TL;DR

Comprehensive Hobbit pinball tutorial covering layout, modes, and strategy

Summary

Joel Ingleberth from Flip N Out Pinball provides a comprehensive tutorial of The Hobbit pinball machine (Jersey Jack Pinball, 2014), covering playfield layout, shot progression, five major game sections (Beast Multiball, Shire/Spinner progression, Lock mechanics, Mode qualification, and Dwarf Frenzy), and mini-wizard modes. The tutorial demonstrates gameplay mechanics including the fishtail ramps, drop targets, mystical creatures, and the epic Smaug multiball sequence. Ingleberth emphasizes the game's thematic depth, sound design, and varied mode ruleset that requires strategic planning across 32 modes.

Key Claims

medium confidence · Joel states: 'There is a mode I've never seen, which is if you do play I don't know if you have to play or complete all 32, I think it's called Darren back again' [likely misheard 'There and Back Again']

  • The upper right flipper is largely optional and rarely necessary for standard gameplay

high confidence · Joel: 'Some people feel like this flipper is completely useless. There are a few modes where you specifically are supposed to use it, but honestly, you can kind of play the game without ever really focusing on using it.'

Hello, my name is Joel Ingleberth and this is the Flipping Out YouTube channel. Thanks so much for clicking on the video. Uh yeah, hopefully you guys are enjoying these. I'm loving making these tutorials. These are a lot of fun. Uh I like studying up on the games and I like teaching because uh hopefully people watch these and play the games better and get a little deeper in the game or experience something in the game they haven't seen before. And um this is actually this brings me back. This game is The Hobbit by Jersey Jack Pinball. This game was made in 2014. Uh it was their second ever game and I owned this game, not this exact model. This I'm borrowing from Zach and Nicole. So, thanks so much for letting me borrow it. They got this in on trade. So, if you're looking to get a new game, feel free to trade in an old one. That's a great way to get uh something new uh and trade out a game that you've played a bunch. But, I owned this game and I owned it for over a year and I absolutely loved it. This game um has some amazing thematic moments, some amazing modes. Uh the sound is incredible. Um so hopefully you guys have a chance to play one sometime soon and experience The Hobbit. Uh hope you know bring headphones. There's a headphone adapter on the front and just enjoy the journey. It's it's such an amazing game. Shots and layout. Let's dive into shots and layout. So widebody game, lots of shots. We got the far left side. That is the out lane. in the out lane. It has a physical kickback which will actually kick the ball all the way up to feed this upper right flipper so you can take some important shots during some of the modes from that uh upper flipper. Uh then you have two inlanes on both sides and then the right side is just a normal standard outlane. There is a target right here. So if you somehow hit that, I genuinely don't know what that target does. If you know what that target does, comment below and let me know. Um, but the inlanes, the important things with the inlanes deal with what's here in the middle of the playfield. It has uh beasts that'll pop up out of the playfield and you have to bash their face. Kind of like the trolls from Medieval Madness. But the shots correspond with the inlanes. The far left in lane is this shot. The warg the the the middle in lane is that shot. Same thing. Middle in lane over here is that shot and the far right in lane is that shot. Um, so you basically when you go through an in lane, there's a good chance that one of those beasts is going to pop up and you got to be ready to uh to hit one down. Um, there is a there are a ton of drops. A ton of drops in this game. So over here are the uh what is it? The elf targets. Is that right? Yes. Elf targets over here. So ELF are the targets over here. Targets over here are the men target me. And then up here, the five the five drop targets up here are the dwarf targets. Um, and you'll have to hit the targets, not only the drop targets, but also the targets behind them at certain modes. There are some modes where the drop targets blocking the target behind it. So, you got to drop that and then hit the target. So, there's a lot. This is like a sharpshooters game. There's so many different things to shoot at. Another thing is the lock buttons here in the middle. These are actually rollover buttons or rollover switches. So, that's what you're going to roll over to spell lock to then lock balls for multiball. There are two or uh two spinners on the orbits on the far right and the far left. And there's a magnet back here. So, there are certain times where you can actually shoot the ball back in the orbit and it'll the magnet will drop it, grab it and lock a ball for um for one of the modes. There's a vertical upkick. So, if you hit these two drops down, there's a vertical upkick right here which will feed that in lane. or if it's starting a mode, it might get diverted and then feed over here in the out lane. Uh cuz there's an uppost here to start certain modes and do stuff over there. Then we have the the dragon mech, the smalle mech. It's just cosmetic. You're not bashing him or trying to hit him or anything, but um when you do lock balls, you see it says lock right here. When you lock uh the multiball, it's going to feed and then it drops down