Well, it's that time of year again. It's time for Pinball Expo 2023 in Schaumburg, Illinois. This is my third year in a row attending Expo, and it is without a doubt my favorite show of the year. And it's the one I look forward to the most. But why? Well, you're probably expecting me to say because there are so many exciting announcements this year, like Labyrinth from Barrels of Fun, or Stern with Venom, or Jersey Jack announcing Elton John. And while all of that is awesome, and we'll get into that a little later, that's not what makes Expo special. Let me explain. Expo is special because some of my closest friends attend this show every year as well. We assemble from all across the country to meet up, enjoy each other's time, and just play lots and lots of pinball. We talk, we laugh, we play, but we also disconnect from everything during those few days. We also join and unite with a tribe of people from all over the world. Pinball Expo brings in people from literally everywhere. It's THE show, so you never know who you're gonna meet, from your favorite pinball designer to someone you regularly watch on YouTube. Literally everyone is here and we're all celebrating something that we love. Alright, well we're here, people are flowing in, so let's check out some of the new games that Expo has to offer. The hype and excitement around a new pinball manufacturer called Barrels of Fun has completely taken over the show floor. Why? Because their very first game is themed after a cult classic movie from 1986 called Labyrinth. If you're around my age, you may remember it from your childhood. You probably watched it many, many times, so that's pretty exciting. The lines to play it never died down the entire weekend, and most that played it really enjoyed it. I'd say the overall playfield design and layout is fun to play, and the cabinet itself is packed with features typically only found on Stern Premium or limited edition games. So I wish nothing but the best for Barrels of Fun. Let's hope this game sells well and we look forward to what you do next. With only one game down, I'm already starting to get hungry. It's time to rally the troops and grab something to eat. We're in the Chicagoland area, so it's natural that we would pick Giordano's. Giordano's. Giordano's. Giordano's. I'm Italian. How can I can't say this. Geo... Danos? I don't know. Hey, Dano, how you doing? Well, I'm not really a deep dish pizza fan. Being from the East Coast where we have our floppy, greasy pizza, I do still have a certain appreciation for what I would call cake pizza. Don't hate me. That's just what I call it. It was great to break away from the crowd, though, at Expo and enjoy each other's company. I only get to see these guys like once a year, so it's important to take time to catch up with everyone. Meeting up with friends and making new ones is really what makes going to these events special. Sure, the games at Expo make it fun, but the friendships and connections that we've made over the years make Expo truly special These guys have all become really good friends of mine And I gotta say if it weren for Expo or events like this I don know if we would have ever met and if these friendships would have ever happened So that to me what makes Expo fun and that better than any arcade or pinball machine could ever be. Lunch was great, but I'm ready to head back to Expo and play some more games. With Elton John lines being absolutely insane, I decided to check out Pulp Fiction. As a big fan of the movie, I figured that would be a safe bet. Playing a game where the theme speaks to you is a big part of pinball. Pinball machines span generations, so there's really a theme for everyone. But theme isn't everything. The game needs to shoot well and have a fun layout. And man, I think Pulp Fiction delivers. But this isn't your typical modern pinball machine. You won't find a big LCD display on the back. In fact, you'll find an old-school-looking alphanumeric display that brings you back to the 70s. 70s. So if you're more of a fan of modern pinball, you might not like this one, but give it a shot anyway. I think it might surprise you. I had one of my best games on this actual machine. I played one ball for about 15 minutes. I was so excited about that. And I'm probably more of an intermediate pinball player. So having a single ball last 15 minutes is not something that happens very often. Pulp Fiction is one I could totally see owning one day. Now to find $9,000, that's a little tough. and man, this hobby is super expensive. Maybe I'll find it locally on pinball maps and experience it that way. I think the first ones are shipping out soon, so be on the lookout for it at your local arcade or arcade bar. You know, I tried really hard this year to put the camera down and focus on playing games and just enjoy the show with friends, but I did have a few commitments. The first was a Q&A panel with Bob Rose, the producer of Token Taverns, and I was completely caught off guard with an awards ceremony with Walter Day recognizing me for my contributions to the hobby. That was a super honor for me and while I never expected anything like this I really appreciate it and it was really awesome to be recognized in that way by not only Walter but my peers. It was also special to share that moment with Bob Rose who I've become good friends with over the years. Such a cool moment and it was for sure a highlight of the event for me. It was hard to top that but Saturday night I participated in another panel and we had a ton of fun with it. I was pretty excited to be sharing the stage with powerhouses like Emoto, Todd, Matt Frank, and Arcade Hollywood. We talked about the state of the hobby and what it's like to be a content creator in this space. We really had a lot of fun with it, and I hope to be able to do something similar with this crew again next year. As I was coming back from the sessions, I bumped into a lot of fans of the channel, and I really enjoyed meeting everyone and making some new friends along the way. Being a content creator is fun, but it can be lonely when you're sitting in a room by yourself talking to a camera. So meeting people who appreciate the content and share in the passion of the hobby that you do is really awesome and