TL;DR

Grazley Garage restoration progress: Barracora playfield swap complete, rare Radical & Whirlwind in queue, flipper size myth tested.

Summary

Mike Dus visits Grazley Garage to check on restoration projects in progress. Kevin shows off a completed Barracora playfield swap with fresh cosmetics and polishing, a rare Bally Radical arcade machine from Shane Jackson awaiting cabinet restoration, and a Whirlwind Total Chaos undergoing work. Dutch has acquired a Big Indian electromechanical machine. The team plays Barracora and Donkey Kong Junior arcade, and conducts a detailed measurement comparison of lightning flippers vs. standard flippers on a Barracora machine, finding only ~1/16" difference.

I'm Mike Dus and this is Pinball Shenanigans. Hi doggies. Oh [ __ ] What's up, boys? Yo, back at the Grazley garage. It's been a couple weeks since I've been here. Been in Iceland doing Icelandic things. It was good times. Are the puppies happy to see me? No, they're busy playing with their balls. Nice shirt, by the way. I like that. Thanks. So, what do you kids have been up to since I've been gone? Oh, I just remembered. Let's tell Dutch what you just did. He just bought a new pinball machine. He just closed a deal for one. Yes, he did. I did. Yeah. You guys are going to Windsor tonight after your schooling is done. And your favorite game? Guess what game it is? It's one of your favorite of all time. No. [ __ ] Even older. Yeah. Little older. Little older. What? Like older? Like one of my more previous favorite games? Yeah. Very very previous. Yes. Very very very very Previous or Yeah. Previous previous and older in year jokers. Keep on going. Keep going. Keep going. Uh, back to the early Dutch pinball history. Are we sure it's not the Adams Family? I remember really liking that game a long time ago. Unfortunately, I may not like this game. You may hate it with all of your guts. Ghostbusters. No. Still older. Still older. Think electromechanical. Big Indian. Yes, you're going to get a Big Indian. Okay, you really threw me off of my favorite. I don't Yeah, we were kind of I don't like the game. I like the game. Slightly sarcastic. I don't like the machine. I have beef with the machine. I like the game. Right. Yeah. Yeah. It was your first pinball restoration experience and didn't go well. Barn $400. It hadn't worked in 30 years. Yeah. So, it's not the game itself. It's it was that one that specific copy. So there's the good news for you. Why are we going to get a big Indian? Well, you know, sometimes a deal falls in your lap and you kind of just got to jump on it. So that was a good price. So all right, so that's uh that's happening. Good. More things. Oo, it is toasty out here. Wow. I'm not used to this coming from Iceland, man. I was wearing four layers of freaking hoods. Okay. Whoa. What is going on here? Is this license plate thing all new? Oh, yeah. That's as well. I just I don't remember seeing that before. That's cool. Yeah, they were just lying around. So, okay, that's a good use for them. So, I know you said that you were starting potentially a few restorations at once, and this looks like evidence of that. Part of some. Okay. Um Okay. Where are we going first? Where are you leading me? Wherever you want. Okay. Right here. Whirlwind. Okay. So, this is the whirlwind u total chaos. Yeah, this I still got to take the head apart. Is it totally chaotic in the uh Oh, yeah. condition. Oh, cool stuff going on. Oh, wow. What is that? There's a giant hole. Okay. Hold cut in there. Oh, and this too. Yeah. Wow. That's uh something I haven't seen before. No. Someone really wanted to protect those quarters. I guess installing some sort of heavy duty locking system. I guess there is this This plate was Oh, that was part of it, too. That was on the inside. Oh, yeah. Okay. Wow. They really were protecting this thing. This was on the inside. This was on the outside. Oh, wow. Somehow that's heavy duty. Yeah. Okay. Well, this machine was well secured, but Okay. So, that's underway. There's the head. Oh, yeah. Right. It's the whole fast board set we were checking out last time we were here. Pretty cool. Pretty cool. Okay, so next in the mix I see over here. This is pretty sweet. This is pretty sweet. This is a Bali Radical. And this is Shane Jackson's. And it's a pretty rare game. They only made like around 1311, I think. Yeah. I was hoping you were going to be able to help with all the facts. Who designed this again? Is this uh Langa? Dan Langlo or something. Yeah. Or however you pronounce it. Langu. Stephen Lang Langa. I think I thought that's how it's pronounced. I don't know how to pronounce it. But he he did like you know what else? He did a game that you owned. Big Indian. Big Indian. No, he did uh like Strange Science and uh Yeah, that makes sense. I think some of those B other Ballet 682 games in the Lost World or something. Yes, actually I think you're right on that. Uh I forget the other ones, but uh what's that one? It was like a prototype