Hello friends, this is Drew from the Portman's Pinball Podcast. I just wanted to start off today's episode with a little bit more of a somber tone before we get into all of our zany craziness. I really wanted to thank all the wonderful people who put on the great pinball shows throughout the year. Ed Vanderveen and his group over down in Texas, Kim and Paul, and Dan Lucin, Susie Lucin, his wife and their family, Gary Heil.

At the Poor Man's Pinball Podcast, we just want to offer our heartfelt sympathies for all the people that have been affected as of recent with the coronavirus and all the things going on in today's world. I'm not going to go into too great a detail about those things. We all know what they are. We read the news. But I'm really sad that these shows had to be canceled, but I totally understand why. whether it be about our health or our finances I just wanted to give those people a very special shout out and all the people that help those shows go on a yearly basis us here at the Poor Man's Pinball Podcast along with many many others in the community we absolutely love and respect everything that you guys do to put on these amazing shows each and every year we will definitely be at both next year and just know that you have some poor men in your corner rooting for you to continue to put out these amazing shows for many, many years to come.

Well, generally speaking, I'm drinking 896 rum with either just over Coke or ginger beer. but lately I've been just freebasing Advil and Theraflu to keep me alive for another four hours.     It's called Soul Boxer. It's basically a pre-mixed brandy old-fashioned. Pretty good, huh? It will be gone tonight. I'm sure it will be. It tastes delicious. It is. It's really good. My dad turned me on to this. He told me, because he's always been a brandy old-fashioned guy. He doesn't drink a ton, but that's one of his go-tos. And he's like, oh, I found this stuff, because he doesn't drink a lot. So he's like, I don't have to mix it. I just pour it over some ice, and you're good. Yeah. It almost tastes like, you know, locally we have the Milwaukee Brewers baseball team, and Miller Park does have old fashions on tap. It almost kind of tastes like that. But only I'm not paying $14 for a little cup. You know what I'm saying? No, absolutely not. Absolutely not. So that's good. Got to love that. So you don't even like mix it in? It's just like a bottle? Yeah, it's literally just a whole bottle. It's got a lot of brandy and a little bit of old-fashioned mix. It's a little sweet. It's sweeter than what I usually do. Yeah, because I'm usually a sour old-fashioned guy. But, yeah, it's tasty. It's sweeter than my normal sweetness. How do the kids say it? 10 out of 10. I'll buy it again. Do they know what the kids say? I don't know. I don't recommend. I don't know. That's how you read those stupid reviews and stuff. I don't know what kids do these days. I just mix it up. You're swiping left on the drink. Yeah. I'm like, swipe left, swipe left. What was last week? Oh, I'm from Texas. I shoot cows. Yeah. I got my guns, and I shoot cows. And then you're like, what? Yeah, and I'm like, I don't know. I've never been to Texas. Pete was like, what are you talking about? You were like, I don't know. I'm assuming that's what Texas is. Carrie Hardy is cringing right now. Oh, yeah, for sure. Carrie Hardy, we love you. I'm bummed I don't get to see you down in Texas. That made me laugh out loud when you said, I was shooting up in the air, shooting cows or whatever.

    So many years back, we go to our very first Free Play Florida. So I had never been to a show. I had never been to a pinball show. But I was really excited because I played pinball for a lot of years, and I just started getting into the world a little bit. And they're like, oh, you should go to this thing.

    So me and my wife got the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday tickets. We went early so we could get into the hotel because, let's just say, Freeplay Florida, security is pretty lax. So as soon as you get there, you can kind of wander around in this place.

    That's Florida, baby. Oh, yeah. So we're wandering around, and we do a first pass-through, and we're looking at the machines and playing stuff. And then we sit down.

    I'm not like, I don't know shit about shit, really. I mean, I know pinball machines and I know playing them, but I don't know who people are. I don't know who Pat Lawler is at this point in my life or anything like that, you know. So we're sitting there and just kind of sat down, and I'm wearing an Atari shirt because I screen printed a bunch of shirts that I, like, sold to people.

    And we're sitting there, and this disheveled, odd-looking guy comes, like, coming over to us. and if you're in Florida, you automatically assume that's a homeless guy and he's going to shake you down.

    So I immediately put on my city face and I'm kind of like, and the guy goes, oh, you're here for the show? Yeah, what do you want? Kind of like, what do you want? And he thinks, at this point, this guy thinks I'm his handler and at this point, I think this guy is a homeless, crazy person looking for change. and Steve Richie doesn't hear so good, so he's got that going, and he looks like he just fell off of a plane. Eh? Or maybe that's just... Sorry. Too much. So at that point, no, at that point, we're both kind of like, get away from us, you insane lunatic. And then we didn't say that directly, but sometimes you don't have to say that. So this guy goes, oh, okay, and he just wanders off.

