Let's go. Episode number 166 of Don's Pinball Podcast, an avalanche of news on this New Year's Eve. It's late in the evening here in the Midwest as we anticipate 2025, which by all indications is going to be an absolute banger. Let's tuck in and go. fire up the discord tons of shout outs coming out slamming into it let's get into this Welcome to the campaign I'm about to put the party in the fast lane Bring pain to the divine and arcane Go hard like a bard on cocaine Unchained, I'm a PC's nightmare Better believe I'm prepared to go there Let it be known that December 31st, 2024 belonged to Dungeons & Dragons. Man, I woke up several times throughout the day to even more and more news drops. It's crazy, man. I just got back to my side of the planet. I spent the holiday, Christmas, over in Australia, like literally as far as I could go on this planet from where I was, bucket list location, and had just the greatest time. I spent the preceding 20 to 24 hours in travel coming back to my side of the globe, showed home absolutely wiped out, slept off and on. It's nearing midnight here in the United States. It's noon for me, for my body. I'm sitting here like let's just get all these thoughts together And let's record And let's give shoutouts to the community Give yourselves a round of applause I'm going to start with some shoutouts first off Before we get into the Dungeons and Dragons And the Harry Potter And the Circle of Magic Theater of Magic All the teases and things that were coming out today I could barely keep up Let alone keep up with all this But first off my Australian hosts Kimba Hank Ryan from the Fenton's Hill Pillball Podcast. Thanks for sticking me up there in Perth and showing me everything, man. We were wandering around a land that looked kind of like Sonoma, Solano County, California. That was the temperate. That was the climate. But then there's kangaroos running around instead of deer. It was nuts, man. It's like opposite land over there. Shout out to Enzo. Thanks for all the pizza that you cooked for us and hanging out over there. Awesome collection. I'm now on the hunt for a stern Star Trek, of all things. Like, I don't have enough on my plate that I've got to get to. Shout-out to Dr. John and the Game Night. Sorry I had to show up there and take first place. I hate to just barge in there and do that, but appreciate it. Shout-out to the spooky pinball games I played. Just a short – I'm probably going to catch up with all the Australian triple port over on a dedicated Patreon episode. But, like, the spooky games I played, 10 days in Australia. You want to know what spooky games I played? I played two Alice Coopers and a – what was her first game? Attack from, no, not Attack from Mars What the heck? America's Most Haunted, yeah, over at Dr. John's house Fantastic, thanks for the invites everybody There's going to be people that I forgot Had an awesome time, we'll run down that whole thing On the Patreon show after this I got some shoutouts from the Discord I will say this, man This community never ceases to amaze me I slept through the entire day And then my Discord is just like, Ed Boon, just packed I'm a member of several other Discords I know there's people that have more Patreon subscribers than me There's people that have more listeners than me. But I don't think there's a more active Discord in pinball than over on the non-spinballpodcast Discord link. I will post a link on the show note episodes for this. We'll get to some more here in a bit. But shout out to you, man. Give yourself a nice hand on the back. All right. It's been rumored that Dungeons & Dragons was coming from Stern Pinball. Even that it was coming next. Even that it was the game that was originally slotted in the shoot, as they say, but had to be supplemented for X-Men, apparently because of some cool mechanism or something in the game. But nevertheless, nobody was expecting it. We were expecting it on the 27th, right, this teaser that was going to confirm that this was the title. We know for sure that there's a media day planned for January 7th. I've been invited amongst other media folks. We'll get to play the game and give firsthand impressions, hopefully some live streams. I got away with it last time. We'll see if I can do that again. The hows, the whys, the what have yous, the early first impressions, will be out on the 7th, but we didn't know when that teaser was really going to drop. And I came to realize that the 27th, that whole rumor thing, may have been something that the community just manifested, so that we're getting mad that the thing that we invented didn't happen or didn't show up. But then a strange little thing happened, and this may have been what kicked off everything, and then as Stern put out their video for the fix that's coming out, the three-part fix, for X-Men. A stronger spring, a line gate adjustment for the lower part of the sling plastic ball guide deal thing. And then what I thought would be probably most helpful is a plastic ball guide towards the back to kind of simmer down that rattle. And so with that coming out, it was followed quickly on the heels of the teaser for Dungeons & Dragons. I saw it pop up on my phone about an hour later. Maybe it was Kerry Hardy that put out a Patreon