Why, hello there. Welcome to the Punk Rock Pinball Podcast, episode 22. 22. Two-two. We've had a long day. We've had a very, very long day. It is, I don't even know what time it is. It feels later than what it is. I think it's probably like 7. Yeah. It feels like it's 11 p.m. on a Sunday night. Yeah, we started this morning at like 9 a.m. we did a podcast not our own we were on someone else's podcast yeah we were guests on the only three lads podcast it's more of a music podcast it's not a pinball podcast but we talked about pinball we sure did pretty cool podcast they're on spotify and apple and all those uh that's that was 9 a.m yeah thankfully we didn't have to be on video yeah we just ran into the basement studio recorded that it was real fun we did it for over an hour that's about almost an hour and a half and then we realized we had to hit the road for finals b finals for the spooky pinball league not affiliated with spooky pinball right um manufacturing company but just um our friend lily has um the finals for a league that's been going on since i think march once a month we've been meeting. So we had the B finals at Chicago Water and Fire, which is just an incredible collection of games. Absolutely spectacular. Yeah, amazing collection. One of the coolest private collections I've ever seen. Yes. And so we saw a bunch of our friends there today. Ruben from Smoking Popes, he came out we had um just like the the b finals mark the knife mark the knife he wasn't playing in i think mark's in the a finals he probably is microvelli micro may also be in the a finals he's playing the league he's always there he works there okay well yeah he works there he's the tech at chicago water and fire there's got to be almost a million dollars of games in that place it's nuts It's just beautiful. I didn't play particularly well today, but that's okay. Well, I didn't either, but I tied for second going into the Amazing Race finals with Ryan. And then you were the second one out. Yeah. Ruba's the first out. Yeah. You were the second one out. I was the third one out. Yeah. I got taken out on Rush. It was also a small group. It was only six people playing. Yeah, there were six of us. It was fun, though. But we did the playoffs for seeding or whatever were the flip frenzy. I went one and six in those matches. I know I beat you both times. Did we play twice? Yeah, I beat you on Baywatch. Oh, you had that crazy comeback on Baywatch. Yeah, it was awesome. I'd never played it before. I got it in the shark hole. Yeah, it was like, hit the shark hole. so that hit the shark holes 200 million 202 million and then shark hole boom in the bay wash so that and then i pretty much smoked you on medieval madness yeah neither of which were very good scores but mine was 16 million yeah i feel like that ain't that great well for me it was pretty there's a lot better than what i did so i think you did too it was great enough it was great enough i've only played it once before i've played a couple times at troy's at tilt it's fun it's a fun game my take on the on those chicago gaming you got medieval madness you've got your attack from mars you get your cactus canyon you got your monster bash i think those are all four really good but if you have like a pinball collection i think you only need to own one of them yeah i think we have the best one i think cactus canyon is like i like I like the Western theme. I think Cactus Canyon is the best, and the Pinside Top 100 would vehemently disagree. They can suck it. Is that the right grammar there? I don't know. They usually say they vehemently deny that. But I feel like they would disagree with enthusiasm that Cactus Canyon is the best of those four. I'm saying Cactus Canyon is the best game of those four. And you're saying that. I'm saying that, too. Everyone else can go suck it. Yeah. How's that for positive? And they'll say it's because you have that one. It's like, well, if I could sell that one or if you offered me to trade me Attack from Mars or Medieval Madness for Cactus Canyon, I'd say keep it. The only one that's outside of that is Pulp Fiction. I would take Pulp Fiction for Cactus Canyon. I love that game. So the best, I guess we weren't even going to go there, but the best Chicago gaming pinball machine is Pulp Fiction. Yeah, it is. yeah joe and shelly's they've got that one and we've we've offered up cactus canyon in trade for fault and shelly said no shelly said no joseph their son said yes yeah joseph would do it so we gotta wait till joe and shelly are away on vacation surprise joseph knows how to get in the house surprise guys you got a brand new cactus canyon where pulp used to be it looks so good uh-huh what else are we going to talk about today um well see kevin johnson's mad now well because you're like oh you know well well he doesn't like that all right sorry kevin kevin you know what here i'm going to be really confident in this we're going to talk about there is a new pinball machine that got announced this week yeah okay we're going there yeah okay yeah the the beetle juice it looks really cool the beetle juice beetle juice beetle juice it looks beautiful the artwork on it looks awesome i can't wait to play it i'm sure there's going to be somebody around