TL;DR

GTF reveal frustrates Don: cool mechs but zero gameplay context, pricing confusion, deposits live.

Summary

Don critiques American Pinball's surprise reveal of Galactic Tank Force, which dropped with minimal information despite distributors already taking deposits. While the gameplay footage showed interesting mechanics (wire ramps, moving UFO toy, visible lock), Don emphasizes the lack of crucial details: unclear trim level differences, unexplained pricing ($8,995–$11,000), missing gameplay context, and confusing accessories (thermos, lunchbox). He urges American Pinball to release comprehensive information before customers commit money.

Key Claims

  • American Pinball released GTF with only a pre-recorded video, no live stream, approximately 65–70% screen/FMV content

high confidence · Don watched the reveal at 12:30 CST and described the format: ~1 minute countdown pre-roll, video not live, heavy FMV with brief gameplay clips

  • GTF will be produced in 700 tank-treaded cabinet units total: 200 Signature (call for price), 500 LE ($10,995)

high confidence · Don cites production numbers from the reveal; Signature tier pricing not disclosed

  • LE trim includes 3D backglass (undefined), shaker motor, knocker, magic glass, art blades, playfield lighting; Signature adds thermos and lunchbox

medium confidence · Don references Nap Arcade breakdown and the reveal materials; exact specs for 3D backglass unclear even to Don

  • Deluxe edition (Premium equivalent) priced at $8,995; LE at $10,995, both before shipping/tax

high confidence · Don cites official pricing from the reveal

  • Playfield features wire ramps, plastic ramps, moving UFO toy with cow-on-wire animation, visible lock at end of playfield, bonus lanes under flippers, atomic save ball saver

medium confidence · Don describes brief video clips (1–1.5 second each) from the reveal; mechanics only partially shown

  • No gameplay context, story explanation, or villain motivation provided in the reveal

high confidence · Don repeatedly notes absence of narrative, character purposes, and gameplay mode details

  • Distributors are already accepting non-refundable deposits despite incomplete product information

high confidence · Don cites direct email blasts from two distributors requesting deposits on same day as reveal

  • Classic Edition listed as TBD, to be released later in 2025

high confidence · Don references GTF trim chart mentioning Classic edition with TBD status

Don @ ~2:00 — Sets Don's main frustration: reveal lacks fundamental product details needed to justify pre-orders

  • “So none of that matters because the phone lines are open, and distributors are taking money in deposits right now. So you need to buy this now, I guess, is what we're supposed to think. But I still am not sure what they're actually selling.”

Don @ ~3:30 — Core criticism: distributors rushing pre-orders before specs are clear

  • “They mentioned a 3D back glass with that version which is not listed at all in the limited edition What is 3D back glass Is it like 3D molded? Is it 3D effects? Is it just what you're calling it? I don't know.”

Don @ ~5:00 — Illustrates vague marketing language creating confusion among consumers

  • “I'm not in third grade anymore. What the heck am I going to do with a thermos? I'm an adult, dang it, and I can drive through McDonald's if I want to.”

  • “For my game room, I'm not dragging this thing down my stairs based on what I've seen so far. I want to see more.”

Don @ ~20:00 — Don's buying decision hinges on more information; signals reluctance for home use despite intrigue

  • “There's wire form ramps. You know I love those... But I get like a 1.5 second clip of that. I don't know how it integrates in the gameplay.”

Don @ ~17:30 — Positive mechanical elements undermined by inadequate demonstration and context

  • “Can you guys help me out? Is there another trailer coming forth with? Did a cat trip over the cord and so that wasn't able to finish uploading and we're going to get that soon?”

Don — Speculates reveal felt incomplete; half-joking but suggests professional execution gap

Signals

  • ?

business_signal: Distributors accepting non-refundable deposits same day as reveal despite incomplete specifications; creates risk for buyers and signals premature sales push

high · Don reports two distributors emailed deposit requests within hours of reveal; criticizes this as putting cart before horse when customers lack critical information

  • ?

community_signal: Don's frustration reflects broader community concern: excitement tempered by lack of transparency and rushed sales tactics; mirrors prior criticism of American Pinball's communication (Galactic Tank Force prior version issues)

medium · Don's tone and specific complaints (unclear specs, missing story context, thermos confusion) suggest these are community-wide frustrations he's voicing; his call to action implies others share these questions

  • ?

competitive_signal: GTF trim strategy mirrors Stern model (Pro/Premium/LE tiers) with added complexity: Signature edition between Deluxe and LE with undefined features and 'call for price'; adds confusion rather than clarity on value ladder

medium · Don notes four tiers (Classic TBD, Deluxe $8995, Signature call-for-price, LE $10995) but unclear what justifies Signature premium over LE given both described identically except for accessories

  • ?

design_philosophy: GTF showcases interesting mechanics (Vuk lock, moving UFO toy, wire ramps, bonus lanes, atomic save) but revelation strategy prioritizes visual spectacle (FMV, high-voltage LED photography) over mechanical demonstration and gameplay context

medium · Don praises individual mechanics seen in clips but criticizes lack of integration explanation; notes he's never seen light rails in dynamic footage or understood their purpose despite being marketed feature

