Hello. Hi there. Welcome to the Punk Rock Pinball Podcast, episode 38. I'm Stephanie. I'm Mike. This is the show. We're the hosts of the show. We are the hosts of the show. Or the host of the show. Did I tell you I met Guillermo?
0:33
Guillermo who? From the Jimmy Kimmel show. Oh, that Guillermo. Yeah. Yeah, you texted me something about Guillermo, but I'm like, Guillermo who? The Guillermo. He has a new salsa company. Oh, Guillermo Salsa? That's exactly what it's called. Really? Uh-huh. I was at a trade show, and he was walking around, and he came to our booth and sampled our snacks by dipping them in his salsa. Oh. And he gave us a five out of five. Guillermo says five out of five Jackson's chips. Yep. Did he dip the veggie straws in there? He did both the sweet potato chips, the wavy cut ones, and the straws. Cool. It was pretty cool. Guillermo approved. You have what it takes. Yes, we do.
1:19
So that was cool. Anyways, it was a busy week. It was a busy week. I didn't get a lot of pinballing because I was out of town for a trade show. yeah step was out of town all week and going back to the previous friday night when we played in milwaukee oh my god so like we had the rock show in milwaukee like february 27th and then the next day i went to joe and shelly's and played in a tournament that day yeah i was pooped i couldn't do it i sucked and then sunday we did nothing i think we made our podcast yeah and then you flew away monday and then monday i went to the sharps in peoria and played that league how'd you do did well okay and then the tuesday i went to champagne and played in that league How'd you do? Very poorly. Okay. Wednesday, hung out with Marshall.
2:19
Thursday, played in our league at the HQ. How'd you do? Did really well. Friday, we played the first Fridays, every first Friday at the Bloomington Alehouse Golden Ticket Cinema. We did a tournament first Friday of every month. How'd you do? I was number one in qualifying, which means I won the Punk Rock Pinball Tournament. That's awesome. So in my heart, I was the winner because I don't care about the finals for the IFPA, so I didn't care. So I just lost on purpose on Pokemon. Yeah, I'm sure you did. That Pokemon's so fun. Pokemon's fun. Yeah, and then Saturday, yesterday, we didn't have any real pinball stuff, but we went back to the golden ticket so we could jam out on the Pokemon. Yeah, and I don't think CJ listens to all these. So our Thursday night pinball league, earlier that day, our friend Colin, or CJ as we call him, he picked up his Pokemon Pro from Troy at Tilt.

And he's going to put it on, it's on location now, but so Thursday, he picks this up in Decatur, he brings it to Bloomington, he loads it up the steps, he sets it up in the Punk Rock Pinball HQ so we could play it for league. Oh, my God, that's so cool. That's a lot of work to just set it up for our league session. And we filmed it. I went live on Facebook. I think it's still there in the Facebook group. If you scroll down a bit, there's like an hour-long video.
    3:53
Did you watch any of that? Like, just part of it, it was like the wrong way, and then... It only was the wrong way for like two seconds. Oh, I guess I didn't watch long enough. I guess you didn't watch it. It was the wrong way for like two seconds. I'll watch it. It hit past the first 20 seconds it was the wrong way. But then I flipped it.
    4:10
And I couldn't tell if anybody was commenting. I don't know how you see the comments while you're live on Facebook. I have no idea. Because I'm like, nobody wants to talk to me. And I wrapped it up. There were like 52 comments. Oh, wow. Yeah. And I couldn't see any of them. Oh, jeez. The whole time I'm like, I had a lav mic. I'm like, I don't know if this is working. Can anybody hear me? People are like, I can hear you. Oh, my God. But you had no clue. I had no clue. but it yeah it sounded pretty good uh so cj unboxed it set it up that's all on film and then we played it played a few games i think shelly won the first game on it right on she was so excited she was like dancing during her first ball she was like running in place like oh i can't wait oh my gosh all right i have to watch it after we record this that's cool just the first few seconds are the wrong way okay well i didn't make it that far yeah it gets flipped back the right way well Well, anyways, like, CJ's a really good pinball friend to do that. Yeah, because then the next morning he came and got it from the HQ, loaded it down the stairs, took it across town to the Bloomington Ale House to set it up for the first Friday's tournament. So that is a lot to just set it up so that the league can play in it. You do that when you love your friends. Yeah, so thank you, CJ, for that. And thanks, Troy, for getting the games quickly.
