### Signals

- **[code_update]** Chicago Gaming Company released significant code update kit for Cactus Canyon 27-28 years after original release, adding new modes (saloon fight), enhancing gunfight functionality, and quick draw mechanics. Original ruleset was incomplete and would have scored ~2/5; new version scores 3.5-4/5. (confidence: high) — Dr. C detailed comparison: original code 'just out of the gate, I think I would have given like a two because there wasn't much to do. With the updated rule set, they did a lot to make the game better.'
- **[product_concern]** Cactus Canyon's gunfight sequences feature intensely bright strobing lights that are problematic and potentially seizure-inducing. Mrs. J experienced vision issues and disorientation during gunfights. (confidence: high) — Mrs. J: 'THE BLINDING LIGHTS... when the gun FIGHT WAS LIT... I could not like... it would be strobing and I'd be like I don't know what I'm doing.'
- **[gameplay_signal]** Cactus Canyon's playfield layout and shot design are highly approachable for casual/beginner players with clear shot lines, but this leads to early boredom for advanced players. Game excels at inclusivity but lacks depth. (confidence: high) — Dr. C: 'It was easy to learn... I got bored with it after a time.' vs Mrs. J: 'This was a very good machine for me. It was easy to learn. It was easy to shoot.'
- **[gameplay_signal]** Cactus Canyon's standout mechanical elements include the saloon door mechanism (added in CGC remake to reveal the big bad Bart toy), pop-up bad guys, and the quick draw multiball sequence. These are cited as the best moments in the game. (confidence: high) — Dr. C: 'I love the design of the bad guys... That's like iconic, and it's the best part about this machine.' Mrs. J on quick draw sequence: 'That one was really really good... That was where I got most of my points.'
- **[market_signal]** Chicago Gaming Company has completed at least four classic Williams remakes: Cactus Canyon, Medieval Madness, Monster Bash, and Attack from Mars. Community reception varies significantly by title. (confidence: high) — Mrs. J: 'So there's like there's the four Chicago Gaming remakes that they've done. Cactus Canyon, Medieval Madness, Monster Bash, and uh Attack from Mars.'
- **[sentiment_shift]** Despite mixed personal reception, both reviewers acknowledge Cactus Canyon's value for casual players and see merit in maintaining approachable games alongside complex modern titles. Represents shift toward appreciating game diversity. (confidence: high) — Mrs. J: 'There's room in our arcade for all of them... I still want older machines like this in our arcade.' Dr. C: 'You enjoy[ed] it more than I did... You didn't hate it.'
- **[design_innovation]** Cactus Canyon emphasizes memorable callouts and corny parody humor ('The locker's lit and SO AM I') as core sound design strategy. This approach makes the game feel iconic despite generic western music background. (confidence: high) — Dr. C: 'The callouts are really what make it... They leaned into that corny parodying style of the old west... because of that because I remember a lot of the callouts it feels iconic to me now.'
- **[personnel_signal]** Lyman F. Sheets Jr., original Cactus Canyon designer, passed away in 2018. Code update responsibility transitioned to Josh Sharpe (of the Sharp family), continuing the design lineage 27 years after original release. (confidence: high) — Dr. C: 'The code was designed by one of the Sharp kids... who took it over from Lyman F. Sheats Jr. who tragically passed away in 2018.'
- **[historical_signal]** Cactus Canyon marks a significant historical transition point: it was the final pinball game Bally Williams produced before discontinuing that product line in favor of Pinball 2000 technology. (confidence: high) — Dr. C: 'This was the last game that Bally Williams made before they decided to transfer over to Pinball 2000.'
- **[collector_signal]** Limited direct feedback from arcade/bar visitors to Pinball Pursuit's Cactus Canyon. Those who played it found it 'kind of fun' but not exceptional. Suggests moderate appeal in public play vs. home collection contexts. (confidence: medium) — Mrs. J: 'We didn't have many people come play it, but those that did were like, "Oh, this is kind of fun." Yeah. But they weren't like blown away by it.'
