What's that sound? It's 4 Amusement Only, the EM and Bingo Pinball Podcast. Welcome back to 4 Amusement Only, this is Nicholas Baldridge. Tonight I wanted to talk about 1965's Beauty Beach. Beauty Beach is a 20-hole bingo pinball machine. bingo pinball machines are multi-coin pinball machines you put in your first coin ball loads to the shooter lane the machine resets and it gives you your default game at that point you can play using any of three buttons on the front of the machine to try and advance your odds your features or both you advance your odds with the blue button your features with the green button and both with the red button. Beauty Beach, being a 20-hole bingo pinball machine, uses the feature unique to that layout, which is mystic lines. Mystic lines are a moving numbers feature that will swap the leftmost two columns, the rightmost two columns, and we'll move the centermost column up and down. The bingo card for a 20-hole pinball machine is not square. It's only made up of the 20 holes which are on the playfield, and therefore it is 5 by 4. Because of this, the scoring is broken up into sections. You have a red, a yellow, a green, and a blue section. Each of these sections contains five numbers. However one of the numbers is always a star This is called the star zone for that color And the issue with the star zones is that they always act as the fifth number in that particular section If you happen to get the star zone when you have two other numbers lit in that section, star zone counts for nothing and you get no winner. You have to have the other four numbers in that section lit and then get your star zone, and then you'll win your five in a section odds. So let's talk about the odds. This game has quadruple deck scoring. That means there are four different colors which will advance. And as they advance, it's going to show you your odds for getting three in a section, four in a section, and five in a section. It goes anywhere from 4 replays for 3 in a section, 16 for 4 in a section, and 75 for 5 in a section, all the way up to 192 for 3 in a section, 480 for 4, and 600 for 5 in a section. Beauty Beach carries forward the doubled score feature from Border Beauty and they added a triple score. Now only one color will light at a time and it's random whether it will light double or triple or neither. this game also has an extra ball feature you can pay after your normal 5 ball game to try and extend it but it typically takes multiple coins in order to lift your first extra ball and then another multiple set of coins to lift your second and so on The star zones which I mentioned which are basically worthless unless they are the fifth number, can be used in two other features. In one, if you have numbers in all four of the star zones lit, then you'll earn either 300 or 600 replays. In the other, they're used in order to qualify your red letter game. Based on the position of the red odds, one of the letters in beauty will be lit up red. And this letter will give you a guaranteed set of odds and features as labeled on the score and instruction card down at the apron. Now, if the red letter feature is lit, you only have to get 3 out of 4 of the star zones, or 2 out of 4 of the star zones, depending on which the machine chooses for you. Let's talk about artwork. This game has a beach theme. In this case, it's a very 60s beach theme. All the women on the back glass have very typical hairdos for the period. You've got a man and a woman out in the water in the near distance. And farther out, you've got palm trees and a very large other tree in the background. Looks like an evergreen of some type. The odds are in the sand and there a lot of action going on in the image The seagulls from previous beach themes have been brought back to reprise their role They flying around the bingo card up in the sky The cabinet also screams 1960s to me. The stencil for this is blue as the base coat with yellow arrows pointing in alternating directions with a cutout in blue for the tip of a red arrow, the tail of which is behind the yellow arrow. And then there is an odd geometric shape in red, Again, with a cutout in blue and a geometric shape in yellow, a rhombus, with a red square in one corner. The playfield has eight women hanging out, having fun in the water, and a few men coming to investigate the beauties from Beauty Beach.
