TL;DR

Barrels Reserve membership program explained with production updates on Winchester/Dune and upcoming title speculation.

Summary

Don discusses Barrels of Fun's new Barrels Reserve membership program ($75/year) that provides FOMO insurance by allowing members a 7-day grace period to purchase games that sell out within a week of release. He also shares production updates on Barrels games (Winchester delayed to October, Dune completion in 1-3 months) and speculates about upcoming titles, while addressing rumors of a ZZ Top machine. Additional discussion covers Spooky's Beetlejuice production progress and design philosophy around screen integration.

Jaws, Jaws, Crippinball. Quest, ZZ Top from the top of the hour, Texas Zone, let's take us out. Oh, did you guys hear the rumor about the ZZ Top pinball machine coming from Barrels of Fun? I'm here to dispel that slightly after my conversation with them, but you never know with those tricksters over there at Barrels of Fun. So, in the middle of the day, I'm just hanging out over at the Spooky Factory. My wife had lunch, I came by, I was hanging out, we were talking quick trip, talking bear hunting, talking titles, licensing, bull crap. And then, like, this comes across, like, did you see this, did you see whatever? I got a text from David Van Ness, he's like, what do you think now of this? And I'm like, what are you talking about, dude? Because we were talking about tariffs earlier. And then I found out Barrels went ahead, took my idea, my suggestion of having some kind of inside track to be able to get a game a little bit early in a more civilized fashion. And they went and blew it up and created something even bigger than what I was recommending. So Barrels Reserve is a spooky fang club for Barrels of Fun that gives you some perks. Essentially it boils down to game insurance, right? Oh, everybody's got some opinions on this. And so before I get into that, let me just tell you about what the breakdown of what this thing actually is. This is a yearly, renewably billable fan club product. Okay, you subscribe to this. I'm sure you can cancel payment after you pay once, but it'll auto-renew every year. So to one year, $75, here's what you get. If a Barrels of Fun game releases, let's use Winchester Mystery House as an example. Well, 525. It comes out. It's released. Two days later, it is sold out. Okay. Some people were out of town. You know, this had me shook. You know, I managed to get one. But like, what if I'm on a flight or something and like their next game comes out? It's just 500 and the fever's hitting hard and like I miss out or something. So if you're a member already prior to the release of this game, you're going to have a window. So this kicks in, this insurance policy kicks in if the Barrels of Fun game releases and it sells out within seven days. Okay, you know, before that, I mean, anybody can order. You can order anytime through distributor, order from them directly, whatever. Wait for a show game. But if the game sells out like Winchester did in two days, it would then activate a seven-day grace period where if you were a member, Or you could then phone up Barrels of Fun and say, hey, that game just sold out. I want to go ahead and purchase one using my benefit. You could do that. Now, they also told me you could go to a distributor as well if you're a member of the club and purchase a game even when it's sold out from a distributor. And I think that distro just relays your name and information. You could still purchase through them. So this doesn't cut out the distributor. And right now I think distributors, nobody contacted distributors before they did this, by the way. This was launched on everybody all at once and nobody had any idea. So they're like, great, Barrels is freaking taking sales. Not necessarily based on how this works. So in the case of Winchester's Mystery House, if you were a member and that game sold out after two days, you could then exercise your benefit and go ahead and get on the list. Now, are they going to hold some back? Are they not? No. 525 is what Winchester had. They would sell all $5.25 and then however many members, which the memberships are unlimited. There's not a limited number of members. As many people can pay $75 as exists on planet Earth. It's still one per person, one membership per person. But let's say there's 100 people that are in this group and they all want to exercise their right to purchase Winchester after it's sold out. That would then extend the numbers another 100. And then after that seven-day period is over, the grace period window, then all sales are closed, whether you're in the group, whether you're not, whatever.
  • Don is planning to purchase a Sonic machine from Jersey Jack Pinball and attempting to secure early access to play it

high confidence · Don stated this as his current plan regarding JJP's Sonic

  • “I would love a ZZ Top machine. Like picture, I pitched this, like what if it was Bucky's theme but with like ZZ Top music overlaying because it's like Texas on Texas, you know what I mean?”

Don @ end of episode — Reveals Don speculating about ZZ Top design and expressing interest in the rumored title

  • “I honestly don't know what's going on with Barrels of Fun. I don't know what their next game is. And I kind of like that.”