- **[competitive_signal]** Mrs. J (casual player) scored better on Cactus Canyon than Dr. C (advanced player), indicating the game's design heavily favors approachable play over skill-based differentiation. Inverse of typical pinball dynamics. (confidence: high) — Mrs. J: 'I was getting better scores sometimes than you.' Dr. C: 'She was beating me.'

## Transcript

Let's do in three, two, one. Go. Welcome to Pinball Pursuit. I'm Mrs. J. And I'm Dr. C. And today we're going to be talking about the latest Pinball machine we had in our house, Cactus Canyon. Not the latest game to come out. No. The latest [laughter] one in our household. So, Cactus Canyon, small bit of history. This was the [music] last game that Bally Williams made before they decided to transfer over to Pinball 2000. I did not know this. Uh and as such, it shipped with incomplete code. Oh, also did not know this. Uh and so it it shipped out with a code that wasn't all that great. Just recently, I think it was at the end of last year or early this year, Chicago Gaming Company who remade the game came out with a code update kit. So, how long had it been since it was released before this final most recent update? 27, 28 years. That's insane. Yeah. So, the code was designed by one of the Sharp kids. I forget which one. Um who took it over from Lyman F. Sheats Jr. who tragically passed away [music] in 2018. Oh. So, um the game that we had was a Chicago Gaming remake. It was a it had the Lyman F. Sheats Jr. code upgrade in it. Nice. Love that for So, we did not I've played the original code. I think you've played the original code like once or twice. one of the first machines that I played outside of our Vegas [music] trip that really got us hooked. It was the one that I played locally. Yes, cuz they have a couple of them around here. So, and it was also a Chicago Gaming Company remake. Oh, there we go. So, I don't know if I've seen the original. Oh, okay. Yeah. So, as [music] always, we're going to do the same five categories, five points each. Theme, look, sound, [music] design, and rules. And we're going to rate every single one. Yep. Uh let's start with the theme. The theme. So, I mean, there's nothing wrong with an old Western theme. True. it's it's a fun theme. I mean, they had a lot that they could put in there and there was a lot that they did put in there. I feel like they they did the theme justice. I mean, if you were to come up to me and say, "Hey, do you want to play an old Western-themed pinball machine?" I'd be like, "Sure, you know." Not over the moon excited, but I think that they did the theme well. I think they did the theme well. Have you seen many Western films? No. Other than you know, you haven't even seen that film HAVE GOES WEST. DOES THAT COUNT? I MEAN, it's technically [music] a Western. There we go. So, I've seen a Western. That's probably about as Western as I get. Um there was like The Magnificent Eight or something. The Magnificent Eight. I saw that one. [laughter] I think that's about as Western as I get. Sorry. Okay. No Maverick, no No. any Westerns? When you say Maverick, I think Top Gun. Oh, that's fair. [laughter] That's fair. So, no. Okay. Cool. I've seen quite a few Westerns. Um I enjoy a good Western film if it's done right. Um not all of them are my favorite. They're it's not like my favorite genre, but I enjoy I enjoy it. I think that they did a good job with an old Western theme. They took a lot of like the clichés and they put them in there, but they kind of poked fun at them, which I can appreciate. [music] Um but it's not like it's like you said, I it's not like I'm rip-roaring to go play a Western-themed pinball machine. It was fun. I feel like it's a universal pleaser. It is. I don't know that anybody's going to be mad about that theme. No. Not at all. Um so, I think they do really well. I like like when it comes to theme integration, having like the bad guys and the gunfight, that's like the the best that they do. Some of the poly stuff kind of gets a little old. Um You didn't love Polly? Well, [laughter] Yeah, didn't didn't love Polly. The mine cart and everything? cart was fun. The mine cart The mine cart was fun. I thought the train was fun. They had the saloon fight. They've got They've got a lot of, you know A lot of good stuff. Yeah. So, for me, I don't find the theme like super duper engaging. I don't find it offensive, either. So, what did you give it? I I give it just above average, 3.5. Well, I gave it a three. Okay. What were you going to say? I cut you off. I was really excited to give you my score for some [laughter] reason. I gave it a three. No, I think, like I said, I think for me, it's not like I'm mad about it. I think they did a little bit better than if you said like it's a basic theme, country, and they did a basic job covering it, I would have given it like a three. But, I think they went a little bit above Okay. with a basic theme, making it a little better. So, the combined 3.25. 