That intro music you're hearing right now is the song Fill in the Blank by Car Seat Headrest. That is a classic Nudge jam on the original Nudge playlist. You can find that on Spotify. As always, I'm Ian Jacoby aka DocMonday, the editor-in-chief and publisher of Nudge Magazine. With me is my co-host, Shane Told of the band Silverstein and the Lead Singer Syndrome podcast. Shane, how's it going? Yo, man. How you doing? I'm terrific, dude. I'm feeling awesome. Maybe a little bit better than you. I know you had a big weekend at MGC and I know that you got into the sauce a little bit. A rare Ian drinking moment. Yeah, I know. I was telling my friends afterwards, I'm like, I had three drinks and I was like, as in that's a lot and they were like, yeah, okay, great. But yeah, three drinks. I had like a twisted tea and two bushlights. And you know what? I'm here to say Bush Lite's surprisingly good. BushLite is totally good. And it's something you can't get everywhere, I don't think. Like, maybe you can if you really look for it, but I know in the Midwest it's like super popular. Yeah, it's a good Midwestern beer. We were actually talking about that too, how like kind of different areas have their regional kind of like crappy beer. Like what's the one, Yingling or whatever? The Kind of totally in that Pennsylvania maybe like in that genre on the East Coast And you know there's like anchor steam that people drink I know like in San Francisco That's like a beer that is sort of in that same genre But yeah, I mean Bush light for me at MGC was like it was going down real easy So see the thing about those cheap beers like what's another one like Keystone light? That's another that's another one or in Buffalo because I grew up near their Genesee The You see around I gotta say I know people want to hate on these beers They're like ah, I guarantee you all the beer drinkers we have which is probably a lot of people listen definitely You make a blind lineup like have a little have a little fun with your friends, you know get like six to ten light, you know even not even light like just regular lager beers and Try to blindly guess them you will get you won't get any right You might think, oh, I've been drinking these beers like my whole life. Like you will not. I have done this many times. It is really, really hard to tell the difference. So when someone's like, oh yeah, like Miller Highlife is piss. I'm like, fuck you. Miller Highlife is delicious. Highlife was my go-to for years and years and years. Cause I just, yeah, absolutely. It's a champagne of beers. What more do you want? Absolutely. Well, or do you know Grain Belt Premium? Have you heard of that? I don't think I know that one. The It's really good. That's like a Minneapolis sort of very very cheap very light Beer, but yeah, we were just saying actually before we hit record that I'll speak for myself I don't want to speak for you, but I would actually prefer to drink a bush light over these like $15 super high alcohol beers that you like like a thick Yeah, lager or that stuff or like you mean like the I like IPA The When people drink the fucking voodoo Rangers Dude, they're like 9% I'm like are you trying to kill me right now? I don't know man I I got into the craft beer IPA thing pretty heavily About was it probably like 10 years ago now and that was like everybody's like oh I would never drink Of course light what a bunch of piss and you know everyone's like talking about who were the big players like stone brewery a brewing or dogfish head or these were like the cool I drank a for a while and after a while it was like a hot day outside and I was like I just I don't want to drink a double IPA right yes I'm just gonna drink a corona and it's gonna be delicious so yeah I'm a little out off off the IPAs now but I'm sure we got lots of people screaming at their radio well those those people are wrong and I just want to let you know you know where to find me I am NOT gonna back down on this opinion absolutely but bush light is blowing your stuff out of the water so The end of the show. If we have any brewers in our podcast audience, they should hit us up because I would love to hear your perspective. I'm not going to say that it is right, but I would love to hear it. Craft beer and pinball really do go hand in hand. That's the thing. There's probably some craft brewery owners listening to this being like, oh God, what are you doing? I know. Don't admit. Don't admit grocery store beer is good. Grocery store beer is not good. That's hilarious. That's what we have to say. And if you want to become a sponsor of the podcast, we're looking. And we found a couple. We're going to have some sponsors coming on board. You better be Bush Light. That's what I'm saying. No, I'm