here below um as if you're locking it um in his pile of gold. Uh the two main ramps are right here in the middle, kind of like a fishtail ramp. So the left ramp is actually going to feed to the right, the right ramp's going to feed to the left. You're going to use those ramps throughout the throughout the game to do different things. The left ramp is for uh changing the pages of the book or choosing your mode or adding time within the mode, while the right ramp is locking a ball for that smalle multiball or starting a mode. And I'll explain how that all works. Then we got a capped ball here right up the middle. Uh, that's how you'll do some of your mystery rewards and some other mode shots. There's a mystery target right here on the right. And then we got a pop bumper cluster back here. And there are modes that you actually have to hit back there into Baggins to uh qualify certain things in the mode. Then we have that other vertical upkick uh kind of uh gobble hole. And um it's a very important shot. That's how you start your wizard mode. So there are times where that shot seems impossible. You can backhand it on some otherwise you got to go straight at it. Then you have that right orbit that we talked about. And then we have the upper flipper. Some people feel like this flipper is completely useless. There are a few modes where you specifically are supposed to use it, but honestly, you can kind of play the game without ever really focusing on using it. Um, and that's the shots and layout. Nothing crazy. You will see over here in the right there is a book on the playfield. And that's a great way to know when you're in a mode what to do that you just look down there and you figure that out. So, let's go ahead and start a game. Okay, one thing right off the bat is skill shots. There are multiple different skill shots. So, right now, my lock targets are gold. So, that means my skill shot would be I'd be aiming for the lock targets. If I hit the button now, you can see the skill shot is my drop targets are scrolling. So, you'd want to full plunge and try to hit the appropriate drop target to get that skill shot. Then, this one is you're trying to you're trying these drops over here are up. So, you'd want to full plunge and hit over there. And then there's the last one is down here where you actually want to short plunge or try to drop it in there. So, there's a bunch of different ways that you can do this. Let's see if we can hit this drop target. Let's do that. There we go. And oh, there's the R. So, I missed it. Okay. So, once you're in a game, where do we want to start? The key to this game or the wizard modes is understanding that there are essentially five quadrants. I don't know what's the right word for five sections up here. So different sections do different things. So let's just start on the bottom left, which is the beast multiball. So I talked about this before. If you go over an in lane, you see how it popped up my orc and then you want to hit the orc. So now you can see that this section is completed. So let me roll over the warg. Boom. Hit that. Now that section's completed. You'll see that right there. And then same thing with the other side. Goblin. Let's hit it. And you can see these are lit yellow. And then so the last one is spider. And as soon as I do that, I just started a multiball. So now this is beast fren frenzy multiball. Nothing crazy, but basically you're hitting beast. So this is a great thing to bring into a mode or you want to start a mode first, but basically you're going to hit beast throughout it. Um you can actually start modes afterwards, too. But the more you do this, you can see um you're basically building up the jackpot. And then I think after you get to a certain point of hitting them, there's like a super jackpot. Um, there we go. So I think that's a super jackpot because that was flashing red. But yeah, that is beast multiballs. Nothing crazy. Just you do your inlanes and then you hit the appropriate guy that pops up. One thing you'll notice now is I have this little arrow, this little triangle. That means I have completed that section. So let's talk about another super easy section, the the Shire. This is spinner hits. You just want to keep hitting spinners. As you hit spinners, you're slowly going to progress up the map and then you'll eventually get to Arendelle. Aaron, you'll hear him say it. So, this is something you kind of just chip away at. So, Arabore is what it is. So, there you go. Welcome to the kingdom of Arabore. There you go. And just like that, you're going to see I I've just earned that other little arrow. Uh so that's two parts of it done. And we have super spinner now. Uh enough spinner hits. And what that'll allow you to do is when you hit an orbit, do you see how those shots are green? Uh what it's going to do is if I can hit the shot, there's a magnet back there. So it just grabbed the ball and dropped it. And what that means is I now have a ball. You can see it up here. Locked for my next mode. All right. So, that's that upper right section. Let's talk about this section. Lock. If you look, my K is solid. That's cuz I rolled over it. If I roll over the C, now my C is solid. So, basically, you want to spell lock. And then now look at the right ramp. That's where I lock the ball. So, let me uh go ahead and lock a ball. Here we go. Look at him. He's talking to me. So, ball unlocked. You can see it here. So, guess what we have to do to light the second lock. We basically will have had to expel lock again. I