TL;DR

Grazley Garage unboxes and restores a rare 1974 Allied Leisure Hesitation arcade game to working condition.

Summary

Mike Dus and the Grazley Garage team unbox a pristine 1974 Hesitation arcade game by Allied Leisure, a four-player Pong-style cabinet discovered in a deceased distributor's stored inventory. After initial startup complications due to a disconnected circuit board and dirty connectors, they successfully restore the machine to working condition and play a functional game.

Key Claims

  • Hesitation is a four-player Pong-style game similar to Warlords, where players use paddle controllers to protect corner forts

high confidence · Discussion comparing game mechanics to Warlords; control panel labeled with 'one coin two players, two coins four players'

  • The machine was discovered as part of excess inventory from an Allied Leisure distributor/operator who stored it for decades

high confidence · Direct statement: 'I believe the original guy was an Allied Leisure dealer...distributor...excess stuff that was left behind and stored for all these decades'

  • The Hesitation came with original schematics, parts manual, paddle adjustment procedures, and installation documentation

high confidence · Hosts examine and discuss original paperwork including 'paddle movement adjusting procedure for hesitation model 257' and parts catalog

  • A disconnected circuit board and corroded edge connector were responsible for the machine's initial non-functionality

high confidence · Discovery that 'circuit board had completely fallen off its standoffs' and 'edge connector' was 'crusty' requiring cleaning to restore operation

