And welcome to episode number 59, the one-year anniversary slash birthday of Special Win Lit's Pinball Podcast. As always, with me today is Bill Webb. What's going on, Bill? Just crazy to think about. A year has gone by since we started this. It's nuts. I'm trying to figure out if it feels like it's longer than a year or shorter than a year, but there's definitely some time there. Absolutely. You think back, and it was quick, and then you think back to the work, and it was like, wow, that was a long year. But it was a good year. It's been a fun journey, and to my left and to Bill's right is one of the guys that helped us kick this podcast off, and that is from Stern Pinball, lead programmer Dwight Sullivan. Dwight, welcome back to the show. Hello, Pinball Land. Yes. I'm glad to be here. It's a party here. A year later. It doesn't feel like a year. It doesn't? It does not. It feels like it was just a few months ago. Let me, in all honesty, because when we first reached out to you, you were episode number three, So you helped us kind of get on the map with an interview with our podcast. Three? Yeah, well, we had interviewers. Number one was getting to know us. Number two was our first covering the news. Number three was our first interview. And then you were actually gracious enough to allow us to do that. When you left that day, what were you thinking that Ken and Bill were doing with this podcast? I was thinking that, you know, I love you guys and you're having fun, but I don't know if you're going to go anywhere. I agree. You know, pinball's hard, and podcasting is hard, right? It is. It's much harder than it looks. It's harder than it looks, but it's all in good fun, and I don't know. We're still sticking around. So I'll start to show off with saying thanks, Dwight, because without getting that first interview with you, I honestly don't know if we get to 59 episodes and get that first year under our belts. I think you and I were surprised when we hit 20, in all honesty. We're like, how far is this going to go? We'll see. Right, right. And, you know, we got you guys. You guys have proved over the last year that you didn't need me, that you were, you know, a force to be reckoned with. And you've come a long way. You've evolved. And the show is awesome today. Any other guests that stand out to you, Bill, when we've been doing this show for 59 episodes? The whole thing has just been like a ride. You know, just a crazy, crazy ride. Starting off with Dwight, you know, doing that episode, the first one. And then kind of going in order with Steve Ritchie, you know, talking about past pinball stuff, T2, Getaway. It was cool having Steve on because Steve's not one that really does a lot of podcasts. In fact, I had only, I think, made it, I might have heard one other interview from him, an audio interview before we had him on. And I'm sure he's done others. Oh, yeah. But it was an honor and a privilege to have him on the show and then to be able to do that at Stern. That was fun. um john borg awesome guy great guy brian eddie i mean honestly just you know i'm gonna cut it short otherwise i'm gonna read the whole list of names but it's kind of like a uh meeting all your heroes doing this yeah you know i mean that's been you know the crazy part oh we're gonna meet this guy and then you you know you shake hands and of course you're nervous and 15 minutes later it's like oh they're just human beings cool brian eddie was great because brian at the time we kind of had a man he was kind of disappeared i mean we knew that he was hired at stern I had never met or spoken to Brian, so that was interesting. He had brought his girlfriend, Jenny, here. That was a fun time. That was one of my favorite episodes that you did. Oh, great. Because Brian and I used to be good friends back in the day, and we kind of grew apart. So you guys talked about things I didn't know, so that was great. I think you mentioned you guys were roommates at some point. We were. We were roommates. I love it. I would love to have been a fly on the wall in that bachelor pad, right? The Todd Tuckey interview was fun. Todd. Which Todd's doing better now, so good to see you out of the hospital. He just did the remote Skype for Pentastic, so good to see you on his feet. Just want to send a little love that way. Sorry to detract. No, you're not. That's what we're talking about. Great having Jack Danger. He had come in the studio, and ironically, that was the only show that you ever missed, and it was because you had a last-minute emergency on your way to record that podcast with Jack. Yeah, yeah. I only missed it because I was at the emergency room with my daughter. So, but yeah, I mean, honestly, it's just this whole ride and meeting all these people has just been so crazy, you know, to think about, you know, the last year, all the names that we've met and, you know, shaking hands with, especially our fellow podcaster friends and just the whole gamut of everybody that we've met. And it's just all inspiring, you know, to think about when I turn my head and think back. Just recently having Chuck Ernst on the show. Yes. What a personality that guy is. and we've got so much feedback on that interview with Chuck. His stock's rising in the podcast world. We're not going to be the only guys reaching out to him, so Chuck's on his way. I mean, Chuck has stories upon stories. Dwight, you probably know better than we do with Chuck Ernst. I've heard lots of Chuck's stories. They're all awesome. They're all funny. He tells them well. Yeah. Yeah, he's a good dude. Great guy. 17 years making Mortal Kombat. Yeah. Like, after 10 years, you're like, the designers come in and they go, can we change that orange? You know, like, you've got to get out of there. You have to stop making Mortal Kombat at some point. We talked a little bit about Mortal Kombat on that interview. And now we can't do everything ourselves, right? So one of our favorite guys in pinball is lead sound engineer at Stern, Jerry Thompson. Yes. And Jerry has really helped us out with a lot of voiceover work. We have a lot of stuff in the can with Jerry that we're yet to release. And actually, it's suiting now because it is our birthday. It's our one-year birthday versus our 50-episode birthday. So, I mean, that's actually pretty cool.

