Hey, you're listening to the Poor Man's Pinball Podcast with Drew, like, oh, there's balls everywhere, and Ian. you're as cold as ice you're willing to sacrifice our love welcome to the poor man's pinball podcast episode number 16 i'm ian and with me is drew drew how you doing buddy i'm doing great hey did we uh acquire the assets for that song there buddy uh we were looking into it and shh don't tell anyone is is that song gonna immerse us into foreigner i have just been digging foreigner lately they're at summerfest the local music festival here in milwaukee and uh yeah you're so modest you mean the biggest music festival in the world i don't know if it's the biggest in the world i'm pretty sure it's not they always tout it as i think it's just marketing that's the local the local scene the biggest Music Festival in the world. I'm not being a homer here, but I really think it is. If you just think about how many acts are actually there, it's huge. What is it, like six stages, seven stages? Oh, yeah, no more than that. Like a dozen stages, 12, 10 days? 10 days. 10 days. Big headliners on each stage at the end of the night. It's pretty crazy. Yes. It's pretty crazy. Summerfest. Woo! Well, that'll do it. That'll wrap up our podcast for episode number 16. Hope everyone enjoyed it. Go to Summerfest 2020. Peace. We're out. What are you drinking today, Drew? Knott's Kessler's. What are you drinking? You're drinking some rum and coke, I see. Yeah. I'm spinning the bottle. That's what that sound is. That's Belmont. Belmont Estate. This is more of the Caribbean rum. Yeah, man. Ooh. That's Jamaican. Is Jamaica not in the Caribbean? Yeah, man. Is it Caribbean or Caribbean? I don't know. I would say Caribbean. I'm a Caribbean man, too. Email us at poormanspinballpodcast. They're supposed to spell it the same way. It wouldn't even work. I pronounce it Caribbean. Email us at poormanspinball at gmail.com and let us know how you pronounce it. Yeah, and you won't be able to tell us in an email, will you? No, they won't. You can use phonetic spelling. Look at me with these big words today. Phonetic. Phonetic. Nice. Nice, brother. Nice. I am drinking Red Stripe, speaking in Jamaica. So there you go. I'm drinking some Red Stripe today. We're all Caribbean today. Yeah, I like it. You know, it's great when you find a really good batch because, you know, it's hit or miss with these ones. But, yeah, it's good, man. Tastes delicious. Red Stripe is a good beer. It really is. I had four the other day. I was drunk off my ass. I'm getting old. That's dad stuff for you. Yep. Doesn't take much these days. Drink a beer, take a nap, repeat. No one's mowing the lawn today. All right. So should we talk about a little bit of a bottleneck that's forming in the land of pinball? Pinball land does have a little bit of a bottleneck. We have a couple new games out. Black Knight was released recently. Willy Wonka just started shipping. But more importantly, what we're interested in is later this year. Later this year, December. Yeah, we think around December there's going to be, God, how many new games from 2019 do You think they'll be by December. You think Cosmic Carnival might be shipping by then, too, full scale? They're already manufacturing them, so I can't imagine why not. Let's go through the list. Let's do it. Let's go through the list. So I don't think CGC is going to be releasing, but they will be announcing probably by the end of the year, you think? Cactus Canyon? Yeah, we'll consider the reveal as their – Yeah. Yeah. Because you're sitting there with money in your pocket. Which one are you going to get? This kind of part of the bottleneck, right? They're going to kind of choose something for Christmas maybe or shortly thereafter. We'll see something from Deep Root by then. I don't think so. No, they're going to show their Texas, right? Oh, I'm sorry. You're right. The Raza. Yeah. The Raza prototype. So you'll have some idea what that's coming up. Yeah. Guns N' Roses from JJP, probably end of December. That's what Kaneda was saying today. I think we will, yeah, we will see the reveal. And actually, Jack let it out of the bag. He said. And lately, whatever Jack's been saying has been coming to fruition. so welcome to the jungle sorry all right uh american pinball what do you think you think uh the houdini or no the october fest is gonna be pretty much it's fizzling out already wrapping up and we're on to game number three and not saying like they're not selling any but they're gonna need to inject some life into that business by announcing something a new one yeah something exciting yeah we got that and cosmic carnival i'm thinking right oh and the elvira in october stern yeah that one's been confirmed so that one's kind of there so what we got we got elvira we got something potentially from american pinball we got something from suncoast cgc jjp so that's that's potentially five new pins between now and december which you know money's gonna be running tight actually if you're if you're considering from now you got to remember jurassic park might be revealed at the end of the month so and yep that's six six games by the end of the month do you think a lot of people fighting for your dollars and remember guys expo is coming up in october so do we think that any of these reveals are going to happen there or not not stern's backyard or no stern's probably i like canada's idea of them revealing that in comic-con just because Stern has been avoiding. They don't do the big shows. Yeah, they've been avoiding the pinball shows as far as the reviews. Why do you think that is? They're just spreading the love to all these other shows, I think, all these other shows, and they're trying to grow the business because they did, what, the electronics? Yeah. I mean, most recently, Gary Stern was in China. They're really trying to open up that China market now. Have you seen some of this stuff? You know what? I don't want the Chinese to play pinball. Can I tell you why? Yeah, go ahead. Because they're fucking, like, really good. they're zen masters on video games it's all over you introduced them to starcraft like those koreans and starcraft it was over man starcraft was done you racist i gated myself no not even that