Hey, what's going on, Pinball Land? Welcome. It's a special edition of Flippin' Out Pinball Podcast. Today, we've got a new release. With me is Greg Bone. How are you, Greg? What's going on? Oh, man, I am so excited. And listen, normally I try to open up stuff with a little bit of, you know, I don't know, I like to do a little character voice or something. But there's just no way in hell that I'm opening this up because there's no way that I can do Jeff Hayes and all of his characters, no matter who I tried to do any justice at all. So I'm just leaving it where it is. Well, and you note Jeff Hayes, who is the narrator of the audiobooks for the famed licensed Dungeon Crawler Carl. It's the newest release from Multimorphic on the P3 platform. Today, we're going to give you our first look, kind of our first impressions of the title. This was a rumored title that had been kicked around for, I don't know, Greg, I want to say six months, maybe almost a year. People were wondering, you know, it's kind of fresh though. Yeah, yeah, at least six months. I mean, that's kind of when it really popped up on my radar, maybe a little past that. But, you know, it was something that kind of took me by surprise because I just, you know, initially, you know, going into this, I hadn't really heard of it. I was like, well, what the hell is Dungeon Crawler Carl? Carl, and then you started hearing a little bit more about it, and you kind of saw the fanboys, you know, that it's got, you know, kind of a cult following behind it. And I was like, I'm going to have to look into this. Oh, my God, am I glad I did.
1:27
Yeah, you're really into it, and I love that. I mean, can you give, for somebody that maybe is still kind of new to this, and we're going to get into the game here in a second, I mean, can you give, like, kind of a brief synopsis? What's the story of Dungeon Crawler Carl? What's the allure? And why does it seem like this fan base is growing exponentially as of late?
1:49
So I'm no expert over Dungeon Crawler, Carl. Again, it's fairly new to me, that sort of thing. So I can't speak in depth, but basically, and I don't want to ruin anything for anyone as well. I want to try to give you enough information real quick that hooks you and makes you understand it, but without giving anything away. Right. So so basically the entire premise is that aliens have came in this. This is the bad thing. I hate explaining it like this because it sounds hokier and dumber than what it is because it's actually phenomenal the way everything is executed. But so aliens are coming. It's like it sounds like it might be real life. So but go ahead. I know. I know. So the aliens come. They eradicate like most people that are inside their homes. They basically blow up their homes. And if you're left out somewhere else outside of your home, like Carl himself was outside chasing his cat, Princess Donut. And those people are then left. It's almost like a rapture type event. And those people are left and they have to compete in almost like a running man. If you guys ever remember the book Running Man or Running Man with Arnold Schwarzenegger in it, almost like this gauntlet type challenge. And it's all subterranean. But here's where things are super interesting is the aliens have kind of taken what they know of Earth and what people on Earth do and they've kind of captured and embraced the video game aspect of it. So essentially they're making real humans and real life people go through almost like an RPG. Like you have a mana that you can spend and buy things like you have, like, I won't say telepathically, but it like kind of pops up in behind your eyes, almost like a virtual reality type thing. And it'll show, you know, different loot boxes and crates and things that you can open up with surprises in it. And, you know, you build rewards and stats and all that stuff. So you're, it's almost like the true life people, like I said, are playing an RPG. So, you know, that's where, like, the interesting thing about this coming out on the P3 platform is, is with the giant monitor, the playfield monitor, everything else, like, you're really able to encompass that whole thing within Dungeon Crawler Carl because of those aspects. Because you take a traditional pinball machine, which I love and I won't say that I don't prefer, but it's hard to do those things, even on your head LCD. You know what I'm saying? It'd just be real hard to make you feel like you're in that world. And I think that that's what the capability of this Multimorphic P3 machine is going to be able to do, is it's really going to be able to encompass the world of Dungeon Crawler Carl. When we get into the game specifics again, Multimorphic, it's on the P3 platform. We're going to go down the list of who's involved in this game and we'll go into our impressions of the game. We were invited into a distributor meeting with Multimorphic last week, so we have some of the assets as far as the photos go. And then we were also shown the gameplay video, so we have an idea of how it plays. Creative director on this game, Steven Silver and Ian Harrower. Rules is by Wesley Johnson. Then voice overwork is Jeff Hayes, and he's a narrator of the book. So I assume you're taking some of the narration from the books, but also brand new voice callouts from Jeff Hayes. And from what I understand, the audio books are so popular because of his voice overwork, and he does a lot of the characters.