within a couple hours of us that will have it that we'll get to play but it's all sold out so ain't nobody getting it but as albert said you really should play these games if you're a player you should play these games before you purchase i totally agree with albert on this one yeah but that's besides the point i can't wait to play it i think it looks the art looks so cool they really brought it seems like they really brought the movie to life in a great way and the i i mean i i didn't nerd out and watch the whole the whole video but watching i did i know you did i've watched several full videos because i watched the one on the electric bat channel and i can't remember what they call the show where it's kale and the other guy and you asked me last night who that was i told his name and now i'm forgetting it they did like two hours going over all the rules that they know and all the details. Serge. That's the guy's name. Serge. And it's way deep on why he thinks the rules and the code are good and what every shot does. So, yeah. I can't wait to play it. I bet you Pinball on Perry is going to get one. I sure hope so. Are you guys on that list? Yeah. Ryan White, are you watching this still? Is Pinball on Perry getting one? Let's go live stream. Because I have not forgotten that we need to go to Pinball and Perry and live stream from there. And we need to also host a tournament at Pinball and Perry. And it's far from everyone. But you all will go and you're going to love it because it's an incredible collection. Right. Oh, my gosh. Worth the drive. And it's not that far from Indianapolis. It's really close. It's like, what, 30 minutes from Indianapolis? Yeah. So my bells and chimes, lady friends. Let's go meet up. there and it's worth the drive from chicagoland it's worth the drive from central illinois right yes you're thinking of a tv commercial used to watch in milwaukee a freighter like medical yeah freighter medical facility center it's worth the drive from chicago it is and pinball and perry also worth the drive from chicago i would especially once they get beetlejuice i bet they're getting it yeah he has the new alice in wonderland and the dune and i mean everything and ellie's the nicest versions of these and uh he's got a tech our friend ryan goes down meticulously maintained by ryan gorge oh they shoot fabulously yeah so you're tom eaton knows Tom Eaton knows Tom goes there every Saturday or most Saturdays. You're probably going to see a jump cut because the dog was barking out the window. I think we can bring him to podcast filmings at the club because he can behave himself He so cute He cute We got to wait till we get some like window clings so that he can see outside Yeah. He thinks he owns this neighborhood. He doesn't yet. So we're back in. We're back in. Pinball and Perry. We're going to go there. We're going to stream. We're going to host a tournament there. When? I don't know. Probably in a few months. Yeah. Three to six months. Probably after the winter. Maybe after the winter. Maybe after the winter so it's safe to drive. Maybe in the spring. Let's do it in the springtime. I think that's a great idea. And maybe Beetlejuices will be made by the spring. Oh, Lord. Yeah, I want to play it. I do want to, I have to say one thing that made me laugh about this game. This new, brand new feature never been done before. What do they call it? Spooky Speak? Yeah. Yeah. I think it looks really cool. You're just trying to rile me up? Trying to beat you. Yeah, spooky speak, man. I know people are excited about it. You can keep it. I don't want to talk to a pinball machine ever. I do not want to talk to my pinball machine. And for the love of God, I hope there's a way to start the Showtime Multiball without saying that to the machine. Can you hit the action button three times to make it happen? Because I don't want to talk to my freaking pinball machine. at all okay if you're excited about the feature good for you but let me skip that please can i hit the action button to start the deal maybe i sure hope so because i don't want to talk to stupid pinball machine i just want to flip it especially if you're home by yourself or just playing by yourself it's going to be a little weird yeah i just don't want to talk to it and maybe it's real cool the first time but you want to say beetlejuice three times every time you start a Showtime multiball? I don't. We're not on the list for the game, so I guess I don't have to worry about it. No, you don't. That feature is a deterrent to me. It's a negative feature. Well, I can't wait to play it. I'm very excited to play it. Maybe I won't be able to execute the shots to do the Showtime multiball, but if I do, please tell me I can hit the action button to make that start and not to talk to the damn game. I don't want to talk to it. Okay. Yeah. Mike doesn't like to talk to things. No, I like to talk to people. Not to stuff. It's a game. I don't want to talk to the game. The game is not a person. There's not a guy in there. Or a gal. Or anyone. Of any gender. And that's that. And that's that. Don't want to talk to it. Sorry. Okay. Not sorry. You don't have to be sorry. It's totally okay. But I do think, I don't care about that theme really at all. But I do