We are live from Zach's basement, Fresh Pinball, the freshest of the fresh, fresh. Welcome everyone to season three, episode three of the Fresh Pinball podcast. I was told that it's been three weeks since we recorded. I felt like it was only two weeks, but apparently it's been three. So we'll get this out here for everyone's listening pleasure.

Finally in a nice, cool basement. man ohio like the last three days has been like 95 degrees humid heat wave hot hot hot hot hot and mind you i work inside yeah oh my god i don't do well with the heat i don't know the worst it's fine if i'm just outside you know that's fine but when i go inside then back outside the inside that's that's what gives me it's not good material delivery suck corbin across from me here at the table corbin doing good doing good how we feeling feeling good feeling great yeah got my headphones working fantastic i was hoping you were flipping fantastic always man sorry i stole it from you you did kyle i love it it's okay because everyone should be flipping fantastic all right well let's kick off this episode with the fact check so as i was preparing my notes for this episode i was listening back to the end of a previous episode and my son noren heard us talking about magic school bus he's like oh yeah there was definitely a magic school bus episode about pinball i'm like what are you talking about and he remembered and he's cool that he's remembering it from like seven years ago right not 35 years ago exactly so of course i go to the google machine I look it up, and lo and behold, there is a pinball episode. So for all of you out there wondering, Season 3, Episode 7 of the PBS Classic. I don't know if I've watched it. Have you watched it? Did you watch it? I've not seen this episode of the Magic School Bus. We have to fire it up here on the TV. We're going to pause the podcast. We'll be back in 28 minutes. 20 minutes later. So check it out. The little synopsis that I saw on Wikipedia was it is a color-based episode, like the colors of the rainbow sort of situation. So check it out. It's safe to assume they're probably playing Wizard of Oz.

And name your favorite Data East game. Favorite, not necessarily because it's the best game of the Data East, but the one that you're walking down a row and you see that game and you're like, yeah, I'm going to play that. So for me, it's a lower production one and it's Monday Night Football. Ooh, yeah. Not a great game. Yeah, Rob's got that one out. That game. Yeah, the one out at past times, it looks like Cleveland Browns. Oh, that one's cool. Yeah, it's cool reading. This explicit episode of the Fresh Pinball Podcast is going to be in part five. I feel like the Monday Night Football, I've had so many home calls on these and they are Always train wrecks. All of them. Well, they've probably never been serviced. No, never. I just love the jump ramp that puts you through the goalposts. The special solenoid section. Really? It's the same as System 11. And I don't think I've ever run into one where there wasn't a ton of playfield wear down by the flippers. That's just always ripped. That's not my favorite game. That's my favorite. That's my one whenever I see it. They used to have one at the Pins Mechanical at Easton. And it was not by the other pinball machines. It was tucked away in a corner. It was like 50 cents a game, and I would mosey over there. It was right by the nasty bathroom. It was by the nasty bathroom. I bet it was.

Because it's such a pretty game. It is. It's not the funnest game, but it's very pretty. It's brutal, though. Yeah. That one we played, that guy, he did inspire me to almost unfold mine and do something with it. That one had some extensive touch-ups on the play field. Our play field melted in the one area because someone put way too big a light bulb in one of the inserts. I think they were all like that on like the candle opera on the play field but actually I think I'm going to go crazy left field and go torpedo alley that was an early game for you I forgot about that I didn't own it but it's great what was the one that you did own that was the early one secret service that's what I was thinking torpedo alley that is out of left field yeah that game is What do the flippers say on Secret Service? Don't they say something? Punisher or something? Pulverizer.

    The one I had, too, was a prototype or a sample game or something. It had some weird different shit on it. Of course. It's kind of interesting.

    It has that thing that comes up in the middle and it actually said radar jammer on it instead of just being a plastic. Like in between the flippers? Yeah. Like big guns and stuff. Yeah, yeah. Exactly. But it actually said radar jammer. That's cool. Instead of just being blank. So speaking of prototypes, whenever I was looking through the list of Data East games to make my selection, I was astounded by how many prototype or custom build games there were off of Data East. Oh, yeah. So there was a prototype for Mad Magazine where there was just one produced. There was a King Kong that was produced.

    I've always heard interesting things about that one. I've read a few things about that. I've read some things about it, and I've heard that it's been around at shows before. I definitely would love to run into it at a show. Agreed. And then there was a custom build of three for Aaron Spelling and his children, which I thought was just absolutely bizarre.

