This is NYC Pin Pod in which a panel talks location pinball in New York City and nearby surrounding areas. My name is Benjamin Fiorega. My initials are BCF and my voice sounds like this this week because of my true dreams of Wichita. My name is Erik Sweetland. My initials are HIP and I'm a pinball tournament director in New York City. Hey y'all, my name is Madeline Lin. My initials are MXL. My pronouns are she, her, hers. And my voice sounds like this because I'm still sick. My name is Eric Rubinsky. My initials are ERI. My pronouns are he, him. And I run APAB with Eric Sweebleman. On this week's pod, we'll rundown local competition results. In Ball 2, we'll give you venue updates. And in Ball 3, we'll discuss accessing the pinball community with ERI. Let's get started. Let's talk about competitive pinball in New York City and the nearby surrounding areas in the past week. On Saturday, September 28, 39 players crammed into a private location in Park Slope, Brooklyn for National DrinkBeerDay . I was able to watch the whole thing on stream thanks to pinball underscore NYC on Twitch. After 10 rounds of match play, the top 8 advanced to an A finals and the next 8 to a B finals. Papa Style Dante Oliva came out on top Alberto santana, chris cafaro, alex kelly On the number of whoppers that Francesco La Rocca, the winner of the tournament, got. On Monday, September 30th, in Pinball NYC, Intermission Dolores came to Buttermilk Bar and visited us Colliders. They went away with an 8-8 win, having beaten us in a split flipper tiebreaker. I am pleased to say that I myself affected five points on Metallica, I think. Personally only played three of them, but we won five points on Metallica and I think the other two were because of my coaching to some degree. Although, I say to some degree, let's be honest, hands on flippers, Monica Weitenkamp, Ben Hagen. Nice. Nice. That's to Intermission Dolores for picking up a tiebreaker win over us Colliders. Special When Lit was a virtual visitor at Rolos to the Aristocrats. The visiting home team, Special WhenLit, picked up a 10-6 win. Pinball Union went to Solid State to visit the Mutants. It was a 13-3 loss for the visitors and Jose Garcia emailed us to say, oof, in terms of occurrences, nothing major happened. Deadpool was not part of the machine rotation because of a very sticky left flipper. Balls of Steel went to McKenna's and bested the two for one-ers at home 12-4. The Lionpersons went to At the Wallace in the battle of 3-0 teams and Eric who came away I mean they went through one whilst N-J midtown, right N-Alop found he wanted to use率 for his가 not Webadore, right離-Moneywin or C NoraWork Wennuara Basically, t produzabbI'll finish out my Dom had an explosive game on Hot Wheels to get their two points for them. A fun night. Tough battle. Yeah, Dom is one of those players. You don't see Dom outside of Pinball NYC all that often, but man, he's a good player. Yeah. The lesser players went from one barcade to another and visited the Deluxe Horses in the Crosstown Barcade Brawl, and the Deluxe Horses came away with a 9-7 home win. The Pin Pals went to Owl Farm, and the home team Parliament picked up their first win with more than 8 points, I believe, at a 12-4 win over the Pin Pals. So far, in the left flipper division of Pinball NYC, NYC FSA is the only 4-0 team. There are two 0 and 4 teams, the lesser players and the pin pals both. If we started the playoffs right now, these six teams would be in. New York City Flipper Sport Association, the Mutants, Balls of Steel, the Deluxe Horses, Parliament and Lion Persons would be the top group. Special When Lit and Intermission Dolores would be at the top of the second group. Pinball union and the colliders, the aristocrats and the two-for-oners would be in the lower, I believe we call it the left in lane, playoffs. That's where it would be today. The 0-4 teams, they can get one win and be really close to any of these 1-3 teams right now. It's still too early to really say what's going on, but NYC FSA has a really big advantage at 4-0, The lesser players and the pin pals have a lot of work to do at 0 and 4. On Tuesday, October 1st, in Pinball NYC's right flipper division, the Trolls went to Barcade, Brooklyn to visit Rest In Pinball and they came the closest to a win that they've been so far with a 9 to 7 loss. Congratulations to Rest In Pinball parenthetically RIP. Balldrainers went to Jack Bar in a virtual away