you just you just they're good chinese and koreans no no no no no i i i know they're separate that's why i said koreans but uh dude but no like you ever play like a fighting game with these guys oh it's it's wild out of control they're so good at what they do and if you don't believe us just just open up a youtube video of like you know koreans play street fighter or something and you see these virtual fighter yeah it's crazy these tournaments these guys get fucking nuts i mean it is crazy yeah they're just too good at stuff so yeah we don't need that kind of drama in my life i'm already bad at playing pinball to put myself up against someone like that i don't have zen like focus yeah you're right they're disciplined yeah that's the thing it's it's the discipline yeah yeah exactly anyway yeah so well what were we going with that we were talking we were talking about x i'm gonna i'm gonna reel in back in here we're uh we're coming chinese we are we love you china we're departing china we're coming back to the united states now and uh we were talking about expo in chicago not china oh yeah yeah we're gonna be there we are gonna be there uh i don't think our wives know that yet but my wife does oh your wife oh i let the cat out of the bag because i wasn't gonna risk not being able to go oh i'm in trouble so but guess what i saved your ass too because i told her i said hey get together with laura if you girls want to do your own thing and i made it very clear your own thing we'll have dinner one night with them but i said ian and i are gonna be sweaty playing pinball doing what we do and you guys can go do what you do i'm gonna be sweaty playing pinball you better believe it buddy i don't know how i feel about that but let's do it no no double entendre there we're just gonna be sweaty playing with balls all right very straightforward all right 8 23 we're gonna be sweaty playing with balls i'm gonna mark that down ian's been marking down all my awesome uh words of wisdom lately and i think he's gonna turn into a great show one day when i'm not here he's just gonna play him back to back to back it's gonna be our two hours of one hour uh or no our uh one year anniversary i'm just gonna do i'll give you a preview it's gonna be like welcome to the poor man's pinball podcast i love balls it's just gonna go on for like an hour and a half and then he's gonna be like and that was our show ladies and gentlemen that'd be our one year show yeah hey drew thank you for a great year this is what happened in the year nothing you talked about balls it's gonna take so long but it's gonna be so worth that would be so funny though so anyway so we got all these games coming out and which one really stands out to you i know we haven't seen them uh what intrigues you the most out of all those games we just kind of mentioned jurassic world would if it was jurassic park that one word actually makes a huge difference to me it does although you know what i do like is from Jurassic World part of it. I do like what they did with the font and the look of that movie. That would translate pretty well pinball-wise, visually. I agree. I'm not talking about the sequel because I didn't even watch that. Once I heard the dinosaurs were crying, I said, no, thank you. I think it has the potential to be a great pin. I'm just saying on theme alone, a Jurassic Park quote-unquote remake with the original cast some of the original stuff would be very cool see what what loses me for that game though um is that just because stern's making it i'm sorry no it's it's a tough sell it bothers me every time man now i feel like my my hope is is off to maybe somebody else spooky or oh yeah spooky second game coming out too at the end of december probably uh yeah that's an easy second one you see second game that's another one and and i don't want to go off on a tangent but since we're talking about spooky here this is our show it's tangents fuck it i can do what i want what am i thinking um before i came here tonight uh i was talking to my wife about pinball and she was rolling her eyes as usual but you know she's a good wife and she listens so um she is a good boy i forgot exactly what the line of um conversation was about but i mentioned that a lot of people in the community were clamoring for uh stranger things pin and she got super animated about it and it was so cool yeah i was talking to jeff from this weekend pinball did you hear see that one no i didn't okay but she can talk about that later she started uh rattling off ideas for it yeah what was her ideas because i was giving ideas out to the the what do they call it the demo gogan i think i said that gogan yeah demo gogan yeah um that would open up as like a ball lock okay cool right like the t-rex yeah and then she talked about you know the upside down um upside down world upside down world but you know she we weren't sure how to do it but then i gave her some ideas that um somebody mentioned on pin side about using the game like black hole how you go on the lower play field and it's like sound like lower play no no that's fine i i know that would be too obvious to me maybe um and then another good idea i think uh zach many had it was about the um the lights on the wall the christmas lights every light would be like a mode for the game which would be kind of cool yep anyways but she she rattled off like 10 more ideas and my wife has never talked to me about pinball for more than like eight seconds and this this went on this went on play this went on for eight to ten minutes before i left and she told me she said if that game ever comes out we're buying it instantly and we're gonna play it every night so anyways i just had to share that with you guys came out yes because we've been watching it okay it's very good and she's really and she doesn't like like horror thriller kind of stuff but she's really into the show which is really cool yeah you know who's scarier than the demigorgon what's that is winona rider dude she's fucking scary it's pretty crazy isn't it anyway so my ideas so that would actually work with my ideas upside down world i know why we were talking about it Jeff and I back and forth a little bit and I think what with well we weren't talking about I was