think if I did care about that theme, they really sure did a lot. I think they, I loved that movie when I was younger, when it came out, I loved it. I think they did a really good job. I believe it's going to be super fun. I agree. It's probably going to get old saying Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice. juice i just i'm really curious to see how it works in like a um arcade environment yeah but i'm excited to play it and i think they did a beautiful job and you know what i'm most excited about that means they're working on planet of the apes they probably are working on planet of the apes because once they get these beetle juices built yeah then i'm excited because i think they They kicked ass on the toys and the sculpts and the mechs in the game tying into the theme of the modern pinball machines. We haven't played it, but in terms of how it looks, it looks like probably the best theme integration done in a modern pinball machine. And I don't think there's anything close. Jaws? In terms of what's in there physically. Oh. Yeah, you're probably right about that. What's in there physically, there's way more than Jaws has. There is way more. Now, maybe if Stern would have put the Chum and Brody in there. I got to install him. Like Beetlejuice looks out of the box as Jaws or Godzilla would look if it was fully modded with the best mods. Agree. You look at this Beetlejuice, there's nowhere to put a mod because they are anywhere you'd think to put one, they did it. That's so cool. They already did it. You could get a Jaws to look that way, but you would have to spend $600 in mods to get there. Maybe more. Maybe more. Maybe $1,000. Maybe more. Maybe more. $2,000. Maybe more. I tell you, maybe this isn't an interesting story, but talking about the speaking to things that aren't people. I used to work for Motorola. And the whole, like, you know how you can talk to your phone and say, hey, Google, you know who made that shit up? Motorola made that shit up. Years ago. And Google took that because Google had bought Motorola. And the first phone where you could do that was a Motorola. And I think it might have been the Motorola Atrix. I loved that one. And my stupid freaking phone's talking to me because I said the thing. I don't want to talk to it. But Motorola did that. And I sat outside the offices of the team that was working on it, the marketing managers. And all damn day I'm listening to these guys talk to these phones. And they're all so hyped over this feature on these phones. And this is a company I worked for. I was like invested here. And I'm just thinking, guys, this is the dumbest shit ever. Now look at the world. Now look at the world. Now look at the world. Do you want to walk into this Punk Rock Pinball HQ and you want to say, hey, Google, turn on the pinball machines? I did want to do that. Yeah, you did. But now that I know I can just hit them all on the button on the app, I don't want to say it. I'll just hit the button. Okay. I didn't know that was an option to just click one button and turn all the pinball on. But even when I worked for the company that did it, that pioneered that feature in mobile devices, they were the first. I thought it was stupid. And I still don't like it. There we go. But that excluded, they really put more stuff at least to look at and a few things to hit in that Beetlejuice than you have on like any ultra modern like pinball. I agree. And I don't think it's even close. The next closest is probably Evil Dead. Right? Yeah, probably. Yeah. Yeah, they really jam packed it. Mm hmm. Can't wait to play it. And, man, the artwork is phenomenal. Maybe I got to do this Munsters. Yeah. Christopher Franchi. I don't know him. What a talented dude. Gosh, he's good. Because I think this Munsters art is like maybe one of the best Spike 2, Stern Spike 2 art packages. You know, it's so funny. We were talking last week about how certain artists have a style. and it's funny because we've been fostering our friend Cyclone. And so I've been playing it a lot. Today I was playing Taxi. Have you played it? Just once. Not today, but last time we were up there. It's pretty hilarious and pretty fun. I was playing that and the call-outs, whoever is the voice on it, it's the same voice as Cyclone. And the artwork feels like in the same vein. And I looked and it's the Python Anghelo is the guy. I don't know if he's the voice who did that, but it's funny. I bet if you were really to nerd out and go deep there, similar to the zombie Yeti that we were talking about, like Python Anghelo was that probably that guy in the 80s. Like it is just how it goes. Yeah. Like every artist has like a style. Mm hmm. And even if they have a lot of versatility within that style, like most artists, whether it's music or literature or visual art, most people have like kind of a thumbprint and kind of a style. Or if you mix like a lot of music, I can tell like who I used to be able to tell like who mixed that, what engineer mixed that album just based on hearing like a song. It's like, oh, this is mixed by that guy. and like zombie yeti clearly has a thumbprint and and the guy that did i already forgot his name the guy did cyclone Python Anghelo Python Anghelo and i think Christopher Franchi