game. Not maybe was it Truck Stop? No, not Wrecking Ball. What was Truck Stop before it was Truck Stop? So, this came from Shane. Actually, it originally came from uh Neon Pinball Ranch out in uh Vancouver Island, BC. This was a Carrie Hills machine. Shane bought it off of her and uh so you're restoring this and uh it came to you complete like everything is here. Did you get to play it? Uh I did. It's uh very rough. Yeah. Oh yeah. Okay. Needs needs some love. It someone has done a amateur restoration. I I don't know if you can actually see it. Well, I do see some blue corners here that definitely or the entire thing has been hand painted. Oh, okay. Yep. That blue does definitely not match this blue. Oh, and the back. Okay. So, it has been previously restored. Yeah. Um custom plastics on the playfield. Yeah. Oh, is there? We'll have to check that out. Like, oh, yeah. Here everywhere. Oh, wow. Check out Alvar, though. That's Well, I was going to get to that. That is really cool. I love how you find little Easter eggs like this. Just Bali Williams would use random bits of wood they had in the shop. That confuses me cuz Elvire is only like what, two years old at the time this game was made. Uh, well, that would make sense cuz it would be still kicking around in the factory potentially then, right? the leftover pieces, I guess. So, cool little Easter egg there. Uh, not cool on the previous restoration, but I guess we have to presume that it looks better after what they did than what it did. Otherwise, they wouldn't have done it. What I'm wondering is where' the bottom speaker went? There was none in here. No bottom speaker. Oh, okay. Wire no wires and no cabinet speaker. The grill's still there. Oh, really? Oh, okay. So, it was kind of missing uh some sound then. Yeah, very much so. But yeah, rare game. I don't know really of any of these that are in Ontario other than this one. I don't think I've ever come across one. So, pretty cool opportunity to restore and hopefully play this when it is all said and done. But yeah, super rare. I mean, like quick silver, they made like 1,200 of those, so it's about equally rare. That's pretty sweet. And uh whirlwind parts. I just got all whirlwind stuff. Okay. And some more whirlwind parts over here. It looks like And then uh this is radical stuff. Okay. This is the radical playfield. Let's have a look at that. I Where did I play a Radical? I played one. Neon Ranch. I don't know if I did at Neon Ranch, but it was many years ago somewhere, maybe in a tournament. And that's like one of the only times I ever seen this game. So, what is going on here? It looks like touch-ups there. Looks like maybe there was a Myar thing around there. Yeah, there's lots of There's some touch-ups. Touch-ups. It's pretty worn out, actually. Or definitely around here, it's gotten very dirty and lifty and Oh, yeah. It's lifty. when ramps are cracked and broken. Oh, yeah. Like this is just somebody threw that plastic. Well, that's the handmade. There's a They're missing a rail back here. So, it it'll just it'll get caught behind the stamp target. Oh, I see some wear there, too. So, what's the plans for the playfield? I think Shane's putting a new one in. Oh, that's right. Okay, that sounds familiar. So, he's going to take care of all the playfield stuff. You're just doing all the cabinet stuff. Yep. Are you supposed to get this thing 100% working? Is that or part of the program or you're not sure? Or I think as far as I know, I'm just doing play uh cabinet stuff. Okay. Well, it's pretty cool looking game. I like the uh I like the pink slingshot reverse too work. Yeah. Okay. Well, I'm excited to give this a go once it's ready. Mhm. Uh Okay. So, also in the mix, we've got Barraora Playfield swap on this guy. Let's have a look at how it turned out. It turned out beautiful. I'm just waiting for new pop umber caps, new lane guides, cuz these are once upon a time were red. They've turned to orange. Oh, yeah. I haven't seen them fade quite like that before. I got to go. You taking off? Okay. All right. See you, Dutch. Bye, everyone. Get your studies done so you can get that big Indian. Uh, yeah. This thing looks beautiful. All the new rubbers, the new plastics, the nicely polished metals everywhere. So, did this pose any problems for you? Was it all pretty straightforward? I know how much you love doing playfield swaps. It was okay. I like the art on this game. Um, so this was supposed to be called at one point Las Vegas and then they changed it to like it was going to be like L A S V E G- A. Then they changed it to like Jet Orbit and they're like we don't like that. Then they were going to do Barracuda, but apparently they didn't like that. So, it finally became Barracora. And the artist Doug Watson borrowed from uh or was inspired by the uh artist Eugene Geer, I guess. And this is very similar to like a Geiger painting or something that he did. It's a fish lady. Nice. And because it's not a human, you can get away with painting