    It's time for TPN Industry News. Hi there, and welcome to this week's spooky Haggis Industry Talk update with Dr. John on the Pinball Show. We actually have some news this week with a code update for Alice Cooper. version 1.1.0.1 which apparently is 13 in binary. The main features which is something Bowen's been wanting for a long time is rooms have items you can pick up to help kill the monster and make it easier to complete. Apparently the items vary according to which monster you're locked into and which room you go to so there's a lot of new things to explore. Kevin and Lindsay were streaming on What The Flip and managed to find a chainsaw to help with killing the zombie, which made it a one-shot finish rather than a three-shot finish. Very cool stuff.     Hi, this is Ken Rudberg with your Jersey Jack update. Well, there's not a lot of news from Jersey Jack or any other pinball company for that matter. But there is some news about JJP's founder, Jack Guarneri. It's well known that bars and pubs around the country are struggling right now with the COVID-19 pandemic, especially bars that are focused on pinball. One of those is Jack Bar in Brooklyn, and when the owner, John Ehrlich, was looking for a way to support the bar through an online fundraiser, he contacted Jack Guarneri and asked him if he'd be willing to donate anything. Now, most people probably would throw a couple of t-shirts in a box and send them off, But Jack drove up to donate some items from his personal collection and did that to support their online fundraiser. I'm sure his generosity is greatly appreciated by everyone at Jack Bar, and it just goes to show how Jack is really willing to give back to the pinball community. Kudos to him for that.     Taking a look at Stern and the Pinside Top 100. Hey everyone, Craig here again, the pinball show's Stern News Correspondent. Well, with not much going on this week and all eyes on a yet-to-be-announced official start date for the Stern Factory, I thought it would be a good time to see where Stern machines sit these days on the Pinside Top 100. Broken into two halves for time's sake, I'll start at 100 and work upwards towards 50. Starting with their lowest entry to the highest, we have 99 with the 2011 Transformers. At 97, we have the Stern Classic Sea Witch that the more recent Beatles title was designed from. Jumping up to 95, we have the 2008 Batman The Dark Knight. Jumping to 79, we see another Stern Classic from 1980, Quicksilver, which is rumored to be the design basis for an upcoming Led Zeppelin pin. Moving forward, we have the recent Beatles pin at 75, the 2007 Family Guy at 74, Stern's 2006 Pirates of the Caribbean at 72, and the franchisor classic The Monsters at 69. At 63 and 62, we see the 1980s Stargazer and Ripley's Believe It or Not, followed by X-Men at 60, and the 2015 rock pin Kiss at 56. Some real gems there, both modern and older, hidden in this group and worth considering if you're in the market for that new addition to your home game room.     Well, Zach, it's always great to hear from the correspondents, even when they have nothing to say. I was going to say, this week, a little lackluster, but they still present well, those fellas over there. They did talk about, in the shit update, Dr. John talked about Spooky Pinball updating the code to Alice Cooper's Nightmare Castle. That's right, version binary 13.

    Is that what it was? Sometimes it's hard for me to understand the Aussies. It just sounds, well, ballin' out of vote name, and I'm all right.