just kidding, guys. You can be whatever. You can be any old damn thing. We want you. If you mess with us, we mess with you, right? Like, I really appreciate our supporters and I've gone out on a limb for them many a time. So that's the kind of backing you would have with Nudge Magazine and by extension, the Nudgecast. The following is a work of fiction. So this year was interesting, right? Because on the pinball side of it, it was sort of, there was Portal that was there, you know, Evil Dead was there, those new ones were there, but, you know, Stern, they had, you know, they had some talks. I saw our boy Brian Eddy there, I saw Jack Danger there.achu Mopazac, P whipping & Dreak Portland articlestx na bar机 придy Makes,I strongly told my fans that XF廠p sitt风 found outar The game is coming. Everything is coming. Barrels of Fun too. They're also sending out emails to get people to take their factory tour and reveal their game. So yeah, lots coming. What a time to be alive, man. It's crazy. It was. And you know what? Even with sort of just – and I'll be totally honest with you right now. I didn't get a chance to play Portal. Oh my god, you didn't. You got down your call The game is a vendor party and it's all the people who bring games and like the OG folks and it's like most people can't get in. It was very funny. Comically it was almost like out of a high school movie. There were like three guys who were like, let us in man, let us in. But I was, but, and, and, and no one was letting them like it was so good. I was like, man, this is like, we need to make like a con movie or something about these guys trying to go meet Brian Eddy cause Brian was in there. But, uh, I, I, I was quite lucky that I got a pass that, that let me inside there. And so I was like, okay, pan inglés I think, I mean, it was the same as TPF. The lines were very long. I waited quite a long time to play it. And the guy in front of me had like a 10 minute ball. I see. Yeah, it gets a really long playing game, I think. And Princess Bride is that also that way. So maybe part of it is the P3 platform just is prone to that. But I also don't know if I agree with you about it being necessarily good marketing. Like, I've seen sometimes like I think when when Stern had Metallica remastered at was an expo. They were just having everyone play one Kundium, Kopper I am Can you compare notes on it? Well, I can. I mean, I watch people play it and I think it looks beautiful. It's a really beautiful game, I will say that. Like, I think Brad did an amazing job both with whoever is doing the screen assets, I believe it's still Brad, but how those screen assets are integrated and like you're sort of moving from room to room, I thought was really interesting. Like, and how they kind of have, you see a map of the room sort of before you make your way through it. Deancial podéis phenomenalme.com, pre-order direct mail document on half Excuse my bad..... The Shades all upset that I did well look man No Mgc is like for me It's as much about the social element and seeing all the like industry people and hanging out with them As it is about kind of like playing the games and yeah portal was You guys you had to bring some more to mgc maybe next year, but you know How many did they do they have they only had one but they had they had another one there with like interchangeable? How many days ago earlier, when everyone was chopped Judah Hisom York hey not keyword hed mari don't not Those Hurlbugs can take their rest in. You're the only person on guess note. Boast, the short story. I think what he's doing is probably in his basement lifting weightslistening to sun oh like with the lights all off like that's what he's doing right now oh man just embrace the darkness bug that's that's that's that's my advice to you it was super cool to see Brian Eddy that was a highlight for me I love that guy and he seemed tired I think like at the end of a at the end of a release This is 5'7 Shit, ockout! This is a very good paper. Jim Jigebody Januaryelaits.com Nick Clark co-produced by Jiggyhide JiggyDrive I don't know. I'm a fan of the pinball game. I haven't even gotten into the building up your stats and character and the whole insider connected save your game progress side of it yet. I just enjoy the game for shooting it and the toys in it and stuff. It's a lot of fun. For sure. I actually told him this and I think he took it as the compliment that I meant it as. I'm a fan of your game and I still really like it. So I'm like, dude, I cannot like I don't get through quests on my like ever. And that is hugely like inferior infuriating to me because like, I feel like I'm not a bad player, but I'm just like, I don't know if it's how the one is the one at lit that I play a lot