TL;DR

Grazley Garage tour: Whirlwind 2.0 near completion, CPR playfield issues and upgrades documented.

Summary

Mike Dus visits Grazley Garage to document Kevin's pinball restoration projects, featuring a nearly-complete Whirlwind 2.0 Total Chaos with premium finish (four-layer clear coat with wet sanding and polishing between coats), CPR playfield work on Medusa (defective 10-year-old screen-printed playfield being replaced), Stars restoration for JC, and Evil Knievel upgrades. The video showcases CPR's expanded aftermarket offerings including plastic extension kits, custom toppers, and specialty components.

Key Claims

  • Medusa CPR playfield (10 years old, screen-printed) experienced delamination where clear coat and artwork separated during population.

high confidence · Kevin showed visible playfield damage and explained the issue; CPR agreed to strip and reprint despite age of product.

  • CPR shifted from screen-printing to digital printing for playfields and now offers plastic extension kits for multiple classic games.

high confidence · Mike noted CPR's 12-color screen-printing process on old Medusa playfield; explained CPR no longer does screen printing and now uses digital.

  • Whirlwind 2.0 Total Chaos underwent four layers of clear coat with wet sanding and polishing between each coat for premium finish.

high confidence · Kevin confirmed: 'Yeah. And then like wet sand and polished it in between each uh coat' and later 'wet sanded and then polished it.'

  • Reese (associated with Flipping Out Pinball podcast) no longer makes custom rails due to seasonal/weather constraints.

medium confidence · Mike noted: 'Reese was like um part of what was it? This flipping out pinball podcast and used to do this on the side for quite a while...he is no longer doing these from what I understand.'

  • CPR plastic extension kits exist for at least Stars, Evil Knievel, and other classic games with shooter gauges, oneway gates, and promo pieces.

high confidence · Kevin showed Evil Knievel and Stars plastic upgrade kits with identical component types (shooter gauge, oneway gates, coin inserts, promotional stickers).

