## Transcript

Now who's responsi- I say who's responsible for this unwarranted attack on my person? I say, I say, I say, pay attention now, boy. This is, of course, Foghorn Leghorn presents the Pinball Junk Drawer. You all asked for it. I say, I say, you all asked for it now. You're gonna get it. Boy, oh boy, are you gonna get it. Go, I say, go away, boy, you bother me. And just like that, in the blink of an eye, we're back. this is of course the pinball junk drawer big show 54 the only pinball podcast that takes one part nonsense and one part logic and steeps it down into a delicious uh gentle green tea of comedy gold no okay sure we'll go with that yes my name is uh foghorn leghorn and what am i on this show oh yeah my name is foghorn like i'm with me as always craft brew sally who only has one alias as opposed to the many aliases that I have. I think I have two. I did have another one. Yeah, I think three total if you include the TV show from years, years ago. So, yeah, first and foremost, we have to start off this show by giving a shout-out to the one and only Dan the Man, our very first confirmed pinball junk drawer purchaser. Thank you, Dan the Man. Isn't that awesome? It is. He put up a picture. If you don't know, we recently put our stuff up with Silver Ball Swag. So go to silverballswag.com and search the pinball junk drawer. And I think he got almost the full compliment. He got the stickers. He got the shirt. T-shirt. And he got a pint glass. Now, I remember, I think he said his significant other always listens because she knows your voice. So I wonder if he got her. He's probably waiting for the Crafter Sally branded merch. Oh, man. Well, who will never know what the future holds. Thank you very much, Dan the Man. It is greatly appreciated. I know I have a feeling that we're going to be getting some together so we can represent a little bit at the expo. I also have an inkling that whoever gets us in the secret Santa pin sign might be getting a full compliment. You shouldn't tell everybody now. I can't help myself. What can I tell you? So, yeah, we have a little bit of pinball stuff here and there. you finally got a chance to watch some of the Carrie Hardy Haggis series I did, I watched both episodes both episodes, yeah, I have a feeling there's going to be a couple more now I didn't know we talked about this a lot I don't think we're going to talk about it too much but the Haggis is an ongoing saga and the Carrie Hardy if you haven't watched those yet or listened to them check those out, they seem to be very well done well produced for sure and they seem to be also have a lot of actual information not just random these are people that are coming up and talking about what they've put in and what they've seen so he's putting a lot of actual journalistic work into this which is good for him I think the first episode it was like customer people that actually got some of the stuff from Haggis Because they did produce machines. They were a working facility that was making pinball stuff. They were a working shyster facility. It was a shyster factory. Wow. One part widget, one part shyster, one part pinball. I think two parts shyster. Now, so you learned a lot. Yeah. We here have always taken the kind of the approach of we don't know all the facts. So although it stinks and it seems shady as hell, I don't know for sure anything. You know. Right. There was some very, when you listen to Carrie Hardy talk, there was some very weird, shady things going on. Very questionable. Yeah. Things. Like where he's paying himself under a different like shadow company. The thing that got me was the part that I was listening to said that he had this other company called Hartco. Hartco, I think. Not to be confused with Shartco. That's something totally different. But they owned or they, I think they leased the equipment from a different company. Right. But then charged Haggis. so haggis was paying heart co right which who was paying this other company to use the equipment so it was a laundering deal like where he was literally taking the cut like this company was leasing you the company the the stuff for 100 grand and he was charging 200 grand so he's clearing 100 grand right it was and it's that kind of stuff you know i gotta tell you i'm not the smartest guy. I feel like I'm pretty competent in some things and I can read people fairly well. But like rich people nonsense, that's rich people nonsense. Right. Like that's the end. Anytime you hear like all this wacky stuff and you're like, well, that doesn't work. No, it always works. That's why very, very rich people are always very rich. Yeah. And everyone that isn't really isn't because I wouldn't even conceive of that, you know? No. And it's like you're like, well, how do they even do that i was like well we just watched a half of a year of someone who claimed that they were a billionaire bilk people that like him into giving him money for legal representation on felonies he did so you know that's rich people nonsense that's we don't know that we don't we can't even conceive of it you know so i'm just happy when people buy a t-shirt so that's that's the level i am compared