TL;DR

James Bond 007 Pinball tutorial showcasing extensive post-launch code improvements and deep, multi-layered gameplay.

Summary

Joel Engleworth provides an extensive tutorial on James Bond 007 Pinball by Stern, explaining that the game has been significantly improved through post-launch code updates and is now 'fleshed out' with extensive modes and gameplay depth. He covers the playfield layout (including aftermarket mods on this particular unit), skill shots, six villain modes tied to Bond films, henchmen modes, bond girl multipliers, multiball modes (jetpack and bird one), Q branch modes, and the path to wizard modes. The game rewards diverse playstyles and offers exceptional depth despite initially launching with shallow code.

Key Claims

  • James Bond 007 Pinball had shallow code at launch but Stern has since finished/completed the code making it deeply fleshed out

high confidence · Joel states: 'when the game came out, it was met with mixed reviews and that was due to the code. The code was very shallow, but they have finished the code and this game is so fleshed out.'

  • The game includes six villain modes corresponding to six different Bond films (Goldfinger, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, and two others)

high confidence · Joel explicitly names villain modes and their film associations during playfield explanation

  • The ultimate wizard mode is titled 'Her Majesty's Secret Service' and requires completing all villain, henchmen, weapon, and Q branch modes

high confidence · Joel states: 'If you happen to do all of those things in one game, you qualify the ultimate wizard mode of the game, Her Majesty's Secret Service.'

  • Bond women playfield multiplier can reach 7x scoring when all bond girls are qualified and lit

high confidence · Joel demonstrates achieving 7x multiplier and hitting jackpots in the 56-70 million range during the stream

  • The Pro model lacks the moving Bond toy and physical ball lock compared to Premium and LE variants

high confidence · Joel states: 'The Pro does not have the moving bond. Um, and it doesn't have the physical ball lock up here, but um, besides that, pretty much the same game.'