Well, so, you know, I was going to say that earlier when we first discussed Jeff Hayes. That is the format for everybody. If you're not familiar with Dungeon Crawler Carl and you're listening to this, the number one thing that I was told when I started exploring it was don't read the books. Listen to the books because of Jeff Hayes. And I think that that I mean, they're marvelous books. I think if you were to stand alone and you were to read these, they would be phenomenal still. But I think Jeff Hayes and that voiceover and all because it's not just reading of the book like he is narrating it from almost like a script. You almost listening to an old time radio show to where he is voicing every character individually with a very distinctive very different voice that you would just never know is coming from one human being So you know I think that he is part of what has elevated this to be the brand the franchise and IP that it is is truly coming from that man magnificent talent You know, mixed with the author. The author of the series is Matt Dinneman. For those of you that are looking to research that. You've got music and sound design, Matt Kern, software, Ian Harrower, Josh Coogler. Michael Ocean, Josh Coogler. Good familiar name to see back into the wing over there. Absolutely. Cabinet artist Luciano Fletes. Now, I could be saying that incorrectly. He is the book cover artist. So, again, another person that's heavily involved in the franchise has crossed over to participate and to lend his talents for the release of the pinball machine, which I think is pretty cool. The playfield artist on this game is Brad Albright. Art direction, Steven Spielberg. Wouldn't that be something? Wouldn't that be amazing? Steven Silver and Brad Albright. Sculpts are done by Stumbler, Pinball, the digital assets, Renegade Game Studios. Animations by Steven Silver and Ian Harrower. So the first thing that, I don't know, we're not going to deep dive this. This is a first look. We were given a first look. We're going to share our impression on first look. I think the follow-up podcast when the games come out will be fun to kind of get on it and play it. But when you saw the assets that were offered to us, what was it that initially stood out to you that you were like, holy cow, this is actually – because we both walked away from this with very positive vibes. Like we didn't know what to expect going into it. I was pleasantly pleased. Two things, man. I think that's going to stand out the most to anybody as soon as you step up and you see this or for you that have already seen it, obviously. I mean, you have this gigantic rotating, like, I don't know if it's Plexiglas or whether they use, oh, shit, what's the polycarbonate on there? But it's a giant, like, multi-leveled clear spinning disc to the, like, middle left of the playfield that can divert the ball and do multiple things. So obviously that thing stands out, has this, like, badass, you know, light-up spinning ring in it. And this disc can spin 360 degrees. It can go all over the place. There's multiple things that can be done with this crazy disc in the super. Well, and it can travel the playfield, too, which is weird, right? Because it's not like you're playing a game where there's a three-inch spinning disc in the middle. I mean, this thing moves, so it can go up and down. It can go left and right from a pivot. I've never seen anything like it. It took me a minute to figure out what I was looking at. And I still don't know what I'm looking at. That's fair.