naked fish ladies on the playfield. So, got to like that. Some more naked fish ladies up here. But this game was designed by Roger Sharp, Steve Epstein, and Barry Oursler. So, it's kind of unique that three different people get credit for designing a pinball machine. Oh, yeah. This is looking good with all the LEDs. Sean Bennish is going to be stoked about this. Did you send them photos? Uh, not yet. Okay. But, uh, yeah, like it it was pretty rusty. I couldn't even get the, uh, lights out of the head. Oh, really? They were like welded and rusted into the sockets. Oh, wow. So, I had to like dremel the [ __ ] out of all those. Yeah. Yeah. You addressed literally every like square millimeter of metal it looks like. Yeah. Polished rails and ball guides. Um but yeah, so it's pretty cool. Roger Sharp and Steve Epstein uh is literally credited with this machine and this machine only. And Roger and Steve actually created the IFPA. So some fun history on this machine. And here's what the before looked like. So, as you can see, it's a significant improvement. That'll make a good wall hanger, though. Yeah, this is Yeah, look at that. That's some pretty good wear and tear. It's It's nice that uh was it CPR that made that? Yeah, it's nice that that that they made that available. Oh, I really like the uh coin inserts. That's cool. Um, but I'm assuming this thing is playable, huh? As far as I know. Yes. Yeah. Okay. Well, shall we give her a go? Sure. Okay. We may need credit. It don't work. Oh, let's see if I can add a credit. Oh, okay. There's a bell. That's weird though. It said one credit available. Maybe I didn't press the button hard enough cuz I just realized it kind of goes in quite a bit. Oh, lightning flippers. Interesting. Yeah, he wanted those put on. Okay. He uh had a lightning flippers on his Capcom brake shot, too, that ended up at Fork River at one point in time. I came from him. Okay, let's give her a go here. So, the goal of the game is to uh spell bar or Aora in order. And whoa, it is on wheels. I just realized that. And uh that will light your lock. I literally spelled nothing. Let's uh try and play better. I was listening to a podcast yesterday and they were talking about the difference between lightning flippers and real flippers or regular flippers. Mhm. And they're saying it's like almost in uh like can barely even tell you the two right beside each other. And it's like a millimeter difference. And you know I always thought it was a quarter inch difference to have like a quarter and a quarter maybe a/2 in difference. An eighth and eighth. But apparently we'll have to test that out. There we go. Apparently, lightning clippers are just like that much smaller. And everybody's all like in a tizzy about lightning clippers in tournaments. So, I'd like to test that theory at one point. Okay, so I did lock my ball. And what did you do? I'm broken, man. I'm sorry. Oh, it looks like two player. I might have started a two-player game. Yeah, there's only one credit left. Okay, we're playing a two-player game. Definitely uh going to play the lightning flippers for my performance thus far. See lightning flippers. Okay, let's try and spell. See, the thing is you have to hit them in actual order or else they pop back up really So, this is uh player two. Okay, here we go. So yeah, if I don't hit the R up top, is it B where you hit the B first or is it double R? Uh cuz on the right side you got to start with A. Okay, so it is the B on the bottom. Just need the A. No, don't do it. That was just a warning. One more drop. There we go. So, yeah, the Accora likes the lock on the top. The bar likes the lock over there. So, this is uh got to have some good strong flickers to make it all the way around to that top block. Try and get some bar in the process. It's a pretty unique rule set. There's all kinds of more rules. It's like, two lane changers up top. So, it's like the left flipper changes the four, five, six, and the right flipper changes the 1, two, three. Then you got two bonus sets of bonus multipliers. Hey, first spinner shot. I'm going to use both flippers when doing a lane change up top. Okay, let me try and actually get this ball. Oh, get in there. You can get a two or three ball multiball. I'm pretty sure I know the tournament strategy is to lock a ball up top. There you go. Beautiful. And then uh I can play with this ball like in perpetuity. When I drain, it'll just kick out that ball from the top. So this is a tournament strategy. But uh I believe where do I start the multiball? Is it the saucer? Maybe there's like different settings going on here. So maybe I need to spell. I don't know the game all that well. Does that multi go? No. Pretty sure you can do a two or three multiball. Those are some fun sound effects. Uhoh. Nope. Machine's getting a little excited. Well, that sounds like your uh standard Williams sound effect there. Like a fire power kind of sound. All right, there we go. Let's lock this ball. So now the spinner