3.25. Okay. The look. Go for the look. Tell me what you think. This has late '90s all over it. Yes, it does. It does not have some of the newer looks to it. I found the cabinet to be kind of boring. [music] I would agree with you. said Cactus Canyon on it with like blue. The backglass was okay. We had the one I know there's a couple of different backglasses. We had the one that had like the Bart gang in the back and like a Polly that's going [laughter] with a bad guy that's got his arm around her. The The playfield, like the old-timey sheriff, or I guess it's the mayor that's like giving you the sheriff contract, it's okay. The animations are are good, but they're not like great. They For a DMD, they look great. Mhm. I mean, yeah, you have to take into consideration the age, yeah. and the age and everything. I don't love it. I don't hate it. Yeah. Here we go. To me, I feel like it felt like classic arcade. And maybe that's because '90s and arcade they go hand in hand in my mind. So I was like this is like a classic arcade machine. There were a lot of cool things in there that made it I feel like feel cool. I mean it's it's hard to judge this machine in comparison to other machines that we've played that are all like 2020 late you know. kind of that more dynamic I feel outside. so it's hard but like taking into consideration no I think I think it looks really good. There were a lot of fun things like the the train the train that you know moves across that looks really cool. Um the mine cart hole you know the help and I think [laughter] that's fun you know the little yeah the animations are fun. Um the big bad Bart bass toy so a lot of these the big bad Bart bass toy. Uh sure. One of my only problems with the upgrade kit they put the saloon in front of him so you could see him. Yeah he he was a little hidden away. Yeah whereas in the original he was just there they put the saloon door in front of him. Yeah. Um I do like they have the little lights in front of it. Like I said like I I think it looks good mhm it's just not like wow. Yeah and I mean there's there's little things that they integrated on the side like the log flume portion off to the left is a log flume like westerny? I mean When I think of the log flume more from Utah there's a there's a an amusement park here called Lagoon and they have a log flume and so I was like [laughter] is this Lagoon themed? I don't know like riot rabbit right and [music] Yeah and that is that westerny? No it's like the south southwest. Just kind of wondering where that came from but maybe it doesn't really There's the old Chris Farley western spoof film where they go over a waterfall. Oh maybe that's it. A lot of there's a lot of western like cartoons and stuff where they go over a waterfall. Okay. I guess that's what [music] it's trying to do I don't know. I don't know I I was just wondering if it was westerny or not. [laughter] I guess we've established that it's not that it's just Mighty baby? There's just a lot of clues. a rapids. Yeah, there we go. Uh, so for me again it doesn't offend me but it doesn't wow me. I give it a three. Okay, I give it a three as well. Okay, well that's that's easy. Yep. [music] We both give it a three. Look at us agreeing. Aw. Aw, it's been a while since we've done that. I know. Look at us. [laughter] Okay, sound design. Sound, um, I've said a few of them the callouts and things. Yep. Exactly and uh, yeah there's just a few iconic lines. My brother's favorite callout is in this game. Yes and I keep on thinking about it. [laughter] The locker's lit and SO AM I. THE DRUNK GUY. YEP, YEP. And so there's just a few Welcome to Cactus Canyon. You know, just a few iconic lines that I will still remember. Other than that, I mean there's some basic generic westerny music that plays in the background. Um, I mean that's that's all I really remember. Oh, and that pew pew like the the gunshot I think sound great. I think the people cheering when you get like a quick draw yeah, yeah, yeah. is really good. Um, I like that. The which is not quite The Good, the Bad and the Ugly but it's like trying to be. Yeah. When you're going to do a gun fight I think that was done really well. Okay. Um [music] like the gold man. Yeah. That's right. That was really well done. Yep. Um compared to other machines I I think this [music] has a pretty decent sound like the callouts are really what make it. Yeah. They really are. It's very unique in its callouts