posting and he probably thumbs up but my idea was the upside down world could be done with lighting just turn off the lights and do some turn off all this all the gi I thought having that little tiny lights and then yeah because it more like black and white almost And there those little things that kind of float in the air so you would need something that Yeah, you could probably do something with lighting. But my ideas were this. If Stern did it, would they just put fishing line, like, on the... Each kid is a... You would, just like in Jersey Jack's Pirates, each character would be a kid. You can select each kid. Each kid has different buffs, because it's only, like, what, five kids. So it's not, like, crazy. Yeah, it's not a ton of characters. Yeah, I think it'd be cool. too much for you to understand. And then maybe have the Sheriff and Winona Ryder. I was just thinking the kids, right? And then if you, let's say you unlock the, or if you hit Grandmaster on your game, you unlock Eleven, you know? And what Eleven does is you get a special multiball with Eleven. That was her power. And what's cool with Eleven, the character, is when you select her, that's when the magnets fire. Like, she's moving shit with her brain. I was just about to say, if you did that with her, there'd have to be lots of magnet action lots of magnet yeah and it would be just when you select her as a character sure you get grand master or whatever like like this magnet doesn't work unless you have her yeah i think that would be awesome that is very cool but yeah i uh oh and i also said that the demogorgons my idea with the demogorgons was almost like uh the aliens from attack from mars just like on the sides as as targets you know they shake oh yeah yeah just have some some sculpts or whatever the demogorgons you know because there's a bunch of them in there Yeah. Second season, I believe. Yeah. Yeah. So, and then you can have that big walking looking thing. Remember in the background of season two, that monstrosity of a monster. Big legs or whatever. Yeah. That in the background somewhere. Ooh. Ooh. Ooh. So anyway, yeah, lots of games coming out in December. Sorry. Tangent. Tangent over. But that whole tangent was to say, I think Spooky would do a really good job with that. Yeah. Yeah. Absolutely. You know, Spooky could do well. JJP would obviously do pretty well with that. I'd like to see JJP do more of a, like, dark pen. I'd like to see American Pinball do a license theme, to be honest. And what do you think that license is going to be? I just wouldn't mind them doing stranger things. Sure, sure. They put so much in their games. They do a good job. They do. Yeah, I agree. I wish they weren't so gun-shy about licensing. You know what I'm saying? Yeah, I think. I don't want to use the word stubborn, but I think they. They have a business model. Yeah, they have their plan kind of mapped out, and that's what they're sticking to. Because then they can put whatever they want in their games. They don't have to worry about license holders. Yeah. You know, I get it. Yeah. That's the number one issue with all these things. So we're hearing it more and more. Right, right. So out of those games, do you have one that stands out in your mind, though, bud? We're going all the way back to. I want to see Guns N' Roses just because Slash is such a huge pinball fan and he's helping out with that. What about you? Do you want to see Elvira 3 just to see what Dennis Nordman kind of came up with? Elvira 3 does pique the interest, but I'm going to go to Scott Danesi's Game 2. I forgot about that one. I don't know what it is. I don't have any insider knowledge. I do know that Eric Kripke was pretty excited about it. Yeah, he was. If you know Eric, he doesn't get excited about much, it seems. He doesn't have that kind of personality. But you know what? You got excited, man. He's pretty proud of this game. He thinks he's excited about it. Hey, Bob, I'd like to change my answer. Scott Danesi's second game I'm looking forward to. That should be good. You think they're going to announce that before the end of the year? I think they'd have to, right? They've got to keep the cadence going, too. Well, yeah, I think they said what? They're wrapping up production on Alice Cooper. They'll be done by October? They should be. That's not right? I'm number 157, and mine's coming soon. So that's out of 500. I mean, they're... Yeah, and I think Charlie even mentioned that they might sell more than the 500. I'm sure they will. They might have a second one. They might get to 600 or something, but... I can't wait until the years. Oh, man. I've been counting down the days. Ooh, this is what it's like to wait for a pinball machine. We don't have to wait, usually. I know. Because some of those, you've got to remember, I guess what they do, I found out recently, if you ordered a butter cab, so you spend that extra $1,000 for the first class ticket, they put those in front of other people. So they actually did a bunch of games that are in the 200s and 300s already because they had the butter cabs. They do those in batches at a time to kind of get those out too. Did you listen to Zach Menny's This Week in Pinball, Jeff Patterson's stream there? I did not. Okay. So they did report that. You're talking about the one from today? Yeah. They reported that the Fang Club that Charlie and Spooky are kind of starting their insider program, they're going to, at least they hinted, I don't know if this has been 100% confirmed. However, what they are doing is they are going to be offering a special version of their games, like a very blinged out version if you're like this Fang Club premium member. I don't know what it all entails, but you get the butter version plus a lot more bling. That's all they kind of describe it. For how much? I don't know what the fan club runs. You can email Charlie at charlie at spookypinball.com. I don't know if that's his email, but you know what I'm saying. That would be one of those things to look into. Because there's those hardcore fans that get every single spooky game. I don't blame them. Well, they have a niche. You know, I looked closer. I've never played Rob Zombie. I looked at it today, and, you know, it's a cool-looking