it's really uplifting to see that the content that I make brings joy to so many people. At the end of the day, that what makes it worth putting in the time We do this because it fun It an escape from the trials and tribulations of everyday life So meeting and talking to everybody really helped me pump up my spirits and solidify the real reason why I do this Getting back to the show floor now, there's so much to see. It can be a bit overwhelming. There's vendors everywhere selling accessories for pinball, parts, and everything in between. And while the show is a hardcore pinhead show, you never know what you'll stumble upon. I've seen this before at Amusement Expo, but the Ice Cold Beer booth was pretty busy the entire weekend. This is a full reproduction unit with modern technology that's licensed by Tato. The brainchild behind it is Brian Armitage, the owner of Paradise Arcade. The product looks beautiful and completely captures the essence of the original. So much so, you'd be hard-pressed to notice any differences between them. And apparently Mason is addicted to it and pretty damn good at it too. Come on, Mason. We have work to do. Stop playing around. Alright, moving on. Virtual pinball is not something John Youssi much of at this show. People here in my opinion want to play good old fashioned mechanical pinball machines. But AtGames was there featuring their new Legends 4KP virtual pinball machine. The featured game was Adam's Family and well, all I can say is it was not ready for primetime. Although company representatives were making people aware of this, that the software was in early stages, and that it would be improved when the final release was out. But I feel like that's a miss to come to a show like this with an audience like this and not put your best foot forward. However, I did play some of the optimized games, and they played a lot better and highlighted some of the new haptic feedback features. And for the budget, it's not a bad offering. Although the games they featured didn't really have any recognizable IP to them. So I'm not sure about the overall appeal of these titles, especially for a crowd like this one that's used to playing the latest, hottest games with major IPs from Stern, Jersey Jack, and others. But I gotta say, for the amount of money you spend on a device like this, it might be a cool entry into someone that wants to get into pinball, but they're not really wanting to make the investment of an expensive mechanical machine. The Stern booth was crazy the entire time, and obviously Venom was the game people were most interested in playing. All the games were connected to Wi-Fi so you could use your Insider Connected account, and they had a local leaderboard dedicated to the show floor machines. I was surprised with the recent announcement of Stranger Things getting a rerun that they didn't bring any with them, but I don't think it mattered since all people seemed to care about was getting their hands on Venom. Venom's kind of growing on me. It's fast, it's frantic, and the fact that you can save your progress as you advance through the game is unique and something that I really never saw on any other pinball machines to date. I love that Stern keeps finding ways to leverage the Insider Connected features, and I look forward to see what they're gonna do with the technology in the future. The rumor on the floor was that Jaws is gonna be the next Stern game. Now I didn't see any references to Jaws there, but supposedly we're gonna hear something about that between now and the end of the year. Moving on to American Pinball, they had quite the booth showcasing their games, but the one that was front and center was Galactic Tank Force It been out for a while but there been some controversy about it from almost all media outlets Honestly the storyline quirky it kinda weird and maybe in a way it doesn't even make much sense, but that's what I think is pretty awesome about it. There have been some quality issues with the game, and I think that's what's led to its rather lukewarm response, but the machines at the show seem to be working better than the first time I played the game, so hopefully the issues are behind them and they can move on from that. To add to the draw of the booth, they had the full cast of the game there on Saturday, signing autographs and just doing a meet and greet. That was a nice touch and it did help to keep a steady flow of people in and out of their booth on Saturday. They also had a Galactic Tank Force Limited Edition that was retrofitted with some kind of wheels and a motor so they could drive it around the show floor. That was pretty badass and a neat way to market their latest pin. I really enjoyed my time playing Galactic Tank Force. I know it had a bad rap, but I think in some ways it was a bit unjustified. justified. It's quirky, yes, and it has some initial quality issues, but I had fun with it, and that's what pinball is all about. Anyway, there's a lot more to see, but hopefully this gives you a little glimpse into my experience at Pinball Expo 2023. It's my favorite show of the year, and next year will be their 40th anniversary. So if you didn't make it this year, consider coming next year because rumor on the street is that it's going to be even bigger and even better than it was this year, if you can believe that. A huge shout out to the Burke family. They really know how to put on a show, so great job. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this video. Please comment below and let me know what you think about Expo, and I will catch you on the flip side. What's going on, guys? It's Mason. I know this is totally random. I know I don't normally come onto this channel and talk, but we're gonna do that for a second. So I have an announcement, but I also just wanna say, I've worked with Ralph for like five years almost now, and this channel has totally exploded compared to where it started. And I just want to say thank you to all the people that are watching that have supported Ralph and his endeavors this entire time. Working with him is just such a joy, and I really hope everybody continues to find value in his content and enjoys it. He's such a fun guy, and it's just been an adventure. So, Ralph, thank you, too.
