Tilt Studio is known for family fun entertainment for all ages. It started off as Tilt Arcades. We kind of moved away from Tilt Arcades and started Tilt Studios, which have kitchens and bars. We are one of the largest Tilt Studios with over 150 classic arcade games and 21 pinball machines. I think most people come to arcades just to have fun. They hang out with friends and family—just a place where they can socialize and have a good time. So I do see pinball as a social game. We have a really large pinball community here in Arizona, and a lot of people like to gather around different machines and kind of watch over and see what other players are doing, and then just help everybody out. Having the pinball league here definitely does bring a sense of community for all of the players that come in here. Our league started off really small—about five to ten people—and is slowly grown. Right now we have about 30 players that play in our league that happens every Friday night. Tracy and John are two main people that run our leagues. My name is Tracy Lindberg, and I'm one of the Stern Army representatives here at Tilt Studio. Tilt Studio opened in 2016 with 20 pinball machines on site. And not only did it bring in the players—people looked at it and said, "Oh wow, look at that. It's working. Community is growing here." And it sprouted a lot of other arcades, which is good for all of us. This was the first public league that we had tournaments, and a lot of other arcades that opened around here were inspired by Tilt Studio. So it's really spawned a lot of growth in the pinball community in the Phoenix area. It all kind of started here. We get stories from new players when they find out how many tournaments we have here in Arizona. They're totally shocked, and they really just dive in and start playing more and more pinball. So my husband and I had been playing pinball together. We would seek out machines, but we didn't know about competitive pinball until 2013. And as soon as we found out about it and played in our first tournament, we were pretty much obsessed. The types of people we get to play pinball—it's all different age groups. We started Insider Connected about two to three months ago. It really gives the players a chance to compete with each other, and we have all of the scoreboards and leaderboards up on our TVs so that way they can all see and try to beat each other's high scores. The nice thing about Insider Connected is that players get excited about their achievements. So Tilt Studio did see right away—they got their first game that had Insider Connected already on it, and the players were sort of clamoring for more. They quickly installed the kits on every game that had it available. Sometimes when it's not late night, I'll see players that don't play in tournaments, but they'll still be logging in just because that's their way of competing. They can come here on their own time and put their scores in and see how they stack up against other players. Tonight we're doing the launch party for the Foo Fighters pinball machine. The air bench will be five rounds, giving away the translite and the banner to two random players. And then the grand champion plaque will go to the winner. We have a lot of groups gather in the center of all the machines and just sit down and talk and hang out while they're waiting their turn to play. You know, community is one of those things that is a social determinant of health, and it was something I didn't really realize I was missing until I started the league here. At Tilt Studio, and suddenly the community that I had went from being a few good friends to this large group of amazing people. It meant the world to me. It's not possible to fully quantify the value of community, and what this pinball community is here.