    Well, he's at the bar now because now when we hit 100 episodes, I'm expecting another song from him. Actually, he's got a little surprise for you later in the show that I'm going to play, Bill. Okay. All right. Uh-oh. You know what? So Jerry and I have discussed Mark Stoke, and we would love to reach out to him at some point for some future game and have him work on voiceover. It would be incredible. And I know he's such a passionate pinball guy, and he's very professional. And I've had conversations with him, and to just kind of hear his theory on dissecting a sound package and how he would implement some things differently fascinates me, because it's now things that he's pointed out that I can't not notice. And I like that, because it expands your horizon. So it'd be exciting, Dwight, if you guys get on the same page and get him in there with you. Collaborate on something. It would be really fun. Love to have that come to fruition. You know, it's been his dream, dude. I haven't talked to him in a while, but, you know, definitely got to reach out to Mark. Yeah. Thinking about you, Mark. Now, at one point, we had two brothers, Artisan Brewing. They were the makers, and they are the makers of Pinball Pale Ale, so they started sponsoring the show. And it was an interesting sponsorship because we talked about their product, and they supplied us with beer. And there's nothing better than podcasting with a little bit of beer for Ken Cromwell. And we're talking cases upon cases of beer. Right. Now, I realized about it. That's just tonight. No, well, I realized that we had to switch sponsors at some point because 25, 30 episodes in to Pinball Pale Ale and recording. Well, I want everybody at home to imagine this. So literally, Ken had all these, you know, every time we got a certain amount of cases, you know, they'd stack up in the living room or his front entryway. So literally, I think like 30 or 40 episodes in, dude, you had like a castle made out of two brothers right in the living room. It was a big castle. Oh, man, it was crazy. So just think of a castle stacked up with two brothers pinball beer. You know, and it was unfortunate because we couldn't get the beer out to those that weren't close to us. So, like, I mean, we're not beer distributors, so we can't sell it. You certainly can't ship it. So unless we had somebody in studio that we can hand stuff off at or if we could go on location and pass it out, we started accumulating a stockpile of beer, which you wouldn't think is a bad thing normally, but it can become a problem. Yeah. Well, and it's inventory, and then it's the fact that as much as I like Pinball Pale Ale, I'm not motivated to drink it for a little while. Well, we enjoy the casual beverage, but we're not alcoholics either. So, I mean, that's also part of the problem. Alcoholism didn't really hit until we went to Pinball Expo in 2018, in which case we had the infamous Steve Beattie warm bucket of chicken incident. Followed up by TPF. You know, I ate some of that chicken. I never got sick. So you did have some of that chicken. Okay, and Dwight wasn't drinking. So it wasn't the alcohol that killed any sort of bacteria if Dwight didn't get sick. potentially, he wasn't sick from the chicken. It was sick from potentially having some alcohol that night. Absolutely. Too much, yeah. Wow. That myth has now been... So the bucket of chicken is a myth. Disproven. No, no, no. Being sick from the said bucket of chicken has been disproven. Right. How much chicken did you have? Do you remember? I had one wing. Oh, okay. Well, maybe... Is that white meat or dark meat? I actually remember that now because you and I were talking. Yeah. And you were eating the wing and sitting on the bed. Yeah, I remember that now. That was a good time. All right. So you survived. I survived. But you have been feeling a little bit under the weather lately. Well, that's from allergies. Maybe it's a delayed onset of the chicken. I don't think so. No? That was like over a year. I'm sure. An extreme offset. Okay. One of our favorite guys that we recently had the opportunity to