game. But just looking at that as, like, one of their first games compared to what they're doing now. I mean, that was only a couple games ago, right? True. Well, they've technically only made three of their own. If you don't count TNA, they've done Rob Zombie. They did America's Most Haunted. America's Most Haunted was first, then Rob Zombie, and now this. That's it. I know. Ian's got this puzzled look on his face and know that that's the list. Because they did Domino's, they did Jetson's, they did TNA. TNA put them on the map, but that's not technically their game. Yeah, you're right. So anyways, you look at America's Most Haunted, you look at Rob Zombie, and then they did those games in between, so they learned a lot, right? Yeah, for sure. And now you look at Alice Cooper. I guess what I'm saying is I don't want to take anything away from those other games because a lot of people love them and they obviously put a lot of work into them. But Alice Cooper, to me, you could say that another company made it, like a JJP or Stern, and you'd be like, oh, okay. You know, it belongs in that. You know what I mean? It's the real deal. Gotcha. It's just Charlie's designing most of these games. Charlie, they look great. So you're switching to Scott Danesi's second game? then yeah definitely all right scott denisi you got two votes two votes for scott denisi we're not buying two games but you got two votes that's how the poor men do it yeah yeah yeah uh i still want a wonka though still want a wonka you're still i want to still kind of on the fence though i don't know man how much you get for selling blood is marrow more expensive well i got plenty i think you get 10 to 20 bucks so do the math oh my god yeah yeah i'd be drained yeah might lose a lot of weight yeah you lose some weight feel good you know so sleepy yeah but you'll have a wonka you'll look like a vampire ian but just picture it picture the wonka yeah so you you just you every day you wake up and you're like i want a wonka but it's just yeah i hear all these people bitching about it slap save uh slap save they released uh jason fowler was talking to zach many was a guest host and that the title was why i'm canceling my uh i saw that title i didn't i i meant to listen to it and that got my blood boiling and i don't want to turn this into last episode because i know we already talked about it but just for like a minute here and this isn't a rant i just i want to defend no no it's not a rant i want to defend i got my pen i'm pointing i'm like i'm a very aggressive right now yeah this is crazy um um this is fucking nuts this is our pod no nay this is my podcast i am doing what i want i'm just here to edit my editor is standing across from me i'll just be the producer here yeah the producers time we're at time um no i want to defend uh Joe Katz i want to defend um you know pat should we wait until the next segment yeah let's do that actually you know Fuck it, we're done. We're done with that segment. Yeah, yeah. Moving on. Scott Danesi, boom. Scott Danesi, you won that round. They won 2020 early, late 1990s. Scott Danesi. 2019. You won the poor man pinball episode, what is it, 16? 16, baby. 16's game. Is it 16? Yeah, it's 16. It is 16, yeah. Anyway, so that was cool. Good job, Scott. Way to go, Denise. All that work. So can't wait for the Denise Lock in my house, Cooper. So that's a great segue into our – what's the next segment there? Well, we were watching the Flip N Out Pinball stream just before we started recording. It's literally still going on. It's going on. I should probably check in and say, hey. We've been checking in and kind of talking with the guys. So Flip N Out Pinball is doing the stream. Joe Katz is there, the lead programmer. Who else is there? Keith P. Johnson from JJP, Eric Meunier, and Special When Lit, Cannon Bill. They're doing their thing. Yeah, they're all right. They're all right. But anyway, they were just talking about Kaneda came in again and asked about the assets, right? Yes. The assets again. He is obsessed that they don't sync up. Video need to sink. Otherwise, worst pinball ever. Right? Is that basically it? That has been his tirade for the last, what, three weeks? Oh, my gosh. Yeah. When that guy gets stuck on something, he gets stuck on something for sure. And at first, I said, okay. And actually, that's what started the conversation with me and my wife before that Stranger Things ordeal. I was telling her about that, and she looked at me, and we had the same look on our face. And I said, it's good pinball. And she goes, yeah, if it's fun pinball, who gives a shit? Right. Right. And that's the point. So anyways, all that to say, Joe Katz, Pat Lawler, anyone who worked on that game, I think it's a great game. Yeah. I'm pretty confident I'm going to be purchasing one. And, you know, there's always stuff in any game that we could say, oh, I wish this was in there, right? Yes. You know, Monster, I'm looking at Ian's Monster Bash right now. you know it's a nearly perfect game but you could always say well you know yeah maybe the rules are a little deeper you know whatever it is but at the end of the day we play these games and um kudos to jjp and i think i think you guys are on the right track and you know if you guys put some more assets in there great if you don't i'm probably still behind the game so you know you got you got a believer all right he asked about that the uh Joe Katz responded a couple times actually but you know i should have prefaced with that yeah go ahead what did he say it is what it is at this point well no he said it wasn't a asset money thing it was just their no yeah it's not a monetized thing it's a stylistic choice they goes they have the assets yeah he said basically i mean quote unquote you know he did one of these uh it's it's more or less a design choice so when you are playing your game and you're looking down at the field the ball is live it's going everywhere you're starting a mode he didn't feel like it was necessary to play a clip with the audio he thought probably better suited just for the audio so you don't have to look up you know you visually or audio auditorily with your ears whatever word that is yeah listening to stuff with your ears you know you