does have i his stuff has more variance to it but i think he got a thumbprint i just looking across the room at the beetles at the beetles gold and i'm looking at the monsters and thinking about beetle juice and evil dead and like if you looked long enough you could all tell that's all by the same the same guy he's got a vibe i think his vibe's awesome agree like it's because probably my favorite two pinball machines we have in terms of just art package would be beetles and monsters even though the prettiest one overall is probably ripley's avatar yeah ripley's is gorgeous no avatar is probably the prettiest one overall but that's because it's got the rad cow it's shiny and it's got the powder coat it's just shiny and looks fancy it's beautiful yeah no doubt But yeah, I guess our thumbs up on Beetlejuice having not played it. I think it's a little bit of a bummer to me. And I think this was misconstrued. If you post anything remotely negative right now about Beetlejuice, you just get railed. Wow. Because somebody posted in one of the pinball groups, like, games that are of limited production just aren't appealing to me. And maybe he could have worded that better, because they just roasted him. But I get the point. It's hard to get excited about something you may never see. Yeah, because depending on where you live, you might never ever even see it. Mm-hmm. not to mention like for me it's kind of annoying because i'm probably not going to be able to get one or if we do get one it's going to be a year and a half later you know well that's all right or if we get an evil like evil dead still way too much to buy i don't have evil dead money no and like you'd be unless you're super wealthy you're crazy to pay 15k for an evil dead like that's just crazy well a lot of people are collecting them and i bet those collections are incredible yeah i mean if you are wealthy and you've got that kind of dough to just throw around awesome can i come over like they don't have one at chicago on fire do they doesn't have an evil dead there no i was kind of did he have one and move on from it i'm not sure i meant to get one i meant to ask him um but i didn't see one because i i did want to play that today he has other spookies because i played that um alice cooper yeah yeah i played that today how do you know i saw you play it oh yeah it was fun i didn't play it i did terrible i think that's the point the guy was making when he posted it was like he can't get excited because you can't get it and you probably can't even play it depending on where you live like so it's almost sad in a way yeah that you see this new machine and it's so awesome and you may you may never even see it in person so it would be pretty awesome if and that's where i think a lot of people like the sterns because if i want like the walking dead remaster i can call troy and i can get one In a few weeks when they make them like they're going to make them like this month, I think they're making the alleys right now. And I could probably have a pro by early December. If that's what I wanted to do. So you want the stern ones to be good because I can actually get one of those without like. Getting on a list and giving somebody money before I even see the damn thing. Yeah, I mean, like I said, Albert, he is right. Yeah, but that's like on this spooky and probably the next one. Because you just don't know until you play it. And everybody gets super excited about the new machine, whatever it may be. But they are also, you know, everyone plays a little different, has different skill level, and is really looking to get something different out of pinball. Maybe it's just as a casual player. Maybe it's just to have as part of your collection. Maybe it is for competition. yeah but um i don't know we're players yeah and so i need to i need to have it like shoot good yeah and be fun to shoot so we talked about that on the ride home like because as cool as evil dead is and there's so much cool shit in there but if you took evil dead and made it a whitewood and you made all the stern spike twos a whitewood where Where does Evil Dead rank as a Whitewood versus all of the Sterns? I don't know. I don't think it's in the top 10. I don't know. It's not in the top 10. It's gorgeous. It's beautiful, but you take that all away. I know. In just the shots, just the feel and the flow and just the shots without any of the sprinkles. Well, my answer to that is I think the Sterns shoot better. However, Spooky's just starting to catch their stride. They've come a long way. Yeah. And within the walls of Stern is a lot of industry knowledge, like decades of industry knowledge and expertise. And Spooky just doesn't have it. So they've come a long way, baby, in a short amount of time. Yeah. But yeah, I think you're right. like the sterns if you're just going to shoot a blank stern without any artwork on it except for shrek except shrek yeah i'm talking just the stern the stern spike two and up okay all right then spike two and newer like and i'm not knocking evil dead because i want one we will at some point we will own an evil dead i will buy one unless somebody buys one and puts in here that somebody that has money before we do if they buy one and put one in the punk rock