to a level where somebody's bilking a company he started off of another company where he's leasing. Right. It's so nuts. Yeah, no. Right. There's just not that much, I could be totally wrong, but I don't think there's that much money in pinball unless you're established and rolling and getting doing this stuff. And now you had asked a question to me. I did. There were a couple questions I think I have. So near the end of the second episode, they talk about how instead of buying generic like piece like parts right he was making all of the parts for these machines now that's okay yeah that's something i've heard other places do as well keeping everything in house right equals you're gonna fail right because you need that bin of nonsense parts that goes into every single machine you need that to be one like a half of a penny a piece from china or wherever china gets that from Because I heard now that China is literally outsourcing So they basically middlemanning cheaper crap So you're getting, and it doesn't matter because it's not like some quality. It's a screw or it's a nut or it's a washer. It don't matter where it comes from. You know what I mean? Like that has no bearing. But I heard a lot of people like, I'm going to do this in-house. Well, don't. Because that's costing you. Now you can say, well, it's only 12 bucks a box. and that's $1,000 in a box. Well, times that by this, times that per year. Right. You've just given away $20,000. And you don't have $20,000. No. Like, pinball machines ain't clearing that much money. No, not at all. It's volume. Especially if you're making all the parts and, you know. So I don't know if this guy had good intention or not. I don't know that. You know what I mean? And that's the one. It's easy to kind of like look at the shenanigans and go, well, of course he didn't have good intentions. Maybe he did. I don't know. maybe he's done this 20 other times with with in 20 other industries and it's worked every time where he has an ice cream shop and he leases an ice cream machine then upsells it to that ice cream shop that he owns and he makes 50 grand a year on that and maybe you know like maybe he does that all the time i don't know i mean i'm saying i don't know i don't know this gentleman but yeah you know so but it sounded like he this other company made some sort of item right but he would never put his own money in it so he's like i'm not gonna put my own money in i'm gonna make everybody pre-order stuff right so it sounds like he tried it with that and that may have worked while he was formulating his plan to do that with pinball machines that's possible right that's what i mean like but i don't think it was as successful like the first company like the heart co i don't think it was as successful as he thought it was going to be. It turned into a shark cove. It did. Oh, that's sad. And it stinks bad, too. But then my other question was about the playfields. Because people were saying that there were bubbles on the play field. So my question to you was, is this like a plastic cover that just goes over the already finished play field? Your very simple and intelligent question posed is going to take us down a dark and stupid path. Each turn smellier and stupider than the last. See, what happened was back in 1803 when pinball was invented, some guy was like, you know what, I can make this thing with this thing called diamond plate. And they're like, well, what does that do? He's like, well, it basically murders the environment, but it makes it that pinball never dents anything and it lasts forever. And they're like, sign us up. so they made 20 machines with those on it these are all rough math and to this day people look at that and go look at that diamond plated thing isn't it glorious and you can whip thor's hammer out and it just bounces off and hits the hulk in the head and it's perfect but the problem is everywhere that they make pinball machines they're like yeah you see how that like 28 000 seagulls just fell out of the sky when you made that one diamond plate thing we're gonna have to say don't do that anymore because it's made of some chemical that murders babies. I don't know. So then they were like, okay, well, whatever. We're just going to just use a regular clear coating. And then pinball became a collector's hobby. And then people were like, I don't know, this steel ball continually smashing against this wood is putting dimples in. I don't like dimples in my machine. So then this fellow went, I'm bringing back diamond plate, but I'm going to call it haggis skin and now shazam we don't care about it and it's going to be the best play field in the history of the world and everyone went yay for haggis here's my money and then they sat in these heated containers or the containers going across the sea and the heat made them delaminate and they fell apart some of them so the moral well well moral of the story is everyone's a shyster and those if you have those 20 things that went out with diamond plate well you can retire because you're a billionaire they're worth every gold gold the gold standard is based off of diamond plated pinball via playfields there's about three