Don @ near end — Expresses appreciation for Barrels of Fun's secrecy despite multiple upcoming titles

  • “Unless something's catastrophically wrong, I think I'm going in on the Sonic C, man. I like the pictures I've seen so far. I like Cary Hardy enthusiasm for it.”

sentiment_shift: Distributors were not consulted before Barrels Reserve launch; initial concern that membership could canibalize distributor sales during grace period or through distributor-based member purchases

high · Don stated: 'nobody contacted distributors before they did this, by the way. This was launched on everybody all at once and nobody had any idea. So they're like, great, Barrels is freaking taking sales.'

  • ?

manufacturing_signal: Spooky Beetlejuice construction significantly faster than Evil Dead due to simplified mechanism design and improved engineering; allows faster build queue throughput

high · Don heard from Spooky build teams that Beetlejuice is 'constructing a lot easier, like a lot easier than Evil Dead was' and noted design changes like 3-screw removable sandworm assembly

  • ?

product_concern: Spooky maintains artisan handcrafted production (hand-soldered wiring harnesses, hand-built ramps) despite improved efficiency; no off-the-shelf wire harnesses used

high · Don explained: 'Everything is soldered by hand... This is a handcrafted product that they're making, and that is awesome' with specific examples of hand assembly processes

  • ?

design_innovation: Don advocates for integrated LCD screens in game sculpts for atmospheric effects rather than large primary screens; cites successful examples in Dune and Labyrinth; expects this in future themed titles

medium · Don discussed screen integration as enhancement to physical sets rather than replacement; mentioned expecting 'a ton of little LCD screens' in Spooky's Hedgehog

  • ?

personnel_signal: Don has obtained contact information for new Jersey Jack Pinball marketing director through advocate relationships; working to secure early access to Sonic machine post-launch

high · Don stated: 'I now have the phone number for the new marketing guy that's at JJP... I can only thank my friends that I have at JJP that advocate on my behalf'

  • ?

collector_signal: Dune secondary market pricing could impact future limited production runs; if Dune machines available at $9,500 (below $11,600 retail), future production runs may not be viable due to lack of demand signals

high · Don explained: 'Dune retails for $11,600. If you can find a Dune with or without a topper for like $9,500, then I don't think doing another run of, you know, 200 of them makes real sense'

  • ?

business_signal: Spooky Pinball explicitly declined to adopt exclusive membership-based early access model similar to Barrels Reserve, preferring to maintain legacy Fang Club for gifting only

high · David Van Es at Spooky told Don: 'we had that fang club and we don't really have that anymore as a benefit for purchasing games early or games guaranteed... not looking at doing any kind of exclusive access upcharge'