Hello, my name is Joel Engleworth and this is the Flipping Out YouTube channel. Thanks so much for clicking on the video. Um, today's going to be a fun one. Today we're doing a tutorial on James Bond 007 by Stern Pinball. Uh, this game came out a few years ago, George Gomez design. Um, when the game came out, it it it was met with mixed reviews and that was due to the code. The code was very shallow, but they have finished the code and this game is so fleshed out. There's so much in this game now. My brother and I, we streamed it originally when the game was released and we basically played everything we could in the game and we're like, "Okay." But now that the game is so fleshed out, there are so many modes, there are so many things to do. And uh Jared and I actually streamed this last Wednesday and had an absolute blast with this game. So, you know, huge props for Stern for fleshing out this game and making this game incredible. So, for all the people that committed early and bought the game, I bet you love it now. This game's awesome. And um yeah, this game came in on trade. This was a limited edition. This is limited edition 527 out of a thousand. Uh this game came in on trade, so Zach picked it up. Um so, yeah. So, all those bond lovers out there, hopefully you can uh find a limited edition used or um reach out to somebody and try to get one new. I think Zach may even have some in stock. Um, but this game's awesome. This game is awesome and um, I'm excited to show what I can to you. Uh, this is one of those games though that I had to study. I had to really learn. There is so much in this game that I really had to focus to try to understand what every single thing is. Um, and there's no way I can show it all. There's just too much in the game to show you in a video. It would be an hour plus long video easily. Um, so yeah, but let's start with uh what I normally start with, which is uh shots and layout. Right off the bat, this game came in on trade, so there are some mods. There are some mods in this game that make it different than the than the the normal game. I'm pretty sure this sculpt and this sculpt have been replaced with um some different sculpts. Um and then you'll notice the flippers. These are called precision flippers. Um that's an aftermarket mod uh that are they make them. They're metal and uh they do shoot a little different. I enjoy the way they shoot. Um, but that is not standard. But the main difference is this guy right here. This vertical upkick. This thing normally the default or the normal way is this thing. When you shoot it into here, it'll it'll launch it that way. So, it would always shoot the ball that way, kind of put it into danger. Um, there are some people that didn't like that. So, this is an aftermarket mod where it actually it's a vertical upkick now and will shoot the ball right here into the left uh wire form and and make it a much safer shot. So, this is not standard. That's all I can say. It's not standard, but um you know, props to the person who made the mod because it fits in really well. Um now, let's talk about what is actually in the game. Uh in llane, outlane, nothing crazy there. Um there's an outlane ball save, nothing physical. Yeah, nothing crazy there. There is an uppost here that'll stop the ball to start modes or show different animations and whatnot. This area over here is you can see underwater here. You can see James Bond uh underwater there in the swamp or the swamp area, the underwater area. But um you you will basically hit the ball here. You'll maybe want to hold up the flipper, shoot the ball in there, and then like I said, normally it it launches that way, but with this mod, it's going to go up into the vertical upkick. You have a left orbit. I say orbit. Um, it doesn't typically go anywhere near the orbit. It's a it's a ramp. It actually goes up and then it feeds up here for the jetpack or we'll come all the way over around uh to the left flipper. So, there's a Bond on a wand. There's Bond right here with a magnet. Um, so for jetack multiball, you'll see you'll have to hit this shot and uh James Bond will grab it and then he'll swing out and you'll try to drop the ball right here on top of that tank target. Um, the dragon, I think is what it's called. the Dragon Tank. Uh, this is an opto spinner. That thing spins a lot and it's awesome. It's a great It's a great spinner. Then you got the rocket. So, the rocket's back here and we have some unique stuff. In front of it, there are three drop targets. So, we're going to have to hit those to light locks and multiball. There's also a shot that you can feed up through um with without touching the drop targets. So, when the drop targets are down, you know, you can shoot into this many different ways. When it's up, you can only shoot up that side. And then around that around on the inside there is the spectre targets. You'll actually see on the backboard here, you can spell spectre based off of hitting all the targets inside of this area inside of that area. So, there's a lot going on there. Then we have the middle right up the middle shot. The right up the middle shot will normally just swing down to the left, but when the lock is lit, there's a diverter that will kick out and when you hit up the middle, it'll actually lock the ball up here in that uh rocket multiball. um area is what's going on there. There's the uh dragon target there and then there's actually a target on top and the only way to hit that target on top is with bond. Um there's a little alleyway right here. It is possible to shoot the ball up