are in the mode you don't have to look up um and then he said you know when he syncs the video with audio or if there's clips that's usually the time when the ball is locked or you know somehow your cradle so they stopped they gave it some thought yeah i mean it was it was a design choice he didn't think that they were gonna go that direction and to all the people whining i'm gonna be that guy go go watch the effing movie if you want to be immersed in the movie Willy Wonka is everywhere on Netflix and all these other places go watch it oh but when I'm playing the game I want to be uh Charlie man go f yourself you don't have to be Charlie Jesus Christ on a stick are you kidding me sorry I that rant rant over on it but I I oh I not done yet yet Okay But you guys can see how I rant I say stupid things I get drunk whatever I talk too much on here. But this one, I'm really upset about, like genuinely upset because there's no need for all the hate. You can like something or not like something. That's fine. Yeah. But good pinball is good. I said this before, and I'll say it. Good pinball is good pinball. Bad pinball is bad pinball. there's not much bad pinball out there right and then by the way and i hate to keep bringing him up but kaneda also he alluded to that he said oh yeah oh you know all pinball's fun and you know you can pick any pick some crappy game and he said you know i can have fun flipping that well then if you can and why are you bitching about these assets in the game then go have fun playing your got leave i don't care that was me throwing my pen down in disgust so okay everybody anything anything else to add to that ian yeah i do uh jason faller you know going back to his podcast i mean his everyone's entitled to their opinion yeah so his reasonings aren't wrong so some of them being the assets he mentioned he some uh he didn't like how jersey jack um told jeff from this weekend pinball that they weren't on the line when they were on the He lied instead of saying no comments, you know? So he didn't like that because he considers Jeff a friend. How do I feel about it? Hey, man, I'm a capitalist at heart. So if Jack wants to fucking lie about it, he can lie. It's his company. But do you think he should have just said, no, I'm not going to listen to that? Oh, yeah. I think looking back, I'm sure Jack probably regrets that. He probably kicked himself. I love Jeff. Everyone loves Jeff. Jeff's a stand-up guy. If Jack said to Jeff, they are on the line, but could you not release that until... Or I don't care to share that with you right now. Yeah, I don't want you to share it with people. Jeff is that guy that would not share. You know what I'm saying? Oh, yeah, he definitely wouldn't. But if it was one of those things, maybe Jeff's LE, that club that they have, maybe the subscribers could get that limited access. That would be kind of cool. But for the most part, yeah, I mean, Jack could have handled it better. but do i care no because it's his company you know what i'm saying sure no he's he's he's entitled to say what he wants jack and do jack and if jackson be weird about it let jack be weird about it it's just bad pr though it is but i would not buy a game because of that you know i'm saying oh no certainly not that's yeah that was the part i thought you know yeah have your conviction about it but you know not buy a game because of it yeah i don't know and then followed in like the art and I think Derek's beautiful. I think it's such a beautiful cab. You know, and a couple more people mentioned that about how it's plain and stuff. I think the play field isn't plain at all. No. You know what? The more I see it, I'm like, it looks good. Yeah, it's a beautiful pin. It's a gorgeous pin. It's Willy Wonka on there with the chocolate bars. And, you know, it's a good-looking, colorful. So, I mean, it's his reasonings, and that's fine. Sure, sure. You know, if he's got a problem, that's his problem. He doesn't like it. That's his prerogative. That's his sole reason. Those are basically his reasons, right? So I get it and I respect that, Jason. You don't listen to this anyway, so it doesn't really matter. Is he not going to buy any JJPs in the future? Was that his? Oh, another one was he. Because that's interesting. He said something about, damn it. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. But I think he's had a problem with JJPs in the past breaking down on him. So he was worried about that too, which you could relate to. Womp womp. Womp womp. But I will say this, though. All those reasonings are fine, but the reason or what really gets me going when I think about that is, here's a guy who bought like a fucking, you know, Black Knight premium. I mean, I don't care for that game. I mean, the premium's a good game. Yeah. But anyone that went to MGC and played Black Knight and played Wonka, I mean, how could you ever come away saying, And they're the exact same price. They're literally the exact same price. This Black Knight is as loaded as that Wonka. It just isn't, dude. It's just not. It's not. And he's sitting there on Facebook, and he's got like a – he made a little topper and shit for it. He's like really pumped. Hey, man, enjoy your game. It's pinball. It should be fun. Enjoy your games, guys. Moral of the story, but to kind of bitch about these things about Wonka, but you're also thinking like, okay, so Black Knight must have great artwork, which I think it's okay artwork. It's not bad artwork. Oh, it's good. Yeah. It's good. I mean, it's not ugly. I mean, I guess Stern never lied to Jeff yet. Zombie Yeti should have done that art, though. I think that would have been like. I think they were trying to go old school with it, reminiscent of the other Black Knights. So if they're all in a row, it kind of all kind of flows together. I think that was the main point of that one. But, yeah, I mean, shit. I'm not here to bitch about Jason Fowler, but I just thought that was kind of weak. I thought it was a little weak. And I think Zach Many agrees with me there. Sure. So we're not talking about Black Knight Art anymore? Well, no. I mean, Black Knight Art is just like... No, I think it's really good. You were just looking at your phone, but I just talked about