Sentiment

negative(0.25)— Don is frustrated by the reveal's incompleteness and lack of transparency. He acknowledges cool mechanics glimpsed in video but heavily criticizes American Pinball's failure to provide essential information (trim specs, pricing rationale, gameplay context, story) while deposits are already being collected. His tone is critical, sometimes sarcastic (thermos joke), but not hostile—he's seeking better communication, not attacking the game's core design. Underlying tone: disappointed in execution rather than disgusted with the product itself.

you knew don's pinball podcast would be back into your ears when we got some reveals from american pinball's new release galactic tank space mega force ice cream social salad adventure and today it just dropped about 30 minutes ago i've watched the trailer of what we got there are still so many questions i have about this game and distributors are ready to take your money where's the rest of the information guys you know i'm going to come through with some reviews and some info for you and perspective right now i was really hoping to have a ton of information just lay kind of everything out man shot layout action adventure well trim levels what all is included what the gameplay is like and what's the deal with space ice cream and i've got none of that it's 12 30 central standard time and we had just gotten the reveal of uh american pen balls galactic tank force and really all we got was a youtube video um of which there was like a minute of pre-recorded countdown for some reason um and then it wasn't a live stream this is a video that they made like that what i saw was about 65 to 70 percent uh screen you know full motion video capture and i saw little clips of some gameplay and some shots which admittedly It looked very interesting, and I really wanted to know more about that. So none of that matters because the phone lines are open, and distributors are taking money in deposits right now. So you need to buy this now, I guess, is what we're supposed to think. But I still am not sure what they're actually selling. Let me just go over. Finally, we did have some numbers. Let's get to that first. Now, I see that they have four trim levels here. At the top level, they've got their tank machine that we've all seen the pictures of. it's available in two versions. They're making 700 of these box cabinets with the tank treads. 200 of them are up at what they call the signature level, and it says call for price, so who knows what that is going to be. And then there's a limited edition trim level comes with the same cabinet from what I can see, of which there will be 500 of those. So a total of 700 across the trim levels. But that's really what I'm wondering though, is what exactly is included with each of these trim levels. The only place I've been able to see something released since the release is Nap Arcade, where they break down these four editions. And from what I can see, the difference between the Signature and the Limited Edition is limited to just a lot of other accessories that you get, like a banner. And, you know, you have them sign the apron. Who's the apron signed by? We have no idea. Is Kerry Hoskins signing it? I don't know. Is Nordman going to sign it? It was signed by somebody, whoever's at the factory that day. Come on American Pinball Let me know what you trying to sell me They mentioned a 3D back glass with that version which is not listed at all in the limited edition What is 3D back glass Is it like 3D molded? Is it 3D effects? Is it just what you're calling it? I don't know. I saw none of that in the trailer that I just watched. There's a lunchbox, apparently. I've seen a photo of the lunchbox. You get a thermos with the price on request trim level, but the limited edition does not include that, but it is sold separately, but without the thermos, what in the world is going on? I don't know. And neither does anybody else because that's all the information that's been released. Let's run this down. Limited edition. You get that tank cabinet basically with, you know, the accessories included, including a shaker motor, a knocker, those sorts of things, magic glass. They say upgraded rails. Don't indicate what that means, but the price $10,995, dollars 11 000 bucks plus shipping plus tax depending on your situation for the limited edition if you want that led tank treaded cabinet sitting in your game room that's what it's going to be if you want to put it in your mini golf arcade it's going to be 11 000 and you're going to get that magic glass uh you comes with art blades playfield lighting so this is the what looks like the same thing that pin stadium is doing and sells for 450 dollars uh probably 60 worth of parts. They're including that here. I count that as a plus. I think that's cool to come with lighting. I like extra light effects and it's included. And, you know, on the plus side, you know, this limited edition isn't priced at like the Jersey Jack level of $12,000, but on the converse aspect, I think that's overpriced too. So $11,000 if you want a tank, there's $500. You can get those now. I have seen nobody advertising as of yet for that signature edition. Moving along, There is also their deluxe edition, which in American pinball terms correlates to a premium, like one step up from the ground level edition. They got $8,995 on this, and it's still listed, includes the art blades, includes that play field lighting, shaker, knocker, and the magic glass. So it looks like every version of this machine is including the upgraded non-reflective glass. About $240 or so, you can get some voodoo glass for that. uh knocker and shaker about 150 bucks altogether play field lighting you know spin the wheel what's that worth to you um and then art blades which run about 80 bucks depending on you know what kind you're getting um so it looks like the the boxes will be the same the tank boxes are coming with that i don't i can't even call it a topper it's a topper when you fold the the back cabinet down and there is a graphic on the top of the backbox so when this thing's folded up it looks like a tank. Nobody plays pinball machines folded up, but it's an industry first. So does the deluxe edition come with that graphic on the top If you want to fold it down is there an upgrade for this topper It not really a topper but you can see a little