    9:01
I cannot wait to get my hands on it because it's so hard to decipher the ball paths and what can be done. And, you know, obviously we can't tell how it's completely utilized within code. But I do know that, you know, it obviously changes and allows for particular shots and some shots that you can only access through that and everything else. So pretty damn wicked. Number two thing, man, I think that's just beautiful that I think that we've just been clamoring for on P3 Games. It's just that massive like safe room sculpt, the dungeon safe room sculpt, the dungeon sculpt up top. Like that thing is just gorgeous and just I mean, it's encompassing. It is what you I feel at least when I envision Dungeon Crawler Carl. So, I mean, that that top module just stands out like crazy. Honest to God, those are the two things that stood out to me the most. One was just the detail sculpts and the world that's built up on the upper third of the playfield is ridiculous. I mean, it's really, really well done. You can tell a lot of time and effort went into it. It's a craftsmanship painting. It's what you would expect coming out of the books or the series, I believe. And then again, that rotating radial kind of spinning this arm where, you know, the ball can be guided underneath that, that that spinning disc or that disc. It can be guided on the top of the disc. It's going to be very hard to take this in on an audio podcast. The reason we don't have a lot of visuals is that we don't have access to the launch video right now. The launch video was shared with us over a like a Zoom meeting and it was in private. We weren't allowed to to take that with us. So when the launch video comes out, I think it'll be fun for us to kind of be able to share that information in a like a visual form. But for now, we're going to do the best we can audio wise. But that was absolutely impressive. If you go to flipping out pinball dot com right now, we'll have the photos there. And I'm sure if you go to our Facebook, there's we've already shared the launch video so you can go. You love the trailer. We're recording this. Yeah, pull up the trailer and check it out. And then and then see if you can wrap your head around it. Because again, I saw it twice and I'm smiling because it's like, I think I know what I'm seeing. Take it for what it's worth. But, you know, the company founder, Jerry Stellenberg over at Multimorphic P3, he's been doing everything that he can to innovate pinball and bring it into a more advanced state, you know, for probably going on 10 years at this point. And he says of all the mechs that they've done, and Multimorphic's done a lot of intuitive mechs, he says that this one is his favorite mech of all time. Like, not just within the Multimorphic company, but again, take it for what it's worth. But I tend to believe him because, I mean, he just wouldn't have to bring it up. But, you know, that's just me. I agree. And looking at it, it does. It looks pretty insane, you know, with a lot of stuff here. You know, so here's the thing, Ken. Like, when I heard that it was multimorphic doing it, I'm just not – I've played a couple of their games on there, just not super familiar with it, you know, because it's just not a traditional pinball machine. Like we said it sort of like a badass combination of a truly physical pinball machine mixed with a virtual pinball machine just because of the things that can be done on the play field You don have traditional play field art on the the lower you know two thirds or so It a giant LCD screen that can display and change you know literally change your play field art and paths and everything else and shots that you would want to do So I wasn't, I won't say that I was wild about it, but, you know, back to your point of like you saying about when we saw this, a smile was on my face. Like all of that nervousness about it being on the P3 platform has gone away because it looks so damn good. And like I said, like the platform just lends itself to this title so well that that I am now, you know, went from some hesitation to just pure excitement on this, you know. And again, I know some things in the past, people wanted more sculpts. They wanted it to look more like a traditional pinball machine too. And back to that, it has done that. Not just the dungeon itself and the safe room, but you have a cool-ass princess donut sculpt over there. On the other side, you have Mongo, the raptor over there. He looks wicked, painted very nicely. You got Samantha, the possessed doll head. And this is for people who are somewhat familiar with it. But she's got a nice sculpt up over there to the left. So a lot going on with that. And then another cool feature, Ken, and again, this is another one of those things just like that spinning disc that I don't think we'll fully know how it's utilized and how it's going to be utilized until we see some gameplay. We know enough about it. But there's like this, I don't know how to explain it. It's these stacks, I think is what Jerry called them, like a left and right stack. And if you look at that part of the dungeon on the left and right, it holds balls up and down, like vertically. And