is set up. But I told him and he kind of laughed and I was like, yeah, dude, but I think it's just like even beyond the code, I think it's set up really cool. The game is a really cool and fun game that both innovates as it feels familiar, right? Like, I think having the dragon sort of offset to the side but up very close is an interesting design choice. It's true, because almost every game when you think of like the classic mech like that, it's up the middle. Yeah, like that you bash in the middle. Yeah, I'm sure there's like tons of exceptions to this, but at least when you think of kind of the recent games or the Brian Eddy games. That's what I mean, his games, yeah. The game is always up in the middle whether it's Stranger Things or Attack from Mars or Madness. So yeah it is cool that he has this switch because I don't know all the shots are really fun in the game and I like that it isn't a fan layout either. And it's which which is I wonder about it because it almost seems like and this is me totally getting in his head he did not say anything about this but I wonder if part of the reason for that offset and then having right the middle shot is actually sort of a so there's the captive ball there that is like the dice roll thing and and then there's the excuse me there's the spinner that goes into basically a scoop that is sort of how you start every mode it's it's like the The pause for a lot of the game, a lot of it starts there. And I wonder if it was like he knew, like programming wise, that they would have to have that shot very accessible to like move the story along. And so even though a main mech would sort of be in that area, he knew he would kind of have to have that there and like figure out the rest of it. I don't know. So I yeah, I think also probably once they figured out that they wanted the dragon to shoot balls out of its mouth. Yeah, there's probably limitations if the dragon was too far back. The game interesting yeah yeah right you're probably because of however that um that you know it's it's getting the balls into the right yeah yeah so yeah that's that's my take on it but whatever they did it worked definitely and yeah and it's an awesome game and I can't fucking believe there's another start game coming out in like a week it's crazy man um and the other thing I just want to say about D&D was what was cool about it when I was watching is like a big part of MGC is families and like wię garde ut-deseasonirementUnis Atteveryone kontapianks爆 компьют Brady Tamara Stone Ryan şuye sanctuaryומן đã chơi consiste Bra לפ You can also play it, I don't know much about it. You're not a kid, you're an old man, dawg. That's what I'm saying, so, yeah, I think, I think the fact that that, that theme, that brand, that license has such a resurgence right now, someone's playing it. It's, something is happening, maybe it is younger people, you know, like you saw Magic the Gathering, like that, that's now transcending generations, I think D&D is, is probably even bigger than that, maybe. Well, and the other, the other cool thing I wanted to say about it, so I think you know this, but Kale, really it's Rachel's, uh, project, I think, that she's spearheading, but she's basically doing a pinball D&D campaign. Have you, do you know this? Electric Bat? Yeah, yep, Electric Bat is having a D&D campaign, you like have, are rolling characters and doing all this stuff, um, and I told Brian, I told Brian Eddy about it, and he was like floored, he like, was like, ah, that's so like interesting and cool, so. I mean what Rachel and Kale are doing for pinball right now is like really cool I mean for sure just they they Their podcast that they doing monthly all the stuff they doing on social media the tournaments They're running just everything is like it's really really great you talk about a steward of pinball They are like right at the top of the list and Why don't they open an electric bat in Las Vegas? How about that? It's just up the road. I mean throw it out there I'm putting it out in the universe, maybe someone will hear it. Kale listens. Why don't they open an electric bat Vegas edition? I'll help out with it. Would you? Yeah. Oh, you would? Okay, that's what I was going to ask. So you would be involved in some way. That would be sick. I love that. I love that idea. I love that idea for you guys. signature dialogue Theиров Blackwater мин기우치 아니 toch decidesinker расс Slide, or libanese who do you call it? I was not going to try to dap him up and just be stupid like I always am. And I didn't realize he was like one strike away from leaving it. It was a strike tournament. It was a strike tournament. Was it 4 players or head-to-head? It was 4 players but 5 strikes. But I think he got 2 strikes for taking