and they leaned into that corny parodying style of the old west and that's something that I can that I can really appreciate. Yeah. And because of that because I remember a lot of the callouts it feels iconic to me now. I give it a 3.5. You gave it a 3.5? Yeah. Okay. I gave it a four. Oh, okay. There we go. So I think the I think the sound is good. So, that's 3.75. There we go. Um yeah, I think the sound just came together. It does well. Yeah, it's good. It's good sound. All right, I think this is where we're going to differ, design. Design. Um I wrote the outer lanes were rough. For some reason, I KEPT ON HITTING those outer lanes, and that's probably a me problem, but hungry, hungry machine. To to to that. Yeah, but I did like that it was easy to spot shots, and it was easy for me, at least, to hit shots. It was easier for me to progress through this game to get to the multi-balls and stuff. [music] There wasn't a weird shot that I couldn't hit, where I feel like a lot of machines, there are like there's always that one ramp that I'm like I just I can never get it. Exactly. And so, I actually really like the design. I thought it was a great layout. I thought it was great for me. Um it was very approachable. It is very approachable. Yeah. It is very approachable. They're all right there in front of you. Yeah, and maybe that's [music] what you don't like. And I got bored. [laughter] I got bored with Cactus Canyon. Yeah, because it was a little too easy. too easy. I just I got bored with it after [music] a time. You know, I I felt like the saloon door with the Bart was probably the most interesting thing to me, cuz it would like sometimes be open, sometimes it would be closed, with those new rule set and everything. I really enjoyed that aspect of doing those battles. I love the design of the bad guys. Yes, the ones that would pop up out of the field. I love that as well. That's like iconic, and it's the best part about this machine and how it was designed. [music] And the rules will also get it to you in a second. Do well with those. But that design element really does make the game stand out. Mhm. My My biggest problem with that, and maybe this should have gone in look, I'm not sure. Yeah. But and maybe it's going to go in rules, but I'm going to put it here in design. THE BLINDING LIGHTS [laughter] LIKE THE THE GUN FIGHTS YES, when the gun FIGHT WAS LIT. SUSCEPTIBLE TO SEIZURES? YEAH. KNOW. AGAIN, I'm putting this under design cuz I didn't know where to put I didn't know where to put it. It could go multiple places. So, it's landing here. putting it here in design. It drove me nuts. I could not like I would have a gun fight lit and it would be strobing and I'd be like I don't know what I'm doing. [laughter] Um so, that part of the design, like that choice to put those lights right there and make them as bright as the sun was just not great for me. Yeah. So, I love the bad guys, hated the lights, and the fan layout got kind of boring for me. So, I'm going WITH A 2.5. [screaming] AND THIS IS WHERE WE DIFFER. I'M GOING TO say four. Four? Wow. FOUR. I KNOW. AGAIN, AGAIN, YOU KNOW, ME REPRESENTING all of the less intense pinball players out there, maybe the more beginner or just casual players, I guess. This was a very good machine for me. It was easy to learn. It was easy to shoot. I was getting better scores sometimes than you. Yes, she was. I think that I am more prone to epilepsy. She [laughter] with the lights going off. it on medical conditions. [laughter] She was beating me. I had a small blackout. I got to tell you, those lights got [laughter] killed me. Just like A 2.5? I feel like that's the lowest SCORE YOU'VE EVER GIVEN. [laughter] NO, I'VE GIVEN SOME TWOS BEFORE. OH, WOW. I think I gave a 1.5 once. Oh, on what? Uh to one of the Stranger Things ones. Oh, okay. That's right. That makes sense. Um I just didn't love it. I YEAH, I GOT OKAY. It would be lower if those bad guys weren't as cool as they are. And you did get bored. I I don't feel like I've seen you [music] get bored with a machine in our house before. You've You've had machines that you didn't love, but you still played them a lot. This one you kind of just [music] I did. I got bored. Yeah, you just didn't go down as much and play. And that's okay. It's [music] just what happens. And then we got a new machine and I played I'm still playing it No, all the time. All the time. Exactly. Um so yeah, this is what it is. 3.25 is our combined score on that [music] one. There we go. And the rules, last but not least. What did you think? So, I spent a lot of time on the prior rule set and the new rule set. Okay, this will be a good comparison. think the original rule set just out of the