TL;DR

Getaway restoration progresses with rail correction, LED flasher installation, and backbox repainting.

Summary

Cary Hardy continues restoration of The Getaway pinball machine, focusing on playfield rail cleaning and LED installation. He discovers and corrects severely bent cabinet rails that were previously taped, then installs custom flasher LEDs in various colors (red, amber, white) for slingshots, targets, and pop bumpers. Work concludes with backbox repainting in gloss white, high voltage sticker replacement, and light reattachment.

Key Claims

  • The original tape on the playfield rails was placed due to severely bent bars that had been depressed from playfield handling, with coil lugs interfering with normal rail insertion.

high confidence · Cary discovers and documents the bent bars, researches online images to confirm proper orientation, then bends them back to correct shape.

  • Cary chose flex bayonet flasher connectors rather than straight connectors to have directional control over flasher beam projection onto the playfield.

high confidence · Direct statement: 'I went with bayonets to adjust these, how I see fit. Give me more options.'

  • LED bulbs cost approximately $1 each, making bulk replacement expensive; Cary chose to clean existing LEDs instead of replacing all.

high confidence · Direct quote: 'these little babies are just shy of $1 each that shit adds up quick I was like well we'll just clean these things up make them look brand new'

  • After LED installation, only flipper bats remain to be received before the cabinet assembly is complete.

high confidence · Cary states: 'the only thing left to do is flipper bats I have yet to receive those'

  • Backbox restoration includes sanding, repainting in gloss white, new decal application, metal polishing, and high voltage sticker replacement with original staple placement.

high confidence · Detailed walkthrough of backbox restoration process showing sanding, painting, sticker reattachment with four staples, and light reattachment.

Notable Quotes

  • “I found other images online. Sure enough. Yeah. So I was able to bend these bars in the appropriate position”

Cary Hardy@ 3:15 — Demonstrates problem-solving approach: discovering original rail damage through online research and correcting it rather than accepting the damaged condition.

  • “these little babies are just shy of $1 each that shit adds up quick I was like well we'll just clean these things up make them look brand new”

Cary Hardy@ 7:27 — Practical restoration economics: choosing to refurbish existing components rather than full replacement due to cost accumulation.

  • “I want to say the only thing left to do is flipper bats I have yet to receive those that's where we're at on that but the cabinet I believe is should be good to go now”

Cary Hardy@ 7:46 — Project status update indicating near-completion of cabinet assembly, with only one component pending.

Here Here we have the playfield rails and these have seen better days. I'm not sure why this has got tape on it. I did not do this. I'm thinking this was really close to a coil and someone put electrical tape on there just to make sure it didn't accidentally touch it. but I'm gonna get these all cleaned up and get these suckers mounted on I guess still working on it this was the worst of the pair but looks a lot better now so this is one that I've still got to get cleaned up but I mean honestly from one I haven't touched yet to one that I have done some polishing on it's not a drastic change but I'm gonna do some more work on this one to make it a little bit better and then I'll move on to this one either way it still is an improvement though especially compared to what this one at first looked like work continues all right got the cabinet rails on here oh I'm getting old got new wire clamps on here and I'm going to install the LEDs while I've got the playfield in this position to make things a lot easier I want to say that after the LEDs installed I should be completely and utterly done with underneath this sucker hopefully now some of you have already caught this but the reason why that the individual had tape on the bar was due to the fact that they had the bars bent so drastically from handling a playfield that the coil was actually further past the bar the bar is like completely been depressed down but it's been depressed equally on both causing me to think that these bars were supposed to be in that formation but once I saw this I was like there is no way that they expect me to drag these bars up the cabinet like you traditionally would with this coil lugs being in the way That something can be right So I found other images online. Sure enough. Yeah. So I was able to bend these bars in the appropriate position and you will see them in the correct orientation and shape here in just a moment. still going to need to redo this connector right here but every other connector is good this is the only one this is my gi crispy let's go over my order from comet these are my red flashers. I'm going to be utilizing these up here by the slingshots. So every time you hit a slingshot, it's going to flash red onto the playfield. And these are just flex natural whites. I'm doing this so I can, these flex ones, so I can direct the flashers exactly where I want them to go. Because I want to say, yeah, because it looks like these new flasher bowls might be a tad low. So if I was to get ones that just go straight up, they'll go straight up, but I kind of want them to go out towards the plate field. So this is why I went with bayonets to adjust these, how I see fit. Give me more options. ambers oh yeah okay these are gonna be up here behind the targets wherever that flasher is that there's a flasher somewhere up here for the supercharger targets I'm gonna use that for that what dog is out there howling my groat and then these insane natural whites Oh, because an ambulance is coming. Dog's going crazy. Honestly, I don't know what those are going to. I think those are... Oh, yeah, those are going to my pop bumpers. Okay. I usually buy extras. Let's see here. Yeah, this is going for the free ride. It needs to be flexed in order for it to be very luminous. This is orange-amber. single one don't know what the hell that is that may be going to my ramp above the ramp and yep these are going underneath the slingshots and they have the matrix connectors for another non ghosting I usually buy these suckers in 25 packs that for the deal that guys Yep more natural whites I typically go mainly for natural whites It just makes the colors look good and these are what I'm putting up underneath the slingshot for the tachometer and speedometer speedometer plastics I've seen some people do this online I like the way it looks I'm going to do it as well more oh that's the other one that goes with that and some more flasher bulbs this is for the backbox I think that's everything Alright, that is my LEDs. Let's get these suckers on here. Getting these all cleaned up. Making them look all shiny and new compared to what they did look like. I was gonna buy all new ones but these little babies are just shy of $1 each that shit adds up quick I was like well we'll just clean these things up make them look brand new LEDs are all in here I want to say the only thing left to do is flipper bats I have yet to receive those that's where we're at on that but the cabinet I believe is should be good to go now it's time for me to start working on this backbox portion my plans on this I mean I could like oh I'm gonna clean it and all this other kind of stuff it would be good to do no not only am I going to clean it I'm also going to repaint this and new decal polish up of course the metal that's on there you know make it look brand new let's get started everything has been removed front and back side time to do some sanding here we go all right didn't take much sanding to get all the loose stuff off there including the president visit residual that had the decal on here that's all been standing off so everything's all nice and and smooth well except for right here okay well I'll fix that but front side and back side has been sanded I'll clean it off and then I will spray paint it a gloss white nice and shiny turns out I don have any of that though So Charlotte you want to go to the store with Daddy No I love you, too. We already went to the store before. Yeah, it's painted. These little divots are from where the staples were at. be able to see those because I'll staple exactly where they were before. I've already got bugs trying to stick to it. Son of a bitch, get off of there! Asshole. Alright. So, this is going to have to dry, but that's what that looks like now. all polished up reattached high voltage sticker has been put back on there with the four staples just like they did on the originals and it's all nice and reflective it's gonna be really good for the GI up there all right now time to reattach all the lights to the back again and the lights are back on so the backbox board is complete All right. Thank you.