last place. Yeah. Often that's how it is, yeah. Yeah, yep. Like 0-1-1-2 sometimes. All the time, so yeah and he was fighting for his life I think it was ball two on Walking deadline and he was in fourth place at the time and I think he had three strikes So I was just like be and then all of a sudden I was like well nope yep Definitely in like got a baby. It's good. You took his mind off the pressure a little bit I think he lost, but yeah, I mean I Mean he didn't win the whole thing, but I think he actually may have lost that round But yeah, Rachel got a listed it you gotta listen to triple drain and find out what happened exactly The I hope he doesn't talk about it like seeing me from his perspective It'd be like this big might this big money. You might get shit on this big dumb clown. Just wandered in look You know but yeah Rachel Risto ran that tournament I Did a great job. It's grow. It grows every year. It's like grown from like 60 people the 90 something So yeah, it was super there must be lots of Chicago land people that are really good at pinball I'm a fan of pinball and you know. Yeah, and there were a couple spots that opened and there was a dude who drove from Madison. That's like a two and a half hour drive in the morning just like because he heard that there was a spot opening up. So yeah, really, really, really great pinball scene. And for the other stuff like, dude, I saw wrestling. I watched this weird future tag thing where these like eight year olds were like beating the shit out of like grown ass adults, including my friend Rachel, who just got got like right away. So it's this game where you like basically hold up a baton that's like a digital can Right here, right inter schwier, change s days talk Все much what I'm going to hang out my friends at Accel and then there's like amiatvermijn Legations, Get Out, longtime from Hexol haydee and his绿禁 тут ka Sarakқi te sa-ha has datos i aidaogšè haijfë rè submitmaŋ оq å cui parmenhi Governor of the tetan Usually ask a portion is therefore Storm MyPIN animates I'm not sure if I'm the only one there. This is the only exclusive I think that I got this weekend, but this is an exclusive about this game. They didn't say the title. They wouldn't say it, but I do know that it's Kong. They said... Donkey Kong? No. They said the best artwork on a machine they've ever seen. Really? That's what they said. Zombie Yeti? They would not. They would neither conform. I was with Ryan Tanner Petsch. Written by Dion Petus The game is going to be sick. I know nothing about it. I just know that it's rumored to be King Kong. It's rumored to be Keith Elwin. That's the other thing I've heard, that it's an amazing shooter, but it's like no shit. I feel like it just can't... Especially because they know they're going up against Harry Potter, right? In terms of a competitor where the game is coming soon. Unless part of why this release is April and I think a year ago John Wick was May. Maybe they're trying to get ahead of Harry Potter a little bit too. Which would just be good strategy I think on their part. Regardless of... I don't think that says anything about the game being good or bad. I have no doubt in my mind, it's gonna be good. And, I mean, Stern, man. They rock. They rock. This is a terrible transition, but you know who else rocks? Daniel Herrera. Yeah, he also got rocked a few times too in the big leagues. He does talk about that. As a Brewers fan, it was sad to hear that a bit, but you know, also not, like, that's pretty normal for a Brewers pitcher to do stuff like that, so. The following content is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is coincidental and unintentional. The And like is quite good at it plays competitively in New York and yeah, wasn't it? It was just really fun to talk to him Yeah, I'm excited for people to hear it. And yes is a blast. So Enjoy, Daniel Herrera on the nudge cast All right, our next guest is an illustrator and graphic designer who spent 11 years playing professional baseball, including stints with the Cincinnati Reds, New York Mets, and my favorite, the Milwaukee Brewers. He's famous for his screwball pitch, which is definitely the funnest pitch to say, Also was the shortest pitcher to pitch in the Major League since the 1960s. Also a hell of a competitive pinballplayer, racking up wins in the New York City Pinball Leagues. Please welcome to the show, Daniel Herrera. Hey Daniel. What's up Daniel? Ian, Shane, how are you guys? I appreciate you having me on. Yeah, thanks for doing this man. This is cool. Are you excited for baseball season to be back now? It just started, we're like a week in. Is that like cool for you or are you kind of like, does that bring up weird things? I'm a little jaded for a few