    10:10
has some thoughts on the return of competitive pinball. Let's talk about the great joy that was, for me at least, the return of the pinball NYC season It not often that I experience a sense of awe or wonder at all Mostly when I experience things my takeaways are facts I went to place X I saw person Y we did or talked about Z I'm not saying I don't learn things intellectually or emotionally from those experiences. Of course I do. But if you had asked me what happened on a Monday night in March 2019,
    10:43
I would have simply told you those things with variables X, Y, and Z determined by the league's schedule. Plus, you know, which team won and by how many points and how my individual games had gone. Other just data points. But my experience last Monday night was ineffably different and, in fact, inspired awe. This pandemic, which, let's be clear, isn't over, has taken and continues to take a large toll on many. On me, it has been lesser than on most.
    11:17
I didn't work very much for 18 months, but the expanded social safety nets caught me exactly the way that they were supposed to. I didn't lose anyone very close to me as a direct result of the disease. I don't have the kinds of problems with isolation that others indicated to me that they experienced. Two things. First, being alone isn't that hard for me. I'm an only child. When I was a kid, I had to make my own fun. I played board and card games alone sometimes, which might sound sad to you, but ask another only child if they ever did that, and I bet you see most of us crack a smile.
    11:48
That's actually one of the reasons I like pinball. It's something social that I can do wherein the ostensible focus of my energies is on a solitary pursuit. Plus, also, I am partnered. I am longtime partnered. And so the isolation was not as severe for me as for a lot of people. With all that said, I do want to talk about the Simply Joyful experience that I had on Monday in Park Slope, but I really want to couch it in how my pandemic went. In terms of those data points, I played zero physical pinball for 14 months from March 2020 through my own vaccination.
    12:24
The places that I went other than my apartment were very few, basically grocery and drug stores, occasionally a restaurant for pickup. But more than that, parks. When I saw people at all, we stood or sat around in large circles in parks. There were some video calls for me, but I have a hard time focusing on calls like that if there isn't a goal, as in the case of work meetings. After I got vaccinated, I played some pinball. I'd gone to all the Fifth Avenue Park Slope League venues from High Dive down to Buttermilk at least once between May, two weeks after my second dose, and Monday night.
    13:03
on my way to buttermilk last monday walking through prospect park as i do when i play in the slope i was feeling really emotional and for reasons that i couldn't really put my finger on i was listening to music and there were a few poignant places in songs that had me actually welling up a little bit as i was walking to pinball night like usually i'm walking to pinball night and i'm beaming and i'm excited it's the best night of the week i felt on this monday night as I was in the middle of the park, really emotionally raw,
    13:35
and I was about to walk into a situation unlike any that I had experienced for nearly two years. Our home bar, Buttermilk, is large by a lot of pinball bar standards, but Monday night, when both teams show up full force, it gets crowded. We share the space with the pool league. Add to that, regulars at the bar come for Jeopardy at 7 and then stay for the booze. I actually considered at that moment if I needed to turn around and go home because I wasn't sure I was ready to see that many people at once.
    14:09
I sure as hell wanted to see my teammates and even the opposing team with whom I'm friendly. But seeing up to, you know, 20 to 25 people that I knew at once because, you know, regulars, too, was a daunting proposition. I continued, knowing that my teammates would totally understand and support me if I showed up and subsequently bailed because I didn't feel comfortable. When I finally breached the door around 7, still somewhat nervous but buoyed a bit by the rest of my walk and the accompanying tunes that I was listening to, Lizzo's Cause I Love You, by the way,
    14:43
I don't want to say that the nerves just like straight up all melted away, but among seeing close friends, some of whom I hadn't seen in person at all for the last 18 months, the pinball, and more importantly than anything else, the normalcy of it all overcame any trepidation I had. As the evening went on, I had the distinct pleasure of running into members of six of the teams in our 10-team division. Let me make this clear. Six teams in our division were scheduled to be in the neighborhood,
    15:15
but only five of them showed up. The sixth team that I saw that night played in Manhattan and then came to Skylark, where we will play them tomorrow night. Obviously, I was going to see us Colliders and the team that we played against, the lesser players, add by the way to the joy that our match ended in a tiebreaker with this team a different version of this team and we Colliders played to tiebreakers twice in one season before We'll see this team again in Week 10 at Pioneers, so maybe that'll happen again.
