## Transcript

what's up everybody in this episode I'm going to share with you an interview I got at pinball Expo with the director of token taverns token taverns is an arcade bar documentary and from when I took this interview I had not yet seen the film but since then I have watched the film and I absolutely loved it and I hope that you will too if you have not yet seen it and that this video brings you to watch it but before I cut to the clip I did want to give a huge shout out to my first sponsor the pinball scientist now the pinball scientist has a website where you can buy pinball mods kits and restoration items mainly for EMS which we learned in our last interview means electromechanical and if you haven't seen the last interview um you know where to find it you sure about that I want to thank them so much for sponsoring this episode because it's given me a chance to give you guys a special discount code so if you wait to the end of the episode I'll go ahead and give that to you or you can check the show notes you know I get it uh without further Ado let's uh cut to the clip hey everybody I'm here at pinball Expo and with a special guest and what it go ahead and introduce yourself to the people yeah so my name is Bob Rose I'm director of token taverns and we are here at pinball Expo to talk about our movie which is a arcade bar documentary sweet so how did this come about where did when did the idea start well I mean okay so I started noticing arcade bars popping up all over the place and you know I'm a big crap deer lover I used to go and go to craft beer bars and I started going to Arcade bars instead and so once I saw that and saw the growth I felt like it was a a good opportunity to show the general public about these places so that was kind of where it all came from sweet so your background what what are you normally do outside of filming documentaries you're a filmmaker as well yeah so I work professionally in the film and video business I have for quite some time uh I've done quite a few uh docu series uh but this movie is is kind kind of my passion project myself my wife worked on this it's our third film together uh and it's but it's the first film that we are actually part of the community that we are representing or we're filming so what is it that you cover inside this tokens Tavern stock what is it that you want to share with people sure okay so it primarily it kind of covers uh the arcade bar industry but it does it through personal stories of three arcade bars and you get to see their ups and downs and kind of them trying to run the business and um and so you're seeing it through the veil of their eyes but I mean we're getting into Pinball's huge in this in this documentary there's multiple um uh tournaments you get to see games come out from like oh how excited people get when a game comes out they unbox it and stuff at a bar uh but you also are getting into kind of the bar scene and so I call it like an arcade cheers where everybody knows your game so so you're you're getting to know these characters that own the bar that run the bar that fix the machines but you're also meeting the people that are there playing pinball they're hanging out at the bar and heing these fun conversations there aren't about sports but are about pinball or the latest game or just kind of like these very uh retro conversations around the bar sick sweet so how long did it take you to roughly film this okay so we filmed in and out for a little bit o uh over two years uh we started filming the movie we got about a third way through then Co happened Co kind of became a part of the movie a bit uh it also turned it into a little bit of a survival story so we kind of rode that out and followed these guys stories these These Bars and and seeing how they kind of uh Tred to get through this and then and then out the other side to where we are now where everybody's just great to be back at Expos back playing games together and and to see that that we all know that story that Co story but to it through the veil of a small business and for it to be an arcade bar it was just pretty awesome uh and and yeah so that's kind of where where it kind of fell and and I edited the whole way through all the way till delivery I was kind of uh editing this thing so quite a few hours right yeah I know the feeling editing does does take time well awesome it looks like you can get your film you can see it on Amazon and yeah so we are on Amazon Prime that's our Main Place uh we're also on uh Google uh play and YouTube movies so that this is a digital transactional so for rent or for buy and exclusive to and we also have limited edition vhs's that I made myself um these are pretty awesome and then exclusive to the Expo we have our Blu-ray out which is pretty cool because it has uh uh a director's commentary that I did with retro Ralph and uh and a behind the scenes feature at uh that features like these these screenings we've been doing so we did a summer tour where we screen in five or six different cities and and some gaming shows and was super successful and then that led us to where we're at now which is our fall tour and this is our second screening and we have uh two or three more left uh going into the winter so it's been awesome it's like we're on the platforms people are streaming it at home but people are also watching it still in a communal experience uh and that's what's really exciting and that's what we're doing here as well as we're going to screen tomorrow night at at the Expo yeah I know I've he lots of really great feedback it's cool to see you guys on social media as well I know you can find them on social media have uh Instagram and I'm sure some other sites everything Instagram Facebook uh our Tik Tok is getting pretty good so check us out there we're starting to do some uh some gameplay lives and we call it like a um a chilling chat but you know we're an arcade bar so we usually have a little beer involved and and play Pinball and kind of shoot the a little bit and stuff so um yeah that's kind of where we're at sweet so you play any pinball leagues near you then uh I'm not as much a pinball League player uh my wife and I are I would say a little bit more casual uh we do enjoy playing and we play a lot uh I would say I'm a good mediocre player um but yeah we we look into it I'm just uh currently I'm just more about the Hang than the compe competitiveness of it I do like that but I just haven't done that many tournaments yet sure awesome but I do appreciate it it's pretty impressive and I have a lot of friends I'm at them a lot but I'm usually just kind of playing off to the side a little bit yeah right no yeah I'm kind of getting a little out of the tournament scene more into just hanging out and right playing games and having a good time and that's kind of what the movie is like too like there are um uh tournaments in the movie but it's it's like at an arcade bar it's friends they're throwing the $10 buyin it's not like winner takes off like steak steaky you know national state championships and stuff like that it is more about the Comm Community experience I think is the major thing about the movie yeah like token taverns how did you come up with the title oh man well I mean I'm a firm believer in alliteration so my first movie is called functional fitness um so I love alliteration but yeah I mean to be honest with you I I literally took two sheets of paper and I knew I had to have like some sort of gaming uh uh name and a beer name and I just ran the gamut until something clicked and and once it happened I was like okay that's perfect and then I did my searching to make sure there wasn't a bunch of arcade bars called tuen taverns but yeah that's kind of that it's super cool no it's super awesome that you've created this and given more to the community in this way and uh is there anything that else parting words you want to say for the viewers out there to know about your film or yeah well I mean I I appreciate everybody's supporting I mean we built this movie and made it for the community so that's why we're at these places and so uh I we we are focused into to the arcade pinball community and we want to make sure everybody knows so as much as everybody can share and just spread the word that uh toen out we are an independent film so uh I mean Grassroots marketing is where it's at so that's where what we're doing awesome well thank you so much I really appreciate your time here to let me interview you and yeah wish and luck for the film and I can't wait to watch it absolutely let's play some pinball later yeah let's get some pinball and we'll see you later thanks so much for watching this episode guys I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did and if you have not yet seen the movie I highly recommend it it's such a wonderful piece it's great for pinball and arcade enthusiasts alike so if you have any questions or suggestions or maybe you've watched the film to feel free to leave some comments down below I'd love to hear your thoughts and like I said before our sponsor has given us a special discount code of 10% off on his website so if you want to go ahead and get this code here and use it when you check out from your cart and yeah I'll catch you guys on the flip side oh that sounds weird and before I cut to the director's clip o is it like behind the scenes directors before I cut to the interview I did want to give a huge shout out to my um okay this is it I feel it enjoyed it as much as I did if you haven't had just a chance I think that's good