    That's a good Australian accent, right? I couldn't tell what you said. Exactly. That's my point. He talked about the new update having weapons that can be acquired in certain rooms as you're looking to battle these monsters. So I suppose certain rooms have certain weapons and those weapons or items are based on the monster that you're going to battle. And it makes it easier or more efficient to battle a monster if you have said weapon or item. So I like the premise of that code change. That's pretty cool. They've been talking about that from day one, but never has it been implemented quite yet. Yeah, it sounds interesting. I was curious whether or not using the item, like, I don't know, is it as hard? Like, are you in as much risk trying to get the item and then going to the boss as it is to fight the boss? Is there a point disadvantage to using the weapon? Like if you – the example that Dr. John gave was chainsaw against the zombie reduces the shot quantity to beat the zombie from three to one. One shot, yeah. One shot, when do you get the full points? Do you get more points if you actually do the three shots? Like are you rewarded in some way for not having the weapon? These are questions that we seek answers to. I like that Alice Cooper has always struck me as a unique rule set, very much story-based. If we're talking mode-based systems and mode-based games, this is one of them. But it's very unique. Spooky does that a lot of times, Dennis, I find, with their codes. They might take little risks here and there, whether it's items that are in the mystery list, like an extra tilt warning or something. Just very unique things that Spooky takes risks on that I think pay off really well, as exampled by this newest code update. I haven't updated mine because it's getting ready to leave, but maybe I should update it before. Maybe.     Quite possibly. Beep. Now, weren't people calling for it to change again? I don't know. I don't know anymore. I think it's gone through at least three versions of beep. You still playing your TNA a lot? No, lately I've only been playing Walking Dead, but I've only, I mean, I only played maybe, I think this last week, three games of pinball. Well, no, I guess it was more than that. I was playing Walking Dead for about 30 minutes and then I was selling my jacks to open. So I fired it up to make sure everything was working on that and just played one game. But otherwise it's only been Walking Dead. Oh, I see. Speaking of spooky pinball, hopefully soon we're going to get some more Rick and Morty's rolling off the line. You're waiting. You should get yours any day now. I haven't even did my bill list on what I want on it. Maybe you want it stock. Well, Wisconsin opened up. Yeah. Like there's a big old cluster up there because Wisconsin opened up, but then they didn't, and then they did, and there's people getting drunk at the bars, cheeseheads everywhere. Yeah, their state Supreme Court overturned, I believe, the governor's authority to limit the gatherings. So it's a free-for-all. so i don't know what if that means that spooky is now geared up and ready to go or if it doesn't just want my game hey dennis where's my freaking marty it's probably right there on the line they probably just needed to install like one last plastic set or something and it was ready to go no i don't even patient they didn't even they haven't sent me the list of the little checks where i get to check my mods well they put that on last so i got second to last thing i have a Powder coat? I want everything powder coated. Why? Why do you not like things to be shiny? I know. Well, because if not, what is the standard on that one? Is it just the hammered gray? I don't think it's like that. I didn't look at buying one, so I have no idea. Jeez. Before we move on from the correspondence, Zach, Craig Bobby, Mr. Bobby. Oh, shake and bake. So what is he doing? He's Mr. Showtime, baby. I love it. Okay. All right. I respect. Oh, no. I respect the desire to generate content. I have one issue. The list that he goes through has clearly only been defined for some strange reason by games that were branded as Stern. But he's mixing Stern Pinball and Stern Electronics. Other than a tie by name, it doesn't make any sense. There's no official continuation from Stern Electronics to Stern Pinball. And if you wanted to go that route, Zach, if you wanted to go that route, why were Data East and Sega Games not included when they are clearly a continuation of the same company that is the modern Stern Pinball? We will just have to wait and see what Craig says was his logic behind his approach. Because I don't get it. You know what? Kudos to Craig Bobby for trying to have a segment when there is no news. Damn it. I would like another correspondent perhaps Kaz could go through the top 100 as well but maybe he could mix American Pinball Games in with Chicago Coin why not? there is no law here we just kind of do what we want it's martial law I am the law you're a cowboy there's a whole chain there actually going back to Chicago Coin but they're different companies at different phases and you can do it with Stern but you can only go back to Daddy East if you're going to stick with the same actual business. Oh, okay. Yeah, Daddy East. I didn't know that. The way it – oh, gosh, no. Yes, and feel free to cut all of this out if you want. Maybe I'll keep it. So when Stern Electronics, the old one, formed, they acquired the assets of Chicago Coin, but it's not a continuation of the Chicago Coin business. It was a whole new business. Okay. Then when Stern Electronics went out of business, after some time, when Daddy East got into pinball, they bought those same assets. So they bought the Chicago coin assets that became the Stern electronics assets. And that became data East, but the actual company of data East became the division under Sega. And that became the standalone Stern pinball. That is all the same company just rebranded and under different ownership models. Well, Sega, but say, yeah, daddy East became Sega. Sega bought data East pinball division and made it their pinball division. Didn't they only also own like Capcom or there was something there. No, no, no. They did not. But back in the 70s, Sega formed a separate pinball division to build and sell games specific to the Japanese market. Did they ever see production? Yeah, yeah. They did them for about a decade. Really? Yeah, but they weren't for export, so you don't see them around much. There's a museum in Tokyo, I believe in Tokyo, that has a number of those games. they're really interesting like the pop bumpers the instead of the part the pop part getting pulled down it's it pushes up it was very there are a lot of innovation in the in the so even air ball started way back then so anyway so it pushes the there's a whole so these assets get traded around and stuff but that's why that stern book that's under perpetual kickstarter it goes back to data east because and that whole when batman came out and stern was celebrating its anniversary. They date that back to the start of Data East. Not Stern Electronics. It's a separate tax ID and everything. It's just different.

