TL;DR

Tee'd Off's underwhelmed first impressions of Jersey Jack's Toy Story after 2-year wait despite acknowledging strong build quality.

Summary

Host Tee'd Off provides first-impression analysis of Jersey Jack Pinball's newly revealed Toy Story pinball machine, offering cautiously critical commentary after two years of anticipation. While acknowledging positive aspects (Pat Lawlor design, vibrant art, hot rails lighting, Jersey Jack build quality), he expresses disappointment with the overall execution, particularly regarding missing major character licensing (Woody, Buzz, Tom Hanks) and general game appeal to hardcore players. He predicts strong sales to families and location operators despite his personal lack of enthusiasm, and emphasizes the need to play the game before final judgment.

Signals

  • ?

community_signal: Host planning roundtable discussion stream with other community figures (Jonathan Hall) same evening as episode release to discuss game

high · I think we're doing a Twitch stream tonight with Jonathan Hall. We'll be having a little roundtable discussion... I think we're doing that around eight o'clock Eastern... J-Hall sucks at pinball. Check him out on Twitch.

  • ?

design_philosophy: Host expresses disappointment with overall game layout and execution despite acknowledging strong fundamentals; particularly critical of missing major character licensing (Woody, Buzz) that defines the Toy Story IP

high · I'm left a little bit shocked with what appears to be or actually not be in this game and how they kind of laid it out... If it was like the first or the second movie and it had some of that Toy Story magic in it, I would definitely be in on it. But as it looks right now, it's just not something that's going to appeal to me.

  • ?

licensing_signal: Licensing constraints significantly impacted Toy Story game design; major characters (Woody, Buzz, Tom Hanks, Tim Allen) unavailable due to cost, forcing Jersey Jack to rely on secondary content

high · I'm sure that a lot of it has to do with licensing... Woody and Buzz and Tim Allen and Tom Hanks were not going to be a part of this just based on cost. I'm not really surprised there and I don't fault Jersey Jack Pinball because they're a business.

  • $

market_signal: Host predicts strong sales volume despite personal lack of enthusiasm, with extended production timeline suggesting manufacturer confidence in demand

medium · I think they're still going to sell a lot of units... They're going to be making them for at least the next year, maybe a year and a half, maybe two years. So I think they will sell a bunch.

Sentiment

mixed(0.4)— Tee'd Off attempts balance between acknowledging Jersey Jack's manufacturing excellence and design competency while expressing clear personal disappointment with the game's execution and theme licensing limitations. Criticism is measured and takes care not to condemn the product entirely, but underlying tone reflects unmet expectations after two-year anticipation.