years, but I'm very excited. New York has been really great with baseball the last couple years, and I'm turning myself back into a baseball fan, so opening day is basically a holiday. So I'm glad I have some friends around to celebrate that as well. It's lockedclock goodiesprose I'm a Yankees human being. I'm a little more rough around the edges. The word. And, you know, playing for them as well kind of sets me into New York being a fan of them. But, you know, as I say fan very loosely, I'm more of just like I will follow baseball stories from around the league more than I will follow and die hard with one team. But my only perk of playing baseball now is that I get free Mets tickets about once a month. rainyuka'e King, jv Obama'e Poethes성이zeugkhunoy monster b melow Sus sheer ML melancholy literature organisms-transcriptavision.tit temporary翅zo printer frame, safe.j contenido годаOno, Parkальное moduleads,!".wlimodансp puppygrabandmediieteat 110, aceptetko,.…? But I think it's funny, a lot of people in the pinball life around New York don't know that I play and I don't tell people that I play baseball. So just randomly I'll have somebody like, hey wait, what did you just say? You played where? And they're like, oh yeah, I played for the Mets. And they're like, in the minor Leagues? Right, yeah. It's really funny when that news finally breaks for some people. This is a credit to being an unassuming person. I think this translates between baseball and even pinball as people who can turn on that focus and execution that it takes to succeed in those environments. I see that in pinball players as well. Maybe not like, you know, it's obviously different. Facing a batter and being like, he's trying to do whatever he can to murder this pitch, right? You have to be like locked in but how do you use emotion and use the things that you're feeling you know in the moment but still allow yourself to kind of focus up and like do the thing that you have to do and execute? Well a lot of those things in the in baseball and that I learned for you know my entire you know young adult life playing baseball is is just about repetition the more you do it you know the better you're gonna be in the moment and the more you fuck up The more you fail, the better you're going to get and the more insight you're going to have. But I think about the parallels between baseball and pinball all the time and just kind of try to put myself in a certain kind of mindset of not being too nervous or just enjoying the moment when it's happening. and there's just a lot of like you know when for baseball like I'm running onto the field in a like a tie ball game and there's runners on base like that shit can really eat you alive but you know if I'm down half a billion points on the third ball you know in a competition and I need to score I can't be like whoa this is this is too much I can't handle this right so there's just there's just like so much that I'm like all right like I kinda like put my hat down a little more. I get a little mean mug and you know, you just kinda have to work it. It's funny because you know, I'm a professional musician, right? So I have the same elements of nerves in my life, I guess. Like you know, when you go on stage and sometimes like you go on stage, you don't really have the voice that day, right? Like you're not 100%. Same way that you might come into, you know, a tie, a tie ball game and you might have pitched like, you know, you pitched a lot of games in 2009. Can I Just Say Partyquote Like Calif essen i mean baseball obviously The Maybe less so and like a big music festival or something, but it's still like it's a much bigger stage But isn't it funny how the nerves? Can be the same no matter what you're doing Even if it's like a miniscule thing because at that moment it matters to you without a doubt I think the the pressure you can put on yourself can be a more insurmountable than you know The people around you or anybody watching. Yeah, I think I think the first time I kind of like stepped on a profile that was really nervous, but there was like 200 people there. And that was more nerve-wracking to me than going into my debut in Philadelphia where there was like 45,000 people. Like I could care less about 45,000 people. Isn't it weird too how like I'll play a big show or something and it would be like thousands of people or whatever, but if like my mom's there, it's like everything's different, you know? It's like one person Can change your feel of it too. It's like it's it's such a strange strange thing. Yeah, you know in a roundabout way I'll kind of full circle this a little bit once I kind of got in the mood of just like enjoying the noise of You know stadiums and things like that like to where nerves didn't