update as soon as it hit. He was watching it. I was in and out of sleep, man. And so, Ed Boon, we see it, okay? The only thing we saw from the gameplay was a dragon head that appears like he's moving around just like the T-Rex head in Jurassic Park. I ain't even mad about that. Maybe they had like a dragon on a stick or a wand like Bond and they couldn't get it to work how they wanted. Maybe that was the mech that delayed everything. Maybe that had nothing to do with it. Either way, I ain't mad that they took one of the coolest mechanisms that we've seen in pinball in recent years, the head on the T-Rex for the premium Jurassic Park, and they put a dragon on it. If that's all it is, I'm totally fine with that because it's awesome. Also, the T-Rex even eats the ball, which, again, is awesome. So if it worked before, man, do it again. Dress it up and bring it back out. I don't get mad when a ride opens at an amusement park, and then it gets rethemed and put somewhere else. It gives me something else to ride, right? If it works, like, go ahead and use it, especially if you're doing that to spurn on innovation, right? You know, they didn't just lift up and put another T-Rex there. They dressed it up with a dragon, used it in a new and interesting way with a mechanism that's already proven to work and has had years of abuse and troubleshooting and things. Totally fine with that if that's what it ends up being. Now, Cary did another thing. He went into his video editor and lightened up the trailer so you can kind of see what else was going on in those, like, what, like four frames of animation that we got. And it looks like that there's three stand-up targets That are beneath the dragon So obviously this is a Brian Eddy game And you're going to shoot up the middle To hit the targets And then there's going to be something big there to shoot at It's worked on Medieval Madness It's worked on Attack from Mars It's worked on the forthcoming Masters of the Universe game So like of course Of course It's one of the coolest parts in Stranger Things Right So gameplay wise fine As long as there's more in it than there's in the Venom I'm okay with it. You know, a big dragon in the middle that's kind of what you expect. It's Dungeons and Dragons. Wake up the dragon. Beat him. Maybe he'll change different colors. You gotta beat the red one and the green one and the blue one and then there be a rainbow puke version for the wizard mode Who knows But so far that what we can deduce from this The other cool thing that dropped is we did get some information through the channels I think you could credit Jason Knapp with this. I'll try to keep all the crediting straight. It was fast and furious today, man. But it looks like on the 3rd of January is when the full trailer will release. I don't even know what day today is, let alone that, but it's probably a Tuesday. So we'll get a full trailer there. maybe a little featurette and then a couple days hence on the 7th we'll have uh distributors in there in the morning getting you know their first hands on it and then all of us yolks um we'll get a chance to play around with it and then we'll give some first impressions and some facebook reels and some tiktoks and then and then some b-kong in-depth analysis and retro ralph will do a really slick produced thing with a cool eye-catching thumbnail which i still don't know how to do. It's all credit to him. What a cool day this was. I'm hyped for the game, but you buy everything, whatever. Not sold on the game, but I'm hyped to go play it. I still enjoy playing new pinball, no matter what it is. Maybe short of Blues Brothers, but everything else. If it's new, I want to play it. I like playing games on location. I like having a compelling reason to go to locations. It's fun when you're hunting around for a game to play. Oh, there's a Domino's Pizza Adventure over there. Let's fly all the way to Oregon and go play it. Like, it's an impetus for travel, and that I dig. So I'm hyped for this. I'm definitely not alone, but I'm definitely not overwhelmed, because there's a lot of people that are just thinking, like, this is not the theme for me. You guys are nerds. Okay, pot, kettle, black, meet each other. You know, but people seem to be divided and split on this. I still don't feel like we have enough information. That being said, eight months ago, when I saw a long-sleeved Dungeons & Dragons shirt at Walmart, I went ahead and scooped and picked that up in anticipation of this game finally coming, so I could at least have it because I thought that would be fun. So I don't know that I'll be doing a live unboxing anytime soon for this game, though. My New Year's resolution, here we are on New Year's Eve, is to try my best to not purchase a new unboxed game this year. Now, asterisk, you know, Evil Dead and Avatar are coming. Those were purchased in 24, right? 