match to face the Shlubs and the Balldrainers had an 11-5 win. Danger Danger went to Solid State and No Quarters for Laundry picked up the home win there, 11-5. In the nautical match of the night, Neptune's Treasure went to Boat Bar to face Pinister The replays went to At The Wallace to face the Harlem Globe Flippers. And it really seems like there are trends that these two teams at At The Wallace have the same things happen week after week. Last week, both teams went to solid state. This week, one of them won 14 to 2. These guys Harlem Globe Flippers beat the replays Spinball plus Spooky Pinball. seriously missed a few of these. And the Butterballers picked up a 13-3 win. And Scrapples Squad went to Kettlefish to face Kettle's Hand Grenades. And the Visiting Team picked up a 9-7 win. So far, only the Ball Drainers are 4-0 in the right flipper division. Only the Trolls are 0-4 if the playoffs started today. The Ball Drainers, No Quarters for Laundry, The Pinister Six, Danger Danger, Neptune's Treasure, and Rest in Pinball parenthetically RIP would be in the upper playoff division, the right orbit playoffs. And the Butterballers, the Harlem Globe Flippers, the Schlubs, Kettle's Hand Grenades, Scrapple's Squad, and the Replays would be in the right in-lane division. The Pin Babes have the same record as the replays, but they are three points scored on the season shy of that last playoff spot right now. Also on Tuesday night at the game vault in Morristown New Jersey 15 players gathered for Tuesday night at the vault October week one After playing qualifying rounds until 9 with 5 scoring Kevin Roth won the night besting Drew Greco and Joshua Senzer and Robert Solomon who tied for third On Wednesday night, 14 players came to Barcade Brooklyn for the first meeting of the fifth season of our BarcadeBroon Pinball League. Adam Kane and Matthew Grady were the big point winners for the night. Also on Wednesday, Sunshine Fall League 2024 No. 1 was met at the Sunshine Laundromat in Greenpoint Brooklyn. 8 players gathered, and Sean Grant and Nick Berry tied atop the standings with 27 points on the night after 5 rounds of IFPA scoring matchplay. On Thursday, NoBro Presents Thursday Night Strikes happened at Jack Bar in Williamsburg. 20 players showed up and Adam Kane was the final survivor with 2 strikes, just outlasting David Patlak and Travis Rosenberg. Also on Thursday at Buttermilk Bar in South Slope, Brooklyn, SSPL 6, number 6 was convened. This was the final meeting of the league to determine playoff seedings. Yours truly took the night with 29 points. Well done. Thank you. Robert Wong took second. Kate Martin and Matthew Carlson tied for third. With all six meetings in the books, the finals are set. The top eight going on to A finals. Matthew Carlson, Robert Wong, Zen Zogniak, Benjamin Furiga, Thomas Milburn, Kate Martin, Billy Vassine, and Francesco La Rocca. The B finals, if everyone's available, will be Janos Kiss Gonzalez, Taylor Connolly, AJ Gould, myself, C Barontecamp, Ashur Weinstein, Jason Schecter, also on Thursday, Thursday night at Gebhard's Beer Culture was convened. Five players showed for eight rounds of group match play. Glen Gilliar and Nick Berry tie the top of the standings with 38 points after those eight rounds of IFPA scoring. Next week in New York City and nearby surrounding areas on Monday, October 7th in PinballNYC's left flipper division, the Mutants will come to Commonwealth and visit Intermission Dolores. The two for oners will take a very short subway trip. In fact, I would just walk up from 14th Street to 23rd Street to face the lesser players at Arcade Chelsea. We colliders will take the long trek to visit the aristocrats at Rolos. C The Parliament will go uptown to Gebhard's Beer Culture to visit the Lionpersons. D The Deluxe Horses will come down our way and visit the Pin Pals at Skylark. C New York City Flipper Sport Association, Eric's Association among others, will go to Barcade Brooklyn to visit Pinball Union. Our Barcade Brooklyn Pinball League Wednesday Night Friends, Woody, is on Pinball Union. Indeed. Indeed. It's a battle of the Barcade Brooklyn Pinball League TDs. Ah. Ah. Very good. Well, I'll look forward to hear both what you have to say about it and what, hopefully, Jose Garcia has to say about it next week. Yeah. Stretching the concept. Also, on Monday night, if you aren't on a team or you're a little bit farther Out the Island, Stern Army at Round 