    15:46
That would be super exciting. In addition to those two teams, though, the Deluxe Horses, a brand new team in the league playing out of Greenpoint Beer and Ale, won by forfeit in their first week, as I'm sure Eric has probably already told you, and they were scheduled to play at Commonwealth, and After the bartender there informed them that they had won, they came down the avenue to Buttermilk and played some in-between-our-league games. It was super cool to play a tiebreaker with the new team there, too, so that we could help the captains see how that might play out if they run into it in the future.
    16:20
I dug the deluxe horses, we chatted a bunch. Then, after our match was over, a couple other colliders and I played another game or two and then headed down the avenue to Skylark. Of course, when we got there, we ran into members of Special When Lit and the Pin Pals who had just completed a match, which I'm sure, again, Eric probably told you how it ended. Seeing those friends on those two teams, though, many of whom I hadn't seen at all since March 2020, was, again, an overwhelmingly beautiful experience.
    16:50
I wrapped up in bear hugs a couple of friends whom I'd missed sorely and hoped to see again very soon. To be clear, there was mutual consent for those hugs, by the way. That's one thing that we should take away from this pandemic. Let's all be aware of each other's boundaries. Of course, as so often happens after a match, members of Special When Lit then headed to Buttermilk, while we Colliders, who played at Buttermilk, stayed at Skylark. And there, we were soon greeted by members of Tilty Pleasures,
    17:21
formerly of Owl Farm and High Dive, but playing out of Skylark this season. They wrapped up their match at McKenna's in Manhattan and then headed back to their home venue and got some Mandalorian in. After that ecstatic Monday night, I just want to add one more thing to what happened in my pinball week. Although Monday night was the feature and what I told Eric I wanted to talk about, it also happened that I went to Skylark to practice a bit on Friday evening. And I saw another close friend who isn't playing in the team league this season.
    17:53
I caught up with them, and it was incredible to have that kind of happenstance too. Now, all of that might sound like what I said before. I went to X, Park Slope. I saw Y, the pinball teams. We did Z, played pinball. But the way it felt from inside of it was overwhelmingly joyful. To be in the places that I love so well, to see the community that I've missed so much, was just so fucking beautiful, I don't even know what else to say about it.
    18:24
So let me say this, pinfolk. Without realizing quite the size of the hole in my life that was left by social distancing and pandemic life, I have missed you all terribly. At the beginning of the pandemic, there was a lot of talk about when we'd get back to normal. I count myself among the wise folks who said, let's not pretend normal will be the same. Let's start defining the new normal. And I continue to feel that way. For reference, see any trite description of the Chinese lettering that means both crisis and opportunity. That feeling of normalcy on Monday night, though, it felt revolutionary.
    18:58
It felt empowering. It felt like a new normal where I don't take for granted that I'll see my friends again soon. I'm at a loss to describe the depth of the ecstasy that I felt that night. So welcome back, pinfolk. I hope that last Monday night or Tuesday night or whenever you return to competitive pinball, if you have yet, had that indescribable kind of joy in it for you that it did for me. If you haven't been ready to come back yet, I get it.
    19:31
As I said earlier, I feared even on the way to the match that I wasn't ready. I learned just how ready I was by 8.15 that night. I'm not trying to say that you will if you come back. that's got to be a personal decision no matter where you fall on that spectrum I look forward to seeing you on location soon that's all for this week's pod I'm Eric Sweetland my initials are HIP and I write an occasional blog post at noonewancetotalkaboutcompetitivepinball.com