25 will be a new year. So we'll just see. I was going through my list of games that I have that are still not code complete, and I think this is why I'm thinking along these lines. So right now, games I have that are still having maturing code in my collection are Texas Chainsaw Massacre, right? Looney Tunes, John Wick, and X-Men, right? I had Jaws, got it at release, was very happy to get it. The premiums were in short supply initially due to parts or something. I managed to get myself one, had a blast on the game, one of the best ones of 2024 for sure. And then, you know, it came time to sell the game to get the next whatever came out. And then I missed out on the video modes that were added later and some of the other code polish and things. And now over at Enzo's, I got to play a contemporary Jaws premium, fully updated of newest code. And, like, it's a fantastic, it's even better than it was. And so, like, I'm missing out on that now because I was early adopter on it. So I think I do want a Dungeons & Dragons pinball machine, of course, right? Code's going to be cool. It's going to have stuff to shoot up the middle. I kind of dig that kind of stuff. You know, keep the gameplay layout simple, but keep the code complex. I love that. Elvira is a great example of that. Stranger Things is a good example of that. Like, I can understand the code, and the layout's not overly complicated. So, like, that's, I dig that. I dig that. You know, Venom is absolutely not complicated and absolutely has some fun code to play through the first 500 times or so. So I'm okay with that. I'm okay with that. But I think I want to own a Dungeons & Dragons about 8 to 12 months post-release when the code is really rocking, like, where it should be. So I don't think I'm missing anything by letting this one release. Get to the people. Let other people have a chance to unbox the thing. I don't need to have it right out of the factory. Pick one up down the road. We'll work a trade deal. We'll do something. That's where my mind's at right now. That being said, that's no fun without a challenge. So I want to spice this up. So I was just doing some thinking in the bathroom, you weirdos. And if this game, I want to come up with like some reason like I would purchase this game. So if this game has some kind of dice mechanism, a 20-sided captive die that can bounce around freely, and then land on a number and affect gameplay or something, I think then I'll go ahead and get this game if they can do that. I don't think Stern will do that with Dungeons & Dragons. I think it will have a dice rolling mechanism, absolutely, probably several in the game's code and gameplay, but I think it will be up on the screen, right? The dice will go across the screen, and that's how you get your bonuses. That's how you get your plus one modifiers to your weapons when you get them. That's where you get your spell of protection, all that business. Maybe it'll be on a playfield screen Similar to what we saw with Star Wars With that little screen there where you'd bash the TIE Fighters That would be cool to be like on the gameplay Somewhere and the dice will roll on it Maybe even across the playfield even But they would be virtual If there's a physical dice make If I see that then you gotta sail stern Sign me up for a premium LFG right let's Let's effing go Short of that though I'm gonna try to hold as best as I can To my my no-name box and that is only because of this gamble right every time you purchase a game or you put down a deposit you are betting you are wagering that the game that you're going to get hopefully in a couple of weeks maybe a couple of months hopefully not a year hopefully about two years will be better than anything that's going to release in the next six months or so you know there'll always be something better in six months right so don't wait forever you know get a pinball machine enjoy it six months later something new comes out you know trade it in sell it off i think that's fine but like to get this right and then have your money tied up in a game and then in march we get harry potter or we get king kong or then you know in august we get uh pokemon or something amazing or like somebody comes out of the woodwork with a goonies that just looks amazing or like a ghostbusters uh remaster drops and it's like ah i got all my money tied up with alice's adventures in Amsterdam, and now I don't have pin funds for this new game. So that's kind of what's leading me to this. Not that I want to dry up or quit getting new in-box. My collection's been dwindling a bit. It feels good. It feels empowering. I kind of dig that. I'm going to keep that going. But I will say, if there's a rolling dice mechanism, that's pretty freaking cool. And I may just renege a bit if that happens. Otherwise, if John Wick and X-Men sell in the next week Then all bets are off, let's go Alright, those are kind of my thoughts My thoughts with that So, if we get a T-Rex mechanism I'm okay with that New Inbox Challenge, Rolling Dice, Code Complete Games Talked about all of those Mad Pinball's already out soliciting orders If you are interested in this game Go ahead and email jeff at madpinball.com Get yourself on the list, man And then get yourself one And look, I'm not going to judge you Right Just because I not looking to buy one new in box I not saying you shouldn or anybody else should not go out there and get it Alice Adventures in Wonderland looked fantastic Love what Lior did Love what Stumbler did The gameplay was okay It wasn terrible I didn hate it but it just didn rise to the level where everything came together for me to be worth the new in-box