between uh this kind of upper loop area and back up here into the pops. There's some pops back here as well as those rollover lanes. Um and then we have this upper loot area, the the Bond women loop. So, this is something that you can repeat over and over again if you really want to. Uh, fun shot, fast shot. Um, but yeah, that's up there in that area. And then we have this ramp. So, it's actually a twoin one ramp um from the upper flipper. The henchman ramp will cause it to go this way and then feed down to the right side. And then later on, we have the villain ramp which goes here and also feeds it down to the right side. So, two different ways that you can enter enter that ramp. And then between that ramp though, this is the right orbit. I drew that wrong. The right orbit right here that would go all the way around. So, another tight shot right in there, which is going to be needed for different modes and different aspects of the game. And then there's actually the little target here. I think it's called the goldfinger target. I think that's what it's called. The but it's more like the weapons target. Um, sitting right there. It's bars of gold. And then under the what is it? DB5. The DB5 the car. There is actually a really nice scoop. Um, you can hit the scoop underneath there and then there's a vertical upkick and it will eject the ball like you're being ejected out of a car uh onto this right wire form. So, actually very unique layout, very unique layout. Uh, George Gomez typically does two flipper games. This is a three flipper game and it's uh it's really actually a very fun layout to shoot. Very unique. The plunge is is basically you can um you can short plunge uh and and get up here or you can hold the button down and go all the way around. So nothing crazy with the plunge. But um yeah, let's go ahead and talk about the modes, the rules, the modes. All right, where to start? Where to start? Want to complete the spectre? We have bird one jackpot. Okay, we have the villain modes right here. You can see them. There are six. One, two, three, four, five, six. And they correspond to the six different movies that are in the uh so yellow, red, gold member, uh Thunderball, Green, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever. So all the movies are right here down the middle. But we got the seven villains that way. We have six weapons, not weapons. We have um what are these? Yeah, the secret weapon start modes. Those are in the middle here. Those are those six there. Then you have the six henchmen modes which are there off of that side target. Then you have the six bond women up here that are going to be that inner loop. So those are all different things you can look at and what you want to focus on where you want to start with. So let's actually uh let's talk about a skill shot. If you do nothing, if you do nothing and just plunge the ball, your skill shots are to drop it through the lane. Uh you get certain points if you do it without having to flip the flippers. If you flip the flippers, you can change the light. So, that's one option. Or you can I think it's you drop it, it feeds down here, and then you're going to want to go that way. That's why that's flashing purple. Pretty sure that's a skill shot. Otherwise, if you push and hold the flipper button, do you see now how that's lit? That's lit, that's lit, and that's lit. So, if you did a short plunge and then hit that, that would be one option. If you go all the way around and hit that, that would be an option. If you go all the way around and do that, that would be an option. So, different skill shots give you different uh awards or whatever. Look real quick on the screen. And that's all the different modes. There's so many different things. There's so many different things to do in this game. Um, so what I will do is I'm actually going to let it go all the way around and I'm going to act like I fl hit a villain target. But not only will I get my skill shot, but it's also going to start a villain mode. So, let's go ahead and do that. So, it's not time. There we go. So, I just I not only got my skill shot, but I also started a villain mode. Gold finger. Um, Goldfinger. You're going to see I have gold targets now around the playfield. So, there's one there. There's one up in here. There's um there's one up here. So, basically, you're just hitting gold targets as I totally miss. There we go. And you can see every mode there's a progress bar going on. So, there we go. I I got to I got to throw it hard enough to get all the way around. There we go. So, you see how I'm slowly working through the modes and then to relight the shots, I have to hit the gold member target. So, this is this is the gold member mode. Mr. Okay, I actually got it in the swamp. So, this is where normally it would kick out. One thing that that does by hitting it into the swamp is it actually qualifies my jetpack multiball. I don't want to start that yet. I'll try not to just cuz I'd like to keep things separate for you guys. So, I'm going to ignore that yellow shot over there. There we go. Um, let me relight these shots. So, let's just go through this mode. Once again, we're looking here. And then another thing I want to show off is right here, smart missiles. So, I can just hit the button. It'll use one of my smart missiles and it finish the mode for me. So, that mode is totally done. So, I'm done with a villain mode. So, I'm back out into nothing. There's nothing going on. Um, so if I hit the right ramp right now, I would start another villain mode. If I hit the left uh the the left