1 hosted by LI, which stands for Long Island, I'm sure, Pinball Society, will be met in Hicksville, New York on Tuesday, October 8th for the fifth round of the right flipper division in Pinball NYC. Pinballers will visit Neptune's treasure at Milo's yard. Pinister 6 goes to Birdie's to see the Pin Babes. Rest in Pinball goes to Jack Bar to see Schlubbs. Kettle's Hand Grenade will face the replays at Rullo's. Butterballers go to Sunshine Laundromat to see Scrapple's Squad. The Harlem GlobeFlippers will travel to Buttermilk Bar to face Danger Danger. Also on Tuesday, October 8th, Tuesday Weekly at the Vault will be met at the Game Vault in Morristown, New Jersey. On Wednesday, October 9th, the second meeting of Barcade Brooklyn Pinball League's fifth season will be held at Barcade Brooklyn. Also on Wednesday, October 9th, the Fall 2024 JPA Tournament No. 4 will be met. That is part of a Target Match Play Series, I believe is how that works out. That is at 8 on the Break in Dunellin, New Jersey. Also on Wednesday, October 9th, the Wednesday Night Sunshine League will be met. On Thursday, October 10, NoBro Presents Thursday Night Strikes will be convened at Jack Bar in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The South Slope Pinball League Finals, as we outlined the competitors earlier, will be met. That said, if you have not competed at all, you can show up and play in the C Finals. You won't get any whoppers for it, but it's a fun knockout tournament. Atomicocrealturnament. Anyone who has played and might be on the bubble, you can show up. There will be a quick, fun knockout tournament to play. Also on Thursday at Gebhard's Bierkultur on the Upper West Side. Thursday night at Gebhard's Bierkultur will be met. On Saturday, October 12, South Slope Pin Golf will be convened in Brooklyn. I didn't actually see, is it Rolos? The South Slope PinGolf is meeting at Rolos as the meeting point. That's where to go. Very good. Do you have a time on that? I stupidly didn't get one when I went to the calendar. 3 p.m. 3? Cool. It will be at Owl Farm, Skylark, Monroe, Young Ethel's, Commonwealth, Rollo's and Buttermilk. Super cool. 3pm sign up at Rollo's. On Sunday, October 13th, the monthly Jersey City Open, October 2024, will be convened in Hoboken. That'll be at Barcade Jersey City. As of October 6th, 2024, there are 276 pinball machines in New York City at 85 public locations. Thanks to the creators and users of Pinball Map for this data, here are machine updates from the past week. Last Sunday, September 29th, a Johnny Pneumonic was added to single-cut beersmiths in Queens. On Tuesday, October 1st, user JNS stopped by Greenpoint BeerandAleCompany and said that the Mandalorian Pro plays fine, sleepy slings, dirty playfield. Whereas the Jurassic Park played fine, I just played it poorly. On Thursday, user DanTastic commented on the new The Uncanny X-Men LE at Sunshine Laundromat. He said, X-Men to me. Perhaps he meant, to me, my X-Men. On Friday, October 4th, user Benjamin Furega played the Star Wars at H&H Reserve in Williamsburg and left this comment, Eric, there's a piece of plastic on the playfield that clearly broke off a light. On Saturday, October 5th, user VDR was in Coney Island and noted that the Munsters Pro at Atomiconsider, Dino's Wonderwheel Amusement Park is up and running, but the Rollinging Stones at Margarita Island is still turned off. Also on Saturday, an Iron Maiden was added to Kee Bar in Bushwick, a fact I noted later in the evening when Eric Rubinsky and I stopped by there for APAB. Ball Three! Let's talk about identity and pinball. This week we have special guest Eric Rubinsky, co-leader of the APAB Assigned Pinball at Birth tournament series and hangout. Today we're going to discuss the various doors and entry points into the larger community that is the pinball one. Eric, how are you today? Eric, how are you? I'm still sick, mind and body, I promise. Eric, we talked a few weeks ago about how the tent got bigger and I've met a lot of new people. You are one of the new people I have met in the pinball community since after the pandemic. C Barontec, what brought you to the pinball community or to pinball? I mean, you know, the community might have found you or you might have found it, but what brought you to pinball? Was it the community or was it the pinball? I have a friend Drew Grifner that had recently joined Bells and Chimes She actually joined in 2020 in like