## Analysis

Nick Baldridge explores the Roto feature, a unique mechanical innovation found in three United bingo pinball games (Caravan, Starlet, and Stardust) from 1956. The feature allowed players to rotate eight numbers around the center number using a front dial to create winning combinations, controlled by a time tree that locked out the mechanism after a set ball. This represents a distinctly United mechanical approach that Bally never replicated.

### Key Claims

- [HIGH] United had the Roto feature in exactly three bingo games: Caravan, Starlet, and Stardust — _Nick Baldridge, host, stating as factual knowledge of United's game lineup_
- [HIGH] Both Caravan and Stardust were released in February 1956, making it unclear which came first — _Nick Baldridge explicitly states both games came out in February 1956_
- [HIGH] The Roto feature allowed rotation of eight specific numbers (13, 22, 18, 21, 19, 12, 20, 14) around the center number 16 — _Nick Baldridge provides specific technical details about the rotatable numbers_
- [HIGH] United Stardust is unique in having two separate Roto units because it has two separate bingo cards — _Nick Baldridge describes the Stardust configuration as distinct from other Roto games_
- [HIGH] Bally did not copy the Roto feature in their bingo games — _Nick Baldridge states this as a key differentiator between United and Bally bingo mechanics_
- [HIGH] Caravan's back glass features dancing harem girls and artistic elements like palm trees, tents, and a jar — _Nick Baldridge describes the Caravan artwork in detail_
- [MEDIUM] United games locked out balls either before the fourth or fifth ball, with no 'after fifth' lockout option — _Nick Baldridge discussing the time tree mechanism and lockout timing_

### Signals

- **[design_innovation]** The Roto feature represents a unique mechanical approach to bingo card manipulation that United developed and Bally did not replicate. The rotating number mechanism controlled by a front dial and regulated by a time tree is a distinctive technical innovation. (confidence: high) — Nick Baldridge explicitly states 'This was the only way to mechanically reposition the numbers on the back box in a United game' and 'This was a feature that Bally did not copy'
- **[design_philosophy]** United's design strategy emphasized unique mechanical features (like Roto) rather than copying competitor innovations. This contrasts with their approach to single/multi-card bingo cards. (confidence: high) — Nick discusses United's selective approach to innovation, noting they made a copy of Bally's Magic Squares unit but otherwise pursued proprietary mechanical solutions
- **[collector_signal]** The three United Roto games are positioned as highly collectible machines with strong aesthetic and mechanical appeal. Active market interest is present (Starlet known to be for sale). (confidence: high) — Nick Baldridge expresses desire to own one, notes specific machine (Starlet) currently for sale but inaccessible to him, and recommends all three as 'excellent additions to anyone's collection'
- **[historical_signal]** Documentation of 1956 United bingo game design innovations and technical specifications (number rotation sequences, time tree mechanics, lockout timing) that distinguish United's approach from Bally's. (confidence: high) — Detailed technical breakdown of the Roto feature mechanics, specific number rotations (13, 22, 18, 21, 19, 12, 20, 14 around center 16), and timing mechanisms
- **[restoration_signal]** Nick notes he has never worked on a United game, suggesting these machines may require specialized knowledge or experience. The Roto mechanism complexity may impact restoration and maintenance. (confidence: medium) — Nick states 'unfortunately I've never worked on a United game but if I were to purchase one I think I would want one with this unique feature'
- **[content_signal]** Episode 99 approaching podcast's 100th episode milestone, with announcement of special content planned for next episode. (confidence: high) — Final statement: 'But don't forget, tomorrow is our 100th episode. Don't forget to check back on our website for something special.'

## Transcript

What's that sound? It's 4 Amusement Only, the EM and Bingo Pinball Podcast. Welcome back to 4 Amusement Only, this is Nicholas Baldridge. United had a unique feature in three of their bingos, Caravan, Starlet, and Stardust. This feature was called the Roto feature not to be confused with the Roto target of Gottlieb fame The Roto feature allowed for the eight numbers surrounding the center number to rotate around Controlled by a dial in the front of the game you could move the numbers left or right in order to make a winning combination these games boasted a time tree which would lock out that mechanism after a certain ball was shot again unfortunately I've never worked on a United game but if I were to purchase one I think I would want one with this unique feature this is a feature that Bally did not copy and United in most of their games were either a single card or a three card or a two card bingo and in one instance they made a copy of the Magic Squares unit that Bally was using But aside from that This was the only way to mechanically reposition the numbers on the backbox in a United game It also very unique and interesting to watch The last game with a roto feature was Caravan, I believe. That came out in 1956. Stardust also came out in 1956, so I'm not sure which was first. Actually, to further confuse matters, they both came out in February of 1956. All three of these games have really very interesting artwork, and they would be excellent additions to anyone's collection, I think. beyond that they have the reliable mechanisms that United was well known for especially in mid-1956 they had been producing amusement devices for a very long time and were making some of the most desirable ball bowlers at this time so the roto feature again would be highlighted in red on the backbox. There would also be a time tree, which was shown typically on the right side of the back glass, and it would tell you when your control was going to be locked out. Now, the numbers that would rotate would rotate around 16, which is always the center number on any standard bingo layout. 13 22 18 21 19 12 20 and 14 were the numbers that would rotate Each of the three games that sported this roto feature had additional features which made them unique. Beyond that, the artwork on each is totally different. and I'm definitely in the market for one of these and in fact I know of a Starlet for sale but it's too far away from me unfortunately so I have not gone out and picked it up. The United Games, since they don't have triple deck scoring rely on single sets of advancing odds. But as with the typical ballet, single sets of odds, the artwork is integrated very well into the back glasses. Caravan, for example, has a beautiful back glass with the advancing odds being integrated very well into dancing harem girls' special robes, as well as a palm tree and some tents and a jar. It's just a very attractive back glass. Now, United Stardust is unique in that it has actually two separate roto units because there are two separate bingo cards. I suspect that it is fairly easy to make a winner on this game although it probably one of those just games because although it appears easy due to the time tree and the lockout and the ability to spin your numbers, it's probably fairly likely that you won't make good winning combinations. these United games would lock out the balls either before fourth or before fifth there was no after fifth so the roto unit was disabled after the last ball was shot regardless, so you weren't allowed to reposition your numbers after the end of the game like you were in some ballet games well I hope to own one of these Roto games one day and honestly all three of them are very attractive for different reasons they all have great artwork but the scoring potential on each is totally different well thank you again for joining me my name again is Nick Baldrige you can reach me at 4amusementonlypodcast at gmail.com and you can listen to us on iTunes, Stitcher, Pocket Casts via RSS, on Facebook at For Amusement Only Podcast, on Twitter at Bingo Podcast.