    Love it, Craig. Let's get to EGP. A little Eclectic Gamers podcast. Why? It's not even on TPN. You had a big guest on. It wasn't Bobby Pinball from Deep Root. No, no. It was Jeff. Let's see if I can botch this. Bach-le-var. I wonder if Jeff is nutty with honey drizzled on top. Is that what the baklava? I ate it. You ate it, so you should know, right? Honey's nuts, right? It usually has sort of nuts as almost a paste inside of phyllo dough, and then usually honey-based sweet syrup is poured over it. Yeah, hold the nut paste for me. Not big nut paste. Well, then it would be phyllo dough, butter, and honey glaze. Phyllo dough. Yeah, that really thin dough. It's, I don't know if you ever, well, it's not a dough. What am I saying? You obviously have never worked with it. You can buy it in the freezer section. It's really, really, really thin dough. Paper dough. And that's what's, so it's like paper thin, and you layer it. So you can make a lot of Middle Eastern dishes rely on it, desserts and such. Poor Jeff Baclar. Every time we bring him up, I bring up Baclar. but he was on the eclectic gamers podcast that was a treat for you you guys are going to have to listen to this episode it was damn good but kind of recap some of the things you guys discussed sure we went through i reached out to jeff bacalar uh months ago because he wrote an article in december about his top 10 pinball machines and he posted it over with giant bomb so i remember through EGP on Twitter. I shared that article out. A lot of exposure. And I mentioned him and I added him and I said, hey, you know, if you ever want to come on and talk pinball because he noted he was on Giant Beast Cast which isn't a podcast I listen to but I'm familiar with it. It's a video game podcast. And I said, well, if you want to come on a podcast and talk about pinball, Tony and I are more than happy to have you on. And he said, once we get past the busy early video game season, let's do that. And we got past that and then I got busy. I didn't follow up until about a month ago, reached out, picked a date. We went through that article where he picked his top 10 games. And then we did the Stern Showdown bracket. Oh, nice. Enough time to play a game. So I was like, okay, well, let's go and do that, have some fun with that. And so he's been a pinball player for a long time, but he is not as steeped into it as most of the people who are listening to this show are. So that was interesting. It was a good lesson to me because there are things I was saying that he wasn't understanding. And at one point in there, you could hear him go, I feel like you guys are just trying to school me here. And I was like, oh, no. I just have no idea what you know and don't know. So you just got to tell me. I will simplify everything I need to to make it clear. But I'll try. But it was fun. You had a good showing, Bucky. But he actually knows a lot. He knows a lot about – he knows more about games than that statement implies. So he's familiar with designers, very modern-oriented now in terms of – he owns games. apparently he's been streaming on Twitch. Yeah, he was Lone Day Willy Wonka from Jersey Jack Kimball. So I was like, oh, okay, well, he must be somewhat, he's like, I could put in a word for you. Jeez. I was like, yeah, well, I know Ken Cromwell too, so don't act like you're all that. So yeah, it was fun. I got to tell you, you had a great, listeners, you have to listen to this episode if you haven't already, you probably already have, but Dennis shined on this episode. This was a cornerstone effort on Dennis's part. I thought that he and Jeff had a working relationship and knew one another. Oh, no, we don't. That's how good you shine, dude. That was a nice job.     Yes, I'm sure they're clamoring. When their editor-at-large, because he's also an editor-at-large at CNET, is already into pinball, they probably don't need an additional person. Every day they go without having Dennis Creasel as an employee is the day they failed. It just is what it is. Hashtag fact. Only reporting the facts here. I know you try to. But anyway, Tony and I had a lot of fun with it because we actually used to have, you know, we don't do, we don't really do interviews very much. But we used to have a lot of guest hosts on. And we really have not because of our work situation last year. And then this year, it's just sort of this, you know, same old, same old. And I was like, I really wanted to try and at least have a few guests again because it changes up the dynamic. You know, a show like this, we don't do rotating co-hosts. But with EGP, we do try and bring in a third guest host from time to time, sometimes even more than three on certain special occasions. It's always like whenever you guys have co-hosts, they are like a special guest. They're pretty big and good ones. I recall over the last couple of years of listening and following EGP, they've been really good. His top ten list was questionable to me. A lot of people have mentioned that they disagree or had issues with part of the list. And, hey, that's the interesting thing about lists. And that's why I had him on is I thought there are definitely going to be a lot of people that take issue with this list. So I think it will be fun to talk about. I thought overall the list was pretty good actually. It wouldn't be my top ten, but I can definitely see most of these being on a top ten list. I can. I wouldn't argue a lot of them. Now, what I would argue, though, is old Bucky, Jay Bok, is what I call him.