January maybe and had a great time with the group and invited me to join as I considered myself a woman at that time however dubious And so she invited me to join Bells and Chimes and I did and as Madeline had mentioned two weeks ago it was and is such a welcoming group and very friendly to beginners. I went to one meeting in February 2020 and then as we all know there was a good long break. What happened? I forgot. We just had a nice vacation there. We had a little bit of a Thanos snap. And then once things were reconvening after that, I actually joined Bells and Chimes in earnest. Probably 2022, I imagine something like that 2022 2023. When you say in earnest, you mean not casually, but you were really trying to compete for the end game of the league. Is that, was that what you mean when you say in earnest? I, I was just trying to participate in earnest and, you know, go every week and people that became friends and, you know, just really be a league member at that point. Um, and Bells and Chimes, was the first place that when I was transitioning, I'm a trans man for anybody listening. I can't see my obvious handsome looks and you're my deep voice. You can hear that. There are a lot of steps to transition and there's no particular order. Everybody does it ad hoc, whatever works for them and in whatever order. But one of the common pieces is a name. Twozd MaleượngNino, one a stop شي, Tally pre Elaine siinä, Yintylamine, I must have asked someone how do I change it and someone very helpfully told me how to change it both for each night and eventually on the IFPA site itself. It allowed me to see my new name in print over and over again, which is helpful in seeing I'm just wondering if that's a good fit for you and getting practice because it takes practice to hear your name, your new name and attribute it to yourself. Sure. Yes. Also for others to attribute it to you. So it was great to have that printed right there and for everyone for every round to have that little reminder of my new name and they were more easily able to remember to call me by it. And so that was maybe the best thing, the easiest thing for transition was transitioning my name in Bells and Chimes. And everyone was very accepting and wonderful. And it was very easy. So it meant a lot to me that in addition to just having a great group of people around, a great group of women that It was also great name practice of hearing and seeing my name and eventually deciding that that was the name I wanted to keep. Yeah, that's awesome. I remember seeing it change in match play. This thing in the making. I like how you got the chance to practice with not only a new identity but also the new John Papadiuk, Black Water, person's name or role at Stern Pinballbreviartwork panel in backbox that is backlit during play [♪ as a welcoming to beginner kinda group, you not only got to try out the game, you also got to try out a new name. So you got a two-for-one there. Yeah. Yeah, it sure sounds like community is what brought you to the pinball instead of the other way around, which is cool. Absolutely. And I found that outside of bells and chimes, that feeling of community certainly continues. You can pretty much go into any pinball bar and there's a good chance you're going to run into somebody you know. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. It's a big tent, but it's also a small town and a big city in a certain way. Yes. The third space, there's many but also there's few of them. It's nice because you know, you join for the group and then you learn the hobby. And then when you have the hobby, you get more friends with the hobby. So it's sort of a also positively reinforcing thing. You get more friends, you get more hobby, you get more friends, you get more hobby. I'm glad that has continued for you and I guess also for me. I didn't I didn't realize it that way until just now. Yeah, that's awesome. Now that the hobby brought you in, what's exciting about pinball? Or now that the community brought you to the game, what's exciting about the game? The feeling that you're so close to really getting somewhere skill-wise, and yet so far. It is something you can watch yourself progress skill-wise in if you just try, if you just spend the time. So there are a wide range of people that play pinball. It's really welcoming to introverts, to extroverts, to introverted extroverts that want to be in public but not necessarily interact