pinball hq here then we won't buy one but i'm saying i like evil dead enough we're going to buy it so i'm not knocking evil dead but if you strip it to a whitewood and talk about just the flow and the shots in the feel it is not in the top 10 if you're putting it against every during spike 2 machine it's not close well there you have it folks yeah it says me maybe you disagree i don't care i don't care i don't think it'd be a top 10 it might not be in the top 15 well if you disagree we want to hear about it put it in the comments yeah if you if you disagree like you can respectfully disagree yeah or disrespectfully disagree i don't really care either it's fine i mean every keith ellen game shoots better than than that every john borg yeah they just trick them out those spooky has like they have got the art dialed in which is a huge piece of the experience it's huge that's why i want to buy an evil dead i know it's a huge piece of the experience yeah that's why i know we don't have it on these right here but it's we went on a kick of putting art blades and everything we should probably do that on these it's a huge piece of experience and it's a huge piece where i think i do think at least in the le like stern needs to step it up a little bit compared to what spooky is doing and compared to what barrels of fun is doing if you're looking if you're an le type person i think stern especially You compare like a Stern Ali to Beetlejuice, which is three grand less. And like Beetlejuice has more. It has more. Well, I'm not an Ali buyer, so that's fine. Yeah, we like pros. Yeah. So that's where I love. I wish that Spooky, I hope Spooky has huge success and they can really ramp up their production and they could do a slightly stripped down Beetlejuice that they could more mass produce, I would buy one. We'd be buying one. We would have an Evil Dead today. If Spooky could churn them out like Stern and had one, had slightly fewer bells and whistles for that Stern Pro price point, we would own an Evil Dead right now. Yep. Maybe one day. Maybe one day. What else have we got cooking? we're hosting a tournament here. Soft opening. Real soft opening, because right now it's only our games in here. We have some friends that are bringing some games in. Maybe we'll get them in this week. We need the key fobs. We don't have key fobs yet. I'll call the guy tomorrow. If we can get the key fobs, maybe we'll have some Jeff and CJ games in here by tournament day. But it Saturday the 22nd of November And I going to test out We going to test out the Punk Rock Pinball Points system You heard it here first The PRPPs. Poppers. Punk Rock Pinball Points. You get your PRPPs right here. Uh-huh. And I'm going to do this, and I'm going to say it right now. I'm going to just do it crudely on a spreadsheet. Okay. I'm going to put the – I've calculated I'm going to put the leaderboard on the website. Okay? So if you want to host a punk rock pinball tournament for PRPPs, you can email me and we can do it. And you can format it. You can run a match play. You could do a strike, however you want to do it. Here's how the scoring is going to go. And if you're a hardcore IFPA player, you're going to probably roll your eyes or turn up your nose because this is not what this is for. If you're like hyper competitive, want to know who's the best and we need points based on who you played against and how many meaningful matches. Don't care. Don't care. In the punk rock pinball scoring system, you know, it's going to be if we get 20 people in the tournament and you win. Yeah, you get 20 points. Well, if you're in last place, you get one. OK. Participation trophy. Get a point. Everybody wins. Everybody gets a point or more. And we're not going to keep it to here's your top 15 and all the rest that you did don't count. Your top 15 meaningful matches. Your top 15 meaningful matches that had the most meaningful games played against the most meaningful players. At the most meaningful events. Don't fucking care. If you played in the thing, there's going to be points and those points are going to go to your total for the year, period. sounds simple it's going to be simple it's for fun and so you can have a leaderboard and get your name out there and if you're not as good of a player then i can i am not as good as joe sharp but if i play five times more tournaments than joe i can catch him yeah i just got to play more yeah i'm not going to play five times more than joe because if there's points there he's going to go get them yeah but i can try to play more so can you have a ifp event ifpa event and a punk rock pinball event can that's up to the ifpa you know okay because i'm not going to get because if you want to do a flip frenzy do it i would say i would probably just have a minimum number of rounds you need to play you can't play one round of match play and that's it okay so i gotta put some rules out there for that. I'd say it's like a minimum of five matches. All right. Are there finals? You don't have to have a final. You could do five rounds of match play and those results are your results. You don't need to do a finals after that. I kind of love that because I think the finals are stupid. The finals after a match play tournament are stupid. You're