gate, I think I would have given like a two because there wasn't much to do. It was not [music] great. With the updated rule set, they did a lot to make the game better. Um the Polly saves are still the same, the multi-balls are still the same. They added more functionality to the gun fight, I feel. Interesting. Um they added more to some of the bad guy like shootouts, the quick draws and stuff. They added the saloon fight which wasn't even in the original code. Um Is the saloon fight the one where you get the multiball and all the dudes pop up? No, that's that's the um I don't even know what that one's called but that's like the bad when you get all the quick draws done. Cuz that one's my favorite but carry on. Go back to that. that one's amazing. That one is amazing. That is amazing. I love that like when you get all the quick draw all four quick draws and then it starts the quick draw multiball whatever. That was where I got most of my points. That's where I did very well. It was a very cool moment. Like that moment It was very fun. It was really really good. [music] Yeah. And so um I appreciate that a lot of those changes. The Marshall kind of mini wizard mode which you would get if you got all um of the Polly's done and I think there's the left over I can't remember the code. I I have a script written. That was really cool even though I never did well on it. [laughter] Yeah, I could never do well in that mode. So, again, the original code I would have given like a two cuz I think I would have gotten bored even faster. Yeah. As it is, this code is good. It's good. Mhm. I don't consider it great. Yeah. to hear your thoughts. I just thought it was really fun. I again, I like all the bad guys that pop up. I I like the different multi-balls. I like the gold mine multiball. I like the What do we say? Showdown multiball saloon fight? I can't remember. showdown. Yeah, the showdown. I loved the how you could defeat the bad guys and hit the big bad bar in the corner. Um don't know. Like there was there were a lot of fun elements to it. A lot of different things that I could accomplish. Like you talk about mister wizard modes and things. I'm probably never going to hit [laughter] But I felt like I was able to accomplish things throughout the game. yeah, yeah. Without, [music] you know, getting frustrated or overwhelmed like I'm never going to get there. So, I mean, again, fairly easy rule set, but it was also very easy [music] to know what you needed to do. I feel like that's what gets me hung up on a lot of machines is like he'll stand there and he'll be like, "Well, now you got to hit this. Now you got to hit the flashing lights." And na. And like but no, this one was very clear. Okay, you need to hit this ramp. Okay, now do [music] this thing. And so that's what I really appreciate about these rules is just very easy to comprehend. [music] It is true. They're not convoluted like Rush's rules were. Yes. [laughter] And if you saw my review, you know how I feel. So, what's your What is your score? I said 3.5. 3.5? Okay, 3.5 is good. Yeah, it is good. Um I I'm probably just going to go with a three. That's fine. A three like I said, I think the original code would have been not great. They brought it up and they made it good. Again, I got a little bored and I think that's why it's a little bit lower for me. But that showdown moment and the quick draws are so and the gun fights are so cool. Yeah. It is And now you're making me reconsider my my [laughter] Cuz that We can always change. Don't worry. going to go 3.5. Cuz I do think that the gun fight and the quick draws and all of that stuff is are such great pinball moments. Yeah. That you don't see in a lot of other places and it's memorable. Yeah. And for that I'm going to I'm going to bump it up. I'm going to bump it up. I'm going to go 3.5. And I kind of feel bad about being a little harsh, maybe. And this is going to be a decent score. I don't feel like it's super harsh. But I feel like the newer machines and the older machines have totally different feels, but I feel like there is room in our arcade for all of them. Oh, 100%. 