ramp, that inner ramp, I would start a henchman mode. But what I want to show off is I actually want to show off multiball. What I did was to qualify this jetpack multiball, you have to get in the swamp one time and then all I have to do is hit this left orbit. So, let me go ahead and do that. I got to actually throw this shot kind of hard. Get it up there. There we go. So, look, the ball's being grabbed. Got to kick out another ball. So, the ball's on Bond and I want to hit that middle target when Bond is right over top of that tank. Um, in this multiball, basically I'm hitting silver shots. So, this is a two ball multiball. So, let me uh drain that by not catching it. And once you hit once you've hit enough, there we go. Once you hit enough, I'm literally throwing a ball around. Now, the left side, left side is lit for super jackpot. There we go. Or double jackpot. So, that's basically this multiball. Two ball multiball. You're going to work your way around. And uh I dropped it right on the plastic protector. That's not normal. Uh let's get another super jackpot here. Oh, that's right. So, I need to actually drop it on um on that target. And the way you do that is you try to you try to do it while you try to hit the target while it's over top of that. And I'm in a three ball multiball. So, this is a multiball that you can absolutely bring into a mode. That's obviously what I would suggest. But that is the jetpack multiball. That's how you do that on the left. Let's go ahead and show how you do the bird one multiball. So, to do that, you basically have to hit down Oh, okay. So, what happened is I had spelled Spectre and I hit that gold member target. So, by doing that, I've actually started one of these weapon modes. So, they're real quick kind of quick hurry up modes. But by doing that, by doing that hurry up mode, I actually get a perk. So, you're going to see here timers extended. That's the perk I got for that. Um, I will tell you one of my switches in the Spectre switches is it's it's I'm getting credit for them when I probably shouldn't is what I'm saying. So, normally you have to throw the ball back there and let it bounce around and that's how you spell the different Spectre letters. So, I just spelled Spectre again. So, by spelling spectre, um, now if I hit this target again, I will start another uh, weapon mode. So, death by Jerby. So, another hurry up mode. There we go. Got it. So, that's my second uh weapon mode there. And it will give me another perk. So, what do I get? Mystery rewards upgraded. Cool. Uh extra balls lit over here on the scoop. So, might as well take it. Okay. When that pops out, let's focus on the bird one multiball. Bird one multiball is all about hitting down the three green uh drop targets. So, let me do that. two. So, there's another one and another one. Once you've hit all three, if you look now, lock is lit. So, I want to hit right up the middle. And that ball's going to get physically locked up there at the top. So, basically what you would want to do, skill shots are lit again. So, we can plunge all the way around and shoot for a skill shot. Um, certain skill shots will give you other smart missiles. So, I have three smart missiles right now. Okay, let's go ahead and lock another ball. There we go. This light's flashing, showing that I could start another weapons mode. Uh, actually, no, I'd have to spell Spectre. I need one more E for Spectre. Let's go ahead and go ahead and lock the the third ball. There we go. So, there we go. Bird one multiball. Ben [music] in this multiball you want to hit green shots. So three ball multiball um bond spelling bond by the way is how you how you get your uh mystery rewards or work towards high stake. So let's just keep hitting our green shots. That green shot lid again. Over there. Go over there. Go up there. Oh, do one of these. Okay. One thing that I've done by hitting that middle loop, let me show you that. Man, this this shot is really easy to hit with a flipper, but I am struggling to throw the ball. There we go. All the way around. So, there we go. We got double jackpot. So, just work your way through green shots. If you look that light solid, and that's because I hit that little that mini loop. What's going on with the Bond women is the pond women get qualified when you do certain things. So, I'll tell you right now, Kissy, one of them that I don't have qualified, this green one right here, for me to qualify that, I have to get more hits to the rocket. If I hit enough hits to the rocket, I'll qualify her. So, let me keep hitting her. qualified yet. We'll get there. That might not maybe I can't qualify during multiball. So, we'll we'll drive that back down on multiball. But once you qualify all those things and if you look on Stern's website will explain everything what each individual character is. Uh, one of the characters deals with uh, you know, right orbit shots, getting enough of those right orbit shot, one deals with getting enough Q shots. Uh, one deals with enough pop bumper hits. So, being that I've qualified four of them and I've now lit all four of them, uh, what that means is I could start a 4x Bond girl multi multiplier right now. So, if I lit my button um, pink, that would start that multiball multiplier. So, I'm down to one ball. So, let's see what else I can qualify. Honey Rider. I don't remember exactly what I do with this to qualify her. Um, and then I actually don't I I would need to look online. I'm sorry. Super spinner. Let me uh I'm just going to ignore them for a second and assume I will qualify them uh as we go