He is well above that level. But his familiarity, and he admits it himself, was mostly with just having played a lot historically and not really diving into the hobby until much more recently. Like he owns games, but most of those games are pretty new. He got into it the way a lot of us get into it, but he's not generating content around it. So what he ends up learning is at that pace of ownership, whereas what you've learned is at the pace of your involvement as a content creator. This is different. This is different pacing. Good points. Go listen to that. Follow EGP if you haven't already. Another podcast that tickled my ear this week was Jeff Teolis' The Pinball Profile. He had on George Gomez, creative officer over at Stern Pinball. George Gomez, as everybody knows, is a legend. They talked about design. They talked about manufacturing right now and lack thereof and when we might expect something to change. He also, I love that George Gomez, my homie Gomi, even referred to the trolling that occurred on that Zoom meeting and the follow-up with that picture in Dwight Sullivan's basement. He said, you know, he has kids, and he had a Ninja Turtles poster. And then later he was like, maybe we did that on purpose. Maybe we don't. Who knows? What do you make of it? There are people at Stern that have a rep for doing some trolling. Yeah, I think it's all in fun. When do we see Stern Pinball start back up? You're going to have to listen to find out, but spoiler alert, he doesn't say. No. Yeah, I haven't heard this one yet. People already contact me saying it's a really good episode of Pinball Profile, though. So it is in the queue. I'm hoping to listen to it when we are done here. Another highlighted pinball podcast this week was Off the Record Pinball Podcast. Our buddy Dakota Mike wanted to do his own, and he was very crafty because he put some work in here, Dennis. He had a roundtable discussion with some of the prominent women in pinball, especially pinball media. He had Kate Martin, Miss Pin, Stephanie, sorry, Steph, Gaida. Gaida, yeah. Gaida, I got it right, yeah. And Emoto Harney. So he had those ladies on to discuss so much about women in pinball in the 21st century and how it differed from decades ago, the progress we are making, the setbacks that still do occur from time to time. What I liked about this discussion, number one, is well done, well organized, well executed, but it was very thoughtful on each of the co-hosts' perspectives. They didn't all just agree on everything. and they well everyone's everyone's an individual so i that's what i love though that's what i love that so he he got he picked a good diverse audience i haven't heard this yet i i know it drops yesterday sunday so i i've got it to play but i haven't been able to play it yet last listen to podcast of the day before we released it yeah interesting points they even talked about women designers in the future uh coders they touched on some of the serious topics then yeah Yeah, and they were all very respectful, but they were still funny. Overall, good. Admittedly, a little cringeworthy when talking about some of the TPN launch stuff. I was like, oh, no, I don't want to go back there. Well, obviously, those of us who lived that are going to be a little sensitive. But we don't censor when we put things out on TPN. So I'm glad they're willing to have the discussion. I think it's a healthy thing to talk about this sort of stuff. So I never regret having the conversation. And having that off-the-record pinball podcast from day one, accepting everyone. We were talking about it, Dennis, before you, and you said the only barrier really to the off-the-record is money, objectively, because you have to have enough money for a microphone and stuff like that. But we can even help out with some of that. So it's nice that there is a platform for people to discuss important issues like this. I hope that Dakota Mike continues with this roundtable discussion with some of the pertinent issues that we do face in a growing industry. The only thing that I will point out is that in the opening, it made me cringe a little bit because Mike was like, I reached out to them encouraging them to have a female co-host on their show, and they haven't done that yet, but maybe in the future. I was like, oh, no, but – On TPS? Yes, on the pinball show. Yeah, I was like, we don't do co-hosts. Okay, that's probably some confusion because TWIP podcast had rotating hosts, and this show doesn't, so it's not really structured that way. But we are always looking for new podcasts to put out. Oh, yeah. So in terms of if someone wants to reach out that wants to do a show concept, my personal suggestion is always try it as an off-the-record and see if you like it and see what the response is. But we're always willing to – we'll take care of the hosting. We'll get you a little intro bumper. And other than that, it's your show. You guys do – anyone who – ask anyone who's done any of them. We try and be very hands-off in terms of it's your creative content. We do not interfere. But