it. I said it's there for a reason. It's there when you line up all three games. They all look somewhat similar. They're all part of that trilogy. It makes sense. You've got to go old school. You can't have the first two, and then this third one all fucking decked out with zombie art, even though I think Zombie Yeti would do awesome work on it. I was just thinking of his work on Iron Maiden and then put that on a Black Knight. That'd be really cool. To Fowler's point, though, he did make a good point. What could have been? I hate thinking that way. What could have been? But he was talking about the artwork for Wonka and he was kind of saying, it's just so-so. But he was like, imagine if Franchi had that shit. I was like, oh. Fucking Boner City. Sorry. Anytime you're thinking about drawing like regular human beings. Yeah. Franchi. Yeah. You know? You've got a great sense of space too. Guardians of the Galaxy. And Munsters. Scale. You know, that Munsters pin, it's one of the best looking art packages. I mean, just... Yeah. Oh, that's beautiful. Just from a, you know, purely line. It's just, it's beautiful. It's awesome. Yeah. But, you know, that was basically it for that. And that was kind of tough to listen to because you're sitting there and you're kind of screaming at your radio, but that's what makes good podcasting. I mean, hey, everyone's entitled to their opinions. I don't think of Black Knight very favorably at all, but I do think Wonka's amazing. Well, once again, with Black Knight, the only thing I'll say is it's another game that's fun to shoot. Yeah, for sure. Much like Star Wars, much like any Steve Ritchie pin, but it's just lacking in so many other departments. Right. Right. And not so many others. It's just lacking something. Yeah. It's lacking a couple. Maybe it's a nostalgia thing for him, too, though. I think a lot of these Black Knight owners are very nostalgic to the Black Knight series. Anyone who owns a Black Knight pin or they're older like that, they probably think that thing's the best thing they've ever played in their life. Right. Truly. No, it's true. Truly. And that's not a bad thing. And there was something else, and we've touched on it a couple times on our podcast, but I was just thinking about it again today. you know these companies aren't catering to us they're catering to the masses oh sure so whatever that means you know in in a marketing world and we don't have marketing degrees here canada um you know they're they're trying they're trying to sell to everybody yeah so so they're trying to be everything to everybody and that's just not us because we're not everybody we're also outside of that age range you know they're talking yeah that's what that's what i mean though we're not mid-40s yet our demographics and uh you know what we're into and all this stuff stern and honestly doesn't give a shit jjp doesn't give a shit you know about that they're just trying to sell pinball machines so hey i got something to talk about fire when ready all right man this is our show notes but uh the newest rumor for a stern pin have you heard this teenage mutant Ninja Turtles. Where did that rumor come from? No, I haven't heard that. Well, I think it might have came from Canada. But then Jeff Patterson on Twip has put it in the rumor mill now. But now I have to ask, is it old school Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? That's the question. Or cartoon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Those are two very different things. Talking nostalgia, yeah. Even movie, 90s movie, Turtles versus Michael Bay Turtles movie. Yes. You know what I'm saying? For those who don't know, the turtles started in a comic book. Yeah, Zach had no idea. Greg is such a comic nerd. How did he not know that? No, it was Zach and – this is the twip. Oh, okay. Zach and Dennis Creasel. Dennis, okay. Creasel was trying to crack an egg of knowledge on them, but even Creasel was a little fuzzy on it. But, yeah, didn't the turtles have, like, guns and shit? Yeah, they were. It was dark. I believe, and I might be wrong on this because I didn't read them, but I know of them. I think it was called Laird and Eastman. They were black and white comics that were released in the 80s. Yep. And it was a limited series. It was kind of like a homebrew comic almost. Yeah, yeah. They were literally doing that in their garage. They drew them and they inked them and there was no color. And those things are worth a fortune now, by the way. They're literally going for thousands and thousands of dollars. I believe it. Yeah. They're highly sought after. But, yeah. And then from that came the cartoon, which most of us know. And that came out, what, late 80s, roughly? Yeah, I'd say 89. 87, 88. 89, 90, 91, because the movie came out, I think, in 90. Yeah. So it was right in that wheelhouse. Yep. So you have, and by the way, the comics were like super gritty and dark. Right. I swear they had guns. The Turtles did have guns. I think they did. I think they killed people. Yes. No, it was like, it's basically Dark Knight versus regular Batman. i mean it's pretty adam west versus dark knight yeah yeah yeah pretty much pretty hard batman 66 versus dark knight yeah what wins no but that was that was what the turtles were i would i mean yeah i'm in that wheelhouse though i'm i'm 37 i want cartoon about yeah anything less than the cartoon i want nothing to do about like even raw thrills has that four-player arcade machine and it's kind of like the cgi cartoon you know yeah does nothing for me but if they would have done that old school 80s 90s i would have been like fuck yeah yes raw thrills but no i can't can't get behind it man it's just it's my nostalgia showing through i think it would have to be the cartoon though i don't know nothing surprises me no that's true that's very true you know even when like say this this could be a very true scenario you know let's say stern goes to who owns Jurassic Park? I don't even know. Fox? Yeah, whatever. 