percent of uh fact in that whole story but really the main parts were there was this stuff called diamond plates most things just use clear coat and then they put this stuff called mylar on it if you look at our dr dude the main body has mylar on it which is like a which is a plastic cover over top of the deep over top of like the decal. But it's like. It's like an extra layer. But it's like put on with adhesive. Yeah. And you can see where it is. There's videos about how to take that off if you hate it. Because some people hate it. Yeah. And then like, you know, and there is, you can take like playfields to like specialists that will use that like super clear coat. And I don't know. And they'll kill all the wildlife around their building. If you look up in the sky and you see clouds forming and all the people dying around it, then you're like, well, that guy will... If you take him your play field, he'll fix it for you. It'll be harder than Thor's hammer. There was some other actual story about how they made those, because there was this thing where he hit his play field with a hammer and it didn't dent. So people were like... I mean, like I said, that was mostly a story for humor, but there was some fact in it. And that was a big selling point to his first games, They're like, wow, you know, his playfields are really tough. And that was a hot-button item for the collector world of pinball because they don't like seeing those dimples that every machine in the world has. It's a steel ball doing violent things under a piece of glass. So that's kind of where he hung his hat on. And that was kind of what, I don't want to say what brought him into it because I think just the having a home-based Australian pinball machine in a country that has a very vibrant pinball community was a big draw. They should have. They should have a couple because they are a very, you know, pinball is very, I don't want to say very popular, but it's popular over there. You know, we've seen even the stuff where Stern goes over there and was doing some of that tour over there with, like, the Stern Army images. Remember when he was there? So it's a great thing. So they should have some. You know, it's just the reality is right now Chicago is the heartbeat of where all the parts are, where the designers are, where everything is easy. And the parts don't travel well to Australia. No, they do. There's a lot of taxes and fees, and they sit on a boat for a long time. But also, heat. Well, that didn't affect the stern ones. Well, there you go. It just affected theirs. So, yeah, moving on. Again, if you referred back to a show or two ago, I was like, stern has learned a lot of lessons over the years, and that's what keeps them safe. those lessons those hard learned lessons you know where they probably had to lay off some people because they did a whoopsie And they don do that no more you know So it was tough But I do encourage everyone, if you have any interest at all, check out Kerry Hardy's videos, as they seem to be pretty steeped in not-nonsense, like my story was, and actual facts and stuff like that. And it's an interesting ongoing saga, you know. Yeah, I guess at the end of the second episode, he says that he's going to talk to somebody from... Yeah, an ex-employee. Which, of course, they are also... He has learned a lot. He's using a good flair for the dramatic as far as like... It's being edited like a crime show. Well, it is a crime. Yes, it is. I'm trying to think. Oh, then the only other thing was like... Stern has a Jurassic Park home edition that they're releasing to Costco. And some people were kind of... Jurassic Park. I thought it was a Jurassic Park home edition. And some people were kind of going nuts on it. And I said, well, there's always been home editions. Who cares? I mean, if you're not a distributor, who cares? I mean, even if you're a distributor, maybe... I don't know how you feel about that. You might think, oh, that's like competition a little bit. But is it? It could be, but it could also get you more business because once people have those in their house, then they're going to be like, oh, I need another one of these. Yeah, because they were smart enough to leave. This version has that insider connector. Oh, yeah. So you're going to get more insider. Those people are going to be like, oh, I need more poopy doops. Poopy doops. We live by the poopy doops. Right. Yeah. Oh, speaking of that, remember we wanted to talk about that place we were at. Remember we. Oh, yes. We had the in-laws over from Pencil Tucky, and so they stayed for a couple weeks, and we were roped into playing miniature golf. And by that, I mean, me and the father-in-law didn't want to play, but well, guess what? We went to play miniature golf. What was it called? It was called Glow in the Park. Glow in the Park. And it's in Oshkosh. Yes, it was a really neat place. It was. And then they had what? So that was Rachel and Joshua, because on the way out, I was asking if I could buy the Austin Powers machine from them, and they said no. And I said, well, I'm going to slip you my name and address, and if you ever want to see it, you give us a call, because