you've got a friend in me you've got a friend in me when the road looks rough ahead and you're miles and miles from welcome ladies and gentlemen to the poor man's pinball podcast this is episode 121 we are going to talk toy story in less than two short hours the official reveal will be here there have been lots of teasers there have been some leaked photos thank you kaneda's pinball podcast for always being the source of those leaked photos of all those leaked things that we have in the pinball world where would we be without kaneda i kid i kid i kid but but seriously folks let's um let's get right into it let's talk about what I think about Toy Story. I am looking at it now and I'm scratching my head a bit. I think there's a lot of confusion. There's a lot of, ooh, I hate to say it, disappointment in the pinball world today. Here, let's start with some positive things. I don't want to, you know, make this podcast a negative downer um it's it's it's new pin day right and new pin day is always a great day so let's let's focus on some really positive things and then we'll get into a little bit more of the scathing uh critiques because you know no one's played it yet no one's seen it yet and that is fair i i do firmly believe you know there's been a lot of people that that's that's what they hang their hat on they say hey you gotta play it first and i firmly firmly believe that however I think with all the hype that there has been and you know we've been waiting for this for literally two years so I think that plays into it as well I mean two two full years of something that we heard and you know when you hear these themes and you get really excited because it's a theme that you relate to I mean who doesn't love Toy Story you know a lot of people say well it's just a kiddie theme and this and that but you know what Toy Story has been around for over 20 years and people grew up with it. Tim Lee talks about him and his wife. That was one of their first dates and they've seen like every single one. So I think that kind of stuff's fantastic. So it kind of transcends generations from a theme perspective. And I think that's a wonderful thing for pinball. But also therein lies the problem because now we're so excited, we're so hyped up and then we see it and like I said, a little bit of a letdown. But once again, let's go back to the positives It a Jersey Jack game It going to be built well I sure It a Pat Lawler design so I fairly confident it going to shoot well You know looking at it the art is vibrant They use the hot rails like they did on Guns N Roses which I think is fantastic So we got we going to have this amazing lighting Bye bye Penn Stadium I guess we don need you anymore So in short they they did quite a few things right at least from the get-go. You know, it's, it's a Jersey Jack package. It's got that beautiful 27 inch TV screen in the backbox and they have a fairly large LCD on the play field. um but this just in i just just saw the teaser video uh from youtube and oof um i can't sugarcoat it um once again i'm not going to give a scathing review based on a short little teaser and some photos. However, I was excited for this game to be revealed, and I kind of downplayed that a little bit because I am a pretty big Toy Story fan. But, you know, I'm left a little bit shocked with what appears to be or actually not be in this game and how they kind of laid it out. And I'm sure I am sure that a lot of it has to do with licensing. You know, we all knew that Woody and Buzz and, you know, Tim Allen and Tom Hanks were not going to be a part of this just based on cost. So I'm not really surprised there. And I don't fault Jersey Jack because they're a business and they need to make those kind of decisions. And with all that being said, I'm also sure they're going to sell a lot of these. You know, kids are going to love this thing. OK, kids are absolutely going to love this thing. It's going to be a great pin for the family. But for a guy who, you know, I have pinball friends, I am mostly here by myself playing pinball. It's just not going to be that type of game for me. If it was like the first or the second movie and it had some of that Toy Story magic in it, I would definitely, definitely be in on it. But as it looks right now, it's just not something that's going to appeal to me. And that's okay because, you know, sometimes some things appeal to other people. And pinball, much like everything else in life, is very subjective. So I'm not mad at anybody. And once again, I haven't played it. And I'm not sure, you know, how it's going to end up. And I would like to get in front of one, get some time on one. But just as far as overall pinball excitement, I'm not feeling it. I do have a Mandalorian Premium coming today. It's actually coming in about 20 minutes. so I'm really excited about that and once again there's all this great pinball out there so you know we can get upset about this or we can just say hey it's not for me and and move on but you know that's not why we're here you guys want to hear some opinions I mean you know everyone watches the news for opinions these days news is dead there no such thing as facts in the news anymore and and pinball content no different we all have different opinions I sure some people are going to hail this as the greatest game of all time um they be wrong unfortunately um that was sorry that that was rude that was mean i'm not taking it out but yeah i shouldn't have said that um but once again let's let's wait let's see um you know see see what some gameplay looks like. Maybe this carnival thing with the games and the LCD screen. Maybe they'll excite us with a couple more things that we haven't seen yet, which is fine. But yeah, this is just kind of first impressions, what I saw. I was a little underwhelmed. Once again, I do think it's a great Jersey Jack package. I do think the layout is fine. I'm sure it's going to shoot well. Once again, Pat Lawler is really good at making games that shoot well, some interesting shots. But just overall, the excitement isn't as high as it's been on some other titles. But we will wait and see. And once again, with all that being said, I just want to thank all the people at Jersey Jack Pinball because they do what a lot of other people can't. and that is get games in boxes and get them to consumers. So once again, my overall thing, I don't want to poo-poo on everything. I don't want to say this is a disaster because I don't think it is. It's not for me, but I will say that, yeah, thank you for getting games into the world. Thank you for getting games into boxes for consumers. And once again, you know, the kids and the families, I think it's going to go over really well. I think they're still going to sell a lot of units. my original prediction about them selling out in an hour. I don't think with the diehard pinheads that's necessarily going to happen on this one. But I do think it's going to be a pretty good seller. I think ultimately they're going to sell them for a long time. They're going to be making them for at least the next year, maybe a year and a half, maybe two years. So I think they will sell a bunch. They'll go on location to a few places. It is obviously a little more, I can't even be kind there. It's a lot more expensive than a Stern Pro. However, it would make a great, great game for location. And once again, I think the family fun centers and that kind of thing, it's, you know, kids love Toy Story, kids love toys. So, you know, I just wish we could have some more licensed stuff in there. But once again, I get it. You know, Disney is the giant and they can kind of dictate what they want. And, you know, they set the rents as they say, and, you know, it is what it is. So, you know, let's wait and see what happens. I know I said that three or four times, but we're just going to have to wait and see. And, you know, that's all I have for now. I will report back. I think we're doing a Twitch stream tonight with Jonathan Hall. We'll be having a little roundtable discussion. I don know if we still doing that I really hope we are So J Hall sucks at pinball Check him out on Twitch I should have this up actually in a few minutes so then we can you know you guys will kind of hear it and hopefully you guys will join us tonight. I think we're doing that around eight o'clock Eastern. If we're not, I'm sorry, but we will get to it. But either way, I think J-Hall is doing something on his stream tonight. So J-Hall sucks at pinball. Check him out on Twitch. also don't forget to check out Tribe Multiball with Rachel and Tim always a good time, we had them on episode 120 that was fantastic and we just released a surprise episode from the mastermind Glenn the skateboarder Tribe member number 7, that was funny he did a funny take on Toy Story as a pinball machine so check it out, it's really funny good round table discussion there as always we love good pinball here at the poor man's pinball podcast poor man's pinball network we are sponsored by flipping out pinball if you do want to buy a new pinball machine check with zach and nicole flipping out pinball they are always here to help you out for all you guys who want toy story call them up today the order banks are opening up soon probably around the time i get this uploaded so zach and nicole also thank you to pinballprices.com Dr. Mane for always, always, always being such a great supporter of the National Football Network.
