TL;DR

RetroRalph reviews the premium OSSC video upscaler for retro consoles, praising its image quality despite high cost.

Summary

RetroRalph reviews the OSSC (Open Source Scan Converter), an expensive video upscaling device that converts 240p retro console signals to higher resolutions for modern HDTVs. He demonstrates its capabilities with a Neo Geo Consolized MVS system, comparing the visual quality to budget alternatives like Hyperkin cables and discussing the trade-offs between cost and image fidelity.

Key Claims

  • The OSSC produces visually superior output compared to budget alternatives like Hyperkin cables ($30 vs $200+)

high confidence · Direct comparison made during gameplay demonstrations; speaker emphasizes visual quality difference justifies price premium

  • OSSC 2x line conversion produces negligible input lag that players would not notice in normal play

medium confidence · Speaker states 'you don't notice any input lag there, a very small amount but nothing that you would ever notice'

  • The OSSC has multiple scaling options (2x, 3x, 4x, 5x) with 5x resolution unable to be captured via Elgato capture card

high confidence · Speaker explicitly states capture card limitation prevents showing 5x output

  • The Neo Geo Consolized MVS unit functions as both a consolized system and a super gun for testing JAMMA arcade boards

high confidence · Speaker describes dual functionality with switch mechanism to toggle between MVS and JAMMA modes

  • RetroRalph sold multiple Arcade1Up cabinet modifications to afford the Neo Geo Consolized MVS

high confidence · Direct statement: 'I actually sold a couple of my Arcade1Up cabinet modifications that I did to be able to afford this'

Notable Quotes

  • “This almost looks, it doesn't almost, it looks better than the original experience ever looked for me.”