already did, which is why lock is still lit. So, there we go. There's my second ball. How do you choose to die? All right. And let's see where we're at. I just need two more to start that. But before I do, um, I want to show you. Well, here, this is what you can do. You can roll over it. Do you see how lock is lit? Let's say I don't want to start the lock. I don't want to start the multiball. I can hit the action button and it'll flip it to the mode and that'll allow me to start a mode. Now, how did I qualify modes? If you look up here, there's Gandalf. Um, there's Gandalf. Wow. Thoren. I can't think of what's his name. Ratagas, Gandalf, and Bilbo. Holy cow. Bilbo. So, by hitting both of those shots, that's how you qualify them. Or you want to spell. So, like I just qualified the elf modes because I spelled elf. If I hit the dwarf down, now I've qualified dwarf modes. Uh, you can see what mode you're going to play based off of the book. So, right now, if I started a mode, so let me turn off my lock. I would start the resurgence of Sauron. So, this is me starting that mode. Now, it's a two ball mode because remember I had locked one on the orbit. So, all you got to do is look at the book. It says shoot left ramp. So, this is a pretty easy mode because all you have to do in this mode is shoot the left ramp over and over again. Um, as I drop that ball. Uh, but every time you shoot the ramp, it gives you more time. So, I always remember this being a very easy mode to complete. Um, let me see if I can get around that. Yeah. So, you look at that. You see I'm at 26 seconds. It also says 75% complete. And just like that, I've completed my mode. So, super easy. That mode happened to be very easy. You can see once again over here on the right, Orc Attack has three stars. So, if I wanted to start Orc Attack, all I'd have to do is change to my mode and I could start Orc Attack. So, Orc Attack. This one, look at the screen here. You have to shoot your arrow. You're trying to shoot it enough to hit that. And then now, what am I supposed to do? Bash the orcs. So, there we go. This one's pretty simple. Uh, now it's saying shoot drop targets. So, it's always flashing yellow shots. So, there we go. Let's shoot him again. And now I have to hit those. And shoot them again. And one more time. Targets. I said one more time. I'm at 85% 95%. Boom. And that's that mode. So, I think they really do a good job of making the modes feel different than the ones prior. The reason the music's going nuts right now is because it really wants me to start multiball. You can see here in the middle of the grid, I think there's 32 modes, and the ones that are solid are the ones that I've completed. But, you know what? Let's go ahead and start multiball. All right. This is an awesome multiball. Smog multiball. Um, basically you're you're working through a set of stuff to potentially shoot and kill smog. Um, which is an amazing moment. So, there we go. Epic music. Basically, if you look at all the shots, all the ones that are have burning arrows are the jackpot shots. So, I've actually just started a mode at the same time as this multiballs going on. So, keep shooting my uh my burning my burning shots. I think that's the mode shot. Yeah, that's saying shoot drop target. Yep. So, it's this mode is all about hitting whatever the one drop target is. Now, shoot right. And shoot captive ball for the mode. There we go. Shoot left loop. There we go. I just beat another mode. Just like that. So, once you get through enough jackpots, do you see how his uh shots are freaking out? There we go. There's my super jackpot. So, now I do some more. So, just flaming arrow shots. Flaming arrow shots. Uh, let's just do more flaming arrow shot or this a multiball. You can see less and less of them are lit because I'm in the second phase of this. There we go. And just these two on the left are lit. And then now, do you see how the targets in front of him are freaking out? There we go. So, that's through the second series. So remember, still multiball for flaming arrow shots. And man, when you have the music cranked uh and the the base of his voice, this is such an epic wizard mode to play or mini wizard mode like multiball to play. So I only have that left ring to shoot. There we go. Now I have to shoot him. Okay, this is where things get kind of crazy. So now I have to hit the man targets. I think hit the dwarf targets. Um, uh, then I hit those the man targets. Then I hit the man targets. So, it's back and forth. And then I think I need to hit what is it? Uh, I don't remember. Oh, man targets. Man targets. Okay, thanks for yelling at me, Gandalf. Then I think I have to hit that target. The man targets. There we go. Okay, now if you look, only the right ramp is lit. So, what this will do is it'll load up a shot. It's going to feed the upper flipper, and you have one shot to kill him. That's what's going on. So, I'm going to show it. I don't think Zach's going to let it play out, though, cuz it's pretty epic. So, watch this. It's going to feed the upper right flipper. You have one shot. Boom. And just like that, watch this light show. It's awesome. Like, I can't. It's such an incredible moment. And then we have like a victory lapse multiball right here. So, I'm going to let all these come out. Okay, while this is going, uh, no, I'll wait. I'm going to let that shoot again go turn off. So, let's just uh wait for the shoot again to turn off. Okay, so after the victory laps, I drained down to one ball. So the key here is seeing we've beat a