    5:30
I think we probably were one of the first to have it and play it on a location. That's cool. And then come to today, we had our tournament at the Poor Bros. Yeah. How did you do? Well, I just snuck into the qualifying round, came in fourth. We had 13 people there. I think 13 is the number.
    5:55
So the top four went to the finals. it was me it was cat scott lozier kevin johnson il we went in on venom yep and i won steph won the tournament congratulations thank you it made me feel like i'm like i missed that game venom pro underrated is a good game man so good and if you disagree you're wrong it's good it's so good it's so fun and i know the premium is better it's got the different the shots change per your character and the premium has a lot more the pro i think just for fun like the pro is as much or more fun than the premium to me and you can get that game for cheap how much 4k or less wow now brings us to the topic of today's show i have one other little story before we get to the topic but the topic today is you have fifteen thousand dollars somebody's gifting you 15 grand to make a pinball collection at home so we're going to you're going to say what you would buy with the 15k i'll say what i would buy or suggest what the listener might buy if you've got 15k you don't have any pinball machines and you have room for a handful, what are you going to do with $15,000? Okay. It's going to be a fun topic. Yeah, totally. But in music news, there's like a fun story I wanted to talk about.
    7:38
There an artist many of you probably know him some of you probably don There an artist called Jeff Rosenstock I don know how you explain his music He's kind of punk, but kind of not. But he's loved by the punks. Yeah, he's definitely punk adjacent. His music's kind of crazy. It's got some melodic parts and then some crazy parts. With a very rabid fan base. Super rabid fan base. And I think a couple folks in the Jeff Rosenstock band or entourage are pinballers. Oh, really? Like who? I don't know, but we saw that leaderboard once from whatever that place is in New York. And like two of the people on it were Jeff Rosenstock people. Oh, that's cool. Yeah. Huh. I don't know anybody in that clan, in the Rosenstock clan. I don't really know, personally know anybody. but I know there was some Jeff Rosenstock folks are pinballers and the band Pup they were in there and maybe somebody from Bright Eyes or something oh wow so I don't think they're in our group but anyway Jeff Rosenstock is doing this cool thing at the Metro in Chicago Illinois where they are going to play an indefinite amount of nights at Metro. Which is like a 1,500 cap? It's 1,000. Okay. That's 1,000 people. So they put the first show on sale, and when that sells out, they open up night two. When that sells out, they open up night three. So currently they are up to... Are they consecutive nights? They are consecutive nights. Oh my God, that's so cool. Back-to-back-to-back-to-back nights at the Metro. I believe and yeah because it was so the first one was July and the post was like Chicago this summer we were playing a potentially infinite amount of shows at the Metro oh my gosh and that one was for July 16th sold out July 17th sold out July 18th sold out where is the I know the 19th sold out or maybe it's not consecutive days because 16, 17, 18 and then it looks like the next one is July 22nd that's with Beach Bunny so they've got some big support bands but in any case they are up to six nights sold out. Oh my gosh. Straight at the Metro.
    10:36
And currently on sale July 23rd with the AJJ band. Oh. So they do have some huge like support bands because Beach Bunny would easily sell that out on their own.
    10:50
I don't know all these. Nnamdi was on one of them. But anyway, six nights in a row sold out. That's a record at Metro. Oh, really? In Chicago, yeah.
    11:03
If they do seven, that's just going to extend the record. So if you want to be part of a cool thing, you could buy tickets to the Jeff Rosenstock thing. That one has only been on sale for a couple days, so it might be on sale by the time you listen to this. That's pretty cool. Yeah.
    11:18
That's very cool. But let's get into it. So you can go first, unless you want to kind of swap back and forth. No, I think we should go Spender 15. Let's hear how Stephanie has got $15,000 to start a pinball collection at home. What are you getting? I'm going to get four games. Getting four?
    11:44
Yeah, I'm getting four. And two of the four we have never had, but I think would be fun to have. Okay.
    11:53
Number one on my list, Jaws Pro. Okay. I think it's a must-have for any collection. A JAWS machine. And we were just playing the Pro at the tournament today at Poor Bros. It's great. It's good. Like, it's a great game. Yeah. And I think you could probably pick one up for around $6,000. Yeah, we'll call JAWS Pro $6,000. I think you could sharpen your pencil and you probably could get one a little bit lower. If you looked hard, you could probably find a JAWS Pro for $55,000. But I'm going to say $6,000 with a little asterisk that, like, sharpen the pencil. Yeah. For my list, I went kind of like the mid to higher on the pin side price for most of them.