meet, and that was at Texas Pinball Festival, is Dennis Creasel. What a nice guy. And so knowledgeable. I mean, honestly, he's got his Ph.D. in pinball, or Ph.D. I mean, just crazy amount of knowledge. Yeah, as much as I love you guys, and I think you've come a long way and you're awesome, Dennis is probably my favorite podcaster Yeah, no, that's absolutely fair Well, we know why we didn't win last year then Or weren't nominated at the Twivies Because Dwight gave his vote to Dennis That was the one that would have put us over the top That would have been it Some other people we met at Texas Pinball Festival Again, in the podcasting world Miss Pin and Dr. Pin Awesome people And I was so happy to finally get a chance Because we had exchanged a lot of messages And to be able to sit down with those guys And have some drinks and just talk pinball was super fun. And then Dr. Penn, I'd had a couple drinks when I normally don't drink, and Dr. Penn gave me some great advice on how to drink water and not get a hangover. Is that what you do? Hopefully it works.     Well, I don't know. I mean, I drank the water. I didn't get a hangover. I was good, but I'd only had a couple shots. That was the fireball shots with Jeff Teolis, right? It was. That was the fireball shots with Jeff Teolas. I don't drink and somehow... I was jealous. Somehow Jeff... Walk us through that, Dwight. How does that happen? Because full disclosure here, we've known Dwight for a while, and the few times that I've asked him to partake in alcohol, he's simply politely refused, and I respect it. And then we go to Texas Pinball Festival, and he's wearing the lampshade on his head doing some shots with Jeff Teolas. With fireball shots. So how does that happen, Dwight? Well, Jeff, you know, you've heard Jeff. His voice is silky and smooth, and he's a great guy, and I'm just kind of in love with him. So he said, here, have a shot. And I couldn't say no. There is no, but seriously, there is a bromance going on with me and him, or at least there was. Okay. I haven't heard from him in a long time. I'm kind of hurt. It's a long-distance relationship. It is. But, you know, he said, here, come have a shot. And I just, you know, I just said, okay. One led to two, two led to four. Right. Well, no, I think it was a total of maybe three. I lost track, but maybe three, maybe four. Where did you wake up and did you have any missing time? I woke up. I was never that drunk. Just making sure. We were wondering if we were going to be driving to the airport. You might be passed out outside of TPF Convention Center or something. But you were being good. You can hold your liquor.

    Sure. You hold three shots well. How about that? I didn't vomit or anything. I was good. You didn't go stream another company's pinball machine or anything? Oh, I did. No, I didn't. I did. So Jeff, that's the second thing he told me to do. So Jeff gave me these shots, and then we went and played this really cool game called Stahlball. It's a type of game. We played actually on Star Trek or Star Wars. I was drunk. I don't know. And so then Stahlball is a lot of fun. It's a line of people get in play, and you try to put the ball in a hole, and then you get out and get back in line again. It's like hot potatoes. Have you ever played Stahlball? No. No, I've never done that. It's a really cool format for pinball, and everyone puts in a dollar, so there's like 10, 15, 20 people playing, and it's just one long line of people. And you play, and the objective is to put the ball somewhere where it's held without draining, and then while the ball is held, you stop playing and you go get the back of the line, and the next guy has to play. Okay. And if you – so it's whoever – if you drain or if you commit some other kind of foul, you're out, and the last person standing is the guy who wins all the money. Okay. That sounds actually pretty fun. Sounds like a good time. Yeah. It is a good time. So he taught me that. We played that. And then the next thing I know, I'm streaming Oktoberfest with Martin C. From head to head? Martin from head to head. Right, right.