one side is your mana. So for those of you who played Magic the Gathering or anything else, you cast mana and so forth to be able to utilize certain weapons. You have to have enough of it to be able to do that. So those balls stacked up, you know, that is what represents your mana. And on the other side, I can't remember what it is, but basically the balls, like there's a coil that will eject the ball. So let's just say you've got a stack of five or six balls over here that are in the dungeon portion and you gain two mana. Then, you know, the balls can literally leap over and be shot over into the other stack, to like the left-handed stack. So now you have two mana sitting in there with two physical balls, and those balls can hop back and forth between the two stacks. So what do you think about the art, Ken? I know that you're not super familiar with, you know, the IP itself, but how do you like that art? You know, on the back glass, you've got Carl Sculpt too. I don't know how, like, I wouldn't have been talking about that. Yeah, the Carl Sculpt is there. The art, it's artwork, it's, I'm trying to figure out what kind of artwork. It's kind of this weird fantasy artwork. It's different. I think what I'm noticing about this whole thing is that it's different. Like the premise of the book's different. It's got some grit to it. It's different. The voiceover stuff that you're hearing in the audiobooks and the calls that are going to be in the machine, they're different. And I'm thinking to myself, if I'm a fan of the franchise at all, and if pinball is something that's on my radar, I can see where this would be a very eclectic, cool piece that will look nice in your home, is interactive with the book series. Because, I mean, how often do you have that? And it'd just be kind of a showpiece because you're playing all eight books on this game. And that's a lot of content. I think Jerry said, you know, they don't have all eight coded right now. He said it's going to be deep. One of the deepest games ever developed. Right.
    16:25
That's insane to me. So I guess I'm excited in the sense that it just feels different. And pinball is very familiar.
    16:34
When I say it feels different, it doesn't mean that the P3 platform is different. And it is different in the sense that it's pinball. But again, like you said, it's 27 inch LCD on that lower side of the square, lower end of the playfield. It allows for changing of environments. But it's, you know, I think there's been kind of a running narrative where people are looking for something else to complement what they have.
    17:01
And the first time a game comes out, it seems like people are always comparing that. Well, this this layout reminds me of this game and and I can see how they repurpose this from this game and they put it in here. And, well, I'm kind of getting sick of this type of a theme of a game that's coming out. Well, guess what? I mean, this is probably as different as you're going to get on a new release. And I think that'll be refreshing for some. I think it will feel a little bit outside of the box for others where maybe they never warm up to it. Maybe over time they do. I mean, our position here isn't to convince you one way or the other. I get I'm walking away from it, not knowing what to expect when I went in. And I am pleasantly surprised and happy with what I've seen. Well, and Ken, I think that if you're a lover of toys, I mean, we've had that become an issue as of late. People have complained, well, why doesn't this toy do this? And why don't we have this going on? And, well, we don't have enough toys. It's just shots.
    18:00
I think that you're going to be pleasantly surprised with this. You know what I'm saying? Like I said, like that big giant spinning disc in there, you know, those up stacks that are bouncing the balls back and forth. You know, you've got the drop target in the middle of the, you know, the shot into the dungeon and so forth. You've got the, you know, Mongo Raptor over there. It's like a pit type thing that it looks like there's like a stand up, some sort of stand up targets in the front. Then he almost like raises up like the trunk of a car. And then there like a horseshoe of stand targets behind that that you can access and hit and then it will lower down You know I mean there a lot going on on this that changes up the gameplay you know drastically You know, it's not just, oh, a drop target over here and you got stand-ups over here or you got this ramp or you shoot this. You know, there's a lot of targets that are kind of hidden in development. You know what I'm saying? Like that there's ever-changing gameplay, I guess I should say, you know, that sort of changes the layout. I think that's a good way to put it. It's not static. It's dynamic. So, I mean, it's changing, which is cool. It is. And then, like I said, you take on building, you know, with the power-ups or gaining missiles and, you know, you're battling a creature or so forth. And, again, this is all speculation just because we haven't really seen, you know, how the game code is and everything. But, you know, in the video you can kind of see some of the stuff