20th Century Fox. Let's just say. Probably Disney. Yeah. Somehow, someway, Disney owns that now. But yeah, they go to Disney and they say, hey, we want to do a Jurassic Park. Yeah. Disney goes, no, I want you to do our newest Jurassic Park. Yeah. I think that happened with. That's the story, yeah. Didn't that just happen with a pin not too long ago? That they wanted them to do the most recent movie to promote it. and oh yeah i can't remember which one that was yeah and that could be you know part of a the reason why they're doing lost world and the other thing is yeah with turtles whatever is new right now whatever they're trying to promote it might be that might be the turtles i don't know i still think they'd make more money doing the cartoon but but data east did uh did the turtles pinball That was okay, right? Yeah, I've never played that one. Was it Data East? Yeah, I think so. Maybe I'm wrong, but that was from the 90s, early 90s or something. Yeah. Yeah. Maybe it was Gottlieb even. I don't know. All right, let's go to our magical internet machine here. Why not? We have them in front of us. We just never use them. Yeah, it's a whole thing because then I edit it, so it looks like we know everything right off the top of our heads. Data East Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles released in 1991 Pin side rating of a 6.6 6.6 You know somewhere out there That's somebody's grail pin sitting in their house All decked out in green armor $1,900 to $2,200 That seems relatively Okay, that's not too bad I'd pay that just for the artwork Beautiful pin Joe Kamikow That was a game design. Joe Kamikow and Ed Cebula Oh because that was their era Because they also did Kevin O did the artwork That was the Data East era They did Last Action Hero Kevin O just did The Black Knight I think they did Tales from the Crypt Yeah, that was a good era. Kevin O'Connor's been around for a while, huh? Yeah. Well, once again, a lot of these guys in pinball have been. Started in 1978. Jesus. Galaxy Ranger. How old were you in 1978? I wasn't born. I don't even think I was in my dad's nutsack at that point. Anyway, here we go. Let's mailbag, mailbag, mailbag. We got an interesting mailbag this week. Hey, mailbag. Interesting one. What are we doing, Drew? What are we talking about, man? Okay, so what happened was last week. I almost nearly spilled my beer out. Last week, Willy Wonka started a ship, as we know. Yes, yes, yes it did. One of our local pubs here, they actually do quite a bit of pinball. They're known for it. I mean, they usually have two or three games, but they get some of the newest stuff there. It's like a sports bar. Yeah, it's routed. Routed machine. Yep, yep. So somebody posted that Willy Wonka was coming there. So I said, great. And we found out when it was coming. I checked. It was there. So I rushed right there. My wife's like, where are you going? I'm like, I'm going to play Wonka. Same day. Same day. Got there that day. Yes, this was. They set it up that day. Drew got there at like 9 at night. Thanks for clarifying that. Yes. That day. It's an important part of the story. Yes, very important. So it got set up several hours earlier. I walk in. The game is turned off. There's an out of order sign on the game. Oh, bummer. And I was so disappointed. I almost cried. I called Ian. And then a beautiful woman walked by. and I got distracted for a while. He did. Yeah, you just stopped talking. And then... I knew exactly what he was looking at. It was like reading his mind. It was like, dude. Psychic dude. They also had an Oktoberfest there, so I put a few games on Oktoberfest. Oh, that's cool. Having an old-fashioned, which was kind of cool. So that was neat. And then I said, you know what? F it. I'm like, they can't stop me, so I turned it on. Yeah. I'm like, what, are the pinball police going to come and tell me to turn it off? No. Drew's like, I know pinball machines. I know where the power switch is. I said, I'm basically a pinball tech. So I turned it on, right? You're probably going to hit it with a rock. I turned it on first, then I hit it with a rock. Get it right. I thought we were telling the story in chronological order. He's here to fix shit. So anyways. He goes into his trunk. There's a briefcase. In the briefcase, a rock. And a soldering iron, which I don't know how to use. It's never been used. No. He puts solder on the rock and smashes it. Anyway, go ahead. So anyways, so I turn it on. It fires up like any other JJP. It takes a moment. It's going through its thing. And then there's a couple credits in there. So I'm like, awesome. Sweet. Free games. Yeah, free games. So I hit start, and a ball pops out in the trough. And I'm like, cool. And I plunge it. And then another ball pops into the trough. Uh-oh. So I plunge it. So now I got two. And then I make a few shots. And then like 20 seconds later, another ball comes into the trough. So the cool part about this was that when I drained the first ball, the ball kept playing. Like it didn't end the ball. Right. So I'm like, neat. So now I got like I think four balls going. One drained. You want to mark down that time? I got four balls going. Yeah. That's going to be part of it. That'll be 43-56. So I'm making some shots. I'm smiling because I'm seeing this thing light up and I'm having fun. But then I drained all the balls. I drained all the balls. 43, 44, 13. Anyway, so after all the balls drained, it did end the ball. So I'm like, okay, cool. Another ball is going to pop out. Well, that was a thing. It didn't. Trough error. There wasn't an error. It just went into ball search. Yeah, it's still a fucked up trough, though. That's what they call a trough error. Yeah, sure. Well, the one in Sunshine Laundromat, I think, said trough error. But anyways. On a sign. No, maybe it was. Yeah, don't worry. It was trough issues. So anyways. No, it definitely was. So. Canada had the same thing, like you said, in Sunshine. You're having the same shit with your Hobbit. Yeah. Yeah, my Hobbit was doing something similar to that. I got some dude on Facebook telling me how I'm out of my mind crazy and I'm blowing this out of proportion. But it's like a thing. It is a thing. I've heard it from a few people now that trough issues. Another one in. Oh, God. I don't remember where, but there was another trough error. I posted this on our Facebook page, and one guy said, hey, in West Virginia, bingo beer. Shout out to bingo beer, whatever the hell that is. Sounds awesome. You had