## Transcript

Where are we going? Jersey Jack! And what are we going to do there? We'll get pinball machines and get it in our field. And how do you feel about that? Excited! Yeah? Hi, I'm Pat Lawler. I'm currently the head of game design and engineering at Jersey Jack Pinball. I've been lucky enough to be in the coin-operated game industry designing games for 40 years. In that time, I've gotten lots of correspondence from people. A few weeks ago, Jersey Jack received a letter from a young gentleman named Leo. And how did you get invited? I'm writing a letter. Oh my goodness. Okay. A thoughtful letter, handwritten, five pages, about things he thought we could possibly improve with the game. After I shared that mail with the people in engineering, everyone was touched. That letter made us realize that the reason we had gotten in this business was to design games that people loved and thought were creative. We decided to bring Leo to our factory here in Chicago. And what you're about to see is Leo's visit. As always, thanks for playing our game. Hi, my name is Bill Grupp. I'm a software engineer at Jersey Jack Pinball and I've also been in charge of helping set up the new factory in Elk Grove Village. So we invited Leo to come see our brand new factory and the first thing you do if you want to go into the factory is you have to go see Rosa, our human resource manager, to get an ID. So as a way for Leo to remember his trip to our factory, we presented him with a signed Willy Wonka playfield. Yeah, we gave him a playfield. We got everyone to sign it that was in the office that day. And I just was thinking, if I was an eight-year-old kid and I was into a game like that, and I was able to get a playfield like that and throw it on my wall, that would have just It's been an amazing experience. So Leo also got to meet Pat Lawler, the game designer for Willy Wonka. We asked him to take a picture with his whole family in front of our brand new sign with his playfield. And if you watch closely, this picture will be important later. Well, this is our brand new pinball factory. When you build a pinball machine, you need lots and lots of parts. Come into the stock room So this is where we store the parts until we ready to use them This is the first station and what do you start with on a pinball machine? What's the first part? playfields. And the first thing they do is they put in these little things called T-nuts. And so you put them in and then a person has to pound them in and that's so you can put in screws from the other side to bolt stuff down. So this is where we start building games. So and this one happens to be a completed playfield. So this one's all done. But this This is where you would start building a play field. You take that piece of wood, mount it in the rack, it's just an empty board, and then they start adding parts as you go down the line. So on this side, these are called sub-assemblies. This is where the big parts get put together. So this is Jose Fernandez. He's actually in charge of this whole area. So that is our pinball factory I thought it would be really cool to give Leo and his family a candy code in Wonka So we decided to take the picture I put it into the game and pushed it to a machine that was in our office. And I was able to show them the candy code that I just created them. Yeah, so a candy code is a little Easter egg that I built into Wonka that is an homage to Mortal Kombat 3 combat codes. Essentially, you put an Easter egg code in, and it comes up with a screen that has six boxes, and you can put up to ten different icons into those boxes, and then if you find a code, it does something. It shows you a picture, it puts a message up, it has a few gameplay tweaks that you can do on the fly, And I just think it was just another little Easter egg I like to put in games. I think overall, his visit was just one of those feel-good moments that you don't often get at a place of business. And I just really felt good about it. Just hit the overall visit. I thought it was really cool. I just want to thank Leo and his family for coming out. It was a great day and it was a lot of fun.