And I know Joe Kamikow was very involved at that time, so I'm sure he's just like anywhere you can make a dollar. I'm just glancing over your shoulder. But this is the same time as Adam's. Some of those are early years, too. Some of this stuff is like Adam's family and stuff. I've seen that. Whitewater, Indiana Jones. Yeah, Total Recall, 1990. Yeah. King Kong, 1990. So, I mean, that's right around the time. Val Williams was just putting out such bangers at that time. That's the problem. I think that's the discussion we've had before about Data East and Gottlieb, though, is you can't compare them apples to apples. You're supposed to love them, Corbin. We're not helping the... So, Corbin, what is your pick? What is your dating east? So, if I'm walking down the line, I would say Hook is always... I love Hook. I do love Hook. Or I love that Jurassic Park. There are some fun games. They had good themes. The themes were there. Tales from the Crypt was fun when we had that for a little bit. You used to have one of those. I remember playing it as a kid, even. Yeah, yeah.

Some neat mechs. So, everyone, that was a good five minutes of us giving Data East props and love. So, email her. So, what's their worst game? Fucking Ninja Turtles. Fuck that game. No, Ninja Turtles isn't the worst. Monday Night Football. Hey, hey, hey. Lethal Weapon 3. Yeah, that's right. We had two of those at one point, too.

    Whenever you had that on location and at the same spot for a minute, you had Terminator, which are basically the exact same layout, and I would get put on those games back-to-back. I just wanted to punch you in your face, but yeah. Not a huge fan of Lethal Weapon 3. I sold one of those back when I didn't sell any games. I was like, do you have any games for me? I'm like, I do, Lethal Weapon 3. It's coded in a cool way though Because I do love the interactivity Of you get into a video mode or whatever And now you have to use the gun for certain things Okay Star Wars is the same way And Jurassic Park Yeah they're all the same I love that it's just another cool little interactive feature I always thought Daddy East Guns N' Roses was pretty cool I do like that one too And it's a wide body It has a song That's Guns N' Roses That is only for that game, which is really cool. Which I think is so cool. Yes, I agree. Well, we were talking about this. In this day and age, we can just download it. But then you actually had to go play the game to hear that track. I dig that. I think that's so cool. Which is cool. Well, I mean, that's interesting on the JJP version, too, is if you have it on adult mode, you get all of the songs. If you have it on non-explicit mode, so like family-friendly, then you just don't get like half of the songs because it's like they aren't going to censor them whatsoever. It's like either you get the songs or you don't. I'm not going to bleep it out or anything like Rick and Morty on family friendly. It's like either you're getting it or you're not. Did I tell you about the mode I got into on that one when we were testing them or whatever? And it went into like, it was like war games or whatever. That was cool. That sounds so cool, yeah. It went into like, yeah, I was just playing it and then like the game shuts down. I was like, oh, is it not working or whatever? And then it goes like a little squiggly and then it comes up in like war game, like the movie, you know, if I want to play a game. Then you start launching missiles at China or whatever. It was pretty cool. I was like, whoa, I actually like this game right now. At the pricing where you can get a GNR LE now, it makes it much more attractive. I had never played an OEM. You know I'm not a Super Jersey Jack guy, but wasn't that one of the releases that had a really bad playfield issue? Yeah, so they had pooling issues on them. They were just chipping and breaking. I would hope by now that the new ones that are coming out, I would think, are a problem. I would assume. I would hope they have it under control, but I don't know. Yeah, I mean, or they had the washers at least. Correct, yeah. Because I think we talked about it briefly before. It wasn't really that the clear coat or the play field itself was the problem. It was that they had drilled the holes for the post too big, the diameter too much. So then whenever you hit a post, it's pushing against it. It's pushing, it's pushing. But it has movement. And it has movement. Whereas traditionally those are pretty tight in there. Right. So by adding those washers, it snugged it up. So now whenever it hits the post. It's probably just like sent out of sleeve. You just pound in around the post. I'm not an engineer I would not Do you want people smacking around on a playfield What Some of these people I guess they're not us Exactly We could do it Look at Jeff over here He wouldn't Jeff fucking just broke something So Data East GNR We were talking about this pre-podcast Is one of a handful of games we could think of That has the additional plunger. I kind of want one of those. So, Data East GNR.

So, next topic was after the Whitewater episode, someone asked why the whitewater topper can't be reproduced and i didn't know the answer to this question and i know corbin knows a little bit more about this than i do so corbin what is the little bit that you know okay from what i remember reading about it it's the material in the middle like the foil right and so like the it's a combination of this special foil in the pattern of the lights lights are easy to recreate it's the foil some kind of right i think it's like a chemical that's possibly not legal anymore. We were talking about it a little bit, but what if it's like asbestos with mercury on it? Something like that mixed together.