  • 4:30
So then at that point they would release what the final build numbers would be. Barrels of Fun doesn't do extra show games and such. I'm sure they do team games. Everybody does. But as far as the numbered games that exist, that's what it would be. Okay, that's what it would be.
    4:46
So that was one of the questions. The other follow question was if I a club member and I exercise my right to purchase your sold game do I get priority build The answer for that was no Okay barrels is sticking to they going to build an order of sales So if you want to get an early game from them the way to do that I sure this is your sweetheart sponsorship deal or something but for all intents and purposes, the earlier you buy or deposit a game, the sooner you will be in the build queue. And if you wait until the game is sold out and you're at the end of the seven-day window, you're going to be at the end of the list, Even though you were a club member. So I did verify that. So it's not priority access. This really acts as FOMO insurance, right? Maybe you want to just have a little bit of, so a game drops, like Winchester dropped and like you had two days to order one or they were gone. So that doesn't give you time to like look through all the media, maybe, you know, get some information, sit on it, talk to the wife, you know, make sure nothing else is available about the drop. This will also buy you a week to say, oh, let me sleep on it for a couple of days. Let me sleep on it for five days and decide if I really want to get one. And then by day seven, you can exercise that benefit. All right. Now, there are some other benefits to it. You will also get a yearly gift. And from what I'm hearing from them, this sounds like it'll be a gift like in a series. Like, I don't know if this is going to be like when you went to McDonald's and like for week one, you can buy the collectible glass from some movie. And then they would have a different character every week. Like if all four weeks of the promotion you can purchase a different Batman glass, you know, all the different characters. And if you went every week to McDonald's and purchased that, you could get the whole set. Or Flintstones Jelly Jars or whatever the hell they were, right? So there will be some kind of collectible. And it sounds like they're going to kind of announce what that is sometime pretty soon. And then every year that collectible will be released. There will be a date that they're going to pick, which is going to be like the renewal kind of date. So if you purchase it before that date, you'll be entitled to that year's prize. After that, you'll be entitled to the one that will come the next year.
    6:55
I guess they'll be exclusive. You can't get them anywhere else or whatever. So, like, that's fun. And then it sounds like they're going to do events, too. And it sounds like they're going to be close to announcing what the first one of these is going to be. But just as a for instance, they were like, what if we did an event at the Winchester Mystery House? Like, you could be invited to that. But if you were at Expo and we had a special room that had food and snacks and things, if you're a member, you can go to that. Barrels of Fun has been doing something similar to people that have bought their games before. You get a Barrels Pin and you get to go to a little private room where you can play their games kind of like unimpeded by the rest of the show floor. So maybe they'll have a banquet. Maybe they'll have a dinner. Maybe they'll have an appreciation event at some of these shows. They'll probably do an open house or two throughout the year. Maybe you get an invite to like media day or public day at the factory to play a new game if you want it. You know, just something kind of fun like that. They didn't rule out extra fees if it was like, you know, if it was an event at Winchester Mystery House or something and they reserved a party room but you wanted to do the tour, you'd probably still have to pay extra for the tour, let's say. Maybe. This is all hypothetical. They haven't announced anything yet. But the gist of it is it's $75 you can pay now and then you get yourself a window if a game sells out. Now, if a game doesn't sell out until, say, day 8, then that's after 7 days this benefit won't kick in. It's only if a game sells out within 7 days and going forward.
    8:21
Opinions are all over the place on this. It got brought up immediately to the folks at Spooky who said, you know, we had that fang club and we don't really have that anymore as a benefit for purchasing games early or games guaranteed. We still have a fang club just for legacy purposes. They send out, you know, gifts and candles and things every year. But essentially they're like not looking at doing any kind of exclusive access upcharge. David Van Ness comes from the theme park industry where pay for play access is absolutely a thing. Go to Disney. This is your lightning lanes. This is your Express Passes at Universal. Go to any concert and there's multiple tiers. You go to like Welcome to Rockzilla or whatever they have in Milwaukee or any Bonnaroo or anything. There's going to be like a festival general admission ticket for $300 or you can pay $3,000 and have a VIP tent, a concierge shopper, and extra snacks and stuff. If you want to have better access, you have ability to pay for that. We see this in a lot of industries. When I had mentioned doing something like this to barrels, my thought was could I maybe have a leg up on getting a game? They don't like to forecast when games release. I don't know what their next release is. I've heard every rumor.
    9:40
But what I was saying is maybe when a game is unveiled, like guess what, this game is available, and maybe 8 in the morning is when they drop it. Maybe for the next four hours, if you're a club member, you can go ahead and purchase during that exclusive window. And then after that sales open to the general public or something You have like a protected sales period of time So they decided to go this method with it which is like offering way more of a benefit I think for me, I now know that FOMO is not going to be a thing with the next Barrels game. If I like it, I can go ahead and pick one up.
    10:15
I know I'm not going to get shut out if I just happen to be like on a 14-hour flight to New Delhi, India, Or I'm going to Thailand or I'm heading to Australia or I'm just like I turned off all my electronic devices for a couple of days to take some personal time. I don't want to come back and find out like I missed the boat or something through no fault of my own. Their last game, Winchester Mystery House, was released right into the run up to Expo where I was running the homebrew topper contest. I was trying to get like T-shirt materials ready. I was trying to put a booth together, booking things, figuring out travel, where am I going to be, what am I going to do, He was setting up interviews and things. So it was a very busy time for me. And then to, like, drop this game on top of it was just, like, more brain processing power than I had time for. Luckily, I had a moment of clarity in the parking lot late at night with Tom McGrath from the Triple Dream Pinball podcast and Fox City's Pinball streaming. It was like, yeah, Don, you probably really should think about getting that. And I was like, damn it. All right. So I've been texting Kingpin already. He's a local distributor to me. You know, and I was just wondering, like, how sales are doing. I was talking to Mad Pinball, I was talking to Kingpin, and he's like, look, I got one available if you want it. And I'm like, no, no, I don't need a game, I don't need a game. And then, you know, freaking Tom talked to him, luckily, managed to scoop one up, texted Kingpin back, and they were able to get me their last one because someone had dropped out. So thanks, Hilton, for dropping. He ended up getting one already.
    11:44