mode. We've beat the orbits. We've beat the we've played. All you have to do is start the multiball. Same with this. Start the beast multiball. So the thing that I have left is this. This is dwarf frenzy. Uh you have to hit you have to collect all the dwarves on the playfield. So, the only ones I haven't collected, these two that are grayed out, I think are nori. Nori, give me a shovel. And then I think it's this other one. This other purple one right here. So, you have to drop it down and hit the drop iron right. Okay, who do I miss? I think it's the only other one that's flashing purple there. Boom. So, it's normally something you kind of do by accident, but that starts Feast Frenzy. So, Feast Frenzy is just a um It's a mode that goes on the backwards. So, collect dwarves for value. Um, and being that I've done all five things, I've qualified the first mini wizard mode, which is into the fire. And this is where things get tough because you have to hit that shot. And it's like, it's so agonizing. But imagine, yay. Boom. Hit it. Now, check out this mode. And into the fire. This is an awesome mode. If you look at the book, save 12 party members. So, the way that you save them is you have to hit green shots. So, basically, every time I hit a green shot, it'll pop up the warg and then you hit the war down. So, there's a green shot. There's a green shot. There's a green shot. Green shot. Green shot. Green shot. That's a green shot. I have five more members to go. There we go. The warg increases super jackpot. So if you see him pop up, might as well hit him. Three more left. So remember this is a five ball multiball that guy. So I just have the far left orbit to shoot. Once you do that, super jackpot on the left. You can tell it's the only thing blinking. Stage one. Here we go. Phase one. So this one, bash five or So you have to shoot three drops and then it'll pop up a warp. So another three drops. What's cool is the moment you shoot one, it pops right back up. So do you see how that wall just pops up? You just got a few seconds and then you bash a ward. So one, two, three, and bash award and boom, boom. There we go. Shoot Thoren for super jackpot. That's right up the middle. There we go. And now we're down to stage three. 10 beasts. One, two, six, five, four, three, two, one. And look, we got to I mean, it's a full screen all the movie clips. It's awesome. Shoot Thorin. So look, I can't I got to get between the two. I got to shoot between the two. stage and then we're now at the next stage. So, this is stage four. So, we got to shoot a ramp, which will raise three beasts, and then you got to shoot the beast, and then you got to shoot a ramp. I mean, it's these mini modes are such a blast to play. Um, I think I've only beat this mini mode once. Here we go. There we go. Super jackpot on the right. And then lit shots. So I think this is now is this the end? Complete all shots. Complete all. Then they relight. So this is your victory lap. So let's drain down to one ball. But just such an epic. The modes are so great. And that is the first mini wizard mode done. And guess what? We do it again. So, we've got to collect all the dwarves again, hit my orbits again, do some modes again, get the the smog multiball again, and get the bees frenzy again. It's awesome. It's like, it's so much fun. Let's talk about this outline ball save real quick. I'm going to drain out here. Watch what's going to happen. Look at the screen. Oh, and you have to use the action button to time it right during that blue. If you time it during the blue, it'll kick your ball back out. But I think I mean that's mostly it. Barrels Escape is another epic mini wizard mode and then Battle of PhD RVs when I had it I got to it one time. Uh but the modes are really fun. Uh one thing people don't know is you can change the mode by you hit the left side and then you uh basically every time you hit the left side it'll turn the page but you can use your flipper to change the mode. So you can change through the pages with your flipper to try to get to the right mode that you want. Uh there are some modes that are worth way more points uh but are harder to complete and then other ones that are easier. You can see right here, do you see how that has four stars in the upper right? So that's kind of a harder mode to complete. There's one mode that's one shot, literally one shot. Um yeah, I think that's about it. Um, just very unique modes, very epic mini wizard modes, an incredible multiball with that smog multiball. Uh, there is a mode I've never seen, which is if you do play I don't know if you have to play or complete all 32, I think it's called Darren back again. It's a it's a mode, but it's uh what a marathon to get to that. Um, but I loved this game. I absolutely loved this game. I loved it for how thematic it was, how um just you could play it and experience so many different aspects of the game and the light show was amazing. So for 2014, this game nothing left. I do have nothing left. This game set the bar for a thematic experience and it's just unbelievably good. But hopefully that was helpful. If you next time you see an a hobby, give it a shot, play it. Just remember five quadrants. just focus on one, chip away at it, and try to get yourself to into the fire or try to get yourself deep into that that smog multiball, and you will see some amazing moments. Uh, for sure. But hey, thanks so much for clicking on the video. Uh, check us out every Wednesday from 10:00 to midnight Eastern Standard Time. Check us out live.