really matter Nerves didn't really bother me from an outside perspective. I could make myself nervous, but I shut out the outside world The following content is a work of fiction. Any resemblance to actual persons, living or dead, is coincidental and unintentional. I was always kind of a gamer on, you know, I'm 40 now, so I had, I remember the first console I had was not even mine, it was my dad's and I would, it was a first Super, the first Nintendo NES. And I would wake up in the middle of the night to him playing Nintendo. The game was a game that was played in the middle of the night. I was like, I don't even know what this is yet. Did you have a younger dad? My parents were like, there's no way they would ever play that shit. Yeah, by the time that was happening, he was probably like 27, 28. Okay, that's young. So he was pretty young. But he was also a big fan of Williams arcade games. I grew up really loving Joust, Defender, but he would also play Galaga and Cynistar and just different weird games. But he was also a bar gamer too. He taught me shuffleboard and we played darts and ping pong. So there's always just little games to play when I was young. The But I never played pinball itself until I mean, I think my first even insight into that was like Sonic, you know spend on that sonic sonic level We've had that before people have talked about that is like the gateway. Yeah. Yeah, I'm sure people yeah I didn't know like the cabinet version of that as a kid. So, you know, I think I Can't even remember I to be honest with you the first time I actually saw a cabinet I can't either. Yeah. Yeah. I think the first time I really started playing pinball was at pinballs in Austin. I'm from Texas, but I lived in Austin in the baseball off seasons and I had this ritual with whoever wanted to be on board. We'd go, I'd go bowling around like noon or one o'clock and then I'd go straight to pinballs right after that and just hang out there all day. I don't know if it is anymore, but it's BYOB. Oh, nice. And that's just perfect. Yeah. Yeah. But yeah, I would play tons of, you know, my brother was there, we'd be, we'd spend, you know, 10 bucks playing the Ninja Turtles four player game. Yeah. And, or the Simpsons game. Yeah. But I would definitely kind of trail off and still to this day, I think my favorite cabinet and the last one that is there is Champions Pub. ChampionsPub just ripped. It was just one of the layout and when the guy turned around and you could fight him I was so captivated with the jump rope the speed bag like that just kind of lit me up a little bit into kind of the possibilities of what a pinball machine could be That game is stacked with like how much stuff is just in it. They did a great job of theme integration. I do want to talk a little bit maybe more later about We've also been trying to find out why we're not seeing more sports themes. Especially for me, it's just like when you have original themes, like a sports theme seems like the easiest way to get people on board, right? Even if you didn't have MLB or if you didn't have whatever professional boxing, you know, like Champions Pub is its own thing. You're fighting these weird guys who are even like bootleg versions of Punch Out basically. In our more racist. The Latin Guy, yeah, there's all the little guys. But like, that seems like such a way, like for me in general, is like using sports as themes like to make, to just get people on board. Cuz like, everyone knows the rules of football. Everyone knows the rules of baseball. Everyone knows the rules of basketball. It's like those things are like there for pinball, I feel like. And it's so, it's, shit is so advanced now. But how were you, at some point in your pitching career, did you realize you could throw that pitch, do it effectively, and then also manage to get your catchers and coaches on board for you doing that? Because it was literally unheard of at the time you were, you were doing it. Yeah, well I think it's almost, for me it was like an accidental pitch. wealthman, I was a kid in college and my changeup was just god awful and it just wasn't working out so I just was trying something else with my hand at the release and then all of a sudden it started spinning over the top like a curveball. But it did not move like a changeup and it did not move like a curveball, it was just something different and I was like, well let me keep going on pulling on the thread until we see what's up. It was super wild for like a year, but I mean I threw it and at that time it was a really really true screwball like I would throw it Almost near the right-handed batter and it would come back to the strike Zone Though it had it had a ton of movement on it But it was an it was an accident