to a great degree. I agree. You're playing with people, but you don't really have to interact if you don't want to. It's always okay to like step away, go outside. You get a built-in break whenever it's your turn in the tournament. Exactly. So it's a nice way to interact in however much you want. Another great thing about pinball is the neurodiversity that appears. There are neurotypical people and there is a great amount of neurodiversity. I guess since we're jumping into the pool with identity and such, you know, I'm also autistic to a certain degree, not that it has to be on a spectrum, but that's also kind of why I became a special ed teacher in addition to a science teacher, because it's teaching my own people. But you are right with that conversation and introvert versus extrovert piece. If you're going to have a conversation with the other three people who are waiting, your conversation is limited to however long that life or ball that person is playing. So if you run out of things to talk about, well that's okay because the conversation doesn't have this indeterminate amount or length of time. It's just like, oh, ball's over, okay, nice talking, okay, bye bye bye, I have to go, I have to go. And you don't have to worry about transitioning verbally out of the conversation. I am really going to have to worry about having your segue or whatnot. You're like, Oh wait, Oh, Oh, Oh, Okay, Okay. And then you just leave and it's perfect. You don't have to worry at all. And then also if you're not talking, yeah, I'm just really focused on the game that they're playing. Now. I said I have anything else to talk about. So I'm going to pretend to look in the direction of the table. It will be fine enough. There's also useful strategy advice to be gained from watching the game. Yes. Yeah, it's true. There, you can, you can play a serious competitor. A pinball editor card. Yeah, you can be at a pinball tournament and want to watch other people play pinball and not want to talk. Yeah. It's okay. And as you point out, Eric, that's the space is so welcoming for it because it's baked in. I think headphones is also an element. Some people use headphones to listen to music and others use headphones as a sound barrier. attend Unait-Tuiorsch vì Sunday at 14 18 10 primefile??? So those are the avoidance strategies. And on the other hand, if you are somebody that wants to interact with people and is shy or doesn't know how to get into conversations, you can show up at a pinball tournament as knowing nothing about pinball even. If you look like you don't know what you're doing and you want help and kind of look around, someone will probably say, hey, do you need any help and sort of help you Get started And people are very generous with information about pinball I have yet to come up with anybody that won tell you how they did something or give you a tip if you want I was at our wonderful Wednesday Barcade League run by Eric Sweetland and Woody Richmond and I was saying oh I keep meaning to like look up a video of John Wick and get some tips and Jonah was there and said, Oh, just ask me. I'm here. Jonah is very knowledgeable and helpful and explains things in a way that I can easily understand. And sure enough, I did much better after that on John Wick. Nice. And we were playing against each other in the group of four. So there's the culture of pinball is very much. I want to win on Knapp Arcade, shots unint in the right way. You know, yes, one's competitive, but that doesn't really ever stop anybody at this level of from being helpful to one another or giving a tip or information. I think the culture puts a much higher value on community than competition. I like that. I'm sure that that same thing was happening among players from Ontario who came down, you know, that they, they were sharing their strategic things so that they could help each other out. Because while you're playing against each other, you're, as you point out, the community is kind of the thing that brings you, even if you want to put on your noise canceling headphones to get away from it for a minute, something. I love how serious we take such a silly thing. And I think it's that contrast that makes it just so lovely. You know, that makes it so friendly. Is, you know, we can all acknowledge we're talking about a silly game with some flashing lights, and we turned it into a whole worldwide competition. It's a lot of fun. It is a lot of