bit of that flashing turret light when the box is folded up you know in the play condition all of these are questions that i was hoping to have answered um and i didn get any of that i got two trim levels that are on sale right now a deluxe edition and a limited edition they also do list a classic edition but it just says tbd to be determined release later this year it says so that gives them another seven months or so to bring another game out which will be i'm assuming something it's more stripped down what i did see with the tank cabinets is those uh they have some lollipop uh silver powder coated rails and armor um that's listed well let's see the signature call for price edition has silver metallic armor under limited edition it just says upgraded rails i don't know what that means um what rails are we talking about are we talking about the side rail armor is it going to have the same powder coat is the that top edition you know what are we buying assuming i was all in on this theme, which I was reserving judgment for, and I had money I wanted to go, I don't know what I'm getting. I don't know who to call for this signature edition. I don't know everything that's coming with it. And what I also don't know is about the game itself. Let's talk about the gameplay for a moment. Now we've seen reveals of the play field. So we've been able to read the inserts and see kind of an idea of how the modes go. And there's some like, you know, tank modes. There's a series of lights down there on the lower play field. One side says tanks, once I says ice cream, as far as what that means and what the story of this game is, which is really one of the things I was hoping to see, no mention of that. We saw some clips of live action of questionable quality. At first, I thought I was maybe watching Cinemax late at night and some Red Shoe Diaries or some kind of thing. But who are these characters? They gave us names, but are they all on the same team? Are they on opposite teams? Apparently, there's a villain. Why is she a villain? Why should I care? Can you guys help me out? Is there another trailer coming forth with? Did a cat trip over the cord and so that wasn't able to finish uploading and we're going to get that soon? I have no idea. But I've had two distributors that I'm on email blast lists for show up in my email already asking for non-refundable deposits for this limited edition and deluxe edition. But nobody's been able to say what it actually comes with. And that's what I think all of us were waiting for today. What is this space tank ice cream game? What are the modes? How does the game play? How does it shoot? You show off these light rails. I've only seen them in pictures. I see them listed as a feature. I have no idea what they do. Show me some video footage of them programmed and how they integrate. Should I be wowed by this? All I've seen is high-voltage purple lit-up images of the play field, and that's it. So I need to see some dynamic gameplay here. And the clock is ticking. If you want to get one of these, these things are limited. and if you don't get your deposit in soon your number is going to be higher even if you do get in and then maybe into next year before you even get this game when are they going to be delivered I don know but I sitting on my wallet right now and it staying firmly in my pocket because I see no compelling reason to go in on this I just don't think we have enough information. Hopefully more is coming out today. But so far, I've reached out to a couple of distributors. I posted on their social sites. Hey, is there more reveal coming? Is there more information? What are we actually getting? What's the deal with this thermos? Why is this thermos worth an extra three? Well, we don't know how much a thermos is worth because the price is on request. You have to call for price. Is it going to be $15,000, $20,000? Is it $3,000 just to get a thermos? Do I even want the thermos? I'm not in third grade anymore. What the heck am I going to do with a thermos? I'm an adult, dang it, and I can drive through McDonald's if I want to. I was hoping to have a ton more information here to kind of go over and really dive into. That's what I like about these pinball reveals. From what we did see of the gameplay, there's some cool stuff in here. I like the Vuk that shoots the balls of the wire ramp into the lock. It looks like it's a visible lock at the end of the play field. Is it? I don't know. I've only seen a close-up clip of it, along with some pinball programmers masquerading as characters in some kind of space tank jet thing. But that looked like a cool mechanism. There's wire form ramps. You know I love those. There's plastic ramps. Uh, there's a moving UFO shot, which looks to have a cow on a piece of wire string, almost like this cow was in a noose being lifted up by a UFO that look cool. But I get like a 1.5 second clip of that. I don't know how it integrates in the gameplay. Is it something that's always available? Can I sit there and put a dollar in this machine and just shoot cows for three minutes? That's the things that I want to know that I don't know now. Um, completely ignored were those, uh, bonus lanes underneath the flippers. What do they do? How do they integrate? um there is they did show that you know atomic save stopper that that ball save that pops up between the flippers how do you activate it how often it is is it there does it make the gameplay too easy does it make the gameplay too hard no idea no idea at all um if i had a fairly robust arcade location that was known to have the newest games rotating through i think i'd go in on one of these and cross my fingers that just having the newest and maybe rare game out would bring customers in, I think I would go on it. For my game room, I'm not dragging this thing down my stairs based on what I've seen so far. I want to see more. Come on, guys. You know, show me some more of what you got. I don't know. Quick takes. I want to get something out today. I want to have more to talk about. I don't, though, but I want to get this out there with my initial impressions and really just ask the distributors and American Pinball, give us some more information, please. Can I have a little bit more, sir? Yes, sir, please, sir. Can I have a little crumb of more information about the Galactic Space Ice Cream Social Game? Hit me up.