I'm Mike Dus and this is Pinball Shenanigans. Hi doggies. Oh Yo, what is going on? Today is a pretty epic day. It is my aunt's birthday. So, shout out Aunt Ida. It is Halloween and tonight is the night that the Toronto Blue Jays are going to win the World Series in Toronto. So, that is happening. I'm going to head over to the Grazley garage as well. Snoop around over there. Kevin's been working on a bunch of stuff and um went there last night actually, a couple of us, and uh shot some chat, drank a couple beers, did a little uh investigating of what's going on over there. And I'm going to head back over there and show you what he has been up to. I think in the last episode, the whirlwind 2.0 0 was nearing completion and it is basically done now. It's just waiting for the topper and then it will be officially finished and then Kevin has moved on and started some other things. So, we'll head over there, check out the action. Happy Halloween and let's go Blue Jays. Well, hello there doggies. What did you bring me Maynard? Hey, give me that. Aw, thought you were bringing me a bone. What's going on, dude? Oh, not much. Freaking trains every time I come to your house. Seems like ah, this one wasn't so bad. What are you working on today? Cars. Oh, yeah. Okay. I figured as much. Yeah. Time to get it ready. Yeah. Well, here is what is going on in the garage. We've got $6 million man. We've got Medusa stars. Obviously, the Mario Brothers cabinets. That's uh probably what on the back burner for now. Pretty much everything from me is on the back burner. Yeah. All your stuff. The cobbler's shoes. What is it? The cobbler's wife has no shoes or something. That's how the saying goes. I usually try to squeeze have a project in my end, but we got to get rid of some stuff. Yeah, it's pretty tight in here. Um, yeah. So, there's the other fighting cabinets. And then, of course, evil conval. So, and high speed. Oh, yeah. High speed. So, how many machines is that right now? One, two, three, four, five. And see which is going more. Oh, yeah. That's right. So yeah, because there was a little bit of a hiccup with the Medusa. You started on that first and then uh well kind of ran into a little bit of a problem. So this is like a 10-year-old CPR playfield. And uh normally that wouldn't be a problem. I mean it's still brand new, but it's 10 years old. And you started to populate the playfield. Hi Mabel. So, you stuck in a post looks like here and here and here. That's as far as I got. And then um I don't know if you can really see, but the clear started kind of coming off. And the artwork too, right? Yeah. And so you kind of like smartly paused and said, "Wait a minute. This might be a problem." And sure enough, if you look down here, you can see it is definitely a problem. Not sure what happened with this playfield, but yeah. What do you think of that, Mabel? That's not supposed to happen. I got it. And uh yeah, you can't really you're not really supposed to be able to pick off the clear and have the art come with it, but um absolutely. Kevin reached out to CPR who made this playfield. And uh even though this is a 10-year-old product, they have been awesome to work with cuz this was back in the in the days when they were doing screen printing of playfields, which is kind of amazing cuz this is what like 12 colors. That would have taken a lot of passovers to make this. So, uh they don't do that anymore. They do digital printing. So, they're going to send you like a shipping label, right? Y and then you're going to ship this back to them. They're going to strip it right down to Barewood, uh, digitally reprint the playfield, clear coat it, let it cure, and send it back. So, Medusa is kind of on hold. So, thumbs up to CPR. Yeah, thumbs up to CPR for sure. They came through like a 10-year-old playfield. They're going to redo it for just the cost of whatever, you know, it cost them to do it. Few hundred bucks. So that's pretty awesome. So that means that Medusa is going to be on hold until that playfield comes back. So this is Sean Bennish's machine. So like you said, tomorrow he's going to bring his sea witch so that you can do while uh you wait for the Medusa Playfield. And in the meanwhile, you uh moved over to stars. Wasn't really planning on doing this one first, so this kind of kind of spontaneous. Yeah. Well, I kind of took that off and I'm like, I better be doing something. So, I put this up and end up doing the playfield. I need to order some parts and but so it's kind of mostly moved over. Yeah. Okay. And this is another CPR playfield which is totally awesome. Yeah. Look at how nice and beautiful this is with the uh it's just many layers of clear it looks like. And it's just reflects the light beautifully. Look at that. Anyway, so you uh populated this for the most part. Yeah, you got the white painted side rails, which is cool. John wanted it in bright white. So, and one quick note, have a look at the underside of this playfield. Okay, so this is your stars, you know, there's a lot of going on here. But when you compare that to Medusa, uh it looks uh like there's like bare bones. I know. It looks like there's three times more on there. Yeah. I don't know how Bali managed to pull that off, but there is literally like three times more crap on here. So that'll be a little more challenging. Stars seems like a dream compared. Yes. And so yeah, this is for JC. He wants uh this is a nostalgic game for him. He wants a, you know, high-end stars with the playfield, the back glass, the plastics, the full treatment. So like this rubber is just kind of placeholder stuff. Yeah. Probably getting new drop