I am kind of now on a tear for buying Austin Powers. I'm dumb. Like, we had one, and then. It was our first in box. Right. And then we saw one at Expo, and it was so beat up. That thing was rough. And we were so sad. Yeah. Well, this one was beautiful. Yes. And then we were both like, oh, we need this in our lives again. It's fun. It brings back a lot of memories. It does. That's what it is. As soon as you hear it, I just get flashback to me. The first time, not knowing nothing about nothing, pinball was not a cool thing back then. Right. This was in 2003? No, 2004? I don't remember. I don't remember either, but I didn't even know people could buy them. And then I found out you could buy them, and I was like, oh, this is so cool. And there was no pinball machines in people's houses. No. Not that we knew, anyway. Right. can you believe it's like just in that short of a distant memory that's how far the pinball community is right we're now because then we started meeting people and then you're like oh wow there's a lot of people that have them it was not like it is now not even close right you know so um yeah so they were cool right so and then we found out that they get their stuff from uh flipping out yeah which they had many great things to say about zach and that's so did the the people on that, what you call, on that Haggis Pinball. Oh, yeah, yeah. They talked about Zach a lot. Well, that's a good thing. Right. You know, it's kind of nice to see a positive return. If somebody is doing some good stuff, it's good to hear every now and then somebody saying good things. Right. Boy, you sure hear a ton of bad things every time. You always hear the bad stuff. Why? I don't know. I don't either. So, if you're ever in Oshkosh, we are going to say, we're not getting paid to say this, check out glow in the park i know we're gonna go see that again yes you're gonna make me play golf although i'm not gonna want to and i'm gonna say well i will on the condition that i can go spend like 20 bucks in their uh in their game and they have a massive not massive they have a good chunk of pinball machines yes and i reaffirmed i fell in love i've never fallen out of love with elvira and i sure hope i can get one i sure hope i can get an elvira one day so austin powers and elvira Elvira. And we have to get an Elton John for my mom for next time they come. I don't think that's going to happen. I did hang a grand champion on that bond down there. Oh, yes, you did. What the heck was it like? Oh, I can't remember. $497 million or was it? It was really high. I was like, wow. I thought I was doing good. And then I know my father-in-law kept on going over to see where we were. Yeah. He likes the scoreboards. The Stern scoreboards, yeah. He was on that. So it was kind of fun. I was on three boards but like number four and number six and some of that and then Deadpool and Elvira and then I hammered on that on that bomb machine down there so that was a lot of fun I don't think really anything else I know there's still a lot of content cranking out I see Don's been hitting it pretty hard with the videos and some of that cool stuff I think he's part of a new venture We Are Pinball. I haven't seen any of those yet, but I've seen some of the posts. I have to get on that, check some of that stuff out. You got anything else before we drop in? Visit projectpinball.org. Projectpinball.org. Everyone knows who they are. I know. We all know who they are. But projectpinball.org, you'll be glad you did. I did have one more thing before we go to your beer thing. Oh, yeah? I got a package. Uh-oh. It's not really pinball related, but I know the subject's been breached before, so hold on a second, everyone. So about a week or so ago, I ordered something from Losermachine.com, and Crapper said, what was that? And I was like, you know what? I'll save it for an on-air opening. Oh, no. And this doesn't have anything to do with pinball, but I know, like I said, I know you've made fun of me for this before. Uh-oh. Is this a skateboard deck? I don't know. let's look what came from losermachine.com it is a skateboard deck it's a moon equipped loser machine moon equipment speed and skate it's a big orange foot skateboard deck because I had to you got anything to say about that crap Rusell? hang on everyone she's choking back the laughter oh my goodness this is a i should put this like 12 of these now and you have i never seen you on the skate i do not skate but i like the i like the artwork Moon equipment is like hot rod stuff Is there anything on the top? No, just wood. I actually found some skateboard-like wall holders that are made to hang up the decks. So I think for Christmas I'm going to ask Santa for about an eight-pack of those. You should probably get a 12-pack. Yeah. This will go down the moon equipped. I should take a picture of it for our Facebook page. We're going to do a lot on there. We should. All right. Now that I've been made fun of for my purchase, we'll go to everyone's. I'm not making fun. It's your money. You spend it on whatever you want. All of this money are easily parted. But I'm going to laugh with you. You should laugh with me. All right. Hang