100%. It's hard to compare this to newer models. It doesn't have the same flash. It doesn't have the same feel. The callouts might be a little, you know, the sound quality isn't as much there, but I still want older machines like this in our arcade. Me, too. And like we have Cyclone in our arcade. Exactly. And we love it. It's classic. It's got like [music] no rules, though. Exactly. [laughter] This at least has some rules. And so I I don't know where Cyclone would show up on our ratings like this. I don't know, either. There's such a nostalgia factor to them. Exactly. So, that doesn't necessarily mean that if they get a bad score that they're not going to show up in our arcade. Do I think Cactus Canyon's going to show up in our basement? Probably not. Well, here's the thing. So, there's like there's the four Chicago Gaming remakes that they've done. Cactus Canyon Cactus Canyon Medieval Madness Medieval Madness, Monster Bash, and uh Attack from Mars. Oh, gotcha. I didn't realize Attack from Mars was. Yeah, also uh Chicago Gaming classic remake. I would put Cactus Canyon above Medieval Madness, and I know that that is Really? That is heresy. That surprises me as well. That is heresy. I I think I like the theme of it better. What about Monster Bash? Monster Bash is like my number one favorite. I've never played Monster Bash, but I hope to someday. Um we need to. Monster Bash of the And I know that's also heresy. People put Attack from Mars as like this, you know, amazing Attack from Mars is number four for you? Attack from Mars is my bottom one. I don't love Attack Attack from Mars isn't the one with like the holographic No. No, you're What is that one? That's a space one, too. I think Oh, you're thinking you're thinking the So, there's Attack from Mars and there's Revenge from Mars. Oh my god. Revenge from Mars is the sequel to Attack from Mars that has the holographic Okay. That one we've played at the museum. So, I played that one, but I don't think I've played Attack from Mars at the museum. Yeah. Um they have it at the they go to I'll make you play it next time. play it. Okay. Um So, for me, Cactus Canyon would be number two on like [music] the that gaming Gotcha. Okay. But, I would put I would put Monster Bash as my favorite of those. Well, we should play it. Monster Bash is really good. [music] I don't think there's one around here. Um Quarters has one. Huh, Quarters has one. So, we'll have to go play that one. Deal. Um so, those those that's my favorite one though of these the Chicago Chicago Gaming Classic. SO, ANYWAY, ANYHOO, BACK TO the topic at Back to the topic at hand. [laughter] Sorry. Cactus Canyon, I'm going to attempt to do math. Let's see if he gets it right. if I get it right. brain. That's a very not true. Okay, so those again He does math much quicker than I do. Okay, according to my math, and I will correct it here if I'm wrong. Uh this one gets 16.75. 16.75? Okay. That puts it kind of Where does that put it? I think I put it on Do you think we have a list? Our list. We're going to grab our list. I might be the one that has the list, but that's if Pinball Pursuit rankings. 16. what did you say? 75. Uh that ties it with Metallica. Well, I know Metallica would have been up because Cody loved it. Yeah, I know. That one we need to redo. [laughter] Um what's it right below Rush? I mean I honestly I that is accurate. We've got and I'm sure you'll list this here. We've got number one is Batman, and then it would be Cactus Canyon. I think that's accurate. like that's accurate. That's accurate. I mean Rush I put it above Rush, but we all know that there's a difference [laughter] of opinion here. Uh but that's the only one that you would change. I think that's for me pretty accurate. And when I ranked this, even though it has the same score as Metallica, I'm going to I'm going to put it on the spot. Yeah. We can do that. It's going to be I don't know which side. [laughter] I forget which side of the screen it goes on. I think it's actually over here. We'll see if you're right. I'm going to put it right here. Bingo. Yep. Above Metallica. I feel that's accurate. I'm happy with where it lands. I Me, too. Me, too. Again, this is a very fun game. Yeah. I had a great time with it. You enjoyed it more than I did. Yeah. Um But you still you didn't hate it. I didn't hate it. I just got a little bored. Yeah. And that's the great thing about I think that Cactus Canyon we didn't have many people come play it, but those that did were like, "Oh, this is kind of fun." Yeah. But they weren't like blown away by it. Mhm. Again, there's place in our arcade for that. People love Cyclone. Yeah. And there's the great thing about having a home arcade someday is that you're not going to be focused in on one machine and that's it for 6 weeks like we are. Yeah. We definitely have that thing where we're on one game. That's all we play. Yeah. It's different with Cyclone here and there. But yeah, it's this is what it is. Well, anyway, um thank you for a delightful discussion. Oh, thank you. Uh and thank you for joining us. And if you like this, please subscribe and ring [music] the bell thingy and all the other stuff that you're supposed to do. All the things that YouTubers say. [laughter] It really does help us out, though. And until next time.