We also met Martin for the first time at TPF. And it was briefly, I think, towards after the Twippies. I think we caught him outside. Yeah, outside. Yeah, super nice guy. Canada. I won't deny that. But I'm not sure that's what's supposed to make me think of in regards to pinball. Diner? Oktoberfest? An upcoming Spice Girls theme? Or how about episode 10, Special Winlicious? Wow. So compelling. What? Is he clapping? I think so. I sure wish I named episode after a pack of bubble gum. Did you all chew on a lot of that content that day or something? How about episode 40, Eat, Sleep, Bet, Pinball? This title is awesome because nothing dredges up the dark underbelly of pinball's origin story quite like the links to gambling, except maybe links to the mob. So you could have taken it further, but instead you just chose to write it right up to that tacky edge, and I respect you for that. Nice job, fellas. Thank you. Or finally, how about episode 51? Are you a pinball pirate, flipper, or scallywag? That's you, Bill. You know who never played pinball? Pirates. You know who never knew about skill shots? Scallywags. This title is so confusing and awful, I think it would only become popular if you were both to come out and say you would never run the title again. Who knows? It might even spur some additional downloads on that secondhand market. But seriously, Bill and Ken, you both have been an incredible asset in this interesting, confounding, compelling, and entertaining hobby we all share. But since we're on the topic of judging, they seem more excited about this than the anniversaries with their wives. And ironically, the podcast and the time they spend on it probably keeps them from any sort of actual female interaction, including their wives. Special and Lit does a lot of interviews.     So I like to learn two things. I like to learn news that I might not know, and I like it when the two of you or Jason Fowler and somebody or Dennis and Zach dive deep into one topic that's kind of interesting. So I've seen you guys do it a handful of times and those are some of my favorite episodes of yours. And of course, Dennis and those guys do it all the time too and that's what I like about podcasters is when I'm learning the news, something I don't know, something that comes from your correspondence guys or from Jeff through Zach.     Those are the things I like. Sure. It's nice, too, because I think before we started podcasting, I don't know that you were a podcast listener in general, right? I knew nothing about podcasts. I learned the whole world because of you guys. And now I listen to five or six podcasts every week, and it's your fault. I like that we're all working together for the most part. I mean, it's easy to kind of follow up a story with another show or respectfully.

    work away from a topic that somebody else is working hard on, and I do like to be able to do that. I see our show getting better over the next 12 months, and that is with continuing to add the correspondence and really have a fine-tuned machine that's able to really report on what's going on up to the minute every time that we're able to release an episode. Well, in everything that we've done, we really have kind of taken it in steps and make sure that we didn't do something too crazy, too fast, and watch the whole thing implode. Yeah. The whole thing has just been incredible. I mean, from listenership, you know, watching that go, to the feedback from people. You know, I mean, one of the greatest stories that, you know, one of the most impactful stories recently was Rob talking about, you know, listening to our episodes while he was going to the hospital to see his daughter because she was in the NICU. And, you know, that really cut home, especially with my wife being pregnant. So, you know, it really has an impact when you get the feedback from people saying how your stories have affected their life. It's always good, and we receive a lot of feedback and congratulatory emails in regards to the one-year show. Unfortunately, we can't read them all today, but what I'd like to do is maybe touch on those on Episode 60, which will be Season 2 of Special When Lit, which will launch a week from today. How funny is that? Season 2. Season 2 of Special When Lit. Dun, dun, dun. Yeah. who do we add? Who gets killed off? This is the finale. So something crazy has to happen. Oh, s***, I'm going to die. We'll never see a code update for Ghostbusters if he dies. Our climatic moment was when Todd went to the hospital, but he pulled through. That's my idea of our climatic moment for the podcast. Well, I agree. At the beginning of this year, right, I said lots of great things are coming from Stern, and that's still happening. Like, you know, you've seen a couple games, and you're going to see a couple more that are pretty awesome. I can't wait to see how they close out the year because we're halfway through, and I imagine we'll see another two, maybe three games, and it's exciting. I can't wait to see it. Bill, it's been a pleasure doing this for the last year with you, man, for a couple of guys. Quite a ride, man. Out of Chicagoland area that were pinball enthusiasts that decided they'd throw their hat in the podcast ring with putting up three episodes on July 1st, 2018. I think we're doing okay for ourselves.