purchase price. So I missed it. I'm happy about that. But if you're getting one and you're hype on it, I'm happy for you, man. Go get that game. Invite me over. Let's go play it. For me, it didn't tick enough on my boxes, but your boxes are different. Either way, Jeff's got games if y'all want them. This was so fun to follow today. Today was very exciting. In and out of consciousness, I see the leaks and the drops, and we see, okay, fine. First thing in the morning, NAP was like, we didn't hear anything in 2024. Maybe we'll get it in 2025. And then, Ed Boon, teaser comes out. And that's quickly followed up with Jersey Jack posting this photo of Jack. I think it was when he was at Warner Brothers, and there's several Warner Brothers properties on the side of a building in big banners, right? There was Alice in Wonderland, Willy Wonka, and then a big Ron Weasley corner of like a Harry Potter billboard. And then this tagline of like, looking forward to 2025, dreams do come true or some such. And it was like such a great like volley back into Stern. Like Stern is like, okay, our new cornerstone for the first quarter of the year just got dropped, or a teaser for it anyway. And Jersey Jack is like, hang on, man. Maybe have someone hold your beard just for a second. What that was was just a reminder that Hey, Harry Potter's a real rumor Harry Potter, I think, is a reality And I'm hearing that March is That's way sooner than I thought this thing would come out You know, tell me you want everybody to forget about Avatar Release Harry Potter in March But, like, I think that was a You know, don't go blowing your wad all at once You know, just trying to ease off the hype Keep some of that pinball money in the pinball folks' pockets Because early on in the year Maybe March, they may have a brand new game And it might be freaking Harry Potter, right? One of the grail pins as far as, like, the new rumored ones that are coming out, right? Pokemon, Harry Potter, like the two hugest ones. I haven't heard much about this Harry Potter game other than I think it exists. I think Eric is spearheading this one. I think he wants to come back a little bit from some of the criticisms from Guns N' Roses and Godfather. And, man, fine. Fit and finish, light shows. I think Jersey Jack's got them. Gameplay wise I think Avatar is kind of the best one I've played I like it a little better than Elton John Elton John does shoot well but then so does Star Trek So why is that you know whatever They're on an upper trend for sure Elton John kind of changed the course Let's see where Eric can land And I mean people talk right And I don't have anything to really hang on So all of this is just rumors and speculation It's all over the place with Harry Potter I've heard you know they got your wallet go in, sight unseen, as soon as it's available, just get it in there. This is going to be the game. You're going to want to have this game. I've heard this game is going to only come out at $25,000 or something. I heard that it was like $5 million for the license, right? I don't know any of that if it's true or not. You know, it's not been corroborated from everybody. I heard recently that this game is going to disappoint people. And, like, that's the whole spectrum, right? Buy it, sight unseen, new in box, and save your money, you're going to be disappointed. and just about everything in between. What's real? Who knows until the magical boy who lived game actually gets revealed, right? Here's what I think. So as far as being disappointed with a franchise like Harry Potter, you're building, if you're only building, I think there's enough for three machines here as far as like code, layout, and eras, and lore, and all that business, right? So if you're building one game on the Harry Potter franchise, There's no way you're going to be able to include absolutely everything. That's if it's based on the movies. If it's based on the books, there's even less of a chance that everything everybody wants to see in their Harry Potter machine is going to be there for sure. They'd have to come out with one machine and have like three different versions and different eras or something of that machine. It's crazy. It's crazy. I think they can get close. I think you can have an absolutely compelling game with this license no matter how you slice it. But however you slice it, something's going to be missing. and somebody's going to be disappointed. And there's just no way to avoid that without making like three complete games. And even then, there's probably some expanded universe stuff that will be left out. It's like, you know, you got the wrong voice for Weasley or his freckle is on the wrong part of his butt cheek or something was missing, right? So I don't know. All the grains of salt. I don't know if there's a Poliwag potion for that or something. But that's very anticipatory. So it was so fun to see J.J.P. be a little playful just volleying back today. And then it kept going, like Pedretti even got in on the action. Happy 2025, we got magic coming. And there's this, you know, like elaborate looking golden frame, and there's fireworks in the distance, there's circus tents down below. And then look off to the left side of that image that they posted. There's