The first big piece is coming off. Let's see what we got here. The duct tape is strong. Oh, neat. Look at this. I'm Mike Dus [music] and this is Pinball Shenanigans. Okay, we're here at the Grazley garage for an unboxing video of this Hesitation arcade game or whatever the heck it is from like mid70s. No, early early '7s. Okay. 73. I don't know anything about this game. You guys got a a bit of a glimpse of it as you were picking it up, but uh this is still the original cardboard, the original labeling. It's got a bit of the original crating still on it. In terms of markings on the box, we just have an address here that is Florida. That's not even a serial number. 1780 West 4th Avenue. Uh, Helia this side up. Is there any other markings anywhere else? Obviously, uh, the it has been unstrapped. So, we're getting there already. It's fading off. You can see the word Allied. Oh, allied Leisure. Okay. So, there's a theme going on with the where you got this. There's a lot of Allied Leisure stuff. And I believe the original guy was an Allied Leisure dealer. Oh, okay. Distributor. Sorry. Oh, yeah. Well, that would make sense. So, uh, he was an operator distributor guy. And this is some of the excess stuff that was left behind and stored for all these decades. This is MCI. MCI. But this will be on a different video. You don't know what that is. We barely knows what it is either. Hold on. Hold on. We've got unboxing happening here. All right. All right. The first big piece is coming off. Let's see what we got here. The duct tape is strong. Oh, neat. Look at this. All hesitation. This is NOS. It hasn't been stored in the best of conditions for the last 50 years, but this is uh you know, as good as it's going to get for what we're looking at here. Let's uh get rid of this guy. Oh no, that looks like it's attached. Whoa, the whole thing has come off. All right, that was easy. Okay, one more strap to go here. What do you all know about hesitation? Um, looks like there's four players. Four players. If anybody that's watching this knows more details about this thing, I know it's some Send in your comments. Some sort of Pong game. Four player Pong. This is like the OG like Warlords. Using the paddle controllers, up to four players engage in battle, wielding their shields around their respective forts as a deadly ball propels itself all about the screen. That's like a you're at the four corners sort of thing. Okay. So, is there anything? Uh oh, here we got the original key. Look at that. There's some guts. Uh-oh. We got the original instructions. Let's uh let's pull this thing out here and gain access to this thing. Let's uh get rid of all this cardboard. It's a little wee box, but it still works. So, that is important. We're able to access. Oh, can we get into the coin box? Oh, maybe there's another key somewhere. Maybe there's a goodie bag inside. I saw a man. All right, we'll get rid of all this. Not every day you get to unbox an arcade game from before you were born. Yeah. Before I was even born. Before we were all born. Yep. Well, unboxing arcade games before I was born is not difficult to do. This is true. Oh, mouseness. Oh, is it? Okay, let's uh swing this thing around and uh get a look. Okay, here we go. We've got the parts catalog. Ah, so we got some legs somewhere that we got to uh be installing unless they are not included. They don't seem to be included. Okay, so here's some wiring going up top and around here for uh whatever that is. Some like little tubes or something in there. What is that? Looks like radio tubes. little circuit board in there or TV tubes or whatever you call them. CRT. There's the CRT TV. Well, here's the whole schematic they included. Oh, and here's the mouse nest. Let's see the schematic here. Here's the here's the whole thing. Okay, perfect. This could be the only schematics for this game in existence. Who knows? It's actually in pretty good shape. And then the extra paperwork. paddle movement adjusting procedure for hesitation model 257. There's that. Then we got the hesitation control panel installation. Oh, we got to install the control panel. That's what you were saying with wood screws. Here's the original envelope. Allied Leisure Industries Incorporated from Florida. Okay. What else do we got in here? Cuz there's a connector here. It goes in there. Oh, yeah. I see. It goes here. You want to push on the other side. So, not really. It's kind of gross over here. It smells like mouse. Look at this. Here's the original cord. Never been plugged in. Never been chewed off either. That's true. That's good. Uh, this circuit board looks like that's mounted on that angle on purpose. And oh, here, look, there's the key for the coin door. And the original coin box still zip tied shut. So, I should probably grab that. I don't know if uh Yeah, just wrench on it. Yeah. All right. Now, let's go uh see if we can open the coin door. Well, I'm sure we're going to get the exact same view just from the other side. All right. Cool. Hooray. Look at this. Obviously, there's not going to be anything in there. Here's the coin um mech. Look at this uh lever. It's been bent somehow. That lever here is supposed to latch around that. I don't know how that would have got bent. Switch is still clicking away. What is it? Got some Loctite on the uh coin door lock. Okay. Not sure. We really don't have any hopes that this thing is actually going to work. Probably more likely that uh something may blow if we plug this in, but I'm game. Oh, wait. Here. Check this out. It's got a counter on it. And the counter is actually at 999957. So maybe they wind it back at the factory so that you know I don't know maybe they do some testing and stuff before it ships out, right? So that they don't want there to be an actual count when it goes out so that you know your first uh 50 test games don't actually count. But this obviously doesn't have that number of