cuz Kissy I know deals with the rocket. Honey Rider, I don't really remember. Let's go ahead and do a henchman mode. So, all you got to do is go right up the middle. So, I've started Fiona. So, it looks like I need to go with the orange shot over there. There we go. Nope. I just don't want to drain cuz here's the deal. I've being that I've qualified the Bond women and then I've shot the inner loop by shooting the inner loop. That means I have them ready to go. All I have to do is hit my button to start them. if I drain now that they're qualified. If I drain, uh, I lose them. I lose the ones that I've qualified. So, you don't want to do that. You definitely don't want to drain while you have all those qualified. Let's keep work. Oh, I thought I was about to drain. Let's keep working our way through this. And then it looks like just follow the arrows. Okay. So, that's one of the that's one of those modes done. So, I have now gotten to the uh double or Bond James Bond. Bon James Bond, which is a mini wizard mode. Um, let's go ahead and start one of those. Actually, have something screaming over here, too. I think either one will start it, but I'm going to start it here. So, the reason I have Bond James Bond qualified is because I've done bird one multiball, the rocket multiball. I've done the jetpack multiball. I've done one henchman mode, and I've done one villain mode. Once you've done one of all four of those things, it'll it'll qualify this uh mini wizard mode. When you're in this mini wizard mode, you want to hit these shots. You know, nothing nothing too crazy here. There we go. Get over here. Remember this a multiball. And once I've filled up, you see the bar here in the middle. Once I fill that up, there you go. I'm filling up that blue bar, there we go. Oh, they didn't catch it. They missed the opto. There we go. I admire your luck, Mr. And that's uh Oh, it killed my flippers. So, I'll get down to one. So, cool little mini wizard mode once you've done one of each things. So, um Oh, I need to read both of them. So, villain, henchmen, bird one, and uh jetpack. And now we're back out. I've got more villain modes I can play. I've got more weapon modes I can play. I've got more henchmen modes I can play. And then if I really want to do the thing, if I really want to stack it up for all the points, what you really want to do is you want to get all the Bond women qualified and um and then start 7x scoring in a multiball. That is that is the path that you want to take. Oh, one thing I haven't shown is the Q the Q branch the Q branch things. So, these are qualified when you um these modes are qualified based on additional things that you do within the play field. So, hitting a certain number of pop bumpers, hitting a certain number of orbits or spinners or stuff like that. So, here are additional modes in perks. So, you got the PQ modes, villain modes, weapon modes, henchmen modes, and uh the playfield multipliers. So, in this one, power pack, you got to hit in here. All right. Got to do it again. If you hit the the white shots, the white shots uh increase the value. So you see next shot 2500 or 2,500. Now it's 3,500. So you can increase by hitting these white shots. You can increase the value. There we go. There we go. So, I'm increasing the value and then checking out. Come on. There's a lot of film clips in this. A lot. So, let's go ahead and finish it with just one more. You can see once again the progress bar is very helpful. Then I think it starts uh there we go. So, I got everything power pack. Yes. So, a lot of these Q branch modes are actually mini little mini multiballs. Good. So, let's go ahead and uh hit the orange shots when I'm in this multiball. Ah, there we go. And then So, you can do this. I think it's same thing. You got to hit hit orange shots to progress through the mode. There we go. And then boom, over here. And I think that is me beating the mode. Yep. Flippers die and I'm out of that mode. So, that was one of the Q branch modes. So, I feel like I might be rambling a little bit, but it's there's just so many things you can do and you're always one step away from whatever the next thing is. Okay, so I figured it out. Honey Rider to get her, it's 25 pop bumper hits. The next one in uh she is three right orbit shots. Then we have uh [ __ ] Galore. It would be five DB8 ejects. Then, uh Domino is four left ejects. Then Kissy, who I don't have qualified, is 10 hits to the rocket. And Tiffany Casease, the blue one, is 200 spinner rips. So, all I have to do to to get Kissy qualified here is I need to get her um I need to get these rocket hits. So, let's see if I can There we go. There she is. Now she's qualified. Now that she's qualified, I would want to hit this inner orbit to make her solid. Make There it is. So now that she's qualified, all I have to do is hit the the the the pink button here and I would have 7x play. That is this is where all the points are. So in a perfect world, you'd start that and then you'd get into a multi that's you would get into a multiball. So I think I'm actually close to I'm losing all my time. There we go. Yeah, perfect. Jetpack multiball while in 7x scoring. So, what you should see is these points should really blow up. Um, 28 million point jackpot for that. Let's just hit our hit our shots here and you're going to see I broke a billion the other day and it was because I did this 7x playfield plus a multiball. How much is this super jackpot? Double jackpot 56 million. Now, it's a risk reward reward factor though. You got to qualify all the Bond women, but then you also