like a hot dog with a sparkler or something. What the hell does all this mean? Of course, this is another remake that they're looking at doing. Are they teasing Theater of Magic? This is a game people love. people love spinny boxes and uh what is it a tiger with a buzzsaw blade through them or something getting log split whatever um you know but maybe it's pinball magic instead uh either way um you know i'm glad they're doing remakes there was some talk about this let's dwell on this for a moment uh so uh there was nothing but arguments online so the argument was are the cgc remakes better or are the pedretti remakes better you know are some remakes okay are they only okay if cgc does them and if Pedretti does them, they suck. And so here's my thought on it, just because why not add my perspective? I dig these remakes, right? When I got into pinball, the first game I was looking at getting, naively as it was, was Medieval Madness, right? It was a game that I really locked onto in the virtual pinball arcade game that was on PlayStation. It's available basically in every system, although they seem to like come and go with the licenses and when you can download which game or whatever. But Medieval Madness was a game I played the heck out of virtually. I got what I thought was really good at it, and then that led me to go to a free-play arcade that had one so I could go play a real one, at which point it handed me my own ass on a plate. Because, you know, transitioning from virtual pinball PlayStation controller to an actual machine with no trained nudging skills? Like, I couldn't make the ball do what I was doing at home. You know, but then I went around, and when it was time to buy a game, like, that's the game I wanted to buy. And of course by that time the CGC remake had already come out, sold out, Royal Editions couldn't get them and if you could they were way expensive so like that was completely out of reach so the fact that these games are being remade now making it easier for people to get them, I love that I'm sorry that you got a Royal Edition and they're going to remake them again and you're not going to be able to get as much money for it, I'm sorry that you got a restored classic version that's not going to be worth as much anymore but by far I think the benefits outweigh that financial risk that you take buying a game, and I'm glad that they're breaking more of them out there. So I like the idea of remakes. I don't think that the only ones that ever should be made are the ones that were made in antiquity and that we can never have anymore. Nobody else gets to have one because, like, mine is special and all that business. You know what? Yours is still special to you. Go ahead and keep it. Value only matters when you go to sell, and if you're not selling the game, then who cares what the value drops to? It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. I bought a new truck. I drove it off the lot. I know it lost value as soon as I drove it off the lot. but you know what i keeping it for five to six years i don care you know those that value that drop driving off the lot was mine to experience and that is value to me So if you keeping the game it doesn't really matter so much. If you don't want a remake, you don't have to buy one. I think it's fine. Don't get mad about stuff that you aren't forced to buy. No one's making you do that. Anyway, or be mad. Whatever, do you? I like the idea of the remakes. The CGC remakes are absolutely faithful to the originals. The Monster Bash is incredible. Cactus Canyon feels like Cactus Canyon. Can we get some updated code, please? A swinging saloon door or something. But they feel most like the original games. There's a lot of Attack from Marses out there, and I've played a lot of the CGC remakes, and they play just fine. I prefer the CGC remake. All the components are newer, and I like the new screen and stuff that's in there. The Pedretti game. I have played Funhaus a couple of locations at shows and locally here with the new code and stuff. I do like the new code that they put in there, So I like that part of it. It feels like you remade a funhouse with Bally Williams parts and parts from Alien as well. Like the stand-up targets are different. They're like the Alien-style ones or the ABBA-style ones. So it feels Pinball Brothers-ish. It feels remake. It feels like it is a better version of the original game, mainly because it's new. But it doesn't quite feel like I'm playing something that was strictly just an updated version of what came before. It's got some newer-ness to it. And people may not like that as much. So I think CGC takes it as far as, like, truthful reproduction of the original game. But I think the Pedretti version is an acceptable version of it. And, you know, given the chance or the option of purchasing an old one or a new Pedretti, I would go for the new Pedretti, especially with updated code. I wish it was a little more seamless switching between 1.0 and 2.0 code. But, yeah, I think that's totally a probes. So moving on, sounds like they're looking for which licenses are available that CGC doesn't already have, locked up in the Ark of the Covenant, and so maybe it's theater of magic. And if it is, I'm not a buyer for it. I don't