And so I was working on React, which is their first video game, and they were trying to get me to say 10,000 bonus points. points. Could you put the ball put the thing in the little chamber down here, the reactor and as it crossed the thresholds it would say 5,000 points, 10,000 points points. Cool. Good news for speech right? Because your eyes are over here. Yeah, absolutely. So I'm sitting there and you had no tools nothing except a dictionary of phonemes and then the notion in the one page of describing how this horrible chip works so I'm trying, you know I'm a junior, I'm a son of a junior, I'm trying shit. I tried shit for like three days. And at some point, after you try stuff for three days, you think you've got it. Yeah, absolutely. So I would grab it. Come here, come here, come here. And I'd come over to my workstation and I would play it. Yeah. And then they would go to me and go, what are bogus points? Bogus points? You son of a bitch. So I was going insane. So finally, I mean, we punted on that. I just said that 10,000 points. Yeah. It doesn't need to say bonus. But we were so frustrated. I just said, well, fuck it. What if I just put random numbers into the chip? And that's what Cupid's Speech is. Really? That's all it is. Wow. And so, you know, the number. The more you know. The number that I, if you put in five or ten or however many, you get all these different crazy phrases. Oh, wow. And it sounds great, as opposed to trying to get it to say anything. An actual word, which might sound off-putting or weird. And the other thing is that there's a way of adjusting the pitch on it, on the board. So in Q-Bert, we have the low sound, which is the big bad enemy, and the high sound, which is the very annoying little enemy, him. And then Q-Bert is every man, so he's kind of in the middle. See, this just sounds like it's patronizing me every time it goes, Wow! It's like you did it. Well that's wonderful. Slow go flop. See, yeah, on the video game you're going off the thing. And then some tech guy named Rick had this great idea. He took the pinball knuckle and installed it into the video game cabinet down at the bottom. Oh, really? So you go, whoa! Dude, that's awesome. So you get this kinetic and sound thing. It all came together. Kiefer was a happy accident. That's awesome. And Jeff Lee, the guy who did the art, and Warren Davis, who did the program. And this was his first game. Huh. Good work. Oh, yeah. That's awesome. Great stuff. And I had this voice done before they ever had the art done. Oh, okay. So they sort of... You didn't know what it looked like, what was going to happen. I had no idea. I had this crazy-ass voice, and I wandered around through the shop late at night seeing what people were doing. And they got this guy jumping around on that thing. And I squawked up the war as a boy if I got something I got it. Yeah, right This is gonna go great with this hairy weird brown. Yeah. Well originally that nose He was gonna the artist wanted him to fire projectiles. I don't know sure looks like he would the original yeah The game was called no sir. No, Joseph But Warren being a new guy and a very shrewd guy All the programming involved in putting projectiles out keeping track of those keeping track of the stuff Yeah. Too much? Couldn't make work? Yeah. And Warren was a very smart guy, and he just said, this is my first game, I'm going to make this happen. So he limited it down to just him bouncing around on this pyramid. That was cool. And then the guy who was head of engineering said, you know, it might be interesting if you change the color of the things. That you're standing on, yeah. And it kind of just organically came together. That's awesome. It was very cool. Really a happy accident, man. Yeah, yeah. So, I mean, the first game, Reactor, got made, but it wasn't really accepted. Yeah. It's a weird kind of fun game, but it didn't happen. Second game, spent eight months on, didn't even get made. Wow. That's rough. This, for that division, was, Cuba was the game number three. Yeah. And, yeah, it's just like out of the park. Yeah, and everyone knows it, man. Yeah. Absolutely. Well, and it's frustrating, you know, just work for hire. I got nothing to say about Cuba. But he's in, like, feature films now. Yeah. Right. And some of the things they do with it, I'm like, no. France loved American boom machine, so that kept it happening. Pretty great, man. And then years later, you get Larry DeMar and Eugene Jarvis, and they figure out, hey, there's a computer in here. Maybe we can get you something. Yeah, up it up. Crank it up. Make it do some crazy stuff. The rest is history. When I think about the work you did on this machine, I just got one word. Wow!