fun. All of that sort of kinetic feedback and such is quite enjoyable also. You don't get the same sort of stimulus or stimming from the neurodivergent vocab list from like an arcade cabinet. There's none of the buzzers, there's none of the, you know, rotor motors that like shake the whole table. You can click a button or two, but there's no solenoid to thump the entire wooden cabinet. And maybe get a little bit of haptics nowadays with the fancy controllers on your console. The amount of physical and immediate feedback and different feedback that you get on a table also helps you, I feel like, enjoy the game more beyond just light and sound. The tactile sensation of it is something that a video cabinet has a really hard time creating any sort of corollary to. One of the things that I like best about this community is that no matter where you go, like you were saying, Benjamin, You went to Buffalo and heard that wonderful conversation. When I went to Buffalo for that tournament last year, I met a good friend of mine, Polly Jean Vernon, and she's traveled here for competitions in New York. And I recently visited her in Toronto this summer and saw her home pinball bar, Cabin Fever, which I highly recommend. Side note, if you go to Cabin Fever and Polygene is there, she might be accompanied by her cat, Dwayne. Aww. Yes. Very sad I didn't meet Dwayne. Dwayne is a regular at Cabin Fever. And Dwayne feels very at home there and in the neighborhood. Dwayne sometimes wants to go outside, so she lets him out. Live egy beetje of a amid a the in the by a in my be reputation The sound engineer that goes on tour with various bands all around the world and writes postcards to Dwayne addressed to Cabin Fever. So Cabin Fever has postcards up addressed to Dwayne, the cat. Can the cat read them? The last time I saw Dwayne at Cabin Fever, he was sitting at the bar having a very nice conversation with the bartender. You could tell he just felt very comfortable there. But I believe I'm gonna say without knowing for sure that Cabin Fever is where the first international meeting of APAB took place. So Holly Jean took APAB to Toronto and hold an event there nice that's awesome so it's very exciting that this group started by Eric and myself has not only an international but a non Eric led after but you get two erics for the price of one in New York at our last meeting we had I think it It was mostly trans masc and non-binary people there, but any trans or genderqueer people are welcome and it's just a nice casual pinball hang. And I think Eric and I were the only two pinball regulars and everyone else was new to pinball and we definitely had a couple of people that seemed interested. I'm a Baywatch. How you do. How you do when you got six people to show up, right? That's right. When is the next meeting of APAP? Unscheduled? There's future coordination with another group, the Non-Binary Picnic. Right. Wanted to do a collab. That's cool. We scheduled that tentatively for November-ish. But no sooner than Halloween. Last night was an APAP meeting. Right. Yes, I did. I went to a showing of Transcripts, which is started by two comedians and they do do a reading of a script, but trans. Transcast. Transcast. And they did a reading of the initial, the original, New Girl pilot with notes from the pitch Bible that Liz Merriweather had put together and oh my goodness, what a difference from the original pilot to the aired pilot, for the better. That was a different kind of APAB meeting that we had. We're starting to partner with these other local events, these other local trans and genderqueer events, like Nonbinary Picnic coming up, and we went to Transcrits, and then afterwards played at Kee Bar. I'm glad now we're not only bringing new people in from the pinball community, but also we're linking one pinball community to another community. And now, you know, we're getting several adjacent tents becoming a bigger tent. You could say it's intense. Fabulous. That's all for this week's pod. Join us next week when we'll run down local competition results. In Ball 2 we will very likely have a venue review in addition to the location update and in Ball 3 I'm not 100% sure what we'll talk about but I have a feeling that it may have to do with music and pinball. Between now and then, no matter what you're up to pinfolk, go get em'! Here are 10 clips, you should gleichgan clientele of your ginyu to follow along in preparation of