    I think it's the chemical in the foil. It's like the diamond plating on the playfields. yeah yeah we can't do it it's not safe well the rumor i'd heard about diamond plating was that they stopped doing it because games were lasting too long i'm done i can say i can attest our games that have diamond plating on them are still today look stupid good like hurricane you're like oh my god this thing looks good just wipe it down looks good diner looks good yep doctor who yeah um because you put like funhouse next to one of those and it's like this game is rough yeah yeah we We've got to do some of that. Or a new storm. So I think it is something with the chemicals in the foil, though, back to what we were talking about. I think it has something to do with that. And then, like we had said with the scratch build, that is the one thing that I would say is just a little different. It a very cool effect still It just different but it not the same like effect that it looks like it water is cascading over the top of that topper So I was talking to the builder of our whitewater the other day and in exciting news, hit the sounder here, Kyle.

    Anyway. So next item, Corbin had texted me the other day or text the group and said that pinball should be in the actual Olympics. I was watching the trials the other night and I was like. So I'm not totally against this idea, but I'm just wondering how a pinball athlete would be looked at compared to all of the other Olympians. We saw the pinball athletes at pinball Olympics. Yeah, it might be best just at pinball Olympics. I thought about it. more, but... Upon further review, maybe pinball shouldn't be in the actual Olympics. I'd like to watch some more pinball in the Olympics. Well, I do feel like pinball on TV, like, commentated the correct way, like, in an entertaining way, could be on the same level as World Series of Poker or something like that. I've always thought ESPN ate the Ocho. Is that what you're thinking? Dodgeball. Speaking of which, I saw it's like the 20-something anniversary of Dodgeball, which made me feel incredibly old so i saw an interview with justin long where he said that he was actually concussed during part of one of the scenes where they were throwing things at him they threw a fucking wrench at him but it wasn't a real wrench it was still like dodgeball no see they accidentally put a real wrench in there accidentally put a real wrench in there i just don't even understand how these things happen slipped right in so are we gonna get a dodgeball too like is that what we're teasing here what's happening i need to know no yeah can't recapture that magic sometimes it's best just to let it go let it go so one of our rochester new york listeners um had mentioned that the the church place that you and i had visited is called the playhouse slash swill burger and that was the one that we ate the burger there yeah we were comparing to holy moly um and that's one of their go-to spots there so that is called shout out there to the playhouse. It's a cool spot. It's a very cool spot. Great spot. Yeah, and it's just the only, yeah, yeah, very cool spot. They had a lot of good stuff there. It just lost the church vibe. It just didn't feel like a church. That's the only thing. That was our point. Yeah. One of our Toledo listeners wanted to let us know that another cool feature of visiting Tony Paco's for their signature hot dogs and Hungarian food is that every location has hot dog buns on the walls that are signed by celebrities that have visited Tony Paco's.     So during the last episode, Corbin had mentioned from VFW, Mars Trek, a 1977 Sonic release as a game that spoke to him. Cool game. And I remember my first trip to Seattle, me and the fam fly in, late night flight, land at like 10 o'clock, grab an Uber to the hotel. And I'm like, all right, you guys are going to bed. I'm going to go out and hit one pin bar, one. So I grabbed myself the little, you know, kick scooter and I scanned myself in and I'm headed to the Ray Gun Lounge in Seattle. And I get there and I think they had somewhere in the range of like a dozen games or so. A bunch of Sterns, some 90s Bally Williams, and all of a sudden, I see in the row a Mars Trek. Really? All right, so at the machine shop, I get people find out that we do pinball stuff here. And they're like, I got this Japanese pinball. that needs repair i'm like well what is it and he just kept like oh i'm not sure this it turns out it was a chinko machine oh platinko right so i'm like no they always are when they're like i have a japanese a pinball it hangs on the wall it's like oh yeah it's like okay but so then corbin and i were talking about it and it got us wondering if that what did japan ever make any pinball so i did some googling and it turns out they did so sega of japan made um 25 pinball different total different titles total from 71 to 79 uh the first nine of them were em and the rest were solid state and um yeah it seems pretty interesting then jeff told me out at past times they have one of those actual ones out there so during the lead up to the opening of past times Mike Hale would do on a regular basis, and it was a really cool feature of this game just showed up. It's wrapped up. He didn't really always know what was wrapped up, and he would open it up and set it up. And one of them was one of the Sega games from Japan. That was a really cool segment. I enjoyed watching it. I enjoyed watching that a lot. I also just find it fascinating that they just have – that Rob Berg just has all these games, and he's just like, I don't even know. Who knows? We have no idea what it's going to be. Because that's literally what it felt like. He would have sometimes one game or three games completely. World record holding. Yeah, that's right. He did. Congrats to that. That is a big time shout out. And so he also had to have all those on legs. They had to have pictures of them all. So I thought that was interesting. They had to be on legs. They had to be set up. And they didn't count any duplicate titles.
