MY name's Jeff. I'm the audio director. I do the sound design and a bunch of other bits and bobs with the game audio-wise. So, what makes Bon Jovi pinball unique?
0:11
Yeah.

You've got the giant Bon Jovi heart and dagger. It acts as both a magnet grab. It is an elevator. It has ramps that allow it to get to three different stages of diverter like height. You can shoot through it. It also reveals a giant pit underneath it, which is used for many modes. It acts as transportation to get the ball around as well as being a shoot through the heart joke.

There's the Steel Horse three-ball lock, which is a three-ball lock that has a buck that shoots to a nice wireform that holds the balls in the center of the playfield. When you hit to release them, they dump onto the playfield in a really cool moment. Crowd amp loop-to-loop shot is another really defining feature of the game. [music] It is a captive ball that shoots into a spinner, which then has a wireform that orbits around vertically to allow the ball to land back at the captive ball. It's [music] It's super neat. It's very satisfying to hit. It has a cool sound. And when you hit enough spins, it builds up what is the next neat feature, which is the crowd surf outlane flipper save. I love skill-based ball saves, and this is a mini flipper in an outlane. I mean, it's What? When you build up enough spins in the loop-to-loop, when you drain out the left outlane, it will hear a cue an audio cue and a flash to let you know that you have a moment to use the left flipper to fire the ball back through a gate and get it back into play. Backstage access or VIP area is an area of the playfield that has a magnet next to three stand-ups. You fire the ball with a mini upper flipper, it goes through a spinner, and then it gets grabbed there and then pulled into one of the other physical ball locks of the game. Bon Jovi stage sign is right above that. It's a giant text that says Bon Jovi LED lit. Every switch hit in the game will help build those letters spelling Bon Jovi over and over again, which gives you a huge bonus ramp at the end of the game. The game's filled with spotlights and trusses to help give the excitement and feeling of being at a concert. The apron has faders and a VU meter that moves while you play, and there's the iconic New Jersey Bon Jovi guitar. The game also has lightning flippers, which I'm so glad are back. Bram Stoker's Dracula had lightning flippers, probably one of my favorite games. They're a little shorter than regular ones and they're way snappier. This game is absolutely fast. It also has drop targets that pop up in the outer orbits, very similar to Raven, a game that you may or may not have heard of on this channel. And of course, my favorite part of the upgrade for this game is the new audio package. And I'm talking hardware. We've got a new amp, we've got new speakers, we have a new sub, and there's a new cabinet sub box, which helps redirect the pressure of the game to pull in and out from the air around the cabinet instead of from inside of it. This is very important for making sure that low frequencies are represented accurately, and it decreases the pressure waves inside of the game, which means less cabinet rattle among other things. They should not have given me a new upgraded audio package. I am I'm taking full advantage of this. So, let's talk about the audio package itself. I wanted to do a number of cool and creative things with this because since I'm not doing music for the game, that frees me up to really focus on trying to innovate in other ways. This game has a few things that I'm very proud of, one of which is the crowd engine. So, it's very simple, but as you hit more switches and combos in succession, it helps build the ambient crowd in the game. There are separate audio buses that bring an interactive crowd to it as you perform well. It's very noticeable during multi-balls, and it's also very more noticeable if you're playing well, like Carl. Not like me. So, I wanted as you perform well for the crowd to really kind of help hype you up. The sound effects that trigger from many of the components in it, I'm talking crowd surf when you hit the captive ball, getting into the VIP, spelling love letters, all of these things have musical cue sound effects associated with them that match the key of the song that you are playing. So, as you play different songs, all of the sounds will change to fit that actual song. And for songs that have changing keys in the middle of the song, Eric wrote a system that allows the samples to swap in middle of the song based on chapter markers that we added. So, when you switch keys in the middle of a song, the sounds you are now triggering continue to match that key. Something [music] else I'm very proud of with the audio package is that all of the cheers, all of the like guitar moments and things that you're hearing in the game are 100% from Bon Jovi concerts. We were able to get hours, and I'm talking hours and hours of footage of Bon Jovi, which I combed through and pulled out call outs from Bon Jovi himself.

    [music]

Crowd screams, crowd loops, solo guitar performances to use to blend with my own sound design to create really cool like mode [music] shots, jackpot sounds. The solo guitar moments that we use to create these all these performances [music] come directly from the performances of the songs from these live concerts. So, not only that, there's two characters in the game, Tommy and Gina, from the song that will help navigate you through the game both with call outs that you expect from a pinball machine, including jackpots, shot call outs, all the stuff you would expect, plus a narrative between them that is you explore while you play the game. It's their experience at a concert. You'll deal with stuff like a smoker bugging you. You'll have love song moments, all sorts of interactions between them. But, it wouldn't be a Barrels of Fun game without options. And if you're someone who just wants to experience the music, you can set the call outs to be completely off. Or, if you just want Bon Jovi call outs to give kind of theme immersion without being too obtrusive, you can just have Bon Jovi. And if you want the full Tommy and Gina experience, you can set it to Tommy and Gina and have all the call outs that you would expect, including shot call outs. We're also giving you the power to EQ your game for your room yourself. I have taken the time to use sweeps, both noise sweeps, tone sweeps, a huge array of tests with my microphones to create a profile that makes the sound system sound as amazing as it can be as a baseline. But, if you'd like to increase the bass, the treble, and adjust it to fit your room the way you like it, that's available now, too. So, I just want to thank everybody on the team again. This is Barrel's first music pin and how we feel a crowd concert experience should be, and I hope you get to try it because it's a super amazing game. Thanks for listening. I appreciate it. If you enjoyed this video, please it's obviously not monetized cuz there's Bon Jovi music through the whole thing.