targets. Probably new drops, new whatever. Everything like new everything. Yeah. So, got to sand blast all these parts. Oh, yeah. New rollovers, new Yeah. I've never even seen the white roller before, but that'll be getting I'll change. That's I mean, I can I wasn't really planning on it. I kind of just moved all this over. Yeah. Right. And and I can figure out and clean up the bottom side, but Well, so that star is underway. And there's uh some of the parts that are going to go on. There's going to be the blue rubbers. We got a new beehive, new pop bumper cap. Looks like Yeah, I need more than one hand to Thank you. New uh credit button, barrel spring, cabinet protectors. Yeah, these blue rubbers are going to look good. Post caps. So, yeah, that's just sort of temporary, this uh the white rubber, but yeah, that's going to look great. And of course, we've got the new plastic set. Yep. And looks like a spinner with new decals on it possibly. Or is it a new spinner? I don't even know that you can buy a new spinner, but it looks pretty good. You can only buy the decal. So, okay. And then, uh, this is kind of cool, too. What is this? This like a Is this CPR? Does this CPR? It's a plastic like extra kit. It's a plastic extra action. So, what is this for? Uh for the shooter. Oh, the shooter gauge. Yeah, this guy right here. I got a These are all crappy. Oh, that's cool. Look at that. Oh, if I put it on right, it's even cooler. Ah, that's neat. I didn't know that existed. I guess it would be this way. But, uh Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So, that and then uh that's for the coin door plate. Yeah. So, go like that. But obviously on a stern, not a belly. That's also very cool. Keychain. Yep. Nice. New lock. Oh, for coin insert. Yep. I love those. Another little promo plastic or something. These go on top of the oneway gates. Oh, yeah. Okay. Do you got the gates installed? No. I got to All right. We can uh clean these up, but they would be go, I think. Oh, that's pretty cool. I didn't know CPR was doing this. Well, that's neat. Didn't know that until I ordered all the parts for Evil Conval and they had an extension kit and I was like, "Hold on a sec." And then you kind of look around and you sort of find other games they're doing it for, right? That's cool. Where's this go? You have no idea. Sure. We'll just find it. We will find a spot for it. But yeah, there's Okay. Like a purple guy for the one gate, red for the other. That's really neat. I'm making a big mess of your stuff, but you know, it's pretty typical. Here's the head for stars. Yeah. Have a look at the before. I mean, this is pretty faded. It's worse. It's uh, you know, Baron of paint. Yeah, not a whole lot of paint left. It is what, 45 years old now. Rest of the Stars parts. These are the Stars pinball pimp stencil kit. hide your address just in case. Uh, I went to John. Oh, I didn't even notice. Uh, okay. And then this is uh some fun stuff here for evil conval playfield back glass. Got a stars back glass there as well. And uh, check this out. Brand new plastic set. So yeah, John is also getting the evil conval as well. So, he's going to have a high-end evil conval beside a high-end stars. He's going to be in his glory. Uh, this is kind of cool cuz it comes with this like extra little I don't know that it's really a topper, but um it's like a promo promo. Yeah, promo uh standups I think they call them. And then, so this is like the little extra kit, right? Extender kit. What do they call it? Evil Conievil plastic upgrade kit. So, there you go. There's where you can get your plastic upgrade stuffs. So, that has all the same kind of things. And uh yeah, it's got a this helmet and everything, which is kind of on the back side of here. But hey, let's uh let's open her up and see what it looks like. And then I'm curious. We're going to have to dig into whatever the heck this is cuz I've never seen that before. That is pretty cool looking. But let's check out this extension kit here or upgrade kit. Oh, shooter gauge number one. Oh, that's freaking cool. Wow. Oh, yeah. The center. Okay. Are these coin inserts? Yep. Oh, the number one for the center insert. Gotcha. And then the uh oneway gates as well. That's really cool. I don't know how much this would cost, but I can't imagine being too much. Whatever it costs, I think it's well worth it. Starting to get warm. I got to take off my uh hoodie. Nice shirt you got there. You know, I've never pitched this and I I always forget, but you too can get your merch at silverball swag.com. You can buy pinball shenanigans stuff. Am I wearing my pinball shenanigans? Check it out. There you go. You can have Pinball Shenanigans merch. You can have Grazley Garage merch. It's the first time I've pitched that in like eons. Like every month I get like a check from Silver Ball Swag for like a $152 because I forget to to pitch it. And even when I do pitch it, then I get a whopping $5. Anyway, uh let's see what this thing is all about. I mean, it looks like a giant token. Yeah, I have no idea. This was sort of a surprise when I open the box. Oh. Oh. Okay. This is a little stand. So, you break that in half and then um you can rest this whatever it is. Feel it. It's actually got some weight, huh? Oh, yeah. Oh, how cool is that? CPR massive token. That is awesome. So, I bet you just bend this. Yeah. Crack that in half. But I don't think you crack it. I think you just bend it. So, it holds like a V. Oh, okay. I'm guessing. Yeah. Yeah. Well, it's the first I've seen of this. Let's open that up and uh get a closer look. What? Cuz I'm curious what the Did you just drop it back