    12:34
Yeah, me too. Just so somebody's like, you can't get a Jaws Pro. I think mine are right around there. Yeah. Next up, I'm going to get a Jackbot. Ooh, yeah. And I think you can pick one of those up for about 4K. Yeah. So that's 10. I forgot about that one. It's a fun game. It's real fun. Like real fun. I like it better than Pinbot because it scores more. Yeah. I think maybe you can get a Pinbot cheaper even. Pinbot might be cheaper than Jackbot, but Jackbot, the scores are higher, so I like that. Yeah, and it just is a little bit newer. I like that one too.
    13:10
Then for, I think about 2K, maybe a little less, you can get a Firepower. So that's in there. Yeah. And then a collection for me is not complete without a Lawler game. Oh. So I'm going to say Earthshaker. and I think you can get that for about $3,500 which puts me a little over the $15,000 mark I know but I think you could get all four of those for $15,000 Pro tip, anyone that might be interested in an Earthshaker our good friend Jeff who fixes all of our games at the HQ or fixes our games at the HQ he's got an Earthshaker for sale right now for right about $3,500 Well, there you go. So if you want to, it's on Pinside. It's listed on Pinside and Facebook Marketplace. If you want to buy an Earthshaker near Bloomington, Illinois.
    14:04
Jeff didn't ask us to do this, and Steph was trying to find a 3K Lawler. So that's probably a good one to add. Yeah, I mean, I also like Whirlwind. That one's more. Whirlwind's a little more. Like Funhouse is a little bit more.
    14:19
Ripley's is a little more. So that's probably one of the less expensive. You could go Earthshaker, you could go like Monopoly, or you could go Roller Coaster Tycoon, probably on that same range. I think those are a little bit more. A little more. And I bet you Earthshaker was better than those. Probably. I bet you.
    14:38
Okay, so those are your four. I think that's pretty solid. I think that's real solid. I mean, you get like that Firepower early 80s, whatever they call that system. I don't know. I think it's like System 5 or 6 or something. And I feel like Firepower made me a better pinballer in a lot of ways. Yeah. And it's just fun, and you just want to hit start again. Yep. Jaws takes you on this, like, big adventure. Yep. You get, like, you know, the Spike 2 sign-in stuff. Yeah, like a modern game with deep code so you can play it, like, and you can get a long game on it. Mm-hmm. Yeah. And then like jackpot and earth shaker DMDs. Yeah. Great Solid Jackpot DMD is a solid state I think it a solid state Oh is it I don know now I think it a I don look it up I've got to look up Jackpot Pinball. I'm sorry.
    15:34
Pinbot is solid state, but Jackpot might have a DMD? I think it does. I've only played it a few times, but I know it scores higher than Pinbot, which is why I liked it better.
    15:46
Where's the picture of the game? Marshall looks so disappointed at you it's the WPC games that's going to have a DMD yeah it's a dot matrix yeah good call and they're saying like a jackpot 3700 to 4400 so I said 4k so you might be able to save a couple bucks in there and make you know make it work yeah I have some suggestions and they're all like kind of plus minus Because, I mean, if you look hard enough, you can find deals on a lot of this stuff.
    16:21
I think that's a solid lineup. Thanks. I'd like to play that lineup. Now I've got to find mine. I have it on a note. I made a note.
    16:30
So I'm going to give a few options at each price tier. Okay. You bought four machines, which is good. Are you giving me options? I'm going to give the viewer listener options. Okay. Like if the listeners, if someone's listening and they're like, I might want to spend 15 grand and get a pinball collection. I'm going to suggest like kind of a couple few different tiers of games and then a few that I would choose within them. Okay.
    17:01
And I'm going to spend my 15K on three games. Okay. So Steph's buying four. So if you like quantity. I mean, you could buy a lot more with 15K too. Absolutely. You could buy a bunch of Gottlieb System Ones and buy like 12 of them, 10 of them. Okay. Right? Maybe.
    17:24
At least probably nine. Between eight and 12, depending on the condition of Gottlieb System Ones. Okay. Right? Maybe. They might not all work. Well, that's true. So the prices, like your prices, those were, you could get one in nice, use one in nice condition at the price that you put them at. So that you wouldn't have to be fixing it all the time. Right. And I'm doing the same. Like I'm, the price tiers I have, it would be, you likely could find these in like pretty, pretty decent shape that functioning. so on my fit my 15k for the upper end i'm going to suggest a used stern premium i'm not going with the pro even though we do buy a lot of pros but this is only going to be a three game collection okay so i'm going to suggest that you listener viewer you buy a used stern premium and probably my top three that I would recommend around $8,500.