right. I mean, it just seems like everyone just like stroking each other. It's stupid. and if you just i mean i like playing more don't get me wrong it's fun to play more you should just do another tournament well there you go just do another tournament where everybody can play again it just kind of seems dumb now the top half of the field competes we just played for two and a half hours to see who was the best and now we're going to go play each other again to see who's really the best so your two hours of play doesn't really mean shit you can qualify in first and get eighth it's like it's stupid finals are stupid yeah yeah i think so so i would encourage you if you're doing a punk rock pinball one don't have a finals if you're doing match play just do like we're going to do match play for three hours and however many rounds we can get or two hours hour and 45 minutes how many rounds you get at the end of that whoever had the most points based on the match play scoring system, that's who won. That's your winner. We'll do finals at the end of the Punk Rock Pinball season. Yeah, that would be like a tournament. Yeah. And it would be seeded probably based on who's got the points. We'll figure that out. But yeah, to just play in qualifying for however many hours, especially in match play tournaments, match play is not my favorite format anyway I like a strikes tournament where there is no finals you know it's the last person that doesn't have a strike but I think if you're doing a match play tournament per IFPA to get the most points you have to then have a finals which is a pain in the ass because you've got your qualifying rounds and then you've got to go into match play events and create a new tournament the finals for this tournament which is a whole new thing which we'll be doing at poor bros because that's the format which is fine but it's also kind of stupid but i'm still going to play in tournaments that do that and we're going to tournament direct ones yeah for sure i think the bfpa that's i got to do it but i'm saying if you want to just do punk rock pinball you don't have to screw the man screw the man power to the people that don't want to do finals. Yes. Because if you don't do finals, you also could do, if you want to keep it to a certain time frame, you could do more rounds of matches. Yeah. Because the finals take a while, depending on your format and how many players. Yeah. So if you've got eight people, if you've got a big tournament, if you've got 12 in there, that finals takes up time where you could just be doing more rounds that include everybody. I like that. Yeah. Inclusive. Inclusive. okay so are we doing that on saturday sure okay although saturday i kind of want to do strikes can you do that we can do strikes does that work for punk rock pinball points strikes works for punk rock pinball points okay strikes is cool amazing race is cool match play okay flip frenzy Flip Frenzy. These are all good. These are all cool. All right. Yeah. That's what we're doing. Yeah. So soft opening Saturday, six days away. Soft open Saturday. It's an SOS. Yeah, SOS. So if you're in the area, you know where to find us. Yeah, join the Facebook group, Punk Rock Pinball on Facebook. If you do want to come Saturday, we're not putting the address out there yet. So you'll have to message one of us to get that address. Yep. Easiest way is to just join the pinball group and you'll see us as admins on the page. Click us, send a message. I want to come. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, that's it. I think that's it. Well, thank you, everybody, for those who have commented, liked, subscribed, rated, reviewed, all of those wonderful things. I think it's working because we're getting some traction. More people seem to be downloading and listening. So if you haven't taken a second to do that, it would really help us a ton. Yeah, like if you listen on Apple Podcasts, give it a review. five stars if you like if you feel yeah it's five star worthy or even if you think it might be if you listen on spotify give it a review because those bump it up in those algorithms same way if you comment on youtube and you hit the little like button that like helps it get more views yeah but on the podcast side of it like the down the podcast downloads pretty much every episode is like bigger than the last so that's great thank you for watching and listening hopefully you want to maybe set up a punk rock pinball tournament let us fuck the man and fuck the finals yeah fuck them all i'm sorry if there's any children watching it's i think it's labeled as explicit on the podcast app so i think it is and i do say on YouTube like it's not made for kids. I do say that it's not for kids. It's just for, you know, kids can wear the hat. They look cute. Uh huh. They can wear the shirts. This don't have them listen to the podcast. Maybe before you check, because sometimes we swear. Yeah. But yeah, we're tired. It's 37 minute episode. Dog is moaning over here. Dog's moaning. It's probably going to be shorter once we cut out the dog barking. But that's fine. Yeah. All right. Well. Thank you. have a great week everybody and we'll talk to you next week and we'll see some of you Saturday I can't wait toodaloo