tight, everyone. Bye-bye. Bye-bye. Bye-bye. Bye-bye. Bye-bye. We'll have a barrel of fun. The fans have spoken and we have listened. It's Beer Journal Review with me, Craft Brew Sally. Bring out a song of pleasure. Now time to roll the barrel. All right, so we're back again. Just got done with the half pipe. We're done skateboarding. You know, kind of wash down that thirst, cure our thirst with something. What do you got for us, GrabRu? I would like to talk about heavily sought-after beers. I've been looking, about, what, a year, two years ago, I had been looking for a Unicorn Farts by DeClaw. Okay. I remember this. You remember. It was like, I was probably looking for it for three or four years. And I was always looking, and I'm like, I can't find this stuff. I don't know what that is. Right. So it's a Glitter Sour Ale by Duclos. And so after three-ish years of looking for it, I found it. Wonderful. And I was very disappointed. Was it all you'd ever hoped for? No, it was not at all. so one of the other beers that i'm looking for if anybody out there has any access to it is pliny the elder pline like pliny how do you spell that p-l-i-n-y the elder the elder what and it's made by the russian river brewing company i don't and it's it's a double ipa and everyone craps their rompers about it. Doing a callback to our crap their rompers statement. Sure, why not? Yeah, why not? Let's bring that back. So, I just, I'm worried that I'm going to get it and then it's not going to be everything I've hoped it is. Part of it's the journey. Right. It's like, whenever I am trying to track something down and you know, I've had some wacky stuff I've tracked down in the past. It's a, it's kind of like the journey. Getting it is half the hunt. Right. It's half the excitement. of it. Yes. And then you get tired of it. Right. I know. It was like when I was looking for that unicorn farts, it was like, I have the untapped app and you could get notifications if it was close to you. So I got a notification it was close and I went there. You're like, I quit my job and ran right back. Right. No. No. Oh, we never had that. It says right here you had it. It lies. It did so then i don't even remember where we finally got it from so well i mean maybe as we're getting closer to expo you should start talking with some people that we know that we're friends with on right you know through our community through our poor man's pinball community yeah and see if anyone has stuff they're looking for from our area we can take it and you could start a beard like trading thing and then you can come home sally's beer trading beer trader yeah we could do it at the poor man's booth. Or we could do it out of their trunk like regular hobos. I don't think I want to do it out of the trunk. Wow, you don't know what fun is. Right. So you're standing in some dark parking lot as somebody ambles over towards you to see about trading beer. So what kind of things have you been sodding after? Oh, the list is endless. Guitars. Oh, yes. and uh five six seven eight and like everything just everything so many so many things you know and like a lot of video games that are out there that i'm trying to track down trying to think of some of the hardest ones there's some i've even given up on like just there's just stuff that's like kind of unobtainium you know you're like well oh yeah i'd love to have the icps like uh joker cards in vinyl oh yeah well no i don't not for a hundred dollars not for like 190 or 300 each, I'm like, I'm not spending $1,000. And that's what it comes down to. You're chasing after stuff and then you go, well, this isn't worth an ounce of gold. And that's what it... Stuff is so expensive now. Right. I was thinking about trying to make a top five list of beers that I would really like to try that I've heard other people talk about. Could you ever do it? I don't know. Maybe. I'm going to try to see which ones I want to try and see if I can find them. Driving distance. Right. Yeah. Right. I'll never know what happens. And Pliny the Elder is out of California. And guess what we never looked for when we were in California? That one. Yeah. Well, you never know. I know, I think, I don't know. I don't know where some of the people are. The poor man's network is pretty scattered. Right. So maybe some people will be coming in. You never know. We'll see. And I think there are some distributors throughout the United States that distribute it. Russian? Russian? Like the company? Russian River Brewing Company. Huh. No, no, no. Yeah. You never know. Okay. If anybody has access to Pliny the Elder. Hit up Craft Brew Sally on our very, very vague. No, we actually have an email. What's our email address? pinballjd at gmail.com pinballjd at gmail.com and in fact it's always in the show notes if you're ever checking this out you just click on it yeah make it easier although I don't have access to it you have it I should put that on my phone but I don't you should oh well I'm very lazy alright got anything else for today I don't think so I don't think so either have fun be kind to each other and enjoy pinball see you next week everyone that's it man game over man Game over!