    18:34
I've got that at $8,500. Some of these might be a little higher or a little bit lower. Okay. Jaws Premium. Yes. That's the one I would say, but I knew Steph was also going to say a Jaws, so I'm going to give a couple more options. Okay. If it's my money and someone took all of our pinball machines and left us with $15,000 total to spend on pinball, it's Jaws Premium. Okay.
    19:02
But you could also buy, in a similar price range, a King Kong Premium. It's a great game. Very good game. The code has come a long way. I still suck at it.
    19:15
But I feel like that game is really deep, and I think you could get the same kind of long-term enjoyment out of it that you could with Jaws. Yeah. Or similar. Especially if Jaws is not for you.
    19:29
Then get a Kong Premium or get a James Bond Premium. Ooh. A Premium or a Pro? I would just go with the Premium. And the Bond Premium is probably going to be under $8,500. I think a Bond Premium is like $7,500. So you could save $1,000. It's a great game. There.
    19:49
And Bond, you really could get a Pro? I would get a Pro. and in that case i could add another game but i'm going with premiums but three of my if you're brand new you got no games you want to use stern i would say jaws kong or bond are going to have massive replayability yeah agree three great games my second i'm going with kind of that williams like the wpc era and i budgeted that about four thousand bucks okay Some of these could be a little bit more than 4K. But again, like if you went with the bond premium, you're saving a grand.
    20:30
But I'm going $4,000 range. These could be $4,000 to $5,000, depending on the condition. My top one that I would probably choose is High Speed, The Getaway 2. Great game.
    20:43
Another one you could grab in there around that same price, Fishtails. Very much fun. another one i think this one might be a little bit more than the others if you get a nice one is elvira scared stiff yeah and that one i'm not sure if that's i think that's wpc i'm not sure if it's that or slightly older but high speed to get away fishtails elvira scared stiff three very fun games fishtail is probably the weak weakest of those three to me but i enjoy it I enjoy it too.
    21:18
And then we're going to go with an older game, like a Williams System 6-ish game. Okay. And I'm giving you $2,500 there.
    21:32
Okay. And for $2,500 of any of these three games, you could get a really nice one. Do tell. And those would be Firepower would be my choice. but if you don't love firepower you could get a gorgar it's also great fantastic game or you know like either one of those you could get blackout oh that's a good one too yeah we played that up at uh like the papa tournament i think and then they have one at the ord and that was one both times i played i'm like this one's fun it's fun in the same way as like a firepower or gorgar so that's how i'm going to spend around about 15k i think that's solid how do we do let us know in the comments below what would you do what would you do kind of what three or four i mean you could just go with like all williams system six games and buy what's what's 15k divided by 2500 i'm suck at arithmetic six six so you could get six games if you don't care for the modern ones you know or if you only like the modern ones you could just get like two you know you could get a used jaws premium and then like another kind of used stern pro of some sort or or two used premiums if you went with like get a jaws premium and then like a venom premium used is cheap Yeah And Venom is a better game than people think it is Yeah It very good It very good It very fun Uh I tore it up You did.
    23:15
Venom was in the championship match that you won on. And we have not played Venom in a while. No. How long has it been since you played Venom?
    23:24
Joe and Shelly don't have it anymore either, do they? No. Gosh, I don't even know. But I felt like it was like seeing an old friend. Mm-hmm. I played one somewhere and I can't remember where now. I don't know, but it's been quite a while. And it was fun. Yeah, I think Venom's a real underrated game.
    23:44
I think Mandalorian's an underrated game. Yeah, they're both like people think they're dogs. Because either Venom or Mandalorian,
    23:54
if you want like a modern, used modern Stern, Venom Pro, Mando Pro, 4,000 or less. Good bang for your buck. You can get those.
    24:05
Like, that's crazy. Yeah. Yeah, super good deal. But, yeah, that's what we would do with $15,000. What would you do?
