And then where the side rails are the little red Uh they're sitting on in this pile of Okay. It's your Harlem workbench. Yeah. Uh Tails of the Arabian Nights old parts. Uh so, here's the old plastic set. Look at that. Wow. That's pretty rusty. Do you reuse these metal things? Uh yeah, I'll have to polish those up. Yeah, that'll take some elbow grease. I don't even know. I've never had to buy these before, but You got to call me there. Yeah. [laughter] Like I said, I don't even know what to call them. So, look them up. What do you got here? This is cool. It's the frog. Oh, yeah? Yeah. What the hell is it? have no idea, but it's pretty cool. It is pretty cool. Sweet. Well, I'm going to try not to step on stuff, but Night Rider is uh looking killer, man. Let's check out the head, too. I kind of just waltzed right by that. Beautiful. Nice job, man. These lines are perfect. Yeah, they look good. It's beautiful. The head frames are over there. Oh, yeah? That's the swing out door. So, Yeah, this is the door that swings out like on some Evil Knievels. Maybe like a Xenon style. I don't know how many cabinets they had the swing out door on, but I don't think it was that many. But yeah, this cabinet was the one with the giant hole in the bottom. Oh, right. You had to replace the whole of the cabinet. Yeah, the bottom's done. Replaced the back cuz it was particle board so now it's plywood. Oh, yeah. Okay. New back, too. Yep. This is a lot of work, man. I have to sand the bottom. That's just over spray right now. Oh, okay. I wonder how many hours it takes you. You don't really keep track. But maybe you don't want to. [laughter] That's a mean What is like a 100 hour job to me, this thing. Yeah, this is uh well, there's like a million pieces so Yeah. Wow, what a transformation, man. This thing is coming along amazing. Right, Mabel? Don't you agree? Well, we got the boards reinstalled back into Centaur and we're about to do a gameplay video, aren't we, Dutch? Nope. Why not? Sound doesn't work. We broke the sound. We? I mean me. So, after much uh tomfoolery, we seem to have managed to get the sound to work again. Yay. The speech, the background sound, the sound effects. So, uh let's see if they still work cuz, you know, anything can happen. It is pinball and you breathe on it wrong, things stop working. It does have a little bit of a like white noise in the background or static, whatever you want to call it. White noise. But uh Crank it up to two. Let's crank it up. It's probably loud now. But this is the finished product. Uh Dutch has got some apron cards. Oh, yeah. They're just flattening out right now. And Dutch gave this a nice shop job with all the transparent uh Titan rubbers throughout. And uh is it supposed to just be epileptic right now? Yeah, I guess that is the attract mode. I'm really hoping that these two lights turn on and aren't just out now. This may not be the finished product. Oh, [] We may uh have be adding to the to-do list here, but it is looking great. The red displays are awesome. This is pretty close to the finished product. Pretty close. We are almost there. Well, let's play a game and see if we can find some more things to add to your to-do list. Don't hurt your back. Awesome on wheels. No nudging. All right. I got got a few GI lights out, it looks like. Oh, yeah. Okay. Oh, yeah, one right there. Good eye. And yeah, the two lane ones are in fact out. At least those are a nice easy fix. Yeah. Dealing with the the speech and sound and the talk and talk board and say it again board. I had to deal I took me 2 weeks to figure out why the GI fuse kept blowing. I couldn't really test them for the longest time. What did it end up being? Shorted like improperly installed light socket. Wow. Oh, I oops. What? Uh, our captive balls on the wrong side of these targets. Oh, that's cuz when we lifted the playfield Yeah. we can drain out and remedy that. I can do double duty here filming and fixing. There we go. Easy breezy. Oopsie cost me a ball, you bastard. Oopsie daisy. Oh, and I dropped the keys. Oh. Now, I can't close the coin door. Which key is it? Uh, the smaller one, silver. is. All right. Okay, here we go. back in action. Now, I can hit the captive ball. What do you like some of the accents on this game? Ooh, that was like an accidental top pass. Like the flipper toppers are awesome. There it is, captive ball. And the pop bumper cap toppers, those are cool. Oh, and missed my nice save from the out lane to the in lane. Okay, let's do another Captain Ball. Oh, yeah. We do have to spell it work. Let's do that. We need the B. And if you hit the S, if you do it you don't. If you do it in order, it immediately launches a ball. Okay. Oh, that's spotted the drop target. Let's hit that. One more shot away from multiball if I don't eff it up. Yes. Give me a power orb. Now, how do I add the rest of the balls? All right, so if you hit that four, cuz you knocked them all down in order, Okay. like 1 2 3 4 in order. If you knock down four, it will like release, I believe. Okay. Hit back. Yes. Hit. And then if you to try and get cute about this four here. Aw, not cute. You can backhand that green target to spot it. No. [***] All right, so now, does the same still apply? Yes. It's very free form how the multiball works in this game. Oh, that's tight. You see that that green standup will uh spot it. Oh, okay. Oh, or I just hit it. Okay, so Now you see releases there. Oh, yes. So before you go for that, you can build up more orbs. So, I wanted the tilt sound effect. Oh, the uh bob is out of this. I have to install the bobs though. But it still works. So if you spell these out of order, it increases these, Yeah. which you can cash out at the release. Spell Did you say in order or out of order? Out of order. In order, if you spell it in order, it will immediately launch one. I see. But if you spell it out of order, it will them. Yeah. And then if you have four ready and you release them all at once, it will do 1 2 3 4 Oh, that's cool. I like I like that. I never knew that. That's awesome. I saw of just figured this out while playing it. So I could be a little inaccurate. You can move it. It's also on wheels. So it's very it's it's weak back friendly. You don't have any orbs built up though. You They they reset every ball. Which might be how it's adjusted right now for the setup. Well, Centaur is 97.2% done. And it's actually pretty damn awesome. Okay, Dutch was just telling me that there's actually a warning built into this game. And uh we just found it here. Where is it? Game over tilt. If you turn on conservative, switch 23 off. Tilting No, player may tilt first time and keep on playing. So not only is this maybe the first game with a warning, 23? It is I think I think it was 23. Is it meant to be on or off? Uh one moment. Switch 23 you want to be on cuz we want it to be a liberal. Liberal is like tilt? Uh Is it the warning? Or is it conservative? No, we want conservative. Switch 23 off. Yes. Okay, so let's see the back of this backglass here. Look at that. Warning. That's cool. I never knew this. Dutch, you've taught me so many things. Okay, we're going to do this manually. Let's check out this warning. Okay, so Dutch is going to like move the thing. Hold on. 1 second. 1 cuz it's going to have its own call out, too, probably. That's what I That's what I meant. And then, um, we're going to see where it says warning here. Okay, 3 2 0. No class human. Okay, same as the tilt, but it did not end the ball. Look at that. Now, he'll close the switch one more time. Tilt comes on. And voila. It's very cool. Maybe the first game ever Oh, with a warning. It just ended the game. Oh, tilt That was ball one. Tilt ends the whole game. That's why it's called conservative. You think adding a warning wouldn't be conservative because it ends your whole game.