and you know, I just pronated really far over the ball meaning You know my hand went on the inside of the ball instead of like a curveball. So my hand moved opposite The Curveball moving outside my hand was inside The heart on your arm it hurt for a little while because my arm wasn't used to that much like pronation but got used to it thankfully and It took me a while to actually get the feel of it and definitely the location of it. It was super wild The But once I figured it out it changed the way I pitched and it changed it changed just the feeling of an at bat and yeah, having that one of one pitch is Obviously a great weapon to have if hitters are facing you for the first time and they've never seen it before I'm gonna get right Yeah, for sure Well, and it's really cool Because there are levels right to when you're like learning a pitch or learning something where it's like you learn it for the first time Now you can do it in practice now you can repeat it in practice but you're still not maybe necessarily gonna bring it to a game until you're like it's really been like ground in there and and That's that's interesting to me because Jane Veris who's a really great Pinball player you know is always kind of in women's finals in the world and nationals Razaerntane트itute attrep接下來', Question Boardäfta030145ta3cyclical, Journal crashing1057 largein!*钦 hoffe・≰ ascendンノ・⇰👊⇰Starø⇧—hyun⇶ security ZombFih950 penaltyestit derivativesread expense465 This track, ientechnology, because of this directionalPass BlickargailbenchMi perder writen That is such great advice to like to hear from her to you to me Because they're machines that I'm like, oof. I don't know man I just try to hit it when it the ball saves on Ryan Policky was off then I avoid it There's that too, and I think that's a common thing with baseball as well Right is like strategy is a it's like yes, you have hand-eye coordination You have those skills But also just as much in Daniel you can talk about this is like will you say when you're watching baseball now? Coordinated with N Shops out게an analyst II,irty Smallpoo Th travelling24 TRNN1, I need an excuse because Greg Maddux is a known psycho. He's a psycho. Like some of the shit I've heard about the pranks and stuff he would pull like shitting, basically shitting on dudes. It's fucked up. He did some weird shit, but he would execute Nat Bat. And I mean, from, from stories of his teammates being like, I'm going to do this, I'm going to throw this pitch. He's going to foul it off the dugout, and then I'm going to get him out with this pitch. And it just happened. So I mean I don't think it's bullshit it's like that is like a master execution so like if I I wish in my little heart that Greg Maddux is a pinball guy because I feel like he could execute some rams. 100% dog because I think about like Jurassic Park I was just talking to my friend because I'm like trying to get my Jurassic Park game up where like I can consistently be scoring like you know six hundred seven hundred into a billion and I've been talking to my friend who does this all the time and he's How we play spotlight bihões comme tous ces The Then going to the control room then you start your next dinosaur then you start your multiball It's like it's not just part of pinball is going with the flow But part of it is making the flow go towards where you want it to so like that that is really interesting to me And yeah I definitely like it's Greg Maddux is a guy who is Enacting that on a crazy level against people who are trying to stop him the nice part about pinball is you're really only playing yourself The game is a game of pinball, right? Like if it's a game you know pretty well, you've got a plan. Okay, I want to make this shot first, I wanna, you know, like Dungeons and Dragons is the newest game, it's like you you wanna hit that dragon, you wanna you wanna get that multiball ready, right? You know, it's like things like that, you wanna do that. But of course, like in baseball, you got the same thing, it's like I wanna throw this pitch for a strike and I wanna get ahead of the hitter and then sometimes it doesn't work out right and sometimes you're down three you three oh in the count other times you're it's oh and two in the count and you're like all right i can i can fuck around a little bit here and that's a really really interesting analogy between between things and like it doesn't always work out in fact it almost never works out because with pinball you're never going to make every shot unless you're i don't know lyman sheets or or or keith ellen or Zach Sharpe or whoever right so no i i think there's I think there's a lot to that because as a pitcher, you guys noted I was the shortest pitcher since the 60s. I did not throw