    24:17
I'm curious. It's a short episode. That's 24 minutes. What else do you want to talk about? I don't have a lot else today. It's been a long week. Maybe we just have a short one today. The time change happened today. it's 8 41 it doesn't feel like 8 41 it feels like midnight it does and we got a lot of sleep last night i know but it's yeah crazy weird time change day we've got league in peoria tomorrow it's just i was texting my friend ryan saying like i'm playing an unsustainable amount of Competitive pinball.
    24:59
Ryan Young? Yeah. Oh, my God. And he says something like, that sentence is insane. Oh, my God. But it is almost an unsustainable amount of competitive pinball that we're doing right now.
    25:17
When you're doing like five in a week. Well, we just want to be better. Yeah, I do want to. I'm getting over like the yips, like the tournament chokes. I'm getting better at that.
    25:30
Today was not a good example of that. I was in the bottom four today. I think you warm up too much. Maybe.
    25:39
Maybe. Today I was just out of it. Okay. Just out of it today. I mean, me too. Because sometimes I play well if I warm up a good bit. but sometimes I play well if I don't warm up at all.
    25:55
I don't think that matters. It's just all for me about how clear is my mind when I'm going up there. And do you have a plan? Do I have a plan? Like Jurassic Park, I lost on that. I had no plan. I never have a plan on Jurassic Park. I don't know how to play it.
    26:12
That's not one. A lot of people like that game. It's not one that I would get with $15,000. I like that game. I think it's fun. I don't know what to do.
    26:22
Keep it alive, hit the flashing shots. I know how to get the multi-balls, but like, I don't know. It's not my favorite.
    26:30
Kind of like Iron Maiden that way for me. Yeah. Where it's like... I just, I don't like Iron Maiden. While I'm playing it in the music, I just think like, this is, Iron Maiden is like really bad light rock.
    26:47
It kind of is in a way. it's like not good to me it's not good but Iron Maiden is one where I like the premium better than the pro does more stuff yeah we are playing in an unsustainable amount of competitive pinball when are we going to break I don't know I think the three leagues per week is like a lot.
    27:23
Yeah. I don't know if Joe and Shelly are going to do a spring league as well. I mean, we'll play in it if it is. I mean, of course we're going to play in it.
    27:32
How do you not? I don't know if the champagne one runs in the spring. Probably not. Because there's a lot of folks that work at the college and stuff, I think. It ends after their finals. It doesn't pick up again until like September. Okay. And the finals of that are going to be at our HQ Which will be fun And Marshall's trying to climb up in the chair there He's mad he doesn't have his chair anymore So he's like let me in the show You want to be in the show buddy It's fine But I think that's We can have a short episode this week Last couple were kind of long So we'll just wrap it up I think we got our point across I would be excited to play Your lineup of games or mine For $15,000 And I would love to hear some other strategies on how you all would spend $15,000.
    28:23
I'd love to know. I wonder if my dog's face is in the camera right now. I don't know. He's being so funny.
    28:31
He just wants to be so close. And if you're listening on the Spotify and the Apple podcast, thank you. Yeah, thank you. and it would mean so much if you would give us a review.
    28:47
If you'd give us a review, that'd be wonderful. We'd love that a lot. Yeah, if you can't see the video, Marshall is trying to oust Stephanie from her chair. He likes to sit in this chair. Yeah, and he's trying to claim it.
    29:01
It's our dog. Well, we do have a big week of pinball. I might have to go out of town. I don't think I told you that. That's fine. hopefully it's not the ladies league week it probably is yeah Steph always misses the bells and chimes tournaments yeah it might happen again anyways thank you for listening and thank you for participating in the punk rock pinball tournaments what are we up to let's take a look we've got a whole gaggle of I think people coming on in California? California just had their first tournament yesterday.
    29:44
I don't know if the results have been put in. The California results are not in. So as of right now, the Punk Rock Pinball Association, 1,067 players have played in 134 events. That's on the open side. And then the women's, we have 143 in 27 events. That's pretty awesome.
    30:13
I'm up to number two on the overall leaderboard. I thought I was going to dethrone Kat today, but I sucked and she played good, so she stays in the lead until tomorrow when I beat her at the Joe and Shelly League. You hear that, Kat? Yeah. It will happen. It's coming for you. It's going to happen. He's putting it out there. Mm-hmm, putting it out. Practicing the secret. or whatever that is.
    30:38
Manifest it. All right. Well, let's go wrap this up. Yeah, we've got to mix it. We've got to edit it. It's almost 9 o'clock. Have a super week, everybody. Play lots of pinball. Yep. Toodaloo. Bye.