there? Yeah. Oh god. It will be there for eternity. You have to make a new one. This is like childproof. Yeah. This ain't just your typical sleeve. Oh, that is awesome. What does it say? Royal Pinball Mint. And that's a pinball there. Little little reflection on it. And uh Classic Playfields. That's awesome. All right, JC. I want this. Just kidding. It's yours. But I do need me one of those one day. Okay. Also, we have got the special topper to go with it as well. They do. This is like a whole CPR episode. It's turning out to be. Eh, let's see what this thing looks like. I had an evil conval plastic set back in the day and I used, you know, all the plastics except for that like extra bike jumping over the evil conval like standup thing. And I ended up selling that on eBay and I don't know, someone paid a pretty pretty good penny for that alone. So, Let's see this. Okay, pretty cool. Color me lucky. And then it kind of looks sort of like a signature there as well. So, it kind of looks like a signature. And then, yeah, you just break off this top piece and voila. Got yourself a topper. Way up there. Yeah, that'll be up there. All good. You going I'm like, yeah, that was close. It didn't uh didn't fall, so we're safe. Okay. Well, that's a lot of goodies back there. And there is more. But, uh, did you want to get into back glasses or you want to save that for later? I will save that for later. Or safe. Yeah. Yeah. Good idea. Safe from people like me. So, there's the highspeed. This is also on hold for now. Yeah. Well, kind of on hold. You might deal with the cabinet. Yeah. Well, it's got to get painted anyway, so might as well just do that. Yeah. The rest of that is uh over here. You already did the playfield swap. And I'm sure I have shown this in a previous video, but this thing is just gorgeous. Yeah. Again, CPR, right? Yep. CPR playfield. Thank God for CPR, though. Eh, no kidding. I mean, what would we do without him? So, that's the rest of uh that. So, there's the old playfield. looks like there. Yeah. And then there's the old stars back glass. But uh I think Oh yeah, terms of Medusa. This is pretty cool. These are the James Rees rails. James Rees was like um part of what was it? This flipping out pinball podcast and used to do this on the side for quite a while. make these custom rails brand new and it was very seasonal too because you need the right Carl Weathers to do this. So, it was uh you know was a bit of a tricky operation and he is no longer doing these from what I understand. So, these will look gorgeous for Medusa. And yeah, so that is basically about it that's going on in here, right? I think we covered everything. Yeah. Cool. Okay. And um what was the last um episode? What was the the status of the whirlwind 2.0? Do you remember? I'm guessing it was just cabinet and I was working on Sorry Shane, he's calling me. And every time you call me, I'm recording. I will call you back. I promise. I called you earlier today to try and call you back from last time and I didn't get a hold of you. So I will call you back. All right. So, I'm going to turn off this flash so I'm not blinding you. But, uh, do you want to go check that out? Yeah. Cool. I think that'll be a good way to wrap up. You got some children to pick up from school and stuff like that, so we can't just muck around with pinball nonstop. Oh, yeah. We do have some adulting to do from time to time, but here is the whirlwind 97% complete. Just waiting on the topper. That's it. And uh I think not only should we have a look, it should be plugged in, right? But uh we should have a game before Jean comes and takes this away. Now, Jean asked you to make this the nicest whirlwind 2.0 in existence, and he was like, "I want it to be the best machine you've ever done." And you know what? You may have actually pulled it off cuz you took a bunch of extra steps on this. Hey there, choosy game. Um, including again, brand new CPR Playfield, but you added what, like four layers of clear coat on this thing. Yeah. And then like wet sand and polished it in between each uh coat or is that like a finishing thing? Just finished. Oh, okay. I wet sanded and then cleared it. Yeah. And then wet sanded and then polished it. So, how do you even how do you polish that? Like with a buffing wheel. Yeah. So, that's like a lot of extra hours that you put into reccleing the play field. Yeah. He said he wanted it like a piece of glass. So, well, it certainly looks like that. It is uh probably the shiniest playfield in here. And uh yeah, man. I think you really pulled it off. This thing is uh next level. This may in fact be the nicest whirlwind 2.0 in existence with the full art package. Got the art blades. And I mean, we went over the exterior before, but doesn't hurt to do it again. Did I tell you? Oh, yeah, I did tell you that um Loose Flip, it's a German pinball content provider, was kind of like streaming a Grazley Garage episode and uh I don't know, somehow like converted my voice to German. So, it was like someone clipped it. It was uh Stew sucks, I think it was. Clipped like a minute or two of the stream and you can kind of hear me speaking German in the background. Uh so shout out to Loose Flip. That's cool that they uh stream your uh episodes from time to time. Maybe they'll do it again on this one. I noticed the the clip that they took was like the shack attack. I know. Out of all the machines that are in here, he kind of zeroed in on the shack attack. At least for the two-minute clip that that uh we got. I don't know how long he was streaming that for, but this thing is basically new top side, right? I mean, new ramps, new pop