lives where it doesn't. or Oh, come on. There we go. Three ball multiball. Forget if the playfield the play field multiplier during multiballing. Try and lift the spinners. Hey, the spinner went off. Why did it go off? Just hit it. Oh, you only get like one rip at it like quick silver and then you got to relight it. Oh, there it is. Reitlight it. Oh, I missed the bottom lane. I'm sure there's a way to get the two ball multiball, but like I said, I miss the game. Well, I got uh bonus collect lit in the top lock spot. That'll be fun to try and get. So, how do I get the two multiol? How's your arms doing? Yeah, I had a lot of quick falls and then this one here. Oh, extra ball was flashing there, but not for long. I almost got the bonus ladder all the way to the top. So, I'm at 987. I got a little bell for that. I'll just plunge out player one. Finish off three. We'll do one handed on uh player one. See how long I can last the last uh the last lane change. Don't forget. Almost got a horror spell. Paracore is getting excited. Oh, just missed it. Okay, now I got to treat try and beat player two with one. Oh, that's the end of that. Okay, why not? Here we go. I'll just finish off uh player two one hit. We don't need a half hour gameplay video to get a feel for it. Got to figure out how to start that two ball multi. Was that a tilt? All right. Well, there's some paracore for you. Looking amazing and playing beautiful. And I'm back. All right. Did you skip out on class? Okay. Well, there you have it. We got some whirlwind total chaos. We got some radical. We got some barra. Do you want to show us how it's done on Donkey Kong Junior? Okay. Okay. Cuz uh in the last video we didn't do so hot. And uh I have a feeling it's unlocked, right? Dutch can uh maybe do a little better. All right. Check it out. You got the arcade lineup here. Got the arcade lineup over there. Looks like you're tearing apart Flintstones as well. You've been working on this? Uh just a little bit. I can't really go that far without parts. Oh, yeah. That's kind of a thing. New ramps for Whirlwind. Total Chaos. That's a couple of shackles there. New shooter housing. That's actually pretty cool. It's like the cloud. Oh, is it? Yeah. Let's see. I was curious myself, so I checked it out. Oh, that's cute. Look at that. Kmer being cooler. It looks like he's blowing kisses. like a very subtle wisp. All right, this is about to be the most embarrassing thing. I'm actually going to do pretty decently. I can't tell. Yeah, we'll find out shortly. You can't do any worse than uh Jay the neighbor did. What did he Oh, yeah. He just walked off the side. He I think he thought he was Mario on the top and was trying to move, right? He's like, "What? I was looking at Mario." Oh, yeah. That would probably do it. You got to Vjust it down a little bit, I think. Oh, okay. It's like really green in the black. Yeah, it does kind of look green, especially through the camera. But here we go. They made this for Atari 2600. It was the red cartridge. I have regular DK. Oh, [ __ ] I forgot you can't just slide right off that. That's stupid. And I This is a bad example. They I think they also made it in just your standard KCO style cartridge for 2600, but then they made it for Atari 7800 and the uh graphics were way better. Unfortunately, no one owned a 7800. Yeah, I think everybody blew all their money on the 2600. Here we go. Here's the thing, though, is that like the 7,800 could play 2600 games. Yeah, totally. But the 7,800 died and the 2600 kept going cuz the controllers were so awful. Oh, yeah. They were horrible. Not reliably, like unreliable. Felt like crap. Horribly nonergonomic. Yep. That just were like just weird shape. Like your 2600 controllers. It came standard with like a full key like a full 12 button keypad and then like five buttons on top of it. Like the 2600 had a button. Yeah, literally one button. And the games are not that much more complicated, I think. I know. I never bought one, so I couldn't tell you. Yeah, I had one and uh played the living daylights out of the 7,800. I was I was actually one who uh enjoyed it quite a bit. There we go. Look at this. So, you rescued daddy. Yeah. I don't know. They get get punted here. Oh, that's no way to treat your kids. No, that's Mario. Oh, who's daddy? Donkey Kong. Okay. And I'm Donkey Kong Junior. You're a junior. So Mario's the bad guy. Mario's the bad guy. Oh, to date, this is the only game where Mario is the bad guy. Oh, okay. Fun fact for you. Yeah, I didn't really realize that. He's the one shooting out all these enemies at you. Yeah. I'll see if I can try to get to the secret layer. Oh yeah, that's like level eight, I think. Really hard to get to. Secret layer. I don't even remember that. There's some classic tunes there for you. Hey, listen to this. He's doing a little better than me and Jay the neighbor did. This song's sick. Do you put this on your uh iPod? Yeah, this is my this is my gym music. God damn it. I can't get the super jump. I