plays on it. What do we got here? Interesting components. It's like little coils or something. Got a few fuses, you guys. Uh Oh, what's happening here? Oh, that's just like um some silicone holding these components from vibrating, I guess. Do John Youssi any batteries or anything? Um like a switch here. Batteries? I wouldn't say so. Do you have a shop back? Should we uh vacuum out this nest before we try and fire things up? Because uh if you guys are game, I'm down for plugging this thing in. Yeah. Do you want to shop back this out first or? Yeah. Give me a minute. All right. One moment. We'll be right back. Okay. Couple things. We're going to go through this parts catalog quickly here just cuz I thought it was cool. We're looking for the legs, which we could not find. And uh the legs are what 12 and well 13 looks like the leg leveler. And if you can turn that for me, that'd be wonderful. Here's all the parts. As you can see, number 12 is legs. Part 235-3-21, but we don't got no legs. So, somehow they got lost in the mix. Front panel assembly. Don't need these anymore. And uh is that and then here's all [snorts] this stuff. Control board assembly, power supply. There you go. There's the parts manual. But Dutch, I think, has managed to figure out the whole control panel thing. No, [snorts] my big caveman brain said just pull. So, hey, look at that. We've got control panel with a start button and controls. One coin, two players, two coins, four players. This is the right paddle. This is the left paddle. This is the top. This is the bottom panel. So, it goes left. Um, what is it? Left versus right. So, I guess two players are both on this side. It's kind of a little dumb. Then you got top, bottom, left, right in the four player version. Okay. Yeah, maybe it's just a big square and everybody has a top, bottom, left, right that they have to protect. Um, we we may never know. But we're going to plug this thing in. We got the shop back. We're going to get rid of the mouse nest first. And then I mean, the dials twist, then we'll be back. Here goes the mouse nest. You want the safety glasses? Oh, no. You probably use the mask, but uh and the N95. No one No one home, so that's good. Yeah, it's actually not too bad in there. No, this may not be the first mouse nest we encounter in all of our unboxings. All right, go ahead. I'll just uh maybe timelapse this part. All right, mouse Nest is gone. Shall we plug it in and see what happens? Keep the back open so we can see if it explodes. Okay. How do you turn this thing on? Where is it on, bud? Uh, is there any evidence of a power switch at the bottom anywhere? Oh, wait. Hold on. Do John Youssi anything external? I see another key. Oh, you know what that's for? Probably these. Ah, yes. Okay. Yeah, there's locks on the front. Oh, let's open that up first. Other way, I think. Oh, all right. We're in. Wasn't holding anything. Is it going down anymore or is that about it? Lift it out. Yeah. Yeah. Hey, it's You got it wedged. Oh, okay. There we go. Now we can get a look at this side. What are these Nixie tubes? These are the tubes I was talking about. These are Are those Nixie tubes? They're old school. No, look. Turn them around. They're all I don't know what I don't know what a Nixie tube is, but they're freaking cool. It's like a light bulb, but it shows it has like all the films are numbers. Oh, what's these are the player These are the scores. Player scores come through these, I believe. All right. Which are green and red. I think they're backwards, though. Well, let's uh Oh, look. Here's our volume switch. Oh, [clears throat] no. That's not volume at all. Never mind. That is a screw screw. Oh, this. Oh, you found it. Yeah. Ah, yes. That's it. All right. So, we need to like lean the whole thing forward without Or maybe backwards. Do we want to pick this thing up and put it on like saw horses? Yep. Let's do it. Why not? It'll be a lot more comfortable. Okay, we'll be right back. All right, we got this thing on saw horses. Throw it in. Yeah, sure. And uh we're going to stick the back panel back on. Just Where's the key for fun? In there. The key is on. was on the uh It's not there anymore. It was on the top. So, did it survive up there? It was right there. Yeah. Feel it. Well, we can just kind of rest it in place. Put it in there when it falls out. Nice hoodie you got on there, by the way, Dutch. I'm tall. Hold on. I can't see it. No, it must have fallen down somewhere. That would have hurt. Oh, no. There's a lip back here so it didn't fall that way. Here it is. Get up there. You got it. No. Can John Youssi it? I can't. Why are we all so short? Got it. All right. Okay. Back in business here. It went underneath the all the paperwork. There we go. Locked back into place. Okay. So, we got access to the uh power switch. I'm assuming this is off. This is fixed in place, but you have to screw it in. Like you have to drill. You have to put your own wood screws in. Oh dear. As per the instructions. Oh, let's see if it turns on first. Okay, so here we go. I'm so scared. In three, two, one, go. Oh my god, we got action. We got lights. We got digits. Whoa. That's not exactly what I thought it was going to be, but we got a light bulb there. We got control panel lighting. And then we've got the uh displays up there. I'm seeing a lack of display, though. Maybe the uh Oh, look at that. We got action here. Um let's not stick our fingers in there. I think uh that would immediately kill us. We may die. Maybe it needs a little bit of time to warm up. There's a couple uh like it looks like there's a connector that's not connected in here. Look. Oh, really? There's a connector that's not in. Uh yeah, maybe it's not. Could be a nonused one. Well, there is. It's not on. What is this switch on the Should I try the switch on the circuit board to see if that does anything? Let's do it. This could be bad. That didn't really seem