    I was like, well, that was weird. Then we just went off and did our stuff. And we go back around, and I'm like, is that that guy? And he's charging $130 to sign a trans flight. And I look at him, and I was like, who is this freaking guy? And at this point, he actually has his handler, because he still can't hear shit. It's in the middle of a convention, you know. Sure. And so somebody yells something to him, and then the handler yells into his ear. And then he says, oh, hi, and signs the person's name or whatever and takes money. But it was just one of those things where you meet one of the greatest guys in the history of pinball, and it didn't mean shit, and I was like, ah, I kind of blew that one. So that was my not-so-great story. Ah, it's a good story. That sounds better than the time I met John Borg.

    That's way better. He might still remember you in a positive light. Yeah. I don't think so. Well, you know, for your credit, you know, he does look like everybody's crazy uncle, and that's just the observation. Oh, we've been saying that since the beginning. You know, Steve Ritchie is that guy. I guarantee he fell right off the plane in Florida. It's already at 800 degrees, and he's just, like, pissed off. And he's wearing that sweater that he wears, so he's already probably melting in his own juices. And he's, like, looking for someone to save him. And the first person he runs into is me, and I'm like, get out of here, you homeless jerk. What are you doing here? Wait, wait, that homeless jerk is collecting $130 to sign shit. Yeah. I was like, huh. Wait a second. Did he sign 40s for money? Oh, man. It was funny, though. And I was like, oh, I regretted that because I had media passes and everything. At that point, I interviewed Dirty Donnie, and I interviewed people, but I didn't know who the hell he was. Did he get your credentials revoked? No. Yeah. Should have, but I still managed to keep hold of them.

    That was worth the several-week wait, Martin. That was a good story. It was that great. It's pretty good. Last week, I was like, I think I led that too much. I don't think it's that great of a story. Have you met Ian and I? I met John Borg once and got really drunk and went to a restaurant and puked in a urinal. You know, like, that story was infinitely better, Martin. Good job. Way to go. Yours is more epic, though. I got to tell you that much. I didn't puke on... Well, see, Ian's shaking his head now because he goes, I've seen this like a thousand times. That's every story with us. If that's an epic story, we are the two most epic people in the world. He's like, that's a Saturday night.

    When we get to that, I have to ask you, if you're doing that the same way as you would do a car where you clear, clear, clear, then you have to buff it down, or cut it and buff it, or if you just... I don't know if pinball machines are the same as cars when you do the clearing. Well, I didn't do it enough. You're similar, right?

    Well, because I do, like, guitars. And whenever I restore a guitar, I do something weird with it. I clear coat it with, like, triple thick, like, three or four times. Then I, like, then you actually sand it down. Then you buff it. It gives you that really deep, like, gloss. And I didn't know that's the same. Well, it seems like one of those things, you know, I'm learning more about some of this restoring stuff. And, you know, everyone kind of has their own techniques and their own products they use. And, you know, there's lots of good products and there's lots of good techniques. and you just have to find the ones that fit your budget and fit your style, I guess. Let's just go into the personal news and we'll get into it. Yep, that's what we're doing. So, Poor Man's Podcast, Personal Pinball News.

    All right, Laser Ward got clear-coded. Done. Tell me. Did you? No. No, so the process I went with, it was very similar to what I kind of took what I wanted from Dave Brennan over at TurboGrafx-7 and his Twitch stream where they're restoring an alien star. So they did a – so they clear-coded just recently the last episode I saw anyway. So I did take a bit from that. I took a bit from Vid's Playfield Restoration Guide on Pinsight. Thank you, Vid. Thank you, Dave Brennan. And what I did was I essentially just made sure everything was, paint-wise, where I wanted it to be. So I did more touch-up work. Parts where I wasn't 100% happy with it because I half-assed it because I was tired that day. So I fixed all that. Stuff that I was just going to leave because I was like, ah, no one's going to notice it. But then it's like, well, you notice it, so it's going to bug you. Why clear coat it now? Just get it done. So I fixed all that. It looks beautiful, guys. I saw it for the first time in person like 10 minutes ago, and it is awesome. Hey, you know, it's funny. Some of my touch-up work, I was looking at it. I was like, ah, it's not the greatest. But once I put the clear coat over it, it actually like all the colors pop. That's the thing I learned from all my research on all this stuff, because I'm doing a lot more of this now, is 99.9% of the people don't notice, and they're going to be like, wow, it looks great. Yeah. So anyway, I just scuffed it up with an extra fine Brillo pad, basically, one of those purple. I just threw one at you, Drew. Purple scotch pad. Yeah, scotch pad. So I basically wiped the play field with that, rubbed it down just so the clear coat had something to bite to, wiped it down with a tack cloth just to make sure that there was any filings or shavings or whatever. Fibers. Fibers, got rid of all that. I did wipe it down with naphtha. I did find that that helped just because I was worried about any residue from leftover glue possibly, which I think was long gone, but I just wanted to make sure. I wiped it down with naphtha also just because I wanted to make sure that there was no, like, play field wax residue. So you wiped down the whole thing with naphtha before? Everything got a good scrubbing with naphtha. Before you did that. You always want to check your rag, too, when you're wiping it down. Make sure what you're wiping down is dirt and not paint. luckily everything was kind of dirt you know so i was i was pretty happy that none of the paint came off so the naphtha evaporates very quickly that's why you like to use it you don't want to use like a water and soap because obviously you don't want liquid there and then you have to wait for that to dry completely and that's just a pain in the ass so naphtha is way easier just wipe it down boom boom um plus it won't reactivate your acrylic paints which is nice so after i did all that and let that uh dry and wipe and it dried pretty much instantly the naphtha did um i used KBS Diamond Coat, which is a product I'm unfamiliar with, but I understand the technology, working with Sherwin-Williams. It's a moisture-cure urethane. So some things to know about moisture-cure urethanes. Once you crack the lid, it's curing because the moisture in the air is already reacting with the product. So what you want to do is you want to crack it. You want to pour out what you're going to use as quickly as you can, being mindful of not getting anything in the rim of the paint can because it will weld that lid shut, basically. So make sure that's nice and clean, guys. So what did you roll this on with? Well, we'll get there. So I poured it off into a little cup. My first coat, I used a xylene. I reduced it 30% to help it flow a little better, thin it out.

