At 4 a.m. on Sunday morning, a Topps tourney concluded at Jack Bar on Iron Maiden. Player AEC took first place, and player TDR took second and third place, sharing in a prize pool of somewhere north of $261. This week, operator Al Seahack announced a Topps tournament on the machine 24 at Coyote Club, running for 29 days with a $100 starting pot. Looking ahead to this week's NYC pinball calendar On Monday and Tuesday, pinball NYC teams will be traveling all over the place On Wednesday, September 29th, Jack Bar Presents Wednesday Night Strikes 7 will be held This two-strike affair begins at 8 p.m. sharp with a $6 entry fee And on Sunday, October 3rd, at 2 p.m., the Stern Army Sunday match play at Jack Bar will be held at the conclusion of the mandalorian launch party at jack bar this sunday i had the chance to catch up briefly with a participant and talk about personal growth in pinball here's that conversation the stern army and jack bar presents mandalorian launch party flip frenzy has just concluded at Jack Bar, and I'm here with Ida Kreitzer. Ida, how was your afternoon? It was absolutely great. I had a really good experience. It's my second Flipper Frenzy, and at the first one that I played, I was only playing for two months, so I had not a great experience, but it was awesome. I think I won six games out of probably 12. I beat a personal high score on a machine, and I had a really fun time. That's really great. Did you get to play Mandalorian today? I did. It was my first game and I lost. Yeah, that's how it goes, doesn't it? Yeah, it does. Yeah. We were just talking before I started recording about the levels of pinball, what the difference is when you're playing now versus, say, your first flip frenzy. Maybe we could recreate some of the comments you had from there. Yeah, absolutely. So I think when I started playing, I was immediately in a group of players who were very experienced and that was a really good thing. It was a little intimidating of course but it was also great because everyone was really welcoming and happy to teach me and to answer questions But in the beginning I had no idea how deep the machines are and how many levels there are to pinball. So at some point you realize that all machines are different not just in builds but also in story, that there are things called modes and how you do with them. And I started reading up, I watched videos, I'm big on pinball rule sheets, I love them, I think they're really interesting, and I've learned to ask very specific questions, because if you ask three people how to play a machine, you will get three different answers, and they might all be correct, but it's also a very personal game. And it's also the question, do you want to have a really good score, or do you want do well in a tournament. Also slightly different. And then at some point, the third thing comes into play and that are the skills. And I've been playing the last six months really a lot just to gain experience and to figure the machines out. At some point I got tired of not knowing how all of them work and of not knowing how to get good scores in tournaments. And it's been a really interesting journey. My stance is different. I move a lot more on the the machine. I learned to smack a machine. I tilted for the first time in a tournament the other day, which was kind of exhilarating. And it's a very, actually, physical sport. And it's also kind of like chess, which I love. So it's really fucking awesome. That is really cool to hear. I like hearing about your journey into pinball that I'm sure a lot of us can relate to, thank you, as we're all going through it. So thank you, Ida, for your perspective on the day. That's all for this week's pod. I'm Eric Sweetland. My initials are HIP, and I write an occasional blog post at NoOneWantsToTalkAboutCompetitivePinball.com. I made this podcast with the help of Ida Kreitzer, Benjamin Fioriga and Lauren Berner Lawrence and hopefully a growing number of you in the NYC pinball community please send me your competition results questions comments observations beefs or calendar invitations to your pinball events to nycpinpod at gmail.com like the podcast on social media at nycpinpod on next week's podcast I'll run down this week's local competition results and hopefully more between now and then eschew needlessly gendered bathrooms, and happy flipping.