to do anything. I'll put it back to where it was. Look at the traces here. kind of look a little bit sketch some of these. Oh, I'm starting to smell electronics. John Youssi some of these traces? Don't they look a little bit weird? Well, here's the thing. Early games like this had factory hackery in it. We should probably turn this thing off. I don't like the smell of that. Yeah, we are starting to smell some stuff, so might be time to uh call it. But we got some manner of life. And uh that's about all we're going to get out of this guy. Cool. Nonetheless, we weren't expecting it to work. There's a board in there. If we do get this thing up and running, we'll have to do a follow-up video. I found a spot where that connector goes. Oh, really? Yeah. Wait a minute. There's a circuit board in there. Wait a minute. So, John Youssi this connector that's not that's out right there? Yeah. If you look through this hole, you can see a board. John Youssi like a little like w like spot that it would go in. Oh, you know what? That could be all it takes. Uh, let's, uh, report back in a moment. All right. This could be part of our problem here. This connector was not connected. And the board was had fallen off its standoffs. Yeah. Oh, those looked like bifurcated terminals. That's like straight out of gotly books. But yeah, the the circuit board had completely fallen off the standoffs and probably was grounding out on the uh metal panel. That could have been part of the reason we smelt some funky stuff, but there's a small chance that now that that connector is connected. Small chance. Very, very small chance. Just got to try and mount this thing back and uh we'll give it another shot. Okay, we got this circuit board mounted and um connected. Is it still connected? Freaking hope so. And um you know what? I don't think it's connected anymore. Really? Yeah. Have a look in there. And uh we got it mounted. We might have to reconnect it. One moment. Okay, that was a bit of a struggle, but we got the connector back on and the board mounted properly. It was cockeyed and we had to twist it into place so that the standoffs lined up to the holes. It was a whole thing. But it is done now. And we're going to give this one more try. Like Dutch just said, it can't work any worse. So famous last word. Yeah. We'll see in three, two, one. Ready? Oh, here we go. All right. Imagine this thing actually fires up. That would be crazy. If you start smelling stuff, let me know. Don't see any smoke, so that's a good sign. I imagine it needs a minute to warm up. What's it looking like back here? Same as before. Same. Okay. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be lit up as much as it is or if it's supposed to be more possibly. I'm not 100% sure. Well, wasn't really expecting much, but definitely uh needed that connector connected. So, let's hit the start button. Oh, yeah. Right. It's not mounted. Some [snorts] credits. Oh, okay. Well, here we go. Let's uh see if anything happens when I coin up. All right. Well, we gave it a good college try and uh we need to call in the experts to probably sort this one out. Aka Cory Cook of London Pinball. I'm sure he can figure out. Okay. What happens if I take this out and put it back in? Oh, that's not good. Um I probably wouldn't do that with the thing powered on. I turned it off. Oh, did [snorts] you? Oh, okay. Good. Who do you think I am? Well, I didn't notice. So, I don't know what this crust is. Just generic mud, but the terminals themselves don't look corroded. So, uh, actually, this edge connector [snorts] is a little bit crusty. So, we'll give that a bit of a cleaning. Probably need some cleaner. This is how we got um what was the other thing we got working by doing some receding of connectors. Was that Mario Brothers? Yeah, I think it was one of the arcade games. Mario Brothers or Donkey Kong it might have been. So maybe, just maybe, giving that a bit of a cleaning might do something. Punch out. Oh, it was Punch Out. Yeah, that's what it was. Nice factory hackery right there. Yeah, I assume so. This may be the last kick at the can. And um if it doesn't work, we're going to move on. Okay, we're back. Connectors cleaned. This is the last college try here. Going to plug this in. Turn it on. Not expecting much different. Kevin's uh started cleaning up a little bit. Can see it coming back to life here. The hesitation marquee there is looking good. Control panels looking better. All right. Are you ready? We've got our zeros and our coin door light. There's lights under here, too. Mhm. Looks like Allied Leisure just put some tape on coin return for whatever reason. Oh, was that where the key was? That's where the key was. We pulled it out from the backside. That's why the tape is there. Is a fail. No. Wait, hold on a minute. Whoa. We got sound. Oh, that's that's the crediting up. Is that credits getting added? I think so. Oh, I hit it a bunch of times. Maybe. I don't know. I pressed the start button. That's a timer. Whatever. We got sound. Do we get sound by any chance? We got some sort of sound. We got a couple chirps. Maybe it's a max 15 credits. Well, 15 points per game. Okay. Some signs of life here. Dutch's uh cleaning of the connector did something. I hit that. Oh, it went back to zero. Oh, wait. Hold on. Something's happening over here now. We got a I don't know what's happening. Are we playing a game? Are we playing a game? They're getting points. Oh, we're playing a game. Yay. I want to be player three. Hey, those are tanks. Oh, we got a chirp. Who's winning? I don't know. He is. Don't hesitate. No, he's winning. Do it. Oh, 1110. 11-11. We don't even know if this is turned [laughter] right at all, but we're killing it. I think it's done now. There's less white noise. Green is the winner. All right, Kevin wins the first game of hesitation. That's All right, that's the end of this one. Check out this one next.