    And that way, it'll give you a really good base coat. It'll go into some of the smaller depressions, get in areas like, say, between inserts or wherever, or if the inserts are cupped. It's just going to flow out and level out a lot better when you thin that first coat. So I did 30% with xylene in the KVS Diamond Coat.

    And then I rolled it with a – so I worked for Sherwin-Williams, big surprise, but I used – there's a product there, a foam roller that I love. I love, love, love. It's called a Flock Foam Roller. it's different than your standard black foam roller because you can't press down on it really it's like a very smooth it's got it's almost like a foam a hard foam that has like a fuzz to it so it really lays down clear coats and paints really really smoothly kind of like a mohair roller if you're familiar with the term but um with the the the foam roller it's kind of big and it's it's just a nice size that you get a really good coverage with it. You're not dipping it in the clear coat as much, and you get a really, really nice even coat. And I don't like the black foam just because I always end up pressing too hard, and when you press too hard, rolling with a black foam roller, you can create air bubbles because you're inserting basically air into the coating as you press down. So, flock foam is what I like to do at Sherwin-Williams. So, basically rolled it out. Now, I could not, and I was laughing with Drew. Funny enough, I could not remove one of the flippers. I tried my best, and I just could not do it. I think we're going to have to replace the whole flipper. So I had to roll around the flipper and then brush underneath it. I'm not ashamed. I'm not ashamed about it. But everything else I removed off the play field completely, switches, all that stuff. I did leave the, you know, where the bulbs plug into, the sockets, all those. I did leave those that are kind of recessed underneath the play field. I left those, but what I did was I took painter's tape, plugged up every one of them, made sure they were nice and secure, and then we were good to go, baby. We rolled. So I rolled that first coat on with the 30% xylene.

    Went really easy. And then I brushed around the flipper, and there were some other tight spots that I brushed.

    Worked really well. Smelt worse than I thought. so definitely put some ventilation, open up some windows. You do that down here or do you do that upstairs? I did it right there, baby. Okay, we're in the basement and he's opening some windows. My wife was pissed. Oh, because the whole house stunk? Well, you know, I don't smell it as much because I work with chemical coatings so I didn't smell it. So no, I didn't open up windows. I didn't do anything. I wasn't high or anything. I was just like, I smelled a little bit but I didn't think it was much and then my wife walks in and she's like, what were you doing? Oh, shit. Yeah, all right, here we go, you know. So anyway, ventilation.

    Use ventilation. Use ventilation, kids. So anyway, after that was down, and I let it cure for 24 hours, let it dry up.