hard. I'm not a big person with a lot of power so I needed to do other things. Once I got drafted, I got drafted by the Rangers and got into their organization. I was voted from the organization best control. I could put six different pitches on both sides of the plate, no problem. So that was my whole shtick was like I make things move and I put them where you can't hit them. And so there was just part of my mantra, my ability to slow the game down a little bit, execute what I want it, make a plan and execute it. And if I put that into pinball now, I'm, I mean, I'm still newer to pinball that I'm like super reactionary and I want the thing and I want it now. A turban who twisted a bow upon one's breast against pobre hot vampirekeiten, missing one's mind ofkol superior tex inflammatory embarrassed for mere The And to get myself in more of the mode that I know that I can I can play But at the same time You know, I got some free to be both. It has to be both. Yeah, it is such a push and pull, right? It's emotion. It's heart and brain together like Sometimes oppositionally sometimes working together when you're playing. Well, you're working together when when they're in opposition The That to me is like I haven't played professional sports But even when I play sports that to me is like when I'm rolling like when I can hit my jumper, right? Like that's head and mind are like in there. It's like my brain is basically shut off like it's like not even there It's just like it's like I always call it point and click right like when I'm really locked in I can see it I just click on it like that's as easy as it is. So The It's about sort of like thinking high level in a one way But then in the actual moment is like what I love about pinball what I love about sports is like there is no time to think And that's the best part about it my anxiety goes away. I don't think about the shit. I got to do later on today I don't got to think about you know, whatever It's just like it's sort of reactionary So yeah Yeah, there's something that an art professor told me is that like practice goes into meditation, turns into meditation. So it's just like when you're in a machine and you can feel that flow, feel that point and click. Now you're just, there's nothing else but, you know, that one shot and then the next shot. And so that meditation state is really nice to feel. For sure. That's a great segue into art and everything that you're doing. So there it is our conversation with Daniel Herrera formerly of what else what he played for the Brewers yep he played for the Mets yep he played for the Reds yep pretty cool I think that was it and got drafted by the Rangers I remember that because he's a good Texas boy boy yep yeah and seems like he's really been bitten by the pinball bug especially competitive pinball bug right yeah The tournament sees you in a jack bar and everything. Yeah, I mean I think it was really fun to hear from a professional athlete about how focus and channeling your emotions and those kind of things really translate to pinball and It's something that I've always kind of suspected or talked about but um It's cool to hear someone who like really did that stuff for a living. I'm like the highest level Talk about that. So that was really cool for me Yeah, I want to talk to someone like Tom Graf I'm gonna play the intro a little bit, like how nervous does that guy get? You know when he's when he's in a pinball tournament cuz he's done so many and he's like such a good player like I do wonder you know if once you get to a certain level of whatever you're doing where the where the nerves like land you know yeah or if it's just because you know oh we haven't you know he's new to competitive pinball so he's more nervous than he was on the mound I don't know I don't know well it's interesting right because I don't know if you felt this way about performance like playing show Shane but like I always get nervous The I by the time I'm like hitting the stage that turns into energy to like fuel the Performance and I feel like a percent Yeah And I feel like that's probably what those guys are like right they found the best way to channel all that sort of nervous energy That you get beforehand into it and luckily for me I was not the brunt of anything bad for Tom griff because he's such a master of it because I The If those roles would have been reversed and it was Tom Graff walking up to me I would have been yeah, it's such a imagine. I'm such a dick like imagine that You know Especially walking dead. Oh boy Exactly Walking dead with like I and I'm gonna get eliminated if I don't play good and I'm I got my headphones on I'm walking around like If you say anything to me, I'm just gonna like start barking in your face.