hands-on and supportive if you need us with editing or just techniques or – You'll get suggestions on how to improve your audio, and we think something might not – may or may not work. It's up to you if you want to use it or not. But I think overall, in terms of what we've done since being launched on TPN, since apparently they've touched on that topic, I think it's demonstrated that it's pretty – forgive me for kind of seeming like I'm plugging my other show, but it's fairly eclectic. We have quite a few different voices. It is extremely eclectic. And I'm glad it ended up working out that way because that was the goal. But at the time when you're just a group of five people and you're trying to keep it secret and you're trying to put it all together, it's like you don't know if it's going to work and you're tunnel visioning on certain things. And I've talked all about the launch already before, so I don't want to – I don't see any need to rehash it. But I'm glad that it can still serve as a good discussion point. Absolutely. We do have a very diverse – now that we're looking, we're three months in now, Dennis, and we have went through a lot of stuff as a group, the Pinball Network. We set out and we have done a phenomenal job in only three months. We have numerous streamers. We have numerous podcasts. We have a platform that is available for anybody to jump on and to be heard in pinball. We have UNI's continued work with the pinball show and streaming efforts. We have YouTube videos and we continue to grow week by week. Now, when you said we were eclectic as a group, I couldn't agree with you more. I am just unbelievably proud of what we've been able to do in the last three months. And I can only imagine where we're going to be in six months, in 12 months, and so on. Loser Kid Pinball Podcast. And that's scary. the other addition i have is that a couple issues cropped up with my lebowski i warned you on your stream about what the common complaints are with the lebowski and i said issues car and you said this game has been playing so great and i was like general feedback is that those things go down pretty quickly so i was confident that the science the engineering the prowess that went into it would show its true colors soon enough why dutch why now these are minor issues i believe but i'm just so salty about it because i wanted to stream it tonight on the flipping out pinball streaming network and now you have to stream the new code of alice cooper's nightmare castle maybe we will do that but no the big lebowski i got a little air message that has come up that is common but it's it's computer-based b-rock based i have to hook up a keyboard in order to Get the air down. She said, it's kind of a name the actor, name the character, from a quote that you hear from a movie. There are three quotes. You get more points if less quotes are needed. When identified, you have to name the movie slash TV show and the pinball machine, quote, related to that movie or TV show. Okay, so the goal is actually to name the movie or show. Name the actor and character. Actor or the show? What are we doing? What do you mean actor, character? I have to know the name of the character and the name of the actor? You're acting like I created this. We're going to go through this together. I have no clue. He says when identified, you have to name the movie, TV show as well, and the pinball machine that's related to that movie or TV show. It sounds like a... Well, that doesn't sound like I have to name the actor then. I don't know why it says name the actor and character. But he said that all are based around what he covers on the pinball correspondence segments, that is, haggis, pinball, and spooky pinball, but in reference to horror themes, spooky, or, quote, Scottish themes, which is derived from haggis. Okay. So that makes somewhat sense to me. Now, I'm worried already that Dr. John is a different generation than I, so probably not a lot of Billy Madison references. Oh, he's too old to come up with a game. I'm not an ageist, but I'm saying I might not do well at this if he's doing Casablanca and stuff. Sorry, Dr. John, you're not that old. So I don't know what we're going to call this segment. He covers what he calls shit, the spooky haggis industry talk. Just for a change for the shit update this week, I'm going to include a shit quiz for you. Now, the rules are simple. It's points-based, and Zach will be keeping score because he's the most honest of the two of you. So what we're going to do is I'm going to name three movie or TV quotes associated with an actor. If you get the actor from the first quote, you get three points. Second quote, you get two points. who quotes you get one. And then you must name the actor for one point and the character he played in the aforementioned quoted movie. That's one point each. And finally, a pinball machine associated with that actor or character. Now, the proviso is every theme is either a spooky horror movie theme or a Scottish actor theme. Whether he plays a Scotsman or comes originally