    Touched it, made sure it wasn't tacky at all. It wasn't. I could see there were some spots where the wood grain did raise. so you can always tell like when you put that first coat guys down and all of a sudden you see like areas on the play field where it looks like you missed the spot you didn't miss the spot you know it's just wood grain it's the way it leveled out all of a sudden things will separate a bit and uh you really want to seal up that wood that's why you want to reduce that first coat so I was like I missed all these spots I was like oh no this is the damn wood grain raising a little bit. So no problem. That's why you do a second coat, even a third coat if you really want to. But I'm going to do two. I did two coats with it, and I'm pretty happy with it. But in between the coats, all I did was I sanded with a 220-grit sandpaper, scuffed it up, wiped it down with a tack cloth. It looks like shit when you do that. It did. I almost panicked a little bit because it was all scratched up. There's nothing worse. It was cloudy, and I was like, because I've done woodwork, and I've worked with a lot of polyurethanes and polycrylics and stuff, and I've never had it where you sand it, and it, like, really looks cloudy, like you can't see anything on the play field. I was like, oh, I think I just fucked this up, you know, but take deep breaths. It's okay. I was just like, I'm just going to clear coat over this and see what happens. Science. Wiped it down with that tack cloth, made sure it was nice and clean, and then sure as shit did the second coat, and it came out beautiful. Now, I'm not 100% done yet. I do want to wet sand because there are some rough areas where, I don't know why it happens, but either a bubble formed or something. I don't know. It just needs to be smoothed out a little bit, but for the most part, it's about 90% super smooth and then you have some areas. When we got this thing, it was a 6 out of 10 or 7 out of 10. You know, the play field, like, all the art was there. You know, there wasn't anything missing. There weren't chunks missing, anything like that. Now that he's spent all the time on it, you know, it's a 9 out of 10. I mean, we could nitpick about a couple things, like perfection, but I think for the average person that's going to see this, they're going to be like, wow, is that a new play field? Oh, yeah. That's definitely a 9 out of 10. Because there are, you know, like when CPR does their bronze, silver, and gold, You know, this would be a silver play field. I'd even go bronze. Okay. I'm a modest man. It's good, and it really looks new. It honestly does, minus the one flipper that's still there. Well, I was happy with the touch-up work. Yeah, it looks really, really good. Touch-up is 100% patience, and I was losing patience there for a little bit because there was a lot of paint missing, especially around the tops. but it's got to work. Because, you know, you could sit there with a brush all day long and be like, this isn't as bright as I want it to be, or this isn't as colorful as I want it to be. I went through, you know, my stars when I did that, it was like, you know, I went through seven, eight different types of yellow until I got it. No, it's not perfect, but it looks, Ian and I are kind of saying, if it looks better. Yeah. I'm not doing damage. Yeah. We're making this thing look better. I was like, at the end of the day, it's the fucking laser work. The powder coat? Ian showed me the powder coat. Oh, my God. We're going to have to put close-up pictures of this. The powder coat came back. Oh, my God. It looks like a brand-new machine. So we did the armor, the lockdown bar. These little metal flakes. And the legs in red with the metal flake. It looks so beautiful. The guide rails and the brackets the spinners are sitting on are a bright metallic blue, and it's... Kaneda, are you listening? You might put this in your house. This is the most... It's the most ridiculous, overkill podcast. Oh, it's... We're not even going to talk about what we paid for it, but... I mean, I know the guy was going to cut me a deal.     I've known Dustin now for about three years I've been to his shop when he first started he started off at a big powder coater huge factory and he was noticing how many people would come in and want rims powder coated or a bicycle frame powder coated and this big company would be like no it's too small It's too small. And all of a sudden, Dustin was like, well, someone's got to do this. I'm going to do it. And then he opened up this little shop, and it was a shithole shop when I first walked in. And now, you know, when I went in to drop this stuff off, I was like, my jaw hit the floor. Like, he had it all nicely remodeled. It's fucking cool in there. It's just cool. It'll be like a Scott Denise-y light show. It'll go well with all of our rubbers are going to be translucent, so we're kind of working on all that. Just can't. All right. It has the insert like printing on it. You use, then the inserts are clear with the printing. So you use your original inserts. You basically sand down the play field. you do a little clear over the inserts and then you lay this thing down yeah i've seen okay because i've seen people stripping it down to the white and then that's what they're drawing okay and here's what i thought it was but i've never seen one in real life where i go there it is and there's two methods i'm obviously using the easier method because that's who i am but like you know vid vid has this thing where he like stands down the entire play field and then clears the entire play field, but on their site, they have a lot of guys who have just, you kind of sand around the inserts, and then you spray, you just kind of get one of those spray cans of clear, and you kind of, you know, because the ball isn't actually touching that stuff. So you sand it down flat, then you spray over the inserts, and then you lay this thing over that. I will say this about Vid, though. The Vid is, he does things to like, the fucking ninth degree, tenth degree. He is hardcore. I agree. And super collector stuff. Yeah, and you know what, though? Yeah. Because I watch. The world's greatest one of these things, this dude made it. And you're like, okay, yeah, he did. Yeah, he's a super restorer. And if you can do freaking 80% of what he can do, like what I was trying to do with this clear coat, I'm like, that's a hell of a lot better than if I didn't have him at all. It is interesting that they're charging $69.95 or something. No, $62.95. $60 to $95. They're about $1,000 less than they were charging for Oktoberfest and Houdini. There's less in it. No, no.