Moral of the story, that's how it works. Barrels reserve, what do you guys think of this? That wasn't the only thing we talked about. Mr. Brian Savage was very forthcoming. What other questions do you have? So remember that dune topper that they took deposits for and all they had to show us was some engineering videos or something? So I've heard that the first version of that in physicality has arrived at the factory and will be going through some on-site testing and things. These toppers are not manufactured at Barrels of Fun. These are manufactured in China from their people. They've sourced it. The engineering was done in China. And so the first ones are like now created and going through like physical testing because up until now, it's just been, you know, 3D imaging or something or whatever kind of engineering they do. So now like the actual ones are getting tested. I heard that one hasn't been tested on a game yet, but they do have a test rig where the motors and things are worked up or hooked up. And there should be some video footage from the company soon about that. So presumably, if that's a word, if everything's going okay with these, they'll probably be rolling off then sometime soon. So we should see video soon from the Dune Topper that was ordered, I don't know the exact date. It feels like it could be anywhere from four to six months ago. But the way time flies, it could be nine months, I don't know. But regardless, like that's coming. I got a production update on Winchester. So last I had checked in with them, I think this was April, I was told that the plan is still to have all of the games, Dune, Winchester, done by September. The update is now October. So we've slipped one more month for the completion of the Winchester Mystery House, which is going to take us right to Expo, which is kind of what I was forecasting and probably they were as well. It sounds like he told me. He told me what day. I think either, gosh, guys, correct me. Either one month or three months from now, Dunes will be finished. And then they'll be able to focus more on the Winchesters. Their staffing levels have been a concern, but they are just about up to full staffing now. So the word that I'm getting is the date may have slipped a month for completion of Winchesters. They have a couple of months left to be complete on Dunes. The plan is still to have Dune available in the future, possibly if demand is there. That's not a hard cap on Dune. Dune, so they could revisit that later. If they're in a position where maybe their next game needs a little bit more time to cook, which is always a good idea, if it's a little bit too early, let it cook a few months, they could maybe revisit some limited Dune production in the future. And the way that that game is growing in notoriety, that sounds like something that may be possible. The only thing that would shoot Dune being reproduced in the foot is if there's a flood and a glut of them available on the secondary market for less. You know, Dune retails for $11,600. If you can find a Dune with or without a topper for like $9,500, then I don't think doing another run of, you know, 200 of them makes real sense. Because demand obviously isn't there if they're sitting in the market at $9,500. Now if Dunes are going for resale and there barely any available then yeah I could see them doing another to run So that that and therefore and whatnot What else did I hear from them? We talked about, I tried to bait them, you know, and I'm like, okay, so with Winchester being done in October, Dunes being finished, that means we'll see the release of Never Ending Story at Expo. And he's like, yeah, Neverending Story or G.I. Joe or Transformers or Another Goonies or ZZ Top. That will probably be the one that comes out. And so I don't know if any one of those is actually what they have. I don't know if they have maybe a cartoon property that I haven't really heard anybody talk about yet. Wouldn't that be some fun? I don't think if that's the case it will be something anytime soon. But I would love to play a pinball machine in a pineapple under the sea. I don't care who makes it. I think, you know, Lock and Patrick under the rock would be super fun. I want to put balls in the chum bucket. Regardless, we had heard from when Barrels of Fun was in its first creation that they had signed about seven licenses or something. And some of those may never see let a day, but I think they still are working through those. So if there is any bauble ponge to be made, that's the French version of Spongebob, I don't think we're going to see that next. But honestly, who knows? Who knows? I think the development of Winchester went pretty quick, even with everything for the coding and everything. We did see Winchester be revealed at Expo, and we didn't see units moving for six months or so. So I guess even if the game still needs time to cook, they've been known to release them. And in the case that they sell out within seven days and you're a member, you can still go ahead and get one. Now, this is not retroactive. You have to be a member before the game's released. You can't then rush and get into it and then retroactively go back and get a Winchester. But that's what I know about Barrels Reserve, which is a whole hell of a lot more than I knew when I woke up this morning because I didn't know anything about this at all. This company keeps surprising us with new things that are coming out. So this was going to go out to the general public and then those of you on Patreon who are also on the Discord, which you should be on as well, said, no, no, screw the freep loaders. Freep loaders. Freeloaders. I want this as a Patreon exclusive. And you know what? You guys give me money. You're the most diehard cool fans and supporters that I have. So if you say you want it as a Patreon exclusive, that's what we're doing. And I gave you more information than I was going to do on the public show. You weren't going to hear any Bob LaPone, so keep that under your hat. So that was super fun. What else is going on? I saw a Beetlejuice in box number 340, so there's some updates for you.
    17:42
I don't want to give you too, too much here. Still a couple of show games room boxes going out. Looked like they were for Europe, for the European show. Otherwise, things are humming along, man, over at Spooky. I don't want to jinx anything, but damn, dude. Every time I go in there, it's like the view never changes. There's like eight Beetlejuices ready to get boxed up, eight Beetlejuices that just got boxed up, and like 35 to 40 all in a line approaching final testing and everything. It's like just humming along great. The feedback I'm getting from the build teams are that Beetlejuice is constructing a lot easier, like a lot easier than Evil Dead was. Some of the differences in engineering that they've learned as far as like making a mechanism that's simpler to install and service is really speeding things along. These things are all still artisan made by hand. These parts aren't made in China and then shipped in and then just assembled. Like every ramp is hand built. You know, the sculpts come in from China, but then you have to have all the engineering bits put onto that Beetlejuice before you can then assemble them in there. You know, you get this rubber dune worm, sandworm, but then you have to put all the mechanisms and things in them, the whole assembly, and then that goes into the game. But the way that, for instance, the worm goes in with three screws that can be removed by the end user, and if there's a problem with the assembly, you can just send it back to the factory. They'll send you a brand new one. You just put it in, and they'll fix the one that you send. So that has been really speeding things along. But when it comes to wiring these things, there's no off-the-shelf wire harness. Everything is soldered by hand. This is a handcrafted product that they're making, and that is awesome.
    19:28
I was asking them about, you know, are you guys thinking of upgrading, like, the cabinet technology at all? Because we did see that from Stern recently going to Spike 3. Jersy Jack really hasn't made any innovations that are notable that we can see. But they started with the 27-inch screen. We've seen Dutch Pinball go to a bigger screen. So, like, is there any demand for a bigger screen necessarily with a spooky machine? Or would you rather see more screens integrated in a more creative way perhaps? That's kind of what I'm thinking.