from Scotland is the key. Now, these actors may have appeared in multiple films and may have multiple pinball machines associated with them, but I want either the spooky or the Scottish theme. Thank you very much. Let's start with a nice, easy example, shall we? All right, so it sounds like the main thing is to name the actor, and then there's also a point for figuring out what character the actor was from the quotes but that one's not the rushed one where you need to go the one two three and then the pinball machine is also somehow associated with the given actor for these first two i'll tell you whether it's scottish or spooky which won't be a great help because it's pretty obvious anyway number one quote number one for three points oh is that all the things i get for a night of hot sex I'm dead sexy and you are crap Okay Dennis so we heard The first quote there I think now We should write down on our Piece of paper if we have an answer A guess I'm going To submit a guess as well for the Actor and the character And then I guess let's Listen to the second quote If you haven't identified that For two points First things first where's your shitter I've got a turtle's head poking out. And if you need one more, I ate a baby. Oh, I baby. The other white meat. Baby, it's what's for dinner. I'll start out, and then we'll alternate between items here. My guess as to the actor is Canadian-born Michael Myers. And then my character guess is Fat Bastard. and the pinball game is stern pinballs austin powers baby yeah yeah similar though i don't know if he just goes by mike or michael i wrote down mike myers and fat bastard and austin powers yeah that's the pinball machine okay so let's see if we're right so the answer for the actor of course is Mike Myers playing the Scottish character Fat Bastard and the pinball machine of course Austin Powers. So that was your easy introduction for a Scottish theme. All right Dennis so we both received if I'm playing this game correctly five points apiece? Yes. Okay. But you're the only trustworthy one so it's up to you to do the math. I love that. Let's go on to item number two. Now for a spooky theme, which are a bit trickier. Let's start with this one. The monster was the best friend I ever had. The monster's the best friend I ever had.

So I've submitted my answer on the second quote. We'll play the third one for you. And for one point, it's alive. So you submitted on the third one for a possible three points. I still wasn't super sure exactly which film he's pulling from. So I ended up going with Gene Wilder as Dr. Frankenstein and Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as the pinball machine. Okay. I have a similar response. My answers were Gene Wilder, Dr. Frankenstein, not Stein.

    I didn't do too bad, right? Yeah. It's great. Was it novel? It was. Well, I mean, I've seen other people do the angle down at the flippers. Papa is fond of that, for example. I think a lot of people like that style, but a lot of people also like the overhead, which is why I think usually you see when people do the at the flipper angle, they do both. Yep. I like the overhead, too. It just doesn't fill the screen, so I feel like we get cheated. and if it's an accessory camera it's like are you really committing i went full commitment we filled up that whole screen haven't you ever heard about the proper use of white space what do you mean you know like in art and layout and stuff you want you want to have some white space it's not all that not everything needs content oh it's an a huh i don't know film agrees with you tell that to george lucas george lucas is this camera a and camera b oh my god don't bring him up it's a citation film he filmed those prequels like they were soap they were good damn it no they were not ah off the record we get that round table discussion we talked about check that out and a oh and i gotta say this it's not part of tpn makes no sense to even mention it here but it's a proud papa moment papa poca not papa poca uh my son remember i gave him those challenges listeners dennis you remember he's already gotten two of the challenges he gc'd my circusville terror this kid has played pinball maybe 30 minutes of his whole life and he got on the leaderboard on whirlwind so 200 in the bank out of the possible 13 games and he requested that he streamed this week this past week can you put he's fallen right into the trap of addiction pinball addiction so he streamed for the first time and the little guy has anxiety issues and neurotic but he's got some of his dad's blood in him of course both with anxiety and with showmanship and performance and got out there and really did well on stranger things he even requested that i not join him for a game i was like you little punk yeah yeah so he's streaming under dp many his first initial, middle initial, and last name, DPMini. You'll have to check him out. I told him I'd give him a shout-out, and he was like, don't, Dad. So I thought I would. He'll never know. He doesn't listen to the show. He doesn't. Nobody does.