bumper stuffs, um, new plastic set, drop targets, rubber, of course, LEDs. Every one of these star posts is lit too, which you had real fun disassembling them all, desoldering them all and then removing them all, then resoldering them all. And then uh also you had painted the entire inside of the uh cabinet. So that was an extra little touch Jean wanted. And yeah, love this apron decal. That's pretty cool. It's just a big magnet that goes over top. I've seen that before. And then uh yellow powder coating throughout the playfield as well. You got the wire form. And then the uh I guess that's about it for powder coating inside. Not much on It's not like it's full of, you know, wire forms or anything, right? So, uh how we doing for time? Uh we're okay for minute. A minute. Okay. Now we're good. Quick game. Y enough time for that. Okay. All right. Well, let's uh play some whirlwind Total Chaos. But yeah, that's it. Topper to go. And um Topper is sitting waiting to get picked up. Oh, perfect. All right, so we're going to You can choose whether you want the OG game or Total Chaos. So, it's kind of cool that, you know, you're not stuck with having to play the 2.0. You can play the original whirlwind and get your nostalgia vibes that way. But uh here I'll uh pass you the camera [Music] and uh if Dutch was here, he could give us a proper tutorial. But maybe I'll come back at some point and you know with my rig and actually do a proper gameplay video. This will just be a little teaser. Oh, it's got like the uh upgraded uh audio package, too. Like the the speakers and whatnot. Oh, yeah. What do you know what a good mode is? Uh that one's pretty cool. Area 51. Welcome to Area 51. [Music] TARGET AND BLAST THOSE UFOS off the the middle target. Oh, okay. I feel like a reload. You're trying to collect parts, right? I think so. The van. What? Parts for a van. Okay, that's very storm. Oh, okay. How many more times do I hit this thing? Oh, come on. I nailed it. Miss that one. Funky tunes. I like it. [Music] Don't screw me. I'm not going to get my part. If I don't hit this part not collected. Okay, that's all right. Let's try a different mode. Let's go. Um, I like zombies. Let's try some zombies. 5G zombies. New tune. That's cool. Animations are actually pretty good on this. Okay, what do we got to do? Shoot the moving arrow. Oh, robing arrow. Okay, about to hit that. [Music] Come on. We got 8 seconds left. [Music] Okay, let me just check the time. Um, make sure that you're not running late. Try again. Uh, okay. Got a couple minutes. All right, so failed again. Let's try it. I think that'll start another mode. Yep. [Music] Try some nuke Nick. [Music] Okay, so Nick is the guy. Shoot every jet. Really? Okay. [Music] Oh, are you serious? I went through every freaking one straight downhill. That was brutal. So, I've failed on all three missions so far. I imagine if I complete a mission, then I actually have to relight it. But because I'm failing, uh, I get the scoop automatically lit. So, let's try this again. I remember Dutch saying locking balls does something as well. Obviously, multiball, but let's try run, chicken, run. I know that was maybe a requirement to do something. Smash the left. Right. Is this video mode? Hey, I finally got a part. That was video mode, I guess. Now I got to relight the seller. I'm going to assume I hit the blinky target. All right, we haven't played Bermuda crab yet. Spinner. Okay, last time I hit this shot, I died. So, I got to hit it dirty. Can't be hitting it clean. I used to hit the ramp at some point in my life, too. Here we go. I hit it. Oh, no. [Music] I clearly need to hit couple. Another tail. All right. Uh, I was going to try and go for multiball, but Oh, I I think I know now. Got to hit the drop targets to light locks. I think, where's your Where's your cheat sheet? I have no idea how to play this. I have no idea how to play this. Yeah, I definitely Here we go. I hit all the targets. Nope. Nothing happened. Yeah, this is definitely not a tutorial video. Uh, what have we not played? That's playing scary boys. Scary. Oh, this is a multiball mode. [Music] Five targets remaining. Okay. Every target's lit. Oh, if I knew that would be a multiball, I would have taken that my first pick. That's cool. Two ball multiball. [Music] Only targets left. draw from targets. Got extra bell. Oh, sweet. Oh, thank you. That was a fluke tape. [Music] Almost forgot my part. What's it say now? Uh, five ramp hits. Really? Free game decals collected. Starting to build up this van. All right. I like this. Okay. What was the spinner part? You remember? So, I feel like a Bermuda crab. Yeah. I feel like I should be able to pull that one off hopefully without cutting. So, here we go. A little bit. Mother, you see that? I even shook the machine to prevent that from happening. Got an extra ball. And uh got uh yep, another 3 minutes or so. Okay, I'll try not to get any more extra Okay. Is there anything we haven't played? He's an acid planet. Okay. Acid planets. Shoot the drop targets. Okay, think I can hit this one from here. No, I cannot. That part is not collected. Try again. Well, I think that's the end of that. I think I got one. Did I have another extra ball? That'd be kind of cool. Uh, no. It's over. Do I get to enter my initials? I heard a free game, but Oh, no. 30 million factory high score. Trey out. No, Dud. Oh, that's Dud. Okay. Trev and Mort one. Another factory. Okay. Well, that's actually pretty fun. I mean, we'll have to get more games on this, but there it is. Whirlwind 2.0. The nicest one in existence, possibly. What do you think? All right, time to get out of here.