forget the timing. There we go. Ah, look at that secret move. Can bypass. It's not It's not secret. It's actually over here. Oh, non-secret move. The instructions are right on the panel. Look at that. [Music] Yeah, these are almost as good as the crickets on Frontier. These tunes are these um What kind of birds are these? I uh evil ones. Yeah, we got the purple wings dropping eggs on you. Ah, yes. Mario's got all kinds of tricks up his sleeve. [Music] Nice. All right. There's a really good chance I don't beat this next level cuz it is [ __ ] ridiculous. All right. Sorry. Am I allowed to swear I forget? Yeah, you're allowed. All right, we're good. This level's ridiculous. This level is ridiculous. Well, look at this. Yeah, there's a And here's the best part is those birds can now fly at the very bottom. So, I'm not safe anywhere. Okay, so he's busted out the little alligators and the birds simultaneously. Hey, I basically This is like the same soundtrack as Popeye, isn't it? Uh, something close. They came out the same year. Huh. [Music] It's a very precarious level for sure. Yeah, like I have to just do so much waiting. Well, I hope you have this tune on your iPod as well. Nah, I'm not really a big fan of this one. For the record, when I say it, I'm lucky if I beat this. I've beaten this level like five times, maybe. Really, it's so hard. So, this is a rare occasion here. Might just be able to pull it off. Boom. All right, one more first level and then I'm at the secret layer. Secret layer. New tunes. New tunes. Oh, yeah. That reminds me, me and my cousin when we were younger, we uh pulled all of like we somehow made like a a mixed um mix tape or something tape of all the Atari cool Atari music. That was probably Atari 2600. That's probably the Oh god. Oops. You got like Wow. Yeah, I forgot. In every direction there. Yeah, the red guys go back up. The blue guys drop off again. I think it was on like a a CD. We burned all the coolest Atari 2600 tunes and made an Atari mixtape. That sounds awful. Atari 2600. I bet you I still have it somewhere. I It does not have good music, brother. That's just a fact. Uh, no, but it's epic nonetheless. I got to go dig and see if I can find that. Uh, I pulled over. I I I hit right. I last chance. I actually want to get to this. This is a rarity if we can actually get to this the layer. Pitfall one and two some of the greatest soundtracks. Pitfall 2 especially. Yeah. Isn't that like t like the best 2600 game? Uh I wouldn't be surprised. [Music] Uh com um Kaboom is another Oh, I know that one favorite. I played a lot of Kaboom. [Music] Got it. All right. All right. Look at this cut scene. Okay. All right. I might not get very far because this level's very hard. Okay. So, is this the secret thing? Yeah. Hideout. To Mario's hideout. Check out this music. Whoa. Can you burn me a copy of that for my CD player in my car? I actually legit have a CD player in my car still. I still have a CD player in my car. Yeah, this level's very hard. I've never even seen this level. Oh, it's over. Oh, at least we got there. And look, you put in your highest score to date. Yeah, I didn't really show it off, but like there's like the red fire dudes that run around the platforms, and then there's these sparks that come down from the top that can jump between platforms. Okay. Like at random. You definitely uh did a little better than than we did. So, well, good demo. Considering what you guys told me, I wouldn't be surprised. Yeah, I lasted like about 5 seconds. So, anyway, that's about it. Is that what Jamie would say? Oh, snap. Here we go. We're going to put the flipper sizes to the test here live to see the difference between lightning flippers and regular flippers and see if they are really that significant. Okay, ready? Here we go. Look at that. It is man, hardly significant. I mean, the the the word on the street is that it's an eighth inch on each side and that makes a you know, a/4 inch bigger gap, but I don't know about that. That is uh pretty insignificant. So, there you have it. Right. We're going to really put this theory to the test here and see the actual measurement. Kevin busted out his fancy vereri micrometer. Is that what it's called? No, it's called a verier. Verier or as we call it from Bama. A very near very near. Let's measure this once and for all and put this myth to the test here. All right. What do we got? Let's zoom in here. So, what is that? 2.9 in. Yeah. Okay. 2.9 in for regular size flippers and 2.85 in. So it's 50 difference. So what does that equate to in terms of it's like 116th? A little bit less. We'll have to do some math, but really 16th is a 62. That's 50. Okay. Wow. So, so it's Yeah, close to 16. Close to a 16th. So, yeah, maybe like an 8 eighth of an inch uh bigger gap. So, there you have it. It's not like an inch difference. I'm recording myself. Bye, doggies. Thanks for the visit. We'll see you next time. Hey, don't look at me like that. There you go. There he's not looking at you.