you have to qual 70 million point jackpot. Yeah, you got to qualify all the Bond women and not drain while while you have them activated. So, qualify them all, hit seven inner loops, and then and then activate it before you drain. It's uh not particularly easy to do, but obviously there are a ton of points sitting there. So, yeah, we can show whatever we want next. I mean, I've hit enough Spectre targets where I can do another a weapon mode. So, that's going to start a a weapon mode now. Extra ball is lit. Mhm. Mhm. Show me the weapon mode. Deadly dagger. Let's see if I can do it in time. Did it 140 million points. It said 7x multiplier is still going on. What does deadly dagger give me? It gives me horrible woman. It's going to tell me. Yes. It's going to give me tell me tell me tell ball saver extenders. So I am 19 seconds still on this 7x mode. So let's do another villain mode here. So orange shots for this villain mode. But these shots are all going to be worth stupid points cuz I got that 7x multiplier going. Um, but yeah, I mean that's basically like there's a lot going on. I hope I wasn't rambling too much, but there's a ton of film clips here. There's a ton of stuff to do. What I would encourage you to do, though, is to um let me go ahead and do this. Hop on. There you go. I'm going to go and reset. Okay. What I would encourage you to do now that I've shown all of that is pick either henchmen or villains. Say, I'm gonna play this game for villains. So, plunge the ball, shoot up into a villain mode, get into a villain mode. Once you're in a villain mode, hit the scoop over here to qualify jetpack. One shot to the left, you're in jetack multiball. So, you can work through that villain mode while in jetpack multiball and complete it. As soon as you get out of that villain mode, get into another villain mode because once you get through all six villain modes, there's a mini wizard mode qualified right there. And there are actually challenge modes in this game. So, if I look here, if you go to challenge, you see these chaos at Crab Key, Ahoy, Mr. Bond. I'm looking right here. Uh, Goldfingers Jackpot, and Duel on the Disco Volante. Volante. Those are all mini wizard modes associated. You can pick them. You can pick them based on once you've played all the villain modes, mini wizard mode. Once you've played all the henchmen, mini wizard mode. Once you've played all the weapons, mini wizard mode. Once you've played played all the Q branches, mini wizard mode. If you happen to do all of those things in one game, you qualify the ultimate wizard mode of the game, Her Majesty's Secret Service. Um, if you're never going to get that far, what's cool is the fact that they've put these in challenge modes. So you can play them, you can see those modes without actually getting to it in the game. Um, but yeah, it's kind of a pick your path. Focus on villains, focus on henchmen, but there's also perks to doing both multiballs, doing one henchman, doing one villain. You do that, that's how you qualify the the Bond James Bond mode. Um, so much strategy to this game. And then once you add in the Bond women playfield multiplier at the top of 7x, things get real can get real spicy. you can get like, "Holy cow, do I want to use this 3x multiplier right now, or do I want to keep building? Do I want to keep adding bond women and try to get all the way to that 7x multiplier where things just get crazy um with points?" And then if you stack that into a multiple, it's insane. So, uh, if you're a Bond fan, there's so many movie clips in this game. There's so many different iconic scenes in this game. You're really going to enjoy that. If you're not a Bond fan and you're just a pinball fan, I also think you're going to enjoy this game because the layout is unique. There's so many different ways to attack it with all the different modes and the way you play it. You can play a whole game focusing on the villains end and be like, you know what, next game I just want to focus on henchmen or next game, you know what, I just want to focus on spelling spectre and get my go work my way through all the secret weapons or focus on the Q modes. There's so many different things you can do in this game, which it's really it's really a joy to play. Um, so yeah, go find yourself a Bond. Uh, if this is the pre this would be the LE, the premium would have the same layout. The Pro does not have the moving bond. Um, and it doesn't have the physical ball lock up here, but um, besides that, pretty much the same game. Very, very similar. Uh, when you when you actually play the game and experience the game. Um, I think the only other thing I'd mentioned, and I probably should have shown you, if you have a ball locked here, when you're in a different multiball other than bird one, you have the ability to swipe your lock your locked ball. So, you can actually hold your button. So, if you're about to drain in one of the other multiballs and you want to keep it going, you can swipe that locked ball, which is kind of unique. I saw that in Stranger Thing as well. I think that's a Lonnie thing. Lonnie Robs, the guy who coded this game. But, um, hopefully that explains it. I promise you I forgot something. If I did, leave it in the comments. Hopefully that's helpful. Hopefully that explains one of the ways that you can play this game. And um, yeah, just go enjoy it. Just go enjoy playing Bond. But, thank you for clicking on the video. Like, subscribe, all the things. And you guys all have a great rest of your day. Bye. It's a wrench, guys. It's uh I don't have a cool gun.