The Hedgehog, which is just about on us, and the fact that there may be a ton of little LCD screens in the game, I think there's room to add some cool stuff to basically, think of the last five pinball machines that you've really enjoyed. Do you think little tiny, not play-filled LCD screens, but just hidden in the sculpts, hidden in the background, to add more atmosphere, to add more visual cues, would that be something fun for pinball? Well, remember, a screen doesn't have any moving parts but can display all kinds of cool graphics. And I don't want to replace a mechanism or a sculpt ever with a flat screen. But if you had some sculpts and then behind them had a screen with some displaying effects and things, I think that would top it up. When it comes to theme park rides, I prefer dark rides that have moving mechanisms and animatronics and robotic things and three-dimensional set pieces Rather than just wearing 3D glasses and going from screen to screen to screen. But I do like projection mapping. I do like when there's a three-dimensional set and then the background is animated. That gives it depth. I like how the screens can plus the physical sets. I'd like to see that come to pinball as well for like a sculpted area to have screens behind them. I love how it's used in Dune. It works great. I love what they did with Labyrinth. I would love to see screens in games like that. And the way that I can help prove my case and my argument is if I get some backup from the community too. So if you see some pinball manufacturers, mention that you would like to see these areas brought to life with LCD screens so graphics can be on there. Think about that. Think about how cool that would be. I can't wait to talk about one of the future themes that I think this will work absolutely great in. And I going to do my hardest to try to get that integrated probably starting this week So that fun That fun right Patreon exclusive stuff ZZ Top is it Talk to the barrels Talk to Brian And yeah Kaneda broke that rumor of ZZ Top And like they so cagey Like I can't tell if they're just, you know, admitting it in open to keep it hidden or if they're just kind of jumping in on the it's fun to rumor thing. But I honestly don't know what's going on with Barrels of Fun. I don't know what their next game is. And I kind of like that. I either want to know now, get to play it, and then shut up about it, or I just want to be surprised with everybody else. One thing I will say, I would like to get invited to come and play it. Sounds like I'm getting some traction with Sonic at long last. So I now have the phone number for the new marketing guy that's at JJP. He now knows who I am, and I can only thank my friends that I have at JJP that advocate on my behalf. So I'm still going to try to get there soon after launch, play the game so I can give some early opinions to everybody. But at this point, unless something's catastrophically wrong, I think I'm going in on the Sonic C, man. I like the pictures I've seen so far. I like Cary Hardy's enthusiasm for it. Yeah, I think it's going to be cool. Magikarp, dude.

I would love a ZZ Top machine. Like picture, I pitched this, like what if it was Bucky's theme but with like ZZ Top music overlaying because it's like Texas on Texas, you know what I mean? Alright, I'll talk to you guys later, be cool.