really care for the game. I've played it. I get it. It's fun. It's a fun house. It doesn't mean I want to own it. But for the people that do really like it, I think it's cool to have that option, man. So yeah, and it keeps pedretting around. It means they're going to keep cranking out new games. Can't wait to see what new things they have. All kinds of stuff was dropping today, and that wasn't even it. That may not have even been the biggest thing. some bro dog over on uh freaking instagram uh posted this highlight reel of his year at stern i forget the guy's name didn't write it down says he's a producer over there i'm sure he's infamous now all over the internet uh but he posted this auto-generated reel of all these photos uh it's all synced with an ice cube song awesome i dug it shows all the production at the new factory on stern and one of the photos was a production photo of a bunch of slimer mechanisms which appears to be sitting, and some sharp-eyed people have been looking at this, appears to be all these mechanisms sitting in one of the newer production boxes for the line at the new Stern factory. But somebody else chimed in that this game was originally made at the older factory, which used a different container system, even for storage. So these are obviously from the new factory is what it's looking like. So why, dear listener, would there be new Slimer mechs being assembled at the new factory if not for the fact that The rumor is true, and Ghostbusters Remastered will be the next game released by Stern in the Remastered line, taking a game from the White Star Sam, Spike 1, or whatever you call it era, and bringing it over into the Spike 2.5 to 3 era with LCD screen and movie assets and all that business. Looks like it. That was the rumor I was hearing, and it looks like that's what's going to be happening later in the year. Maybe not next. Maybe after King Kong, after the price increase, which is still kind of hemming and hawing. And thankfully, Stern kept the prices the same for this new Dungeons & Dragons. I think that was the right idea. If prices need to go up, I don't think they do, but if they do, it'd be a lot more palatable if it was tagged with an L1 game and then followed up with the Ghostbusters Remastered. And then, by then, we'll probably have moved on. I still don't want it to happen. I still don't think it needs to happen. But if we were going to see one, that wouldn't surprise me. But, hey, couldn't think of two better games if you were going to do that to do it with, not that it matters to me, because I'm not buying a new box this year. I'm going to wait, and I'm going to have things come out. I'm going to play them on location. I'm going to enjoy them, let their code mature, and then maybe I'll pick it up. Will I stick to that? Probably not, but let's see how the year plays itself out. Did I hit everything? Gosh, that was a lot. That JJP tease, the Pedretti, Magic 2025, all kinds of funness that are happening. Started off the year, a guest appeared on the Pinball Nerds podcast with Orbital Albert, episode number 600. I meant to drop this at the beginning. I got to listen to it, and my God, this guy calls me up when I'm literally at O'Hare going through security on my phone. I know that was the shtick to try to find a very inopportune time for an interview and go ahead and do it. But listening back, man, I got to apologize for just messing up his episode 600 because it's just about unlistenable, man. I had to listen and turn it off. I was cringing hard myself just trying to get through it. So apologies there for just, like, trashing at least the intro lead-in to your episode 600 there, buddy. Hopefully you'll keep it up because we do love your specific perspective on the industry. But, yeah, sorry for souring that episode for you, man. It could have been something special. Let's shout out some Discord people. Dr. Tove, how are you doing up there? Shout out to Chris and his Alice in Wonderland. Dude's super excited about his game. Couldn't be happier for him. Even though it's a game that I'm interested in owning, I still think it looks cool. So that's awesome, man. Shout out. Who else we got? Jorge, man. You surely should be getting my X-Men LE, man. When you think about it, I think it just feels right. I think I shouted out everybody else. Mike from Long Island, how you doing? Old friends and new. Check out the Discord, man. There's a ton of people over there. And check out the Patreon, man. $5 to get in the door. Patreon.com backslash Don's Pinball Podcast. I'm dumping new content over there as soon as I make it. I said I wasn't going to hold back from the main show just for Patreon until I got like 100 people over there. And it's like I've got to feed these starving children something. So I'm going to go and embellish a bit more. How about a bit much in my recent expedition to Australia? Because it was fantastic and everybody should go check this place out. And I got a lot of cool information about how to do it in a way that makes total sense. So check that out for all that and more. Otherwise, I'm going to start getting down with this D&D rap song that I found online. You can email me at donspinballpodcasts at gmail.com. And you can find me in an arcade or something.