popping up on the LCD in the play field. But, you know, I mean, just when you add that, that you're building a character up and you're gaining missiles and, you know, I can't use these missiles without so many mana and I'm opening loot crates and discovering all this stuff. You know, it seems like that there's just still endless possibilities of what can be done in this game. That's just like to your point of just being so incredibly different. You know, it shakes things, you know, shakes things up a lot. I like that you're excited about it because I think a lot of times we're just not reserved, but we can anticipate what's coming and we can appreciate most of pinball. I think it's fun. I like it. Some things don't call to me. And again, this one is pleasant, pleasant surprise for me. So, yeah, some people some people have just knocked it already, like because they don't understand the license. They just don't. They're not familiar with this brand. I get it. They're not. Because when I hear the license originally, like, I mean, and I'm just being truthful. Like, the first time somebody explained Dungeon Crawler Crawl to me, I'm like, what the heck is this, man? Like, I got, I don't have time to wrap my head around any of that. But then as, like, the community keeps speaking of it and speaking of it and speaking of it, I honestly, I still haven't listened to any of the books. I want to and I will. It's a lot. I appreciate it. It's a lot. You were in a similar situation as I was. And when you were exposed to it and you started listening to it, like now you're into the series. So, you know, I think that's cool. But it has it is such a huge underground following. And, you know, I was speaking to Zach on this just the other day. I said, you know, this this IP or maybe it was you. This IP is going to significantly blow up in the next six months. You know, there's a television show in the works that they're working on casting and so forth. Now, the underground movement of this IP is already massive, and you're getting ready to come out of that grunge band, that garage band that you would see at your local club or that you saw play a few places, now get signed to a record deal and hit mainstream. You know what I'm saying? That's what this is getting ready to be, where it was a huge underground following, and now it's getting ready to hit the masses. And I think that we see that in the next six months to a year. So, you know, again, to me, you're just behind. If you don't know what Dungeon Crawler Carl is, you're just you're just failing at pop culture. You got to get in the know right now. Right now, you got to get in the know. Like, I'm serious, like, because you are going to miss out when this explodes even bigger. You're going to be like, oh, shit. Yeah, I wish I would have listened to that now. Like, don't be behind. Don't be behind. Orders are open now. You can go to flippingoutpinball.com. You can grab your game. I believe games will be on the line in queue four. So now's the time to kind of get your order in the queue. It looks like MSRP for this game, Greg, is $12,350.

For those of you that are worried about, you know, family content, because this is a little bit more of an adult-oriented game when it comes to some of the subject matter. Definitely adult-oriented. And some of the call-outs. Now, there will be an option to bleep out some of the swear words. The author, Matt Deniman, has recommended that this book series is for those that are 15 and up, but it can be pretty vulgar. So if you're looking for something that's going to have some shock factor as an adult and kind of keep you on your toes, there's that for you, too, on this one. But anything else you want to add to this? No, no, I'm just excited, man. I want to watch that video again. I'm just mad that we only got to see it one time. So, I mean, I say that because, again, we're pre-recording this a couple hours before the launch. So it's out now and I will obviously see it, but I'm excited to watch that video again. I want to see it. I want to get my hands on it. I want to absorb some of this. I need more. I'm excited to see how the community accepts this game and it's going to be a great conversation for our next podcast because I think this is going to be a very polarizing title. And I think in the end, it's going to turn out to be a pretty good decision here for Jerry and team over at Multimorphic. I do want to thank Jerry. Yeah. You know, thank you for your trust as we come in as a distributor. I want to thank Kevin Mann over there, who's been a buddy of mine, came over from Buffalo Pinball and he's he's running marketing over there at Multimorphic. So, I don't know, that's a good team. And we're happy to be working with them and helping to introduce these Multimorphic games to to our customers, Greg. Yes. So we'll wrap this one up. We already gave you the website, FlippinOutPinball.com. If you want to contact Greg or myself, happy to answer any questions or even just send you an invoice personally to your email. You can email me at Ken at Flip the letter N out pinball dot com. Ken at Flip and out pinball dot com. Greg, can you give them your email, please?