me at bingo and beer. So anyways, I said, I might want to get this game. I still enjoy it. That three minutes that I played, I'm lying. Those four balls only lasted like a minute and a half. But add that to your list again. No, that's all right. Keep going. So I said, you know what? I said, I'm going to email Jersey Jack himself, Jack Guarnieri. So what I did was, you know, his email, everyone knows it. It's jack at jerseyjackmanball.com. So I emailed him, and it was pretty long. I'm not going to read the whole thing. I told him who I was. I told him about my issues with Hobbit. I told him I really like his games, you know, but I was disappointed about The Hobbit. And then I told him about what happened with Wonka. And, you know, it goes on and on. And I said, I'm sorry for the long post, but I wanted to know about the quality control there and what process they go through to make sure this kind of stuff doesn't happen and what maybe happened. Anyways, the cool thing was, literally within an hour of my email, this is on Friday after the 4th of July, He was on vacation because I saw his thing on Facebook, not on Facebook, Stalking Jack. Yeah, it happens, man. It happens to the best of us. So he was on some beach somewhere celebrating Willy Wonka getting shipped, which I can't blame him. That's awesome. And he emails me back literally within the hour. So I'm like, this is cool. So this is what he says. Thanks, Drew. Sorry you've had some of these experiences. He copied the distributor that I have here. Chris at Kingpin Games has been awesome with me. he was helping me with the Hobbit stuff, and he's just this awesome guy at Kingpin Games. He's been very helpful. Thanks, Chris. Anyways, going on. I can say thankfully it's not in all of our games. You have found the few. We have shipped over 150 Willy Wonka games, so good for them. 150 games went out. And while we are not happy, some will have issues almost immediately. You know, he's talking about how, you know, stuff shakes loose in shipments and yada, yada, yada, which is, you know, standard procedure. I get that. um but then he talked about like sunshine laundromat they always buy new games like as soon as they come out and he brought up a good point which i want to share with everybody which i think is important to remember you know for all manufacturers um so he's talking about early adopters like sunshine know they take a risk with a new production game last time i was there he meaning the owner of sunshine had a couple of new production games from other manufacturers turned off due to problems. We learn from our problems and are very responsive, even as you noted. Thanks. Because I noted how well his tech support was helping me with the Hobbit. Because the one thing I will say is Jersey Jack tech support, they were top notch. And I told them all this. And they're very responsive and they were helpful in trying to get my Hobbit back up and running. So then he went on and it keeps going. During production he talks about their quality control and how they do it and how they don't put a ton of games on a new machine because most people don't want to buy a car with 1,000 miles on it. Now, I just want to stop right there for a second. Ian, if you're buying a new in-box game, do you mind if they put 100 games on it knowing it's going to be perfect, or do you just not want to put that many games on your new in-box game? No, I don't care. Okay, I don't care either. I'm the same way. I know some people do, but some people are crazy about that stuff, I think. Yeah. No, there's nuts. Sure. But me, I was like, yeah, if you've got to play it 100 times to make sure it's perfect, I'm good with that. Yeah. So, anyways, that was a different story. Put that shit on the quality control train, baby. Yep. Yep. So, anyways, I talked to him how my wife might not want to buy it anymore because we don't want to have these issues if we bring home a brand new game. he assured me you know that distributors like chris at kingpin who is fantastic you know he'll make sure it gets right they'll make sure it gets right so all that so anyways all that to say um that you know i think jack's gonna get it right and then he did tell me that they found that like i said the issue of the few they did fix it so going forward that issue will not be an issue anymore there we go that's what i was waiting for yeah no it's it's coming it just it's okay He wrote this email. It was like three pages long. Yeah, that's quite a bit. So I don't want to bore you with too much more. But anyways, he did good. Jack Guarnieri. Jersey Jack pinball. I mean, you know, like I said, I'm still in. Well, the trough issues, do you know what they were? Did he even explain what they were? So I pushed like I like to do. And I was drinking when I do this, as I often do. and uh i i sent him one one more response after that and i said hey so the one thing you didn't tell me in this email is what was the issue well he wouldn't tell me what the issue is no he he just said that the problem was the problem it was fixed it's resolved you know there's no real so what does that mean for your hobbit well the hobbit's getting traded i know but don't you want to fix it and before you trade it just to play it for more it's working fine now again this week okay all right all right well fuck it okay we won't touch it then i put i put i put 30 games on it this week and i played just fine all right it's crazy all right well that'll do it man let's wrap it up wrap around on the music yeah yeah all right well thank you everybody thank you guys for listening to this shit uh episode number 16 in the books drew how do you feel i feel good as always all right uh email us at poor man's pinball at gmail.com and uh tell us what you think about the upcoming long game of games that are coming the bottleneck it's a good time to be into pinball guys let us know if we missed one or let us know if you think that we were wrong on one and we'll we'll uh do our best to fix that insider information yep and like us on facebook well i feel good about this episode you feel good about this episode it was an episode Well thank you everybody for listening You guys have a great day Thanks guys, peace Bye bye We'll be right back.