Hello my friends, and welcome back to another episode of Lifestyles of the Rich in Retro. Is your current retro console experiencing input lag or ugly deinterlacing artifacts? Well, we don't have time for that after all. We're rich! My console would laugh at a thing like that. Why would we ever play retro games with inferior technologies, hook them up through two dollar buck chuck interfaces that we bought on Amazon for ridiculously discounted prices? No, that's not what we would do, my friend. After all, like I said, we're rich, so we use the most expensive connectivity methods to make sure we rid our lives of deinterlacing artifacts. We turn our voice into leprechauns instead of a British man, and we put an end to crappy, low-resolution images. So in this episode, let's explore the possibilities, because after all, like I said, we're rich! Hey guys, welcome back. So obviously I'm kind of joking around about this lifestyle is a rich and retro thing, but there are certain products that I've held off on buying just because they are really expensive and you almost would think you have to be rich to buy them. So anyways, one of those products is the OSSC. So it's an open source line doubler. So effectively, you know, basic 101 is it takes a 240p signal and doubles the line. So you end up with a 480p signal from a legacy console, like something retro, like a Dreamcast or Genesis or Neo Geo, whatever it is that you have. right and so it's kind of interesting because I really didn't want to like the product because of the sheer cost of it actually sold some things in order to get this because I just I couldn't justify just buying it out right and so I did that I got rid of some things I didn't really care about and I gotta say I actually really like it I didn't want to like it especially when there's products like this I almost felt like it was irresponsible to like it because there are products like you know the hyperkin cable for the HD or the HD cable for the Dreamcast, the Hyperkin cable for the Sega Genesis, and these are like $30, and they hook up to your HDTV, so it provides, you know, the ability to play these consoles in a modern TV, but, and you know, it's decent. I'm not a super, like, crazy elitist, you know, guy about the resolution of the image, but I kind of didn't think I was until I saw this. It just looks so damn good. If you already own, like, let's say a Mega SG, then you've probably already seen what a Genesis can look like when it's pristine. But here's the thing, guys. This is legitimately my opinion, so take it for what it's worth. But when I hooked these retro consoles up to my TV as a kid, they didn't look anywhere near the way they look with this. This almost looks, it doesn't almost, it looks better than the original experience ever looked for me. So it does kind of open this debate of what really is retro. But anyways, so it looks freaking awesome, it looks amazing, it looks killer on an HDTV, but this doesn only double the lines So keep in mind the 2x line conversion is pretty much lag free You don notice any input lag there a very small amount but it nothing that you would ever i mean unless you're i don't know i just don't think you'd ever notice it there's 3x 4x and 5x obviously you can get up to crazy resolutions with it the only bummer is that the elgato capture card won't capture it at 5x so the highest i can get this thing to go up to show you is gonna be 3x but it looks really good and i'll uh turn scan lines on and off and stuff like that i'm not I'm not gonna do a comparison video because there's just so many out there. I just kind of wanted you guys to see what this thing can look like. But there's one thing that's really cool. So the system I'm gonna use, this is so neat. I wasn't even gonna do this, but it came today in the mail. I was on a work trip and it came and it was sitting on my doorstep and I was so freaking excited it's not even funny. So I'm gonna go get it really quick. I'm gonna show it to you and then we'll jump over to the computer. Okay, so the system we're gonna be using is a Neo Geo Consolized MVS. This is a splurge item for me, no doubt, but I actually sold a couple of my arcade one-up cabinets modifications that I did to be able to afford this. This thing is sick. And the other cool thing is I'm using a traditional SNK Neo Geo CD controller. So I don't know if you can hear that, but it's got the clickies. I love this. This is something that everyone complained about that they didn't have in the Neo Geo Mini. It would have been a nice touch to put this the Neo Geo Mini as the controller and even maybe on the onboard one but they didn't choose to do that. So in another episode we're gonna review this. I'm just gonna use this to hook it up to the OSSC and we'll play a couple Neo Geo games and I'll show you you know with it turn scan lines turn on turn off and all that stuff. So this is really cool I will tell you one more cool thing about this. So obviously I had to make this arcade specific there was no way I was gonna do this without bringing arcades into the element somehow but this board does both JAMMA and Neo Geo so there's a connector that you're not seeing here where I can hook up any JAMMA board to this and use this Neo Geo controller so if I buy some JAMMA boards or have some JAMMA boards laying around and I want to test them you can test them with this so those are called super guns so typically a super gun is sold separately from this unit it's not usually two units in one but this was super unique because not only is it a consolized MVS but it's also a super gun so like I said you can there's a little switch on the side you can press it to go from JAMA to MVS mode and you can hook up any arcade board you want to it super cool because I'm gonna definitely leverage this because I don't really have a really easy way to test arcade boards I usually throw them in an arcade cabinet so this is super cool but anyways let's jump over to the PC and we can see what the OSSC is all about. All right, guys, we're over on the PC. We are going to do Metal Slug 4 first. Let's get over there and give it a shot. Now, this is without scanlines. Keep in mind, we're playing on original hardware, which is pretty damn true. Mission 1, start. I always felt like the sound of this game was just like outrageously loud. It almost feels like I turned up too high but it's alright, I lowered it a little bit here. There we go. So guys I think it looks freaking spectacular I mean, it looks so good. I don't know. You guys tell me, but I think it just looks amazing. So I'm going to stop this right here, and I'll put on some scan lines in a minute. I'm going to try the helicopter first. All right. Alright, so I'm gonna reset at this point and we'll restart this level but with scanlines turned on. Now there's a bunch of tuning parameters for scanlines, I'm just gonna do basic scanlines and see what you guys think. Okay, we are back and we have the scanlines turned on. I decided to go with an actual more aggressive scanline because I thought it looked cooler. So I'll show you guys what that looks like now. I think it looks really neat with the scanlines on. I do notice you can really fine tune this thing. I don't claim to be an expert. Honestly, you'd almost have to be a video engineer to understand all of the settings of this device. So I've just now started to do some research on the device because, honestly, it's got so many different settings. But anyways, I just put on scan lines. I kind of made them a little bit thicker. And honestly, it's a little subjective because different CRTs look slightly different as far as the dramatic nature of the scan line. so you can kind of play with it and get it where you like it, but I thought this looked really cool. So anyways, I feel like this is probably some of the best scan lines I've ever seen on a device. It's funny, this game had so much slowdown back in the day. Obviously, it's running on the same hardware as it was in the arcade, so you get the same amount of slowdown. But I think it looks awesome, guys. I'd be interested to see what you guys think. All right, the next game we're going to check out is... I always get this wrong. I think it's Sengoku. Sengoku. I think that's how you say it. But if that's not how you say it, oh well. All right. This game always looked good in the arcade. So I don't have scan lines on. You'll see what it looks like here in a minute. The only thing I didn't like about this game is it gets a little monotonous over time. But cool music. so it looks good right um i'm gonna put it on with uh scan lines i'm actually not gonna exit the game i'm gonna actually let these guys beat up on me for a minute and then we're gonna turn on scanlines, you guys can see the difference between that. So that's the really thick scanlines, then it goes thinner, and then nothing. So I'll leave it right there. Alright, so now Alright, so now I got the scan lines on, you guys can take a look at this, but it does darken the image a bit, and I'm sure you can correct that in the software if you feel like it. I had a hard time with this controller because I usually play this with arcade sticks. So I getting used to it Alright that Joe There we go Usually you can do forward and he dashes Okay It's a lot easier with the joint controller. Yeah, you go forward-forward and he does that little dash move. Anyway, so... I don't know guys, I mean you be the judge, but I think it looks really, really nice. Clearly, this is an item that if you're really into retro games you might want to own. It's just, you know, there's a cost involved with it, so you've just got to be okay with the cost. Alright, I'm going to shut the scan lines off. You'll see the brightness come back a little bit. Okay, there. Now we've got no scan lines. This looks freaking amazing. all right it's final thoughts time so what did i think of this thing let me uh take a drag off my pipe real quick i don't even know is that that whatever anyway so it's expensive it is so it actually belongs on lifestyles of the rich and retro so in this in this sort of series i am going to feature products that are really expensive and they're not going to be for everyone i had to sell a bunch of stuff to get it. So I'm just saying, if you have money burning a hole in your pocket and you have to have your retro console look the best it possibly can on your HDTV, it's a great option. There are other ones, but if you're not as anal, then there are a bunch of more budget-friendly solutions for you. I featured one the other day, the Hyperkin cable for the Sega Genesis. It looks good, just doesn't look anywhere near the quality of this. So it just depends on where you're at. That's kind of it. It's like a matter of preference more than anything else. If you did have multiple consoles to hook up, this OSSC is pretty cool because it has not only SCART input, but it also has the component inputs. You could have those both running, you know, at the same time and you can jump from one to the other, or you would need some sort of switch mechanism if you're going to hook up more consoles to it. So anyways, I really like it. But you know, again, if you were like a Sega Genesis only kind of collector or gamer, then maybe you just get a Mega Sg and call it done you know so there's a million and one solutions I just wanted to show you guys this I think it's really cool and um yeah it it was one of those things I didn't want to like it and I do and I am not going to sit you sit here and tell you I understand what it deinterlacing artifacts are and all that stuff I'd be bsing you if I did it's basically just do I think it looks good or or not and I think it looks really good it looks really good right it's exceptionally good in comparison to some of the things I've seen so while I think and I am satisfied with the Hyperkin cable for the Genesis. After I saw this, I was like, oh, well, now I understand the difference between a $30 solution and like a $200 plus solution. So anyways, guys, that was it.
